Seth and Sean see if Kendrick Perkins' awful take about Shedeur can defeat current champ Stephen A. Smith's. Who are we kidding though? Perk's gonna dominate everyone.
Transcript
00:00Previously on Payne and Pendergast, we played this take by former NBA star and now hot take podcaster Kendrick Perkins
00:13saying that Shadur Sanders is the most powerful black man since Barack Obama was inaugurated in 2009.
00:21Shadur Sanders is the most powerful black man since 2009.
00:31You know what happened in 2009?
00:33Yeah.
00:33That's when President Obama got elected in office.
00:36He's the most powerful black man since 2009.
00:40You said you were sitting there watching a game in your house and what you did, you ran with the TV.
00:45Yeah, right.
00:46Right?
00:46What was you doing, DB?
00:48I was cheering.
00:49You was cheering like a mother f***er.
00:51When Shadur Sanders is on the field, and when I say powerful, powerful because there's two sides of it, right?
00:59Think about it.
01:00Okay?
01:00You got the black community.
01:02He bringing the whole black community together.
01:04I ain't ran across one black person that said one bad thing about Shadur.
01:10We want him.
01:10And guess what?
01:11Now, one, because he has the balance.
01:14He has the balance of that I'm arrogant, but I'm humble, too.
01:18Yeah.
01:18Right?
01:19He's having fun with this s***.
01:19And he's having fun with this s***.
01:21And on top of that, y'all want me to say it ain't, y'all want me to fear it ain't gonna happen.
01:26Yeah.
01:26He talking s***.
01:27I love that s***, bro.
01:28He's the most powerful black man in sports.
01:31No other, no other.
01:32Matter of fact, f*** black man.
01:34He's the most powerful player in sports.
01:37Powerful player in sports.
01:38So he started off as the most powerful black man since Obama.
01:41Then he dialed it back to most powerful black man in sports.
01:45But then he upped it to, again, the most powerful person in sports.
01:49Okay.
01:50Which, last I checked, included white people, Hispanic people.
01:55Asians.
01:56Yeah.
01:56So he's the most powerful black man since Obama.
01:59Yeah.
01:59But the most powerful person in sports right now.
02:02In sports right now.
02:03Yeah.
02:03I don't know.
02:04We'd have to do a runoff between those two for which is the most ludicrous thing.
02:07He had three takes baked into one that are really, really bad.
02:10I feel like this might be the bad take of all time because I feel like even people who
02:16like Shadur Sanders can't sit and agree with this take.
02:21Yeah.
02:21I think he could be very polarizing.
02:23Yes.
02:23He might be the most polarizing black man in sports.
02:26Yes.
02:27Not in society.
02:29Right.
02:29By a long shot.
02:31Correct.
02:31Maybe the most polarizing black man in sports right now.
02:35Yeah.
02:35Right this moment.
02:36Right.
02:36Because Colin Kaepernick has been out since 2009 as well.
02:39Yeah.
02:39And that became a crossover.
02:41Like Shadur Sanders is still largely still a sports phenomenon.
02:44Yeah.
02:44It's not a crossover story to the same degree obviously that Colin Kaepernick was.
02:48I don't know man.
02:49It's hard to find.
02:50Most powerful.
02:51Most powerful in sports.
02:53Person in sports right now.
02:55Person in sports.
02:56In sports.
02:56Yeah.
02:56This is just a judge.
02:58So he's got two of the worst takes of all time.
03:01Baked into one.
03:01Right in that.
03:02Right in that one take that started off as a.
03:04It started off as a seedling.
03:06Yes.
03:07And it grew into.
03:08Okay.
03:08So here's.
03:09A mushroom cloud of horrendous bad takes.
03:12And we're going to do take a mania right now.
03:14And the defending champ is Stephen A. Smith who also is talking about Shadur.
03:17But from over a week ago when he made his debut coming into the middle of a game.
03:22And he blames Stefanski for Shadur being bad.
03:24We're going to play that in a second.
03:25Yeah.
03:25We're only doing take a mania today because Seth isn't here on Friday.
03:28But I feel like this Perkins take is so bad that we might have done an emergency take a
03:32mania even if this were a normal week on Wednesday.
03:35But even trying to power rank it.
03:37Remember that person that got upset in all holier than thou because we were trying to
03:42power rank whether it's worse to get kicked in the nargs or spit on.
03:46Yeah.
03:46This feels like you'd be asking somebody to like, Poe, what are your least, what are
03:52your three least favorite things?
03:54Yeah.
03:55Asparagus.
03:55Yeah.
03:57Mondays.
03:57Yep.
03:58Or nuclear holocaust.
04:00Right.
04:02Let's do that, Paul.
04:04This is the nuclear annihilation of bad takes.
04:07All right.
04:07So let's do this here then.
04:09All of a sudden, it's like Clubber Lang walking into the stadium in here.
04:13And Stephen A. Smith is Rocky Balboa trying to fight him.
04:17Here is the current champ.
04:19Does Perkins take this down?
04:21What I'm saying is, where Kevin Stefanski loses me, you're a two-time coach of the year.
04:282020, 2023.
04:29We know you can coach.
04:31We know you know what you're doing.
04:33How does a quarterback go out there in a game like that and look that ill-prepared?
04:36Yeah.
04:37How does that happen?
04:38See, that's where I push back on you to some degree in terms of something's
04:43not right because we could say a lot of things about Kevin Stefanski.
04:48We can't say he don't have his teams prepared.
04:51We can't say that he doesn't.
04:52Like, if you don't have a talent, you don't have a talent.
04:54Well, he doesn't have his team prepared because you don't have the backup quarterback prepared.
04:58That's what I'm saying.
04:58Yeah.
04:59That's my point.
04:59That's my point.
05:00My point is, that's not an error he would make.
05:04He's too wise.
05:05He's too knowledgeable.
05:06I mean, say it's Stefanski might be tanking on Shadour.
05:10He's making the perfect argument against Shadour Sanders unless, as he would submit,
05:15is that Kevin Stefanski is willfully pointing out that he's sabotaging Shadour Sanders or
05:22something.
05:22So he points out a bunch of things we actually have evidence for.
05:24Yeah.
05:25And then uses it to buttress a vast and wild conspiracy theory in the opposite direction.
05:32And yet, I sense he's about to get thrown through a table by Ken Perkins here, right?
05:37Yeah.
05:37Yeah.
05:38Here we go.
05:40Okay.
05:40I mean, I've got like six challengers here that Kendrick Perkins is going to blaze through.
05:45I just, I can't keep doing Kendrick Perkins every other week, man.
05:48Okay.
05:49For now, he's the champ.
05:50You just made him the champ.
05:51Yeah, he's the champ right now.
05:52He's the champ right now.
05:53All right.
05:53And by the way, we've had multiple of our black listeners be like, hey, Kendrick, don't
05:57speak for me.
05:58Slow down.
05:58I don't like Shadour Sanders either.
06:01Like, yeah, like, yeah.
06:02Trying to, as soon as you start to speak, it's like if I tried to speak for all white
06:06people or something.
06:07Right, right.
06:07That's going to go south or right quick.
06:09Very quick.
06:09You know?
06:10Yes.
06:10Yeah.
06:10Like, don't speak for me, you bastards.
06:13Oh, my God.
06:14Yeah.
06:14So, okay.
06:15So, Kendrick Perkins is the new champ with a take that I, I mean, this might take a while.
06:21I don't know what's happening today, but here we go.
06:24This was J.J.
06:25McCarthy.
06:26This is from actually a couple weeks ago, but I wanted to replay it because of how ludicrous
06:29it sounds now that he is putting up numbers that are among the worst in the history of
06:36football.
06:37Yeah.
06:37You know, like, EPA per, you start for X amount of starts, he's like 831 out of 832
06:44since the Great Depression or something like that.
06:46Like, it's, J.J.
06:47McCarthy is ridiculously bad at football.
06:50He was asked after a Vikings win, kind of a win in spite of J.J.
06:54McCarthy, like, hey, do you flip a switch while you're out there?
06:58Do you go to a different place in your mind on game day?
07:01I feel like I do.
07:04Yeah.
07:04There's definitely a level of a switch that gets flipped.
07:08You know, for me, it's, you know, that, I call him nine.
07:14Nine comes out and I got to understand, like, okay, he can't be at his peak performance throughout
07:20three and a half hours.
07:21So, how do I find little ways, you know, on the sideline, you know, get back to my breath,
07:26get back to my visualization that could kind of maintain that intense, you know, competitive
07:31stamina throughout the whole game.
07:33But, yeah, it's just, you know, the pure will, determination to get the job done.
07:36I hadn't quite grasped at the time the fact that he was speaking about his alter ego in
07:41the third person.
07:42Yeah.
07:43I guess I didn't really realize how weird it was.
07:47Yeah, it was very strange.
07:48Yeah, this falls into the category of really weird, just annoying stuff when you're a bad
07:53quarterback, too, and you think you're going to tough and grit your way through to being
07:56a good quarterback.
07:57But, no, no.
07:58He's not even close.
07:59Yeah, I mean, Perkins is going to kill all these guys.
08:02Yeah.
08:02All right, this is, I wanted to play this one and take a mania just because I've never seen
08:06a son, a football player, ask people to free his dad and shout out his boy.
08:13But this was Brian Kelly's son, Kenzel Kelly, on the sidelines at LSU during the LSU final
08:20home game, senior night.
08:22He was wearing a shirt underneath his jersey that said, free BK.
08:26Yo, Tigers, long live BK.
08:29No, free my boy.
08:31Free my boy, BK.
08:33You ever call your dad your boy?
08:36No.
08:37Never did.
08:38There's a...
08:39I feel like this is actually turning into, more than anything, these are takes that show
08:46that, like, hey, listen, we find plenty of black or white dudes annoying, too, okay?
08:50Yeah, yeah.
08:51Stop trying to call me a racist every time I think Shadur Sanders is annoying.
08:54Right.
08:55There's plenty of white guys that are super, super annoying.
08:58Yes.
08:58Including J.J.
08:59McCarthy, the starting quarterback for the...
09:01By designation and by name, the starting quarterback for the Vikings.
09:06Yeah, yeah.
09:07And Brian Kelly's kid.
09:08A team that's slightly better than the Browns.
09:09Brian Kelly's kid, Kenzel.
09:11Kenzel Kelly.
09:12That does not beat Perk, though, right?
09:14I mean, obviously...
09:14What are you doing?
09:15Call her!
09:16I just want to...
09:16I just want to replay it again more than anything.
09:19Free my boy!
09:20Free my boy!
09:21All right, here we go.
09:22Back to Shadur.
09:24Here was Ocho Cinco and Shannon Sharp on the night.
09:28Bitter mad at Kevin Stefanski.
09:30Yeah.
09:30And these guys have had one of my favorite bad takes of all time, which I actually...
09:35I actually loved the take because Ocho Cinco pulled back at the last moment.
09:40Desmond Watson.
09:41Yeah, that was one of my favorite.
09:43I love...
09:43I had no ill will towards them for that bad take.
09:46It was mostly Shannon Sharp with a horrible take, but it was kind of comical.
09:49Yeah, that one's going to be a final four.
09:51I have an affection for these guys when they have bad takes.
09:54I really do.
09:54So, let's hear it.
09:56Okay.
09:56He's mad at...
09:57They're mad at Stefanski for not giving Shadur a game ball on Sunday.
10:00So, hold on.
10:01Yeah.
10:01A guy making his first start.
10:02Yeah.
10:03A guy that you didn't really want to start.
10:04A guy that you didn't even want in your organization.
10:06Right, right.
10:07And that's all he get.
10:08Great job.
10:09He don't get no game ball?
10:11Nah, he don't get no game ball, huh?
10:12That wasn't his pick.
10:13That's not what they want.
10:14They don't want him to succeed?
10:15You know that.
10:16I know no disrespect.
10:17The owner told you...
10:18The owner told you...
10:19Himself.
10:20Even the head coach.
10:21The head coach guy.
10:22The head coach's guy is Dylan Gabriel.
10:24We all understand that.
10:27You know what?
10:28I don't want to listen to it again, but just in case I missed it.
10:30Did at any point either of those guys say that Shadur Sanders was the most powerful black
10:35man in America since 2009?
10:36I didn't hear them say that.
10:38Okay.
10:38Yeah.
10:38Did they at any point say he's the most powerful person in sports right now?
10:45I didn't...
10:45Ben, did you hear?
10:46I didn't hear them say that.
10:48No, you didn't hear it.
10:49Okay, so no, they do not win.
10:50They do not win.
10:51Can he do it?
10:52Call her!
10:54Oh, and a kick out!
10:55That's an easy one.
10:56Unbelievable.
10:57It makes it much easier when whatever take it is lives in this Shadur ecosystem there.
11:02Yeah.
11:03All right.
11:03A few more here as Kendrick Perkins continues to rip ass through all these challengers.
11:09Here is Ethan Burke, a defensive end.
11:12I mean, Perkins is going to squash this.
11:15Ethan Burke is a defensive end for the University of Texas.
11:18It was brought up in his press conference this week that he was asked about Texas being
11:23an underdog, a betting underdog, to the Aggies on Friday night.
11:27I think most of the sportsbooks have you all as underdogs in this game.
11:32Do you guys feel like the underdogs?
11:34No, I think we know what we're capable of, and, you know, who does the sportsbooks?
11:41Have they ever played college football?
11:42Probably not, so, yeah.
11:44Yeah, because clearly you've got to play college football to set a line on it.
11:48That's a bad take.
11:51That's like being like a, that's like saying, like, I don't know, does the president of Ford
11:55Motor Company ever actually, ever actually worked on the assembly line?
12:00Right.
12:00You know what he's doing?
12:01Right, right, right.
12:03No, that's a bad take.
12:04Yeah.
12:04It's a bad take, but, I mean, Perkins just, like, picking this kid up and blowing him down.
12:09I enjoyed it.
12:10It's funny, Jeff Van Gundy, you know, I heard him in an interview once talk about how once
12:14he entered the media and wasn't coaching any longer, he kind of reflected back on when
12:19he was a coach, and he wondered, why did I get so worked up about whether people picked
12:25for me or against me?
12:27Yeah.
12:27It's like, it's really weird that I got that worked up about it.
12:31I don't know, it's natural.
12:32It's such an easy piece of motivation.
12:34Yeah.
12:34It's so easy to put, because you're always searching for a way to put a chip on your shoulder.
12:39You're always finding a way to hate the opponent or anything and bring extra emotion to it.
12:42So I guess that's the answer, Jeff Van Gundy.
12:44It's just, it's easy motivation.
12:46It is.
12:47Yeah.
12:47Yeah, it is.
12:47Let me address a text here, and we'll get to these last two cuts.
12:50Y'all hate Sanders, SMH.
12:52No, we don't.
12:53This is not us hating Shadur Sanders.
12:55This is...
12:56If you're being honest with yourself, even if you love Shadur Sanders, but you say that
13:00he's the most powerful person in sports right now, or the most powerful black man since
13:04Barack Obama, you're lying.
13:07You're lying to yourself.
13:08Right, right.
13:08Yeah.
13:09This has nothing to do with whether you love or hate Shadur Sanders.
13:12Yeah, man.
13:13Zero.
13:13Zero.
13:14Yeah.
13:15So check yourself, Texter.
13:17Stop being so stupid this early in the morning.
13:20Michael Taff is a safety for the University of Texas.
13:24So we got another Longhorn here.
13:25He did a press conference this week, and he was asked who would get his Heisman vote.
13:31If you had a Heisman vote, who would you vote?
13:33Arch Manning.
13:35What is that?
13:36I think, I don't know, you compare his numbers, I bet his numbers are probably up there.
13:42I think he's the most hated on person in all of college football, and he doesn't even care.
13:47He just cares about winning, and he cares about his teammates, and the things that he's done
13:53for this team, and the adversity that he's gone through.
13:56So I think if you look at the best player in college football, I think it's Arch.
14:00Okay.
14:01I mean, that's your criteria.
14:02He's gone through a lot of adversity, and people hate on him.
14:05Therefore, he's the Heisman winner.
14:07Do you have the stats in front of you at all?
14:09I've seen, I don't.
14:10I've seen, there have been, the ones I've seen lately, particularly because the game is coming up in two days.
14:15Yeah.
14:16Marcel Reed, who is a top Heisman candidate, like he's among the, he plays for an undefeated,
14:22you know, soon to be, maybe possibly SEC championship team.
14:26Marcel Reed's numbers for touchdowns and yards, and some things that Longhorns will cherry pick
14:32are very similar to Arch.
14:33But if you watch Marcel Reed play football this season, and you watch Arch Manning play football
14:39this season, week to week, it's no comparison to me who the better quarterback has been over
14:43the course of the season.
14:44And Arch Manning has struggled big time in a lot of games this year, and is not nearly
14:50the generational prospect that a lot of people were anointing him at the beginning of the
14:54season.
14:54He's got mechanical issues.
14:55He's got all kinds of stuff going on.
14:57They're not, they're, you know, they're going to be, you know, nine and three, probably,
15:01if I had to guess, at the end of the year.
15:03So, you know.
15:04But that was almost, it sounded like, really, I mean, he kind of did a flyby over the stats
15:09and then said the fact that he's much maligned makes him the best.
15:12Yeah, that's not it.
15:13It's really the most powerful white man in America since George W. Bush was elected.
15:19That's what we're doing with each guy.
15:22Let's do it.
15:23Let's lean into it, man.
15:25So they are, they're not, they're eight and three right now, the Longhorns are.
15:29They're eight and three.
15:29Yeah, it doesn't beat Perkins.
15:30Yeah.
15:30And it's going to be Perkins.
15:32That's a big thing.
15:32It's going to beat Perkins.
15:33Oh, and a kick out.
15:34They're going to be eight and four.
15:36All right, last one.
15:37This is a basketball take from Theo Pinson, who is, I don't know if he's still in the NBA.
15:41He's, he was played for North Carolina in college, been on and off of some NBA teams for a number
15:47of years.
15:48He, like many players, has a podcast.
15:51He, they got talking about Kyrie Irving to the Rockets.
15:56And this is the, the very first voice you're going to hear is Pinson's.
16:00It gets tough to keep track of because there's three or four guys just sitting here rapping
16:04back and forth.
16:04But Pinson is the most egregious offender in this thing of wanting to move foundational
16:09pieces to get Kyrie Irving on the Rockets.
16:12But if Kyrie goes to Houston, oh my God.
16:15Houston's going to have to give back one of her pieces though.
16:17Bye-bye, amen.
16:18Bye-bye, amen.
16:19If you could find a way to not get rid of, amen.
16:22Would you give up Sangoon?
16:24Would I give up Sangoon?
16:25Ain't no way.
16:26Ain't no way.
16:27For Kyrie coming off of ACL?
16:29No way?
16:30I got to think about it, D-Way.
16:31I got to think about it.
16:32I don't know if I can say no way that fast.
16:34I don't know if I say no way.
16:37Okay, so I agree.
16:38So they, it was like, amen, it was like no pushback whatsoever.
16:42At all.
16:43Yeah.
16:43Whatsoever.
16:44Yep.
16:44Even though they would later acknowledge that it's Kyrie at his age coming off of an ACL.
16:48Yeah.
16:49In Sangoon, it was like, no way in hell.
16:51No way in hell.
16:52Which, look, yeah, Sangoon's playing like an MVP candidate.
16:56Sure.
16:56But, yeah, I think from a Rocket standpoint, horrible.
17:00Horrible.
17:00Either.
17:00I wouldn't trade either one.
17:02And yet, I'm not totally sure if they meant both of them for Kyrie Irving.
17:07Oh, is that like we're adding in Sangoon to that?
17:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:10I don't, I couldn't get the sense, and I listened, there's like 30 seconds after that that just
17:14didn't make sense to play.
17:15We are, honestly, we're getting to a point with Take-A-Mania where I might, we might have
17:21to disqualify any potential Take-A-Mania candidates based on, like, if there's anything
17:26explicitly racial about the take.
17:29Yeah.
17:29I just, I just don't want to deal with it.
17:31I, like, this is my fun sports show.
17:33Yeah.
17:33I do this because I don't want to have to have a real job.
17:36Yeah.
17:37And, like, there's no way, there's no way for a lot of annoying things to seep in once
17:41there's anything explicitly racial about it.
17:43Now, implied racism, I'm all for it.
17:46Okay.
17:46But, uh, the, it's the explicit stuff that I really don't want to feel about.
17:50Okay, so two things here.
17:51One, Perk, Perk still beats that take, right?
17:54What are you doing?
17:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:56Okay, two, when you say, there's nothing racial about the Theo Pinson take on Kyrie Irving
18:02and I'm mad at Alton.
18:02No, I'm talking about Kyrie Irving.
18:04Yeah, no, I'm talking about the, I'm talking about the Kendrick Perkins take.
18:06The Shadour, yeah, okay, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha, okay.
18:09I'm just sitting here and I'm playing out the next five weeks in my head and I'm trying to
18:12figure out a time when that's going to be, uh, and, and, and mostly it's the hyper-reactionary
18:19tight news, anything racial at all, want to make a federal case about it, uh, that I
18:23don't feel like dealing with because it just, it steals my joy, damn it.
18:27Some of it's pretty funny though.
18:28Are you guys racist?
18:29It's funny for now.
18:31Are you guys racist against Arch Manning?
18:33Yeah.
