00:00this accent i catch a lot of strays i'll be walking around manhattan and i'll go y'all
00:04have a good afternoon and they go we don't want ice in our neighborhood i remember my friend
00:08jared weeks sitting next to me good he saw you come on stage he goes oh i love this guy
00:14yeah yeah no it was a uh it was a hot show for sure yeah so for those who don't
00:19know we're
00:19talking about kid rock's comedy jam in nashville at the ryman and uh yeah that was fun i got to
00:25meeting which was uh which was really cool um and i was hoping he was gonna you know but he
00:30told a
00:31fun story before the before the show started about those helicopters coming by his place which was a
00:36lot of fun but yeah it was a cool event yeah well uh good to see you man you were
00:41on that show you've
00:42done a late night tv show you've played shows with naper godsey and now and now you're with me so
00:47your
00:47your stock is is clicking downward just a little bit but we'll try to i'll give you a nice plug
00:52here
00:52for uh the royal oak music theater coming up on september 11th of course the day of comedy
00:57on september 11th yeah you always got to do a comedy show on that day for sure uh and it's
01:04such
01:05a great day to fly as well so what a blessing i'll be uh i'll be flying in that day
01:10but yeah i'm excited
01:12to come back i uh i've done uh caesar's palace twice in detroit uh i uh which you know i
01:19don't know
01:19how many people can say that got my netflix special out that's nostalgic um which is uh the
01:25numbers are rocking on that so excited to come to royal oak uh music theater i uh great place for
01:31comedy and so uh yeah man looking forward to it yeah and you you uh you released nostalgic on my
01:36birthday so thank you that was like a nice birthday gift yeah yeah yeah i did i looked long and
01:42hard i
01:42was trying to find when your in your birthday landed on the perfect spot so i was like let's go
01:46ahead and
01:47follow through with it just do it on that on that day right there yeah i appreciate that no i'm
01:53still
01:53baffled by that yeah that's right yeah you were there at the thing you know why because they never
01:57tell you who's going to be there yeah yeah and another thing i mean this could not sound any worse
02:02there's there's no worse thing than when you uh talk to somebody and you have to tell them you
02:08were on a show but i do want the listeners to know uh i mean i put my whole foot
02:13into that audience
02:14i mean i ripped them you did uh and and i was the only one that was pretty much doing
02:18straight up comedy uh we had some wild acts uh i didn't come off the stage into the crowd
02:24just jokes and uh and i and i ripped them pretty good the fact that you didn't remember me as
02:29wild uh but we'll just uh if it helps your ego then we'll just ride that lightning
02:35no i'll tell you what man no you were great that night as a matter of fact uh you headlined
02:39so i mean
02:40there you go there yep yep closed it closed it out for the evening followed some some very funny
02:45guys a good friend of mine chris porter had a killer killer set so yeah it's always it's always a
02:51fun
02:52night with those guys i'm excited to be in nashville uh just a cool city overall um honestly so yeah
02:57yeah was that that wasn't the first time you played the rhyming was it no no that uh i've been
03:02there a few times i've been lucky to come through there what a cool joint um just right off of
03:07broadway there uh so yeah it's always fun to do the rhyming with that kind of the all the wood
03:13and
03:13the pew kind of feeling it's it's an interesting joint it's definitely historical yeah i went with
03:17rock the one time and we saw brad williams there oh sick yeah brad's great man yeah it's a great
03:24place for any type of i mean you know of course music is what made its name but also a
03:29killer place
03:29to watch comedy now you're gonna be i don't know if you want to talk about this but you're gonna
03:33be
03:33relocating down there what's the reason for that i had a kid man just trying to you know it's gonna
03:39be my first real decision that i'm making for the family here as a comedian and as a you know
03:44an
03:44entertainer you can be a little selfish in your journey and uh so i came up to new york city
03:49to
03:49kind of prove it to myself and prove to other people uh that i'm funny everywhere because sometimes
03:54when you have a southern accent they try to put you in a box and so i had to show
03:58them that i crush
03:59crowds regardless of where they're at so i came up here i did that for a year and a half
04:03i work at
04:04the cellar a good bit so now i'm ready to put my roots down i grew up 90 miles south
04:08of nashville
04:09um and nashville's right in the middle of the country good place to travel out of there's a reason
04:14uh why you know 75 of the tour buses come out of nashville it's a pretty central location yeah i
04:21see that tour bus uh place it's uh north of nashville if i'm not mistaken i ride along uh
04:25yeah five or something like that i drive by it yeah so i've never been to alabama before actually
04:31i take that back uh one time i was in prospect tennessee and i missed the exit so i did
04:35go into
04:35alabama once but uh but why why why did you go up to new york just because of the comedy
04:41thing i mean
04:41it doesn't sound like a place that a guy from alabama would want to go i mean i grew up
04:45in buffalo
04:46and i don't want to go to new york no i get that i mean it was truly just a
04:50business move i mean could
04:51you imagine if i said it was for quality of life i mean that wouldn't make any sense
04:55but like i said when you have this accent in life on stage people try to put you in a
05:00box all the
05:01time they think they got you pretty pinned so okay i lived in denver for nine years and then i
05:06moved
05:06here just to show people that i'm you know i'm not up there doing some you know pitchfork and overall
05:12type comedy i'm like bill burr raised in the woods your boy's moving up there i've got a certain pace
05:18i'm not just talking about things that somebody who might have grown up in a metropolitan area wouldn't
05:23understand um you know and so i just wanted to show my range and so came here to the cellar
05:29put
05:29out you know 20 25 clips that have gone viral um so it was just a business trip nobody told
05:35me to come
05:36here the industry didn't tell me to come here this was just to prove to people because i know you
05:40know
05:40i mean you got to have a little chip on your shoulder in comedy and i know that you know
05:44i'm i'm not just
05:45like some slow cocky you know talking like hay bale kicking comment comedian and new york was was
05:51a way for me to prove that yeah it sounds it sounds you you brought that up a couple times
05:55so it sounds
05:55like maybe at the maybe at the beginning of your career that was you you kind of were you labeled
05:59as that or yeah yeah well i mean it's you know like i start off my act by kind of
06:04this this accent
06:05a lot of people try to do things with it i mean i i say it in my act i
06:10catch a lot of strays
06:11i'll be walking around manhattan and i'll go y'all have a good afternoon and they go we don't
06:15want ice in our neighborhood you know it's and so it's you know i am a southern comic i am
06:21a country
06:21dude but that's not my whole story i've got the type of comedy that people from anywhere um can enjoy
06:28it's not like i'm going to get up there and do a bit about gardening squash and lose the crowd
06:32you know it's it's pretty down the middle stuff for everybody so i i guess i'm a little uh you
06:38know
06:38conscious and self-conscious of that so i always try to let audiences know because somebody will
06:42come in they'll be listening to this and they'll hear my accent and they'll go oh that ain't for me
06:46and it's like no big dog it might be uh it might be you just got to give me a
06:51minute yeah yeah that's
06:52right so i i usually interview bands that's that's like kind of like the the the the people i interview
06:58the most and i ask them sometimes like what is it like to drop a record so what is it
07:01like to drop
07:01a netflix special well you learn why people complain about press tours sometimes i've never
07:09done a real one and so it's endless press yeah uh and it's a good thing and it's and it's
07:15an
07:15absolutely exhausting thing um but it's great i mean you get a punch in the arm this netflix special
07:21is doing great it was in the top 10 the first week the numbers are killing just in the comedy
07:26world humble is the word i'm not allowed to get on instagram and do what i want to do after
07:30a
07:30couple cups of coffee and tell everybody that my netflix special is doing better than 90 of your
07:36favorite comedians uh you just got to kind of play it close to the vest but the special is killing
07:41it
07:41uh people enjoy it it's extremely relatable um i'm not wasting your time there's no real drop off
07:47in the 57 minutes i build throughout the set and by the end of it we're to the moon so
07:52it's something
07:53i'm i'm really proud of it i mean my my most daunting task now and i've got a good jump
07:58on it is to
07:58come up with something even better because the theater tour like when i come through royal oak
08:03music theater that'll all be a brand new 100 new hour uh with uh new stuff i'll be talking about
08:09so that's what's next on the agenda yeah sometimes i ask the bands i go what's harder uh making the
08:13record or talking about it so i guess yeah no you're exactly right you're exactly right yeah so um
08:20have you been to how many waffle houses have you been to man it'd be pretty uh on the spectrum
08:27if i
08:28had a real number but uh it's quite a bit i mean in the thousands i mean i've been going
08:34to waffle house
08:34since i was a babe like my entire my entire life it was my grand my great grandfather uh it
08:41was his
08:42favorite place that's kind of where i fell in love with it it was the only place he would eat
08:45out to
08:46eat like go out to eat because he could watch him cook it um and he wanted that he wanted
08:50to watch
08:51there is no hiding inside of a waffle house you get to watch that whole meal get made and it's
08:56you
08:56know quality products you know it's real eggs no eggs out of a carton you got real potatoes um
09:02so yeah it's a diner that uh that i love i miss i'm excited to get back down towards it
09:07now yeah
09:08because my wife whenever we travel she wants to go to cracker barrel or walmart and they're all the
09:12same but she wants to see she wants to see ones in different cities it's like is it the same
09:17thing
09:17with you yeah yeah yeah i mean it's not to see it in a different city it's really just it's
09:23what i
09:23prefer to eat it's one of the more consistent meals you know and this is what when i talk about
09:27waffle
09:28house and it's sometimes people i feel like from other places they hear me they're like yeah of course
09:32you know this is a homer talking about anthony bourdain has a has an episode where he went to
09:37waffle house and he wants to root against it and he can't he ends up being like waffle house is
09:43a
09:43special place and he highlights some things that really uh that i really love about it so i always
09:48tell people you don't have to take my word for it go on youtube watch the anthony bourdain
09:52waffle house episode and watch a man that wanted to root against it have his mind changed in real time
09:58now a few weeks ago you're also out there with um with with seth rollins uh was that the first
10:03time
10:03you met him first time i've met seth rollins i'm gonna tell you something about me i'm not a
10:10wrestling fan and i had no idea that seth rollins had the draw that he has my messages went nuts
10:16i mean they were like i can't believe you're hanging out with seth rollins he's the coolest dude ever
10:20i go yeah he's pretty nice uh you know i i didn't know anything about seth rollins definitely knew about
10:27uh i was on that same show with uh menteo uh the linebacker from notre dame definitely knew a little
10:33bit about his history but uh didn't know a lot about seth rollins didn't not a wrestling not a
10:39wrestling guy i'm one of those that that little group that in like 1991 i found out that jake the
10:44snake was not being was not a real wrestler and i jumped ship so did you see uh at the
10:52end of the
10:52comedy jam in nashville did you see that monstrous dude stand up and walk towards the stage that was
10:59braun stroman oh my goodness did you see no i did not no i never i did not see him
11:06yeah he's
11:06friends with porter as well and i met him before and i've known chris for a few years and i
11:11ended up
11:11hooking up with him later on that night and then uh and then i took my friend jared and uh
11:15him and
11:16zach from shinedown did his tv show the next day he's got this show called everything on the menu
11:20where they eat everything on the menu oh wow my gosh no that sounds like a lot of fun well
11:27yeah yeah
11:28maybe he could get you on this show maybe i can get you on that show one time yeah yeah
11:32yeah that
11:33i mean that that's what would have to help your ego even more now you're getting me on shows
11:37i mean this has gotten this is crazy i apologize you know my friend jared goes i love this guy
11:44i'd
11:44never seen you before so that's i apologize and no no it's all good it's all good no but now
11:50i'm
11:50starting to see you all over the place you're popping up in my feed and everything but uh the running
11:54hot tour royal oak music theater on september 11th of course your netflix special is out right now
11:59called nostalgic i watch that by the way you shot that uh in your hometown it was where did you
12:04have
12:04friends and family there or anything like that oh yeah i mean for sure i mean i tell a story
12:09about
12:10calling the house it's a pretty viral bit from the special about how you'd have to talk to a parent
12:14before you call the house and i reference this guy jeff turner i mean jeff turner's real name is
12:19tom turner and his daughter is hannah turner and she was my high school sweetheart and they were in
12:25attendance for sure you know stuff like that i don't go to coffee shops and make up things uh you
12:30know i i see things i say things so all that stuff comes from a real place um so yeah
12:36family and
12:37friends fans birmingham's was a nice central location you could drive in from atlanta you could
12:43drive in from different parts and it wasn't too far of a drive in the lyric theater and birmingham
12:47is top notch so it all turned out great yeah do you know the guys from uh brother caner from
12:51there
