00:00brainies or insects were harmed in the making of this program and that none of the training you're
00:04about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision. Eight brainies, one challenge.
00:11To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:18This is Brain Jitsu. Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan with mind as sharp as samurai sword, he is brain
00:33master.
00:33He is the sensei. Konnichiwa and welcome to Brain Jitsu. Mental training specially designed to boost
00:44brain power and focus. My trainees or brainies have been following a basic program of training
00:51in the comfort of their own home. A brain boosting routine of exercise, sleep and enough fruit and
00:58veg to stock a greengrocer's. After training it's I can focus more on the thing because I was very
01:06nervous. The training has really helped me with my confidence I guess. I want to win just a bit more
01:12than everyone else. Now my brainies must put their training into practice by testing a part of
01:18their brain we use every day. Level one. You're no fault! Take a look at my very cluttered garage. Now
01:27try to find the little rubber duck. Spotted, eh? Congratulations! You've just used your occipital
01:34lobes. This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each
01:41other. The seven brainies, who use their occipital lobes the best, will be allowed to enter my Brain
01:46Jitsu Dojo, where their training will continue. The one who fails, will be left outside. Ho! Feel the burn.
01:56Enter the Dojo!
02:00Brainies must first answer four questions by counting the different faces on the board in front of them.
02:05Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock
02:11a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo. But with only seven pieces of brain and eight
02:17brainies, one of either Zara, Ryan, Sarah, Peter, Dina, Jessie, Sherelle or Caitlin will be left outside and eliminated.
02:30The atmosphere in the noodle bar is more intense than a stare off with a one-eyed sumo as the
02:36four questions are revealed. How many blue faces are there? How many green smiley faces are there?
02:54How many black faces have two ears? How many smiley faces have freckles? The answer our
03:11brainies are looking for is two, one, two, five. The order in which they unlock their piece of
03:17brain will decide the order our brainies take part in the levels to come. The brainy who does not
03:22complete this challenge will be eliminated.
03:28Sarah is first to reach a piece of brain, with more brainies falling close behind. But have they got
03:33the code right? Sarah's got it wrong and has gone back to the bar. But Peter has cracked it and
03:41is the first to claim his place in the dojo. Ryan's hot on Peter's tail. That's two boys down,
03:50only Jessie left. Don't forget the code our brainies are looking for is two, one, two, five.
03:57As there are two blue faces, one green smiley face, two black faces with two ears and five
04:04smiley faces with freckles. Dina and Sarah are next to get it right. But Zara is left to wait
04:13it out in the noodle bar and hope one of Jessie, Caitlin or Shirelle is wrong. Zara's got a chance,
04:21but she's got it wrong too. Come on brainy, stay calm and focused and use your occipital lobes. Jessie and
04:28Katelyn crack the code, which leaves just Shirelle and Zara to battle it out for the last place in the
04:33dojo.
04:35They've both got an answer at the same time, but it's Shirelle who's got there first.
04:40Duck Goyosa! She's wrong!
04:44Zara sees her opportunity and she grabs it with both hands. It's the right code, so Zara's in and Shirelle
04:51is out.
04:56So, as Seven entered the dojo for a chance to survive six more gruelling levels of brain training,
05:02for Shirelle, the dream of the black belt has ended before it began.
05:06If I could do anything different, I'd probably look at the question again and read it over again and again
05:14and again.
05:15The person I think would win is Peter because he can work things out quicker in his mind.
05:20So, with six levels to go, only Peter, Ryan, Dina, Sarah, Jessie, Katelyn and Zara have entered the dojo
05:28and achieved the first of their coloured brain belts.
05:30I think the person who's going to win the black belt will probably be Sarah because she's always confident in
05:37what she does.
05:38Well, I still feel nervous, but now that I'm through from the first round, it's still good.
05:43I'm really determined and I really want to win.
05:50In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:55Level two.
05:57Orange belt.
05:59We do things every day without even thinking about it, like using the remote control for the telly.
06:05But, try turning up the volume with the hand that you don't normally use.
06:10Go on, a lot more harder, isn't it?
06:12If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving.
06:17The frontal lobes.
06:19And that's what level two is all about.
06:22Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:27Work it!
06:28To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainies are going to need some training.
06:34Room of Mental Nourishment.
06:38The Room of Mental Nourishment is where our young hopefuls will train their brains to help them progress to the
06:43next levels of the dojo.
06:44The more serious our brainies take the training, they're better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:50And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
06:55Write the name of the brainy you think will win the black belt.
06:58Write backwards using the hand you don't normally write with.
07:02Backwards?
07:03So, our brainies are writing backwards with the wrong hand.
07:06This will help them to think in a new way by getting them to use their frontal lobes.
07:11Looks like Peter thinks Jessie is going to be the winner.
07:14Apparently, you only need the first and the last letters to be correct.
07:18All the others between it can be jumbled up and you still get the word right.
07:22I'm not sure I put my money on him winning Pete.
07:24I don't think he's really got the right idea.
07:27Training tip time.
07:31Picture the word in front of you before you write it.
07:33Think about each individual letter.
07:36Ryan's got it right.
07:37He thinks Retep, a.k.a. Peter, is the strongest contender.
07:42And he seems he's not the only one.
07:44Who are you lot writing down?
07:45I wrote Peter.
07:47I wrote Peter.
07:47Actually, yeah, Peter probably.
07:50That confident smile says it all, Pete.
07:52You think you're going to win too.
07:54Yeah.
07:56If you want to work your frontal lobes at home by writing backwards just like Sarah is right now,
08:01it'll help improve your all-round focus.
08:04It's one task we've had and I happened to come first in it.
08:10I mean, it could have been completely different.
08:12Ryan grasped the training straight away.
08:15Will it see him through to the next challenge?
08:17Jesse didn't seem to get it.
08:19Will this affect his performance?
08:21And will Peter's confidence be well-founded?
08:25There's only one way to find out.
08:27It's time for our brainies to put their training to the test
08:30and compete for the orange belt.
08:33Guardian of the Dojo and Task Adjudicator the Sheehan
08:36will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:39Spell backwards. Step forward.
08:42To stand chance of gaining orange belt,
08:45seven brainies must now think in reverse.
08:48Sheehan will show them picture.
08:50They have to say what is.
08:52That is cut.
08:53Then they spell word backwards.
08:56T-A-C.
08:59Get right and our brainies can step forward.
09:02Get wrong and they stay put.
09:04Brainies can choose length of word they want to spell backwards.
09:08Longer word.
09:09More time they get to answer.
09:11Three seconds for three letter word.
09:13Up to six seconds for six letters.
09:16More letters.
09:17More steps towards destination.
09:18There is slight advantage to going first in challenge.
09:22But order brainies take part is order they completed level one.
09:26Whoever not finished will be eliminated from the dojo.
09:30My brainy tip here is to imagine the whole word
09:34and then break it down into groups of letters.
09:37Hoo! Hoo!
09:38Hoo!
09:39Work those frontal lobes.
09:44Five letter words.
09:46The group has tipped him favourite to win.
09:48Can Peter get the five?
09:50Which?
09:52C-H-T-I-W.
09:56Batted tempura!
09:57Confident Peter is wrong.
09:58It's a shocking start to the level two challenge.
10:01Four.
10:03Cake.
10:04E-K-A-C.
10:07Four letters is a piece of cake for Ryan.
10:12Four.
10:15Goat.
10:16T-A-O-G.
10:19Dina sails through.
10:23Four.
10:26Lion.
10:27N-O-I-L.
10:29Four letters are roaring success for Sarah.
10:33Five.
10:35Jessie didn't seem to get the train in, will it matter?
10:38Igloo.
10:39O-O-L-G-I.
10:43Not this time, a nice cool five steps.
10:48Four.
10:50Four.
10:51K-R-O-F.
10:57Caitlin and Zara both get the safe four.
10:59And then it's back to Peter, who's in last place.
11:03Six letter word.
11:05Ooh, he's going for the big six to make up for the first mistake.
11:10Button.
11:11N-O-T-T-U-B.
11:15And it's paid off.
11:17Another one like that and he'd be back on top.
11:21Ryan, Dina and Sarah all do well.
11:24Now it's Jessie's turn.
11:26Five.
11:29Panda.
11:31A-D-A-N-P.
11:35He went for the five again but it didn't work this time.
11:38Jessie stays put and it's not long before he's way behind the others
11:42and it's back to confident Peter.
11:44Six letter word.
11:48Parrot.
11:50T-O-R-R-A-P.
11:55Unbelievable.
11:56After getting the first word wrong, he's risked the six twice
11:59and snagged that first orange brain belt.
12:03A whole run of correct answers means Ryan's second to reach the podium
12:06with Dina coming third and Sarah takes fourth place.
12:10That just leaves Jessie, Caitlin and Sarah to battle it out for the last two orange brain belts.
12:15Six.
12:16If Jessie gets the six, he's just one step away from his place in the next level.
12:20Bridge.
12:21E-D, I mean E-G-D-R-B.
12:28That bridge has left Jessie in troubled water.
12:31A slip from the girls is his only chance.
12:34Four.
12:36Oh, the tension is almost too much.
12:40T-N-E-T.
12:44So Caitlin is in and Jessie's place in the dojo all hangs on Zara.
12:48Three.
12:50Hat.
12:51T-A-H.
12:55Hat's off to her.
12:57She's done it.
12:58Zara's in and Jessie is out.
13:01He must relinquish his yellow brain belt and tread the lonely path of the...
13:06Walk of Eternal Regret.
13:09I feel pretty bad knowing that I got that far but then I got what eliminated.
13:16I think Peter's going to win the black belt because even though he was the first person to make a
13:20mistake,
13:21he's still got two sixes correct.
13:24So with five levels to go, only Peter, Ryan, Dina, Sarah, Caitlin and Zara have gained their orange brain belts.
13:33I was really nervous at the beginning but as I got through it I paced myself and I got through.
13:38I was really praying that Jessie would get it wrong because I knew if he got it right then I
13:44would probably be going.
13:45When I get the first one wrong I think, oh no, this is disaster and then I get the next
13:50one right and I get a bit better and then it pays off and yeah, here I am.
13:54Brain Titu.
13:58Brainy, not so brainy.
14:02Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
14:06Emails, internet brain training computer games.
14:08None of which would be possible without John Vincent Atanasoff who invented the first ever electronic digital computer back in
14:151937.
14:16www.computerboffintastic.com
14:19Now back in 1988 another electronic boffin called Robert Morris created the first computer virus and had the bright idea
14:25of releasing it onto the internet as a harmless experiment.
14:28Problem was his little virus quickly grew out of control causing millions of computers to crash worldwide and costing the
14:35US government alone over $10 million.
14:38Now that is what I call a bad day at the office.
14:42Brainy, John Atanasoff.
14:44Not so brainy, Robert Morris.
14:49Brain Jitsu.
14:54Pressure in Brain Jitsu Dojo rising.
14:56Now just six young hopeful remains to compete under watchful eye of Shihan.
15:02Caitlin, clone under radar so far but what's this space?
15:06Confident Peter, riding high after two wins in row.
15:10I got the first one wrong and then it really paid off the two sixes so I'm really pleased with
15:14that.
15:15Sara and Zara, the rhyming girls.
15:18I was really praying that Jesse would get it wrong because I knew if he got it right then I
15:23would probably be going.
15:25Ryan, who is placed second in both challenge.
15:29And Dina, first of girls in both levels.
15:32I was really nervous at the beginning but as I got through it I paced myself and I got through.
15:37Challenge about to get even tougher.
15:39Only two Brady will make through to final test.
15:42Table of Supreme Forecasts.
15:44Where must move ball with power of mind.
15:47For chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is a time for...
15:51Level three.
15:54Quiz Belt.
15:55Now, we all like to chat but did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main
16:01reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful?
16:05And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
16:10Now, if all that's doing your head in, allow me to explain.
16:14Imagine you're the trumpet player in an orchestra.
16:19Your main focus is on your own notes.
16:21But the conductor, well, he has to listen for everyone's notes.
16:26It's the same with the brain.
16:28There's the left half, which deals with the details.
16:31And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
16:34This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:41Hey, pump it up!
16:44Room of Mental Nourishment.
16:50It's our second visit to the brain training room of mental nourishment.
16:54Brainy's have a choice as to whether they take part or not.
16:57But any extra training they do will help them with the next challenge.
17:00For level three, it's communication.
17:04Brain training.
17:05Get into two groups.
17:07One group describes the picture in front of them, the other group draws it.
17:11OK, go on then.
17:13Next to the line, next to the number three, there's a line.
17:18And under the letter D...
17:19So, our brainy's are in two groups.
17:21One group should use the right side of their brains to describe clearly how to draw the picture.
17:26The other team should use the left side of their brains to concentrate on interpreting those instructions to draw the
17:33same picture.
17:34Four squares up?
17:35No.
17:35No.
17:36Definitely not.
17:37It's small.
17:38Just like a really small bit of the square.
17:39Like a ring.
17:41The size of a ring.
17:43It's not going very well, is it?
17:45The girls don't seem to be that clear.
17:47Um, is there a big circle around it?
17:50Yeah.
17:51And the other group are asking questions when they should be listening.
17:55So, it's a circle covering the four squares?
17:57Yeah.
17:57So, what it would look like now is an egg.
18:00It's all going a bit egg-shaped.
18:02Training tip time.
18:03Tip.
18:04Start with the overall shape, then add the details.
18:07You know where you drew, like, 3D?
18:11Yep.
18:12In that coordinate.
18:12Um, there's like, you drew it in a square.
18:15Yeah.
18:16And then, like, there's a square above it.
18:18The key to this training is to talk one at a time and listen to each other.
18:22Brainies must work as one team.
18:24After all, they might be on the other side of the fence in the next challenge.
18:27At the top right corner, put your pen there, and then draw a quarter of a circle to the left
18:36-hand side.
18:38Don't go to the other corner.
18:40That really looks, yeah, is it a pig?
18:42Yeah.
18:45Can we see your picture?
18:49What happened?
18:50Sorry.
18:51That's weird.
18:53It is really good because it's got the same, it's not exactly a circle, but it's the same shape as
18:58that one.
18:58Can we see yours so we can see how well we did?
19:01Yeah.
19:01It does look the same.
19:03Yeah, the eyes were a bit weird.
19:05It looks a bit like a baby cry.
19:06The girls' instructions were good.
19:08We only had to ask it once or twice what square it was in, the coordinates of that square, but
19:13otherwise it was good.
19:14But Pete, you shouldn't have had to ask at all.
19:17If I had to go with a partner for the next task, it would be Zara or Zara.
19:23Ooh, you old charmer, Ryan.
19:25The girls' instructions weren't really that clear, although the picture turned out okay.
19:30But will the girls fare better in the next round?
19:33And how will the boys do if they're on the instructing side of the fence?
19:38Time to find out as our six now put their communication training to the test.
19:47Gantanwak number crack!
19:50This level, test how well our brainies can communicate.
19:53So, our six need to be in teams of two.
19:56The chopsticks will decide their pairs.
20:01So, there's Dina and Peter, Caitlin and Ryan, Sarah and Zara, who Charming Ryan wanted to be with after the
20:08training, but perhaps not for the right reasons.
20:11As quickly as possible, teams must whack open six lanterns containing numbers that go together to form some.
20:18Pairs first need to decide who is Guider, who is Whacker.
20:24Whackers will be blindfolded and will be relying on Guider to locate lanterns.
20:30When all six are opened, brainies stop clock by shouting,
20:33Bring it through!
20:35Quicker they whack lanterns, more time they have to pick up numbers and work out some.
20:40When brainies are happy with answer, hit gong!
20:44First two teams to provide correct answer get green belts and advance to next level.
20:50One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
20:54The key to success here is for the Guider to use the right side of their brain to follow their
20:59teammates' progress and give them clear instructions.
21:02For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain to focus on these instructions and nothing
21:10else.
21:12Step two, small steps.
21:14First to put their communication training to the test are the rhyming girls, Sarah and Zara.
21:19Um, raise the bat up and hit.
21:23Um, go, go, um, right.
21:26Whack!
21:28Both girls were on the talking team in the training and their instructions had room for improvement.
21:34Hopefully Zara can kick the right, talking side of her brain into Guider now.
21:38Whack!
21:40Whack!
21:41Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's coming together for the girls.
21:45Uh, turn slightly to your right.
21:48Zara is getting flustered and her instructions are more confusing than a sumo on a diet.
21:54Oh, come on, man.
21:55Whack!
21:56Whack!
21:56Even Zara is getting frustrated with her partner.
21:59They must both remain calm or their dream of the black brain belt will crumble like crispy seaweed.
22:05Whack straight.
22:06The right side of Zara's brain can't seem to get going.
22:09High, higher.
22:12Brain jitsu.
22:14They've finally finished.
22:15But with a time of three minutes and one second, Ryan must be thanking his lucky stars he wasn't paired
22:20up with them now.
22:21And Zara isn't happy at all.
22:23He's taking me good directions.
22:24Ryan, you were good.
22:26You were good.
22:29Forward, right.
22:30Now Dina and Peter.
22:33Dina talked and Peter listened in the training and they've gone for the same combo here.
22:38And it seems to be working because they're whacking lanterns faster than a ninja on wheels.
22:44Confident Peter is listening well and Dina's spot on with her instructions.
22:48Whack.
22:50Whack.
22:51Forward.
22:53Forward.
22:54Whack.
22:56Turn to your left.
22:58Whack.
22:59Brain jitsu.
23:00They've finished already.
23:02With one minute and six seconds, two minutes faster than Zara and Zara, can Caitlin and Ryan beat that excellent
23:08time?
23:11Forward.
23:12Forward.
23:12Left.
23:13Caitlin and Ryan were both on the listening team in the training, but Caitlin seems to have got the right
23:18side of her brain up to speed very quickly.
23:21And these two are making a better pairing than sushi and soy sauce.
23:25Whack.
23:27Forward.
23:28Whack.
23:30Forward.
23:32Backward a bit.
23:34Whack.
23:36Forward.
23:38Whack.
23:39Whack.
23:41Brain jitsu.
23:43They've finished already.
23:44And with an excellent time of 41 seconds, they're first to collect their numbers.
23:52Peter and Dina are next.
23:57With Ryman girls Sarah and Zara last.
24:02These are the numbers our teams are looking for. See if you can work out the answer.
24:08Three times seven plus four equals 25.
24:11Caitlin and Ryan take a moment to check their answer before they gong.
24:14Whack.
24:16Peter and Dina gong next with Sarah and Zara finishing last.
24:20Whack.
24:21The other teams have got their answers correct, so the Ryman girls must face each other in the...
24:26Stay off.
24:28Whack.
24:43Whack.
24:44Whack.
24:44Oh, it's all over in the blink of an eye.
24:46Zara's in and Zara is out.
24:54Walk of eternal regret.
24:57I'm really upset because I thought I would go further and the stir-off was a complete disaster.
25:05I think Peter's going to win the black belt because he's done so well in the past.
25:11So with four levels left, it's green rain belts for Peter, Ryan, Dina, Zara and Caitlin.
25:17In the stairs I did it with Zara and it was quite stressful because she's my best friend.
25:24And I didn't want her to go out, but at the same time I didn't want me to go out.
25:28The training was good because it taught me to listen with a bit more detail.
25:31I'm really happy now that I've got food to the next round.
25:36Brain Ditto!
25:40Level four.
25:42Blue Vault!
25:44This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala.
25:50The area that responds to threat.
25:53Ha ha!
25:57Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
26:00Maybe it was on a dark night.
26:02Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
26:07Stress can make you lose focus.
26:09Fact.
26:10Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control.
26:16Room of Mental Nourishment.
26:21We're back in the Room of Mental Nourishment and it's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome
26:26fear.
26:30Brain training.
26:31Form a circle.
26:32Pass a disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said a word beginning with A.
26:39After one minute, the brainy holding the drink has to drink it.
26:43And today's drink is Cod Liver Oil.
26:45Ooh, my favourite.
26:46I'll start then.
26:50Oh, okay.
26:51That looks like foil.
26:54Animal.
26:56Apple.
26:59Adventurous.
27:00Alphabet.
27:02Actress.
27:04Aeroplane.
27:06Alligator.
27:07Antelope.
27:08Air.
27:10Actor.
27:11Accident.
27:13Aeroplane.
27:14I said that.
27:15You don't have to drink it yet.
27:16You just have to say another word.
27:18Okay.
27:18Er.
27:21Come on, Ryan.
27:22Override your amygdala.
27:24Acrobat.
27:26Ant.
27:28Anagram.
27:32Abracadabra.
27:33Algebra.
27:36You're letting the fear of the drink get to you, Dina.
27:38Focus only on the word.
27:40Apricot.
27:41Addition.
27:41I said apricot.
27:42Did you?
27:43Yeah.
27:45Oh, Dina.
27:46You have to drink it.
27:47Dina.
27:48Don't giggle.
27:48That gong means the minute's up and Dina has to drink the Cod Liver Oil.
27:56Not too bad.
27:57That was pretty daring, Dina.
27:59No hesitation at all.
28:01But here's a training tip.
28:03Tip.
28:04Concentrate.
28:05Try to blank out the time and fear of the drink to avoid panicking.
28:09Just think of it as apple juice, I mean.
28:12But you don't want to drink it, okay?
28:13So you don't want to see.
28:14Oh, okay.
28:15I'll start, okay?
28:16Yep.
28:17So, if you imagine the drink as something nice like apple juice, you'll stay calm.
28:22If you're afraid of the drink, it'll cloud your focus and you won't be able to come up with any
28:26word at all.
28:27Amazing.
28:27If you practice this technique at home, it will help you focus better in pressured situations like exams.
28:32Amusement.
28:34Assignment.
28:35Audio.
28:38Acrylic.
28:40Uh-oh.
28:41All Ryan's thinking about is Cod Liver Oil.
28:46That's another minute up and Charming Ryan has to drink.
28:52Watery.
28:53Oily.
28:56My technique was, while everyone else was saying a word, for me to think of a word, so that when,
29:02so I had a word prepared, so that when it was my go, I didn't hesitate like you do.
29:07I was thinking about them in my head, but then when it got around to you guys, I would say
29:12it and then you guys would go really fast and then I would lose one.
29:15Yeah, that's what happened, I forgot it.
29:17Yeah.
29:18So, Daring Dina and Charming Ryan both struggled in the training.
29:22Sarah did very well and confident Pete was true to form, but who'll be eliminated next?
29:28Our five must now put their brain training to the test to overcome fear and compete for their blue brain
29:34belt.
29:35Creepy Crawly Word Grab.
29:38This level will test of mind over matter for brainies and will push them to really overcome their fear.
29:44Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
29:49Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each.
29:55They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
30:01To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore the creepy crawlies.
30:09The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters.
30:16Oh, that's disgusting.
30:20Our brainies should dig deep beneath the worms and keep a keen eye out for the golden letters.
30:25Because if they find one and manage to use it in their word, they'll double their score.
30:33Daring Dina and Charming Ryan struggled in the training, but both look pretty fearless here.
30:38They've already pulled out their maximum seven letters.
30:43Confident Peter and Sarah did well in the training, and they're both remaining calm here too.
30:49In fact, all five of our brainies are doing a sterling job.
30:54The gong means that their minute is up, and now our brainies have another minute to make the longest word
30:59they can out of the letters they've collected.
31:03Can Ryan get the X in somewhere?
31:08Dina's got a few options there.
31:11See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
31:21So, how have our green belt holders fared?
31:26Beat.
31:29Six points for Peter, but can the others beat it?
31:33Ox.
31:34Excellent use of an X. Nine points for Ryan.
31:41Pains.
31:41It took great pains to get there, but Dina gets eight points.
31:48Mode.
31:49Seven points for Sarah means that Confident Peter's place in the dojo all rests on Kaitlyn's score.
31:56Beep.
31:57Toot, toot, beep, beep.
31:59With eight points, Kaitlyn's in and Confident Peter is out.
32:02And the others look shocked.
32:10Walk of eternal regret.
32:14The brain training was useful, because I didn't really think about the worms, but maybe if I would have got
32:20into one of the bigger piles, I may have got better letter.
32:24I think we'll see Ryan and Sarah in the final, because they can both keep their concentration well.
32:32So, with only three levels to go, Ryan, Dina, Sarah and Kaitlyn proudly wear their blue brain belts.
32:39In the training, I used the tip, and I thought of the cod liver oil as apple juice, and I
32:44used that for thinking of the worms as mud.
32:48I feel great that I'm in the lead, and it's given me a great confidence boost.
32:53Brain T2.
32:57Brainy.
32:58Not so brainy.
33:01Who's the clever clogs, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
33:05It's the 1870s, and a geezer called Alexander Graham Bell goes and affects the old dog and bone, or telephone,
33:11so you and I can gossip, gas, and natter to people all over the world.
33:15Telephone-tastic.
33:16Hello?
33:17Mum, I'm on the telly.
33:18I'll call you back.
33:19Where was I?
33:20Oh yeah, phones, off to Finland.
33:22Every year, a load of Finns, and folks from all over the world, take part in the Mobile Phone Throwing
33:27World Championships.
33:28Why?
33:28Well, to see how far they can throw them, of course.
33:31Right.
33:31Gotta ring the old deer back.
33:32Brainy.
33:33Alexander Graham Bell.
33:35Not so brainy.
33:36Phone flingers in Finland.
33:39Brain Jitsu.
33:42Tension in Brain Jitsu Dojo mounting.
33:45Now, just four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Shihan.
33:51Daring Dina, who could be Dark Horse of Dojo.
33:54Charming Ryan.
33:56First two levels in row.
33:57I feel great that I'm in the lead, and it's given me a great confidence boost.
34:03Caitlin.
34:04Second two challenges in row.
34:06A strong contender for Black, and Sara.
34:08It doesn't really matter if I came fourth, or third, or second, or first.
34:11It just matters that I'm in that final round.
34:14Only two brainy will make final test.
34:17Table of Supreme Walkers.
34:19Where?
34:19Must move forward with power of mind.
34:22Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within their grasp.
34:25Here's the time for...
34:27Level five.
34:28Red Vault!
34:31Now, ha.
34:32If you've just taken up competitive bog snorkelling,
34:35then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing wonders for the old grey matter.
34:41Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
34:48You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head,
34:52which keeps your brain cells topped up with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
34:57So, in level five, my brainy's are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
35:03Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
35:07And this is what our brainy's are going to train for now.
35:11Room of Mental Nourishment.
35:16It's our brainy's fourth visit to the room of mental nourishment.
35:20For this brain training exercise, they're going to be working their brains by learning something new.
35:27Brain training.
35:28Flick the bean bag from the top of your head to the back of your neck.
35:44You see, it isn't as easy as it looks, Daring Dina.
35:48This exercise needs to be taxing.
35:50So the thinking part of your brain and the doing part of your brain are equally pushed
35:54and you're warmed up for the next level of the dojo.
35:58Ryan's got it.
35:59Look, I've done it.
35:59Yeah.
36:01I've done it but it's on my back.
36:03I'm the only one who hasn't done it yet.
36:05Coffee.
36:07Because of my ponytail.
36:09No excuse, Caitlin.
36:10Sarah's got a ponytail and she's done it.
36:12Time for a training tip.
36:14Tip.
36:15Have confidence.
36:16Compliment each other.
36:18Ryan, you're doing okay.
36:20Just okay?
36:21Yeah.
36:23Dina.
36:24Very good technique.
36:27Caitlin, keep trying.
36:30Boosting your confidence really can help if you're learning something new.
36:34If you stay positive and tell yourself you can do it, you're much more likely to succeed
36:38at your new skill.
36:39Try not locking your head forward first because it'll just slip off.
36:42Try and go back then forward.
36:46So, charming Ryan was happy sharing his beanbag knowledge with the lovely Sarah.
36:51But will it help her beat him in the next round?
36:54Caitlin never really mastered her new skill.
36:56Will it stop her from getting the red?
36:59Only time will tell as our four must now put their train in to the test.
37:05Chop!
37:06Chop!
37:07Chop!
37:07Don't drop!
37:09To win red brain belt, brainies must remain mentally confident as they learn new physical
37:14skill.
37:15Remaining four must keep ball in airflow and guide it along obstacle course, through hoops
37:21and into basket.
37:23It is race against clock, but brainies must remain confident.
37:26There is five second penalty every time ball drops.
37:30Brainy with slowest time will be eliminated.
37:34The tip for my brainies in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
37:41Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:46The atmosphere in the dojo is more intense than a sumo's food fight as all four of our
37:51brainies get started.
37:52They must achieve mental focus to master this new physical skill.
37:57Ryan did well in the training and was even giving advice to Sarah.
38:01Even though he's made a few mistakes here, he isn't letting it knock his confidence.
38:06His head is up and he looks calm.
38:08He's mastered this new skill so it's smooth sailing right to the end.
38:27Well done!
38:33Daring Dina managed to master the bean bag in the training and it looks like she's tamed
38:37the air pipe here because so far no penalties.
38:51Dina's face is the picture of concentration.
38:54She hasn't taken her eye off the ball and has focused her mind to control her body.
39:00The perfect run, what a girl!
39:04Now Sarah.
39:05Sarah seems to be struggling here.
39:07Her eyes are following the ball but she's not actually moving her body.
39:12To master this physical skill, Sarah must focus her mind totally on controlling her body.
39:17She mustn't get frustrated at her mistakes.
39:26Not a great run but was it enough to get the red?
39:30Finally, Caitlyn.
39:33Caitlyn really struggled in the training but she can't blame her ponytail this time if she doesn't shine in this
39:38challenge.
39:39Not a great start, will she let her mistakes get to her?
39:49Looks like Caitlyn has found her focus and glides slowly to the end of the course.
39:56But was it fast enough to make the semi-finals?
40:00This competition is closer than identical Japanese twins.
40:03Time for the results.
40:07Ryan, 56 seconds with 8 penalties, that's 1.33 in total.
40:14Dina, 56 seconds with no penalties, what a woman!
40:20Sarah, 42 seconds but 13 penalties, that's 1 minute 47 seconds in total.
40:26Sarah's place in the dojo, hangs on Caitlyn's time.
40:3054 seconds with 9 penalties, so 1 minute 39 seconds.
40:35Caitlyn is in and Sarah is out.
40:47Walk of eternal regret.
40:51I'm pretty gutted that I didn't go through that round but I'm happy that I went this far.
40:58I think that Dina might win the black belt. She's really confident and I think she might win.
41:06So, with only 2 levels left, Ryan, Dina and Caitlyn stand proud in red.
41:11I'm really determined because we're getting closer to the end and I really want to win the black belt.
41:15It's a real confidence boost that I got through it.
41:27It's this level which will decide which 2 of my remaining braineys will go on to battle it out for
41:35the black belt.
41:37Now, imagine you're in your school play.
41:40As well as lines to remember and moving around on stage, there's also the audience watching you.
41:46It's remembering stuff under pressure like this that Level 6 is all about.
41:52It centres around 3 areas of the brain.
41:55The scene part, the occipital lobes.
41:58The memory part, the temporal lobes.
42:01And the movement part, the cerebellum.
42:04To the max.
42:06Room of mental nourishment.
42:10With only 3 braineys remaining, this penultimate brain training challenge is all about improving your memory.
42:17Brain training. Memorise the sequence of colours.
42:21Oh, I thought you had to eat them.
42:23So, in this task, our 3 remaining braineys are exercising their occipital lobes, or seeing part of their brain,
42:31and their temporal lobes, the memory bank.
42:34I'll go first then.
42:37Last minute revision.
42:39Yeah.
42:41Orange, purple, yellow, purple, red, blue, red, green, green, silver, green, green, silver.
42:51Close.
42:53You're really close.
42:53You just got two wrong.
42:55Well, because you added a few.
42:56You added a green and a silver.
42:58Orange, purple, red, purple, blue, red, green, green, silver.
43:05Green, green, green, green.
43:06You missed a lot.
43:08I think you missed the purple out.
43:10Yeah, and then...
43:11Or was it yours?
43:11And you missed the red out?
43:12Yeah.
43:12Then you got that right.
43:15Then you just stuck that.
43:15One of the greens.
43:16Can you go first?
43:17Yeah, I'll tell you.
43:18OK.
43:19You've had longer to do it, so you probably should do it better.
43:22Orange, purple, yellow, purple, red, blue, red, green, green, silver, green, gray.
43:37well done i went first though so it'll sort of fit oh excuses excuses caitlyn here's a training
43:45tip to help you tip create a song linking the colors together just sort of like think of a
43:53theme tune like eastenders and like sort of like we'll try that three two one go purple yellow red
44:01green gray orange blue green green red purple silver memory tests like this are a great way of
44:12training your brain next time you're learning your times table sing it to a well-known tune
44:17and it should help you remember it purple yellow green red gray orange blue green green and purple
44:27and silver got these models around and you missed the red that's it yeah purple orange red green gray
44:37orange blue green green red green oh i can't do it anymore purple yellow red green gray orange blue
44:50green green red purple and silver yeah you got that right which method would you use if it's memory
44:58next um probably do repetition yeah i think i'll do the song repetition so there's a divide in the group
45:08about the training technique dina said she'll use the musical tip but will ignoring it mean make or break
45:14for the other two there's only one way to find out our final three must now put their memory train
45:19into
45:20the test to win their brown brain belt and secure their place in the final
45:26super memory dizzy dash
45:30each brainy is spun around on dizzy wheel a total of ten times their task to use all their power
45:37of focus
45:37to memorize five images in front of them then race against clock to cross balancing beam and collect
45:45same five images from ten hanging above them then must arrange images in reverse order
45:55when they are happy with their selection a hit of gong stops clock
46:03my tip for the brainies is to keep focused on the main objective and use their training to link the
46:10five images together so our final three brave the wheel to compete for their brown brain belt
46:17and for a chance to triumph over the table of supreme focus time to spin
46:28will their memory training help our brainies ignore the effects of the wheel and memorize the images
46:34the order they are looking for is at the bottom of the screen
46:43first up charming ryan he's a little unsteady on his feet but he gets straight in with picking the images
46:51this is the ultimate test of distraction for our brainies
46:54not only are they under pressure as they race against the clock but they have to fight their dizziness
46:59to collect only the five images they saw from the ten hanging above them
47:04they then have to arrange those images in reverse order
47:07every image they get wrong means a five second penalty
47:10the brainy with the slowest time will be eliminated from the dojo
47:16he's got the hardest spot on but will he be fast enough to get the brown
47:22now daring dina
47:24whoops dina nearly fell over but she's not letting it put her off
47:28she did well in the training and looks incredibly focused on her goal
47:35don't forget this challenge decides which two brainies will go through to that final round
47:39the table of supreme focus
47:47another great run and she's got a full house as well
47:52can caitlin make it a 100% record for the group
47:57caitlin said she wouldn't use the singing tip to memorize the images
48:00and decided she'd try repetition instead
48:03will this technique see her through to the final for the chance to win the black
48:11caitlin picked the right five images but can she beat the others to get them in reverse order
48:22who done noodles another perfect round with no penalties for any of our final three brainies
48:27it all hangs on how long they took to complete the course time for the results
48:32ryan 52 seconds an excellent time
48:35dina 51.9 seconds unbelievable there's just 0.1 of a second between dina and ryan
48:42so ryan's place hangs on caitlin's score
48:4858 seconds which means ryan's in and caitlin is out
48:56walk of eternal regret
49:00i'm really disappointed that i didn't get to the final round
49:04i didn't use the singing from the brain training because it didn't really work for me
49:08i think dina is going to win the black belt because i think she's a bit of a stronger person
49:16so with only one level to go it leaves just charming ryan and daring dina to wear the brown
49:22brain belts in preparation for the final i really thought at the beginning that i wasn't going to
49:27win because there were so many other confident people i'm really glad that i got through to the
49:31last round as well so it's one step closer to the black belt
49:40eight young hopeful arrive at brain training dojo to fight for brain jitsu black brain belt
49:47as challenges got tougher brainies got fewer some lack control others just miss out
49:55but one by one has been eliminated till just two remain daring dina riding high after two win in a
50:03row i feel really really great and i'm really really happy that i'm in the final and charming ryan
50:09whose understated confidence has worked well so far i'm excited and i'm a bit nervous about the last
50:16round i'm really glad that i got through to the last one as well so it's one step closer to
50:20the black belt
50:21but who will use brain training to the max to win final challenge
50:29level seven black belt so this is it between my two remaining brainies and the black belt stands
50:38brain jitsu's ultimate challenge a mental duel that is head to head in every sense the battlefield a table
50:48but not just any table for this my friends is the table of supreme focus where our two brainies will
50:55attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind by getting this far they've
51:03already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure but now they must learn
51:09to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm to prepare them my two finalists will need to
51:16get into the zone room of mental nourishment yes we welcome daring dina and charming ryan our two brown
51:26brain belt holders to the final room of mental nourishment for this task our brainies must bring together
51:32all the training they've received so far to achieve ultimate focus brain training mentally prepare
51:39yourself for the final task don't let the sound put you off
51:49dina seems distracted but ryan is focusing well
51:57you're supposed to be finding your inner calm dina not filling your inner hunger
52:04how did you find that sound i just ignored it it was quite all right
52:07hmm training tip time tip focus on one object in the room
52:18i'm really determined because we're getting closer to the end and i really want to run the black belt
52:23i'm really glad that i got to the last one it's one step closer to the black belt
52:28do you think you could beat me i'm not sure i think i'm gonna beat you don't get overconfident
52:36to survive the table of supreme focus and win the black brain belt our brainies must now put all
52:41their training to the test will daring dina make it three wins in a row or will charming ryan
52:48pip dina to the fourth let's find out table of supreme focus
52:57rules are simple each brainy must push ball to the opponent's end of table using only power of mind
53:05sensors in brainy's headbands measure brain waves this is converted into electrical signal which moves
53:12ball more focused mind stronger signal and faster ball will travel see how brainies are doing on this
53:20readout two lines represent each player's brain waves lower the line more concentrated their mind
53:33to make sure this is the test of all tests our brainy's must win the best of three rounds
53:39so this is the big one if they are to succeed our two finalists must use all their brain training
53:46to
53:46enter their zone of absolute focus this is the reason they came to the dojo this is the moment they've
53:53been training for
54:01the she hand starts them off and the mind races on
54:06ryan's off to a flying start his green brain wave line is straight and low and shows he's got a
54:13focused mind
54:15dina's looking around and can't seem to find her focus
54:21so ryan has won the first round he's achieved maximum focus and will have gained even more
54:26confidence from that win daring dina can't seem to settle and find her center can she pull it back in
54:32the second round to even the score
54:38ryan's straight off the starting blocks again and the ball is hurtling towards dina's end

55:02a true master of the mind and worthy winner of the black belt of brain jitsu i feel really glad
55:08and
55:09brilliant there's no way to describe it that i've won the black belt in the final task i felt really
55:15relaxed but dina she looked really calm but then i thought don't let that fall me so i just didn't
55:21think of anything at all as ever glory for one brings disappointment for another she fought valiantly
55:29but now daring dina must leave the dojo walk of eternal regret i'm really really gutted that i
55:38haven't won the black belt but i'm really happy that i got really far i think ryan was a good
55:44winner
55:44and i think he deserves the black belt because all through the game he was really determined
55:49so daring dina lost focus when it mattered most but it's triumph for charming ryan
55:59he never let his concentration waver he was placed first or second throughout his time in the dojo
