00:00Would you like the latest Mavs mock or rank the job openings
00:04as we're trying to look for the Jason Kidd replacement?
00:08Latest odds.
00:10Latest odds.
00:11That's neither one of them.
00:13On the coaches or whatever.
00:15The coach is going to come first.
00:17That's what I'm talking about.
00:18I'm talking about the coaches.
00:18We're ranking the job openings.
00:20Yeah, let's do that one.
00:21Okay?
00:21We did the odds yesterday.
00:23Stay with us.
00:23Where's your coffee?
00:24I'm here.
00:24Where's the Yerga Chef?
00:25It's right here.
00:26No, it's not the Yerga Chef.
00:27It's actually the Sumatra.
00:28Why would you not get our own coffee?
00:30Well, because it's not on it.
00:32Yeah, it's not the Sean and RJ coffee.
00:33That's right.
00:34And he's a Bobby Bean, some fan.
00:36Just like the Sumatran Tigers, I'm solo.
00:39Well, we are live at Just Love Coffee in Arlington, 1300 South Bone.
00:44We need to sell a ton of Sean and RJ coffee bags
00:47because proceeds are going to go to the Jared Sandler Sandlot Children's Charity.
00:53Why did Ian Camfield's blend is up there, too?
00:55Should I be taking that off of the top so that people can't buy it?
00:58Yeah, and we also need a bigger display.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Yeah, that's very small.
01:01We need to talk to John when he comes in here.
01:04You know?
01:04We need to figure out is Sean and RJ just speckled throughout the entire place?
01:08It's in the corner.
01:10It's in the corner.
01:11Yeah.
01:11It needs to be up there with the other bags.
01:12Nobody puts RJ in the corner.
01:14That's right.
01:16Openings in the NBA.
01:17Okay.
01:17Us, Orlando, Portland, Chicago.
01:23That's the order?
01:25No.
01:25Or that's just the listings?
01:27We mentioned this, I think, the day you were out.
01:31I would still say I think Orlando might be a more attractive job.
01:36Why?
01:37That's the only one I would think of.
01:38Because you've got, like, Boncaro and a pretty, and I know a lot of people feel like Boncaro's still not
01:43gotten up to where he needs to be, but you've got a good young core and you've got more resources
01:49to build with it in the future than you do in Dallas.
01:52Obviously, flag is the best piece, but in terms of other things to put around what you've already got, I
01:58would say that Orlando would be a more attractive job if I was looking for an opening.
02:02What is that, Ralph?
02:03This is the breakfast platter, eggs, salzich, and a waffle.
02:10Show it on the fan cam.
02:11Let's see.
02:12Look at that.
02:13And a waffle, baby.
02:14What happened to the wombat?
02:16You know, I had it last time.
02:18I wanted to try this.
02:20The eggs were calling my name.
02:21Okay.
02:21Actually, the waffle was calling my name.
02:22That's really what it was.
02:23And you're going to eat each section individually on its own.
02:26As you should.
02:27As God intended.
02:28As God intended.
02:29You know, a lion doesn't take a bite of the liver and then go to the heart.
02:35They just start and they go.
02:38Yeah, because there's like eight others on the kill with them and they're just trying to eat before it all
02:42goes away.
02:44ESPN, Tim Bontemps, who says this is an easy decision.
02:47They should just go and get Sean Sweeney.
02:49Why the job is open?
02:51Obviously, we know what went down with the trade that shall not be mentioned.
02:57Positives of this job.
02:58It begins and ends with Flagg.
03:00Yes, there's other talent in the roster.
03:02A couple of first-round picks to work with this summer.
03:03But Cooper has a chance to be a true difference-making talent.
03:06The positional size and skill on the wing that make him one of the most malleable stars.
03:11Malleable.
03:12In the NBA, presenting the Mavs with flexibility and building out a contending roster around him.
03:16Flagg is an ideal building block who makes this an intriguing job all by himself.
03:21Negatives.
03:22For starters, there are the teams located a few hours north.
03:28And they're playing for the Western Conference Championship that will probably pose a threat for the next decade.
03:33The Mavs also have burned through their first-round picks for the next several years.
03:38And both Kyrie's age, 34, and Lively's injuries make it tough to rely on either of them being long-term
03:45building blocks around Coop.
03:48Did he say...
03:49Did Tim Bontemps...
03:50Sean skipped a word.
03:51Okay.
03:51That's what it was.
03:52All right.
03:53Sean and I both looked the same.
03:55They're like, does he think San Antonio's north of Dallas?
03:58He wrote, there are the teams located a few hours' drive north and southwest.
04:03Oh, okay.
04:04All right.
04:04I was like, wait a second.
04:05Yeah.
04:06I left out southwest.
04:07So that's the Mavs right up.
04:09Then you have Orlando.
04:10Then you have Portland.
04:12Then you have Chicago with the Pelicans and Milwaukee already filling their spots.
04:17Portland is the worst job without question.
04:20They are going to offer you the least amount of money.
04:22What's going on with that owner update?
04:23That owner is a cheap you-know-what.
04:26Now, in a related story, I think he lives here, so I want to temper this because you never know
04:30when someone's going to be your boss someday.
04:34But he is now looking for a coach, right?
04:39So one of the things they want is, by the way, they fired about 70 staffers.
04:43Did they?
04:44Yes.
04:44Wow.
04:45And they're just firing people left and right.
04:47They're probably also not going to replace their jobs.
04:50The problem is their jobs need to be done, which means that 70 jobs are now going to be filled
04:56by the remaining dozen or so people that work there.
05:00He did the same thing in Carolina with the NHL.
05:03Granted, it's worked there.
05:04Their team is very, very good.
05:06I don't know if that's because they fired a social media intern.
05:11But they have, it's been talking about, and that's where Tiago Splitter's name comes from, is he was the interim
05:16coach.
05:17And they were going to pay him, like, asking him to pay, like, the league low million dollars, maybe a
05:21million and a half.
05:22Whereas the starting salary for a first-year NBA head coach is around five million bucks.
05:27This goes Dallas, Orlando, Chicago, Portland.
05:32I'm fine with that.
05:34But Orlando does not have a first this year.
05:38Their first pick is number 46.
05:40Future first-round picks, they only have five of them.
05:43They only have one tradable future first-round pick.
05:46So they don't have a whole lot of assets.
05:49Chicago's got the assets.
05:50They're the one that have probably maybe the best crop of assets.
05:56I mean, they got picked four, 15, 38, and 56 this year.
06:00They got 12 future seconds.
06:02They got four tradable firsts.
06:04They got seven incoming firsts.
06:06So they've got a lot.
06:07But, you know, they don't have Cooper Flagg.
06:10We have Cooper Flagg.
06:11But, again, that's the biggest problem.
06:13There just seems to be too much dismissal or not enough discussion about it.
06:17Which, by the way, I'm surprised that in the positives of the job that Tim Bontemps didn't touch on.
06:22I'm like, oh, you get to work with Masai Ujiri, who's, like, had this history of building rosters up that,
06:26like, that he just kind of neglected that aspect of it.
06:29But the – there's just such a stunning lack of resources.
06:35Like, to really put – so it's – yeah, that's great that Flagg's one of the more flexible stars that
06:39you can build around.
06:40And you can have him do anything, and then you can – but with what?
06:44You've got, like, this one first-round pick that you've got coming up.
06:47And then you've got some pick swaps in the next few drafts with the Thunder and Spurs.
06:50So you're going to be picking 28, 29, 30-ish.
06:54And there's really not – like, you're going to have to hit on a few of the Brunson-type players
07:01that you let walk away.
07:03And that's a big ask.
07:05Jeremy Wu, ESPN, with the latest mock draft.
07:07DeBonsa, one to Washington.
07:09Friend of the show, Jeremy Wu.
07:11Darren Peterson, two to Utah.
07:13Boozer to the Grizz.
07:15Caleb Wilson to Chicago.
07:17Wagler to the Clippers.
07:20Acuff to Brooklyn.
07:22Flemings to Sacramento.
07:26Mara to –
07:27A day Mara, wow.
07:28To Atlanta.
07:30And then Mikel Brown to the Mavericks.
07:34Dallas is entering a new era with their new executives.
07:38This might be the Mavericks' most valuable selection for some time as they don't control the pick until 2031.
07:45The presence of Kyrie should not stop them from targeting a guard if they deem it the best route,
07:51with Brown's offensive upside worth considering.
07:54He measured well at the combine, registered a plus four wingspan.
07:59I don't know what that means.
08:00Giving him good size for a lead guard.
08:02Back injury made it difficult for him to boost his in-season stock, making the pre-draft process critical for
08:08showing teams he's healthy
08:09and reminding them of his significant offensive talent.
08:12He will receive looks higher than this, but his range could run toward the back of the lottery as teams
08:17await clarity on his long-term health coming off an inconsistent season.
08:21And then your boy Ament goes to the Bucs at 10.
08:25Buries to Golden State at 11.
08:28Ament is the guy that is like the super high upside, but also he could be a bust of busts.
08:35You never know, right?
08:36A plus four wingspan is, so he's 6'3 and a half.
08:39His wingspan is 6'7 and a half.
08:40Okay.
08:41Right?
08:41So it's a plus four.
08:42Which, by the way, history should note that's a Masai Ujiri draft trait staple.
08:51Yeah.
08:51Go look.
08:51I mean, he likes long, athletic guys, whether or not they're seasoned, skill, whatever.
08:59But you go down the list and like Ananobi and Siakam.
09:02So I think you can cross Kingston Fleming off that list for that very reason.
09:07You know, Acuff is 6'2, his wingspan is 6'7.
09:10Brown, 6'3 and a half, his wingspan is 6'7 and a half.
09:13Phylon, 6'2 and a half, wingspan is 6'6 and a half.
09:16You know, Fleming is 6'2 and a half, his wingspan is only 6'3.
09:19So you're talking about somebody who is barely, and I mean barely, bigger, longer wingspan.
09:25And that's not something that Masai has historically gone with.
09:29Are we going to be in the same position as we felt like the Cowboys were going to be in
09:34in the draft?
09:36Where we feel like...
09:36Lighted out?
09:37Yeah, where you just feel like there's three guys that you want to get there and you feel like they're
09:41all going to go like right in front of you.
09:43And it's just going to be one of those things where it's like we're just going to be praying on
09:45draft day that somebody passes on these guys.
09:48I think we are set up so beautifully because I really like Phylon.
09:55By the way, Kyrie Irving's wingspan is the same setup as Fleming's if you want to talk about the type
09:59of player Masai Ujiri likes.
10:01I really like LeBaron Phylon, and he is not going to go in the top eight.
10:04So I think either way, even if you get knocked out of Acuff, you get knocked out of Fleming, if
10:08you like him, I don't think they do.
10:09If you get knocked out of Brown and Burry's, I think you're okay because you...
10:14I don't think Maher's going to go eight or seven.
10:17I don't think so.
10:18If you get knocked out of all those guys, I think you could still get Phylon.
10:22So I think you're okay.
10:24And if you want Yaxel, you could still get him.
10:26Again, I don't know if they like him or not.
10:29Maybe he's too close in positions to flag.
10:31He's being mocked to OKC at 12.
10:33That's disgusting.
10:34That's disgusting because this guy is...
10:38I think he would carry a knife to a game and cut your heart out.
10:43He is such a competitor.
10:46He is an absolute dog.
10:49You want him on your team.
10:50And then Kareem Lopez, who another mock had us taking at nine, is down here to Charlotte at 14.
10:57Yeah, and I'm sure over the years that you guys have covered NBA draft stuff and tried to like,
11:03all right, let's get caught up on this.
11:04You guys, I'm sure, have used NBA DraftNet before.
11:07Oh, yeah.
11:07Which is like, they've got basically the point values of like, hey, this guy's shooting is an aide.
11:12And it's just a really effective...
11:14Look, Kareem Lopez still, and that's a website that specializes in it,
11:18they don't have a scouting report written on him still.
11:21There's no scouting report on Kareem Lopez.
11:23There's no scouting report, and there's like no numbered values on any of his traits.
11:29Well, no matter what they do, during the Masai Ujiri presser, after getting rid of Jason Kidd,
11:37I think this was perfectly crafted to try to be as opposite of Nico as possible.
11:45We all have to have a united front and think the same way.
11:49And we're going to continue to build this team to think like that.
11:53So have patience with us, you know, like we're going to get there.
11:56But just know that we're all going to communicate with you, with the fans, with the media, the right way.
12:03An appropriate way, be transparent in how we deal with these things.
12:08And I am going to sit here and take responsibilities for any of the decisions we are going to make.
12:14It's not about being defensive.
12:15It's not about being any.
12:17We're just going to have a vision here that we are going to follow.
12:21So, yeah, so this is very important for us.
12:24How many shots did you hear there?
12:26That was a clear Gina Miller, Patrick Dumont, sit down and stress, stress, stress.
12:31We're going to communicate differently.
12:33I was going to say, how much of that is just his own analysis on what he's seen
12:37or his own take on what he saw when he came and looked at the organization versus Gina Miller
12:42and whatever crisis PR firms they had hired for the Mavericks just getting together and be like,
12:46all right, look, here's what you got to do when this starts.
12:49You guys got to start being clear about you.
12:51Because it really is just one of the most.
12:54I don't think I'll ever get over the PR what they did after the trade.
12:59Yes.
12:59The most egregious disrespectful treatment of a fan base over the course of several months over and over and over
13:06again.
13:07But despite public pushback that I can ever recall in any sport.
13:10And this is the kind of thing that they're going to have to say and present and build back trust
13:15that, hey,
13:16we actually respect you guys as fans of the team, and we're going to do our best to earn back
13:21that trust.
13:21And he said in the press that this organization needs clarity, one direction.
13:25Were you with me, Joe, at the speaking engagement in Frisco out there with Spittle?
13:29I went out there with someone.
13:31And Spittle, we went up on some stage to talk of community business people.
13:37And it was like, what's your advice to any team in DFW?
13:40And I, like, destroyed Mavs' PR.
13:42And then I'm walking on.
13:44Was it you, Joe?
13:45Okay.
13:46He heard about it.
13:48It kind of.
13:49A lot of people heard about it.
13:50A lot of people heard about it.
13:51And I get off the stage, and they're like, the Mavs, like, assistant number two or someone really important is
13:59back here.
14:00Oh, good.
14:00So they heard it.
14:01Yeah.
14:01I was like, okay.
14:03And then they're like, I'd like to introduce you to them.
14:05And I was like, no.
14:07You don't want to.
14:08No, I'm not going to.
14:09And they're like, it'll be okay.
14:11And everyone was kind of, like, on their tippy toes and eggshell.
14:14I don't think I'm going to be invited back.
14:16But I was like, just don't be like the Dallas Mavericks, as the Mavericks were in there.
14:19But what do you want?
14:21I mean, you invite me out there, you know what you're going to get.
14:23They know.
14:24They're aware of how stupid.
14:25They didn't know.
14:26No.
14:26Now they know.
14:27Now they know.
14:27You had to be aware of how stupid you were.
14:29Is that why they were there, do you think?
14:30They weren't there as, like, any sort.
14:32They were there to, like, learn.
14:33They were taking notes.
14:34Like, all right, go to this panel.
14:35We're going to hear some things.
14:37But, man, it really is just the way that they mishandled that so consistently.
14:45Because that's the thing.
14:46After a while, it stopped feeling.
14:46Like, the Patriots are trying to catch them right now with this Vrabel thing.
14:49Yeah.
14:50But that is a college class.
14:54That is a college class in PR and what not to do.
14:56It's one of those things where it got to a point with Nico and their responses a few
15:02months after where it's like, this no longer just feels like, wow, how blind can you be
15:08and how ignorant can you be?
15:08This almost feels like you are defiant and wanting to challenge an entire fan base and
15:13tell them, you are not as smart as me.
15:16You don't deserve my respect.
15:18Every single step of the way.
15:20And the fact that we've talked about it, the fact that Nico Harrison still lives in this
15:23area, I think, proves just how defiant he is.
15:26And delusional.
15:27Delusional or defiant.
15:28I agree.
