00:00Talk to me about Ellis. We know he's a plastic surgeon. He's got a very specific way that he
00:04talks and how he's groomed that gives a plastic surgeon to me for some reason. I can't quite
00:09place it. I'm curious, was there a certain person that you took inspiration from or how you built
00:15his whole vibe? No, I had so little time for this. I had been on vacation and I had found
00:28out about
00:29this part, like back in, I don't know, February or something of last year. And I really have so
00:38much respect for you for you. It's such a beautiful show. And so I read for this part, didn't hear
00:42anything. And then we got back from a vacation and we were baggage claim. It was a Friday and I
00:51found
00:52out that not only did I have the part, I'd forgotten about this part. It was in September.
00:56Not only did I have it, but I was going to be naked on Monday. So, so I had, and
01:01I'd been like
01:02eating bread and drinking wine, just cheating on all any kind of a diet or anything. Um, so I didn't
01:09have, I had like three days. Um, and, uh, and so it was really quick. It was really quick, but,
01:16but it's
01:17really interesting because I, I agree with you. There is something in that scene, you know, the,
01:23the scene where I'm talking that when you first meet me about the rhythm of my speech and the way
01:27I'm talking, that's not me at all. You know, it's definitely different. When did you transition?
01:3414. That's why you're poreless. Never went through puberty. It's beautiful.
01:40And it is kind of very, sort of objectifying, you know, in a way, um, sort of treating the body
01:48is
01:48like, cause he is a scientist, you know, and he has that kind of scientific mind. And we did that
01:56scene so many times cause Sam Levinson is, he's really incredible to work with. He's obsessed
02:04with performance, like almost nobody else I've worked with. He's he, so we really did it a lot
02:10of times and we ended up with what you saw, obviously, which was a very, um, you know, kind
02:15of, uh, you know, kind of stilted scientific kind of guy. He, he kind of softens up though, as, as,
02:22as it goes, as it goes on. And I think he really falls for, uh, for, for Jules, you know?
02:29Um,
02:29but in that, yeah, in that scene, he is, he is very, uh, very scientific. My father's a surgeon,
02:35but I didn't, I didn't model the character. A lot of people were talking about the episode
02:40three scene where you're wrapping Hunter in plastic. I just might keep you forever.
02:51I think our recapper thought it was a kind of a fun nod to Twin Peaks. I'm curious. I mean,
02:56I was like the plastic sheeting, the plastic surgeon, where did you think that came from
03:01as an impulse that he wanted to explore? I mean, I have no idea. Like Sam, like who,
03:06who knows? But I was surprised because I didn't realize that I'd have like an industrial size
03:12saran wrap thing. I just pictured, I didn't know what was going to happen, but I pictured
03:18just something out of a box you'd get at, at the grocery and kind of club being close to her
03:24and
03:24wrapping. But we, it was so beautifully shot. They set this shot up and she's in the middle of the
03:30room. And I, and I came in and saw the setup and I was like, Oh my gosh, this is
03:34like,
03:35like I'm deifying her, you know? Um, and what was interesting about it was that he had me walk
03:41and I don't know if you could see it in the, in the shots, but, but he had me really
03:45far away from
03:46her. So he's had the, all this saran wrap in the room from between her and me. And it,
03:52and this really wide circle that got smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller.
03:58And, um, I thought that was just really interesting. And, you know, the last was her
04:04hands and I was getting closer and closer to her. Um, I don't know. It was completely unexpected.
04:09It felt like a piece of art. It felt like almost like a performance art to me.
04:13And there's this heartbreaking kind of like line that he gives her when he's accusing her of
04:17sitting, sleeping with the guys behind her back where I like you, but I love my family.
04:21I cannot be coming home with a STD. I like you, but I love my family and I will not
04:29put them at
04:30risk. Camera stays on Jules's face and you see how this tears her apart. Um, I'm curious if Alice
04:35even registers what he's done, what he said, um, and what does that tell you about how he sees Jules?
04:40I don't think he has. And I think, I think Alice is really a lot, a lot about power.
04:45And I think he, Matt, he's completely in, in my sort of world of thinking of him. He's masking his,
04:51his affection for her. Uh, and I think he does that always. I think that he doesn't give her a
04:57lot.
04:57He kind of, he kind of just gives a little bit and just to keep the power. Um, and yeah,
05:04I think he, you're right. He, she does, she is really hurt. Uh, she is hurt by that. And, um,
05:12but you know, like, you know, as he says, he's got, he can't risk, uh, you know, any kind of
05:17STD or
05:18anything like that. Cause he does have this, this family that he's prioritizing. He's not going to
05:24leave the family. I don't think we'll see. His very first line is I do what God didn't.
05:30I do what God didn't. Same with you. That's one way to put it.
05:38Well, is there another? We defy the natural order of things, age, gravity, sex.
05:44And I think that's a really interesting line considering all the religious overtones this
05:47season. Um, how do you see that line and what it tells you about where he fits into these more
05:54overarching good and evil religious themes? Yeah, that's wow. That's such a,
05:59that's a really, really interesting thing to think about. Um, I mean, I, I think he,
06:05I think he kind of, I think he, it sort of says a lot about his ego. Cause he sees
06:11he's very,
06:12even though he's kind of at times shy in that scene and, and, and tentative, he sees himself
06:19like a God, a God-like figure. And I think he has a lot of pride in what he does
06:24and kind of,
06:25in a way, flaunting, um, the spiritual realm and, and, and seeing himself deifying himself in that,
06:34in that way, you know? Um, but yeah, it is really, it really says a lot about, uh, about his
06:41ego
06:42for sure.
06:43So here's what it's been like to work with Hunter. Cause you definitely have a lot of
06:47intimate and emotional scenes to, to, to navigate.
06:50Yeah. She's so cool. Like we, we, our first scene was, we were naked together and we were,
06:56there was the sex scene and she's so easy and just chill. And she's such a great actress. I mean,
07:04she's so fun to work with. She's so open and free and just no, there's nothing holding her back.
07:11Like she's just like this kind of easy flow of energy, which is what we love to see on camera.
07:19Um, and, um, she was really, you know, she was really to me, welcoming and cool, just cool. And,
07:25you know, she's, she's amazing. She's really amazing. And, you know, by the way, she's,
07:29and you all might already know this, but she's an incredible visual artist. She, she did all the
07:34paintings. I mean, she was, we did a, we, we did a scene where she was, she was literally painting,
07:40a painting, you know, during the middle, before, during and after. And she went to art school.
07:46She's a, she's a really great, great artist. I have to ask about the set. Like, it feels like
07:50she's in this modern industrial, like tower Rapunzel situation where she's being kept
07:55like a princess in a storybook, but it's also very LA and very noir-y. What was it like to
08:01shoot
08:01there? And how did that kind of inform how you saw the relationship? Oh, I was blown away. That set
08:06was unreal. I mean, the, the, the, it was all LA and they had it just the way it was
08:13set
08:13up. It was the, the, it's the, um, the apartment is elevated off the studio floor. So you have
08:19a sense of it not being, you know, like a lot of productions would just have it on the
08:23same, on the ground. And then, and then the, the, the Scott, the, the buildings and the
08:28skyline, they had all these little lights in there. I mean, it's just, they had to have
08:31such an incredible budget. Um, and it's really stark. I feel like it's really stark
08:36and shh, I think, uh, jewels will kind of put, put her own touches on that place, but
08:43I, I haven't put any of my, there's nothing of me in it. I feel like Ellis doesn't want
08:49to leave residual pieces of himself. Cause I think he's scared, you know, symbolically
08:54of, of getting too close to her. Um, you know, so he it's the off limits for him.
08:59Before I go, what was your favorite part about working on Euphoria?
09:02Uh, you know what it was, it was really working with, you know, uh, Sam, you
09:07know, and of course Hunter too, but, but Sam, like he, he just really, uh, it was
09:13really challenging and in the best, in the best way, you know, as an artist, you
09:16know, being kind of pushed and, uh, I just, that was really great. It was, it was
09:21kind of exciting, scary and fulfilling.
