00:11Welcome to Mojo Plays, and before the city is almost completely leveled, we're going to fight through the hordes of
00:18zombies and other mutations to find all the hidden secrets, easter eggs, and making of details we can find in
00:24Resident Evil 3 Nemesis.
00:33Are you crazy? You could have barbecued both of us!
00:37Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:42videos.
00:45Biohazard 1.9
00:47It was Raccoon City's last chance, and my last chance. My last escape.
00:55Early on in development, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis wasn't originally planned to be part of the mainline Resident Evil timeline,
01:02and was instead planned to be an artsy, independent film-style spin-off called The Last Escape.
01:08However, despite much protest from series producer Shinji Mikami, Capcom believed sequels had better financial possibilities, and wanted to have
01:16a complete trilogy of games on the PS1.
01:18Shinji Mikami was extremely against this decision, believing the in-development sequel Resident Evil Code Veronica was the true third
01:26mainline entry in the series, as it did more to push the overall narrative of the series forward.
01:31However, after much pushback from the higher-ups, Mikami relinquished and Code Veronica was given a subtitle instead of a
01:38number to differentiate it.
01:39Although it canonically remains tied to the main storyline of the series.
01:43Tell me, why did Umbrella send your team in?
01:46We're here to rescue the civilians.
01:48Don't lie to me. Umbrella is the reason why this whole mess began.
01:54Before and After
02:08With only a year between the release of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, the developers had to
02:14release a brand new numbered entry in the series in an incredibly short amount of time.
02:19To accomplish this, they decided to revisit Raccoon City and give Jill her own solo adventure, further documenting the fallout
02:26of the Spencer Mansion incident, as well as the downfall of Raccoon City.
02:31Because of this, many environments were reused with slight alterations, and Jill would cross paths with characters and events in
02:37RE2.
02:38To accomplish this and tell a self-contained story, the devs made RE3 both a prequel and a sequel, with
02:44the first half of the game taking place before the events of RE2, and the second half continuing after the
02:50ending of RE2.
02:51This allowed newcomers to get a complete experience, while fans who had played through RE2 got to see new details
02:57and elements from another perspective.
03:07Repurposed Design
03:19Nemesis is arguably one of the most recognizable mutations in the entire Resident Evil series, but he originally wasn't designed
03:27to be the star of his own game.
03:29The design for Nemesis that has become synonymous with the series was originally a rejected design for Mr. X in
03:35Resident Evil 2.
03:36Mr. X went through numerous design possibilities, including more exposed muscles, tendrils, and grotesque features, before finally settling on the
03:44trench-coated menace that stalks players through the RPD.
03:47When it came time for the sequel, designers went back to one of those rejected ideas and fleshed out their
03:53design, literally, and created a much more dangerous and advanced version of Mr. X, whose sole purpose was to hunt
03:59down and kill the remaining Starz members.
04:09SNL Cameo
04:10We've got to get out of here.
04:12What? What do you think you're talking about? I just lost my daughter out there. How dare you tell me
04:19to go back outside?
04:20Video games in the 90s weren't known for getting big-name actors to do voice work on their games, and
04:25oftentimes, even when someone semi-famous did do VO work on a game, you likely didn't even realize it, and
04:31it wasn't heavily advertised.
04:33Tony Rosada, most well-known for working on SNL around the same time as Eddie Murphy, among others, provided the
04:40voice for the unfortunate and terrified survivor, Dario, that Jill meets early on in RE3.
04:46However, this isn't the only character Tony brought to life. Tony also lent his voice to Nemesis and the iconic
04:52STARS line heard throughout the game.
04:56Brad?
04:58STARS
04:59A NEW LEVEL OF INTERACTIVITY
05:10Resident Evil 3 Nemesis doesn't get the credit it deserves for pushing the classic RE formula forward.
05:15Not only did it give players the option to choose their path forward, more on that in a bit, but
05:20it also introduced environmental hazards that could be used against enemies.
05:24Scattered around the many environments would be shootable items which could be targeted separately from regular enemies, and either deal
05:30damage or kill them immediately.
05:32Examples include the staple red barrels, but also electrical boxes, wall charges, steam valves, and even lanterns that can cover
05:40enemies in flames.
05:41These basic shootables would lay the groundwork for even more interactivity in future entries.
05:57Intro Screens
05:58It all began as an ordinary day in September. An ordinary day in Raccoon City.
06:04Along with various other cut content, early prototypes of Resident Evil 3 Nemesis included intro screens detailing the events leading
06:11up to the opening of the game.
06:13These include the remaining STARS members returning to Raccoon City, arguing with Chief Irons about the events at Spencer Mansion,
06:19and finally Jill becoming disillusioned walking the streets of Raccoon City as the town slowly succumbs to chaos around her.
06:26However, the strangest element of these cut intro screens is the inclusion of the iconic scene from Shawshank Redemption of
06:33Andy Dufresne and Ellis Redding talking on the bleachers.
06:36These static intro scenes were cut from the final game, but can still be found in the game's code, implying
06:42they were cut late into development.
06:44It was Raccoon City's last chance, and my last chance. My last escape.
06:52Iconic Colors
06:53In the Japanese version of Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, players will notice star markings next to their save file.
07:00These stars indicate what players have unlocked so far in their playthrough, such as the first star being tied to
07:05unlocking Mercenaries mode,
07:06the next four stars, which special weapons have been acquired, and the final five stars indicating the number of secret
07:12costumes the player has.
07:14These stars also serve another purpose, as if players check their save data icon on the PS2, the icon will
07:21change colors depending on how many stars the player has unlocked.
07:24For all ten stars, the Nemesis icon will turn a gold color.
07:28This is how we showed off our gaming skills before achievements and trophies.
07:32Developer credit
07:36You're saved.
07:38Down here!
07:41Whereas Resident Evil 2 hid nods to other Capcom titles, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis makes these easter eggs a bit
07:47more personal.
07:48One developer hid references to his name in numerous places throughout the game.
07:52The television that plays ads for Umbrella is a Kurahashi brand, and players can find numerous boxes and crates with
07:58Kurahashi printed on them as well,
08:00which are all nods to Kurahashi Yuki, a background programmer.
08:04Other devs got a bit more creative hiding their names in the environments.
08:08Players have likely seen the number 510 scattered throughout the game, which in Japanese is pronounced Gotu, which is referring
08:15to Gotu Junko, another background artist.
08:17Finally, another background artist gave herself a number of credits under the adverts for HM, Amano Miho, the background creator
08:26chief.
08:26The background artists of this game were determined to be immortalized in the game this time around.
08:31You're saying that they deliberately sent in a military unit to be butchered by their creations?
08:37Back in time.
08:38Given players can once again explore the RPD, naturally the set voted from Back to the Future 3 returns on
08:44the wall of the stars office,
08:45but this isn't the only major callback to the iconic time-traveling trilogy.
08:50Just outside the gas station, players can spot what is very clearly the DeLorean,
08:55which was made famous in the Back to the Future franchise as Doc Brown specifically designed his time machine around
09:00the vehicle.
09:01It's almost hard to spot with a large American flag draped over it, but upon closer inspection, the car is
09:07immediately recognizable.
09:08A dirty joke.
09:10Cheeky references, nods, and easter eggs aren't the only things the developers of Resident Evil 3 Nemesis snuck into the
09:16game.
09:16When players replace the future compass in downtown Raccoon City,
09:20they'll notice an engraving that is barely legible just beneath the section for the compass.
09:25The engraving is unreadable until you flip the text over,
09:28and rather than some kind of insightful clue or new mystery to uncover within the game,
09:33we'll find that it reads,
09:36Although sound advice, its inclusion is just weird,
09:40as is the fact the text was even translated for the Western release,
09:44The Passage of Time.
09:57One detail that is often overlooked when simply trying to escape the city
10:01is the clever inclusion of time passing during the game.
10:04Considering RE3 takes place both before and after the events of RE2,
10:09this clever usage of day-night cycles alludes to the passage of time during the events of the game.
10:14For example, when Jill first enters the RPD,
10:18it is the afternoon, and when she leaves, it's clearly later in the day.
10:22Another interesting detail is the clock on the wall when you reach the cable car,
10:26which reads 10.30pm.
10:28And a short time later, when you arrive at the clock tower,
10:30it reads 11pm, with Jill's battle with Nemesis taking place an hour later at midnight.
10:36And finally, after Jill wakes up,
10:39the rest of the game takes place after the events of Resident Evil 2.
10:42It's a shame so much work went into details most players didn't even notice.
10:46I'm sorry, Jill, but there's something I gotta take care of.
10:49I promise I'll meet up with you later.
10:51But don't worry.
10:54Canonical Questions.
10:55Brad, hang in there.
10:57Why isn't someone doing something about this?
11:00I didn't know you were still alive, Jill.
11:02The police aren't trained for this kind of situation.
11:05Although the developers did an admirable job fitting Resident Evil 3 Nemesis into the timeline of Resident Evil 2,
11:11despite not initially being planned that way,
11:14that doesn't mean it wasn't without issue.
11:16These include how could Brad Vickers be roaming the grounds as a zombie
11:20after being impaled by Nemesis at the start of the game.
11:23The simplest explanation is that being killed by Nemesis resurrected him as a zombie,
11:27but no concrete answer is ever given in either game.
11:30The RPD itself adds another wrinkle.
11:33When Jill arrives, most of the doorways and halls are boarded up,
11:37but are open when Leon and Claire arrive.
11:39Jill can also find a mortally wounded Marvin lying motionless,
11:43but he later returns still on the brink of death to welcome Leon.
11:46Obviously, mortally wounded doesn't mean dead,
11:49but it is curious how he was able to get up and move around with his wounds.
11:53Oh, you must be the new guy, Leon.
11:59Sorry, but it looks like your party has been cancelled.
12:05Costume crossover.
12:06Did you just say you belong to Umbrella's army?
12:11Yeah, we came all the way out here to save you civilians.
12:15A mere couple of months before the release of Resident Evil 3 Nemesis,
12:18Capcom unleashed a new breed of survival horror for its fans with Dino Crisis.
12:24Both games ended up being massive hits for Capcom,
12:26and since Dino Crisis was released first,
12:29the devs included a nod to their prehistoric survival horror cousin in RE3.
12:34Along with each game releasing with a demo of each other included in each game,
12:38there are numerous Dino Crisis posters in different locations like the hospital in RE3.
12:43However, the most direct reference to Dino Crisis in RE3
12:46is the unlockable costume for Jill,
12:48which is Regina's black jumpsuit,
12:51along with a red wig to complete the ensemble.
12:53Jill! Get out of the cable car now!
12:56Michael, wait, don't!
12:58Get out of here! Hurry!
13:00Tyrant Terror.
13:11There are so many easter eggs tying RE2 and RE3
13:15that were likely overlooked during your first playthrough,
13:18with some hidden so well you didn't even notice them at all.
13:22One such instance is from a cutscene in RE2
13:25in which Mr. X is dropped into Raccoon City.
13:27On board the helicopter Mr. X has dropped from,
13:30there are five more containers containing more Tyrants from Umbrella.
13:34Many players likely didn't give this a second thought,
13:36but the devs at Capcom certainly didn't forget.
13:39Just before the final encounter with Nemesis,
13:41players can find the remains of the other five Tyrants
13:44in various stages of mutation,
13:46having been killed during different encounters with the mercenaries.
13:53You want stars? I'll give you stars.
13:58Stealthy.
13:58While almost everything within Raccoon City is out to kill you,
14:02not every encounter needs to end with spent magazines and empty bullet casings.
14:07Specific enemies like the dogs won't attack you
14:09unless they hear your footsteps coming.
14:11Therefore, if you rapidly tap the X button or the direction button
14:15rather than holding it,
14:16Jill will scoot along the floor without taking any steps.
14:19allowing you to freely pass the dogs without actually having to fight them.
14:23It can take some practice to get the movements just right
14:26and make sure not to bump into them or else nothing will save you.
14:30Puzzle Redesign
14:36Resident Evil 3 Nemesis introduced several new game mechanics,
14:40but the most surprising one was item and puzzle randomization.
14:44From one playthrough to the next,
14:46Next, items and puzzle solutions would be altered
14:48or items and even enemies would be placed in different locations.
14:52This was particularly evident when players opened the weapons locker in the star's office
14:56and could either receive the grenade launcher or the magnum.
14:59However, this randomization had a major drawback
15:02when it came to a specific sound-related puzzle later in the game.
15:06Due to the randomization,
15:08players with hearing loss were unable to solve the puzzle.
15:10This was later updated in re-releases of the game
15:14to only have one solution and is also revealed in the subtitles.
15:20Enhanced Ammo
15:21Item randomization wasn't the only new mechanic
15:24that would have an impact on future entries in the series.
15:27Resident Evil 3 Nemesis also introduced ammo crafting to the franchise,
15:32allowing players to decide which ammo they needed during their playthrough
15:35depending on which combination of gunpowder they used.
15:38However, there is an added effect that many players never realized.
15:42By creating the same ammo 8 times,
15:44the 9th batch will be Enhanced Ammo.
15:47This ammo is far more powerful
15:49and can even bring Nemesis to his knees after only a couple of shots.
15:53It can be tricky creating the same ammo type multiple times,
15:57but the reward is worth the effort.
15:59The Illusion of Choice
16:09Resident Evil 3 Nemesis also introduced
16:11choose-your-own-adventure-style choices
16:13during specific cutscenes
16:15that would lead to different outcomes
16:16depending on what the player chose to do.
16:18With little to no indication of which choice did what,
16:21the only way to see the outcome of every choice
16:24was to replay the game.
16:25However, most of these choices
16:27don't have any major impact on the story whatsoever.
16:30No matter your choice,
16:32you'll still meet Carlos
16:32and no matter what you choose,
16:34Tyrell will still be killed.
16:36Other instances have only minor
16:38or completely negligible alterations
16:40that have no impact on the overall story.
16:43While an interesting gimmick,
16:44Capcom would only really use this mechanic
16:46one more time in Resident Evil Code Veronica.
16:49I can't believe he had the guts to shoot me.
16:52That traitor!
16:54You mean Nikolai?
16:58Alternate Ending
16:59It's over, Carlos.
17:01What are you talking about?
17:02Don't you hear that?
17:03There's a second chopper
17:04and it's here to rescue you.
17:06But who is it?
17:07Who could possibly be looking for me?
17:09While the choices you make during your playthrough
17:12largely have no effect on the narrative
17:13of Resident Evil 3 Nemesis,
17:15there is one that can directly affect
17:17which ending you get,
17:19and the game gives no indication
17:20it will have any effect.
17:22The final optional cutscene
17:24near the end of the game
17:25gives the player the option
17:26to either jump off the bridge
17:27or push Nemesis off the bridge.
17:30If you push Nemesis off the bridge,
17:32Carlos will pilot the helicopter
17:33out of Raccoon City
17:34before the missile hits.
17:36However, if you choose Jill
17:37to jump off the bridge,
17:39when you enter the control room,
17:40a familiar voice will call through the radio.
17:42And after defeating the final boss,
17:44Barry will be piloting the helicopter
17:46that rescues Carlos and Jill.
17:48No Jill flambé on Barry's watch.
17:51Thanks.
17:52You saved us.
17:53I couldn't let you die.
17:55Is it you?
17:56Are you ready to finish this?
17:59Epilogues.
17:59Another interesting reward
18:01for completing Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
18:03is the epilogues
18:04for the series' main characters.
18:06By beating the game
18:07a whopping eight times
18:09on the same save file,
18:10you can unlock epilogues
18:11chronicling what every mainline member
18:13of the series up to that point
18:15is doing after the destruction
18:16of Raccoon City.
18:17These include, obviously, Jill,
18:19but also Chris, Leon, Claire,
18:21Barry, and even Ada
18:23and Sherry Birkin.
18:24However, the most surprising one
18:26is the inclusion of an epilogue
18:28for Hunk.
18:28These are not only interesting bits of lore,
18:31but also help set up future entries
18:32in the Resident Evil universe
18:34for its many survivors.
18:36Mercenaries Mode
18:45Whereas in previous Resident Evil games,
18:47you can unlock rewards
18:48such as weapons or infinite ammo
18:50by simply completing the campaign,
18:52in RE3, you need to play
18:54and beat the Mercenaries Mode
18:55to unlock the best rewards.
18:56While there are still some basic rewards
18:58for completing RE3,
19:00special weapons such as the Gatling Gun,
19:02the Rocket Launcher,
19:02and the all-weapon infinite ammo
19:04can only be unlocked
19:05by playing this mode.
19:07And not just a couple times, either.
19:09To unlock the best rewards,
19:11you'll need to beat Mercenaries Mode
19:1220 to 30 times.
19:14There's also an optional objective
19:16to rescue hostages,
19:18which, if you manage to save them all,
19:19will unlock a special hidden cutscene.
19:22Well, that was impressive.
19:25You have earned your reward.
19:27Standing your ground.
19:35Every encounter with Nemesis
19:36is understandably an intense ordeal.
19:39However, given the size of Nemesis,
19:41there are ways to make each encounter easier
19:43as Nemesis will routinely get stuck
19:45on the geometry of the area,
19:46or can even run out of ammo
19:48in his deadly arsenal
19:49if you're able to last long enough.
19:51Most players will likely turn tail and run
19:53at the first sight of Nemesis,
19:55and understandably so,
19:56but there are advantages
19:58to standing your ground
19:59and taking Nemesis on.
20:00Throughout the seven encounters
20:02with Nemesis,
20:03if you manage to incapacitate the brute,
20:05Nemesis will drop specialized equipment
20:07such as handgun or shotgun parts,
20:09and even an assault rifle
20:10or infinite ammo
20:11if you're on your second playthrough
20:13in your final encounter.
20:14These can be some of the most challenging battles
20:16in the game,
20:17but the rewards are more than worth the effort.
20:26The Celebrity Wall
20:27We already covered the strange inclusion
20:29of the set photo of Back to the Future 3
20:32in the Star's office in Resident Evil 2,
20:34and not only is it back in Resident Evil 3 Nemesis,
20:37it brought even more odd inclusions along with it.
20:40In the gas station is a wall of photos.
20:43These can be difficult to make out
20:44given this is a PS1 game,
20:46and they are all heavily pixelated,
20:48but many fans have managed to uncover the truth
20:50behind the pixels.
20:51On the wall are photos of Mel Gibson from Maverick,
20:54Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral,
20:57Winona Ryder in The Age of Innocence,
20:59Johnny Depp from Benny and June,
21:01and in the next room,
21:02a poster from California Dreams.
21:05Their presence could be nothing more
21:06than a background artist fan
21:07or placeholders that were never swapped out,
21:10but the inclusion of the Back to the Future 3 photo
21:12makes this feel deliberate.
21:14Poor Curry quality.
21:15The signage in Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
21:17has proven to be a goldmine for easter eggs
21:20and hidden credits or nods to other Capcom properties,
21:23but one of these signs includes a desperate plea
21:25from a disgruntled developer.
21:27In one of the alleyways,
21:28a sign remains untranslated from Japanese
21:30and reads,
21:31Please do something about Capcom's awful curry and rice.
21:35While this poor suffering employee
21:36has never been identified,
21:38we at least hope that Capcom has raised their standards
21:40on the mules for their employees
21:42in the years since RE3's release back in 1999.
21:44You do have to wonder just how bad it really was
21:48for this signage in the game to be necessary.
21:50Jill's Diary
21:51It's true that once the wheels of justice begin to turn,
21:54nothing can stop them.
21:56Nothing.
21:57Apparently keeping a diary was part of Star's standard training,
22:01as Jill also kept a log detailing the events of Spencer Mansion,
22:04Jill's plan to leave Raccoon City,
22:06and essentially sets up the events of Chris's story
22:09in Resident Evil Code Veronica.
22:10What makes getting Jill's diary so difficult
22:13is the means to unlock it.
22:14Not only do you need to collect every file
22:16within the game during your playthrough,
22:18but you also need to do it in the correct order.
22:21An order the game doesn't tell you,
22:23and due to this specific order,
22:25leads to quite a lot of backtracking through the game
22:27just to pick these files up in sequential order.
22:30It's arguably the most challenging task
22:32for the least reward in the game,
22:33but is still a fun Easter egg teasing the future of the series.
22:43What was your favorite moment in Resident Evil 3 Nemesis,
22:46and do you prefer the original or the remake?
