00:00I'd like to state that no braineese or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:03and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:09Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:11To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain for chance to win Brain Jutsu Black Brain Belt.
00:19This is Brain Jutsu.
00:27Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as Samurai sword,
00:33he is Brain Master. He is the Sensei.
00:37Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jutsu.
00:42Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:46My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:53A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:02Training stimulates your brain, and it makes you ready for what challenges lie ahead.
01:07I think I've done quite well in the training, but I feel really nervous.
01:10I'm feeling very confident today, and I'm going to get that flex out.
01:13Now, my braineese must put their training into practice.
01:16By testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:20Level 1.
01:21No, no, Walt!
01:24Take a look at all these chocolates.
01:26Mmm, yummy.
01:27But how many white rabbits are there?
01:31If you've got six, then congratulations.
01:34You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:37This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:44The seven braineese, who use their occipital lobes the best, will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where
01:50their training will continue.
01:52The one who fails will be left outside.
01:55Oh!
01:56Feel the burn.
01:58Enter the dojo!
02:01Our braineese must answer four questions by counting the different coloured shapes and numbers on the board in front of
02:07them.
02:07Get them right, and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock a
02:12piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:16But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese, one of either David, Anorag, Tia, Wally, Maddie, James, Catherine
02:26or Hezron, will be left outside and eliminated.
02:30The atmosphere in the noodle bar is more pressured than a Japanese rice cooker, as the four questions are revealed.
02:36How many squares are there?
02:45How many orange shapes with numbers are there?
02:56How many black shapes with blue numbers are there?
03:08How many green numbers are there?
03:13The answer our brainies are looking for is 7, 9, 3, 5
03:22Tia is first up, but has she got the chord right?
03:26Well, he follows close behind, with a few more brainies hot on his tail
03:32Tia was first off her stool, but now she's back on it, as she's got the chord wrong
03:36In fact, it looks like all her brainies have got the chord wrong
03:40The key to this task is to stay calm and really focus on getting the answers right
03:44Don't rush, and don't be put off by the others around you
03:52Don't forget the chord our brainies are looking for is 7, 9, 3, 5
03:56As there are 7 squares, 9 orange shapes with numbers in
04:003 black shapes with blue numbers in, and 5 green numbers
04:07Maddy is the first to finish, while all the other brainies are right back where they started
04:14A few nervous faces there, in fact, even winner Maddy is looking worried
04:18No need, Maddy, you used your occipital lobes training to the max
04:24Anorag claims second place, with Catherine, Tia, Wally and David following suit
04:29Leaving Hezron and James to battle it out for the last place in the dojo
04:35Hezron has his hands on his head
04:36He mustn't fret, but must focus on the chord
04:42James is smiling, he thinks he's finally got the chord right
04:46But no, he's wrong again, and Hezron has literally jumped off his stool
04:51And is running to the brain, as he cracked it at last
04:55That's it, Hezron's in and James is out
04:58And the relief on Hezron's face is as obvious as a sumo hiding behind a chopstick
05:04So, as 7 enter the dojo for a chance to survive 6 more gruelling levels of brain training
05:09For James, the dream of the black brain belt has ended before it even started
05:14I suppose I was a bit panicked and I just rushed through everything
05:18So, I'm not sure who will win the black belt, but they're all good
05:22So, with 6 levels to go, only Maddie, Anarag, Catherine, Tia, Wally, David and Hezron have entered the dojo
05:30And achieved the first of their coloured brain belts
05:34I tried the task a couple of times, but in the end, when I calmed down, I got it right
05:40I'm going to win the black belt
05:42But I think it's going to be pretty tough, because Catherine's a really hard contender
05:48I'm quite glad that I got first, because that makes me think, oh, I probably will get through the next
05:51round too
05:58In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard
06:03Level 2, Orange Belt
06:07We do things every day, without even thinking about it
06:10Like throwing a ball
06:11But next time you're with your mates, try throwing it with the arm you wouldn't normally use
06:17Yeah, a lot more difficult, isn't it?
06:19If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving
06:24The frontal lobes
06:25And that's what Level 2 is all about
06:29Taking something you normally do without thinking, and doing it differently
06:33Work it!
06:35To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainees are going to need some training
06:41Room of Mental Nourishment
06:43The Room of Mental Nourishment is where our young hopefuls will train their brains to help them progress to the
06:49next levels of the dojo
06:50The more serious our brainees take the training, the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead
06:56And in Level 2, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way
07:01Brain training
07:02Take turns to call out the action on your cards
07:04Everyone must do it only when you say, Sensei says, before the action
07:11Sensei says, touch your right ear
07:16Look, Cappy
07:17This exercise makes our brainees work their frontal lobes, as they have to really think about something they would normally
07:24do without thinking at all
07:25Sensei says, stand up
07:27Ha ha ha!
07:29That's Tia and Catherine out
07:31Touch nose with left hand
07:33And Maddy too, boys one, girls nil, training tip time
07:39Don't rush
07:40Pause for two seconds to think before you react
07:44Sensei says, stand up
07:46Sensei says, spin round clockwise
07:51Sensei says, move palms up
07:54If you want to work your frontal lobes at home, why not play this game with your mates at break
07:58time
07:59It's great fun, and it will help improve your all-round focus
08:02Touch your right ear
08:05Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot
08:07The boys were probably just a little bit better than us
08:11But we're still gonna win
08:12Part of our evil plan though
08:14Yeah, just pretending to be bad so they go easy on us then we smish them
08:20Goals are genuinely rubbish, they only think about magazines, and dresses in fact.
08:26You're rude!
08:30Boys only think about winning.
08:32There's a real boys versus girls battle going on with this lot. The girls outshone the boys before they entered
08:38the dojo, but the boys have excelled in the training.
08:42Who will be getting their orange brain belts and who will really be getting smished and making the walk of
08:46eternal regret?
08:48There's only one way to find out, it's time for our brainies to really put their train into the test.
08:54Guardian of the dojo and Task Adjudicator the Sheehan will now demonstrate the level 2 challenge.
09:00Patsy-feely boxes!
09:04Inside seven boxes is hidden item, five of which match with item on shopping list.
09:10Brainies must take in turns to reach into each box and guess what inside. Not by looking, but by feeling.
09:17If they think that item matches with one on list, they must try to remember number of box it is
09:24in.
09:25Once brainies have felt all seven boxes, then have 15 seconds to identify which box they are in.
09:34Brainies with least number of correct answer will be eliminated from dojo.
09:41My brainy tip for this task is to focus on just the items on the list and mentally tick them
09:48off as they fill each box.
09:50Work those frontal lobes!
09:53Our brainy's are waiting nervously for the gong.
09:56But if you want to know what they don't, here's what's on their shopping list today.
10:00In blue box number two, we have rice.
10:04Purple box number four hides a block of cheese.
10:08In green box three, we have cotton wool.
10:12The jelly cubes are in orange box five.
10:15And in yellow box six, the chopsticks.
10:18But there are also two distractions.
10:20In pink box number one, there are mealworms and in red box seven, it's pencils.
10:24And if all that wasn't enough to make our brainy's think differently, you will also have noticed we've jumbled up
10:30the box numbers.
10:33Time to get touchy-feely.
10:35Three, two, one, it's go on the gong.
10:39Brainy's have just five seconds to identify each item before moving on to the next box.
10:44Not being able to see the items, the challenge for our brainy's is to use their training to think in
10:49a new way.
10:49Their hands must become their eyes, as they focus solely on their sense of touch.
10:54And Catherine is clearly not a fan of touching worms.
10:59It's only cheese in box four, Maddie. How are you going to cope with the worms?
11:06Unlike Maddie, David is nonplussed by the cheese, but it's her turn on the worms and she's not happy.
11:14Anurag is though, he's finding box three's cotton wool hilarious.
11:22Will Wally and David confuse the pencils in box seven with box six's chopsticks?
11:29Hezron is hesitating with touching the worms at all.
11:32How can he be expected to remember box number one if he hasn't felt what's in it?
11:39Hesitating, Hezron is at it again with the cotton wool and Maddie's freaking out again, this time with the jelly
11:45cubes in box five.
11:48As the challenge progresses, Tia and Catherine have a few nasty shocks.
11:52And hesitating, Hezron actually touches something.
11:58That's all seven boxes done and our brainy's have 15 seconds to work out their answers.
12:03Here's that list again.
12:15And here are the box numbers.
12:20But as the final gong goes, who's benefited from their training and allowed their brains to think in a new
12:25way?
12:25Results time.
12:28Maddie, three out of five.
12:31Anurag, five out of five.
12:34Catherine, four out of five.
12:37Tia, five out of five.
12:40Maximum Maddie looking nervous.
12:42Her three means she's bottomed so far.
12:45Wally, three out of five.
12:48David, three out of five.
12:50So it could be a three-way tie between David, Wally and Maddie.
12:54It all hangs on Hesitating, Hezron.
13:00One out of five.
13:02I guess that guessing just wasn't good enough.
13:04So Hesitating, Hezron is out and he must now leave the dojo to make the...
13:10Walk of eternal regret.
13:13I think Anurag's gonna win the black belt because he's smart.
13:17I didn't use the train there when it came to the final challenge.
13:20I am feeling sad because I didn't get to go for the black belt.
13:25So with five levels to go, only Maddie, Anurag, Catherine, Tia, Wally and David have gained their orange brain belts.
13:35I'm relieved to get past the second task.
13:39In the training, Anurag said that all the girls thought about was magazines and stuff.
13:44But so far the only people that have been out were boys.
13:46So I think we're gonna be left with three girls in the sort of semi-final.
13:52Brainy two.
13:56Brainy, not so brainy.
13:59Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
14:03Mount Everest, what a beauty.
14:05Now these two geezers, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, was the first to climb it.
14:11In the ultimate test of mind over matter, not only did they conquer a blooming great mountain,
14:15but they also had to battle against snow, ice and temperatures that would freeze your thermals off.
14:20Mount-tastic.
14:21Now these look like brave and extreme conditions of another kind, the Sahara marathon runners.
14:26They think nothing of legging it four and a half thousand miles across the Sahara desert,
14:30in temperatures well over a hundred degrees.
14:32Whew! And it takes these jokers a hundred days just to reach the finish line.
14:36If they ever get there, I'm tired just thinking about it.
14:39Brainy, Hillary and Tenzing. Not so brainy, Sahara runners.
14:46Brain Jitsu.
14:47Brain Jitsu.
14:49Pressure in Brain Jitsu Dojo rising.
14:52Now just six young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Shihan.
14:57Maddy, who won first challenge but went from maximum to minimum in last round.
15:02Wally.
15:03In the training the girls didn't do so well and they just wanted to get back at us.
15:08David. Been quiet so far. Could be Dark Horse in Dojo.
15:12Katherine.
15:13So far the only people that have been out were boys.
15:15Tia. She get top marks in last challenge. Can she build on success in next level?
15:20And Anarag.
15:21Even the girls were kind of rubbish in training. Kind of pulled it off at the end.
15:26Challenge is about to get even tougher. Only two brainy will make through to final test.
15:30Table of Supreme Forecasts.
15:33Where?
15:33Must move ball with power of mind.
15:36For chance to win.
15:37Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
15:39Here's the time for...
15:40Level three.
15:41Green Belt.
15:43Now, we all like to chat.
15:45But did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown
15:51so incredibly powerful?
15:53And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:58Now, if all that's doing, you're heading.
16:00Allow me to explain.
16:03Imagine you're on a movie set where each crew member is focusing on their own particular job.
16:09But the director, he has to be aware of what everyone's doing.
16:13It's the same with the brain.
16:16There's the left half, which deals with the details.
16:18And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
16:22This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:30Hey! Pump it up!
16:32Room of Mental Nourishment.
16:35It's our second visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment.
16:38Brainies have a choice as to whether they take part or not.
16:41But any extra training they do will help them with the challenge to come.
16:46For level three, it's communication training.
16:49Brain training. Get into pairs.
16:51Direct a blindfolded trainee to stack the blocks using only one hand.
16:56So it's blindfolds on for the girls who will be using the left side of their brain to listen to
17:01the instructions.
17:02While the boys use the right side of the brain to communicate clearly to their partner how to build the
17:07tallest tower they can.
17:09Now take the small one. Use the small one.
17:11Then you start.
17:13And you've got a big look. Turn it so it's like vertical.
17:16David is explaining simply and calmly to Minimum Maddy how to build her tower.
17:21Left, left, down, down, stop, left, right, right, right, stop, down, this there.
17:29And put it down, down, down, slowly, slowly.
17:32But suddenly Maddy's freaking out.
17:34She must stay calm and trust David's instructions to guide her to build a building block venanza.
17:40That's just about bouncing.
17:42Shall we just not do any more?
17:44Maddy can't handle the pressure. Time for a training tip.
17:48Use short, clear instructions and imagine yourself hearing them.
17:52Higher up there.
17:54There.
17:58Down, down, down.
17:59Down, down, down.
18:04Well, I suppose it was only a matter of time.
18:06Although Catherine and Wally have managed to keep their tower block towering.
18:11I don't think we did well because the boys gave us good instructions.
18:13I think we did well because we're really good builders.
18:16If we didn't give good instructions, they wouldn't know where to stack it.
18:20So, apart from Maddy freaking, everybody did well in the training.
18:23But there's still a big boy-girl divide in the group.
18:26The girls are sticking together all the way and the boys aren't giving an inch.
18:30But who'll be making the long, lonely walk of eternal regret?
18:35Time to find out as they compete for their green brain belts.
18:41Balloon pop number drop.
18:45This level tests how well our brainies can communicate.
18:48So our six need to be in teams of two.
18:50The chopsticks will decide the pairs.
18:52So there's David and Anorag, Maddy and Tia, who look delighted to be together, and Wally and Catherine.
18:59It will be interesting to see how a mixed team works in this very girl-boy divided group.
19:05Quickly as possible, teams must burst six balloons containing number, which go together to form some.
19:12Pairs need to decide who is Guider, who is Popper.
19:16With Popper unable to see under helmet, they will be relying on Guider to help them burst balloon.
19:23When all balloon popped, brainies stop clock by shouting,
19:27Brinjitzu!
19:29Quicker they burst balloon, more time have to pick up number and make some.
19:35Once brainies are happy with answer, hit gong!
19:39The first two teams to work out the correct answer will get green belts and advance to the next level,
19:44while one brainie from the losing team will be eliminated.
19:49The key to success here is for the Guider to use the right side of their brain
19:53to follow their teammates' progress and give them clear instructions.
19:58For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain
20:03to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
20:09First to put their communication training to the test are David and Anorag.
20:13Jump!
20:14Everyone did pretty well in the training, so we're starting with a fairly even playing field.
20:19That's it. Now move forward.
20:22Stop. Now jump.
20:24Anorag's instructions are more precise than bonsai topiary.
20:27Shuffle a bit left.
20:28And David is doing more shuffling than a Japanese pack of cards.
20:32But it's paying off.
20:33Jump!
20:36The boys are struggling for the first time here.
20:39That's a jump.
20:42Brain jutsu.
20:43But they're finished, and it's an excellent time of 56 seconds.
20:48Now the girls.
20:50Maddie freaked out a bit in the training.
20:52Will she stay calm in this challenge?
20:54Jump.
20:55Right.
20:57Pop.
20:59Tia is using the right side of her brain well.
21:01And far from freaking, Maddie is doing more popping than Japanese popcorn.
21:06Pop.
21:08Back.
21:10Pop.
21:11The girls are struggling slightly at the exact same place as the boys before them.
21:16Pop.
21:18Pop.
21:20Brain jutsu.
21:21Finally they're finished, and they're only two seconds behind the boys with 58 seconds in total.
21:26Now Wally and Catherine.
21:29Forward.
21:30A little bit more.
21:32Stop. Pop.
21:34Back a bit. Back a bit.
21:37Pop.
21:38This group does have a real boys versus girls rivalry, and Wally and Catherine certainly seem to be having problems
21:44communicating efficiently with each other.
21:46All right. Diagonally to your right.
21:49They finally pop the first balloon, and then it's smooth sailing from then on.
21:54Stop. Pop.
21:55Brain jutsu.
21:56With a final time of 1 minute 26, they are quite a lot behind the others, and it's Anna Rag
22:01and David who look for their numbers first.
22:07Here's whatever brainies are looking for. Can you work out the answer in your head?
22:16All three teams are very speedy with collecting the numbers, but all are taking their time with the answer.
22:226 plus 12 equals 18.
22:2418 divided by 9 equals 2.
22:26Maddy and Tia are the last to finish.
22:28As both of the teams got their answer right, the girls have to go face to face in the...
22:33Stare off.
22:39With just one green belt up for grabs, both brainies must use all their powers of focus to fight the
22:45urge to blink.
22:46The first to falter will be eliminated.
22:50It's all over in the blink of an eye. Maddy's in and Tia's out.
22:54Tia's smiling, but Maddy looks gutted to see her friend go.
22:58Are we gonna see tears for Tia as she makes the...
23:01Walk of eternal regret.
23:06The team game went alright, but when it came to the sum, we tried a couple of different orders, but
23:12they didn't add up.
23:13We were last, but we did get it right.
23:16So with four levels left, it's green brain belts for Maddy, Anna Rag, Catherine, Wally and David.
23:23I feel quite happy because I got through by the skin of my teeth and the stare off, but then
23:28again I feel really bad because I had to face my best friend and then she went and I feel
23:32really bad for her.
23:33The training did help quite a lot because we learned to work in teams and, like, guide each other.
23:42Brain T2.
23:46Level 4.
23:47Blue Vault.
23:49This fourth level requires our brain ease to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala, the area
23:56that responds to threat.
24:02Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky? Maybe that time you were about to take a really crucial
24:08penalty.
24:08Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
24:13Now, stress can make you lose focus.
24:16Fact.
24:17Which is why my brain ease must train to keep their emotions under control.
24:23Room of Mental Nourishment.
24:28We're back in the Room of Mental Nourishment and it's time for our five green belt holders to focus on
24:33overcoming their fear.
24:36Pass the disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said a different word relating to
24:43the last word someone says.
24:44After one minute, the Brittany holding the drink has to drink it.
24:48I think Wally means brainy. The thought of that cod liver oil is distracting him already.
24:54Err, battery.
24:56Energy.
24:58Light.
25:01Darkness.
25:03David's hesitation means he's scared. Come on, fight that amygdala.
25:07Cockrum.
25:09Mammal.
25:10Now anorag's at it.
25:12The gong means Catherine has to drink. Those hesitating boys stitched her up.
25:21Training tip time.
25:24Concentrate. Try to blank out the time appear of the drink to avoid panicking.
25:28I'm not playing anymore.
25:30Yeah, that's fair. She has to drink at once already and that's just disgusting.
25:33It's your call, Catherine.
25:35Fear.
25:37Err, fear.
25:39Snake.
25:40Oh dear, Wally hasn't taken the tip on board at all. If you're scared, it means you're focused only on
25:46the drink, so you can't think of a word. Concentrate on the word and ignore the drink and you'll succeed.
25:53Err.
25:55Err, school.
25:57Err, school.
25:59Peasants.
26:00But in spite of Wally's numerous pauses, it's anorag who has to drink and he simply laughs in the face
26:06of fear.
26:08Nice.
26:13At first I couldn't think of a word but after I saw someone drink it, I was more determined and
26:19concentrated more about the words instead of trying to think about what it was.
26:23I actually knew what I was going to say next beforehand. I was just playing for time so I don't
26:28have to drink it.
26:28Sure you did.
26:30So Catherine set out the second round. Will it hinder her next performance?
26:35David did badly at first but he really took the tip on board and came up trumps.
26:39Will he take his train into the next challenge?
26:42Wally says he was pausing on purpose. The girls don't believe him.
26:46It's time for our five to put their brain train into the test and combat their fear to compete for
26:51their blue brain belts.
26:54Creepy Crawly Word Grab.
26:57This level will test of mind over matter for brainies and will push them to really overcome their fear.
27:04Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
27:08Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each.
27:14They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
27:21To do well my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore the creepy crawlies.
27:28The quicker they combat their fear the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters.
27:39Underneath the cockroaches are an extra five golden letters.
27:43If our brainies manage to use one in their word they'll double their score.
27:57Maddy and Catherine are really freaking out.
28:02Minimum Maddy must really control her fear.
28:05She's been in the bottom twice in a row.
28:07She really doesn't want to make it three.
28:10Catherine must focus only on the letters.
28:13Maybe she shouldn't have sat out the second round of the training.
28:17The boys are all staying fairly quiet.
28:19David didn't do well at the start of the training but the tip obviously helped him as he looks very
28:24focused here.
28:25What's Catherine going to do with all those hoes?
28:32The gong means that their minute is up and now our brainies have another minute to make the longest word
28:37they can out of the letters they have collected.
28:40Anorag has bagged a golden letter but can he use it?
28:44See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
28:55Home.
28:56Home.
28:57I've never heard of it.
28:58But will the she-han allow it?
29:00Nope.
29:01No points for Maddy.
29:02Mo.
29:03It's a blinder.
29:04A golden letter means ten points for Anorag.
29:07Zoo.
29:08She's finally found the use of those hoes.
29:11Eleven points for Catherine even after the screaming.
29:14What?
29:15It's certainly tickled the she-han but will she allow it?
29:18No.
29:19Zero the hero for Wally.
29:22Ross.
29:25David has aced the final fear exam.
29:28Fourteen points.
29:29He's got the blue along with Anorag and Catherine.
29:32Which means that Maddy is in the bottom two again.
29:35So she and Wally have got one chance to prove the power of their minds in the...
29:41High Break Chopstick Challenge!
29:45It's tough but fair.
29:46Our braine's must engage their occipital lobes, the seeing part of their brain and quickly work out how many chopsticks
29:52they see.
29:53They have just five seconds to write down their answers.
29:56If they lose focus and panic under the pressure, it'll all be over.
29:59Time to reveal our braine's answers.
30:01Fifty-three.
30:04Thirty-four.
30:06The actual number is...
30:11So Wally's guess of thirty-four was furthest from the correct number.
30:14He looks gutted.
30:16Maddy's in and he's out.
30:17And he must now leave the dojo for good.
30:21Walk of eternal regret.
30:24I'm feeling kind of annoyed because I wanted to get into the final three but then again I didn't do
30:30too badly so it's not all that bad.
30:32So with only three levels to go, Maddy, Anarag, Catherine and David proudly wear their blue brain belts.
30:39The training didn't really help me because the drink wasn't moving.
30:43It wasn't really that bad though.
30:45Creepy crawlies because they don't really bite you so just brush it off and then that's done.
30:52Brain-ty-two.
30:56Brainy.
30:56Not so brainy.
30:59Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
31:03Picture the scene. It's 1666 and this young chap, Isaac Newton, is catching 40 winks in his orchard.
31:10When Wallop and Apple hits him right on the nut.
31:13But Isaac doesn't just yelp and rub the large bump on his curly head.
31:17He only goes and discovers the force that keeps our feet on the ground and the earth in orbit around
31:21the sun.
31:22Namely, gravity.
31:23Apple-tastic.
31:24Now take a look at this lot.
31:27Every year they try and fight against gravity as they hurl themselves off Bognapir.
31:31The rules are simple. Fly the furthest and win a cash prize.
31:34Come on, son, you can do it.
31:36Back to the old drawing board, I think.
31:38Brainy, Isaac Newton.
31:40Not so brainy. Bird brain, bird men of Bognapir.
31:45Brain-jitsu.
31:49Tension in brain-jitsu dojo mounting has now just four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Shihan.
31:56Catherine, in spite of fear, has pulled through two fear-filled challenges.
32:00Can determination see her through to end?
32:03Minimum Maddy, who almost lost in three challenge in a row.
32:06Every one I'm in a tiebreaker and then they go and I feel really bad for them.
32:11David, dark horse of dojo, who's steadily making way towards finish line.
32:16And confident anorak.
32:17Even though I didn't do that boundless task, I still feel confident that I can gain the black belt.
32:23Only two brainy will make final test.
32:26Table of supreme focus.
32:28Where must move ball with power of mind.
32:31Brain-jitsu black brain belt is within grasp.
32:34It's time for...
32:38Now, if you're learning how to ride a half-pipe on a BMX bike,
32:42then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing wonders for your old grey matter.
32:49Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
32:56You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head,
33:00which keeps your brain cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
33:06So, in level five, my brainees are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
33:11Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
33:15And this is what our brainees are going to train for now.
33:20Room of Mental Nourishment.
33:24It's our brainees' fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment.
33:27And for this brain training exercise, they're going to be really working their brains by learning something new.
33:34Brain training. Flip and catch as many drinks, coasters as you can.
33:39OK.
33:40This exercise combines both mental and physical skills.
33:44Our brainees are stretching the thinking part of their brain by concentrating on their new skill.
33:48And they're also flexing the doing part of their brain by performing the physical action.
33:55Minimum Maddie will be back to maximum Maddie if she carries on like that.
33:58Good wrist flick coaster action there.
34:02It's just practice, you know, I can really do it.
34:05Practice makes perfect.
34:07Ow!
34:09David and Catherine not doing quite so well.
34:15Training tip time, I think.
34:18Approach this positively.
34:20Laugh out loud for 30 seconds.
34:22What?
34:25You know that's the right tip.
34:27Oh, that's scary.
34:29Anorag really going to town with the tip, but has it helped him with the task?
34:33It's quite good. You're still being the laughing sound.
34:40Success at last.
34:42A positive attitude really does help when you're learning a new skill.
34:46Stay confident and avoid getting flustered, and you're much more likely to succeed.
34:50Based on that task, I think either Mia or Catherine will be eliminated in the next round,
34:55because I was terrible and she wasn't that good.
34:58I think it's probably true that I'll be out, or you,
35:02because I was terrible before the laughter, and I was terrible after the laughter.
35:07So...
35:08Is that right?
35:09I know about you two, but I'm quite confident about this task.
35:12I'm quite good at learning new skills.
35:14Confident Anorag seems very sure he'll get the red.
35:17Can his positivity see him through?
35:20And in the battle of boys versus girls, will it be David and Catherine going head-to-head for the
35:24last red belt?
35:26Only time will tell, as our four now put their new skills train into the test,
35:30and compete for their red brain belts.
35:34Quick, quick, don't drip!
35:37Brainy must use training to keep clear head and steady hand to carry water across obstacle course,
35:44spilling as little as possible.
35:46There is trampoline to glide over, seesaw to deal with, and stairs to climb.
35:54But, blue belt holders also racing against clock, and the faster their time, the more points they can add to
36:00their total.
36:02Brainy with slowest time will be eliminated!
36:07The tip for my brainy's in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
36:15Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
36:20As the she-hand fills our blue belt holders' balls, the dojo fills with tension.
36:24Our brainy's are so close to the black belt they can almost feel it on their foreheads.
36:29But who'll use their training to boost their mental confidence as they learn a new skill?
36:36It's red water for Minimum Maddie, as she starts them off.
36:41Maddie did well in the training, and I have to say, this is textbook stuff.
36:45She's fast, controlled, and so far, she's only had one spill.
36:55She's really using her training to control her body with her mind.
36:59Even the seesaw looks like a steady walk in the park.
37:05It's all over very quickly. That's got to be a record.
37:09And she knows she's done well. But let's see how well.
37:20Almost got biased. Yay!
37:22She's aced it. She's chuffed to be back on maximum form.
37:26Now, for confident Anorag.
37:30Anorag also did well in the training room.
37:32He's taken it much slower than maximum Maddie.
37:38Ooh, nasty spill there.
37:42Anorag's natural confidence means he's mentally and physically mastered the seesaw without hesitation.
37:48That's a shame for him. He mustn't let the spill knock his confidence.
37:54And he didn't. Superb control on the stairs there, and he's finished.
37:58But how's he fared?
38:0620 very frothy units for confident Anorag.
38:09But I wonder if his speed has let him down.
38:12Catherine and David both admitted they were weak in the training.
38:16Will they manage to pull it together now?
38:17Catherine's up first.
38:22It's a bad start.
38:23Catherine needs to focus her mind to control her body.
38:27She isn't holding the ball level. This doesn't board well.
38:33That was a fast and steady walk there. She should believe in herself.
38:41Quite a few spills for her there, and her face says it all.
38:44She's not a happy brainy. But has she done better than she thought?
38:5217 units. She doesn't know how well the others have done.
38:55But she'll have to hope she was faster. Now David.
39:01David was first to admit he wasn't so hot in the training.
39:04He's taken this slow and steady to keep his control.
39:10Two nasty spills in a row there.
39:12And now he's practically taking pigeon steps to make amends.
39:19But it's spillage central for David at the end.
39:23Let's see how he did.
39:2920 units. But those pigeon steps could well have cost him the red.
39:34Time for the results.
39:36Maximum Maddy had the fastest time of 37 seconds.
39:39So she gets three points to add to her 21 units.
39:42A total of 24 points.
39:44Confident Anorag with one minute seven seconds.
39:47He has the third fastest time and one point to add to his 20 units.
39:5121 in total.
39:53Catherine's time was an excellent 52 seconds.
39:56She gets two points to add to her 17 units.
39:59To make a grand total of 19.
40:02It all hangs on David.
40:04With the slowest time he gets no points to add to his 20 units.
40:07But he's pipped Catherine to the post.
40:09By one point and she's out.
40:13Walk of eternal regret.
40:17I'm disappointed because I thought that if I got this far I'd have a chance of winning the black belt.
40:22I think either Anorag or Maddy will get the black belt because they seem more focused in most of the
40:28tasks.
40:29So with only two levels left, Maddy, Anorag and David stand proud in red.
40:35I think I'm going to be at the table of supreme focus but opposite me I think it's going to
40:39be Maddy.
40:40Now it's against boys, I really want that black belt and I'm not going to let anything stop me.
40:453!
40:47RAIN TITTER!
40:50Level six are...
40:52PRAWN BALT!
40:54It's this level which will decide which two of my remaining brainies will go on to battle it out for
41:02the black belt.
41:04Now, imagine you're a gymnast.
41:07Not only do you have your routine to remember, but you've got to keep in time to the music.
41:12And you've got a load of people watching you.
41:16It's remembering stuff like this under pressure that Level six is all about.
41:21It centres around three areas of the brain.
41:24The seeing part, the occipital lobes.
41:27The memory part, the temporal lobes.
41:30And the movement part, the cerebellum.
41:34Room of mental nourishment.
41:38With only three brainies remaining, this penultimate brain training challenge is all about memory.
41:46Brain training. Memorise the sequence of colours.
41:53So, our brainies are testing the occipital lobes, the seeing part of their brain.
41:58And their temporal lobes, the memory bank.
42:01They're very quiet, aren't they?
42:02The room of mental nourishment has never been so silent.
42:14Finally, Minimum Maddie breaks the silence and it's time to test.
42:17Orange, silver, red, green, pink, green, purple.
42:25Hmm, purple, red, blue.
42:27No, it's pink. You got that one. You said that one was, um, red.
42:32You're a harsh woman, Maddie. That was pretty good for a first try.
42:36OK, um, I'll go next.
42:38Just to warn you guys, I'm going to do really badly.
42:41Orange, silver, red, green, pink.
42:47Green, purple, yellow, pink, blue.
42:53Did I get it right? Yeah.
42:55Did I?
42:56A little slow but pretty impressive stuff. David's turn.
42:59Yellow, silver, red.
43:06Erm, erm...
43:08You're obviously not very good at this.
43:11I thought I was really bad.
43:12I'm not.
43:14It's high time we had a training tip, don't you think, David?
43:17Create a song linking the colours together.
43:21OK, so we'll have to think of a tune.
43:22Erm, so, silver, erm, silver, green, red, green, yellow.
43:30It's easy to remember if you use a well-known tune, Maddie.
43:33I can't see that one in the charts any time soon.
43:35Green, red, green, yellow.
43:37Pink, pink, blue.
43:38Memory tests like this are a great way of training your brain.
43:41Why not try to create a song out your mate's mobile phone number and see if it helps you to
43:46remember it?
43:47The question is, has the song worked for our red belt holders?
43:51Green, red, green, yellow.
43:53Do you want to look?
43:53Double, pink, blue, orange, purple.
44:00Silver, green, red, green, yellow.
44:03Pink, pink, blue, orange, purple.
44:07Yay!
44:08Silver, green, pink, green, yellow.
44:11No, silver, green, red, green, yellow.
44:15Pink, pink, blue, orange, purple.
44:23Yay!
44:25I reckon I'm the best here because...
44:27Because you got it all wrong.
44:28Yeah, I got it all right.
44:30But the rules were, if you get one wrong, then you get it all wrong.
44:33But I got it first, so you had more chance to look at...
44:35I think Maddie was better than Anurag because she remembered them both times.
44:40Unlike me, I just couldn't remember them.
44:42That's what you think, but let's see what happens in the task.
44:46So, who was better, Maddie or Anurag?
44:49David really struggled.
44:50Will it cost him his place on the table of Supreme Focus?
44:54There's only one way to find out.
44:59Super Memory Dizzy Dash.
45:02A Brainy is a spin around on Dizzy Wheel, total of ten times, while using all power of focus to
45:09memorize five images in front of them.
45:12Then, must race against clock to cross balancing beam and collect exact opposite of those image from ten hanging above
45:21them.
45:21If Brainy remember seeing sun, then must pick moon.
45:26When happy they have arranged images in correct order, must hit gong to make clock stop.
45:34My tip for the Brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective and use their training to link the
45:41five images together.
45:44So, our final three brave the wheel to compete for their brown brain belt and for a chance to triumph
45:50over the table of Supreme Focus.
45:52Time to spin.
45:55Will their memory training help our brainy's ignore the effects of the wheel and memorize the images?
46:00The order they are looking for is at the bottom of the screen.
46:10Max and Maddie looking very wobbly at the start.
46:12She did well in the training, but can she bring it in here?
46:17Maddie's obviously finding this challenge more confusing than a cappuccino at Japanese tea ceremony.
46:22She chose go, and now she's putting it back again.
46:26Don't forget, our Brainy's must fight their dizziness and pick out the opposite images of the ones they saw on
46:31the wheel.
46:32So, here are the images that Maddie saw, and here are their opposites.
46:40For everyone she gets wrong, there's a five second penalty.
46:50Indecision with the last two there.
46:55But she's finally gonged.
46:57Looks like the dizziness got to her though.
46:59Now Anorag.
47:07Anorag thought he did very well in the training, but the spinning has definitely made him unsteady.
47:13Can he use what he's learnt to fight this distraction?
47:17Don't forget that this challenge decides which two Brainy's will go through to the final round.
47:21The table of supreme focus.
47:27A big pause from Anorag there. Can he make up time with the order?
47:40Very fast with the order there, but is it enough to get the brown brain belt?
47:45David's turn.
47:47David's struggled in the training.
47:49Can he master his grey matter now that it really matters?
47:55David's doing more to-ing and fro-ing than two Samurais on the seesaw.
47:59The dizziness has clearly distracted him.
48:02And that pause was bigger than a sweaty Sumo's dry cleaning bill.
48:12He's finished, but how has he fared?
48:14Time for the results.
48:17Maddy.
48:18One minute forty-four and four penalties.
48:21That's two minutes four in total.
48:24Anorag.
48:25One thirty-eight with three penalties.
48:27So it's one fifty-three in total.
48:29He's in.
48:30Maddy's place in the dojo hangs on David's score.
48:34One minute fifty-six seconds with two penalties.
48:37Which means there's only two seconds between him and Maddy.
48:40But maximum Maddy is in and David is out.
48:47Walk of eternal regret.
48:51The training, if I had done it better, I think I would have been more confident going into the next
48:56challenge.
48:57I think Anorag will win because you did very well in the training and the actual challenge itself.
49:02So with only one level to go, it leaves just maximum Maddy and confident Anorag to wear the brown brain
49:08belts in preparation for the final.
49:10I'm really relieved that I got the brown belt because I was two seconds in it.
49:15Now that I've got the brown belt, the black belt really feels in my grasp.
49:21Brain Jitsu.
49:25Eight young hopeful arrive at Brain Training Dojo to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:31As challenges got tougher, brainies get fewer.
49:35Some lost control, others too slow.
49:39But one by one, they've been eliminated until just two remain.
49:44Maximum Maddy, nearly out for time.
49:47She had more lives than Siamese cut.
49:49And confident Anorag, strong contender in every level and whose self-assurance has never faltered.
49:56But who will use the brain training to the max to win final challenge?
50:02Level seven.
50:04Black Belt.
50:06So, this is it.
50:08Between my two remaining brainies and the black belt stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
50:14A mental duel that is head to head in every sense.
50:19The battlefield?
50:21A table.
50:22But not just any table.
50:23For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
50:27Where our two brainies will attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind.
50:35By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure.
50:41But now, they must learn to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm.
50:47To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
50:53Room of Mental Nourishment.
50:57So, it all comes down to two.
50:59Confident Anorag and Maximum Maddy.
51:02In this final room of mental nourishment, our two brown brain belt holders must bring together all the training they've
51:09received in the dojo to achieve the ultimate focus.
51:13Brain training.
51:14Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
51:17Don't let the sounds put you off.
51:22So, our two finalists have to block out the noises and focus only on finding their inner calm and concentration.
51:29Maddy seems to be concentrating hard on eating.
51:32Anorag can't stop scoffing too.
51:34And is that a smile playing on his lips?
51:37He doesn't seem to be in the zone at all.
51:39Training tip time.
51:41Okay, here's a tip. Not that I need it.
51:44Tense and then release individual parts of your body from head to toe.
51:54Hopefully I'm going to win because I really want that black belt.
51:57Black belt. Black belt.
51:58I really feel confident now that I can win.
52:02She's never going to win. Never.
52:04I'm quite calm. She isn't. She always gets worried about things like cockroaches.
52:09You act all sort of, oh, I'm not bothered about that kind of thing.
52:13But you are really.
52:14Sure. Sure.
52:17Confident Anorag won the last task and has never been in the bottom two.
52:21Can he sustain this impressive record?
52:24Maddy's brain jitsu experience has had more ups and downs than a roller coaster.
52:28Will her dojo journey end in a downward spiral?
52:31Or will she go out on a high?
52:36Table of supreme focus.
52:41Rules are simple.
52:43Each brainy must push ball to the opponent's end of table using only power of mind.
52:49Sensors in brainy's headbands measure brain waves.
52:52This is converted into electrical signal which moves ball.
52:56More focused mind, stronger signal and faster ball will travel.
53:02See how brainies are doing on this readout.
53:05Two lines represent each player's brain waves.
53:08Lower the line, more concentrated their mind.
53:21To make sure this is the test of all tests, our brainy's must win the best of three rounds.
53:26So, this is the big one.
53:28If they are to succeed, our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of absolute
53:34focus.
53:35This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:38This is the moment they've been training for.
53:43The she-hand starts them off and the mind race is on.
53:47Confident anorag is first to move the ball.
53:49It's not flying towards Maddy's end.
53:52In fact, it's moving very slowly.
53:54You can see on the computer readout that both players' lines are almost identical.
54:00Both brainies look incredibly focused.
54:09Bata tempura!
54:11Maximum Maddy has stopped the ball in its tracks and is moving it back towards anorag's end.
54:16And it's flying down.
54:21You can see Maddy's green line is way below anorag's now.
54:37So, it's round one to Maximum Maddy.
54:40She maxed out her focus in that round to come from behind when it looked like it was all over.
54:47Confident anorag is smiling, but he should watch out because the look on Maddy's face is raw determination.
54:52Time for round two.
55:02Leaping Salmon Shishimi.
55:04Maddy's off again and that ball is moving faster than a bullet train.
55:08Her green line is flat and low and anorag's black line says it all.
55:14Anorag's black line has dipped. Can he get it back?
55:17Nope, it's all over.
55:19Maximum Maddy has done it and she looks genuinely shocked.
55:23She truly used her training to the max to prove herself a true winner of the black brain belt of
55:29brain jitsu.
55:32When I started I thought I'd come out fast and to be here right now is just really good.
55:38Definitely will wear my ranger's blue black belt with pride.
55:40Glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:44He fought valiantly but now anorag must leave the dojo.
55:49Oh my god.
55:52Walk of eternal regret.
55:56I've been literally gutted. I don't know, how did I lose?
56:00I was so calm and I think in the end she, I just think she's got some psychic power.
56:06She moved the ball towards me.
56:08So, anorag lost focus when it mattered the most and it cost him the black.
56:13But it's a triumph for Maximum Maddy.
56:15After riding high in the first challenge and then plummeting almost to the bottom three times in a row,
56:21she regained her brain power.
56:23She built on that success to take it all the way to the max to earn back her nickname
56:27and prove herself worthy to wear the brain jitsu black brain belt.
56:34Our journey has come to an end.
56:37Another brainy has proven themselves worthy to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:42But while brain jitsu might represent the most extreme form of brain training,
56:47its philosophy can be shared by all.
56:51Each and every one of you has it in your power to grow your mind.
56:56All it takes is dedication and practice.
