00:00Big news out of the Giants Thursday night, Joe Shane receiving a multi-year contract extension.
00:05You know, anyone who saw Joe Shane and John Harbaugh talk after the first round of the NFL
00:10draft a few weeks ago, when both were thrilled that the Giants got Arvel Reese and CeCe Maui Noah,
00:17you could just see John Harbaugh gushing about the job, but Joe Shane did. He said he thought
00:22he did a great job. He thought Joe Shane's scouts did a great job. You know, don't forget,
00:27Joe Shane was able to get a first round pick, number 10 overall, for disgruntled Dexter Lawrence.
00:33I think John Harbaugh was thrilled at that. So, you know, you could just see that this relationship
00:38was really budding and growing. And so Joe Shane gets a contract extension multi-years. He was going
00:45into the last year of a five-year contract, and it was really not tenable for a GM to go
00:50into the last
00:51year of his contract. Sometimes teams do that. Most often they do not because it's just not good
00:56for business to have a guy in his lame duck season. So the Giants rectified that. And look,
01:02clearly this has John Harbaugh's stamp of approval on it. When the Giants hired John Harbaugh, he really
01:08did not know Joe Shane at all, even though the two of them spent basically the past two decades in
01:14the
01:14NFL. They had not worked together. They really didn't know each other. And John Harbaugh was hired,
01:20and the relationship started growing and growing and growing, and it got really, really strong.
01:27You could just tell when the two were together. John Harbaugh unsolicited would give great praise
01:32to Joe Shane. And so now it is official. Joe Shane gets a contract extension. The Giants have
01:38had some rough years, some lean years. And let's leave with this, that John Harbaugh probably would not
01:45have come to the Giants if not for Jackson Dart. John Harbaugh was not going to go to a team
01:50without
01:50a quarterback he felt he could win with, having the Giants get Jackson Dart. Joe Shane boldly last
01:55year traded up into the first round of the NFL draft to get Jackson Dart. So Shane got Dart,
02:03and Dart helped Shane get Harbaugh. Wait a minute. I thought Joe Shane was supposed to get fired
02:09after the draft. I look on Twitter just now, and I just find out, per Mike Garofalo of NFL Network,
02:16that the Giants have actually signed him to a multi-year extension. So that tells me two things.
02:23That ownership, remember when he got the vote of confidence from ownership, when they said that he
02:28and Brian Dable were not a package deal. Brian Dable ended up getting canned. Joe Shane stained.
02:34That showed that ownership, believed that they liked the roster and felt like that wasn't a four-win
02:40roster. In comes John Harbaugh to save the franchise. People were questioning if John Harbaugh
02:47and Joe Shane were going to be able to work together. There were questions on if he was going to
02:52be out
02:52because they hired senior VP Donna Ponte to come in and help run things, and everyone was going to go
02:59through John Harbaugh. What that shows us that in this last couple of months, since John Harbaugh
03:05has been hired, that he and Joe Shane has been able to build chemistry, build a roster, and hopefully
03:12build a on-field product that Giants fans could get behind, get excited about, and they could sustain.
03:20We'll have more from the New York Post Sports.
