00:00:01Four extraordinary worlds steeped in tradition
00:00:05are opening their doors
00:00:06Hopefully it's not haunted
00:00:07to four groups of young Brits
00:00:10I'm a bit nervous now
00:00:11ready to take a giant leap out of their comfort zones
00:00:14I'm just a 24-7 princess
00:00:16What happens when a generation raised online
00:00:20All we care about is how we look
00:00:22I've really rotted my brain from TikTok
00:00:24come face to face with regimes built on no-nonsense rules
00:00:28How long I've got to spend in silence?
00:00:30Actually more than 10 hours
00:00:33Where loyalty and principles really count
00:00:36You had your blazer done off in my school
00:00:37You was a weirdo
00:00:38I don't want to do this anymore
00:00:40Will this unique clash of values
00:00:43Whatever I was expecting this is 50, 100% more
00:00:46Welcome to hell
00:00:46And cultures
00:00:49Lead to conflict
00:00:50Everybody can stand right here and shut the f*** up
00:00:53Or lasting change
00:00:54There comes a point where it's not fun and cool anymore
00:00:57And after each unforgettable week
00:01:00It was amazing
00:01:01We're top of the world right now
00:01:02Will either side ever be the same again?
00:01:05I think I've just found three friends
00:01:07It's been the most funniest, strangest, abnormal week of my life
00:01:13I feel like I've had an epiphany
00:01:17This time
00:01:18Hello
00:01:18Hello
00:01:19Three larger-than-life lads who love to party
00:01:22We do tend to drink silly sometimes
00:01:24Join an ancient religious brotherhood
00:01:26In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit
00:01:30Dedicated to a life of simplicity and service to others
00:01:34It isn't big money or big spending that will give them happiness
00:01:37Can young men used to pleasing themselves
00:01:40It's torture
00:01:41I haven't been up by 30 in ages
00:01:44Obey a rigid routine
00:01:46Yes
00:01:46Of silence
00:01:49Prayer
00:01:50And hard work
00:01:52I want to be able to grow up a bit faster
00:01:54And could mixing hedonists with holy men
00:02:00Deliver some miraculous results
00:02:02This is today's special
00:02:03I'm made by myself
00:02:04Yeah, enjoy it
00:02:05It makes you think more outside of the world that you live in
00:02:07Because it's not just you
00:02:08I feel like my mind is
00:02:18The Carmelite Priory, Oxford
00:02:21Home to a nine-strong sacred order
00:02:24Who've ditched distractions to lead a spiritual life
00:02:29Life in a monastery entails difficulties, struggles and challenges
00:02:34Our whole life is prayer
00:02:38It's about to open its cloistered doors
00:02:42To three party-loving lads more interested in having it large than the Holy Father
00:02:48If there's any shaving of the hair involved, spin this back round and I'm going home
00:02:52Because this can't come off
00:02:5323-year-old barber, Max
00:02:57Who lives in Manchester
00:02:59Hi, mate
00:03:00Good
00:03:01We do tend to drink silly sometimes
00:03:03When the first one's gone down, it's sort of inevitable, I think
00:03:05Can never say no to a night out
00:03:08I guess we're doing it again then, are we?
00:03:10I think I've diagnosed myself with FOMO, to be honest
00:03:12We do this every week, mate
00:03:14We're veterans
00:03:14When you see everyone around you having a good time
00:03:16It's impossible to stop
00:03:18Do you want more or less?
00:03:19You know what, mate?
00:03:19You've given me a pint
00:03:20He's always the life and soul of any party
00:03:24I would describe myself as the loudest in the group
00:03:27There's not really a time when I'm not speaking unless I'm asleep
00:03:30But he rarely stops to see the world through another's eyes
00:03:33I've been quite successful for myself in the past year or so
00:03:36And do live a good life
00:03:37But I think it would be good for me to get out of my comfort zone
00:03:42No clue what to expect
00:03:43Do you think they're trained in, like, jiu-jitsu and stuff?
00:03:46Too many boozy nights out have caused 23-year-old Luke from Hemel Hempstead to take his eye off the
00:03:53ball
00:03:53I could be very unmotivated
00:03:55I could throw away my to-do list
00:03:57And then just go and do something else
00:03:59Like going out to a rave
00:04:01Owner of a fledgling fashion brand
00:04:04All his profits are currently ploughed into his partying
00:04:07Spending £800 on a night out
00:04:09You just have that feeling that wants to kind of, you know, throw your money away left, right and centre
00:04:14When it comes to looking sharp, Luke doesn't care about the price tag
00:04:19Here we've got the Louis Vuitton skater shoes
00:04:22They come in at about £1,000
00:04:24I feel like I just want to live my life
00:04:27And enjoy the time I've got while I'm young
00:04:32We're getting more and more into the countryside, aren't we?
00:04:37Genuinely never been in a farm
00:04:3924-year-old Glaswegian Alan is a personal trainer who doesn't know when to stop
00:04:44In terms of during the week, I would say I'm pretty responsible
00:04:47On Saturday, I do turn into a complete degenerate
00:04:50He has two loves, keeping fit and the opposite sex
00:04:53Hello, guys
00:04:54How are you?
00:04:55Welcome to the session
00:04:57I'm a lover boy at heart
00:05:01Whether it's chasing women or knocking back chasers
00:05:04Alan's always after the next thrill
00:05:06I'm very much like you only live once
00:05:10So I got it tattooed on me
00:05:12The constant chase of dopamine
00:05:15I never sit down improperly
00:05:17I'm at one with my feelings because I don't really know how to
00:05:20But he's reaching party burnout
00:05:22You'll love the lifestyle
00:05:24You'll love that crazy lifestyle
00:05:25Listen, I've had enough of the fast life
00:05:28I've had enough of the girls
00:05:29I've had enough of the nightclubs
00:05:30I want a bit peace
00:05:36These three hedonists may be looking for inner peace
00:05:39But are they prepared for this much peace?
00:05:42Being a friar is a 24-hour, seven days a week life
00:05:48You don't clock in and clock out
00:05:50When it comes to devotion
00:05:52This 800-year-old religious order doesn't do things by halves
00:05:56You forgo marriage and family and children
00:05:59You don't have a bank account
00:06:01You don't have your own rooms
00:06:02Anything that you have you share
00:06:04The brotherhood follows a rigid routine
00:06:07Prayer three times a day
00:06:08With work and quiet contemplation in between
00:06:12The life of a friar is a life of simplicity
00:06:16Lived in community and prayer
00:06:19The three vows we make are the vows of obedience, chastity and poverty
00:06:29Three vows which are likely to concern the lads
00:06:33The no hair, the praying, the silence worries me
00:06:37You can't exist in Manchester, in a flat, living a high life your whole life
00:06:42Max's mum hopes the experience will help him step out of his bubble
00:06:46And I hope you just broaden your horizons on what other people think and feel
00:06:51I think it will help you grow, I really do
00:06:53I'm ****ing my pants now
00:06:57A life without no money can be very difficult for someone who has lived that life with money
00:07:03Luke's business partner Marcus believes a week of poverty will change Luke's excessive mindset
00:07:08He must certainly needs humbling and just be an opportunity to see how other people do live, you know
00:07:16And you don't have it gifted to them
00:07:18You thrive of girls' attention
00:07:20In terms of having an obedience to chastity, I've definitely two foot gone
00:07:25Sorry, Mr Monk
00:07:29Before they get div out, it's time to get something out of their system
00:07:34Yeah, I think a couple of fucks could definitely come out
00:07:36So maybe I have to say, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck
00:07:40Hey, here we are
00:07:44Fucking, oh, fucking hell, it's massive
00:07:46It's definitely not a hut
00:07:48Looks like Max hasn't got it all out just yet
00:07:52Look at this Isaac
00:07:54He ain't living in no poverty
00:07:56Hopefully it's not haunted though
00:07:58I'm scared of ghosts
00:08:00It does look a little bit scary
00:08:03Like many young people
00:08:04They may be distracted with social media
00:08:07They want to party
00:08:10Go out with friends
00:08:12There's more of an outwardness to them
00:08:15The thing I probably do want to learn most
00:08:17Is seeing what life is like from someone else's perspective
00:08:21I maybe turn a bit of a blind eye to other people's lifestyles that aren't like mine
00:08:26The thing I hope to learn this week is to take life a little bit more serious
00:08:32I'm still young but I feel like I still have a lot more maturing to do
00:08:36I think with my way still
00:08:38Maybe the toilet don't have you tell me but
00:08:41Yes, boys, you good?
00:08:42I think I've over-packed a bit
00:08:44How are you? How you doing, mate? I'm Luke
00:08:46How do we get in?
00:08:47Just going straight through that door
00:08:48Yeah?
00:08:49Alright, you go first
00:08:50Their holy hosts believe a week of God-given guidance will put these modern men on the right path
00:08:57We have high hopes that this will impact on them positively
00:09:02How? We don't know
00:09:06I suppose they may think that we are strange beings of some sort
00:09:13Hello
00:09:15Still to come
00:09:16How long have I got to spend in silence?
00:09:18Actually, more than ten hours
00:09:20The lads struggle to stick to the rules
00:09:24We'll be keeping your phones for you
00:09:26And face a frugal fashion challenge
00:09:30Your flies are undone
00:09:39Three young hedonists are swapping parties for prayers to spend a week at a remote religious order
00:09:45We've got a big week to go, mate
00:09:47Can the friars help them tame their wild ways?
00:09:51Hello
00:09:52Hello, lovely to meet you
00:09:54Yeah, I'm Father Alex
00:09:55Welcome to the Calm Life Priory
00:09:56It seems very, like, quiet in here
00:09:59Yeah, we do try to maintain some kind of quiet
00:10:03I'm normally very loud, so I'm going to keep the decibels low as I can
00:10:07We are nine friars in the Priory
00:10:11And we come from all sorts of backgrounds
00:10:14So you have three from India
00:10:16Five from Nigeria
00:10:19And one from Ireland
00:10:25Oh, wow
00:10:26Good
00:10:26Hello, everyone
00:10:27Hello, hello, how are you?
00:10:30Just here, lovely to meet you
00:10:31Luke, Max and Alan will be expected to follow the friars' strict routine
00:10:36Oh, do we stand up?
00:10:38Yes, I will
00:10:39Starting with the communal meal
00:10:44Bless us, O Lord, and this like you, which you are about to receive from your bounty, through Christ our
00:10:49Lord
00:10:49Amen
00:10:50Bon Appetit
00:10:51Merci
00:10:51Thank you
00:10:54As they get stuck into their first supper, Luke's got a burning question
00:10:59I've seen in the movies that monks are known for, like, karate and stuff
00:11:05Do you do, like, jiu-jitsu or karate?
00:11:08I've watched the film Bulletproof Monk, that's all I know, and it's the ones that do, like, flying 360 kicks
00:11:13and stuff, they're like, kung fu pandas
00:11:17The monks in the films, they wear the robes, but they're like, very, uh, no
00:11:23These friars are more interested in a higher purpose than high kicks
00:11:28I feel like the thing I will struggle with the most is following rules
00:11:31Having to do what someone else does on their terms could be quite difficult for me
00:11:37The ancient Carmelite order believe in service to others
00:11:41And spread the holy word through teaching, hospitality and acts of charity
00:11:46So, what is the daily routine we're going to be going through this week?
00:11:51We start prayers at 6 and then we conclude at about 7.30
00:11:59I haven't gotten out of bed until, like, 10am for the last year
00:12:05We go for prayers again at 12 and in the evenings, we go again at 5 for prayer
00:12:11At about 10, we maintain some silence, you know, to the next day
00:12:16Everything we do, whether it's work, whether it's prayer, we do it in silence
00:12:21On sort of average, how long do you, like, spend in silence?
00:12:26Actually, more than 10 hours
00:12:29Silence here can be imposing
00:12:32But it's also so wonderful because the silence gives you the opportunity to listen to your heart beat
00:12:39Then other times you walk, you also observe some silence
00:12:43Oh, shit, oh
00:12:47Rubbish, that
00:12:48Max will need to swap cursing for self-control to follow the friars' rules
00:12:53Any situation where I have to be quiet, a big problem for me
00:12:56I just get an urge to make a noise, I don't know, maybe there's something wrong with me
00:13:01This silence is a silence of love
00:13:04It's a silence of supporting you
00:13:06No-one wants to sit in silence, it's boring
00:13:11The vow of silence gets a thumbs down
00:13:15Are we going to get these?
00:13:16It looks like, er, like Star Wars, like Anakin and that, Luke Skywalker
00:13:20Well, give me the black one
00:13:21Oh, yeah, the black one, I'll have black one
00:13:23But the holy couture gets a thumbs up
00:13:25They were almost as if they were, like, Jedi's
00:13:29The cloaks, the hoods they were wearing, they were all pretty plight, to be honest with you
00:13:34So this is your place for the weeks
00:13:38Nice
00:13:38Though the simple lodging soon bring the lads back to earth
00:13:41We call our rooms cells
00:13:43Cells
00:13:44It's like the B cells
00:13:46That's where we make spiritual honey
00:13:48Ah
00:13:49Mm-hm
00:13:53We have the holy bible
00:13:56Don't think I've really ever opened a bible
00:13:59Wouldn't really know where to start
00:14:01Look how there's a lot of pages in here
00:14:03I have absolutely no idea what we're going into
00:14:06Which is, one, the beauty, and two, kind of petrifying me
00:14:11And here is a crucifix
00:14:15And if I'm not mistaken, that is Jesus himself
00:14:18Ten hours of the day in silence
00:14:23I'm such a sociable person
00:14:25That way of living is crazy to me
00:14:29Settled in and bedded down
00:14:31It's a rare early night for these regular ravers
00:14:36Getting up for sex in the morning
00:14:38For mass
00:14:39That would be fucking knackered
00:14:41I can't lie
00:14:42I'm going to have to stick by them three vows
00:14:47And I do like going out for fancy dinners
00:14:49Getting new clothes
00:14:50But I think this week
00:14:52It's a time for me to get that out of my head
00:14:55And be a monk
00:14:56The fact that I went to a chapel to meditate in silence
00:14:59With people that I met today
00:15:02Doesn't bode well with me at all
00:15:18The friars' day begins before sunrise
00:15:21The friars' day begins before sunrise
00:15:24Wokey Wokey Alan?
00:15:27Around the time these hard partiers would normally call it a night
00:15:32Recently, I've been quite bad
00:15:34And we've got a lot of fun
00:15:34Rolling in at four in the morning you wake up next day, and you're like why did I do this
00:15:38your month?
00:15:40At six in the morning we gather in the chapel for prayer
00:15:43It's a very meaningful activity and there is joy in doing that I
00:15:53Think the hours of prayer
00:15:57They might find difficult. I'm a church ready. I
00:16:03Don't think you need to be there there the lads will be expected to attend chapel three times a day
00:16:10In the name of father's son the Holy Spirit
00:16:22Prayer time boys this world life changes
00:16:26For he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture father Alex hopes this sacred space
00:16:34will show the lads
00:16:35There's more to life than a big night out
00:16:37My hope is that they will experience prayer and peace and
00:16:45Appreciate their own deeper hunger for a meaningful life
00:16:53All I want to do is talk there's just too much energy building up and the longer I'm sitting in
00:16:58that quiet environment for the longer
00:17:00It wants to come out
00:17:02When we are prayer respect our way of life so it will not be chatting or
00:17:10answering the phone
00:17:12Just to have a certain decorum that it's befitting for such a gathering
00:17:29Would just be me wouldn't it everyone sitting there in silence got father asleep next to me that probably shit
00:17:35him up
00:17:37I don't know how they do it every single day of their life and I'm only one day in
00:17:46Keen to make sure max and the other lads stay focused for the rest of the week just one little
00:17:52rule about
00:17:53phones
00:17:54Father Alex decides to take temptation off the table
00:17:59for this period you're with us will be
00:18:02Keeping your phones for you
00:18:04So do we get them back at night time?
00:18:07No
00:18:08At the end of the week
00:18:09A week without their mobiles will be uncharted territory
00:18:14I spend a lot of time on my phone
00:18:16I'm usually in the routine of always doing something so when I'm not I'll just be sitting in my bed
00:18:21doing scrolling on Tik Tok
00:18:23It's always just next to you to the point that if it buzzes
00:18:27I can't just, you know, don't pick it up
00:18:30After morning prayers the friars tackle their daily chores
00:18:34I'm happy to do whatever. Yeah, I don't mind
00:18:36I think I'm a pretty good bed maker
00:18:38For the priory's brotherhood these basic jobs aren't just about keeping the place clean
00:18:44Keeping ourselves grounded in simplicity and truth. That's what work is
00:18:50They are a daily lesson in humility
00:18:52If a person will not work they should not eat
00:18:56It's that fundamental. It's food for the soul
00:18:59A lesson Father Liam hopes his thrill-seeking guests will take on board
00:19:03Hope there's no spiders up here
00:19:05While Alan and Father Clement tidy the priory's messy attic
00:19:09One day a year they do it, it's the day they pick me
00:19:13My mum would be real happy watching this
00:19:14Luke and Max help Father Noel clear the cobwebs from the guest rooms
00:19:19Training's paid off mum
00:19:22Oh my god look, are they eggs?
00:19:25Fashion brand owner Luke struggles with work-life balance
00:19:28And it's harming his business
00:19:30Are they moving? They're spiders eggs
00:19:33That can't be coffee beans
00:19:35I find it difficult to focus
00:19:36I feel like I've got a very short attention span
00:19:39Eventually I just end up spending a week going out and not actually doing any work
00:19:44Mate this is what you call a thorough deep clean
00:19:47He's hoping his stay at the priory will be the reset he needs
00:19:52I'm very happy, I really enjoy what I do
00:19:55I love it a lot, I love it too much
00:19:58And I'm trying to find a balance, trying to sort myself out really
00:20:01I am about 90% fulfilled with my happiness in life
00:20:05I would love to get more serious
00:20:07I feel like I don't have enough seriousness in my life at the moment
00:20:11And so I get that windowsill
00:20:13Max says he doesn't believe in God, but he does believe in speaking his mind
00:20:17So what idea do you have of anything about Christianity?
00:20:20That Jesus died on the cross and came back to life
00:20:22Yes
00:20:22Since Jesus, who else has come back to life when they die? No one
00:20:26And that's one thing
00:20:27And then my extension took a year to build, but God built the world in seven days
00:20:31How did he do it?
00:20:32Can't build the world in seven days if my extension took a year to build, you know what I mean?
00:20:38Whilst Father Noel lets Max's revelation sink in
00:20:41Right, you ready?
00:20:43Luke's efforts to get more serious haven't lasted long
00:20:46Yes?
00:20:47What do you want, Mush?
00:20:50What's this, knock down ginger?
00:20:52I bet he's in there
00:20:54I want to be able to kind of grow up a bit faster
00:21:00Oh, if you've run off
00:21:03There's a mattress in the way
00:21:04I'm still young, but I feel like I still have a lot more maturing to do
00:21:09Where is he?
00:21:11And I still need to get to that next step
00:21:15I'm the invisible man
00:21:20I remember when they entered the chapel
00:21:22They suddenly put their leg on the other leg and they laugh
00:21:26I very rarely have encountered things like this
00:21:30As night falls, the friars retreat to the library to share their first impressions
00:21:35And plot their next move
00:21:36I was talking to Max and I just asked him
00:21:40Why exactly do you not believe in God?
00:21:42He said because he's an atheist
00:21:43Yes
00:21:45When it comes to the lads' spiritual growth
00:21:48It's clear they've got their work cut out
00:21:51They're not even Christians
00:21:53So they don't subscribe to any religion
00:21:55I was a bit apprehensive how they will fit into our prayer time
00:22:02Especially the meditation
00:22:03I could see that the chapel posed a challenge for them
00:22:07And I noticed that they struggled with that
00:22:11Father Liam has seen it all before
00:22:14He believes the lads need a guiding hand to get on the right path
00:22:17And has a plan to help them
00:22:19Well most people when they come first to the priory they're very uneasy
00:22:24Introduction to the Christian life has to be gradual
00:22:27And that way they begin to genuinely experience a new meaning
00:22:32Something has been sown in them
00:22:35So I just uphold them in prayer and God will do the rest
00:22:44Still to come
00:22:45Alvis Netball
00:22:46Father Liam's master plan begins with a lesson on poverty
00:22:50That looks good doesn't it?
00:22:52It could have been worse, anything could have been worse
00:22:54Silence is your friend
00:22:56But Max struggles to see the light
00:22:58It was dreadful
00:23:00Probably the worst part
00:23:01Of being here
00:23:14The Friars in a remote Oxfordshire priory
00:23:17Are on a mission to persuade three young men to swap last orders
00:23:20For holy orders
00:23:24Family values are beginning to erode in our society
00:23:29And it's even worse with the Gen Z's
00:23:32Social media is not the reality of the life
00:23:36They have a plan to teach them some new life lessons
00:23:40With a rigid schedule of prayers
00:23:41How long was that Father?
00:23:43That was an hour
00:23:44I feel like Shaun of the Dead
00:23:49Fellowship
00:23:50Meditation is a means to prayer
00:23:52I've never meditated before either
00:23:54Do you fall asleep when you do it sometimes?
00:23:56Yes
00:23:58You good at washing up?
00:24:00And chores
00:24:01Alan's got the most important job
00:24:04Today Father Liam has also spotted the perfect opportunity to challenge them on a core karma-like vow
00:24:10Poverty
00:24:12I'm ready, let's go
00:24:14Poverty is very much a vow of simplicity
00:24:17Road trip
00:24:18To shed the many things we may want to possess that then become a burden on that journey to live
00:24:26a simple life
00:24:31Are we going in the shopping centre?
00:24:34When we go shopping, it's expected that a friar will have a mentality of poverty
00:24:40Keeping his mind and his heart close to the basics of life
00:24:47Seeing that the lads didn't bring appropriate work wear for the week
00:24:51He's setting them a thrifty challenge at this charity shop
00:24:54You have a budget of £15 each
00:24:57To get your clothes
00:24:58Let's go in
00:24:59Let's go in
00:24:59Let's go in
00:25:00Let's go in
00:25:01Let's go in
00:25:03It's a long way from what they'd usually spend
00:25:06The clothes that I sort of wear
00:25:08You're not getting an outfit under £100
00:25:10No chance
00:25:10To be honest, we have £15 is mental
00:25:14Shop, till you drop
00:25:15A critical hope
00:25:18Is that they're going to see
00:25:20That it isn't big money
00:25:21Or big spending
00:25:23That'll give them happiness
00:25:24You need to find my pair of trousers now
00:25:26Happiness comes from much simpler human things
00:25:29Are we getting shoes as well?
00:25:31Well, that's up to you
00:25:32It's your shopping
00:25:33You've got your budget
00:25:35Pleasure, possession, power
00:25:37No longer satisfies
00:25:39People are beginning to ask questions
00:25:41And it always begins with
00:25:43I want to know
00:25:45Why am I not feeling satisfied?
00:25:47Normally, Luke spends first and worries later
00:25:50That looks good, that looks good, doesn't it?
00:25:53Usually, going shopping
00:25:55I'll just go out, find something I like
00:25:57If it's good, I'll get it
00:25:59What have you not bought enough of?
00:26:00Mate, everything
00:26:02Actually, I've got enough pants, that's it
00:26:04Right, well, that's a good start thing
00:26:05So I wouldn't be buying them from the chair
00:26:06Sure
00:26:10At home, Luke's nan is losing patience
00:26:13With his expensive tastes
00:26:15You've got to stop spending money
00:26:16Yeah
00:26:17That you haven't got
00:26:17Yeah, I can't be spending the money all the time
00:26:19No
00:26:20It's not good
00:26:20No, I worry that you're going to get into debt
00:26:23Yeah
00:26:23Into bother
00:26:24It's a big worry
00:26:25It's a big worry
00:26:26The most I've dropped on a night out
00:26:27I'd probably say about five, six hundred pounds
00:26:30It's not a nice feeling to wake up to
00:26:32But when you've had a lot of drinks
00:26:34It doesn't seem like a bad decision to do
00:26:37It'll do you good
00:26:38Yeah
00:26:39Not to have the money
00:26:40Then you may learn to stop spending what you haven't got
00:26:43Yeah
00:26:43But spending big on clothes and nights out has meant his brand suffers
00:26:47Usually what goes in my bank comes straight out
00:26:51Shopping on a budget might be a struggle for Luke
00:26:54Ready?
00:26:54Three, two, one
00:26:55But Alan's quids in
00:26:56One
00:26:59Your flies are undone
00:27:02And it might be more Primark than Prada
00:27:06Oh mate
00:27:07But Max has also bagged an outfit
00:27:09Well steel, eh?
00:27:10Oh, you've done it mate
00:27:12Alvis Netball
00:27:14You killed that bro
00:27:15That is good
00:27:16It's really good
00:27:18It's really good
00:27:20You can move in it
00:27:24Comes with a tissue
00:27:26That's disgusting
00:27:28Let's uh
00:27:29Shall we go in there for now, shall we?
00:27:31Yeah
00:27:32Oh, I've come out trumped in that shop
00:27:35That is the bollocks what I've got
00:27:38Meanwhile, Luke is still struggling with the work wear brief
00:27:41We've got a little set on here
00:27:42What do you think about this?
00:27:44You can't wear that when working
00:27:46Why?
00:27:46I mean, if you're out raking leaves tomorrow morning
00:27:49Are you going to wear that?
00:27:50It was definitely an experience that I have not had before
00:27:53It was difficult
00:27:54That would do the job wouldn't it?
00:27:56I mean, it could have been worse
00:27:57The outfit matches
00:27:58It's fine
00:27:59But I'm definitely jealous of Max's outfit
00:28:02So what have you learned
00:28:04From this experience here?
00:28:09By not putting a priority on the exterior
00:28:12It's something interior is being fostered
00:28:15That's the idea, you see
00:28:17These are words that sort of come into my small capacity brain
00:28:21That just come out the other side
00:28:22And I kind of forget
00:28:26Max might have missed the meaning in Father Liam's task
00:28:29But spendthrift Luke has been paying attention
00:28:33Today when I bought out of what I need
00:28:35Is definitely something that I need to learn
00:28:37I'm learning a lot about moderation already
00:28:39And we are literally a day in
00:28:53With one life lesson starting to sink in
00:28:56The lads now face the friar's next challenge
00:28:59Finding serenity
00:29:01I left my coat in there last time
00:29:03So hopefully they'll nick it
00:29:05One of them did say he liked it
00:29:06He's going to be wearing it today at the chapel
00:29:08Our rule tells us to meditate on the word of God day and night
00:29:12An hour is meditation
00:29:14An hour is silence before God
00:29:16It's the place where your weaknesses manifest
00:29:19Where your struggles are manifest
00:29:21So now at this point the community will be entering
00:29:25Into a time of prayer and silence
00:29:30This morning they must take part in a silent meditation
00:29:34Silence is your friend
00:29:37The friars want them to block out distractions
00:29:39And focus on deeper thoughts
00:29:44I wasn't looking forward to it
00:29:46But I didn't think it would be as difficult as it was today
00:29:49But it's more a case of deep sleep
00:29:52I saw like Alan next to me and he was just conked out
00:29:56Max was catching Z's
00:29:58He was conked out as well
00:30:00I noticed there was a wee bit
00:30:02Sort of eyes were closing over
00:30:04Yawning a wee bit
00:30:06I can never accidentally walk up and almost shout at myself
00:30:10And if you can't focus on the person of Jesus
00:30:13Just bear in mind the great spirit of God
00:30:17I sort of woke up with the driest mouth ever
00:30:20Like I'd been sucking on a flip-flop
00:30:22It was dreadful
00:30:24Probably the worst part of being here
00:30:27And open up many things to you
00:30:30But it all has to begin slowly and gradually
00:30:34Can't think of anyone who would enjoy doing that other than a friar
00:30:38Like it's the worst thing possible
00:30:43It would be difficult for them, it would be challenging
00:30:45It may not happen in a day, it may not happen in two days
00:30:49It might even be towards the end that they begin to get into the rhythm of the life we live
00:30:55Eight, five, five, five, six, seven
00:30:58Get in my five of the day
00:30:59God, it's being late
00:31:00While the lads struggle to embrace the Priory's spiritual programme
00:31:04Personal trainer Alan's normal physical routine has been neglected
00:31:09Did you miss going to the gym?
00:31:11I've missed it for sure
00:31:12It's almost like the same as you
00:31:13Like if you don't go to like say prayer
00:31:16You kinda feel out of place
00:31:17It's a good way to start your day
00:31:19So who's volunteering?
00:31:22Let me take them for a personal training session
00:31:26Keep it going, let's go guys, let's go, come on
00:31:28We're gonna go straight in our squats
00:31:30So here, all the way down, all the way up
00:31:33Let's go
00:31:33Come on, let's go guys, let's go
00:31:35Alan normally works out six days a week
00:31:38Look, step back a wee tiny bit, right?
00:31:40We're gonna go all the way out
00:31:42So he decides it's the Friars' turn to be put through a strict regime
00:31:46Keep it going, keep it going, keep it going
00:31:48Right, okay, take 30 seconds, that was your warm up
00:31:52What?
00:31:52When I was younger, I was always this sorta nerdy looking kid
00:31:56Without actually having the smart to it
00:31:58So that was a lose-lose situation
00:32:01So working on my physique
00:32:02And then everything else then comes with it
00:32:05When you're working out, you're training hard, you look after yourself
00:32:08If you look good, you feel good
00:32:11PT Alan has monetised his muscles
00:32:14But his non-stop social life has left him worse for wear
00:32:18I moved out when I was 19 and I was drinking every weekend
00:32:22Just then got to a point where I wouldn't have enough money to pay for rent this month
00:32:25And then I was like, oh my God, what am I doing?
00:32:28Burnt out by his hard partying ways, Alan had only one option
00:32:33Get all the way down, hold it down, hold it down, hold it
00:32:35I just thought the world was going to end and then I thought my mum being like cracking back
00:32:40It's, oh, not good
00:32:43Five squats, five squats, no jumps, five squats
00:32:45But despite moving back to his mum's, on the go Alan's life still hasn't calmed down
00:32:51If I'm not doing something, I'll find something to do
00:32:54Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
00:32:55I do enjoy going out socialising with my friends, going and talking to girls, stuff like that
00:33:03He's starting to realise that he needs to slow down to move forward
00:33:07The fact that I never have the chance to stop and think about things
00:33:12And we're just holding that there
00:33:14I'm hoping I can learn the ability to be quiet and switch off, to be honest with you
00:33:21Because my hair does 100 males and over
00:33:24Yes!
00:33:25Well done, James
00:33:25Thank you, Alan
00:33:27Well done
00:33:31While the friars hope their lifestyle will rub off on their young guests
00:33:35Oh, wow, that's like a little podcast room
00:33:37They've spotted something this switched-on trio could teach them
00:33:42Now, I am a goon in terms of multimedia
00:33:44Well, that's crazy, I did not expect any of this
00:33:47But these young men, it's second nature to them
00:33:50They're part of this generation
00:33:52It's also a chance for the friars to show Max, Luke and Alan
00:33:55The value of helping their community
00:33:58Yeah, I didn't think you'd be so teched up with all your gadgets
00:34:00And you've even got your own logo on the wall
00:34:03The friars are tech-savvy
00:34:05Live-streaming mass and creating content to spread the good word
00:34:10Even the Pope has a Twitter handle
00:34:13Aware that all three lads rely on social media to promote their businesses
00:34:18Brother John Bosco wants them to help get more clicks for the Carmelites
00:34:22Can I challenge you to create content for TikTok or Instagram?
00:34:26I'm sure there's definitely something we can do, yeah
00:34:28We'll have to have a think
00:34:30Like the original influencer, Jesus
00:34:33The friars are always looking for more followers
00:34:35Let's go for it
00:34:37I do actually have an idea
00:34:39And brother John Bosco hopes the boys can help the prairie go viral
00:34:49It isn't long before inspiration strikes
00:34:53Where is it?
00:34:54Oh, that one
00:34:55And the lads prove they can move in mysterious ways of their own
00:34:59That is a beefy staircase
00:35:01That works perfect
00:35:03Feel like we're putting together a master plan
00:35:04Yeah
00:35:05So what, one by one
00:35:06Hoods up, no-one knows who's who
00:35:08Slowly bring their hoods up
00:35:09Dance area
00:35:11Here's the stage
00:35:12But the friars might take some persuading
00:35:16I'm John Bosco
00:35:17Takes the stage
00:35:18Get off, does something
00:35:19And then goes off camera
00:35:20And then he just walks off
00:35:21Right, and what are you doing, mate?
00:35:25Yeah, alright, alright
00:35:26Nice game plan, mate
00:35:30Still to come
00:35:31Okay, you could stop there probably, Father Alex
00:35:33Can the lads get likes for the Lord?
00:35:38And will the friars persuade them to put their wild ways on pause?
00:35:42It's just crazy
00:35:43I've never experienced anything like this
00:35:51Deep in rural Oxfordshire
00:35:53Luke, Alan and Max have hatched a plan
00:35:56To help their monastic hosts connect with the younger generation
00:36:00They've taught us so many things since being here
00:36:02And our way to give back would be to help them with what we know
00:36:07Yes, John Bosco
00:36:09Their plan is to create an attention-grabbing viral video
00:36:12That shows a different side of the brotherhood
00:36:16The three lads know all too well the power of social media
00:36:20Since I started doing my barbering and my social media
00:36:23They come hand in hand
00:36:25First, they need to pitch the idea
00:36:30We're going to have each person with their hoods up
00:36:32Until they get to the floor
00:36:34You take your hood off
00:36:35And you do a dance of your choice
00:36:37And then walk off camera
00:36:39Alan's going to demo for you quickly
00:36:47It's a long way from silent meditation
00:36:49But brother John Bosco has a compromise
00:36:52I think we will go with some of them but not all of them
00:36:55Okay
00:36:56Yeah
00:36:56And so we come down
00:36:58Make a gesture, not necessarily to dance
00:37:01Okay
00:37:01And then say a quote from one of our Camelite saints
00:37:05I didn't quite like that
00:37:07As we have not got our phones, we'll need a phone
00:37:10Alright, you got this, I know, I know you have
00:37:13Troops assemble
00:37:14Okay, you could stop there probably, Father Alex
00:37:17As they are more JC than Gen Z
00:37:22Their disarming dance moves come with a dose of scripture
00:37:26Priya is nothing else than an intimate sharing with friends
00:37:34With spirits lifted
00:37:37It's going to need a couple of goes
00:37:39You can't stop it
00:37:42To get the perfect shot
00:37:48Oh my god
00:37:51That was so good
00:37:52That was very good, well done
00:37:56If laughs mean likes, the boys are smashing it
00:38:02A few tweaks from TikTok's answer to Tarantino
00:38:05You happy with that? I'm happy with that
00:38:08Thank you very much
00:38:09And the mini masterpiece is ready
00:38:20Giving back to them has definitely, you know, hit deep with me, inside me as well
00:38:25Nothing disturb you, nothing frighten you
00:38:28All things are passing
00:38:30Because now a lot of evangelization happens in the social media
00:38:34That's also worth getting the youth, the young people as well
00:38:38I'm really impressed with what we've done
00:38:41Everyone's just absolutely smashed it today
00:38:47Prayer and contemplation
00:38:49This is what we are founded for
00:38:56We all had a laugh doing it
00:38:57I don't think anyone expected it to sort of be as funny as it was
00:39:00It should hopefully do well for them
00:39:13Go, let's go
00:39:14T-minus two minutes
00:39:16Six on the dot
00:39:18New dawn and a new day mate
00:39:21And another morning mass
00:39:24We've got two minutes, otherwise the class is late and we'll get kicked out
00:39:32I'm enjoying it
00:39:34I feel like my mind is free
00:39:36Actually having a wee bit of, like, sort of morning downtime where you can think about your thoughts and stuff
00:39:41like that might actually be beneficial so I might take that in my everyday life
00:39:45And Luke's suddenly seeing the benefits of laying off the late nights
00:39:49I feel fresh, I feel clear, no brain fog, yeah, yeah, it's very rewarding
00:39:56But Max is yet to be converted
00:40:00It's torture
00:40:01Up at 5.30 and sit there for about an hour and a half
00:40:04It was not my ideal morning to be honest with you
00:40:07A brief moment of peace from the Priory's schedule gives the lads a chance to confess their feelings about the
00:40:13Friars
00:40:14The more we've got to know them, it's, like, a little bit less, like, intense and, like, they're actually having
00:40:20a laugh and stuff like that
00:40:21Their little community, that sort of, say, all they've got that they're happy with and they're content
00:40:27And that's crazy
00:40:28They're up every single morning, 6am, serving for someone else, serving for a purpose
00:40:34So, it's kind of eye-opening, innit?
00:40:37But they're also doing it for each other as well, like, it's just crazy
00:40:40I've never experienced anything like this, or met anyone like them
00:40:45The fact that I'm seeing, like, all the fathers and everyone gathered together for dinner
00:40:50Is very, very refreshing
00:40:52That's like a sense of belonging in there
00:40:53Exactly, yeah, yeah
00:40:54They're all individuals, but living the same life and they actually are, like, their own family, innit?
00:40:59This unusual little family is beginning to make a big impression
00:41:03Growing up, I've never sat around a dinner table with, like, a mother and father figure together
00:41:07It's a really, really nice feeling for me to have that loving feeling
00:41:13Break over, it's back to work
00:41:17Oh
00:41:18Hello
00:41:19I like your rocking clothes
00:41:21That's the way to do it
00:41:25Cleaning this, this is nest of godliness
00:41:27We're giving it a pro-clean for Christ
00:41:29And then he respects you even more
00:41:31Oh, this looks like a whole bunch of fun
00:41:35Surely
00:41:36We are going to arrange the linens
00:41:39It's a busy house
00:41:40There's nobody lazy in this house
00:41:44Father Liam is introducing Luke to a new concept
00:41:47Mopping the floor
00:41:48If you take that starter over from that side
00:41:51And I'll take this side of the room
00:41:53I haven't done something like this, I think, ever
00:41:56Right
00:41:58This domestic demo has an ulterior motive
00:42:02Father Liam wants to discover more about Luke's home life
00:42:05How would you characterise your relationships with your own parents?
00:42:09I'm in, like, a divided family, so
00:42:11A lot of stuff went on when I was younger
00:42:13Growing up, I spent most of the time with my mother
00:42:16I didn't really see my father a lot
00:42:19One weekend I was living with my dad
00:42:21And we hear an unexpected knock on the door
00:42:24And it ended up being a squad of police officers
00:42:27That come and raided his house
00:42:29We were very, very scared, we didn't know what was happening
00:42:31My father ended up being taken away by the police
00:42:34Yeah, I didn't hear from him for about three years
00:42:39At that point I did think that I'm never going to see him again
00:42:42Many people have father wounds, you know
00:42:46Sometimes sons and fathers are left in deep division
00:42:50Where it can be resolved, very beautiful
00:42:52Because the father and the son in the trinity
00:42:55It's the most beautiful unity
00:42:57At the time it was quite hard
00:42:59I was a bit of a bad boy, I suppose
00:43:02I was in and out of schools around the area
00:43:05Distracted a lot, trying to be the class clown
00:43:09Very hyper, running around all the time
00:43:12Trying to be the centre of attention
00:43:13Where would you like to be in your relationship with your father?
00:43:17We are taking kind of baby steps
00:43:19To get to where I wished I could be with him
00:43:22To be able to sit down and have a chat with him, you know, properly
00:43:25I love the humanity, you're saying
00:43:27It is mending in small steps
00:43:30Yeah
00:43:31Will this affect the way you want to be a dad?
00:43:34Definitely, I want to be the parents I wish I had
00:43:37Just be a whole better version of what I wanted
00:43:40Father Liam has a mad dad energy
00:43:43It's okay, I'll do it for you
00:43:45It's going to definitely allow me to
00:43:46Kind of go up to my dad and have a conversation with him
00:43:49And just talk to him about kind of what's been going on in my life
00:43:52And maybe connect with him a little bit more than I had been before
00:43:56It's good to share this with you and thank you for being so open
00:43:59Thank you so much, thank you so much Father
00:44:01Good
00:44:04Good
00:44:04Oh, wow
00:44:06So far it's been prayer, eat, work, repeat
00:44:11One serve
00:44:12Go on, second serve
00:44:14And now the friars want to show the lads that they don't have to take their habits off to have
00:44:19a good time
00:44:20We do enjoy life
00:44:22We celebrate life
00:44:24You know, we enjoy the company of each other
00:44:26We have great parties in the community
00:44:29Ciao out, come on, ciao out
00:44:35The champion is making his way in
00:44:38The best table tennis player are between Noel and myself, I can say
00:44:46Noel and myself
00:44:52The fact that we bonded so well and we're completely different people
00:44:57It's just absolutely insane
00:45:02And these hedonists are beginning to see the benefits of living with these holy men
00:45:07A week ago I didn't think that, you know, we'd be able to get so close and have so much
00:45:13in common
00:45:14Yeah, I think the vikers have got an incline, they're all vikers
00:45:19So I'm going to take that and run to the hill with it
00:45:23Thanks for going
00:45:26Still to come
00:45:27All right, let's see what you can do today
00:45:30The boys have set their toughest test yet
00:45:33Oh, a slight bit of pressure, I didn't think I would
00:45:35And Max has an epiphany
00:45:37Mushrooms
00:45:38In a world where you can be anything, be kind, eh?
00:45:50Three young men, used to burning their candles at both ends, are settling into their priory stay
00:45:56Good morning
00:45:58Good morning
00:45:59After four days of intense religious instruction, Father Liam's decided it's time to step things up
00:46:06Today, you'll be engaging with something around supporting those who have little
00:46:12And let's see how that affects and engages you
00:46:15He wants to see if Max, Luke and Alan can walk the Carmelite walk when the brothers aren't watching
00:46:21We are not here for ourselves
00:46:23The whole purpose of our being here is for others
00:46:28Go on, Alan
00:46:29I'm glad I'm only little
00:46:30He's sent them on a secret mission, destination unknown
00:46:34I don't even know who we are
00:46:36We're a church, mate
00:46:37Where's the entrance?
00:46:39Here to reveal all is Gary, whose family run the iColin Smith Foundation
00:46:45Hello, good afternoon
00:46:46Which has helped feed Oxford's homeless for 35 years
00:46:49Let me get you kicked out with some stuff
00:46:52Yeah
00:46:52Let's go
00:46:53And today, he has three brand new volunteers
00:46:56For young men more used to the high life than real life
00:47:00Working in Gary's soup kitchen will be a huge test
00:47:03Tie me up
00:47:04Why can't you tie yourself up?
00:47:07It has become like tradition to engage in charity work
00:47:10To help those in need
00:47:12I feel like focusing my time on other people's lives or what's going on in the world
00:47:17Isn't really something that I'm interested in
00:47:19Have you chopped an onion?
00:47:21I have, yeah, but I don't know what side to cut before it makes your eyes cry
00:47:25Living in Manchester, there are a lot of homeless people
00:47:27But you get so caught up in your bubble and what you're doing
00:47:29So I sort of, yeah, turn a blind eye to all that
00:47:32So do you do this full-time? What is the script?
00:47:35My mum started it
00:47:36She just felt, in her heart, just cooked for people
00:47:39That's what she'd been doing from when she was young
00:47:41And that's what, for you guys, is to know that life isn't just you
00:47:45Life is bigger than what you think it is
00:47:48Homelessness is growing in Oxford
00:47:51But Gary and his family are serving hope
00:47:53One hot meal at a time
00:47:55On average, how many homeless people do you have in here at one time eating?
00:47:5940
00:47:59Oh, wow, a lot
00:48:01Doors open tomorrow, so today is all about getting the food ready
00:48:05How do you cook for 40 people, mate?
00:48:07I can't make a breakfast for, like, three of us
00:48:09Yeah
00:48:10Whoever peels the potato the fastest wins
00:48:13I can peel two peeps before he peels from
00:48:15He's gonna slice his hand up
00:48:17Watch your fingers, bro
00:48:19Fuck!
00:48:21How does it, you know, still make you feel after all this time of doing it?
00:48:25So that it's not just me, this is my wife, my son, my brother, my sister
00:48:30They all help, helping other people is what we do
00:48:33In a world where you can be anything, be kind, eh?
00:48:38Back in Manchester, Max is at the centre of his social scene
00:48:42I would describe myself as quite outgoing, definitely extroverted
00:48:46Love having a conversation, could talk the back legs off a donkey for hours
00:48:49But he wasn't always so popular
00:48:51School wasn't always sort of sunshine and rainbows
00:48:55It was rough
00:48:57When Max started secondary school, he was badly bullied
00:49:01That's you starting school, and you look really happy
00:49:04But, like, behind that smile, what did you really feel?
00:49:08Yeah, just broken
00:49:09A picture can show a certain image, but behind that is a million different stories
00:49:15That no-one is gonna know
00:49:17Did you feel safe in school?
00:49:19No, I hated going
00:49:19I just did not want to walk through the gates in the morning
00:49:21It's really sad, isn't it?
00:49:23I would rather have stayed here where I knew nothing could go wrong
00:49:26It was tough, tough years
00:49:29But you're resilient, you're very resilient
00:49:33As crap as it was, as rough as it was, and how shit I felt
00:49:38It's just made me who I am today
00:49:40I just lived my life, like, I wanna live it, and just, that's the way it is
00:49:45But Max can be so busy looking after number one
00:49:48He sometimes forgets life's not all about him
00:49:52Being in my, like, sort of, little bubble
00:49:55I sort of turn a blind eye to, sort of, how other people do live their life
00:49:59But maybe I should just consider other people a little bit more
00:50:02I guess it does feel good coming to a community like this and helping them
00:50:07Even though we haven't given anyone food yet or anything
00:50:10It makes you think more outside of the world that you live in, because it's not just you
00:50:13Pay it forward every time, it's gonna make a massive difference to people
00:50:17I think that's probably what Father Liam wanted us to experience today
00:50:21So, so, so, so, whatever you learn from this one, you take it
00:50:24Don't have to go without it, run with it, and pass it on
00:50:27Gary who runs the soup kitchen was, uh, so nice
00:50:31You could tell he had so much room for just love in his heart
00:50:36Well, thanks for coming, and if it's okay, we do
00:50:39Need you back tomorrow morning
00:50:42This evening, Father Liam has a big test for the boys at a local church
00:50:46Where he's often called to minister
00:50:50The parish priest here has given us access to his church and sanctuary
00:50:54There'll be people there as well, worshipping and honouring God
00:50:58And therefore, we're going to go in with that disposition and that respect
00:51:05Welcome to the sanctuary
00:51:07Alan, Max and Luke will be front and centre
00:51:10Helping out with the mass
00:51:11And it's vital they don't embarrass Father Liam or the Brotherhood
00:51:16Before we start mass, this is the lectionary
00:51:18From which somebody in the congregation is going to read the word of God to the people
00:51:24So, Alan, you'll be taking that out
00:51:28And, Max, this is the missal which is placed on the altar
00:51:36All week, the boys have struggled to take their prayers seriously
00:51:41Now they must show the respect needed in front of the whole congregation
00:51:46Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world
00:51:50Have mercy on us
00:51:53Father Liam concludes his sermon with a very special message
00:51:58Alan, Max and Luke
00:51:59I pray for each of you
00:52:01That as you've had the courage to come on these days
00:52:04And then carrying out the tasks of these days
00:52:07You've put yourself out of your comfort zone
00:52:10As we pray for the Holy Spirit to come upon these gifts
00:52:13May it come upon you
00:52:15There was people in there that we'd never met and didn't have a clue we were going to be there
00:52:18And he still singled us out and made us feel special
00:52:21And for your families at home
00:52:23I pray for healing, peace, restoration and strength
00:52:30What he was saying about my family, I took that in and that was really lovely
00:52:34And your grace in our lives through Christ our Lord
00:52:38Amen
00:52:39Even Atheist Max is moved by these particular prayers
00:52:43Thank you Father Liam
00:52:44And especially how you wish that health and happiness upon our families
00:52:47I think it touched the spot for us
00:52:49Bless your future and your families
00:52:52Back at the Priory, Max is seeing the benefits of life outside his bubble
00:52:58Nothing here that we've done and nothing about how they live their life is about I
00:53:02Make sure you consider other people's feelings and what you can do for other people
00:53:06To almost feel better about yourself
00:53:08Whilst Alan's feeling positive about returning to help feed the homeless
00:53:12If we can help out just a wee tiny bit for the day
00:53:15Then I'll be more than happy with that
00:53:17And I'm sure Gary will appreciate that
00:53:27Bright and early, the boys are eager to return to the soup kitchen to help Gary
00:53:31Lemp is on the way, dear
00:53:34Hello
00:53:35Morning
00:53:35But in the kitchen, there's no Gary
00:53:38I'm Gary's wife
00:53:41Today Gary's been rushed into hospital
00:53:44He's been having some chest pains
00:53:47We had to get the ambulance out to him
00:53:50Sorry to hear that
00:53:51Hope you're all good
00:53:53We've still got lots to prepare
00:53:56So we're going to need your help to do as good of a standard as Gary would normally do it
00:54:01All right? Let's get started, let's go for Gary, eh?
00:54:03Yes, we'll do it
00:54:04All right, thank you
00:54:06Although Gary's in hospital
00:54:08The soup kitchen must still open its doors in a few hours
00:54:12We're just going to try and get on with it
00:54:14We're going to make an even better meal from today, aren't we boys?
00:54:17Yes, yes we are
00:54:18I'll be feeling cadets soon
00:54:20It means putting all they've learnt in the last week to the test
00:54:24All right, let's see what you can do today
00:54:27Because we're on a tight time to be able to get things done, okay?
00:54:32Crazy the fact that we were literally cooking food with him yesterday
00:54:34Just all of a sudden he's in hospital
00:54:37In his normal work life, Luke can be unmotivated
00:54:40But today he'll need to focus
00:54:43The boys have got to step up and kind of take charge
00:54:48I feel a slight bit of pressure, I didn't think I would
00:54:50We've got to sort of be the men in the kitchen now, innit?
00:54:52We've got back shoes to fill
00:54:54Whilst Alan and Max get to grips with the vegetables
00:54:57Ready? Yeah
00:54:58Luke is on cooking duties with Susan
00:55:01Who's volunteered here for the last 10 years
00:55:04How does that make you feel?
00:55:06It makes me really happy because I'm giving back to people
00:55:08That aren't fortunate enough to be able to get a meal
00:55:10Hang on, hang on, it's your rubber glove
00:55:14Oh my gloves in there, yeah, look
00:55:15I was a little bit kind of unbothered by a lot of stuff
00:55:19Before I come here, but now I feel like I can open up
00:55:22And actually have that type of emotion I didn't think I had before
00:55:25Which is amazing
00:55:27It's not just Luke who is finding the positives of giving back
00:55:31I think the week as a whole
00:55:35It makes you think about things
00:55:38It's maybe taking a step back and realising what I've got in life
00:55:41Just staying a wee bit more grounded
00:55:43In less than 30 minutes, the soup kitchen will open its doors to 40 hungry mouths
00:55:49Put the mushrooms in there
00:55:54As the boys finish off the cooking, Father Liam arrives to check on his charges
00:55:58Good morning you
00:56:00Who do we know? Who do we know?
00:56:02Yes
00:56:03You OK? Well done
00:56:04What a lovely surprise, eh?
00:56:06How did you find the lads coming in to help?
00:56:10They were very helpful
00:56:12I think it's a good experience for them
00:56:14It's wonderful that you found them engaging, cooperating
00:56:18Yeah
00:56:19Now it's time to serve up
00:56:22We've got some carrots and mushrooms specially made by us
00:56:25We made these mushrooms, this one
00:56:28This week I didn't think that I'd be giving food out to the homeless
00:56:31And knowing that they've got their own difficulty going on in life
00:56:34And they are in need
00:56:35What would you like? Like some of this?
00:56:37Yeah, yeah
00:56:37Yeah
00:56:37This is today's special, handmade by myself, yeah
00:56:40Enjoy
00:56:41Father Liam has noticed a big shift in the boys behaviour
00:56:45I think this is a big, beautiful learning
00:56:49From experience, from reality
00:56:51Tell me if you want a bit more
00:56:53When you're hospitable to others
00:56:55You are hospitable to yourself
00:56:57Because the goodness comes back to you
00:57:01You're transformed from within
00:57:04And that's what's happening to these men
00:57:06And it's such a joy to watch
00:57:08Anything else?
00:57:10You got a drink, eh?
00:57:12In Glasgow there's a lot of soup kitchens
00:57:15And places where people can eat if they're homeless
00:57:18And people, especially my age, I don't think help as much
00:57:22Do you want some carrots?
00:57:24It's definitely something that I did say
00:57:26That I would try and take into my life
00:57:28And would you like a drink?
00:57:30But as the dinner service comes to an end
00:57:33Mushrooms?
00:57:34Max is nowhere to be seen
00:57:36Are you happy for me to sort of freestyle
00:57:38Or do you know roughly what you want?
00:57:39Tied it like half an inch off the top really
00:57:41Yeah, no worries at all man
00:57:42Outside, he's come up with his own kind of hospitality
00:57:47By offering his barbering skills to lunch guest Adam
00:57:51And how long have you found yourself in this situation for?
00:57:53If you don't mind me asking?
00:57:55Gosh, the past few years has been a bit rocky
00:57:59And a bit on and off
00:58:00And a bit stressful really
00:58:02Well look, I'm here as well to help today
00:58:04So I think the social side to it is massive
00:58:06So you're not just coming down for food
00:58:08To stop you making you feel a bit lonely
00:58:10And a bit not sure what to do
00:58:12100%
00:58:13Sometimes that's all it takes to alleviate someone's problems
00:58:16You know, just to have a conversation with someone
00:58:19For me the highlight of my day was cutting Adam's hair
00:58:22And it's just a lovely feeling
00:58:25They feel good and we feel good that we've helped them
00:58:27So it was lovely to be fair
00:58:30Where do these go?
00:58:32With all three taking something from their experience at the soup kitchen
00:58:35There's good news from the hospital
00:58:38Gary's on the mend
00:58:39Fingers crossed that Gary makes a recovery
00:58:41But hopefully we made him proud in the kitchen today
00:58:43With a bond and everything went to plan
00:58:45Really nice
00:58:46Happy?
00:58:47Yeah man, 100%
00:58:49Good, I'm glad
00:58:50Good to meet you bro
00:58:51Respect man
00:58:52I'm out, peace
00:58:55Guess I'm out and out
00:58:56I appreciate like the work that people do
00:59:01Just like out of their own pocket
00:59:03And more out of the kindness of their own heart
00:59:06Which is pretty meaningful
00:59:08From everything I've learnt being in this priory
00:59:11Is knowing that giving back to others is something that's so, so important
00:59:15I've not felt a feeling like that before
00:59:22Still to come
00:59:26The lads and friars raise a little hell
00:59:30And have an unexpected night to remember
00:59:40It's the end of the lads stay at the priory
00:59:43But they're not the only ones looking forward to celebrating
00:59:46The friars have big plans
00:59:48An ideal night out for me
00:59:49Would be get a little bit pissed
00:59:51And then we'd go out to the rave
00:59:54Maybe meet a few girls
00:59:55Have some good fun with them
00:59:57You can have a good night anywhere
00:59:59Whether you're drunk or sober
01:00:00But I say that most of the time it is drunk
01:00:04Hey
01:00:05Look at this
01:00:07It may be a Friday night out on the town
01:00:10But this surprise trip is a far cry
01:00:12From the boys usual nocturnal pursuits
01:00:15Let the game start
01:00:16Someone want to pick us a team name
01:00:17The lads and friars have spent the week growing closer
01:00:21But tonight the battle lines are redrawn
01:00:23The Holy Goats
01:00:25Holy Goats, yeah, score, let's do that
01:00:27Greatest of all time, you know
01:00:34And though they might not look like your average bowling team
01:00:40The friars have a secret weapon
01:00:43Father Shiju
01:00:44Woah, woah, woah
01:00:47Shiju said he had never played before
01:00:49But surprisingly he's got a, he's an actual
01:00:57Ball after ball after ball, strike after strike after strike, he's unbelievable, I did not think he'd be like that
01:01:06Many who come to our community say they've never experienced a more joyful, happy community because we're always laughing, we're
01:01:14always cracking each other up, it's a happy community
01:01:19After six days together, everyone's feeling the brotherly love
01:01:23The first day going into it, it was a wee bit serious, I think with all the prayers and stuff
01:01:28like that
01:01:30Again, they're just people like us and they enjoy having fun like us, so it's changed our mind on the
01:01:35friars
01:01:35But an experience, something that I probably wouldn't have ever thought going into this week
01:01:40But yeah, it was class man
01:01:42Who knew that I would be here this week at a bowling alley with friars and just having like the
01:01:48funniest time I've had in a while
01:01:52Strike, strike, strike
01:02:00I've never seen a group of people that are so happy to be together
01:02:06They have really shared our life, entered our life and we're delighted to share it with them
01:02:12And it even looks like the friars temperance has rubbed off on the boys
01:02:18I've won lager, and I called it a day, so you know, new me innit
01:02:22A few months ago today, I would have probably said to the boys, I think there's a few clubs around
01:02:30here, let's just go out, have a good night
01:02:31But nah, that's not how I'm feeling tonight
01:02:39That night was epic
01:02:44Alan, Luke and Max, thank you so much for sharing the evening with us
01:02:48I must say it has been so enjoyable
01:02:51And for us, we've discovered a champion amongst us
01:02:55Oh, thank you
01:02:58At 9pm, Father Alex calls time and the friars and lads head back to the priory
01:03:04But there is one final surprise in store
01:03:07No, we did it in between the bars
01:03:10Left right, middle left
01:03:15If you would have told me a week ago, I'd be doing the cha-cha slide with nine friars around
01:03:19me, I would have said, you're having me on
01:03:20Go B Autic! Go B Autic! Go B Autic! Go B Autic! Go B Autic! Go B Valic! Great, well
01:03:41I guess am they get packed
01:03:44After a week of living the life of a Carmelite friar
01:03:48It's time for the boys to return to their normal lives
01:03:51I'm going to try and change quite a few things in my life
01:03:53I think when I get back
01:03:55One, definitely going out
01:03:56I don't feel like I need to do that as much anymore
01:03:59This week's made me want to take a more serious approach to life
01:04:02It's just made me, like, actually want to just focus on stuff
01:04:05Like, now I've got things in my mind that I want to do when I get back
01:04:08And just fully lock in and do it
01:04:14In my life, it's always 100 million miles an hour
01:04:18Like, I'm always doing something
01:04:19There's never really a time to switch on
01:04:21I never sit down and take a minute to appreciate life
01:04:24To disconnect from social media
01:04:27And the digital world has been so refreshing
01:04:30After the full week, the distractions have stopped
01:04:33I'm in a good mindset in terms of that
01:04:35It's been good, man
01:04:37I've loved it
01:04:43I think I've just learned to be more understanding
01:04:48You know, life's not always about you
01:04:49And there's bigger problems out there
01:04:52If anything, everything we've done this week
01:04:53Is just solidified that
01:04:56Selfish is just one of the worst things you can be
01:04:59And for me, cutting Adam's hair
01:05:01Was the biggest and most rewarding moment for me
01:05:04Which made me think, you know, doing something like that
01:05:06Makes you feel so good
01:05:07Why would you not do it every day?
01:05:12We've had an open-hearted week
01:05:14And I pray that the blessing
01:05:17And the germinating hope in us
01:05:20Is passed on to them
01:05:23After six days of abstinence
01:05:25The lads finally get their phones back
01:05:28It's been a long week
01:05:29Yes
01:05:30Thank you
01:05:31Thank you very much
01:05:32It's been amazing
01:05:32It's been the most educational, funniest, strangest, abnormal week of my life
01:05:39Yeah, I wouldn't change any of it, I don't think
01:05:42Anyway, guys, we'll see you, it's all right
01:05:44I will definitely take a lot of things out of this
01:05:47It's been an amazing life experience
01:05:48Thank you all for having us, it's been amazing
01:05:53I believe they are leaving us with quite a number of treasures
01:05:57In the sense that they have explored another way of life
01:06:01I would think they are taking their way
01:06:03Being more intentional and focused
01:06:07As the young men left this afternoon
01:06:09There was a certain sadness
01:06:11The sadness of a family without child
01:06:20Next time
01:06:21Which one's the best for you?
01:06:22Three pampered young Brits who try not to lift a finger
01:06:25The only manual labour I'm doing is holding up a phone
01:06:28Bunk down a Wild West cowboy ranch
01:06:31As long as you can stay on the horse
01:06:33You're probably going to survive
01:06:34Ah!
