00:01I'm sick and tired of living this way
00:05Over and over, I pray and I pray
00:11A young mum in trauma
00:14She rang me and she just said to me
00:16I've lost my child, social service, they've just come round
00:19Evie Adams has done nothing wrong
00:21But what about the new man in her life?
00:24No one is coming to rescue me
00:29I didn't know who he was
00:33And if I ask people about him
00:35He's a bad'un, he's a bad'un
00:38And that's all we got
00:39Two troubled lovers sharing a timeline of torment
00:44And then one goes quiet
00:45What has happened to Evie Adams?
00:49It all just kind of changed
00:50But then it was too late for her
00:52She was already in love with him
00:54I'm sick and tired of living this way
00:58Over and over, I pray and I pray
01:19At just three years old
01:21Evie Adams quickly formed a deep bond with her foster family
01:25Who welcomed her into their home with open arms
01:29When she came to us at first, she was very shy
01:33And within a week, she changed
01:36She was starting coming out of herself
01:39Bit of a daredevil, Dippy
01:41She was singing all the time
01:43She was a brilliant child
01:46She absolutely loved Bernard and Yvonne
01:48Absolutely adored him so much
01:50She was like, they've saved me
01:52They've saved me
01:53Like, where would I be without him now?
01:57After three years together
01:58The family decides to make things permanent
02:02She absolutely loved it
02:04When we adopted her
02:05All she wanted to do was change her name to ours
02:08And we said, well, no
02:10It's a bit of a wrong time, yeah
02:12When you're old enough, you can change it to ours
02:16Sure enough, on her 16th birthday
02:19She gets what she's always wanted
02:23When Evie changed her name
02:25She changed her person
02:26And because she got our name
02:28It was the big thing, you know
02:30Going around telling everybody
02:31I'm not that person before
02:33You know, like with her own name
02:35It was brilliant
02:36I think the adoption and Bernard's family
02:39That secure base was successful
02:42Because, you know
02:42She was able to go to college
02:44She was studying to become a hairdresser
02:46It's while studying
02:47That Evie meets Holly Drakeley
02:49Who soon becomes part of the family
02:51We instantly had this proper good bond
02:54It was like the sister I'd never had
02:57Kind of situation
02:58She was just like an amazing girl
03:00Like, she was just adorable
03:03You just wanted to squeeze her face off
03:05Evie makes friends easily
03:07And her infectious personality
03:09Is a hit with the punters
03:11When she lands her first job at 15
03:14Before Evie left school
03:15We had a pub
03:17And she used to help out there
03:19She used to glass collect
03:20She'd do anything to help, really
03:22And life at home
03:23Was where Evie truly thrived
03:27She really loved being at home
03:29It meant everything to her
03:31She couldn't do enough for you
03:32She wanted to help
03:33You know, can I wash up
03:34Can I help you cope
03:36She just loved to be around
03:38People that she loved
03:41She liked to be there
03:42She had a heart of gold
03:43And she just absolutely loved being at home
03:46She enjoyed being around her friends and stuff
03:48Like, she absolutely loved her home life
03:52But it's not the home life Evie always had
03:56Evie's upbringing when she was a little girl
03:58Was abusive
03:59There was neglect
04:00There was a lot of serious abuse factors
04:03In her early, early years
04:05Evie was removed from her birth family
04:08When she was very young
04:09And then she was placed in foster care
04:11She had a rough time with her family
04:13Her family were a bit of a notorious family
04:16For getting in trouble with the police
04:18And one thing or another
04:21Nobody taking care of her properly
04:23She would help her walk in the streets
04:25In the middle of the night
04:26And that sort of thing
04:29She did tell me she was adopted
04:31And she did say she got abused as a child
04:34But she didn't tell me too much
04:37Like, she weren't reserved about it
04:40Evie knows her adopted family transformed her life
04:43And now, at just 16
04:46She's already dreaming of building a home
04:49And a family of her own
04:51When she started going out with Nathan
04:53They came in, we invited him round
04:55Started coming round for his tea
04:57They go in the front room
04:59A really nice lad
05:01He was everything her family had hoped
05:04That she would meet
05:05And indeed, the relationship appeared happy
05:11Eventually, she moved out
05:12I weren't happy about that
05:14That they moved out
05:14They moved in together
05:16It was mostly good
05:17Some bad
05:18Like there is in every relationship
05:21But her and Nathan together
05:23Were, like, perfect for each other
05:25I was proud of her
05:26Because she was doing her own thing
05:28We helped her out
05:29They got their own home
05:30They were all making
05:32Say, everything was fine
05:33Fast forward a couple of years
05:35And the pair have some exciting news
05:38Evie would be round about
05:4119 and a half, 20
05:42When she fell pregnant
05:45And she would, she would proud
05:47She would proud, really proud
05:49She would, all of the men
05:51When she found out you were a girl
05:52She was just really happy to be pregnant
05:54And she glowed as well through it
05:56The family's excitement
05:58Turns to anguish
05:59When tragedy strikes
06:01With the death of a close relative
06:03Just as Evie goes into labour
06:06At the time it were
06:09Joyful
06:11And sad
06:11It were, like, mixed emotions
06:13It were turned against each other
06:15All the time
06:16You know, how could God be so cruel
06:19One in and one out on the same day
06:23She were upset
06:24You could tell in her voice
06:25That she just wasn't happy
06:26We weren't there for Evie at the time
06:28You know, it was like
06:30Post-natal depression
06:31So we weren't actually
06:33There at the time
06:36When she needed us most
06:38She were on her own all day
06:40With the child
06:41And he'd come right home from work
06:43And go round to his mother
06:44He'd take the baby round
06:45And she'd be sat in on her own
06:48And it really
06:51Took her on the downward spiral
06:54Evie's relationship with her partner
06:56Is heading the same way
06:58They were arguing all the time
07:00And it just got a bit too toxic
07:02You can say
07:03So it was just better if they separated
07:05And parted ways
07:07Bernard and his family
07:08Gave her, you know, the money
07:10And the support
07:10To set up on her own somewhere
07:13Evie, the adopted child
07:15Doesn't want to be on her own
07:18She was scared of quite a lot of things
07:19At the time
07:20She didn't know how
07:21She was going to do it alone
07:23She was worried about money
07:25Just the usual stuff
07:27When you part ways with someone
07:29She was worrying
07:30That she was going to be on her own
07:31All the time
07:33We moved her in the new house
07:35Nathan was still going round
07:36She seemed all right
07:39And then people started telling us
07:42That there was somebody else there
07:44Jordan Monaghan, age 28
07:47He's already a father of two
07:50She did tell me
07:51She was going on a date
07:52With someone off Tinder
07:53Called Jordan
07:53So I was like, right, okay
07:55I was like, just keep your wits about
07:57You know, you're a young girl
07:58Like, you're in a bit of a vulnerable position
07:59Just be careful
08:02And then she came off the date
08:03She rang me up
08:04And she was like
08:05It seems really lovely
08:06This, that and other
08:07I was like, right, okay
08:08Then I was like, just take it slow
08:12Quite quickly there were rumours
08:13That Jordan Monaghan
08:14Was at that new house
08:16Quite a lot
08:17By this point
08:18He'd already got a reputation
08:20People were talking about him
08:22He had pockets full of money
08:23Wads of money
08:26He's standing in the middle of the pub
08:27Counting them
08:29I was like, look at what I've got
08:30Type of thing
08:33He had a number of businesses
08:35And his brother had a
08:36Construction building business
08:38They were doing paving
08:40And driveways
08:41And stuff like that
08:42But it never made sense to me
08:44To have that amount of money
08:46Every day
08:48Doesn't come from construction
08:51He was charming
08:52And he were happy
08:54To spend whatever it takes
08:55To make her happy
08:56He'd do anything
08:57To make her happy
08:59So I couldn't understand
09:01Why she didn't want to know
09:04But some had heard otherwise
09:06About Jordan
09:07And not such a charming side
09:11I didn't know
09:12Who he was
09:14And if he asked people
09:15About him
09:16He's a bad one
09:17He's a bad one
09:18And that's
09:19That's all we got
09:22There was just something
09:23About him that were off
09:25It just clicked in my head
09:26I was like
09:26There's something not right
09:27With him
09:28And I did try
09:29And explain it to Evie
09:30But she was like
09:31Smitten
09:31That she won't listen
09:32She didn't want to know
09:34Evie may not know it
09:36But Jordan lives up to his reputation
09:39And it's the reason
09:40His ex-partner left him
09:42His partner uncovered
09:44A gambling addiction
09:45And challenged Jordan
09:46On the fact that
09:47He had run up considerable debt
09:48Because of the gambling
09:51There were times
09:52I'd seen him put
09:534,500 pound in a bandit
09:55And there are further
09:57Rumours circulating
09:58There were rumours
09:59Going out about
10:00About a lad
10:01Who murdered his kids
10:02Off one of the
10:05Locals of me
10:06The pub that he used to be in
10:08There was rumours
10:10That he murdered the kids
10:14He was under investigation
10:15Because both children died
10:17In suspicious circumstances
10:20Both children
10:21Were found to have died
10:22Having been alone
10:23In Jordan's company
10:26As a result
10:27Jordan needs to be on his guard
10:29When he's out
10:30He couldn't go and black
10:31Because of what happened
10:32With the kids
10:35People
10:36Naughty ways
10:37Were on the lookout for him
10:40Understandably
10:41Evie's adopted parents
10:42Have their concerns
10:44I confronted Evie over it
10:46Everybody says that about him
10:48They've got him wrong
10:50My big worry
10:52Was the grandchild
10:54If he's done that
10:55Like could he do it again
10:57As tensions rise
10:59And suspicions grow
11:00The questions loom large
11:03Is Evie in deeper danger
11:06Than she realises
11:07And what does this mean
11:09And what does this mean
11:09For those closest to her
11:18As Evie and Jordan
11:20Grow closer
11:21She began to withdraw
11:22From those around her
11:24Her family start to notice
11:26The changes in her
11:27She's becoming secretive
11:29Distant
11:30And lies to them
11:32Now that might be
11:33Because she's also
11:34Trying to protect
11:36Monaghan
11:37And not allow him
11:38To be identified
11:40By her family
11:41As someone
11:42That they should be wary of
11:43The lies just come
11:46Longer and longer
11:47And it got to Stacey
11:49And look
11:49I don't believe a word
11:51You're telling me
11:51You're lying to me
11:52I said you
11:53Me and your mum
11:54Pull £1,200 out
11:56To buy you an house
11:57To be a love shag
11:59We like drifted apart
12:01She could only bring me
12:02If she went to her dad's
12:05Coercive controlling behaviour
12:07Is at the heart
12:09Of domestic abuse
12:10And that's what
12:11We are seeing here
12:12And that controlling behaviour
12:13Is designed
12:14It's designed
12:15With a particular
12:16Purpose in mind
12:17And that's to make
12:19Evie dependent
12:20On Monaghan
12:21And to isolate her
12:23From her family
12:24And from other
12:25Sources of advice
12:27And that sense of isolation
12:29Is going to be magnified
12:31Within the community
12:32Because Monaghan
12:34Is suspected
12:35Of having killed
12:36His children
12:37And therefore
12:38People won't want
12:39To be seen
12:40To be talking to Evie
12:42And especially
12:42Talking to Monaghan
13:00The police
13:01Did come to warn
13:03Evie
13:03They chose to come
13:04And share information
13:05With her
13:05That her child
13:06Was at risk
13:07That she was at risk
13:10She doesn't
13:11For whatever reason
13:12Take heed
13:12Of the warning
13:14The police are so concerned
13:15They actually take her
13:16To a place of safety
13:17And saying
13:18You're not safe
13:19With this man
13:19A restraining order
13:20Is issued
13:21To keep
13:22Jordan
13:22Away from Evie
13:25Without evidence
13:27To charge him
13:27Monaghan
13:28Is released
13:29On bail
13:29As police
13:30Continue to investigate
13:32The deaths
13:33Of his children
13:34Despite police warnings
13:36Evie can't stay
13:38Away from him
13:38Her friend
13:40Holly
13:40Is concerned
13:42We all went to
13:43Blackpool
13:44For a night out
13:44Me, Evie
13:45And Jordan
13:46We had a really
13:47Good night
13:47But she couldn't
13:49Dance
13:51And that's when
13:52It clicked in my head
13:53I thought
13:53This is not right
13:54Like she has to
13:55Be by his side
13:56Constantly
13:57And it wasn't right
13:59Even the bar staff
14:00At their local pub
14:01Noticed the unusual
14:02Dynamic
14:03Between Evie
14:04And Jordan
14:06Evie and Jordan
14:07Roy stayed
14:07Back in the booth
14:08And they were a bit more
14:09Like Evie
14:10Weren't allowed
14:11To do much
14:11Who like
14:12She always had to
14:13Be near him
14:13So she couldn't
14:15Go and enjoy
14:15Herself with your friends
14:16If they went off
14:17Dancing and stuff
14:18It kind of like
14:19Went from this charming
14:21I'll do anything
14:22For you
14:23Kind of person
14:23To you'll do
14:24Everything I tell you
14:25To do
14:26And you'll like it
14:28Like you could see
14:29His whole demeanour
14:30Changed about him
14:31It gone from
14:33Being so nice
14:34To always angry
14:35Always shouting at her
14:38It all just kind of
14:39Changed
14:40But then it was
14:41Too late for her
14:41She was already
14:43In the claim
14:51Evie and Jordan
14:52Had been together
14:54For 12 months
14:54When police once again
14:56Attempt to help Evie
15:27There was a restraining order
15:28Social services have just been round
15:29And I was like
15:30Oh right why
15:30She was like
15:31Because I'm with Jordan
15:32I said right okay
15:33I was like look
15:34I said just do what
15:35Social services want you to do
15:37And she was like
15:37Right okay I will
15:38I was like
15:39And what exactly
15:40Have they said
15:40I need to keep Jordan
15:41I need to keep Jordan away
15:42From my daughter
15:43So I was like right
15:44Okay then
15:44So I was like just do that
15:46This advice was echoed
15:49By Evie's adopted parents
15:50Why just not
15:52Move to another town
15:54Don't tell anybody where you are
15:55We'll be in touch
15:57We'll come over every day
15:58No
16:01And then a couple of weeks later
16:04I got a phone call
16:05Quite late at night
16:06About 10 o'clock
16:07And she rang me
16:09She just said to me
16:11I've lost my child
16:13I said what
16:14She went I've lost my child
16:16Social services
16:17They've just come round
16:17And took her
16:18And I was like why
16:20She went because Jordan was here
16:24I turned round and told her
16:25The exact reason
16:28She got took away
16:29From her parents
16:30For
16:31Was for what was happening
16:33To her
16:34My heart broke
16:35A little bit for her
16:36Because I thought
16:36You didn't deserve this
16:38But you've made
16:40The wrong decisions
16:41Evie is allowed
16:42A supervised visit
16:43With her baby
16:44Twice a week
16:46She was heart broke
16:47I mean
16:49Don't get me wrong
16:50She would never miss a contact
16:52She loved the child
16:53And she'd always ring up
16:56Every day
16:56See how she were
16:57And how she would do
16:58You can see why people
17:01Would find that
17:01Really confusing
17:02You know
17:03Why she wouldn't just
17:03Try and leave
17:04That relationship
17:05For me
17:06That raises questions
17:07About how controlling
17:08And powerful
17:09That relationship
17:09Actually is
17:11Why would she stay
17:12And maybe it's not about
17:14Why would she stay
17:15Maybe it's about
17:16Why couldn't she leave
17:19She's actually come to
17:21White House
17:21And she bruises
17:22On her arm
17:22So what's happened
17:23There
17:23Oh I fell
17:24I said how many times
17:25Ten
17:27Yeah I've definitely
17:28Witnessed him
17:29Showing at her
17:30Yeah definitely
17:31And I've witnessed him
17:32Get aggressive
17:33With other people
17:34As well
17:35There are financial
17:36Pressures on the
17:37Relationship
17:38Causing tension
17:39For Evie
17:40Went out with me
17:41At one night
17:41And somebody
17:42Turned on and said
17:43To me that
17:43Jordan's been
17:44Sacked from his job
17:45I said well
17:45What's he been
17:45Sacked for
17:46He's just because
17:46People's been
17:47Ringing up
17:48And telling the
17:49Company he worked
17:49For
17:50That he's a murderer
17:51He's killed his kids
17:54And it was for his own
17:55Safety
17:55They finished him
17:56Now that's when
17:57She started
17:59Saying she'd
17:59No money
18:01I need shopping
18:04She weren't paying
18:05Her rent
18:07But she was on
18:08Benefits
18:08So where was
18:10The money going
18:12It was just
18:12Unbelievable
18:14Evie is evicted
18:15Her life
18:16As she knows it
18:17Is falling apart
18:19She'd obviously
18:20Lost a baby
18:21She went from
18:21A stable home
18:22To living into
18:23Hostels and things
18:24Like that
18:25Just trying to
18:25Get by
18:27Before she
18:27Were with Jordan
18:28She was
18:29Happy go
18:29All okay
18:30Like going out
18:31But he stopped
18:32All that
18:33He cut
18:34All her friends
18:35Off
18:35They couldn't
18:36Have
18:36Couldn't have
18:38Anything to do
18:38With anybody
18:40She's lost
18:41A child
18:41She's lost
18:42A house
18:42She's living
18:43In a homeless
18:44Shelter
18:44Like what else
18:45Can she lose
18:57Evie wants
18:58To regain
18:59To regain
18:59To regain
18:59Custody
18:59Of her daughter
19:00And hopes
19:01To escape
19:02Jordan
19:02Monaghan
19:03She moves
19:04Into a women's
19:06Refuge
19:0650 miles away
19:08In Kendall
19:08But Jordan
19:10Won't give her up
19:11Without a fight
19:13She tried
19:14She tried to end it
19:14She rang me
19:16He's following me
19:17I said
19:17Ring the police
19:19No I don't want to
19:20I don't want to
19:21Take it that far
19:22But he's following me
19:23Wherever I go
19:25I mean if she's not
19:26Safe in a refuge
19:27You wonder
19:28How can she
19:28Ever be safe
19:30You were tracking
19:30A phone
19:31To find out
19:31Where she were
19:33Accusing her
19:33Of being with other men
19:37When that tactic
19:39Fails
19:39Jordan goes
19:40To extreme lengths
19:42Police went
19:43To see her
19:45He was on the
19:45Rooftop
19:47Impressed
19:47And threatened
19:48To jump
19:48Because
19:49She won't have
19:50Nothing to do
19:50With him
19:53She's positioned
19:54As the cause
19:56And the solution
19:56To his behaviour
19:58You know
19:58To his suicide attempt
19:59That she's the only one
20:01That can make him
20:01Feel better
20:02So you know
20:03Maybe that did
20:04Sort of pull them
20:05Back together
20:06Or draw Evie back
20:07Maybe she felt
20:08Responsible
20:09That she was supposed
20:09To be in that relationship
20:10Because if she isn't
20:12He's going to kill himself
20:14Jordan's tactic works
20:16I hadn't spoke to her
20:17For a couple of days
20:18And then I got a phone call
20:19Saying she was back
20:20In Blackburn
20:22I'm back with Jordan
20:26Evie is again
20:27Shut off
20:28From the outside world
20:29As Monaghan
20:31Controls
20:31Her every move
20:33And you can imagine
20:34From her past
20:35He would use that
20:37As well
20:37To completely undermine
20:38Her self-esteem
20:39Her confidence
20:40You'd never be worth anything
20:42Because of what happened
20:42To you when you're younger
20:43You might as well
20:44Be unique
20:44Because nobody else
20:45Will have you
20:47She went from her happy
20:49Bubbly self
20:50To this shadow
20:52In about three months
20:54It went quick
20:56And it went fast
20:57That wasn't my best friend
20:59That was just some lost soul
21:01That had been beaten down
21:04So much
21:05That she just wasn't
21:07Who she was
21:08It wasn't Evie anymore
21:16Still under Monaghan's influence
21:19Evie is heading to Blackpool
21:20For a short break with him
21:22And some friends
21:23But it's not the respite
21:26She might have hoped for
21:30So during the holiday
21:32During that break
21:33When they were together
21:34With the other couple
21:35Jordan had become aggressive
21:37He was argumentative
21:39He'd slammed doors
21:41He'd stormed off
21:41He'd punched a wall
21:42Their friends are deeply concerned
21:45Even more so
21:46When they witness
21:47An odd exchange
21:48Between Evie and Monaghan
21:50The other couple
21:52That they've gone away with
21:53On their break
21:54Reported
21:55Seeing Jordan
21:57Give Evie
21:58Tablets out of a brown glass bottle
22:01He told her
22:02They were painkillers
22:03And even the friends
22:04Thought it was a bit odd
22:05Because the glass bottle
22:06They were using
22:07They went out of date
22:07A long time ago
22:12And it was
22:13The day after
22:15They got back
22:15From that short break
22:16That Evie said
22:18This relationship is over
22:19I'm done
22:27Evie Adams
22:28Begins searching
22:29For a new flat
22:30To live in
22:31Desperate to escape
22:33The toxic relationship
22:36Monaghan
22:36Is making other plans
22:38Within a few days
22:40Of Evie making it clear
22:42That this relationship
22:43Is over
22:43Jordan
22:44Is on a whatsapp group
22:46UK tablets
22:47And he's looking
22:48To procure
22:49Zopiclone
22:50Diazepam
22:51And gabapentin
22:53A shopping list
22:54Of drugs
22:55Usually prescribed
22:56For pain relief
22:57But if taken
22:59In large doses
23:00Can be extremely dangerous
23:02Those kind of drugs
23:03Change people's behaviours
23:05Their resolve
23:05Their determination
23:06Their whole characters
23:08Within a couple of days
23:11Evie starts to feel
23:12Very unwell
23:18Too unwell
23:20To leave the house
23:21Evie's search
23:22For a new flat
23:23Is put on hold
23:24So you've now got
23:26A more compliant Evie
23:27You've not got an Evie
23:28Who wants to leave
23:29And that's exactly
23:30What Jordan was looking for
23:31Says
23:34I'm feeling really sick
23:36I've looked online
23:37And I've got
23:38Stomach flu
23:40I said to him
23:41What gives you that idea
23:42Well I said
23:43I'll come down
23:44And take you to doctors
23:44Oh no no no no
23:46Oh no no
23:48I've made an appointment
23:49I've made an appointment
23:54Jordan Monaghan calls
23:56NHS 111
23:57Reporting Evie's symptoms
23:59As four days
24:01Of vomiting
24:02And dizziness
24:03An appointment
24:04Is made
24:04But he's not taking her
24:06To the doctor's appointments
24:07He receives return calls
24:10From the 111 service
24:12But they're ignored
24:13So Evie
24:15Takes matters
24:16Into her own hands
24:17There is a text message
24:19That Evie sends
24:20When she's very ill
24:21To her friend
24:22Saying
24:22Jordan keeps stressing
24:24He won't let me see a doctor
24:25Monaghan seems determined
24:28To keep Evie
24:29From recovering
24:34Monaghan calls
24:35111 again
24:36This time reporting
24:38Evie
24:39As having abdominal pain
24:40To return calls
24:43Are ignored
24:44So we've got a man
24:45Who is denying her access
24:47For help
24:48And when it appears
24:49She's sharing that
24:50With a friend
24:51All of a sudden
24:52He's the caring boyfriend
24:53I'm on it
24:54I've got this
24:54111
24:55I'm all over it
24:55Don't worry
24:56I'm looking after it
24:59Evie's condition
25:00Deteriorates
25:01You couldn't make
25:02Head and the tail
25:03Of what she was saying
25:04She was
25:05You know
25:06Like she was drunk
25:08She's going to be
25:09Presenting to people
25:10If she is coming
25:10Into contact with them
25:11As maybe
25:12Oh she's a druggie
25:13Oh she's drunk
25:14So people are less likely
25:15To want to engage with her
25:18We can only really
25:19Imagine how confusing
25:20And terrifying
25:21That must be
25:22The feeling
25:23That something
25:25Is going horribly wrong
25:26And you don't know
25:27What it is
25:29And you're taking
25:30These tablets
25:31That your partner
25:32Is telling you to take
25:33But you're getting
25:34Worse and worse
25:36It must have been
25:38Terrifying
25:38When Evie
25:40Misses the chance
25:41To visit her daughter
25:42Bernard and his wife
25:43Know it's serious
25:47She says
25:48Mum
25:49I can't get the
25:50I'm that hell
25:51The state that
25:52Evie would have been in
25:53Because of the amount
25:55Of sedative drug
25:56That she's been given
25:57It's likely that she
25:58Wouldn't have known
25:59What she was taking
25:59Or how many she'd taken
26:01That day
26:02For her to miss a visit
26:03It was just
26:05Nowhere
26:07She'd have walked
26:07From Ken
26:09When she was up at Ken
26:10She'd have walked
26:10From Ken
26:11All the way to Blackburn
26:12To see her
26:15He doesn't want her
26:16To leave the house
26:17Even if she could
26:19A moment of relief
26:21When Bernard's wife
26:22Hears from Evie
26:24She got a text message
26:25Put some stuff
26:27Outside your door
26:27So my wife goes
26:29To the door
26:30There's like a wicker basket
26:31With bits of bats
26:33And colouring stuff
26:34I came home
26:35Looked on CCTV
26:37It was a girl
26:38That had brought stuff
26:39It weren't her
26:40So obviously
26:41It weren't her
26:43Texting saying
26:44That's in common
26:46Coercive control
26:47Is a pattern of behaviour
26:49That an abuser
26:50Will use
26:51To establish dominance
26:52Over the victim
26:54Within their relationship
26:55And often one of the tactics
26:57That the abuser will use
26:59Is to limit the amount
27:00Of contacts
27:01That the victim has
27:03Externally
27:04From the relationship
27:06Because if you can
27:07Reduce the number
27:08Of contacts
27:09Family and friends
27:10That the victim
27:11Would normally
27:12Seek advice from
27:13Then that will mean
27:15That the victim
27:16Becomes more dependent
27:18Upon the abuser
27:19So this is about
27:21Domination
27:21This is about
27:23Making the victim
27:24Feel
27:25That they only
27:27Can have
27:27A relationship
27:29With the person
27:30Who's abusing them
27:32It's now been
27:33Two months
27:33Since Holly
27:34Spoke to her friend
27:35I tried to ring her
27:37One day
27:37And I got a message
27:39I can't speak to you
27:40At the minute
27:40I'll ring her
27:41When I get to my dad's
27:42Just a drought
27:43Okay
27:44That phone call
27:45Never came
27:48Sorry
27:49Yeah
27:50That phone call
27:51Never came
27:53In the ten days
27:55Since Evie
27:56First reported
27:57Feeling ill
27:57She's not seen
27:59A doctor
28:00During this time
28:01She has unknowingly
28:03Taken a combination
28:04Of prescription drugs
28:05Given to her
28:07By Monaghan
28:07The effects
28:09Are shocking
28:10Evie
28:11Has sent this text
28:12Message to Jordan
28:13Saying I feel
28:14Like I'm dying
28:15She doesn't know
28:16That the purpose
28:18Of those drugs
28:19Is to suppress
28:20Her system
28:21So
28:22Her heart rate
28:23Is probably
28:24Going to be very low
28:25Her breathing rate
28:25Will have slowed down
28:27It's causing
28:28A lot of damage
28:29And so to say
28:30You know
28:31I feel like I'm dying
28:32She probably did feel
28:34Like she was dying
28:34Because everything
28:35Was shutting down
28:41Whilst at work
28:42Monaghan receives
28:43A text message
28:44Seemingly from Evie
28:46I've taken the drugs
28:47And I don't want
28:48To be here anymore
28:48And I don't want
28:49To help
28:49His aunt goes
28:51Round to the house
28:52To check on Evie
28:53And that's when
28:54They find that Evie
28:55In a really dangerous
28:56Situation medically
28:57And an ambulance
28:58Is called
29:01Jordan returns
29:03To the address
29:04The paramedics
29:05Are there
29:06The police
29:06Are there
29:07And he cries
29:09And he also claims
29:12To give over
29:13The blister packs
29:14Of the medication
29:15That he thought
29:16Evie might be taking
29:18They don't know it yet
29:20But Monaghan
29:21Has Evie's phone
29:23Bernard and his wife
29:25Have no idea
29:26The events
29:27Which are unfolding
29:28Across town
29:29We're sat there
29:30Watching telly
29:31About ten past ten
29:33At night
29:34Police sergeant
29:36Knocks on the door
29:37Can I come in?
29:38Well what's up?
29:40Well can I come in
29:40I'll tell you
29:41Evie Adams
29:42Yeah
29:44Sadly she's passed away
29:45She's committed suicide
29:53I was sat at work
29:54I'd just finished
29:55A night shift
29:55I was sat at work
29:56And I started laughing
29:58And I was like
29:59She can't be dead
30:00Like
30:00She said she was
30:01Going to ring me
30:02Like she'd never
30:03Not ring me
30:05I'm sorry
30:07Her family and friends
30:08Are struggling
30:09To understand
30:10What has happened
30:11To Evie
30:12Why would
30:13Why would she
30:14Commit suicide?
30:14She wouldn't miss
30:16The child for anything
30:18I mean if it meant
30:19Walking from London
30:20She'd walk
30:21She just would not
30:23Miss that contact
30:24She'd never leave
30:25A child ever
30:26She just wouldn't
30:27Do that
30:30I just knew
30:31Something inside me
30:32Just knew that
30:32She wasn't to blame
30:34He was
30:35Monaghan
30:36Monaghan is already
30:36Suspected
30:37Of killing his children
30:39By people in the community
30:40And news of Evie's death
30:43Quickly spreads online
30:45The fallout
30:47Immediately after the death
30:48On social media
30:49It were big
30:49It were big
30:51Because
30:53This girl was in a relationship
30:54With someone
30:55And now she's dead
30:56What's happened?
30:59Like what's happened to her
31:01Despite initial evidence
31:03Suggesting suicide
31:04After just 24 hours
31:06The police
31:08Have another theory
31:09Forced marriage
31:10Turned round
31:11And told her straight
31:13They were 99%
31:15Sure
31:16That it wasn't
31:19Suicide
31:22She'd been murdered
31:26Monaghan
31:27Monaghan
31:27Is a key suspect
31:28But the police
31:30Have no evidence
31:32To charge him
31:38As investigators
31:40Try to piece together
31:41What has happened
31:42To Evie Adams
31:43Her suspected killer
31:45Jordan Monaghan
31:47Is back to his old ways
31:49Drinking and gambling
31:50Down at the local pub
31:52He soon makes friends at the bar with Jake Marsden and Sue Dorries.
31:59The only story I knew for a long time was Evie wasn't so well
32:02and Evie took tablets and committed suicide purposely.
32:06I just started chatting to him.
32:08He told me a little bit about Evie.
32:10He told me that obviously she'd committed suicide.
32:13So to me it was just, oh, bless.
32:15I'm really sorry, but I tried to make it a bit light for him
32:19because he seemed really sad.
32:28He went to a solicitor so she couldn't actually have a funeral for over a month
32:34because we were waiting for some decision on one thing and another.
32:39I know there was a lot of concerns because he threatened to turn up
32:43at the funeral and firebomb the place.
32:47We got her body, moved out of town.
32:50Because we expected him breaking in.
32:54You know, that's the type of person they were.
32:56Monaghan's playing the role of being a grieving partner.
33:01My partner, Evie, committed suicide.
33:04He's trying to elicit sympathy.
33:07He's trying to get the community on side.
33:10At the same time, it's another form of control.
33:13He's demonstrating the same level of control that he did when Evie was alive.
33:18This is just another manifestation of his need to have power
33:22to obliterate her personality.
33:25And I also get the sense this is a kind of verbal staging behavior.
33:30He's trying to plant seeds in the community
33:33as to what happened to Evie that isn't true.
33:37He's trying to plant the seed that she took her own life,
33:39whereas, in fact, Monaghan killed her.
33:47Bernard is determined to keep Monaghan away from the funeral.
33:53But Monaghan himself has other ideas.
33:57Perhaps looking for an opportunity to plant evidence.
34:02Jordan asks a mutual friend to put a photograph in Evie's coffin.
34:08And so he invites the friend over to the house to get this photo.
34:12He picked something up.
34:15And this suicide note dropped out of the picture from him.
34:21But it weren't even at the house.
34:23This was his parents' house.
34:25You know, it just doesn't make sense.
34:29Handwriting experts are drafted in
34:31to try and make sense of this new evidence.
34:35Evie's funeral goes ahead.
34:37There was police at gates going in,
34:40all different exits,
34:42and we were wet for the week after.
34:44The police was outside there, back and front, all the time.
34:51It wasn't sad. It was happy.
34:53Everybody was there to celebrate Evie's life.
34:58Monaghan remains out on bail.
35:00He surrounds himself with people who are unaware of his secrets.
35:05He ended up being my, like, little drinking partner-type thing,
35:08partner in crime.
35:09And, yeah, it was always fun and quite a good laugh.
35:15We had a little bit of a party at the pub for my birthday.
35:19And it was funny because there was a couple of girls,
35:23Polish girls come in, really nice girls,
35:26and they were talking to Jake and Jordan.
35:27And they were like, ooh, and Jordan's mum,
35:29I don't know what to do.
35:30He said, I've never been out with a girl since I went out with Evie.
35:34He said, I'm a bit nervous.
35:37In the wake of such a profound loss,
35:40the anger and frustration is impossible to ignore.
35:44He's taken my best friend's life,
35:46and he's out on bail walking round,
35:48and he could be talking to any other girls
35:50who are none the wiser about what's just happened in his life.
35:55So, yeah, I was really angry.
35:59He's moved on, got away with that,
36:01killed his two children, got away with that,
36:03killed Evie, got away with that.
36:04God, I'm good. I'm good at this.
36:06Yeah, this is my life.
36:08But what he doesn't know is that actually
36:11the toxicology in Evie's body is looked at,
36:14and there's concerns about the level of drugs.
36:16The report stated that the opiate levels in Evie's blood
36:19were the equivalent of taking 20 Tramadol.
36:22Any more than two would make somebody unwell.
36:25Police now know what caused Evie's death,
36:28but they still need to find proof of who caused it.
36:32It's been nine months since Evie was poisoned.
36:36And Monaghan is moving on.
36:40He always had a big wallet full of cash,
36:43and always seemed to...
36:45Well, if he wanted something, he could just pay for it.
36:48It was never, like, a little bit.
36:50It was always a big amount of money.
36:54But he was constantly with everybody.
36:56Do they need to lend some money?
36:58I was like, there's just something not right.
37:01There's something not sitting right.
37:04It started to seem more shady and shadier as the time went on.
37:10As Monaghan becomes more elusive,
37:13he's quick to offer an explanation to his friends.
37:17He'd go and see his solicitor and go missing for a few days.
37:20So that used to, like, be on a Monday,
37:22Monday to a Thursday,
37:24and then he'd be back on a Friday.
37:26And he'd be like, oh, we've been a week.
37:28I've been working.
37:30But then, as it went on and went on,
37:33that's how it more come out with seeing the solicitor.
37:35Oh, I had to stay in the cells for a few days for questioning,
37:38and then you'd ask why or what you'd be in question for.
37:41I was suspicious.
37:46Lee's suspicions grow following an argument at the pub
37:50when a woman, a friend of Monaghan's ex-partner,
37:54mentions having heard about Evie's death.
37:57She was calling him a murderer.
37:58That was my first real, proper inkling
38:01with everything into Evie and the other two children.
38:05She told him a murderer.
38:06She told him, you've killed your kids, you've killed your ex,
38:09you've done this, and you will get what's coming to you.
38:11And then you start thinking, well,
38:13these accusations have come out, so many of them.
38:17There's got to be some truth here.
38:20He didn't come across as dangerous to anybody.
38:23He didn't.
38:23He was just a young lad.
38:25He didn't pose any threat to nobody.
38:28You know, he just seemed happy, sometimes sad,
38:32because obviously of what had happened to him.
38:34But the rest of the time, he was just having a drink
38:36and having a laugh with everybody.
38:39But we were all dragged under an illusion.
38:45Sue is surprised to learn the truth about her friend Monaghan
38:48when she's visited by the police.
38:50They said to me then about children.
38:53And they said, do not let him anywhere near children.
38:57He is not allowed in the vicinity of children.
39:00And I'm like, why?
39:02And the police asked me, what did I know about his children?
39:05I said, well, I knew that they'd passed away.
39:07I said, but it was like six years ago.
39:09I said, no, I said, for a genetic, something genetic that they died of.
39:14The police are closing in.
39:17Detectors are then getting the best experts they can find.
39:21And we talk about 12 experts from a wide range of disciplines
39:25to just look at not just Evie's death,
39:29but also the death of the two children.
39:31As part of the investigation,
39:33officers examined Jordan's phone
39:36and accessed his WhatsApp messages.
39:40And they uncovered clear evidence
39:42of him ordering and purchasing the drugs
39:46that were later found in Evie's body after her death.
39:51This evidence strongly indicates
39:54that Jordan was not only buying the drugs,
39:57but also administering them to Evie.
40:05Jordan is then re-arrested
40:07and he's charged with the murder of his two children and of Evie.
40:13In October 2021,
40:16Jordan Monaghan appears at Preston Crown Court.
40:19The friends who thought they knew him appear in court too.
40:24Made me sick.
40:26That I'd been in association with somebody that could do something that evil
40:31and not flinch.
40:35Not flinch.
40:36You know when you look at someone and you can see that they're sorry?
40:40He didn't look like that in court.
40:42And he was sat at the back row.
40:44So he was sat at the very back.
40:46He was just slouched like he knew what was coming anywhere.
40:49He knew he was already going to stay in prison for the majority of his life.
40:53He knew he was going to get found guilty.
40:55He knew his time was up of the lies that he'd been telling.
41:00He felt like he'd been tricked.
41:02Whoever this person was,
41:03it was just a big cover-up and a big fake
41:05and all these laughable times and memories I've had
41:09weren't even real.
41:10How can he stand there
41:12and be sad
41:15over Evie's death
41:17and when the anniversary of her birthday was,
41:20be sad
41:21and show us all pictures of how much he loved her and all the rest of it
41:25when apparently he did this to her.
41:29And leaving all us lot thinking everything was fine,
41:33that a man could do something like that,
41:36that's just...
41:38It's insane to me
41:39that somebody can do that.
41:42During the trial,
41:43a linguistics expert presents evidence on the suicide note.
41:47The particular thing they asked me about in court
41:49was a phone call that Jordan told me about.
41:51He said he'd had a number of phone calls when Evie died,
41:53the night Evie died,
41:55that he'd missed on his phone
41:56and he was working in a warehouse.
41:58And then when he eventually answered,
42:00they told him that Evie had died.
42:02In my eyes,
42:03if someone roamed me and told me
42:05my girlfriend had died,
42:06that you made out your love so dearly,
42:08he'd have dropped everything at work
42:10and gone straight home.
42:11He finished his shift and then went home.
42:12I thought, well, he's getting sent down.
42:15It's got this serious.
42:18Like I said,
42:19because nobody ever spoke about it for a long time,
42:21nobody knew how serious it was.
42:24Yeah, at that point,
42:25I thought, yeah, he's going down.
42:32Jordan Monaghan is found guilty of murdering
42:35his 21-month-old son,
42:37his one-month-old daughter
42:39and 23-year-old Evie Adams.
42:42I mean, people said,
42:44bring back Hanging.
42:46I don't want anything like that.
42:48I want him to be tortured every day in prison
42:50like he tortured her.
42:53I hate him,
42:54but I don't want him to die.
42:55I don't want him to take the coward's way out
42:57and commit suicide.
42:58I want him to pay for exactly what he's done
43:00to them babies and to Evie.
43:03Because if he takes the coward's way out
43:05and kills himself,
43:06then that's just what he wants to do.
43:08That's his choice.
43:09And no,
43:10he shouldn't have a choice anymore.
43:12Evie didn't have a choice,
43:13so why does he get a choice?
43:18Jordan Monaghan is sentenced to life imprisonment
43:21with a minimum term of 40 years.
43:25There's no doubt this guy,
43:27had he not been arrested for the murder of Evie,
43:30would have gone on
43:31and perpetrated the exact same type of behaviours
43:34that Evie fell foul of.
43:36Definitely don't feel like I've got justice for Evie.
43:39Never will have.
43:39Never will do.
43:42The word monster,
43:44I don't think that even touches the sides with this.
43:46He's much worse than that.
43:54Evie's family and friends
43:56are left to pick up the pieces,
43:59but the scars remain.
44:00I mean, it's an hindsight now,
44:02but we had a chance
44:03and I took her away.
44:05You know,
44:07gone away, you know,
44:09abroad or something for a few months
44:13just to get her away from him,
44:14but
44:16it's just one of them things, isn't it?
44:17You live and learn.
44:20I just wish I could have picked her up,
44:22thrown her over my shoulder
44:22and took her away
44:23and just took her out of the situation
44:26because she just didn't deserve it at all.
44:30Jordan Monaghan
44:31completely took over her life
44:33and then ended it.
44:34And tragically,
44:35despite the family's love,
44:36the best efforts,
44:38they couldn't have done anything
44:39to change that.
44:45Bernard and his family
44:47have created a memorial garden
44:49to celebrate Evie's memory,
44:52providing a special place
44:54for her daughter to enjoy.
44:57When it's warm,
44:58she'll sit there.
44:59She'll sit in the sleeper.
45:02Hey, Mum,
45:03I'm doing this today
45:04and doing that.
45:06And say,
45:07Grandad,
45:08what, love?
45:10Your mum's just been watching me.
45:12You know,
45:12when a butterfly goes past,
45:14I'm like...
45:16She lives to her daughter now.
45:19She's doing amazing.
45:20She'd be so proud of her.
45:21The Evie I remember
45:22is fun, loving,
45:24always dancing,
45:25always singing,
45:27get up and
45:27on karaoke in an empty room.
45:30You know,
45:31it's just funny.
