00:01A former director of the Sabah State Water Department has been sentenced to 96 years in jail
00:06and fined over 284 million ringgit after being found guilty of laundering more than 45 million ringgit a decade ago.
00:14The Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted Awang Muhammad Tahir Muhammad Talib, aged 63,
00:21on 12 charges under the Anti-Money Laundering Act for offences committed between October and November 2016.
00:28Judge Abu Bakar Manat sentenced him to 8 years jail for each of the 12 offences to run concurrently,
00:34while the fines, totaling 284.3 million ringgit, will run separately.
00:39A default sentence of 78 months jail applies if the fines are not paid.
00:44The court heard that over 23 million ringgit was found at his office,
00:47more than 13 million inside two of his cars, and over 8 million at his residence.
00:52Luxury items including watches, handbags and cars were also seized.
00:56The judge said the accused had used his position as department director to run a centralised collection scheme,
01:02and that the evidence was overwhelming, yet the accused failed to explain where the money came from.
01:08However, Awang Muhammad Tahir's wife, Fauzia Piyut, and former deputy director Lim Lambeng were both acquitted of all charges.
01:16The court has allowed a stay of the jail sentence and fine payments pending an appeal to the high court.
