00:00You're with Homeland Security. Is that guy a terrorist or something?
00:04Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we'll be taking a look at 20 instances where other video games paid tribute
00:11to Resident Evil.
00:18Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays and ring
00:23the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:27Astro Bot
00:34The 2024 3D platformer phenomenon features a ton of different characters that helped PlayStation become the gaming powerhouse it is
00:42today.
00:43Among the more than 300 bots you can rescue are bots based on Leon, Claire, Jill, Chris, and in a
00:51post-launch update, Wesker.
00:53Each bot even has their own special items to unlock for secret interactions, and each interaction alludes to the typical
01:00items and puzzles you'd come across in Resident Evil.
01:03Knock over a statue to make Leon panic.
01:05Help Claire figure out which key can open a locked door.
01:08Teach Chris how to use a typewriter.
01:10Or, and this is the best one, try to force Jill to confront some sinister-looking dogs.
01:17Honestly, any fan of Resident Evil would be gushing over these references.
01:21I know I definitely did.
01:29Cross Code
01:33If you haven't played Cross Code before, it is absolutely worth checking out for yourself.
01:38This top-down action RPG puts you in the role of Leia, a player character sent into a fictional MMORPG
01:45to discover her origins and uncover some shady conspiracies.
01:49At one point in her journey, Leia may come across an NPC that drops a pretty explicit, yet hilarious reference
01:55to Resident Evil.
01:56While exploring Bazin's Keep Corner Mall, you can find a lady blocking one of the stores.
02:01Talk to her, and she will tell you, quote,
02:04I'm sorry, dear customer, but Umbrella Inc. is currently experiencing a... sort of outbreak.
02:10In order to avoid any residents from getting in from having a bad time, we have closed off access to
02:16the third floor.
02:17End quote.
02:18Totally not ominous.
02:20At all.
02:28Dead Rising.
02:29That's against regulations.
02:31Yeah, well, I don't think they had zombie-infested malls in mind when they wrote those regulations, kid.
02:36It only makes sense that other Capcom games would reference other Capcom games, and we will see some of that
02:43throughout this list.
02:44As for Dead Rising, you don't have to look hard for this reference, as it can be found fairly early
02:50in the game.
02:51Many of the stores are pretty generic for the most part, and serve as nothing more than places to scavenge
02:56for health items and additional weapons.
02:58But there is one food chain that pays tribute to Resident Evil's leading lady.
03:03Anyone want to grab a bite at Jill's Sandwiches?
03:05They're a master of unlocking great flavors.
03:08Digimon World.
03:16Digimon.
03:17What in the world is a franchise like Digimon doing referencing an intense horror game like Resident Evil?
03:23Well, it's subtle enough to where most kids probably didn't spot this at the time.
03:27Now that most of us are grown up and older, maybe it'll be more obvious.
03:32The reference can be found in Greylord's Manor, but the reference isn't an item or a piece of the map
03:37that references Resident Evil.
03:39No, it's the map itself.
03:41Yes, the entire map of Greylord's Manor has almost the exact same layout as Spencer Mansion from the 1996 original
03:49game.
03:50Like we said, this was something that likely flew over most of our heads back in the day, but it
03:55all makes sense now.
04:05Hitman Absolution
04:11Some might say this is a bit of a reach.
04:14Others may choose to believe the connection here.
04:16No matter which way you see it, it's hard to say that this is just a coincidence.
04:20In the Death Factory mission, Agent 47 is given three targets to take out, but two of these
04:26targets have the same last names as two Resident Evil characters.
04:30Come on, you can't sit there and say Dr. Valentine and Dr. Ashford are NOT references to Jill
04:36and Alexia, especially when one of them is a bioengineer.
04:50Ion Fury already has a plethora of Easter eggs for players to discover that reference
04:56plenty of movies, TV shows, and other video games.
05:00Clearly, the developers at Void Point were big fans of Resident Evil, as they threw in
05:04a reference almost as subtle as Digimon Worlds.
05:07At some point, you might spot an advertisement for a strange restaurant called Cannibals
05:13with its own unsettling slogan, Itchy Tasty.
05:18Not sure if anybody would want to grab food from a place like that, but we can appreciate
05:22the callback to the OG Resident Evil.
05:25Guacamelee 2
05:29Now this one might be easy to miss if you aren't paying attention.
05:32In some corners of Guacamelee 2, you'll spot various decorations inspired by luchador wrestling,
05:38including posters advertising various matches between characters you may never encounter.
05:43Among these is a poster advertising a match between two Goliaths named El Nemesis and Pyramid
05:50Roja.
05:51If it isn't obvious enough, well, something tells us this will be a one-sided fight.
05:56There is no escape from El Nemesis.
05:59Borderlands
05:59While we're on the subject of the seemingly unstoppable tyrant, Borderlands hides a fairly
06:05on-the-nose reference to Nemesis.
06:07As you explore the wastelands of Pandora, you may come across legendary weapons with unique
06:12properties that can make them deadly.
06:14One of these weapons is called the Hyperion Nemesis, which features a flavor text that reads,
06:20There is no escape.
06:22Much like the Resident Evil monster we've come to love, the Nemesis pistol is known to be one
06:26of the best weapons in Borderlands, with its high shock damage and ability to fire several
06:31bullets within a single pull of the trigger.
06:34Honestly, it'd be a boon for any Vault Hunter to have in their arsenal.
06:44This survival horror game really wears its inspirations on its sleeves.
06:49As you play through Elisa, you may pick up on several cues pulled from Silent Hill, as
06:54well as the subject of today's video, Resident Evil.
06:58There is even one famous line pulled from Resident Evil that is used in one particular moment.
07:03We won't spoil too much of the plot, but as expected, we were bound to hear the sandwich
07:08line at some point.
07:10I was almost a sandwich.
07:15Overwatch
07:15One of the coolest aspects of Overwatch are all of the brief interactions the characters
07:20can have before the match starts.
07:22Of course, leave it up to D.Va to be the one to make all of the video game references.
07:27Should two teammates choose to control D.Va and Sombra, there is a chance that they'll get
07:32to hear their brief interaction.
07:34D.Va will ask Sombra about being the master of unlocking, to which Sombra will admit that
07:39she has no idea what the gamer girl is even talking about.
07:43Those of us who played the 1996 game know all too well, though.
07:46Ooh, I can't stand you hackers!
07:49You give those of us with skill a bad name!
07:52You know that isn't the kind of hacking I do, right?
07:55Beautiful Joe!
07:56Double Trouble.
07:57For this easter egg, you cannot spot this with your eyes, but with your ears instead.
08:02In Beautiful Joe!
08:03Double Trouble, there is a special song referencing Resident Evil 2 in the second level of the game.
08:09Pay close attention to the music playing in the background.
08:19Does it sound familiar?
08:21If not, this music is the same piece used when exploring the lobby of RPD in Resident Evil 2.
08:28Sure, this was likely used just to cut down on work, but it serves as a nice little easter egg.
08:33Not only that, but a large chunk of horror world serves as a massive homage to the Resident Evil franchise
08:40as a whole.
08:40Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion
08:47Many of the locations in Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion are heavily inspired by various horror movies, shows, and games.
08:54You can almost say it's the video game equivalent to the 2011 film, The Cabin in the Woods.
08:59But for the few that reached floor 800, there was a special level for Resident Evil fans.
09:05Upon entering, any fan will immediately recognize the location.
09:08Well, almost.
09:10The whole place feels eerily similar to Spencer Mansion, and you may even find a note that simply reads,
09:16What a Mansion!
09:18Sadly, don't expect to run into Wesker.
09:20Instead, you will have to run away from a decrepit but deadly old man.
09:24Even more upsetting, this series of floors was removed from the 2017 HD re-release.
09:30What the hell, man.
09:31Azure Striker Gunvolt
09:38If you've never played this series from indie developer Inti Creates, you are indeed missing out.
09:45A truly exceptional game from a truly exceptional studio, but we can gush over Inti Creates another time.
09:51Azure Striker Gunvolt briefly mentions Capcom's legendary survival horror games during one particular moment.
09:57Xeno and Gunvolt will have a moment where they talk about an old horror game they really enjoyed.
10:02Said horror game being about zombies created in a lab.
10:07Sounds an awful lot like something Umbrella Corps did, doesn't it?
10:12Death Road to Canada
10:18In Death Road to Canada, you'll meet all sorts of different characters that will create diverse playstyles for you.
10:25One such character is a special agent on a special mission and is equipped with a special sort of weapon,
10:32as the game puts it.
10:33What? No, that's not hunk, you goofs. That's hunk.
10:37This little guy is one of the rarest characters you'll ever meet on your adventure to Canada, and he's one
10:43of the best as he boasts remarkable shooting skills.
10:46And don't worry, he is totally not going to betray you at any point in the game. You got nothing
10:51to worry about. Pinky promise even.
11:00Dead Pixels
11:01Never played or heard of this game before? Well, Dead Pixels is a fun little side-scroller shooter with character
11:11designs akin to Mega Man.
11:12And it's cheap, so you ought to grab it if you have a couple of bucks to spare.
11:16Back to the topic at hand, Dead Pixels quickly shows some of its inspirations from various Capcom IPs, and Resident
11:23Evil is among the major contributors.
11:25Much like Borderlands, Dead Pixels features weapons manufactured by various fictional companies, one of those companies being simply known as
11:33Redfields.
11:34Sounds like Chris and Claire started a family business at some point.
11:47Master Detective Archives, Rain Code
11:50I think you're really cool for not giving up on either dream.
11:53Those who have played the Danganronpa series should expect a few nods to famous games in Kazutaka Kodaka's other works.
12:01After all, Kodaka himself grew up with video games starting with the NES and all throughout the rest of his
12:07life.
12:07So, Master Detective Archives was going to have a reference to some video game franchises.
12:12In this case, Resident Evil gets a slightly subtle shoutout in Chapter 5.
12:17This chapter's mystery takes place in a laboratory that is crawling with zombies.
12:21As they are about to explore, Shinigami tells Yuma that he ought to look out for some green and red
12:27herbs.
12:28Any idea what good would come from that stuff?
12:30One pull of the trigger and you're dead.
12:33Looks like I've got you cornered, Yuma.
12:37Dragon's Dogma
12:43Oh! Another Capcom game paying a tribute to another Capcom game.
12:48And it won't be the last. Not yet anyways.
12:50This one, however, can be found in a manner similar to Beautiful Joe.
12:54Look with your ears, not your eyes.
12:57Bitter Black Isle has a safe area with a very special piece of music that every Resident Evil fan ought
13:02to recognize.
13:03While Beautiful Joe Double Trouble paid respects to RE2, Dragon's Dogma paid respects to the legendary Resident Evil 4 by
13:11placing its safe room music within Bitter Black Isle's own safe room.
13:20Bitter Black Isle
13:21Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
13:31Not only was this a crossover no one had wanted or anticipated, it featured an insanely strange piece of lore
13:38that is now a part of both Professor Layton and Ace Attorney.
13:42In this game, both the Professor and the Lawyer team up to fight a maniacal man named the Storyteller.
13:49Sometime within the last few chapters of the game, it is revealed that the Storyteller is actually the president of
13:55a shady pharmaceutical company called Labralum Inc.
13:59Or Labralum Inc., however you want to pronounce it.
14:03But what an interesting acronym to show that Umbrella is absolutely not trying to screw up yet another part of
14:09the world.
14:17Bayonetta
14:18All I see when I look at you, the real is the truth.
14:24Now, this easter egg is for the die-hard nerds out there who will play almost anything and everything with
14:29Capcom's name printed on it, and Hideki Kamiya's name.
14:32At one point in Bayonetta, Luka will mention a few of the women he has slept with in the past.
14:38These four women are Trish, Sylvia, Ami, and Claire.
14:44Not only is this a sneaky reference for Resident Evil 2, it is also a sneaky reference to Devil May
14:50Cry, Beautiful Joe, and oddly enough, Okami.
14:55All games that Hideki Kamiya himself worked on before he left Capcom to start up Platinum Games.
15:01Oh, you don't want to piss her off, let me tell you. Hell hath no fury!
15:06Street Fighter VI
15:08Hold up, hold up.
15:14Ugh.
15:17With this being the first Street Fighter to utilize the engine that Resident Evil would help pioneer, it is only
15:23fitting for Street Fighter VI to respect its younger Capcom sibling in some fashion.
15:28What better way to do so than with a cheeky inside joke?
15:33The World Tour mode allows players to bond with their favorite characters, learn their moves, and even give them gifts
15:39for fun conversations.
15:41For Luke, you can gift him a horror game that is known as Red Elevator 8, a super subtle nod
15:48to Resident Evil 8.
15:50Luke will tell you how much of a coward he is when it comes to scary games, but eventually, you
15:56will convince him that Red Elevator 8 is much more action focused than jumpscare focused.
16:01Gee, sounds an awful lot like one particular franchise we know, doesn't it?
16:15Were you able to spot any of these easter eggs yourself before seeing this video?
16:20Which one was your favorite?
