RJ and Bobby debated the Mavs' decision to move on from Jason Kidd, weighing the "justice" of cleaning house after the Luka trade against the loss of a coach who just led them to the Finals. They analyzed Masai Ujiri’s authority to reset the culture and if the Mavs should find an experienced veteran or try another internal promotion.

00:00Jason kid is done. This is the story from Tim McMahon over at ESPN. This news breaking last night right
00:06as I was about ready to send my email and I was about to send on it with no Jason
00:10kid stuff in there. I was like, oh, look at that. I was actually alerted by a noted Thunder fan
00:16marketing consultant Cody Cole, who is like, all right, well, how many more people are left? I was like, what
00:23is he talking about? I like it was like, oh, Jason kid is done a mutual parting of ways.
00:28This is what Tim McMahon writes. Kid has four years and more than 40 million remaining on his contract. Sources
00:33told ESPN, but Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont, who extended kids contract during Dallas's NBA finals run in 2024 and again
00:40before last season, after they declined the Knicks request to interview him, gave new president Masai Ujiri full authorization to
00:47determine the coach's future with the franchise. Quote, as we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this
00:53is the right moment for a new direction for our team.
00:55We have high expectations for this franchise and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention.
01:03We will conduct a thorough disciplined search for our next head coach and continue to evaluate our entire basketball operations
01:10staff to ensure we compete at the standard Mavs fans expect and deserve.
01:14He, uh, Tim McMahon goes on to write that the Mavs also let go of several members of the basketball
01:19operations department on Tuesday, including assistant general manager, Matt Riccardi, who had been working with Michael Finley kind of in
01:26the interim.
01:26Uh, we'd read a story on him at one point.
01:29He grew up a Mavs fan, big Dallas Mavericks fan, him working with Finley was funny.
01:34Cause he had like show, shared this photo with the Dallas morning news of him going to like a fan
01:38fest event and like getting Finley's autograph and stuff as a kid.
01:41And so, uh, that's a little, a little bit of a bummer for Matt Riccardi.
01:45I'm sure serving alongside Michael Finley.
01:47It says Finley's future with the franchise has yet to be determined.
01:50So he was not part of this purge yet.
01:52Anyway, uh, sources said standing, you know, I would think so, but, and, and he was not part of the
02:00Luca push.
02:01I know that, uh, sources said kid had expressed a desire to be promoted to president of basketball operations after
02:07general manager, Nico Harrison was fired in November.
02:09I too, I think all of us have a desire to be promoted.
02:12I look, I, if I was kid at the moment that the promotion was denied, he, he was, he probably
02:17knew he knew it.
02:18Well, he knew he was going to leave.
02:19He should have left anyway.
02:20I think he knew he was going to be done.
02:22I think he knew whoever came in was going to get their own guy and probably, yeah, probably, probably reset
02:27on that.
02:28Yeah.
02:28And that's like, but also like from his perspective, you know, if you get passed over for promotion that you
02:35want, that you think you might deserve, and most people think they deserve it anyway, you're probably not going to
02:40stay at whatever company it is.
02:42If you have options.
02:43Now we don't have any, now he has options because he has F you money and he could deal with
02:47just not working, right?
02:49He could deal with doing whatever he wants.
02:51Yeah.
02:52I don't, I don't love when, when, when people lose their jobs.
02:54I think it sucks.
02:55Um, I'm not, I'm not crying over this one because of the Lucas situation.
03:03Um, I don't think kids, a bad head coach.
03:06I think he's a fine head coach.
03:08Um, I got to see who I would like to bring in next.
03:13I don't know.
03:14Is this Nick nurse?
03:15Come on down.
03:15Is this Sean?
03:16Well, I'm going to talk about, I'm going to, I'm putting together something.
03:19I do not want a rookie head coach.
03:21I am, I am not a rookie head coach guy.
03:24Sorry, Shadi.
03:25Uh, we are Dallas Fort Worth.
03:27Save the rookie head coaches for Sacramento.
03:29You know, let them, let them break them in.
03:32You know, I am not a rookie head coach guy.
03:34Do, do not bring that rookie head coach here around here.
03:37Um, just cause look at the track records we had.
03:40Look at the coach we've had here.
03:43I mean, Avery was a rookie head coach, but, but you know, he was, I mean, he was literally a
03:48general.
03:49Like, yeah, I mean, he was, he was, he was groomed for the role.
03:52He was groomed.
03:53Um, but you, you, you're from Nelly to Rick.
03:55I mean, I'm out, I'm out.
03:56Right.
03:56But you know, like Jason kid handled the post Luca trade as poorly as you could have all
04:06all he had to do publicly, maybe he, he coached his ass off publicly at the close of the 2425.
04:13So I will give him credit for that.
04:14He had them playing hard.
04:15All he had to do was say, look, I, uh, I was on board with this, you know, and then,
04:22and then, and then, and gradually say it was the wrong thing to do.
04:26I think at the time, nobody knew, and I'm not giving kid a pass at all.
04:29Kid needed to go.
04:31This is justice today.
04:32Anybody involved with the trade really did need to go.
04:35And they pretty much, and they pretty much house at this point.
04:39Um, but man, it's, I think that Nico Harrison had such a strong grip on Patrick Dumont at
04:47the time that when it first happened, there were probably a lot of people who just felt
04:50like, well, I can't say anything right now because this dude is completely in control.
04:54And then after it kind of started transitioning a little bit, then you started seeing a little
04:57bit more confidence to, to push back against some of the stuff, uh, immediate reaction
05:02occurred on the set of inside the NBA.
05:04And then post game, they were able to expand their thoughts a little bit.
05:07This is the inside the NBA crew last night, reacting to the Jason kid news.
05:11Uh, well, I'm kind of surprised, but I see $40 million.
05:15I want to go that direction.
05:16Um, Jason is a heck of a coach.
05:19Um, I think Messiah, you know how much respect we have for him.
05:23I think he's just amazing, but I think he, he probably got somebody in mind.
05:28You don't make this, you don't fire Jason kid unless you have somebody you want in
05:34mind.
05:35And, uh, I have great respect for Jason and Messiah, but you know what, when you get
05:39a new job, you get to hire the people you want to hire.
05:42Uh, but Jason, I don't think there's any jobs.
05:46He probably out until next year.
05:48He did a heck of a job down in Dallas, but I understand Messiah.
05:52He wants to get his own people around him and good luck to them because they got that
05:56young boy flag.
05:57Who's the real deal.
05:58Kyrie comes back next year and that's a good job.
06:01Yeah, I was going to say, uh, whoever they pick, hopefully the new coach could take them
06:05to that next level.
06:07Like Jason kid, uh, had a hell of a run in Dallas, but you know, Messiah is in charge
06:11now.
06:11So like Chuck said, he's probably going to bring him in and his own people.
06:15But we're not seeing Jason kid for that Orlando job.
06:17We talk about Dallas, uh, Jason kid, he created an element of culture of winning and expectation
06:24of winning.
06:26Uh, so he, he did his job.
06:28Uh, but obviously when they fired Nico, uh, Harrison, and then all of a sudden now you
06:35bring in Messiah, this is the last leg of that era when, you know, that era of this is
06:42the new maps coming in now.
06:43Well, what is a lot of different thoughts there, Jason kid in Orlando, I maybe don't hate that
06:53fit.
06:53It's really the only job that's left.
06:55Um, but Kenny Smith talking about the culture of winning that Jason kid, like Jason kid came
07:05in here and it was in the finals.
07:07Okay.
07:07But, but saying Jason came in here and established a culture of winning.
07:12Yeah.
07:12They had a culture of winning with Rick Jason kid has as many under 500 seasons.
07:18He coached five years here.
07:20Felt like much longer.
07:21He coached five years here.
07:23He has as many under 500 seasons as Rick Carlisle had in 13 years.
07:31And as Don Nelson had an eight Don Nelson had as many seasons below 500 as Jason kid did.
07:35And they were bad when John doing Don Nelson.
07:37I, that seems like undue credit.
07:40He ultimately finished with two winning seasons, three losing seasons.
07:43I, I, I wouldn't give kid credit for establishing culture.
07:47He's, I mean, I would say, I would say to that the last two, I don't really count.
07:52I mean, I do.
07:54They traded Luco, but okay, but he was part of it.
07:57And that's not the catalyst for trading Luke.
07:59That was the whole, whole culture.
08:00I look at this.
08:02He is, and, and let us know on the fan text, how you feel about the Sean put out a
08:06tweet
08:07last night, put out a poll saying, are you happy or mad about Jason kid's departure?
08:12Happy time for change, mad, dumb move, or undecided.
08:15What do you think the poll results are?
08:17And, and let us know on the fan text.
08:18Are you happy about this?
08:19Are you mad?
08:20Are you not sure how to feel?
08:21My, my answer to his poll question, I, I am a little undecided.
08:25I'm happy that I, cause I think that everybody within that, that had a hand in the trade needed
08:32to go.
08:32Yeah.
08:32I do think it's the wrong basketball move.
08:35So that's, that's, that's the complicating factor.
08:38And I think that we can, I could come in here this morning and I do, I feel conflicted about
08:42this because it is, we wanted our pound of flesh.
08:45We got it.
08:47We got it.
08:49Now what?
08:52You know what I mean?
08:52Like, this is like, yeah, you went to the boss's office, you cussed him out and he told
08:56you to go take a walk.
08:57No.
08:57And now what?
08:58Now what are you going to do?
08:59I don't think it's that though.
09:01Um, like, I don't think it's necessarily now what, look, he got, are you in a better
09:06position coaching wise today?
09:10Or let's just not say today, cause you don't have a coach.
09:12Let's whatever they have.
09:13Depending on who Masai Ujiri has in mind, very well could be.
09:15Well, okay.
09:16I mean, all right.
09:18Have there not been times when you've watched Jason kid coach that you have.
09:21I thought probably an equal number of times.
09:24He is one of the best coaches in the NBA and dear God, how does he have a job?
09:28He does some, there are some times where I am so impressed with Jason kid.
09:32He is one of the most fascinating studies to me as an NBA coach, because I think there
09:37are times that he has been a massive advantage for them.
09:40I agree.
09:41And I think there are times that he doesn't, there's times you're not paying attention.
09:43I think he's cost them at other various times.
09:46And I think there's times where he's like, not even watching the game.
09:49And then he comes up with a play.
09:52The sensitivity to the last couple months.
09:53It was in those clips at the opening with the, the bye, bye, bye drops or whatever.
09:57He got so defensive at the end.
10:00That one where he bit the reporter's head off and goes, I know what the F I'm doing.
10:03He does not like, that was somebody trying to pay him a compliment.
10:06And he broke, like he cut them off.
10:08He is, he is like a lot of, a lot of athletes don't want to hear it from people who
10:14are fans
10:15or media who never played the game at a high level.
10:17I get it.
10:19Like fact, fact.
10:23And people who play professionally know more about how to play the sport than we do.
10:28Fact.
10:31You can't even make the argument.
10:33Ooh, fan text here.
10:34Uh, two, one, four.
10:36He's the Mavs version of Jason Garrett.
10:41Uh, and what, and what?
10:43I don't understand that.
10:44I would assume because it's just, there are things that you like about him and some other
10:48things that you're like, what the hell are you doing?
10:50Okay.
10:50That's fair.
10:51And I mean, he, Jason Garrett had similar successes.
10:55He didn't get to a Super Bowl, but I mean, he was, he had, we're fine.
10:58He had similar runs of like, oh, the team's really good.
11:00Oh, they're bad.
11:01Oh, the culture's really beneficial.
11:03Oh, this is just, they're not.
11:04I think at the end, I think a lot of us were like, all right, it's run its course with
11:07Jason.
11:10And, you know, I think we all thought we'll get a, we'll get a good coach with Jason
11:15kid.
11:15It's like, all right, we, we, we got rid of him.
11:18He's gone.
11:19We're happy about that for a different reason.
11:22My issue with this, my, my issue with the, with, with, with this move.
11:26And again, I know it's not a firing, but it also is like, if they really wanted him there,
11:32he didn't want to mutually agree he was getting fired.
11:34Yeah.
11:36Um, I do have a problem when it's, when you're making a move that is not a, for a basketball
11:45reason, you know, like I think, I mean, he, if he was part of the idea of pushing Luke
11:51out, that's a basketball reason.
11:52And, and, and if you want to talk about some of the, you're not firing him for his coaching.
11:56Well, you had some mismanagement and new guys want their guys.
12:00I get it.
12:00I get that.
12:01That, that makes more sense.
12:02Henry, Henry Abbott, Henry Abbott from true hoop wrote this last night.
12:06I covered Jason kid when he played for the nets.
12:08I know one of his childhood friends.
12:10I've been to his house, met his kids, then wife and Pilates instructor.
12:15And I have insight from many people who worked with him in his coaching years.
12:19This is a great firing.
12:20And I, when I saw that, I first saw that early on Senator, you are no Jack.
12:25And those are very Lloyd Benson.
12:27I laughed so hard at that.
12:29It's a funny lie.
12:29I was like, man, that did not go where I was expecting that to go.
12:32I do love Henry Abbott.
12:34Uh, some of the fan texts here, uh, three, two, one kids should have stayed one more
12:37year just to continue to develop flag, uh, four, six, nine happy.
12:41He either agreed with the Luca trade or wasn't respected enough to speak up about it.
12:45Overrated coach.
12:46Uh, one of our Spurs fans in Terrell says,
12:50overjoyed that kid is gone.
12:51Can't wait to get doc rivers in here.
12:53Ha ha ha ha.
12:54Boy, you would, you would have a cow.
12:57If this was a doc river's job, it's not, it's not going to be done.
13:00You, you, you don't know who it's going to be.
13:02It's not going to be done.
13:03It is a great day though.
13:04The reset that the cleansing has occurred.
13:07Justice has been served.
13:09Jason kid is out.
