00:00In a half hour at 6 o'clock on Grant and Danny, we'll give away tickets to see Russell Peters.
00:06You've got to be listening in 30 minutes right here on The Fan.
00:10Thank you for making the show part of your day.
00:12We appreciate that.
00:15The Christmas Day schedule is out, and it is a doozy.
00:21Remember when Christmas Day used to be about presents?
00:25Or I guess even before that, like a holiday?
00:28Uh-huh, uh-huh.
00:28My wife would be upset if I said, remember when Christmas Day was about presents?
00:32It's about more than that.
00:33It's about bigger and better things.
00:35Sure, sure.
00:36You remember before football was on Christmas?
00:38Yeah, I do.
00:38And the NBA thought they owned a day?
00:41How precious is that?
00:43The Christmas schedule, Danny.
00:45May I present to you Texans at Eagles on Christmas Eve night?
00:50Go on.
00:51Christmas Eve night, as you're baking your chocolate chip cookies for the big fella,
00:56with a little milk set out by the fireplace.
01:01A potential Super Bowl matchup.
01:04Houston, Philadelphia.
01:06We're burning one of the really good ones on Christmas Eve.
01:09The league knows they're going to have a captive audience.
01:11But now we've taken over Christmas Eve.
01:14We've got Christmas Day.
01:16We've got Boxing Day.
01:16Hey, what don't we have?
01:18Your triple header on Christmas Day.
01:21Guess who's spending Christmas together?
01:23Matt LaFleur and Ben Johnson.
01:25The rivalry that is taking over the NFC North.
01:30Packers-Bears game one of three on Christmas Day, Danny.
01:34We're not doing two games on Christmas Day.
01:37Middle of the day, Bills-Broncos representing the AFC.
01:40Two playoff teams, Bo Nix, Josh Allen, Sean Payton,
01:44and a now newly put-together coaching staff for the Buffalo Bills.
01:50And then your nightcap, Rams-Seahawks powerhouses from the NFC West.
01:55Those are the games of the year last year.
01:57You just go, these are the two best teams.
01:59They'll play again at some point.
02:00That's going to decide who gets to win the Super Bowl.
02:02And here they are.
02:03The Rams, the odds-on favorite now.
02:04What do we think about the league running through some of its best artillery?
02:10I mean, they are setting aside the three best fireworks they got for Christmas Day.
02:15They know where you are, and that's at home,
02:17or in a place where you're not doing a whole heck of a lot.
02:19You woke up way too early.
02:20You sipped your coffee while your kids tore through whatever the presents are.
02:24You've walked the thing, assembled the thing.
02:25Now you're tired, and they know they got you.
02:28You're not going anywhere.
02:29You're going to turn on that television set and sit your buttocks down
02:32and watch a dozen hours of the foosballs.
02:34That's A-plus schedule-making.
02:37I mean, Texans-Eagles is pretty elite.
02:39Packers-Bears, awesome divisional game.
02:42Rams-Seahawks, same tier, awesome divisional game.
02:45Bills-Broncos, in conference, two teams that could be vying for top seeds in the AFC.
02:52I love that day of football.
02:55Let's not wait.
02:56Let's just fast forward.
02:57Let's get to Christmas.
02:58I'll do that.
02:59The Thanksgiving window we could get into is very, very good as well.
03:04But it used to be that the philosophy I felt like from the league was,
03:10you're watching that day anyway.
03:12We don't have to use our best games.
03:14I mean, the paradigm shift here seems loud to me.
03:17Because you don't need to get anyone to sit in front of the TV.
03:23They're already there.
03:24Just throw a couple of mech games in there.
03:26Here's your Thanksgiving window.
03:28Three straight days now, by the way.
03:30They're just taking these holidays.
03:32Yeah, Wednesday night, Thursday, then Black Friday.
03:34Thanksgiving Eve.
03:35Thanksgiving, triple header, Black Friday.
03:37Five games, three days.
03:39So on Thanksgiving, you tell me this is better than Christmas.
03:42Packers, Rams, two former Redskins assistants here with LaFleur and McVay.
03:46Very good friends.
03:47Perennial playoff teams in the NFC.
03:49That's a Netflix exclusive on Thanksgiving Eve.
03:53Thanksgiving night, or day rather, I guess we'll work our way tonight.
03:57You have the early game, noon or one, whatever they decide.
03:59Bears, Lions, CBS.
04:02That's good football.
04:04That's the two teams that are the most likely to win the NFC North, I would say.
04:07With the Packers, who played the night before.
04:10Then you get Eagles, Cowboys.
04:12The two favorites in the NFC East in the 430 window.
04:15And then one of the games of the year every single year.
04:18If you're ranking, I don't think this is overstated, Danny.
04:21Like every NFL game on the schedule every season,
04:24Bills, Chiefs is always one of the first that the execs fight over.
04:27Because it's the two best quarterbacks, Allen and Mahomes.
04:30And it's the two teams that have kind of fought for supremacy in the AFC for the longest.
04:34Chiefs-Bills is the nightcap on Thanksgiving.
04:37And then on Black Friday the following day, this is a big drop-off, I think.
04:41But it's still compelling because it's the Steelers, Broncos, and Pittsburgh.
04:45What change do you think?
04:47Because your point is right.
04:48And we were talking about this yesterday with the international games.
04:50I get not exporting nothing but, you know, Browns, Jaguars to them overseas, and that's that.
04:57You've got to give up some good inventory.
04:59I wonder what change.
05:00Do you think it's because the TV contracts got so massive and they have a say in it, too?
05:05They're going, listen, we're going to pay you X number of billions.
05:07You can't just give us Browns, Titans.
05:11Yes, but I don't think it's the TV contracts, right?
05:13I think the relationships with CBS, Fox, NBC, they're fine.
05:16I think it's that the streaming services are new and they're paying insane amounts of money.
05:23So if I'm getting in on standalone football on Thanksgiving Eve and I'm Netflix, you're not giving me Browns, Dolphins.
05:32I want Packers, Rams, the Black Friday game all by itself with America watching, Amazon Prime spending all of that
05:41money
05:42because they're going to have their own commercials of all the products that you can buy.
05:46They want everyone to stay home and watch football on Black Friday because if you're not leaving your house to
05:50go to the store,
05:51you might just sit on your laptop on your fat tookus and you might start spending some money there.
05:58That's their goal.
05:59Send it via Prime.
06:00And so they want a really good game.
06:02Now, they got an okay one.
06:03I think Broncos, Steelers is solid.
06:06But of all the games we've talked about on Christmas and Thanksgiving, that's probably the weakest.
06:09And that Black Friday game so far has been for whatever reason.
06:13It's been fairly pedestrian comparatively.
06:15But it's not even just how good the games are.
06:18It's the spreading of the tentacles over the holidays.
06:21As someone who, when the NFL's on, I watch, I am becoming a worse husband.
06:28I acknowledge this.
06:29My wife's listening.
06:31I'm sorry.
06:32I love you.
06:34But football is on.
06:36I am becoming a worse father, a worse son and brother.
06:42I'm hanging out with people on these days.
06:45I got aunts and uncles and people I've married into that are probably, when they leave the house, going,
06:49what has gotten into Grant?
06:51What is the matter with Grant?
06:52He is such a rude guy now.
06:54I promise I haven't changed at all.
06:57It's just that more football is on.
06:58They just put it on the television.
06:59They just won't leave me alone.
07:00That's the only change.
07:01That's the catalyst for this.
07:02You just can't expect the Bears to be playing the Lions and Ben Johnson's offense to be humming
07:07up and down the field in a revenge game against the Detroit Lions
07:11and not expect me on Thanksgiving Day to watch all three hours of that.
07:16You can't expect the Eagles to be in Dallas vying for one of the top spots in the division
07:21and not expect me to watch every second of that football game.
07:24And if you think, come Thanksgiving night on Thursday at 8.30,
07:28as I'm laid up, my stomach's hurting, I've eaten way too much mashed potato,
07:33you think I'm not going to watch the Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills?
07:37You got another thing coming to you.
07:38So I'll try to have a conversation with you when I can.
07:41I'm going to pay you a little bit of attention.
07:43Let's squeeze in the catch-up time during halftime.
07:46Let's have, let's have, what are you guys, the new job?
07:49How is it, like, are you guys, so are you happy there?
07:52How does it compare to your old, oh, sorry, kickoff.
07:54Like, let's get it in.
07:55Don't blame me.
07:57Blame the National Football League.
07:59They know what they're doing.
08:00They won't blame the NFL.
08:02It just keeps getting better.
08:04But it's more and it's more and it's more.
08:07I can tell, like, my wife loves football.
08:09Loves it.
08:09It works well for us.
08:12If not for her love of football,
08:14A, I don't think she would have found me nearly as appealing or interesting.
08:17So we probably wouldn't have been married to begin with.
08:18But B, this relationship would not work.
08:20There's just too much football.
08:22If you didn't kind of like it and understand that.
08:25I can tell.
08:26She won't admit it.
08:27She thinks the football on the holidays thing is getting out of control.
08:31Even her.
08:32I think she's at a point where she's kind of getting tired of it.
08:35Like, it was cute when it was two games on Thanksgiving,
08:39a game on Christmas Eve every couple of years,
08:41if it fell on a Saturday or a Sunday or whatever.
08:45But now, Thanksgiving Eve, NFL took it.
08:49Thanksgiving.
08:50NFL goes three deep all day long.
08:52Black Friday.
08:53Hours two.
08:54They just won't leave anybody alone.
08:56So to quantify it or categorize it,
08:58you think your wife is getting to that point?
09:00Like, she's getting to the point where she's like,
09:01okay, that's enough?
09:02I think my wife won't admit it out loud,
09:04but if I gave her truth serum or one of those lie detector tests
09:09from Meet the Fockers,
09:11and I said, would you like fewer football games on Thanksgiving and Christmas,
09:15she would say yes.
09:17So if your wife is getting there,
09:19my wife is there with the Ovechkin family luggage.
09:22Like, she's been there.
09:23Like, the incredulous nature of the question,
09:27where she'll ask, wait, another game is on?
09:29As if, not as if, oh, another game's on?
09:31Oh, here's some information.
09:33There's another game?
09:34It's not asking because you're just discovering it.
09:37It's stunned, irritated disbelief and frustration
09:41as if I made the schedule.
09:43You're the problem.
09:44I did it.
09:45Paul's in Woodbridge.
09:46Hello, Paul.
09:47How are you?
09:49Gentlemen, how are you doing today?
09:50Good, dude.
09:52Hey, Grant, I feel your angst,
09:54but, you know, at the end of the day,
09:57you're bringing home the bacon,
09:58and you're all about sports.
10:00So if anyone's giving you a hard time,
10:02all you have to do is look over and just say,
10:04I'm working here.
10:06So don't get me wrong, Paul.
10:08I have used that excuse a time or two.
10:10It is a very nice club to have in the old golf bag for me and Danny.
10:14So we're not watching Bravo tonight.
10:15I've got to watch this for work.
10:17You know what I mean?
10:17I've pulled out that card.
10:19And my wife is the best.
10:20She's the real MVP.
10:23You know, Kevin Durant style.
10:24She's never said, what are you doing?
10:26Why are you still watching this game?
10:28Why are you such a fat tub of goo?
10:30She could say these things whenever she wants to.
10:32She chooses not to say these things,
10:33which is very nice of her.
10:35She's probably thinking them,
10:37but she's not saying them.
10:38But yes, there are people that don't know the same amount, right?
10:42Passerbys, let's say.
10:43People that, you know, are related to her, maybe.
10:47Let's say her mom, maybe.
10:48Like a mother-in-law.
10:49It's like, why is Grant just sat in front of the TV the entire day?
10:54Like, where is he?
10:55It's Sunday.
10:55He's not going to say hi to anyone?
10:57No, he's in the basement watching football.
10:59But he was doing that at 11 a.m.
11:01And there was a London game.
11:02And, you know, 1 p.m.
11:04And 3 p.m.
11:04And 5 p.m.
11:05And 8 p.m.
11:06And now it's 9 p.m.
11:06And all day long, football, football, football.
11:09And I use that excuse.
11:11And it's an explanation, not an excuse.
11:13It's our job.
11:14Not everybody.
11:15It still doesn't feel very good.
11:17Yeah.
11:18Because I know that I'm useless in the fall.
11:20And you know it.
11:21Everyone knows it.
11:22Oh, I know it.
11:22It just doesn't feel that good.
11:23You don't want to be useless.
11:25Tim's in Haymarket.
11:26Hey, Tim.
11:27What's up, guys?
11:28How are you doing today?
11:29Good, buddy.
11:30I'm on the camp of too much football.
11:34Like, I don't give a crap about the international games if it's not D.C.
11:38playing.
11:38Like, I'm not going to wake up at 9 o'clock to watch those games.
11:41Don't care.
11:42Christmas Day games, don't care.
11:44Not the Redskins.
11:45Don't care.
11:46Like, the NFL is too much on TV.
11:48And it's making me dislike the NFL more and more.
11:52Whoa.
11:53Now, you're not alone.
11:55But I would say there aren't a lot of you.
11:57It's too much.
11:57Like, the games aren't good.
11:58The players are tired.
12:00But, Tim.
12:00Like, they don't have enough time to recover.
12:02Two days.
12:03Like, it's crazy.
12:05I have a question, Tim.
12:06It's too much.
12:07And I like the call, and I think you're a great guy.
12:10How does it feel to be so incredibly wrong?
12:13I love that you're excited for the NFL.
12:17I'm just messing with you.
12:17I love it.
12:18So, let me ask you a serious question, though.
12:19It's too much.
12:20You're saying the NFL is not your thing?
12:23The amount of it that they consider to be primetime games is too much.
12:28Like, last Christmas, I mean, before the season, everyone was excited for Redskins on Christmas.
12:34The game sucked.
12:36Bill, 74-yard touchdown run.
12:39Everyone was hurt, though.
12:41True.
12:42The game sucked.
12:42You wanted Jaden Daniels on Christmas.
12:44Well, if the standard was that the game doesn't suck in Daniels' plays, their entire season was pretty bad then.
12:50It wasn't just Christmas Day.
12:51And they were on standalone games, and everyone in the country had to watch the bad Redskins.
12:56That's true.
12:57I think you're talking about multiple different things.
12:58I'm with you, and I hate primetime games.
13:00They should all be at 1 o'clock just on a television in my house that's black and white, a
13:04screen that's eight inches around.
13:06I'm with you on that.
13:07But your point about the primetime stuff, there are a couple people that feel that way.
13:13We work with one who screams a lot of things down the hall, who's like, hey, it's too much overreach.
13:19They'll lose a couple of you, maybe.
13:21But they know what they're about.
13:23They get it.
13:23They are taking all the primetime slots away from the regular folks.
13:27Mike in Alexandria, what's good?
13:31Good afternoon, gentlemen.
13:33First of all, thank you very much for making my afternoons much better.
13:38And I'm with you guys.
13:40More football is good.
13:42More good.
13:43But what you're not talking about is I am a cheap old man.
13:48And I refuse to be paying that kind of money for all of these different services.
13:55So what are those games am I not going to be able to see?
13:58How much would it cost me if I wanted to get every one of those crazy services that are out
14:04there to watch all those games?
14:06So I'm going to answer the second question after the break.
14:09We're up against it.
14:09I started to cut you off.
14:10I will give you your answer first, though.
14:12The Thanksgiving Eve game, Packers-Rams, is a Netflix exclusive.
14:16So if you don't have Netflix, you can't watch that one.
14:18So we'll start with that.
14:19The Black Friday game after Thanksgiving on Friday is an Amazon exclusive.
14:24So if you don't have Amazon, you don't get that one.
14:26The Christmas Eve game, Texans-Eagles, Amazon exclusive.
14:30You need Amazon to watch.
14:31And then all three of the games on Christmas.
14:34Well, I shouldn't say that.
14:35Two of the games of the three on Christmas, Packers-Bears and Bills-Broncos, are on Netflix.
14:40So that is a total of five of the combined nine games that are on apps.
14:48I'll get you the total number you need to watch all the games, because I've seen that number floating around
14:51when we return.
14:53But five games on apps, Danny.
14:54Five.
14:55For my guy, I'm also a cheap old man.
14:57I don't like doing this.
15:00You've got to do it to watch the footballs.
15:02That's what you've got to do now.
15:03What are you going to do?
15:04Grant and Danny on the show.
