Watch the highlights of stage 8 of the Giro d'Italia 2026, which took place on 16/05/2026.

The Giro d’Italia is one of the most prestigious cycling tours in existence. After last year’s thrilling battle, in which Simon Yates defeated Richard Carapaz and Isaac del Toro, the peloton returns for another three weeks of top-level racing. Jonas Vingegaard, representing Team Visma–Lease a Bike, will be aiming to claim his first Giro title. The 24-year-old Giulio Pellizzari will try to stop him, as will Derek Gee-West, Felix Gall, Enric Mas, and Adam Yates, who would no doubt love to follow in his brother’s footsteps. With plenty of opportunities for both sprinters and attacking riders, everything is in place for three weeks of thrilling and unpredictable racing!

00:08Buongiorno!
00:09È molto bello di essere qui, ovviamente.
00:11Ma stiamo rascendo molto bene,
00:13quindi c'è ancora più opportunità,
00:16come oggi.
00:17Abbiamo chiesto il breakaway.
00:20Obviamente, è il giro,
00:22e voglio finire con tutti i tre,
00:24quindi potrebbe essere un'opportunità per oggi.
00:26E vediamo cosa succede.
00:30E qual'è il tuo main rider?
00:32Per oggi, Wout Pulse.
00:33Credo che c'è stata una grande opportunità per il break,
00:35quindi sarà difficile per andare in,
00:37ma dovremmo provare, e poi vediamo cosa succede.
00:41La legge è ancora più pesante,
00:42da l'esercitazione brutale all'esercitazione di Blockhouse.
00:45Un'esercitazione si è infatti a l'esercitazione
00:47sull'esercitazione,
00:48dopo più di 6 giorni di raccoglione,
00:50da l'esercitazione dell'esercitazione,
00:52da l'esercitazione all'esercitazione di Jonas Vingegaard.
00:54Abbiamo già un po' di un'esercitazione,
00:56quindi,
00:58credo che ho recuperato bene,
00:59e la legge si sono molto bene oggi.
01:00Il danese rider,
01:02winner of two Tour de France titles
01:03and a Vuelta,
01:04launched his attack on the climb to Blockhouse.
01:16Dropping a courageous
01:17but overly ambitious Pelizzari
01:19who tried to match his pace,
01:21and then calmly controlled
01:22the strong Felix Gal,
01:24who finished second just 13 seconds behind.
01:27First, I was a bit frustrated I couldn't follow Jonas,
01:30but I think then in the end it was a good choice to listen to my body.
01:34Portugal's Afonso Eulaglio
01:35defended the pink jersey with pride and intelligence,
01:38crossing the line 2 minutes and 54 seconds down,
01:41but holding on to the overall lead.
01:43Those who still have something left in the tank can unleash it in today's stage.
01:48The first part runs along wide flat roads by the Adriatic coast,
01:52before heading inland towards Fermo,
01:54where a relentless series of rolling climbs and steep walls await.
01:58After Cupra Maritima, the race turns inland to tackle two categorized climbs,
02:03first Montefiori del Aso, then Monte Rubiano.
02:06Upon reaching Fermo, riders face the sharp wall of Via Cartarelli,
02:10followed by the Capodarco climb,
02:11home to the renowned international under-23 race,
02:14once won by riders like Rubio, Zana and Hindley.
02:17The final kick from Fermo to Reputolo,
02:20with gradients reaching up to 22%,
02:22offers the perfect terrain for breakaways and bold attacks
02:25from anyone aiming for the stage win.
02:27All eyes will be on local rider Giulio Bellizzari,
02:31racing on home roads.
02:32It's always beautiful to go home,
02:33I feel so much to the fans,
02:34we hope that today we can enjoy it with the sun.
02:37If he recovers from yesterday's effort,
02:39he could be a key protagonist.
02:46The start is nervous, the pace is stop and go,
02:53with many riders eager to break away.
02:55The first attempt involves a group of six.
03:09The move proves to be overly ambitious as the peloton reels them back in,
03:14but immediately Filippo Gana and Alberto Betiol counter-attack.
03:18It's unlikely that a two-man breakaway will succeed,
03:21yet the two leaders work well together,
03:23taking regular turns and committing to the effort.
03:37after 30 kilometers of racing the average speed is up to 53 kilometers per hour.
03:42An extremely high pace,
03:45driven by continuous attacks from riders trying to bridge across from the peloton.
03:49Gana and Betiol, both strong-time trialists,
03:52have the power to hold their advantage at around 30 seconds.
03:55Meanwhile, at the front of the peloton,
03:57there's a heavy crash involving a rider from Team Q36.5 Pro Cycling,
04:02number 112, Fabio Christen.
04:04There's where it happened.
04:05He looked back.
04:06He looked back.
04:07Yeah, I agree.
04:08I think that does look a little bit like Mark Donovan,
04:09but it looks like a shake of the head there.
04:11That looks like a collarbone.
04:12His withdrawal is confirmed shortly after.
04:30At kilometer 53, the breakaway of Gana and Betiol comes to an end.
04:34The peloton catches them and continues at a pace that,
04:37after an hour of racing, remains above 50 kilometers per hour.
04:41A strong headwind with powerful gusts,
04:43makes it difficult for anyone trying to stretch the groove.
04:46The attacks are becoming less and less convincing.
04:49The conditions are not right for a breakaway with real chances of success.
04:53Despite this, the riders keep trying.
04:58We are at the km 74 of the race.
05:03We are always on track.
05:04Now there's a group of 7 units,
05:06but the margin is always limited.
05:11The peloton splits into two sections, separated by 10 seconds,
05:16with Birg, Narvaez and Legnesund gaining an advantage.
05:19Wingegaard's team, caught in the second group,
05:21works to bridge the gap and manages to rejoin.
05:23Now around 20 riders launch a move to chase down the three leaders.
05:30The front riders reach the intermediate sprint in Kupura Maritima.
05:35Legnesund crosses first, ahead of Narvaez and Birg.
05:42The first part of the peloton, about 30 riders, passes 55 miles per hour.
05:43Meanwhile, the climb to the king of the mountains at Montefiore del Aso begins,
05:47and behind them the pink jersey group pushes to close in on the chasers.
06:00The air crests the climb first, ahead of Narvaez and Legnesund.
06:04The first part of the peloton, about 30 riders, passes 55 seconds behind,
06:09while the group with the pink jersey is at 2 minutes and 2 seconds.
06:20The three breakaway riders have found the right rhythm,
06:23and arrive alone at the second king of the mountains of the day in Monte Rubiano,
06:27where Narvaez crosses first ahead of Birg and Legnesund.
06:30They're still leading as they pass under the Red Bull KM banner,
06:34with Birg, Legnesund and Narvaez in that order.
06:37The three laps of the road are at the kilometre Red Bull.
06:42Having a little bit of far better legs than the other two
06:45because of the first half of the stage he was caught.
06:52Meanwhile, Javier Romo has attacked from the chasing group,
06:55trying to bridge the gap to the leaders.
06:57At the Red Bull KM, he is 50 seconds behind.
07:01At 1 minute and 20 seconds, a group of around 30 riders led by Garofoli follows,
07:06while the pink jersey group passes at 3 minutes and 38 seconds.
07:10Among the chasers is also Scaroni, currently 11th in the general classification.
07:15The climb to Capodarko begins.
07:26Narvaez's move is impressive.
07:28He waves goodbye, pushes hard on the steep slopes of Capodarko,
07:32and crosses first at the king of the mountains,
07:34with a 12 second lead over Legnesund and 35 seconds over Birg.
07:44The chasing group, which has reabsorbed Romo,
07:47passes at 1 minute and 40 seconds,
07:49while the pink jersey group is at 3 minutes and 33 seconds.
07:53Narvaez powers up the Muro di Via Reputola,
07:56the final brutal climb of the day.
07:58He crests the summit and flies solo towards the finish line in Fermo.
08:07In a race that could have been a disaster for UAE Team Emirates,
08:10it's win number 3 for the team and 2 for Jonathan Narvaez,
08:16a masterclass, simply unbeatable on terrain like that.
08:26We win! Yeah!
08:32Second place goes to Andreas Legnesund after a courageous ride,
08:36with Ciotta finishing third.
08:38The pink jersey group regains ground and crosses the line together,
08:42with all the GC contenders led by Afonso Lallio,
08:45who retain the pink jersey ahead of Wingergaard at 3 minutes 15 seconds
08:49and Gal at 3 minutes 34 seconds.
08:52The most important for me now is a ride in a rest day with this Maria Rosa, no?
08:57The most important thing is to stay with the Maria Rosa ATT.
09:01Tomorrow brings more climbing,
09:03with a 184-kilometer stage from Serbia to Cornaal Escale.
09:07The route is flat from the start to Silla,
09:09before the final first-category climb that will once again shape the general classification.
09:13It's an irregular ascent with easier sections,
09:17followed by the final 12 kilometers entirely uphill with bends and hairpins.
09:22In the last 3 kilometers towards Cornaal Escale gradients hover around 10%,
09:26with ramps reaching up to 15%,
09:29the final effort before a well-earned rest day on Monday.
09:43four-题欄 at 9000 feet.
