00:00:01Four extraordinary worlds steeped in tradition
00:00:05Are opening their doors
00:00:06Hopefully it's not haunted
00:00:07To four groups of young Brits
00:00:10I'm a bit nervous now
00:00:11Ready to take a giant leap out of their comfort zones
00:00:14I'm just a 24-7 princess
00:00:16What happens when a generation raised online
00:00:20All we care about is how we look
00:00:22I've really rotted my brain from TikTok
00:00:24Come face to face with regimes built on no-nonsense rules
00:00:28How long I've got to spend in silence
00:00:30Actually more than 10 hours
00:00:33Where loyalty and principles really count
00:00:36You had your blazer done off in my school
00:00:37You was a weirdo
00:00:38I don't want to do this anymore
00:00:40Will this unique clash of values
00:00:43Whatever I was expecting this is 50, 100% more
00:00:46Welcome to hell
00:00:46And cultures
00:00:49Lead to conflict
00:00:50Everybody can stand right here and shut the f*** up
00:00:53Or lasting change
00:00:54There comes a point where it's not fun and cool anymore
00:00:57And after each unforgettable week
00:01:00It was amazing
00:01:01We're top of the world right now
00:01:02Will either side ever be the same again?
00:01:05I think I've just found three friends
00:01:07It's been the most funniest, strangest, abnormal week of my life
00:01:13I feel like I've had an epiphany
00:01:17This time
00:01:18Hello
00:01:18Hello
00:01:19Three larger-than-life lads who love to party
00:01:22We do tend to drink silly sometimes
00:01:24Join an ancient religious brotherhood
00:01:26In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit
00:01:30Dedicated to a life of simplicity and service to others
00:01:34It isn't big money or big spending that will give them happiness
00:01:37Can young men use to pleasing themselves
00:01:40It's torture, I haven't been up at 5.30 in ages
00:01:44Obey a rigid routine
00:01:46Yeah
00:01:46Of silence
00:01:49Prayer
00:01:50And hard work
00:01:52I want to be able to grow up a bit faster
00:01:54And could mixing hedonists with holy men
00:01:59Deliver some miraculous results
00:02:02This is today's special
00:02:03I'm made by myself, yeah
00:02:04Enjoy it
00:02:05It makes you think more outside of the world that you live in
00:02:07Because it's not just you
00:02:08I feel like my mind is
00:02:19The Carmelite Priory, Oxford
00:02:22Home to a nine-strong sacred order
00:02:25Who've ditched distractions to lead a spiritual life
00:02:29Life in a monastery entails difficulties, struggles and challenges
00:02:34Our whole life is prayer
00:02:37It's about to open its cloistered doors
00:02:42To three party-loving lads more interested in having it large than the Holy Father
00:02:48There's any shaving of the hair involved
00:02:51Spin this back round and I'm going home because this can't come off
00:02:5323-year-old barber, Max
00:02:58Who lives in Manchester
00:02:59Hi, mate
00:02:59Good
00:03:01We do tend to drink silly sometimes
00:03:03When the first one's gone down, it's sort of inevitable, I think
00:03:05Can never say no to a night out
00:03:08I guess we're doing it again then, are we?
00:03:10I think I've diagnosed myself with FOMO, to be honest
00:03:12We do this every week, mate
00:03:14We're veterans
00:03:14When you see everyone around you having a good time, it's impossible to stop
00:03:18Do you want more or less?
00:03:19You know what, mate? You've given me a pint
00:03:20He's always the life and soul of any party
00:03:24I would describe myself as the loudest in the group
00:03:27There's not really a time where I'm not speaking unless I'm asleep
00:03:30But he rarely stops to see the world through another's eyes
00:03:33I've been quite successful for myself in the past year or so
00:03:36And do live a good life
00:03:37But I think it would be good for me to get out of my comfort zone
00:03:42No clue what to expect
00:03:43Do you think they're trained in, like, jiu-jitsu and stuff?
00:03:47Too many boozy nights out have caused 23-year-old Luke from Hemel Hempstead to take his eye off the
00:03:53ball
00:03:53I could be very unmotivated
00:03:55I could throw away my to-do list and then just go and do something else, like going out to
00:04:00a rave
00:04:01Owner of a fledgling fashion brand, all his profits are currently ploughed into his partying
00:04:07Spending £800 on a night out, you just have that feeling that wants to kind of, you know, throw your
00:04:12money away left, right and centre
00:04:14When it comes to looking sharp, Luke doesn't care about the price tag
00:04:19Here we've got the Louis Vuitton skater shoes
00:04:22They come in at about, about £1,000
00:04:24I feel like I just want to live my life and enjoy the time I've got while I'm young
00:04:32We're getting more and more into the countryside, aren't we?
00:04:37Genuinely never been in a farm
00:04:3924-year-old Glaswegian, Alan, is a personal trainer who doesn't know when to stop
00:04:44In terms of during the week, I would say I'm pretty responsible
00:04:47On Saturday, I do turn into a complete degenerate
00:04:50He has two loves, keeping fit and the opposite sex
00:04:53Hello guys, welcome to the session
00:04:57I'm a love of white heart
00:05:01Whether it's chasing women or knocking back chasers, Alan's always after the next thrill
00:05:06I'm very much like, you only live once, so I got it tattooed on me
00:05:12The constant chase of dopamine, I never sit down properly
00:05:16I'm at one with my feelings because I don't really know how to
00:05:20But he's reaching party burnout
00:05:23You'll love the lifestyle
00:05:24You'll love that crazy lifestyle
00:05:25Listen, I've had enough of the fast life
00:05:28I've had enough of the girls
00:05:29I've had enough of the nightclubs
00:05:30I want to be at peace
00:05:36These three hedonists may be looking for inner peace, but are they prepared for this much peace?
00:05:42Being a friar is a 24-hour, seven days a week life
00:05:48You don't clock in and clock out
00:05:50When it comes to devotion, this 800-year-old religious order doesn't do things by halves
00:05:56You forgo marriage and family and children
00:05:59You don't have a bank account
00:06:01You don't have your own rooms
00:06:02Anything that you have, you share
00:06:04The brotherhood follows a rigid routine
00:06:07Prayer three times a day
00:06:08With work and quiet contemplation in between
00:06:11The life of a friar is a life of simplicity
00:06:16Lived in community and prayer
00:06:19The three vows we make are the vows of obedience, chastity and poverty
00:06:29Three vows which are likely to concern the lads
00:06:32The no hair, the praying, the silence worries me
00:06:37You can't exist in Manchester, in a flat, living a high life your whole life
00:06:42Max's mum hopes the experience will help him step out of his bubble
00:06:46And I hope you just broaden your horizons on what other people think and feel
00:06:51I think it will help you grow, I really do
00:06:53Mum, my pants now
00:06:57A life without no money can be very difficult for someone who has lived that life with money
00:07:03Luke's business partner Marcus believes a week of poverty will change Luke's excessive mindset
00:07:08He must certainly needs humbling
00:07:11And just be an opportunity to see how other people do live, you know
00:07:16And don't have it gifted to him
00:07:18You thrive off girls' attention
00:07:20In terms of having an obedience, chastity, I'm definitely too far gone
00:07:25Sorry, Master Monk
00:07:29Before they get div out, it's time to get something out of their system
00:07:34Yeah, I think a couple fucks could definitely come out
00:07:36So maybe I have to say fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck
00:07:40Oi, here we are
00:07:44Fucking, oh, fucking hell, it's massive
00:07:46It's definitely not a hut
00:07:48Looks like Max hasn't got it all out just yet
00:07:52Look at this, Isaac
00:07:54He ain't living in no poverty
00:07:56Hopefully it's not haunted though
00:07:57I'm scared of ghosts
00:08:00It does look a little bit scary
00:08:03Like many young people
00:08:04They may be distracted with social media
00:08:07They want to party, go out with friends
00:08:11There's more of an outwardness to them
00:08:14The thing I probably do want to learn most
00:08:17Is seeing what life is like from someone else's perspective
00:08:21I maybe turn a bit of a blind eye to other people's lifestyles
00:08:25That aren't like mine
00:08:27The thing I hope to learn this week
00:08:29Is to take life a little bit more serious
00:08:31I'm still young
00:08:32But I feel like I still have a lot more maturing to do
00:08:36I think with my way still
00:08:38Maybe tone it down a wee tiny bit
00:08:41Yes, boys, you good?
00:08:42I think I've over-packed a bit
00:08:44How you doing, mate? I'm Luke
00:08:46How do we get in?
00:08:47Just going straight through that door
00:08:48Yeah?
00:08:49Alright, you go first
00:08:50Their holy hosts believe a week of God-given guidance
00:08:54Will put these modern men on the right path
00:08:57We have high hopes that this will impact on them positively
00:09:01How? We don't know
00:09:05I suppose they might think that we are strange beings of some sort
00:09:13Hello
00:09:15Still to come
00:09:16How long have I got to spend in silence?
00:09:18Actually, more than ten hours
00:09:20The lads struggle to stick to the rules
00:09:24We'll be keeping your phones for you
00:09:26And face a frugal fashion challenge
00:09:30Your flies are undone
00:09:39Three young hedonists are swapping parties for prayers
00:09:42To spend a week at a remote religious order
00:09:45We've got a big week to go, mate
00:09:47Can the friars help them tame their wild ways?
00:09:51Hello
00:09:52Hello
00:09:52Lovely to meet you
00:09:54Yeah, I'm Father Alex
00:09:55Welcome to the Calm Life Priory
00:09:56It seems very, like, quiet in here
00:09:59Yeah, we do try to maintain
00:10:01Some kind of quiet
00:10:03I'm normally very loud, so I'm going to keep the decibels low as I can
00:10:07We are nine friars in the Priory
00:10:11And we come from all sorts of backgrounds
00:10:14So you have three from India
00:10:16Five from Nigeria
00:10:19And one from Ireland
00:10:25Oh, wow
00:10:26Good
00:10:26Hello, everyone
00:10:27Hello, hello
00:10:28How are you?
00:10:30Just here
00:10:31Lovely to meet you
00:10:31Luke, Max and Alan
00:10:33Will be expected to follow the friars' strict routine
00:10:36Oh, do we stand up?
00:10:38Yes
00:10:38Oh, yeah
00:10:38Stand
00:10:39Sorry
00:10:40Starting with the communal meal
00:10:44Bless us, Lord, and things like you
00:10:46Which you are about to receive from your bounty
00:10:48Through Christ our Lord
00:10:49Amen
00:10:50Bon appetit
00:10:51Merci
00:10:51Thank you
00:10:54As they get stuck into their first supper
00:10:57Luke's got a burning question
00:10:59I've seen in the movies that monks are known for, like, karate and stuff
00:11:04Do you do, like, jiu-jitsu or karate?
00:11:08I've watched the film Bulletproof Monk
00:11:10I've watched the film Bulletproof Monk
00:11:10That's all I know
00:11:10And it's the ones that do, like, flying 360 kicks and stuff
00:11:13They're like kung fu pandas
00:11:17The monks in the films, they wear the robes, but they're, like, very...
00:11:20Uh, no
00:11:23These friars are more interested in a higher purpose than high kicks
00:11:28I feel like the thing I will struggle with the most is following rules
00:11:31Having to do what someone else does on their terms
00:11:34Could be quite difficult for me
00:11:37The ancient Carmelite order believe in service to others
00:11:41And spread the holy word through teaching, hospitality and acts of charity
00:11:46So what is the daily routine we're going to be going through?
00:11:50This week
00:11:51We start prayers at 6 and then we conclude at about 7.30
00:11:59I haven't gotten out of bed until, like, 10am for the last year
00:12:05We go for prayers again at 12
00:12:07And in the evenings, we go again at 5 for prayer
00:12:11At about 10, we maintain some silence, you know, to the next day
00:12:16Everything we do, whether it's work
00:12:19Whether it's prayer, we do it in silence
00:12:21On sort of average, how long do you like spending silence?
00:12:26Actually, more than 10 hours
00:12:29Silence here can be imposing
00:12:32But it's also so wonderful because the silence gives you opportunity to listen to your heart beat
00:12:38Then other times you work, they also observe some silence
00:12:43Oh, shit
00:12:44Oh, shit
00:12:47Rubbish, that
00:12:48Sorts
00:12:48Max will need to swap cursing for self-control to follow the fryer's rules
00:12:53Any situation where I have to be quiet, big problem for me
00:12:56I just get an urge to make a noise
00:12:59I don't know, maybe there's something wrong with me
00:13:01This silence is a silence of love
00:13:04It's a silence of supporting you
00:13:06No-one's a sit in silence
00:13:08It's boring
00:13:11The vow of silence gets a thumbs down
00:13:15Are we going to get these?
00:13:16It looks like Star Wars, like Anakin and that
00:13:19Luke Skywalker
00:13:20Well, give me the black one
00:13:21Oh, yeah, the black one
00:13:22I'll have black one
00:13:23But the holy couture gets a thumbs up
00:13:25They were almost as if they were, like, jedis
00:13:28The cloaks, the hoods they were wearing
00:13:31They were all pretty plight, to be honest with you
00:13:34So this is your place for the weeks
00:13:37Though the simple lodging soon bring the lads back to earth
00:13:41We call our rooms cells
00:13:43It's like the bee cells
00:13:46That's where we make spiritual honey
00:13:48Oh
00:13:49We have the holy bible
00:13:56Don't think I've really ever opened a bible
00:13:59Wouldn't really know where to start
00:14:01Look how there's a lot of pages in here
00:14:03I have absolutely no idea what we're going into
00:14:06Which is, one, the beauty
00:14:08And two, King of Petra found me
00:14:11And here is a crucifix
00:14:14And if I'm not mistaken, that is Jesus himself
00:14:18Ten hours of the day in silence
00:14:23I'm such a sociable person
00:14:25That way of living is crazy to me
00:14:29Settled in and bedded down
00:14:31It's a rare early night for these regular ravers
00:14:36Getting up for sex in the morning
00:14:38For mass
00:14:39No, I'll be fucking knackled
00:14:41I can't lie
00:14:42Not looking for a tip
00:14:44I'm going to have to stick by them three vows
00:14:47And I do like going out for fancy dinners
00:14:49Getting new clothes
00:14:50But I think this week
00:14:52It's a time for me to
00:14:53Get that out of my head
00:14:55And be a monk
00:14:56The fact that I went to a chapel
00:14:58To meditate in silence
00:14:59With people that I met today
00:15:02Doesn't bode well with me
00:15:03At all
00:15:16Alan
00:15:17Wakey, wakey
00:15:18The Friars' Day begins before sunrise
00:15:24Wakey, wakey, Alan
00:15:27Around the time
00:15:28These hard partiers
00:15:29Would normally call it a night
00:15:32Recently I've been quite bad
00:15:33And we end up rolling in
00:15:35At four in the morning
00:15:35You wake up the next day
00:15:37And you're like
00:15:37Why did I do this?
00:15:39Yo, Max
00:15:40At six in the morning
00:15:41We gather in the chapel for prayer
00:15:44It's a very meaningful activity
00:15:46And there is joy in doing that
00:15:53I think
00:15:54I think the hours
00:15:55Of prayer
00:15:57They might find difficult
00:15:59Am I church ready?
00:16:03I don't think you need to be ready
00:16:04The lads will be expected to attend chapel
00:16:07Three times a day
00:16:08Hear the Lord who saves us
00:16:11In the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit
00:16:17Let us stand before him
00:16:18Giving thanks
00:16:19With songs
00:16:20Let us hear the Lord
00:16:22Prayer time, boys
00:16:24This is where our life changes
00:16:26Hello
00:16:26For he is our God
00:16:28And we the people who belong to his pasture
00:16:31Father Alex hopes this sacred space
00:16:34Will show the lads
00:16:35There's more to life
00:16:36Than a big night out
00:16:37Amen
00:16:39My hope is that
00:16:41They will experience prayer
00:16:43And peace
00:16:44And appreciate their own deeper hunger
00:16:47For a meaningful life
00:16:53All I want to do is talk
00:16:54There's just too much energy building up
00:16:57And the longer I'm sitting in that quiet environment for
00:16:59The longer it wants to come out
00:17:02When we are at prayer
00:17:04Respect
00:17:05Our way of life
00:17:07So it will not be chatting
00:17:09Or answering the phone
00:17:12Just to have a certain decorum
00:17:14That is befitting for such a gathering
00:17:29Would just be me, wouldn't it?
00:17:31Everyone sitting there in silence
00:17:32Got Father asleep next to me
00:17:35That would probably shit him up
00:17:37I don't know how they do it
00:17:38Every single day of their life
00:17:39And I'm only one day in
00:17:46Keen to make sure Max and the other lads
00:17:49Stay focused for the rest of the week
00:17:51Just one little rule about phones
00:17:54Father Alex decides to take temptation off the table
00:17:59For this period you're with us
00:18:01We'll be keeping your phones for you
00:18:04So do we get them back at night time?
00:18:07No
00:18:08At the end of the week
00:18:09A week without their mobiles
00:18:11Will be uncharted territory
00:18:14I spend a lot of time on my phone
00:18:16I'm usually in the routine
00:18:17Of always doing something
00:18:18So when I'm not
00:18:20I'll just be sitting in my bed
00:18:21Doing scrolling on TikTok
00:18:23It's always just next to you
00:18:25To the point that if it buzzes
00:18:27I can't just, you know
00:18:28Don't pick it up
00:18:30After morning prayers
00:18:31The friars tackle their daily chores
00:18:34I'm happy to do whatever
00:18:36Yeah, I don't mind
00:18:36I think I'm a pretty good bed maker
00:18:38For the priory's brotherhood
00:18:41These basic jobs aren't just about keeping the place clean
00:18:44Keeping ourselves grounded
00:18:46In simplicity and truth
00:18:48That's what work is
00:18:50They're a daily lesson in humility
00:18:52If a person will not work
00:18:54They should not eat
00:18:56It's that fundamental
00:18:57It's food for the soul
00:18:59A lesson Father Liam hopes his thrill-seeking guests will take on board
00:19:03Hopefully there's no spiders up here
00:19:05While Alan and Father Clement tidy the priory's messy attic
00:19:09One day a year they do it
00:19:11This is the day they pick me
00:19:12My mum would be real happy watching this
00:19:14Luke and Max help Father Noel clear the cobwebs from the guest rooms
00:19:19Training's paid off, Mum
00:19:22Oh my God, look
00:19:24Are they eggs?
00:19:25Fashion brand owner Luke struggles with work-life balance
00:19:28And it's harming his business
00:19:30Are they moving?
00:19:32They're spiders eggs
00:19:33That can't be coffee beans
00:19:34I find it difficult to focus
00:19:36I feel like I've got a very short attention span
00:19:39Eventually I just end up spending a week going out and not actually doing any work
00:19:44Mate, this is what you call a thorough deep clean
00:19:47He's hoping his stay at the priory will be the reset he needs
00:19:52I'm very happy
00:19:53I really enjoy what I do
00:19:55I love it a lot
00:19:56I love it too much
00:19:58I'm trying to find a balance
00:20:00Trying to sort myself out really
00:20:01I am about 90% fulfilled with my happiness in life
00:20:05I would love to get more serious
00:20:07I feel like I don't have enough seriousness in my life at the moment
00:20:11And so I get that windowsill
00:20:13Max says he doesn't believe in God
00:20:15But he does believe in speaking his mind
00:20:17So what idea do you have of anything about Christianity?
00:20:20That Jesus died on the cross and came back to life
00:20:22Yes
00:20:22Since Jesus, who else has come back to life when they die?
00:20:25No one
00:20:26And that's one thing
00:20:27And then my extension took a year to build
00:20:29But God built the world in seven days
00:20:31How did he do it?
00:20:32Can't build the world in seven days
00:20:33If my extension took a year to build
00:20:35Do you know what I mean?
00:20:38Whilst Father Noel lets Max's revelation sink in
00:20:41Right, you ready?
00:20:43Luke's efforts to get more serious
00:20:45Haven't lasted long
00:20:47Yes
00:20:47What do you want, Mush?
00:20:50What's this?
00:20:50Knock down ginger?
00:20:52I bet he's in there
00:20:53No, I don't think he's there
00:20:54I want to be able to kind of grow up a bit faster
00:21:00Oh, if you've run off
00:21:03There's a mattress in the way
00:21:04I'm still young
00:21:05But I feel like I still have a lot more maturing to do
00:21:09Where is he?
00:21:11And I still need to get to that next step
00:21:15I'm the invisible man
00:21:20I remember when they entered the chapel
00:21:22They suddenly put their leg on
00:21:24The other leg
00:21:25And they laugh
00:21:26And I very rarely have encountered things like this
00:21:30As night falls
00:21:31The friars retreat to the library
00:21:33To share their first impressions
00:21:35And plot their next move
00:21:36I was talking to Max
00:21:39And I just asked him
00:21:40Why exactly do you not believe in God?
00:21:42He said because he's an atheist
00:21:45When it comes to the lads' spiritual growth
00:21:48It's clear they've got their work cut out
00:21:51They're not even Christians
00:21:53So they don't subscribe to any religion
00:21:55I was a bit apprehensive
00:21:58How they will fit into our prayer time
00:22:02Especially the meditation
00:22:03I could see that the chapel posed a challenge for them
00:22:07And I noticed that they struggled with that
00:22:11Father Liam has seen it all before
00:22:14He believes the lads need a guiding hand
00:22:16To get on the right path
00:22:17And has a plan to help them
00:22:19Well most people when they come
00:22:21First to the priory
00:22:23They're very uneasy
00:22:24Introduction to the Christian life
00:22:26Has to be gradual
00:22:27And that way they begin to
00:22:28Genuinely experience a new meaning
00:22:32Something has been sown in them
00:22:35So I just uphold them in prayer
00:22:38And God will do the rest
00:22:44Still to come
00:22:45Alvis Netball
00:22:46Father Liam's master plan begins
00:22:48With a lesson on poverty
00:22:50That looks good, doesn't it?
00:22:52It could have been worse
00:22:53Anything could have been worse
00:22:54Silence is your friend
00:22:56But Max struggles to see the light
00:22:58It was dreadful
00:23:00Probably the worst part
00:23:01Out of being here
00:23:14The friars in a remote Oxfordshire priory
00:23:17Are on a mission to persuade three young men
00:23:19To swap last orders for holy orders
00:23:22Family values are beginning to erode in our society
00:23:29And it's even worse with the Gen Z's
00:23:32Social media is not the reality of the life
00:23:36They have a plan to teach them some new life lessons
00:23:40With a rigid schedule of prayers
00:23:41How long was that, Father?
00:23:43That was an hour
00:23:44Oh, really?
00:23:44That was one hour
00:23:45That is not normal
00:23:46I feel like Sean in a dead
00:23:48Fellowship
00:23:50Meditation is a means to prayer
00:23:52I've never meditated before either
00:23:54Do you fall asleep when you do it sometimes?
00:23:56Yes
00:23:56In a dead
00:23:57Are you good at washing up?
00:24:00And chores
00:24:01Alan's got the most important job
00:24:04Today, Father Liam has also spotted the perfect opportunity
00:24:08To challenge them on a core karma-like vow
00:24:10Poverty
00:24:11I'm ready
00:24:13Let's go
00:24:13Poverty is very much a vow of simplicity
00:24:17Road trip
00:24:18To shed the many things we may want to possess
00:24:23That then become a burden on that journey
00:24:25To live a simple life
00:24:31Are we going in the shopping centre?
00:24:34When we go shopping
00:24:36It's expected that a friar
00:24:38Will have a mentality of poverty
00:24:40Keeping his mind
00:24:42And his heart
00:24:43Close to
00:24:44The basics of life
00:24:47Seeing that the lads
00:24:48Didn't bring appropriate work wear for the week
00:24:50He's setting them a thrifty challenge
00:24:53At this charity shop
00:24:54You have a budget of £15 each
00:24:57To get your clothes
00:24:58Let's go in
00:24:59Let's go
00:25:00Let's go
00:25:01Let's go
00:25:01Splash of cash again
00:25:02So here we are
00:25:02It's a long way from what they'd usually spend
00:25:06The clothes that I sort of wear
00:25:07You're not getting an outfit under £100
00:25:10No chance
00:25:10To be honest
00:25:12We have £15 is mental
00:25:14Shop till you drop
00:25:15A critical hope
00:25:18Is that they're going to see
00:25:19That it isn't big money
00:25:21Or big spending
00:25:22That'll give them happiness
00:25:24You need to find my pay that chose us now
00:25:26Happiness comes from much simpler human things
00:25:29Are we getting shoes as well?
00:25:31Well that's up to you
00:25:32It's your shopping
00:25:33You've got your budget
00:25:35Pleasure
00:25:35Position
00:25:36Power
00:25:37No longer satisfies
00:25:39People are beginning to ask questions
00:25:41And it always begins with
00:25:43I want to know
00:25:45Why am I not feeling satisfied?
00:25:47Normally Luke spends first
00:25:49And worries later
00:25:50That looks good
00:25:51That looks good
00:25:52Doesn't it?
00:25:53Usually
00:25:54Going shopping
00:25:55I'll just go out
00:25:56Find something I like
00:25:57If it's good
00:25:58I'll get it
00:25:59What have you not bought enough of?
00:26:00Mate, everything
00:26:02Actually I've got enough pants
00:26:03That's it
00:26:04Well that's a good startling
00:26:05So I wouldn't be buying them
00:26:06From the chance
00:26:10At home
00:26:11Luke's nan is losing patience
00:26:13With his expensive tastes
00:26:14You've got to stop spending money
00:26:16That you haven't got
00:26:17Yeah
00:26:18I can't be spending money all the time
00:26:19No
00:26:20It's not good
00:26:20No
00:26:21I worry that you're going to get into debt
00:26:22And into bother
00:26:24It's a big worry
00:26:25The most I've dropped on a night out
00:26:27I'd probably say about
00:26:28£500, £600
00:26:29It's not a nice feeling to wake up to
00:26:32But when you've had a lot of drinks
00:26:34It doesn't seem like
00:26:35A bad decision to do
00:26:37It'll do you good
00:26:38Yeah
00:26:38Not to have the money
00:26:40Then you may learn
00:26:41To stop spending what you haven't got
00:26:43Yeah
00:26:43But spending big on clothes
00:26:45And nights out
00:26:46Has meant his brand suffers
00:26:47Usually what goes in my bank
00:26:49Comes straight out
00:26:51Shopping on a budget
00:26:52Might be a struggle for Luke
00:26:54Ready?
00:26:55Three
00:26:55But Alan's quids in
00:26:56One
00:26:59Your flies are undone
00:27:02And it might be more Primark than Prada
00:27:05Oh mate
00:27:07But Max has also bagged an outfit
00:27:09What a steal eh?
00:27:10Oh you've done it mate
00:27:12Albus netball
00:27:13You killed that bro
00:27:15That is really good
00:27:17It's really good
00:27:18It's lightweight
00:27:19You can move in it
00:27:24Comes with a tissue
00:27:26That's disgusting
00:27:28It's a
00:27:29Shall we go in there for now
00:27:30Shall we?
00:27:31Yeah
00:27:32Oh I've come out
00:27:34Trumped in that shop
00:27:35That is the bollocks
00:27:36What I've got
00:27:38Meanwhile
00:27:38Luke is still struggling
00:27:40With the work wear brief
00:27:41We've got a little set on here
00:27:42What do you think about this?
00:27:44You can't wear that
00:27:45When working
00:27:46Why?
00:27:46I mean
00:27:47If you're out raking leaves
00:27:48Tomorrow morning
00:27:49Are you going to wear that?
00:27:50It was definitely an experience
00:27:51That I've not had before
00:27:53It was difficult
00:27:54That would do the job wouldn't it?
00:27:56I mean
00:27:56It could have been worse
00:27:57The outfit matches
00:27:58It's fine
00:27:59But
00:28:00I'm definitely jealous of Max's outfit
00:28:02So what have you learned
00:28:04From this experience here?
00:28:09By not putting a priority on the exterior
00:28:12It's something interior is being fostered
00:28:15That's the idea you see
00:28:17These are words that sort of come into my mind
00:28:20My small capacity brain
00:28:21That just come out the other side
00:28:22And I kind of forget
00:28:26Max might have missed the meaning
00:28:28In Father Liam's task
00:28:29But spendthrift Luke
00:28:31Has been paying attention
00:28:32Today when I bought out
00:28:34Of what I need
00:28:35Is definitely something
00:28:36That I need to learn
00:28:37I'm learning a lot
00:28:38About moderation already
00:28:39And we are literally a day in
00:28:53With one life lesson starting to sink in
00:28:56The lads now face the friar's next challenge
00:28:58Finding serenity
00:29:01I left my coat in there last time
00:29:03So I hope you didn't nick it
00:29:05One of them did say he liked it
00:29:06He's going to be wearing it today at the chapel
00:29:08Our rule tells us to meditate on the word of God
00:29:11Day and night
00:29:12An hour is meditation
00:29:14An hour is silence before God
00:29:16It's the place where your weaknesses manifest
00:29:19Where your struggles are manifest
00:29:21So now at this point
00:29:23The community will be entering
00:29:25Into a time of prayer
00:29:28And silence
00:29:29This morning
00:29:30They must take part
00:29:32In a silent meditation
00:29:33Silence is your friend
00:29:36The friars want them to block out distractions
00:29:39And focus on deeper thoughts
00:29:44I wasn't looking forward to it
00:29:46But I didn't think it would be
00:29:48As difficult as it was today
00:29:49But it's more a case of deep sleep
00:29:52I saw like Alan next to me
00:29:54And he was just conked out
00:29:56Max was catching Z's
00:29:58He was conked out as well
00:30:00I noticed there was a wee bit
00:30:01Sort of eyes were closing over
00:30:04Yawning a wee bit
00:30:06I can never like accidentally
00:30:07Woke up and almost shout at myself
00:30:10And if you can't focus on the person of Jesus
00:30:13Just bear in mind the great spirit of God
00:30:17I sort of woke up
00:30:18With the driest mouth ever
00:30:20Like I'd been sucking on a flip flop
00:30:22It was dreadful
00:30:24Probably the worst part
00:30:25Out of being here
00:30:27And open up many things to you
00:30:30But it all has to begin slowly
00:30:33And gradually
00:30:34Can't think of anyone
00:30:36Who would enjoy doing that
00:30:37Other than a friar
00:30:38Like it's the worst thing possible
00:30:43It would be difficult for them
00:30:45It would be challenging
00:31:12It may not happen in a day
00:31:14It may not happen in two days
00:31:15I'd say prayer
00:31:16You kind of feel out of place
00:31:17It's a good way to start your day
00:31:19So who's volunteering
00:31:21Let me take them for a personal training session
00:31:26Keep it going
00:31:27Let's go guys
00:31:27Let's go
00:31:28Come on
00:31:28We're going to go straight in our squats
00:31:30So here
00:31:31All the way down
00:31:32All the way up
00:31:33Let's go
00:31:33Come on
00:31:34Let's go guys
00:31:34Let's go
00:31:35Alan normally works out six days a week
00:31:38Look step back a wee tiny bit
00:31:40Right
00:31:40We're going to go
00:31:41All the way out
00:31:42So he decides
00:31:43It's the friar's turn
00:31:44To be put through a strict regime
00:31:46Keep it going
00:31:47Keep it going
00:31:47What would you say of this one
00:31:48Right okay
00:31:49Take 30 seconds
00:31:50That was your warm up
00:31:52When I was younger
00:31:53I was always this sort of
00:31:55Nerdy looking kid
00:31:56Without actually having the smart to it
00:31:58So that was a lose lose situation
00:32:01So working on my physique
00:32:02And then everything else
00:32:04Then comes with it
00:32:05When you're working out
00:32:06You're training hard
00:32:07You look after yourself
00:32:08If you look good
00:32:09You feel good
00:32:11PT Alan has monetised his muscles
00:32:13But his non-stop social life
00:32:16Has left him worse for wear
00:32:18I moved out when I was 19
00:32:20And I was drinking every weekend
00:32:22Just and got to a point
00:32:23Where I wouldn't have enough money
00:32:24To pay for rent this month
00:32:25And then I was like
00:32:26Oh my god
00:32:27What am I doing
00:32:28Burnt out by his hard partying ways
00:32:31Alan had only one option
00:32:33Get all the way down
00:32:34Hold it down
00:32:34Hold it down
00:32:35Hold it
00:32:35I just thought the world was going to end
00:32:38And then I thought my mum being like
00:32:39Cracking back
00:32:40It's not good
00:32:42Five squats
00:32:43Five squats
00:32:44Go jumps
00:32:44Five squats
00:32:45But despite moving back to his mum's
00:32:47On the go
00:32:48Alan's life still hasn't calmed down
00:32:51If I'm not doing something
00:32:53I'll find something to do
00:32:54Hey
00:32:54Hey
00:32:55Hey
00:32:55Hey
00:32:56I do enjoy going out
00:32:57Socialising
00:32:58With my friends
00:33:00Going and
00:33:01Talking to girls
00:33:02Stuff like that
00:33:03He's starting to realise
00:33:04That he needs to slow down
00:33:06To move forward
00:33:07The fact that I never
00:33:09Have the chance to
00:33:10Stop and think about things
00:33:12And we're just holding out there
00:33:14I'm hoping I can learn
00:33:16The ability to
00:33:17Be quiet
00:33:18And switch off
00:33:20To be honest with you
00:33:21Because my head is
00:33:22100 miles or never
00:33:24Yes
00:33:24Well done guys
00:33:25Thank you
00:33:27Well done
00:33:31While the Friars hope their lifestyle
00:33:33Will rub off on their young guests
00:33:35Oh wow
00:33:36That's like a little podcast room
00:33:37They've spotted something
00:33:39This switched on trio
00:33:40Could teach them
00:33:41Now I am a goon
00:33:43In terms of multimedia
00:33:44Bro that's crazy
00:33:46I did not expect any of this
00:33:47But these young men
00:33:48It's second nature to them
00:33:50They're part of this generation
00:33:51It's also a chance for the Friars
00:33:54To show Max
00:33:54Luke and Alan
00:33:55The value of helping their community
00:33:57Yeah I didn't think
00:33:59You'd be so teched up
00:34:00With all your gadgets
00:34:00And you've even got
00:34:01Your own logo on the wall
00:34:02The Friars are tech savvy
00:34:05Live streaming mass
00:34:06And creating content
00:34:07To spread the good word
00:34:09Even the Pope
00:34:11Has a Twitter handle
00:34:13Aware that all three lads
00:34:15Rely on social media
00:34:16To promote their businesses
00:34:17Brother John Bosco
00:34:19Wants them to help
00:34:20Get more clicks
00:34:21For the Carmelites
00:34:22Can I challenge you
00:34:23To create content
00:34:24For TikTok or Instagram
00:34:25I'm sure there's definitely
00:34:27Something we can do
00:34:27Yeah
00:34:28We'll have to have a think
00:34:30Like the original influencer
00:34:32Jesus
00:34:32The Friars are always looking
00:34:34For more followers
00:34:35Let's go
00:34:36See all the brains
00:34:37I do actually have an idea
00:34:39And brother John Bosco
00:34:41Hopes the boys can help
00:34:42The Priory go viral
00:34:49It isn't long before
00:34:51Inspiration strikes
00:34:52Where is it?
00:34:54Oh that one
00:34:55And the lads prove
00:34:56They can move in
00:34:57Mysterious ways of their own
00:34:59That is a beefy staircase
00:35:01That works perfect
00:35:03I feel like we're putting
00:35:03To give a master plan
00:35:04Yeah
00:35:05So what one by one
00:35:06Hoods up
00:35:07No one knows who's who
00:35:08Slowly bring their hoods up
00:35:09Dance area
00:35:10Here's the stage
00:35:12But the Friars
00:35:13Might take some persuading
00:35:16I'm John Bosco
00:35:17Takes the stage
00:35:18Head off
00:35:18Does something
00:35:19And then goes off camera
00:35:20And then he just walks off
00:35:21Right and what are you doing mate?
00:35:25Yeah alright
00:35:26Nice game plan mate
00:35:29Still to come
00:35:30Okay you could stop there
00:35:32Probably Father Alex
00:35:33Can the lads get likes
00:35:34For the Lord?
00:35:36Hee hee
00:35:38And will the Friars
00:35:39Persuade them
00:35:40To put their wild ways
00:35:41On pause?
00:35:42It's just crazy
00:35:43I've never experienced
00:35:44Anything like this
00:35:51Deep in rural Oxfordshire
00:35:53Luke, Alan and Max
00:35:55Have hatched a plan
00:35:56To help their monastic hosts
00:35:57Connect with the younger generation
00:36:00They've taught us so many things
00:36:02Since being here
00:36:02And our way to get back
00:36:04Would be to help them
00:36:05With what we know
00:36:07Yes
00:36:08John Bosco
00:36:09Their plan is to create
00:36:10An attention grabbing
00:36:11Viral video
00:36:12That shows a different side
00:36:14Of the brotherhood
00:36:15Mommy
00:36:16The three lads know all too well
00:36:18The power of social media
00:36:20Since I started doing
00:36:21My barbering
00:36:22And my social media
00:36:23They come hand in hand
00:36:25First
00:36:26They need to pitch the idea
00:36:30We're going to have each person
00:36:32With their hoods up
00:36:32Until they get to the floor
00:36:34You take your hood off
00:36:35And you do a dance of your choice
00:36:36And then walk off camera
00:36:39Alan's going to demo for you quickly
00:36:43Hee hee
00:36:47It's a long way from silent meditation
00:36:49But brother John Bosco
00:36:51Has a compromise
00:36:52I think we will go with some of them
00:36:54But not all of them
00:36:55Okay
00:36:56And so we come down
00:36:58Make a gesture
00:36:59Not necessarily to dance
00:37:01Okay
00:37:01And then say a quote
00:37:03From one of our Camelite saints
00:37:04I didn't quite like that
00:37:07As we've not got our phones
00:37:09We'll need a phone
00:37:10Alright you got this
00:37:11I know
00:37:12I know you have
00:37:12Troops assemble
00:37:14Okay
00:37:15You could stop there
00:37:16Probably Father Alex
00:37:17As they are more JC than Gen Z
00:37:23Their disarming dance moves
00:37:24Come with a dose of scripture
00:37:26Priya is nothing else
00:37:28Than an intimate sharing with friends
00:37:34With spirits lifted
00:37:37It's going to need a couple of goes
00:37:39You can't stop it
00:37:42To get the perfect shot
00:37:44Oh my god
00:37:51That was very good
00:37:53Well done
00:37:56If laughs mean likes
00:37:58The boys are smashing it
00:38:02A few tweaks from TikTok's answer to Tarantino
00:38:05You happy with that?
00:38:07I'm happy with that
00:38:08Thank you very much
00:38:09And the mini masterpiece is ready
00:38:19Giving back to them
00:38:21Has definitely
00:38:21You know
00:38:22Hit deep with me
00:38:23Inside me as well
00:38:25Nothing disturb you
00:38:27Nothing frighten you
00:38:28All things are passing
00:38:30Because now a lot of evangelisation happens
00:38:33In the social media
00:38:34That's also worth getting the youth
00:38:36The young people as well
00:38:38I'm really impressed
00:38:40Of what we've done
00:38:41Everyone's just
00:38:41Absolutely smashed it today
00:38:47Prayer and contemplation
00:38:49This is what we're founded for
00:38:56We all had a laugh doing it
00:38:57I don't think anyone expected it
00:38:58To sort of be as funny as it was
00:39:00It should hopefully do well for them
00:39:13Go let's go
00:39:14T-minus two minutes
00:39:16Six on the dot
00:39:18New dawn and a new day mate
00:39:21And another morning mass
00:39:24We've got two minutes
00:39:25Otherwise the class is late
00:39:27And we'll get kicked out
00:39:32I'm enjoying it
00:39:33I feel like my mind is free
00:39:36Actually having a wee bit of
00:39:37Like sort of morning downtime
00:39:39Where you can think about
00:39:40Your thoughts and stuff like that
00:39:41Might actually be beneficial
00:39:42So I might take that
00:39:43In my everyday life
00:39:45And Luke's suddenly seeing
00:39:47The benefits of laying off
00:39:48The late nights
00:39:49I feel fresh
00:39:51I feel clear
00:39:52No brain fog
00:39:53Yeah, yeah
00:39:54It's very rewarding
00:39:56But Max is yet to be converted
00:40:00It's torture
00:40:01Up at 5.30
00:40:02To sit there for about an hour and a half
00:40:04It was not my ideal morning
00:40:06To be honest with you
00:40:07A brief moment of peace
00:40:09From the Priory's schedule
00:40:10Gives the lads a chance
00:40:11To confess their feelings
00:40:13About the Friars
00:40:14The more we've got to know them
00:40:15It's like a little bit less
00:40:17Like intense
00:40:18And like they're actually
00:40:19Having a laugh
00:40:20And stuff like that
00:40:21Their little community
00:40:22That sort of
00:40:23Say all they've got
00:40:24That they're happy with
00:40:25And they're content
00:40:27And that's crazy
00:40:28They're up every single morning
00:40:306am
00:40:31Serving for someone else
00:40:33Serving for a purpose
00:40:34So
00:40:35It's kind of eye opening
00:40:36But they're also doing it
00:40:38For each other as well
00:40:38Like it's just crazy
00:40:40I've never experienced
00:40:41Anything like this
00:40:42Or met anyone like them
00:40:45The fact that I'm seeing
00:40:46Like all the fathers
00:40:48And everyone gathered
00:40:49Together for dinner
00:40:50Is very very refreshing
00:40:52That's like a sense
00:40:52Of belonging in there
00:40:53Exactly
00:40:54They're all individuals
00:40:55But living the same life
00:40:56And they actually are
00:40:57Like their own family
00:40:58This unusual little family
00:41:00Is beginning to make
00:41:02A big impression
00:41:02Growing up
00:41:03I've never sat around
00:41:04A dinner table
00:41:05With like a mother
00:41:06And father figure together
00:41:07It's a really really nice
00:41:08Feeling for me
00:41:09To have that loving feeling
00:41:13Break over
00:41:14It's back to work
00:41:17Oh
00:41:18Hello
00:41:18I like your rocking clothes
00:41:21That's the way to do it
00:41:23Okay
00:41:25Cleaningness
00:41:25This is nice to godliness
00:41:27We're giving it a pro clean
00:41:28For Christ
00:41:29And then he respects you
00:41:30Even more
00:41:31Oh that looks like
00:41:33A whole bunch of fun
00:41:35Surely
00:41:36We are going to
00:41:37Arrange the linens
00:41:39It's a busy house
00:41:40There's nobody lazy
00:41:42In this house
00:41:43Father Liam is introducing
00:41:45Luke to a new concept
00:41:47Mopping the floor
00:41:48If you take that starter
00:41:50Over from that side
00:41:51And I'll take this side
00:41:52Of the room
00:41:53I haven't done something
00:41:54Like this
00:41:55I think ever
00:41:56Right
00:41:58This domestic demo
00:42:00Has an ulterior motive
00:42:01Father Liam wants to
00:42:03Discover more
00:42:03About Luke's home life
00:42:05How would you characterise
00:42:06Your relationships
00:42:07With your own parents
00:42:08I'm in like a divided family
00:42:10So
00:42:10A lot of stuff went on
00:42:12When I was younger
00:42:13Growing up
00:42:14I spent most of the time
00:42:15With my mother
00:42:16But I didn't really see
00:42:17My father a lot
00:42:19One weekend
00:42:19I was living with my dad
00:42:21And we hear an unexpected
00:42:23Knock on the door
00:42:24And it ended up being
00:42:25A squad of police officers
00:42:27That come and raided his house
00:42:29We was very, very scared
00:42:30We didn't know
00:42:30What was happening
00:42:31My father ended up
00:42:32Being taken away
00:42:33By the police
00:42:34Yeah, I didn't hear
00:42:36From him for about
00:42:37Three years
00:42:39At that point
00:42:40I did think
00:42:40That I'm never going to
00:42:41See him again
00:42:43Many people
00:42:44Have father wounds
00:42:46You know
00:42:46Sometimes sons and fathers
00:42:48Are left in deep division
00:42:50Where it can be resolved
00:42:51Very beautiful
00:42:52Because the father and the son
00:42:54In the trinity
00:42:55It's the most beautiful unity
00:42:57At the time
00:42:58It was quite hard
00:42:59I was a bit of a
00:43:01Bad boy, I suppose
00:43:02I was in and out of schools
00:43:04Around the area
00:43:05Distracted a lot
00:43:06Trying to be the class clown
00:43:09Very hyper
00:43:10Running around all the time
00:43:12Trying to be the centre of attention
00:43:13Where would you like to be
00:43:15In your relationship
00:43:16With your father?
00:43:17We are taking
00:43:18Kind of baby steps
00:43:19To get to
00:43:20Where I wished I could be
00:43:21With him
00:43:22To be able to
00:43:23You know
00:43:23Sit down and have a chat
00:43:24With him
00:43:24You know, properly
00:43:25I love the humanity
00:43:27You're saying
00:43:27It is mending
00:43:29In small steps
00:43:30Yeah
00:43:31Will this
00:43:32Effect the way
00:43:33You want to be a dad?
00:43:34Definitely
00:43:35I want to be the parents
00:43:36I wish I had
00:43:37Just be a whole better version
00:43:39Of what I wanted
00:43:40Father Liam has
00:43:41A mad dad energy
00:43:43It's okay
00:43:44I'll do it for you
00:43:45It's going to definitely
00:43:46Allow me to
00:43:46Kind of go up to my dad
00:43:48And have a conversation
00:43:48With him
00:43:49And just talk to him
00:43:50About kind of
00:43:50What's been going on
00:43:51In my life
00:43:52And maybe connect with him
00:43:53A little bit more
00:43:54Than I had been before
00:43:55It's good to share
00:43:57Thank you for being so open
00:43:59Thank you so much
00:44:00Thank you so much
00:44:01Father
00:44:01Good
00:44:04Oh
00:44:05Wow
00:44:06So far
00:44:07It's been prayer
00:44:08Eat
00:44:09Work
00:44:09Repeat
00:44:13And now the friars
00:44:15Want to show the lads
00:44:16That they don't have
00:44:17To take their
00:44:17Habits off
00:44:18To have a good time
00:44:20We do enjoy life
00:44:22We celebrate life
00:44:23You know
00:44:25We enjoy the company
00:44:25Of each other
00:44:26We have
00:44:27Great parties
00:44:28In the community
00:44:29Come on
00:44:31Come on
00:44:35The champion is making
00:44:37His way in
00:44:38I want to be back
00:44:38The best table tennis player
00:44:42Between Noel and myself
00:44:44I can say
00:44:46Noel
00:44:47Noel
00:44:52The fact that we bonded
00:44:54So well
00:44:55And we're completely
00:44:56Different people
00:44:56It's just
00:44:58Absolutely insane
00:44:59I've seen someone
00:45:00Have a quick hand
00:45:02And these hedonists
00:45:03Are beginning to see
00:45:04The benefits of living
00:45:05With these holy men
00:45:07A week ago
00:45:08I didn't think that
00:45:10You know
00:45:10We'd be able to get so close
00:45:11And have so much in common
00:45:13Yeah
00:45:14I think the vikers
00:45:16Have got an incline
00:45:18They are vikers
00:45:19So I'm going to
00:45:20Take that
00:45:21And run to the hill
00:45:21With it
00:45:22Thanks
00:45:23Still to come
00:45:27Alright
00:45:28Let's see what you can do today
00:45:30The boys have set
00:45:31Their toughest test yet
00:45:33There was a slight bit of pressure
00:45:34I didn't think I would
00:45:35And Max has an epiphany
00:45:37In a world where you can be anything
00:45:39Be kind
00:45:50Three young men
00:45:51Used to burning their candles
00:45:53At both ends
00:45:54Are settling into their priory stay
00:45:56Good morning
00:45:58Good morning
00:45:59Good morning
00:45:59How are we?
00:46:00After four days of intense religious instruction
00:46:03Father Liam's decided it's time to step things up
00:46:06Today you'll be engaging with something
00:46:09Around supporting those who have little
00:46:12And let's see how that affects and engages you
00:46:15He wants to see if Max, Luke and Alan
00:46:18Can walk the Carmelite walk
00:46:19When the brothers aren't watching
00:46:21We are not here for ourselves
00:46:23The whole purpose of our being here is for others
00:46:28Go on Alan
00:46:29I'm glad I'm only little
00:46:30He's sent them on a secret mission
00:46:32Destination unknown
00:46:34I don't even know who we are
00:46:36We're a church, mate
00:46:37Where's the entrance?
00:46:39Here to reveal all is Gary
00:46:41Whose family run the iColin Smith Foundation
00:46:44Hello, good afternoon
00:46:46Which has helped feed Oxford's homeless for 35 years
00:46:49Let me get you kicked out with some stuff
00:46:52Yeah
00:46:52Let's go
00:46:53And today he has three brand new volunteers
00:46:56For young men more used to the high life than real life
00:47:00Working in Gary's soup kitchen will be a huge test
00:47:03Tie me up
00:47:04Why can't you tie yourself up?
00:47:07It has become like tradition to engage in charity work
00:47:10To help those in need
00:47:12I feel like focusing my time on other people's lives
00:47:16Or what's going on in the world
00:47:17Isn't really something that I'm interested in
00:47:19Have you chopped an onion?
00:47:21I have, yeah, but I don't know what side to cut
00:47:23Before it makes your eyes cry
00:47:24Living in Manchester, there are a lot of homeless people
00:47:27But you get so caught up in your bubble
00:47:29And what you're doing
00:47:29So I sort of, yeah, turn a blind eye to all that
00:47:32So do you do this full-time?
00:47:35What is the script?
00:47:35My mum started it
00:47:36She just felt in her heart
00:47:38Just cooked for people
00:47:39That's what she'd been doing from when she was young
00:47:41And that's what, for you guys
00:47:42Is to know that life isn't just you
00:47:45Life is bigger than what you think it is
00:47:49Homelessness is growing in Oxford
00:47:50But Gary and his family are serving hope
00:47:53One hot meal at a time
00:47:55On average, how many homeless people
00:47:57Do you have in here at one time eating?
00:47:5940
00:47:59All right, wow, a lot
00:48:01Doors open tomorrow
00:48:02So today is all about getting the food ready
00:48:05How do you cook for 40 people, mate?
00:48:07I can't make a breakfast for, like, three of us
00:48:09Yeah
00:48:10Whoever peels the potato the fastest
00:48:12When's...
00:48:13Can I peel two before you peel one?
00:48:15He's going to slice his hand up
00:48:16Got him on the ropes here
00:48:17Watch your fingers, bro
00:48:21How does it, you know, still make you feel
00:48:23After all this time of doing it?
00:48:25So it's not just me
00:48:26This is my wife, my son, my brother
00:48:29My sister
00:48:30They all help
00:48:31Helping other people is what we do
00:48:34In a world where you can be anything
00:48:35Be kind, eh?
00:48:37Back in Manchester
00:48:39Max is at the centre of his social scene
00:48:42I would describe myself as quite outgoing
00:48:44Definitely extroverted
00:48:46Love having a conversation
00:48:47I could talk the back legs off a donkey for hours
00:48:49But he wasn't always so popular
00:48:51School wasn't always sort of sunshine and rainbows
00:48:54It was rough
00:48:57When Max started secondary school
00:48:59He was badly bullied
00:49:01That's you starting school
00:49:03And you look really happy
00:49:04But, like, behind that smile
00:49:06What did you really feel?
00:49:08Yeah, just broken
00:49:09A picture can show
00:49:11A certain image
00:49:13But behind that is
00:49:14A million different stories
00:49:15That no-one is going to know
00:49:17Did you feel safe in school?
00:49:19No, I hated going
00:49:19I just did not want to walk through the gates in the morning
00:49:21It's really sad, isn't it?
00:49:23I would rather have stayed here where I knew nothing could go wrong
00:49:26It was tough
00:49:27Tough few years
00:49:29But you're resilient
00:49:30You're very resilient
00:49:33As crap as it was
00:49:34As rough as it was
00:49:35And how shit I felt
00:49:38It's just made me who I am today
00:49:40I just lived my life
00:49:42Like, I want to live it
00:49:43And just, that's the way it is
00:49:44But Max can be so busy looking after number one
00:49:48He sometimes forgets life's not all about him
00:49:52Being in my, like, sort of
00:49:53Little bubble
00:49:55I sort of turn a blind eye
00:49:57To sort of how other people do live their life
00:49:59But maybe I should just consider
00:50:00Other people a little bit more
00:50:02I guess it does feel good
00:50:04Coming to a community like this
00:50:05And helping them
00:50:07Even though
00:50:08We haven't given anyone food yet or anything
00:50:10It makes you think more outside of
00:50:12The world that you live in
00:50:13Because it's not just you
00:50:13Pay it forward every time
00:50:15It's going to make a massive difference
00:50:16To people
00:50:17I think
00:50:18That's probably what Father Liam wanted us to experience today
00:50:21So, so, so
00:50:22Whatever you learned from this
00:50:23When you take it
00:50:24Don't have to go with that
00:50:25Run with it
00:50:26And pass it on
00:50:27The idea who runs the soup kitchen was, uh
00:50:30So nice
00:50:31You could tell he had
00:50:32So much room
00:50:33For just
00:50:34Love in his heart
00:50:35Well, thanks
00:50:36For coming
00:50:37And if it's okay with you
00:50:39Need you back tomorrow morning
00:50:42This evening
00:50:43Father Liam has a big test for the boys
00:50:45At a local church
00:50:46Where he's often called to minister
00:50:50The parish priest here
00:50:51Has given us access
00:50:52To his church and sanctuary
00:50:54There'll be people there as well
00:50:56Worshipping and honouring God
00:50:58And therefore
00:50:58We're going to go in with that disposition
00:51:00And that, that respect
00:51:04Welcome to the sanctuary
00:51:07Alan, Max and Luke
00:51:08Who will be front and centre
00:51:10Helping out with the Mass
00:51:11And it's vital
00:51:12They don't embarrass
00:51:13Father Liam
00:51:14Or the Brotherhood
00:51:15Before we start Mass
00:51:17This is the lectionary
00:51:18From which
00:51:19Somebody in the congregation
00:51:21Is going to read
00:51:22The Word of God
00:51:23To the people
00:51:24So
00:51:25Alan
00:51:26You'll be taking that out
00:51:27And
00:51:28Max
00:51:29This is
00:51:30The missile
00:51:31Which is placed
00:51:32On the altar
00:51:36All week
00:51:37The boys have struggled
00:51:38To take their prayers seriously
00:51:41Now they must show
00:51:42The respect needed
00:51:43In front of the whole congregation
00:51:46Lamb of God
00:51:48You take away
00:51:49The sins of the world
00:51:50Have mercy on us
00:51:53Father Liam concludes his sermon
00:51:55With a very special message
00:51:58Alan, Max and Luke
00:51:59I pray for each of you
00:52:01That as you've had the courage
00:52:03To come on these days
00:52:04And then carrying out
00:52:05The tasks of these days
00:52:07You've put yourself
00:52:08Out of your comfort zone
00:52:09As we pray
00:52:10For the Holy Spirit
00:52:11To come upon these gifts
00:52:13May it come upon you
00:52:15There was people in there
00:52:16That we'd never met
00:52:17And didn't have a clue
00:52:18We were going to be there
00:52:18And he still singled us out
00:52:20And made us feel special
00:52:22And for your families at home
00:52:23I pray for healing
00:52:26Peace
00:52:27Restoration
00:52:28And strength
00:52:30What he was saying
00:52:31About my family
00:52:31I took that in
00:52:32And that was really lovely
00:52:34And your grace in our lives
00:52:36Through Christ our Lord
00:52:38Amen
00:52:38Even atheist Max
00:52:41Is moved by these
00:52:42Particular prayers
00:52:43Thank you Father Liam
00:52:44And especially
00:52:45I wish that
00:52:46Health and happiness
00:52:47Upon our families
00:52:47I think it touched the spot
00:52:48For us
00:52:49Bless your future
00:52:50And your families
00:52:52Back at the Priory
00:52:53Max is seeing the benefits
00:52:55Of life outside his bubble
00:52:58Nothing here
00:52:59That we've done
00:52:59And nothing about
00:53:00How they live their life
00:53:01Is about I
00:53:02Makes you consider
00:53:03Other people's feelings
00:53:04And what you can do
00:53:05For other people
00:53:06To almost feel better
00:53:07About yourself
00:53:08Whilst Alan's
00:53:09Feeling positive
00:53:10About returning
00:53:10To help feed the homeless
00:53:12If we can help out
00:53:13Just a wee tiny bit
00:53:14For the day
00:53:15Then I'll be more than happy
00:53:16With that
00:53:16And I'm sure
00:53:18Gary will appreciate that
00:53:26Bright and early
00:53:27The boys are eager
00:53:29To return to the soup kitchen
00:53:30To help Gary
00:53:31Memphis on the way
00:53:32Dear
00:53:33Hello
00:53:34Morning
00:53:35But in the kitchen
00:53:36There's no Gary
00:53:38I'm Gary's wife
00:53:41Today Gary's been
00:53:42Rushed into hospital
00:53:44He's been having
00:53:45Some chest pains
00:53:47We had to get
00:53:48The ambulance out
00:53:50To him
00:53:51Sorry to hear that
00:53:51Hope you're all good
00:53:52We've still got
00:53:54Lots to prepare
00:53:55So we're going to
00:53:57Need your help
00:53:58To do as good
00:53:59Of a standard
00:53:59As Gary would normally
00:54:00Do it
00:54:01All right
00:54:01Let's get started
00:54:02Let's go to Gary
00:54:03Yes we'll do it
00:54:04All right
00:54:05Thank you
00:54:06Although Gary's in hospital
00:54:08The soup kitchen
00:54:09Must still open its doors
00:54:10In a few hours
00:54:12We're just going to try
00:54:13And get on with it
00:54:14We're going to make an even better
00:54:15Milton today
00:54:16Aren't we boys
00:54:17Yes
00:54:17Yes we are
00:54:18I'll be feeling
00:54:19Can it soon
00:54:20It means putting all they've learned
00:54:22In the last week
00:54:23To the test
00:54:24All right
00:54:25Let's see what you can do today
00:54:27Because we're on a tight time
00:54:29To be able to get things done
00:54:31Okay
00:54:32Crazy the fact that we was literally
00:54:33Cooking food with him yesterday
00:54:34Just all of a sudden
00:54:35He's in hospital
00:54:36In his normal work life
00:54:38Luke can be unmotivated
00:54:40But today he'll need to focus
00:54:43The boys have got to step up
00:54:45And kind of take charge
00:54:48I feel a slight bit of pressure
00:54:49I didn't think I would
00:54:50We've got to sort of be the men
00:54:52In the kitchen now
00:54:52We've got back shoes to fill
00:54:54Whilst Alan and Max
00:54:55Get to grips with the vegetables
00:54:57Ready
00:54:58Yeah
00:54:58Luke is on cooking duties
00:55:00With Susan
00:55:01Who's volunteered here
00:55:02For the last ten years
00:55:04How does that make you feel
00:55:05It makes me really happy
00:55:07Because I'm giving back to people
00:55:08That aren't fortunate enough
00:55:09To be able to get a meal
00:55:10Hang on
00:55:11Hang on
00:55:12It's your rubber glove
00:55:14Oh my gloves in there
00:55:15Yeah
00:55:15I was a little bit
00:55:16Kind of unbothered
00:55:18By a lot of stuff
00:55:19Before I come here
00:55:20But now
00:55:20I feel like I can
00:55:21Open up inside
00:55:23And actually have that type of emotion
00:55:24I didn't think I had before
00:55:25Which is amazing
00:55:27It's not just Luke
00:55:28Who is finding the positives
00:55:30Of giving back
00:55:31I think
00:55:32The week as a whole
00:55:35It makes you think about things
00:55:38It's maybe taking a step back
00:55:39And realising what I've got
00:55:40In life
00:55:41Just staying a wee bit more grounded
00:55:43In less than 30 minutes
00:55:45The soup kitchen
00:55:46Will open its doors
00:55:47To 40 hungry mouths
00:55:49Put the mushrooms in there
00:55:53As the boys finish off the cooking
00:55:55Father Liam arrives
00:55:57To check on his charges
00:56:06How did you find
00:56:08The lads coming in to help
00:56:10They were very helpful
00:56:12I think it's a good experience for them
00:56:14It's wonderful that you found them
00:56:17Engaging, cooperating
00:56:18Now it's time
00:56:20To serve up
00:56:22We've got some carrots
00:56:23And mushrooms
00:56:24Specially made by us
00:56:25We made these mushrooms
00:56:27This one
00:56:28This week I didn't think
00:56:29That I'd be giving food out
00:56:30To the homeless
00:56:31And know that they've got
00:56:32Their own difficulty
00:56:33Going on in life
00:56:34And they are in need
00:56:35Would you like
00:56:36Some of this
00:56:36Yeah
00:56:37This is today's special
00:56:39Handmade by myself
00:56:40Yeah
00:56:40Enjoy
00:56:41Father Liam has noticed
00:56:43A big shift
00:56:44In the boys' behaviour
00:56:45I think this is
00:56:47A big, beautiful learning
00:56:49From experience
00:56:50From reality
00:56:51Tell me if you want to bet more up
00:56:53When you're hospitable to others
00:56:55You are hospitable to yourself
00:56:57Because the goodness
00:56:59Comes back to you
00:57:00You're transformed from within
00:57:02And that's what's happening
00:57:05To these men
00:57:06And it's such a joy to watch
00:57:08Anything else?
00:57:10You got a drink, aye?
00:57:13In Glasgow there's a lot
00:57:14Of soup kitchens
00:57:15And places where people
00:57:16Can eat if they're homeless
00:57:17And people, especially my age
00:57:20I don't think help as much
00:57:22Do you want some carrots?
00:57:24It's definitely something
00:57:25That I did say
00:57:26That I would try
00:57:27And take into my life
00:57:28And would you like a drink?
00:57:30But as the dinner service
00:57:31Comes to an end
00:57:33Mushrooms
00:57:34Max is nowhere to be seen
00:57:36Are you happy for me
00:57:37To sort of freestyle
00:57:38Or do you know roughly
00:57:39What you want?
00:57:39Tied it like half an inch
00:57:41Off the top really
00:57:41Yeah, no worries at all
00:57:42That's the bless
00:57:44Outside, he's come up
00:57:45With his own kind of hospitality
00:57:47By offering his barbering skills
00:57:49To lunch guest Adam
00:57:50And how long have you found yourself
00:57:52In this situation for?
00:57:53If you don't mind me asking
00:57:54Gosh, the past
00:57:56Few years
00:57:57Has been a bit rocky
00:57:59And a bit on and off
00:58:00And a bit
00:58:00A bit stressful really
00:58:02Well look, I'm here as well
00:58:04To help today
00:58:04So I think the social side
00:58:06To it is massive
00:58:06So you're not just
00:58:07Coming down for food
00:58:08To stop you
00:58:08Making you feel
00:58:09A bit lonely
00:58:10And a bit
00:58:11Not sure what to do
00:58:12100%
00:58:13Sometimes that's all it takes
00:58:14To alleviate someone's problems
00:58:16You know
00:58:16Just to have a conversation
00:58:17With someone
00:58:19For me, the highlight of my day
00:58:21Was cutting Adam's hair
00:58:21And it's just a lovely feeling
00:58:25They feel good
00:58:26And we feel good
00:58:27That we've helped them
00:58:27So, yeah
00:58:28It was lovely to be fair
00:58:30Where do these go?
00:58:31With all three
00:58:32Taking something
00:58:33From their experience
00:58:34At the soup kitchen
00:58:35There's good news
00:58:36From the hospital
00:58:38Gary's on the mend
00:58:39Fingers crossed
00:58:40That Gary makes a recovery
00:58:41But hopefully
00:58:42Yeah, we made him proud
00:58:43In the kitchen today
00:58:43With Yvonne
00:58:44And everything went to plan
00:58:45Really nice
00:58:46Happy?
00:58:47Yeah, Emma
00:58:48100%
00:58:49Good
00:58:49Good to meet you, bro
00:58:50Respect, man
00:58:52I'm out
00:58:53Peace
00:58:55Guess I'm out at all
00:58:58I appreciate
00:58:59Like, the work
00:59:00That people do
00:59:01Just like
00:59:02Out of their own pocket
00:59:03And more out of
00:59:05The kindness
00:59:05Of their own heart
00:59:06Which
00:59:06Is pretty meaningful
00:59:08From everything I've learnt
00:59:09Being in this
00:59:10This priory
00:59:11Is knowing that
00:59:12Giving back to others
00:59:13Is something
00:59:14That's so, so important
00:59:15I've not felt
00:59:17A feeling like that
00:59:21Before
00:59:21Still to come
00:59:25The lads and friars
00:59:27Raise a little hell
00:59:30And have an unexpected
00:59:32Night to remember
00:59:40It's the end of the lads' stay
00:59:42At the priory
00:59:43But they're not the only ones
00:59:44Looking forward to celebrating
00:59:45The friars have big plans
00:59:48An ideal night out for me
00:59:49Would be
00:59:50Get a little bit pissed
00:59:51And then
00:59:52We'd go out
00:59:53To the rave
00:59:54Maybe meet a few girls
00:59:55Have some good fun with them
00:59:57You can have a good night anywhere
00:59:58Whether you're drunk or sober
01:00:00But I say that
01:00:01Most of the time
01:00:01It is drunk
01:00:05Look at this
01:00:07It may be a Friday night out
01:00:09On the town
01:00:10But this surprise trip
01:00:11Is a far cry
01:00:12From the boys' usual
01:00:13Nocturnal pursuits
01:00:14Let the game start
01:00:16Someone want to pick us
01:00:17A team name
01:00:17The lads and friars
01:00:19Have spent the week
01:00:20Growing closer
01:00:20But tonight
01:00:21The battle lines
01:00:23Are redrawn
01:00:23The holy goats
01:00:25Holy goats
01:00:26Yeah
01:00:26Score
01:00:27Let's do that
01:00:27Greatest of all time
01:00:28You know
01:00:33And though they might not
01:00:35Look like your average
01:00:36Bowling team
01:00:39The friars have a secret weapon
01:00:42Father Shiju
01:00:47Siju said he had never played before
01:00:49But surprisingly
01:00:50He's an actual
01:00:57Bowl after bowl after bowl
01:00:59Strike after strike after strike
01:01:00He's unbelievable
01:01:01I did not think he'd be like that
01:01:06Many who come to our community
01:01:08Say they've never experienced
01:01:10A more joyful, happy community
01:01:12Because we're always laughing
01:01:14We're always cracking each other up
01:01:16It's a happy community
01:01:19After six days together
01:01:21Everyone's feeling the brotherly love
01:01:23The first day going into it
01:01:24It was a wee bit serious
01:01:26I think with all the prayers
01:01:28And stuff like that
01:01:30Again they're just people like us
01:01:31And they enjoy having fun like us
01:01:33So it's changed their mind
01:01:34And the friars
01:01:35What an experience
01:01:36Something that I probably
01:01:38Wouldn't have ever thought
01:01:39Going into this week
01:01:40But yeah it was class man
01:01:42Who knew that I would be here this week
01:01:44At a bowling alley with friars
01:01:46And just having like the funniest time
01:01:48I've had in a while
01:01:52Strike strike strike
01:01:53Strike strike
01:02:00I've never seen a group of people
01:02:02That are so happy to be
01:02:03Together
01:02:06They have really shared our life
01:02:09Entered our life
01:02:10And we're delighted to share it with them
01:02:12And it even looks like the friars temperance
01:02:15Has rubbed off on the boys
01:02:18I've won lager
01:02:19And I called it a day
01:02:20So you know
01:02:21New me
01:02:22A few months ago today
01:02:27I would have probably said to the boys
01:02:29I think there's a few clubs around here
01:02:30Let's just go out
01:02:31Have a good night
01:02:31But nah
01:02:32That's not how I'm feeling tonight
01:02:39That night was epic
01:02:44Alan, Luke and Max
01:02:46Thank you so much
01:02:47For sharing the evening with us
01:02:48Thank you
01:02:49I must say it has been so enjoyable
01:02:51And for us we've discovered a champion amongst us
01:02:58At 9pm
01:02:59Father Alex calls time
01:03:01And the friars and lads head back to the priory
01:03:03But there is one final surprise in store
01:03:07Now we did it in between the bars
01:03:09Left right, middle left
01:03:15If you would have told me a week ago
01:03:16I'd be doing the cha-cha-slide with 9 friars around me
01:03:19I would have said
01:03:19You're having me on
01:03:21Go Alan, go Alan, go Alan, go Alan
01:03:26Go Alan, go Alan
01:03:27Go Alan, go Alan
01:03:39Right, well I guess it's time we get packed
01:03:44After a week of living the life of a Carmelite friar
01:03:48It's time for the boys to return to their normal lives
01:03:51I'm going to try and change quite a few things in my life
01:03:53I think when I get back
01:03:55One, definitely going out
01:03:56I don't feel like I need to do that as much anymore
01:03:59This week's made me want to take a more serious approach to life
01:04:02It's just made me like actually want to just focus on stuff
01:04:05Like now I've got things in my mind that I want to do when I get back
01:04:08And just fully lock in and do it
01:04:14In my life it's always 100 million miles an hour
01:04:18Like I'm always doing something
01:04:19There's never really a time to switch off
01:04:21I never sit down and take a minute to appreciate life
01:04:24To disconnect from social media
01:04:27And the digital world has been so refreshing
01:04:30After the full week the distractions have stopped
01:04:33I'm in a good mindset in terms of that
01:04:35It's been good man, I've loved it
01:04:43I think I've just learned to be more understanding
01:04:48You know life's not always about you
01:04:49And there's bigger problems out there
01:04:52If anything everything we've done this week
01:04:53Is just solidified that
01:04:56Selfish is just one of the worst things you can be
01:04:59And for me cutting Adam's hair
01:05:01Was the biggest and most rewarding moment for me
01:05:04Which made me think you know
01:05:05Doing something like that makes you feel so good
01:05:07Why would you not do it every day
01:05:12We've had an open hearted week
01:05:15And I pray that the blessing
01:05:17And the germinating hope in us
01:05:20Is passed on to them
01:05:23After six days of abstinence
01:05:25The lads finally get their phones back
01:05:28It's been a long week
01:05:29It is
01:05:30Thank you
01:05:31Thank you very much
01:05:33It's been the most educational, funniest, strangest, abnormal week of my life
01:05:39Yeah, I wouldn't change any of it, I don't think
01:05:42Anyway guys, we'll see you, it's alright
01:05:44I will definitely take a lot of things out of this
01:05:47It's been an amazing life experience
01:05:48Thank you all for having us, it's been amazing
01:05:53I believe they are leaving us with quite a number of treasures
01:05:57In the sense that they have explored another way of life
01:06:01I would think they are taking their way
01:06:03Being more intentional and focused
01:06:07As the young men left this afternoon
01:06:09There was a certain sadness
01:06:11The sadness of a family without child
01:06:20Next time
01:06:21Which one's the best for you?
01:06:22Three pampered young Brits who try not to lift a finger
01:06:25The only manual labour I'm doing is holding up a phone
01:06:28Bunk down a Wild West cowboy ranch
01:06:31As long as you can stay on the horse
01:06:33You're probably going to survive
01:07:03Ahhhh
