00:00It's getting ugly in Beantown and specifically for me, pro baseball today, your boy DRS sat
00:04here on some of these opening shows going, hey man, keep an eye on those Boston Red Sox.
00:08I didn't mean to be in last place, Craig Mish.
00:10I thought they would be battling for the top of the division.
00:13So many things going wrong.
00:15A fan base that you know you have to perform in front of here.
00:17And if you don't, they're going to be angry, wearing paper bags, getting tossed out, chanting
00:22sell the team.
00:23This isn't the Boston that we know and love.
00:25This team's supposed to be making runs, not going in the opposite direction.
00:27We just talked about the Baltimore Orioles.
00:29What was their record?
00:30Well, look at this.
00:31Same as the Boston Red Sox, 22 and 29, 9 and 15 against teams above 500, 5 and 6 in
00:37run
00:38one games.
00:38And even though their expected outcomes should be a little bit better than what they are.
00:42This, Craig, is a disaster season in 2026 for the Sox.
00:47Yeah, playing horrible at Fenway Park also.
00:50So that would tell you that the fans are not even having any fun when they show up to the
00:54games, let alone, you know, Alex Cora is gone.
00:58You know, they do the same thing that Philly does.
01:00Philly gets hot.
01:01Boston goes the other way.
01:02And so they are just not playing well at all against good teams and sort of winning some
01:07games against the teams that they should.
01:09I guess you mentioned the word rebuild.
01:12This is something the Red Sox almost never do.
01:14Although it did feel like that a few years ago, if you remember when they brought in Heim
01:18Bloom from Tampa Bay to run things, they traded Mookie Betts.
01:21I know that didn't work out, but Heim Bloom got a bunch of draft picks and I think he did
01:26really well with those picks and those international players.
01:29But the Red Sox were like, nah, we don't want to, we don't want to go with a small payroll
01:33and win a little bit.
01:34We want to go big and win a lot.
01:36So they fire Bloom, they bring in Craig Breslow.
01:38Donnie, what happened here?
01:41Like, this was just a total fault, I think, honestly, on the Red Sox management here to
01:48do this because I thought they were headed in the right direction with Bloom and look
01:51at the Cardinals, the way that they're playing.
01:52My gosh.
01:54Yeah.
01:54I mean, Donnie, honestly, do they have a lot of pieces to even trade and get back that
01:59aren't tagged with these huge salaries?
02:01Like, you know, they got Ranger Suarez.
02:02He's pitching great.
02:03Congratulations.
02:03You owe them $200 million.
02:05No one is going to take him right now with this looming CBA and everything else for that.
02:09So they're in an impossible spot.
02:12The Red Sox are going to lose a lot of games.
02:14I don't think that they could sell because there really isn't a lot to sell.
02:17And then that mirror is staring at them for next year.
02:20I don't know where they're headed.
02:21I thought they had a nice balance of players, but apparently the balance is certainly one
02:25side of the scales and it's been more losing than winning here.
02:28Craig, do you have any thoughts or any notes here on Garrett Crochet?
02:30Look, one of the pitchers that we thought would be in the Cy Young race down on the
02:33IL.
02:34Is he expected to come back sooner or later?
02:36Or again, why are we rushing this guy back then if it's going to be a lost season?
02:41Probably part of it.
02:42I think, look, internally, they probably feel like they still have a chance because they're
02:47not that far out.
02:48Everyone would just look to Cleveland last year, Donnie, and see that they won like 10
02:51in a row or 12 in a row.
02:52So they're still going to feel like here on Memorial Day they have a chance.
02:56So I don't think that you'll see Crochet before next month.
02:59So that's only like a week or two away.
03:01And I do think that he'll be back in June and pitching for them.
03:04And I do think that he's there long term, but he's one of the very few valuable pieces
03:09that they have.
03:09So as you said, Donnie, which is a good point, why in the world would you rush him back?
03:13Why?
03:14There would be absolutely no reason to do that.
03:16But look, credit to a couple of players.
03:18Rafaela looks like a good player.
03:20Abreu looks like a good player as well for them.
03:23But look, everyone says that missing out on Bregman was really the key.
03:27And I was like, yeah, I mean, I love Alex Bregman, but come on, he's one player.
03:30It does turn out.
03:31That was a big part of their season, not getting him.
03:34No doubt about it.
03:35And also understand that it's like, oh, Craig, why don't they just make a couple trades
03:38here to get better?
03:38When Ed had the expanded wild cards that you have now, nobody's just giving up prospects
03:42for making trades this early in the season because everybody still thinks they can
03:45possibly make a run to the playoff.
03:47So it gets harder to do that and make a rebound early in the season.
03:50Keep an eye on those Boston Red Sox.
03:51But man, one of those teams I thought would be vastly improved this year and battling
03:54for the top, just battling for the bottom at this point right now.
