00:16The United States has reportedly lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones during its war with Iran,
00:24and the losses are raising serious questions about America's drone fleet.
00:29According to a Washington Post report citing three U.S. officials familiar with the matter,
00:35those 45 Reapers represent roughly one quarter of the U.S. military's pre-war inventory.
00:42The MQ-9 Reaper has been one of America's most important unmanned aircraft,
00:48used extensively for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strikes.
00:54And during the Iran conflict, its role has become even more critical.
00:59But the losses are mounting.
01:01Before the war, the United States had roughly 185 Reapers across the Air Force and Marine Corps.
01:08By May, a senior Air Force official told Congress that the number of remaining Air Force Reapers had already fallen
01:16to around 135.
01:18And with additional losses since then, the overall fleet is now estimated to be somewhere around 140 to 145 aircraft.
01:28The financial cost is also enormous.
01:31Depending on configuration, a single MQ-9 can cost between $30 and $50 million.
01:38That means 45 lost aircraft represent a potential cost of more than $1.3 billion for the Reapers alone.
01:47But not every drone was necessarily shot down.
01:52U.S. officials have indicated that some Reapers were lost after operators lost communications links with the aircraft.
01:59Others were reportedly destroyed during attacks on regional military bases.
02:04The drones have been heavily used for surveillance and strike missions,
02:08including operations around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
02:13But the Reaper has a major vulnerability.
02:16It is relatively slow and operates at lower altitudes, making it more exposed to sophisticated air defense systems.
02:24The losses also create a major replacement problem for the Pentagon.
02:29Production of the MQ-9A Reaper for the U.S. military ended in 2025 after the Air Force stopped placing
02:38new orders.
02:39That means America cannot simply place a massive new order and immediately replace the aircraft being lost.
02:47The manufacturer, General Atomics, reportedly has enough existing parts for only a small number of additional airframes.
02:55There are also older aircraft that could potentially be refurbished.
03:00The company has offered the newer MQ-9B platform as another option.
03:05But rebuilding the fleet will take time.
03:07And that may be the biggest problem.
03:10The Pentagon is increasingly moving toward cheaper, more easily replaceable drones that can be produced in large numbers.
03:18But developing and deploying that next generation of systems is a multi-year process.
03:23So the question is no longer simply how many Reapers America has lost.
03:29It is whether the United States can replace them quickly enough while continuing a high-intensity air campaign.
03:36For now, the reported loss of at least 45 MQ-9 Reapers highlights a growing challenge for the U.S.
03:44military, maintaining its drone advantage when the battlefield is becoming increasingly dangerous for unmanned aircraft.
