00:01So, the package we got, it's a little strange.
00:05Oh! Corneria Cake!
00:08Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 20 times when Star Fox barrel-rolled
00:15its way into other video games.
00:25Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long.
00:28So, be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays, and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:34Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Wii U Edition.
00:41Don't let me down.
00:42Though it would launch first on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 featured
00:48a special version on the ill-fated Wii U. In this version, you could unlock a small handful
00:54of costumes based on various Nintendo characters.
00:57Along with the Mushroom Kingdom's usual suspects, you could dress up some of Tekken's badass
01:01brawlers as Fox McCloud.
01:04Honestly, Steve and Hoareng fit Fox's persona quite a bit in personality and moveset.
01:14Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
01:25Superstar Saga features four different bean types for you to collect during your journey
01:30across the Bean Bean Kingdom.
01:32Collecting a certain number of different beans will allow you to create drinks at the Star
01:36Bean Cafe, and you get a special reward for making each drink.
01:40Once you've brewed a drink for the first time, Professor E. Gadd will give Mario and Luigi
01:45a special accessory that grants unique buffs.
01:48Each accessory you acquire is actually an item from other Nintendo games, and among these is the golden
01:56bonus ring seen throughout various Star Fox games.
02:03With this, you can get additional XP from fights if you manage to win without taking damage.
02:09There were plans to have Fox and his cohorts make an appearance, but those were scrapped.
02:14Starlink Battle for Atlas
02:22This may be one of the most bizarre and alluring crossovers in Star Fox history.
02:28Likely as a means to sell more units, Ubisoft collaborated with Nintendo to bring Fox McCloud
02:33and company to their newest original title.
02:36The Switch version of Starlink featured an exclusive portion of the campaign where the main cast
02:42helped the Star Fox team track down Wolf O'Donnell.
02:46Switch owners even got exclusive figures of Fox and the Artwing to play with in the game.
02:51Alas, this crossover was not enough to push units out the door, and it wasn't long before retailers
02:57were marking them down for absurdly low prices.
03:01Gotta get rid of that stock, man.
03:07I wouldn't eat that if I were you.
03:10Family Guy – The Quest for Stuff
03:12This one may not be tied to Star Fox specifically, but Fox's impact on competitive Smash Brothers
03:19makes this worth mentioning.
03:21Family Guy – The Quest for Stuff tasks players to rebuild Quahog, and in one of the game's
03:26limited time events, you could obtain characters from the movie The Princess Bride.
03:30In one of the quests involving Fezzik, the giant asks Sir Peter,
03:35what do you do if you get into a melee?
03:37To which Sir Peter responds, quote,
03:39I pick Fox, turn off items, and select final destination.
03:43Sorry, I only know the word melee from Super Smash Brothers.
03:46This is, of course, referencing the constant hardcore,
03:49melee fans that only find fun with this particular ruleset.
03:54At least our boy Fox got a random shoutout.
03:56Mario Kart 8
04:01Some time after the launch of Amiibo, Nintendo rolled out a sizable update for Mario Kart 8,
04:07where the Amiibos made for Super Smash Brothers would unlock special costumes when used in their
04:12flagship kart racer.
04:13Not only could you unlock Mii outfits based on Mario and the gang,
04:17but also other Nintendo franchises as well.
04:20Using the Fox Amiibo would allow you to dress your Mii up as our favorite pilot,
04:24complete with jacket, metal boots, and headgear.
04:28Unfortunately, even though Falco and Wolf got Amiibos later on,
04:32Nintendo never updated the game to include costumes based on them.
04:39Super Mario Maker
04:49Continuing the Amiibo train,
04:51Super Mario Maker approached integration with the plastic toys in a similar manner as Mario Kart 8.
04:57By scanning any of the Super Smash Brothers Amiibos,
05:00you could transform Mario into a wealth of different characters.
05:03Of course, scanning the Fox or Falco Amiibo would unlock costumes for them,
05:09but beating the 100 Mario challenge had additional rewards for Star Fox fans.
05:14Conquering this challenge would unlock costumes of Peppy and Slippy,
05:19and yes, each of the four team members would speak in their classic Lylat language,
05:23just as they did in the original Star Fox game.
05:26Bonus detail, beating a mission with any of the costumes would play the Mission Complete tune from the SNES Classic.
05:37Oh, and lest we forget that you can unlock a costume that turns Mario into an Arwing.
05:43The Henry Stickmin Collection
05:53The Henry Stickmin games are packed with all kinds of references to video games,
05:58many of them referencing the same games that you see on the internet again, and again, and again.
06:04Star Fox is, unsurprisingly, one of those frequently mentioned games.
06:08In the Completing the Mission episode, the Jewel Baron route starts off with Henry flying towards a satellite.
06:15When the satellite starts firing at him, you are given three options on how to avoid death.
06:20One of these options is to perform the famous barrel roll technique that Fox uses to deflect enemy fire.
06:33Alas, this logic does not work out in Henry's favor.
06:36Bayonetta 2
06:44Much like Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Bayonetta 2 featured some costumes that made every Nintendo fan gush with excitement.
06:52This sequel to the 2009 hack and slash gem took advantage of having Nintendo as its publisher,
06:57and gave players the ability to dress up Bayonetta in different outfits based on Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Link, Samus,
07:05and Fox McCloud.
07:07When equipped with the Star Mercenary outfit, all four of Bayonetta's guns turn into Arwings with a keychain of each
07:14Star Fox member attached.
07:16You even get to pilot the Arwing itself during the on-rails flight segment in Chapter 16.
07:22And if you equip this outfit onto Gene, your pistol's sound effects will go from sounding like Star Fox 64
07:28to the SNES Star Fox.
07:35F-Zero X and F-Zero GX
07:51We all know who James McCloud is.
07:54Fox's dad, former leader of Star Fox, before dying to Andross, and lazy face swap of Fox but with sunglasses.
08:01Well, that's who we thought he was, but he may be living a double life as he's made appearances in
08:07the F-Zero games.
08:08Here, James McCloud is the leader of Galaxy Dogs, and pilots not an Arwing, but a machine named Little Wyvern.
08:17So, did James really die at the hands of Andross?
08:21Or did he figure out some way to travel to another dimension, become human, abandon his family, and establish a
08:27second life for himself?
08:28It's all a conspiracy, man!
08:30What is that insignia on your back?
08:34The Galaxy Dog logo. I designed it.
08:37The Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask.
08:48If you're super into Zelda and Nintendo in general, you likely already know about this one.
08:54But for those of you who didn't see it for the first time, there is a super subtle reference to
08:59Star Fox within Majora's Mask.
09:01Because of the way they're assembled, people believe that the Keaton Mask, the Bremen Mask, the Bunny Hood, and Dongaro's
09:08Mask are supposed to represent Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy, respectively.
09:12Might be a bit of a stretch, but the Mask of Scents? That is absolutely none other than that Rat
09:19Pygma Dengar.
09:26Animal Crossing series.
09:37Those familiar with the older Animal Crossing games will recall that the games used to feature a wealth of different
09:43items to collect based on various Nintendo franchises.
09:46The original Animal Crossing, Wild World, City Folk, and New Leaf each feature the iconic Arwing as a piece of
09:54collectible furniture.
09:55While the Arwing is interactive, three of the four games make the Arwing play a different song from the original
10:01Star Fox.
10:02Wild World has it play an excerpt of Corneria, while City Folk has it play the training music.
10:08Meanwhile, New Leaf simply has the Arwing play the main theme.
10:19Mario Golf
10:32As you're playing on the greens and raging over the BS ball physics of Mario Golf, you'll see a plethora
10:38of names shuffle about on the scoreboard after every course.
10:42Many enemies and allies from Mario history are also participating in the King's game, but a certain someone from Star
10:50Fox is slacking off.
10:52You may spot Slippy Toad's name on the scoreboard from time to time.
10:57He doesn't show up super often, but still often enough to make us wonder why he isn't on the Great
11:04Fox doing his usual repairs.
11:08Fox, get your kid on a leash!
11:20Super Mario RPG
11:22Legend of the Seven Stars
11:33This is the last Mario game of the list.
11:37And this was actually the first time Star Fox had any kind of appearance in the Mushroom Kingdom.
11:42When exploring Beryl Volcano, you can find a special shop called Hino Mart, where you can get items, gear, and
11:49the like.
11:49Behind the counters, you can spot a set of figurines perched atop a stack of boxes.
11:54Two of these are the Blue Falcon and Fire Stingray, piloted by Captain Falcon and Samurai Goro respectively in the
12:01F-Zero games.
12:02And to the left of them, the legendary Arwing from Star Fox.
12:09Pokemon Stadium 2
12:11Pokemon Stadium 2 features a neat cozy corner you can decorate called My Room.
12:25Here, you can arrange and furnish your room with different Pokemon plushies, furniture, decorations, and more.
12:32Among the items you can acquire are different Nintendo consoles, namely the NES, SNES, Virtual Boy, and the Nintendo 64.
12:40Setting these consoles up will make the TV display one of several different Nintendo games.
12:45Should you place the N64 in your room, there's a good chance that the next time you visit, you'll get
12:51a glimpse of Star Fox 64 on your virtual room's television.
12:59Stunt Race FX
13:01Just like the original Star Fox, Stunt Race FX utilizes the Super FX chip to allow the SNES to render
13:16polygonal 3D visuals.
13:17The racing game was even developed by the same minds behind Star Fox, Argonaut Software.
13:23As tribute to the revolutionary on-rail shooter, Argonaut Software threw Fox into Stunt Race FX, though it's one of
13:31those blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments.
13:33Chances are you will pass by a billboard during one of your races, and these billboards typically show a picture
13:39of Mario, Kirby, or Fox McCloud.
13:43The Night Owl course specifically hides a special Star Fox Easter egg.
13:53Knock down all four signs of the Star Fox logo, and an Arwing will fly by to deliver a handy
13:59power-up.
14:00Steel Diver Sub Wars
14:11For the most part, Steel Diver has been largely forgotten by the gaming community, even by hardcore Nintendo fans.
14:18Its sequel, the free-to-play Steel Diver Sub Wars, is even more obscure.
14:23These two games had players battling each other using a wide arsenal of submarines.
14:29In a post-launch update for Sub Wars, players could even purchase and use the Blue Marine.
14:35This submarine was only ever used once in the entirety of Star Fox's story, having been deployed when Fox ventured
14:42deep into the waters of Aquas in Star Fox 64.
14:45But the love for the franchise didn't end there, as you could also unlock Peppy Hare as your crew member,
14:52which few seemed to manage to unlock him before the game's servers were shut down in 2023.
15:05Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy Plus
15:18Despite the shared name with Ace Combat Assault Horizon,
15:22Ace Combat Legacy is instead a remake of Ace Combat 2, developed specifically for the Nintendo 3DS.
15:29The re-released Plus version of the game featured some exclusive decals based on Nintendo properties to slap onto your
15:36planes and jets.
15:37If you want to use the ADF-01 Falcon, you can decorate it with a slick decal based on Star
15:43Fox.
15:44The decal even uses the 64-3D render of Fox to take up the back end of the Falcon.
15:54Asterix and Obelix XXL-2 Mission Las Vegas
15:59Hold this please, traitor.
16:01Yeah!
16:01Hey!
16:03Let's go, Obelix!
16:06Unexpectedly, the Asterix and Obelix games pay a ton of tributes to the biggest franchises in video game history, Nintendo
16:13games included.
16:14We would anticipate a nod to Mario or even Link here and there, but Star Fox?
16:20And it isn't the overplayed barrel roll joke?
16:23No, XXL-2 puts the spotlight on everybody's favorite Toad to hate.
16:28You wanted evidence?
16:29I've got evidence!
16:31While exploring the Arc de Triomphe, look above to see a giant frog head sporting a red cap.
16:37If the sign is any indication, Slippus may very well be a distant relative of Slippy Toad.
16:44Donkey Konga 3
16:53Didn't remember this game ever coming out?
16:56Well, that's because this sequel was only ever released in Japan.
16:59It's a shame that this game was region locked, as it does feature a track that most Star Fox fans
17:05could appreciate.
17:06Donkey Konga 3 allows you to play the bongos and clap to the beat of a variety of tracks.
17:11One of those tracks being the main theme to Star Fox Assault.
17:25Odd to include a space opera-esque bit of music into a game that's deep into more percussion-focused tracks.
17:33But this isn't even the weirdest use of Star Fox we've ever seen.
17:49Before we continue, check out this single from Sound Mojo's album, Balance.
17:53Classical music reimagined as rock, hard rock, and metal.
17:57Check out the full track and album below.
17:59Fortune calls, rise and ruin, night and noon, all are prisoners of the name.
18:13Smooth Moves
18:23The WarioWare series is no stranger to incorporating various Nintendo games into its massive micro-game collections.
18:30I mean, that's what 9V and 18V are there for.
18:35They're the uber-nerds of the franchise.
18:37But in Smooth Moves, their micro-game collection contains a longer micro-game that is just a reconstructed version of
18:44Star Fox.
18:45Fly through a brief sequence of enemies before facing off against the robotic operating buddy, equipped with an NES zapper.
18:53Honestly, we could go for a nonsensical iteration of Star Fox that pays tribute to various Nintendo products,
18:59but this is probably the closest we're ever gonna get.
19:08Have you spotted any of these cameos and references for yourself?
