Grant & Danny react to the breaking news where Myles Garrett will head to the Rams in exchange for a massive haul for the Browns.
Transcript
00:00and you knew the National Football League was going to deliver, didn't you?
00:03Matter of time, right?
00:04June 1 on the calendar is one of those dates in the NFL
00:07that typically spurs action anyway.
00:09We're going to see an A.J. Brown blockbuster very likely in the next 24 hours,
00:14according to Adam Schefter, as the Eagles are going to be moving him,
00:18almost certainly to the Patriots.
00:19We'll see if another team tries to be a fly in the ointment in the hours ahead.
00:23But before Schefter could break that story, he had some business to tend to.
00:27As we found out this afternoon, future Hall of Famer,
00:31Defensive Player of the Year, in waiting, Miles Garrett,
00:35who's won two of the last three DPOY awards for the Cleveland Browns,
00:38coming off of an NFL record 23 sacks and an incredible 33 TFLs this season,
00:44is on the move at 30 years old, traded to the Los Angeles Rams,
00:49who continue to live by their philosophy, bleep them picks.
00:54The window is open, and you've got how much, you know,
00:57it's the sands of the hourglass have turned over on Matt Stafford.
01:00Remember last year, we weren't even sure he was going to be able to play at all
01:03when they couldn't practice back-to-back days or get through a full one.
01:07And he made it.
01:08It was the MVP.
01:08He had a great season.
01:09But you know you've got a shot clock there.
01:11When you've got veterans, you've got Puka Nakua's contract due,
01:14you've got stars at the Yang.
01:16The future is not, that's not a word.
01:18It's now.
01:19And they are in a now moment.
01:21But they are also, to your point, the team that pulled off the Matt Stafford deal,
01:26which when I was racking my brain right before we came on the air,
01:29for the last trade that was this significant a blockbuster in the NFL,
01:33the best I could come up with was Stafford for golf in a one.
01:37There was some other stuff in that deal.
01:39But that was one of those stop you in your tracks,
01:42remember where you were when you heard about it, crazy NFL trades.
01:45Because you don't see good starter for good starter at the quarterback position ever.
01:50But at that time, Goff had fallen out of favor with his new head coach, Sean McVay,
01:54had already quarterbacked in a Super Bowl.
01:56Matt Stafford was on his way to a potential Hall of Fame.
01:58He has cemented his legacy as a guy that's going to be in Canton at some point.
02:03I don't remember one since then that was quite this good.
02:07Miles Garrett, the best defensive player in all of football,
02:11one of the highest paid defenders of all time, for Jared Verse,
02:15who nationally might be a little bit slept on, especially after this past season,
02:19where he just had seven and a half sacks as a sophomore.
02:21But he was the defensive rookie of the year two seasons ago,
02:24was a pro bowler who got some all-pro consideration,
02:28like a really, really good player.
02:30And in two years, it's only 12 sacks,
02:32but I don't think that tells the story for the 25-year-old
02:34who was drafted out of Florida State.
02:36He's outstanding.
02:37If you watch them, it's hard to say that it's one of those things
02:40where if you're just looking at the stats, to your point, you go,
02:42why is everyone drooling over this guy?
02:44Seven and a half sacks last year?
02:46What's special?
02:46You watch those games, and he is in everybody's face all the time.
02:50He's always there.
02:52He's egregiously athletic.
02:52Yes.
02:53He's really good.
02:54Length, and he gets under you,
02:56and he kind of does that long game around the edge
02:58where he just kind of grabs your chest plate,
03:00and you move wherever he wants you to
03:02as he's reading and deciphering and then throwing you to the side.
03:05He is impactful.
03:06I think he is just kind of a snake lying in the weeds
03:10of what he is eventually going to be.
03:12He is absolutely on the verge of striking,
03:15if I can keep my snake analogy going.
03:18If you told me this year he had 14 sacks, I'd say,
03:21yeah, I believe that.
03:22I bet that.
03:22He is that kind of talent.
03:23So as crazy as it sounds,
03:25this is obviously an unbelievable trade for the Rams.
03:28You get, in his prime, still at a level where he could go out
03:33and get you 20-plus sacks, Miles Garrett to come in
03:36and make a Super Bowl favorite better.
03:39That's the goal.
03:40You're trying to win the title, as you said.
03:42The window's open.
03:43Let's make sure we finish this thing.
03:45The Rams are getting antsy.
03:46They won the title ahead of schedule maybe in 2021.
03:49Since then, 5-12 with a bunch of injuries.
03:51McVay has acknowledged he almost retired
03:53and went into television.
03:54It was that trying a season for him.
03:57But after deciding, I'm not going to be a baby and quit,
04:0010 wins, 10 wins, 12 wins.
04:01The last three years, they've been to one conference championship.
04:04Not good enough.
04:05That's not what McVay thinks they're capable of.
04:08That's not what Snead or ownership, Kroenke, thinks they should be doing.
04:11So they're not going to keep knocking on the door.
04:14They're going to try to kick the damn thing down.
04:16And that's what this trade was.
04:17You obviously love Miles Garrett to the Rams.
04:19But I think for the Browns, this is exactly what they should be doing.
04:22For Andrew Barry and that front office for their new head coach there,
04:26I think this is a really, really good trade for the Browns.
04:30I do, too.
04:31And I know it's not going to go over very well.
04:33It won't be popular.
04:34I think probably locally there in Cleveland or, you know,
04:36the talking heads will start screaming,
04:38how do you give up a whole affair when it's prime?
04:40We're just signed a deal there.
04:41What's the goal?
04:42At the end of the day, would you rather have a great player on a terrible team?
04:45I've seen what that looks like.
04:46It looks like the 2025 Cleveland Browns where they won four games.
04:50And Garrett still had that many sacks, by the way,
04:53from a team that's trailing every game all the time
04:56where teams are running up the clock against you,
04:58borderline handing it off, running dive plays,
05:01and then taking a knee for three quarters of a game because you're terrible,
05:04and he still had that many sacks.
05:05That's actually a really good point.
05:07Record-breaking season, 23 sacks when they were awful.
05:10What might he have been capable of this past season,
05:13as dominant as he was, if that team was in front all the time?
05:15Which is something the Rams are thinking about and salivating about.
05:19Precisely.
05:19If I'm in the lead, he is pinning his ears back.
05:23The other team's throwing it on every down in the fourth quarter
05:26because they're down 13 points.
05:28Now what can Miles Garrett do?
05:29He had five sacks and a 20-point loss to New England.
05:32He had a sack and a half against a 30-point loss to the Bears.
05:35He's superhuman.
05:36I mean, he's an X-Men character,
05:38and we're just sort of slowly going to find out about it later.
05:41After his career's over, he reveals, like,
05:42yep, I have a superpower.
05:43Ta-da.
05:44He's amazing.
05:45He was the best player in the league this year.
05:47I think that's fair.
05:47And I'm saying positionless.
05:49It's not, oh, he was the DPOY.
05:50Like, in a year where Patrick Mahomes was just kind of normal,
05:54there were some great performances.
05:56Stafford was incredible.
05:57If there was someone better, it's his quarterback on the Rams
06:00who won the MVP, Matthew Stafford.
06:02Some guys had great seasons.
06:04MVP runner-up Drake May was very good.
06:06There were other players.
06:07Maybe that you could say, you look at the numbers,
06:11Jackson Smith and Jigba comes to mind, OPOY,
06:13and you go, might have been the best player in the league this year.
06:16I think Miles Garrett would probably get my vote
06:18because he did something so historic and so amazing.
06:21And there's no reason to believe he's about to fall off.
06:23He's only 30 years old.
06:24So he's got a few more of these years in him.
06:26So going and getting him, what you might be able to get out of him,
06:30leading games, getting him to basically pass rush
06:33in ideal situations more often,
06:35he might be able to flirt with 23, 24 sacks again.
06:38It's probably going to be 16.5 to 18.
06:40Oh, by the way, that's great on a good defense too.
06:43Yeah, with some TFLs in there because it's not just he's not third down,
06:46he's not doing a Dwight Freeney act toward the end of his time in Indianapolis
06:49and just getting upfield.
06:50He's a complete football player who's excellent.
06:52But for Cleveland's perspective, I'm curious to see what the extra stuff is.
06:56We know verse in a one, and then we've kind of heard it's something else
07:00unless you've seen an update as to what the actual package is,
07:02but I'm very curious about that ultimately.
07:04But for the Rams, it reminds me, speaking of the Colts,
07:09kind of of those sorts of teams, right, where you've got an unbelievable offense,
07:13a great, great offense with an offensive architect,
07:16a Hall of Fame quarterback, Super Bowl winning quarterback,
07:19a guy that knows everything.
07:20You've got a couple great receivers on the outside,
07:22Puka and Adams, 1 and 1A.
07:23Pretty good, solid running game, good offensive line,
07:26and you're designed to do two things.
07:28Get a lead and then create chaos with it.
07:31I dare you to run the football against the Rams early.
07:34Please, be my guest.
07:35You'll get down, then you'll have to throw, and we feast.
07:38And that's the deal.
07:39They gave Seattle, the best team in the NFL last year,
07:42a run for their money multiple times as divisional rivals.
07:45That NFC title game was incredible.
07:48You remember it was only a, I think it was a three-point game,
07:50maybe a four-point game at the end of the day.
07:51They were right there eye-to-eye with the Seahawks,
07:54and they said, we are not going to just go as status quo
07:56and see if we can do it again.
07:58We are going all in to defeat them.
08:00This, to me, is the how do we beat the Seahawks play.
08:03I think that's the move.
08:04The Rams were right around 11-1 when I last looked for Super Bowl odds.
08:08Which was basically, even with their division favorites,
08:11the Seattle Seahawks,
08:12they're battling with the defending champions from the NFC West.
08:15But it was right behind or even with, depending on where you're looking,
08:18the Buffalo Bills, led by perennial MVP candidate Josh Allen,
08:21and the Ravens, who I think people are expecting a big bounce back from.
08:25Huge year for Lamar Jackson loading.
08:27They, as of right now on FanDuel, I just looked this up,
08:30are plus 550 to win the Super Bowl.
08:32Yeah, there you go.
08:33They are decidedly the favorite.
08:37Everyone else is 10-1 or worse.
08:38Ravens, Bills, Seahawks.
08:40They've left them in their dust.
08:41Now, this is a reactionary moving of the odds.
08:44The line has changed considerably with this news because, what do you know,
08:48everyone's going to jump on all the books and go bet the Rams today,
08:51so you're going to get terrible value.
08:52By the time training camp rolls around,
08:54it's going to be a little closer, I would imagine, to 10-1.
08:57So, right now is not the time for the record to go put your Rams ticket in.
09:01I'll just tell you that in advance.
09:03But, a team that was, even with the best of the league,
09:07in terms of likeliness to win the Super Bowl today,
09:10I'm not even talking odds, I'm just saying in reality,
09:12took a big leap forward to being the overall favorite.
09:16Understandably so.
09:17But, I go back to the Browns because I think it is fascinating.
09:20You were out a couple weeks ago, and I had an audio vault I did
09:24where the new head coach there, Todd Munkin,
09:26who comes over from Baltimore as the OC,
09:29was asked about Miles Garrett at one of their little gatherings, OTAs,
09:33whatever it was, and Garrett wasn't there.
09:36And then someone followed up.
09:37It was kind of an awkward exchange where they go,
09:39have you met him yet?
09:41And he goes, met who?
09:42And they're like, Miles.
09:43He's like, no.
09:45And he just wanted to move on.
09:46And someone followed up to that, and he's like,
09:48what's the next question?
09:49I remember talking about that on the audio vault,
09:52and I didn't think they were going to trade him,
09:54but it was really, really weird.
09:55Because remember, last year was when he put out that press release
09:58where he said he wanted to be traded out of Cleveland.
10:01Then he became the highest paid defensive player ever,
10:03and all of a sudden, winning wasn't as important.
10:05He didn't need to go get his Super Bowl,
10:07and demanding a trade had kind of gone away.
10:11But you've got this new head coach.
10:13The team is showing up for all these activities.
10:15And forget that he wasn't there at that moment.
10:17Laramie Tunsil doesn't always show up at things.
10:19He's going to be great, and it's not a big problem.
10:21Miles Garrett maybe doesn't need to be at OTAs either.
10:24He's the best defensive player in the league.
10:25It'll be okay.
10:26But to not have talked to the coach, there was no phone call.
10:30There was no discussion.
10:30He had not met him yet.
10:32I know that it, just based on watching that press conference,
10:35it set off some alarm bells in Cleveland that that was weird.
10:38You fast forward about 10, 12 days, whatever it was,
10:41and now he's traded to the Rams.
10:42So something this offseason popped back up with him where he must have gone
10:47to the front office and said, I know you paid me, and I appreciate that.
10:50This is not working for me.
10:53You have to wonder what led up to it, because it went from...
10:56All the losing, I think.
10:57Well, sure.
10:58But, you know, you walked into a...
11:00I don't have a good analogy, but you walked into a room with a bunch of lions
11:03with a stake around your neck, and they tried to bite you.
11:05You know what I mean?
11:06Like, you signed in Cleveland.
11:07So I don't know that it was specifically a Garrett disgruntled thing
11:11as much as it was a...
11:12Here's how I read it.
11:13Yeah.
11:14He wanted to be paid.
11:15He threatened that he wanted to be traded.
11:17Right.
11:18They pay him.
11:18All right, I got what I wanted.
11:20Well, now somebody else can inherit this contract.
11:22Oh, I see.
11:22I got to play a football season on this new contract because they're paying me.
11:26But as soon as I get back to the offseason,
11:28maybe this was the master plan all along.
11:30I'll get paid.
11:31Check.
11:31Going full basketball on it.
11:33Exactly.
11:33You're doing an NBA bit, yeah.
11:34And now I'll kind of call my shot and go play somewhere else and do my thing.
11:37And by the way, guess what he got to do?
11:39He got to join the Avengers.
11:41Yeah.
11:41He gets to go play with...
11:42It's not like the Cowboys acquired him or the Packers or one of these teams,
11:47a la when they went out and got Micah Parsons and a good team got better.
11:50He joined arguably already the best team in the NFL.
11:53Yeah, one of the preseason Super Bowl favorites before he got there.
11:56And now, of course, they're prohibitive.
11:58But if you are Munkin and you hadn't met this guy and he's disgruntled
12:02and you're trying to lay the foundation with Barry and start this thing from the ground up,
12:06we talk about a C.J. Abrams trade with the Nationals as making sense going into the season
12:13because his timeline of hitting free agency and the team's timeline of winning do not match.
12:20Well, right now, they're a game out of the wildcard after another series win this weekend
12:24against the Padres, and they're 2 over .500.
12:27And so as long as you're hanging around the wildcard conversation,
12:31discussing a trade of C.J. Abrams becomes less relevant and probably not worthwhile
12:35because the timeline looks better right now.
12:38But if I could make the same case for Garrett and the Browns,
12:44Danny, the Browns are not at risk of winning anytime soon.
12:47In that division with the Ravens, who I just told you are the favorites with the Bills
12:52to come out of the AFC.
12:53Yeah, they're reloading.
12:53The Bengals should be pretty good.
12:55I think the Bengals are a playoff team.
12:56That's my, like, if that team wins 13 games, I won't be surprised.
12:59Like, big sleeper team in the league right now.
13:02And then the Steelers are just kind of spinning their tires with Aaron Rodgers.
13:06I don't anticipate them having a great year.
13:08But they're certainly better than the Browns.
13:09The Browns have won eight games the last two years.
13:11They don't have a quarterback.
13:13Sounds like Deshaun Watson is going to start for them.
13:15I mean, they are going to stink out loud.
13:17There's a good chance they have the number one pick here in D.C.
13:19in the draft that's going to be held on the mall in 2027.
13:23So why wouldn't you dangle Miles Garrett?
13:25And if you can get Jared Verse on a rookie contract, cheaper, five years younger,
13:29really good player at that position, and a one back?
13:32And I know the one's not going to be great.
13:34Probably going to be in the mid-20s to, you know, 30s.
13:37So what?
13:38I, this will not be the popular take today.
13:41But everyone will talk about the Rams getting better, and that's obvious.
13:44I think this was a great trade for the Browns.
13:46I think it's good for everybody.
13:47And we always have to do a winner or loser.
13:49You know, that's sort of the prerequisite if you'd like to yell about sports for a living.
13:54You know, this is a travesty, or this is a shame, or this is a...
13:57This makes sense for everyone involved.
13:58Again, we dealt this here internally when you had Juan Soto on a last-place team.
14:03Juan Soto special, last-place team.
14:05This is the football Soto deal.
14:06Yeah, seriously.
14:07Juan Soto special, last-place team.
14:09Cleveland is...
14:09Miles Garrett special, a team that can't get out of its own way.
14:12Whereas the Rams, that's...
14:14This is what you do when you're there, and you act accordingly.
14:18This is what the Browns should be doing when they're where they are,
14:20which is the bottom of a tough division, and really the bottom of the NFL.
14:24They are the dregs.
14:25This is how you climb out of that.
14:26I know it's not much fun, and fans don't get to see Miles Garrett play
14:29in a Browns uniform, but what's the goal here?
14:32The goal is to try to build you something special, and it's not happening.
14:35We have a good sample with Miles Garrett as our best player,
14:37and whatever the hell we're trotting out there on offense.
14:39What TV show won the Emmy for best television show this year?
14:44Best drama, let's say.
14:45Oh, I don't know.
14:46Let me find out.
14:46I'll find out.
14:47Well...
14:48Because you're doing the NFL a bit.
14:49Here's what I'm doing.
14:50Yeah.
14:51They better be lucky the NFL's not available to win awards at the Emmy.
14:55There is no better TV show than the National Football League.
15:00There is nothing more entertaining than football,
15:03and while the offseason does not normally flash,
15:07with the strobe light effect of today,
15:10what an incredible blockbuster this is.
15:13It never stops this league.
15:15This was one of the few down periods,
15:18and in two days we're likely to get a Miles Garrett trade
15:21and an A.J. Brown trade on back-to-back days.
15:24Before the Garrett deal came out of nowhere,
15:26nobody had this.
15:28Nobody saw this coming.
15:29Nobody was talking about this.
15:32Schefter said three hours ago
15:33that the A.J. Brown deal is likely to happen tonight or tomorrow.
15:37So we might get the best defensive player in the league traded today
15:41and a top three to five wide receiver traded tomorrow.
15:46Football, man.
15:47Yeah.
15:48Best TV show going.
15:49Give it its Emmy.
15:50Miles Garrett trade with a possible A.J. Brown dessert.
15:53Greater than symbol The Pit,
15:55which is apparently what won Best Drama last year.
15:57The Pit, which is HBO Max.
15:59Never seen it.
16:00Everyone talks good things.
16:01That's the one that's like ER2.
16:03Yeah.
16:04Medical drama, Noah Wiley.
16:05It's Noah Wiley as a doctor again,
16:07and they're trying to get my mom to watch a medical drama
16:10like she did in the 90s.
16:11Yeah.
16:11And it worked, by the way, because she was all in.
16:13All in.
16:13So I want you to imagine a loan
16:15where you just have to pay back the exact amount of the loan.
16:18It's the same as my level here.
16:21That's zero interest.
16:22That's a no-interest loan, no-interest inning.
16:24If I can say that, you went a long way for that.
16:25I know.
16:26It was a circumlocutious route to get to the fact
16:28that I don't do medical dramas ever.
16:29But this one's good.
16:30I don't care.
16:31Why is it that medical dramas are the number one plot for TV shows?
16:38Here's my answer.
16:39It has to be.
16:39I mean, occasionally the cop shows are up there, too,
16:41but it's always medical dramas.
16:43It's like the good doctor and then the bad doctor
16:46and the happy doctor, but the sad doctor.
16:48The ornery doctor with a heart of gold.
16:50Yeah.
16:50House, but then also shack, but also, you know.
16:54House from D.C.
16:55Single family home.
16:56There's always a new doctor.
16:58Yep.
16:58And I hate them all.
16:59Now, it's because there's built-in drama.
17:01You know what I mean?
17:02Like, all you have to do is, like, there's co-exit on 96.
17:05They're bringing in a bunch of patients now.
17:07Right away, you've got heightened drama like someone might die.
17:10So, inevitably, right away, you've got, like, a built-in stakes
17:14for any kind of show where the emotions are heightened.
17:16And it's cheap and stupid.
17:17I'm out.
17:18I wish every team was ran like the Rams are, though.
17:22I wish every single team was constantly all in, constantly thinking about the best outcome Sunday
17:30and this season and trying to win now.
17:32This is the anti-Major League Baseball issue, right, where we might have a lockout
17:37because there's a lot of owners that are like, eh, let's kick the can down the road a while.
17:40Not the Rams, dude.
17:42They just don't care about draft picks.
17:44They don't care about three years from now.
17:46They're going to figure it out later.
17:47But they do this every year, and if you look at it, it's like seven, eight years
17:52of not having to worry about it.
17:53Yeah, for a team that's never thought about their future, they've had a long open window.
17:57That's pretty amazing.
17:58It does make their drafting of Ty Simpson in the first round dumber.
18:03Yeah.
18:04Like, I didn't get that pick when they made it, but that was one of the few times ever
18:07where it's like, wow, you kept a pick and you took a guy, and you planned for life
18:11after Matthew Stafford.
18:12Now, if it turns out that Stafford gets hurt and Simpson's actually ready and they plug him in
18:16and he plays at a decent level, they don't trade for some veteran or something, and Simpson
18:21just leads them into the playoffs, pulls a Brock Purdy or something, all right, now Les
18:24Snead's a genius, and Sean McVay shouldn't have been in a bad mood that time.
18:27But if you're thinking about trading for Miles Garrett, if you're in a mode where you're
18:32pushing all the chips in again this offseason, why in the hell did you draft potentially a
18:37project quarterback at number 13 overall or whatever it was?
18:39It's the ultimate bit of hubris, because there's no way you could look at that roster,
18:43any roster, even as good as they are, and go, we're all set.
18:46We don't need anything else.
18:47You know what I mean?
18:48We're going to put a fresh spoiler on the back of my car.
18:54It's such a luxury pick at that point.
18:56When you have a win-now mode, that is quite literally a stash for the future.
19:00That's one of those find the GM is thinking years down the line, and that's adorable.
19:03That's cute.
19:04But I thought that was irresponsible.
19:05I still do.
19:06Could have been Makai Lemon or some weapon.
19:08I guarantee you someone could have helped them this year in that draft.
19:11Their favorite pass rusher in the country to help replace, well, I guess he just got one
19:16in Myles Garrett.
19:17He's a good replacement.
19:18Add to Myles Garrett as you beef up that defensive line, which already gets to the quarterback
19:23a ton.
19:24Pretty amazing trade out of the NFL.
19:26If you want to react to it, we'll open up the phones.
