00:38The first Mario Kart is still a joy to play on occasion, but the obscene difficulty has made it age
00:44horribly.
00:45Don't get us wrong, this is still fun to play with a second player.
00:50Unfortunately, the same cannot be said when playing solo on 150cc or even 100cc.
01:01The AI cheats in some of the most unsubtle ways imaginable, and it isn't just the rubber banding or the
01:09AI getting exclusive access to certain items.
01:11There could be two groups of item boxes on the course, yet your fellow competitors will somehow throw out five
01:18items in a single lap.
01:20Look, there's a difference between being a difficult game and being shamelessly obviously unfair to the player.
01:27Make it make sense.
01:36Kurukurukururin
01:44Don't let the box art and premise fool you.
01:47Sure, a game about a spinning stick sounds like it'd be basic, unexciting, and beaten in a matter of minutes.
01:53On the contrary, Kurukurukururin is among the hardest games ever made for the Game Boy Advance.
02:07The Hellerin, you know, the spinning stick, never stops spinning, and you have to navigate it between very narrow passages.
02:14One touch of anything, and you take damage.
02:17Of course, the game does a good job of easing you into it, but trust us, this game will test
02:22your patience and make you question your skill level.
02:31Fire Emblem, Shadow Dragon, and the Blade of Light.
02:44In this day and age, many of us are used to tactical RPG games like Fire Emblem offering retries, making
02:51permadeath an optional setting,
02:53and even offering a chance to redo turns.
02:56But the first Fire Emblem game does not have such safeguards.
03:04You have your army, and you must make sure that each unit survives while being mindful of the kinds of
03:10moves you're making.
03:11Should Marth fall, your game ends.
03:14Should any other unit fall, they're gone for the rest of the game.
03:18There's no going back.
03:19So, Fire Emblem demands that you know what you're doing at all times, which might be asking a bit too
03:26much from today's players.
03:34Diddy Kong Racing!
03:45We can somewhat forgive Super Mario Kart for making questionable decisions and maintaining its challenge.
03:51Diddy Kong Racing, on the other hand, is deliberately designed to be frustrating.
03:56It isn't the races themselves that are hard, but the silver coin races,
04:00many of which have their coins placed in very precarious spots that could cost you an entire race.
04:13It is highly important that you understand every bit of DKR's mechanics if you want to 100% it.
04:20Otherwise, you may just quit after the first race against WizPig.
04:31Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!
04:40Punch-Out! has long been known to be one of the most difficult games ever made for the NES,
04:44but that's only what a lot of mainstream media wants you to think, because, you know, Mike Tyson was in
04:50it.
04:50Yes, it is a very hard game, as the entire game revolves around recognizing your opponent's telegraphs and reacting accordingly.
05:06However, this leads to a lot of trial and error, as every foe gets faster and more subtle in their
05:12telegraphs.
05:13But to call this the hardest NES game, there are way more brutal titles we have yet to get to.
05:26Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels.
05:38Welcome to the real Super Mario Bros. 2, in case you didn't know already.
05:42Prepare to get your teeth kicked in!
05:45Of any of the mainline Mario games, this one will forever be considered the hardest,
05:49on account of some of the nonsense employed across every level.
05:59In addition to poisonous mushrooms being a pickup, there are levels where you have to launch high into the air,
06:05levels where only specific pathways get you to the goal,
06:09and even levels where certain pipes can send you back to earlier levels.
06:14You know, maybe Nintendo was right to not release this to Western audiences in the first place.
06:26Donkey Kong Country 2. Diddy's Kong Quest.
06:37The Donkey Kong Country games have long been known to be some of the most challenging games in Nintendo's catalog.
06:44Even the newer ones are rage-inducing.
06:46Have you played Tropical Freeze? Have you played Returns?
06:50But DKC2 is the most infamous of the older generations, for a variety of reasons.
07:04So many levels put enemies in dangerous positions that can potentially cause you to lose a life in a matter
07:10of seconds.
07:11And God help you, if you want to try and complete the game,
07:14because DKC2 will make hunting for those bonuses in Kong letters a real chore.
07:25Ice Climber
07:26Ice Climber never gets the recognition for its difficulty, probably because, well, no one has played it except for die
07:41-hard Nintendo fans.
07:42Ascend 32 different mountains, composed of moving clouds, falling icicles, and annoying-as-hell topies that keep rebuilding floors that
07:51you're trying to break through.
07:59You thankfully don't have to worry about a time limit in this game, but the enemy placement and the overall
08:04level design can make things very frustrating.
08:07It won't be long before the catchy music becomes an earworm of nightmares reminding you of all the mental pain
08:12you've endured.
08:13Trust me, I have beaten this game before. It is not easy. It's very infuriating.
08:26Doctor Mario
08:35If you can't play Tetris to save your life, you won't have any sliver of hope playing Doctor Mario.
08:40Yes, it is similar to Tetris, only you have to match five of the same color to clear up space
08:47in the bottle.
08:55Regardless of the adjustable difficulty, this game gets stressful quickly.
09:00Before you know it, every level is starting with an almost completely filled bottle of viruses placed in awkward spots,
09:07and the drop speed will become barely comprehensible.
09:10You need some serious skills in adapting and managing priorities if you want to get to level 20.
09:19And lastly, Kid Icarus.
09:22Kid Icarus.
09:29Yeah, of all the classic Nintendo games, Kid Icarus is undoubtedly the hardest game of the entire bunch.
09:36The verticality and level design mixed with the labyrinthian layout can make it tough to remember where you're at in
09:41relation to everything else.
09:51On top of that, there are plenty of enemies that can insta-kill you at a moment's notice.
09:56Yes, there are items you can buy to beef pit up and make navigation easier,
10:02but those items tend to be really expensive and require extensive amounts of grinding.
10:07In other words, Kid Icarus is a game that will test your patience and more.
