00:00Stars started Wednesday edition of Shine Time.
00:04Rob Palenka reveals the plan on the Lakers for agents, Stars.
00:08Wemby shows he's a true superstar.
00:11Did you see megastar Paul Skeens last night?
00:15And ESPN star Peter Schrager joins us to talk NFL and Knicks.
00:21Shine Time starts right now.
00:30He's got it the other way.
00:31Picks to the corner.
00:32Champagne.
00:34Saps on his hands a lot.
00:35Eight-year man Reed is in.
00:37Wemby and is doing a lot.
00:40Box around the right.
00:41Look for Wemby.
00:43Disco bare.
00:44Something matters.
00:45Harper on this.
00:46Wemby put it back in.
00:48Wemby piece.
00:49That's a lot.
00:50Wait a minute.
00:52Are we going from Harlem Roadrunner stuff out here?
00:55Tonight, some of the stuff that Wemby was doing, you can't,
00:59you don't really have too much of an answer for it.
01:04Just kind of hope he misses.
01:06That was the perfect soundbite from Anthony Edwards.
01:10Wemby, are you kidding me?
01:12Able to elbow the Minnesota Timberwolves to the brink of elimination.
01:19That's what a true superstar does.
01:21You have a game.
01:22You get thrown out.
01:24You get thrown out in the second quarter.
01:25You can't play in the second half.
01:27You deserve that penalty.
01:29And if you're a true superstar, you don't let negativity linger.
01:35Jason Tatum has a quick example.
01:37This is my issue with him.
01:39One bad game in the playoffs could turn into a couple.
01:43Victor Wemby is a true superstar.
01:45He is an unstoppable freak.
01:48And when you saw Wemby get thrown out, obviously, disaster, debacle.
01:54Then you wanted to see how he was going to come out in terms of being strong and physical and
01:59dominant.
02:00You got that answer instantly.
02:02We're showing you the first quarter highlights because there are many of them.
02:0618 points for Wemby in the first quarter.
02:10The final score was lopsided.
02:12I don't want to hear about a close third quarter.
02:14Wemby had it going on.
02:16This was a stop what you're doing and watch kind of ball game from a stop what you're doing and
02:22watch kind of superstar.
02:23Victor Wemby one of one in terms of the ability to score, the ability to hit from the inside, the
02:30outside.
02:31I mean, look at that dribble drive right there.
02:33His rebounding was off the charts, his defense blocking shots, altering shots.
02:38And here's the thing, right, when you look at it from a Spurs perspective, the Spurs are a really excellent
02:46team.
02:46The crowd was amazing last night.
02:48Joint was jumping.
02:49San Antonio is an amazing market.
02:52Fox was great.
02:53Castle was great.
02:54Tim Duncan and David Robinson couldn't get enough of the ambiance last night.
02:58This team absolutely had it going on.
03:02And, look, when you take a look at Victor Wemby one of them and who he is and what he
03:06does, 27 points, 17 rebounds, three blocks, 126 to 97 kind of destruction.
03:13And to get all these points in the paint going up against a Rudy Gobert team, just wild.
03:21Look, this is the most amount of points that a Rudy Gobert team has ever given up in the paint,
03:28in the playoffs.
03:29That, to me, of all the stats and facts and figures from this game, that matters.
03:33I am always a defender of Rudy Gobert as a star.
03:36Rudy Gobert is an impact defensive player.
03:38That, to me, was pretty special and pretty sensational.
03:41And if you're a fan of the Spurs, a fan of Wemby, a fan of basketball, you appreciate how he
03:48is able to take a negative, turn it into an ultimate positive.
03:52But, look, I know that OKC just won eights in a row in the playoffs.
03:58San Antonio can hang with them if not beat them.
04:01Like, if you're asking, to me, there are three different scenarios for the Spurs and the Thunder.
04:06This is not going to be a short series.
04:08And if it sounds like I'm eliminating Minnesota already, good.
04:11That's the point.
04:11Minnesota, unbelievable season, unbelievable job in the postseason.
04:15Anthony Edwards is a superstar.
04:17The way he's dealt with injury and adversity, they have no shot of coming back and winning this series.
04:22The OKC-Spurs matchup in the Western Conference Finals will end in one of three ways.
04:27It'll either be OKC in six, OKC in seven, or the Spurs win.
04:31That's what's going to happen here.
04:32I would be stunned if it was a sweep, and I don't think it's even going to be a five
04:36-game series.
04:37And it's because of Victor Wembenyama.
04:40When you have this kind of star, I know he's young.
04:43He's built for this.
04:44He's built for the moment.
04:45And I can't get enough.
04:47And if you had any doubts, and you shouldn't have, about Victor Wembenyama,
04:51that game, that first quarter, that overall dominant performance,
04:54that tells you everything you need to know.
04:57Look, you knew when the Knicks and their fans destroyed the 76ers,
05:02something big was about to go down in Philly.
05:05Nick Nurse is a quality coach and a man.
05:07I don't wish for him to be fired, but when you lose in this fashion,
05:12everybody is under the microscope, and everybody is going to get looked at.
05:15It's just funny.
05:16Like, yeah, let's fire Nick Nurse and go hire, like, Thibodeau or Jamal Moseley,
05:19who just got fired for doing the same thing.
05:21You know, it's just a cesspool.
05:22It's a recycling.
05:23It is.
05:24It's a recycling game.
05:24It's ridiculous.
05:26Listen, I think it was pretty easy to predict here
05:29how this was ultimately going to go.
05:32And I am always pleasantly surprised when something actually goes right
05:36for the Philadelphia 76ers.
05:39Bag it, Daryl Morey.
05:40Something had to happen.
05:41Because it wasn't just a Knicks sweep, which is bad enough.
05:46It was the Knicks going into Philly and stealing the soul here.
05:50Stealing the soul of the Philadelphia 76ers.
05:55When you look at all the fans and you look at all the ass kickings and the lopsided scores.
06:00Something needed to happen.
06:03Daryl Morey, to me, has always been a myth.
06:07The most overrated executive in the history of the NBA.
06:11I thought that he was, you know, frankly, and he had a lot of water carriers in the press in
06:18Houston.
06:19A lot of people who, you know, do what I do for a living.
06:23Oh, Daryl Morey could do no wrong.
06:25That Houston team was built brilliantly.
06:28I was always a bunch of noise and a bunch of nonsense.
06:31And then he goes to Philadelphia.
06:33And the first thing that he does is he trades for James Harden.
06:36He knew the Harden story from Houston.
06:39A tremendous player, but he's a handful.
06:41He can't win with them.
06:42And he traded for them.
06:43It was the deal, obviously, with Brooklyn, the Ben Simmons trade.
06:47And that was a whole mess.
06:48And Harden called him a liar.
06:50And would he get the extension?
06:51And Morey wouldn't give it to him.
06:53You made a deal with the devil that you knew.
06:55People say, oh, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.
06:57In this case, Harden was the literal devil here for Daryl Morey.
07:01And I blame Morey for looking at it and saying,
07:03this is going to be different somehow in Philadelphia.
07:06So that turned into a debacle.
07:08That turned into a disaster.
07:09Then you look at the Paul George contract, which is asinine.
07:13The Joel Embiid contract, the extension, which made no sense.
07:17You're never going to win with Joel Embiid.
07:19I mean, this is like a post-Malone situation.
07:24Circles.
07:25You just keep going round and around and around.
07:28Congrats to the next GM of the Sixers, who ultimately is going to get fired because he's going to have
07:35Joel Embiid on his team.
07:36And I honestly think Joel Embiid is untradeable because he's never available and he's a losing ball player and there
07:44was no process.
07:45And he brings his kid to the press conference to be a shield because he's losing in the second round
07:51again.
07:52I mean, I would trade Joel Embiid.
07:54That would be my first thing that I would do.
07:56If I'm Bob Myers, who's running this search for Josh Harris, who is completely overmatched as a team owner, I
08:03mean, I would tell the next general manager, you must trade Joel Embiid.
08:07And I'm struggling to find a team that would take him.
08:11Maybe it's someone that takes a flyer.
08:13I acknowledge the talent for Embiid, but obviously a losing ball player.
08:17Maybe it's someone who, like the Golden State Warriors, doesn't care about what they pay for the contract and luxury
08:23tax and the second apron.
08:25Maybe it's someone who needs to sell tickets like the Clippers.
08:28Maybe it's the Brooklyn Nets.
08:30It's very difficult to find some kind of match here.
08:34But, I mean, this is why Darryl Morey had to go.
08:37Not to mention he made the Jerry McClain deal, which we went nuts on when they made it because it
08:42made no sense.
08:43This gave him away haphazardly at the trade deadline, and now he's a bucket getter for OKC.
08:50Morey has no idea what the hell he's doing.
08:52I'm happy Nick Nurse this day, and he's a championship coach.
08:55I am truly happy that Maxie is on the Sixers.
09:00I'm truly happy that Edgecombe's on the Sixers.
09:02These are terrific, young, energized, intelligent ballplayers who are guys who, in theory,
09:08would be linchpins to building something special.
09:13But it's impossible to feel great about anything with Philadelphia as long as you have Joel Embiid.
09:21I mean, I don't see anyone taking him.
09:23Paul George, that contract's, you know, unmovable.
09:27Why would you ever, and we killed him at the time, why would you bring in Paul George?
09:33I mean, podcast pee instead of playoff pee, never gets it done when it matters the most?
09:39I mean, this is, it makes no sense.
09:42So I'm happy that they made a change.
09:44They had to.
09:45We made this point on Shine Time the other day.
09:47It's like the Boston series never even happened.
09:50And you can make the case that Philly in some way, shape, or form overachieved based upon injury
09:57and issues during the regular season.
09:59They beat Boston.
10:00It was amazing.
10:01It was amazing.
10:01It was stunning.
10:02But how they lost to the Knicks, heads needed to roll.
10:05You couldn't just run it back in Philadelphia.
10:08So that, that was a disaster.
10:11A total disaster of a way that the season finished.
10:15Darryl Morey, to me, is as overrated as an executive you could ever find in the history of sports.
10:21And he has to go.
10:22And I think it's the right move.
10:24I know it's the right move, but the issues in Philadelphia are so much more and run so much
10:31deeper than what we have when you look at just, you know, shifting outs one exact for another.
10:37You have to have a cleansing.
10:39This team cannot function until Joel Embiid is an ex-Philadelphia 76er.
10:46Our next guest covers one sports, but is a super fan of one particular NBA team.
10:55The Knicks.
11:01You would think that I'm in New York right now instead of Philadelphia.
11:06This is absolutely not the way that fans were hoping to end the Sixers season.
11:12You can see that I am surrounded by Knicks fans right now.
11:16What's up?
11:17Of the Sixers fans I doubt had to say.
11:20Sell the team, fire and ignorance.
11:22Everybody go on, go on, call on.
11:24Like Kyle Lowry coach.
11:25And I love Joel, and I hope he stays.
11:27I love the whole team.
11:29They did amazing, but it's just heartbreaking.
11:32It really is.
11:34Another day, another celebrity Knicks fan here on Shine Time.
11:38Joining us right now, ESPN superstar.
11:41You'll see him tomorrow night at 8 p.m. on ESPN's NFL Schedule Release Show.
11:46He is the critically acclaimed host of the Schrager Hour.
11:50Diehard Knicks fan, my guy, the great Peter Schrager.
11:54Peter, how are you?
11:56Let's go.
11:57I'm doing amazing, Adam.
11:58Thanks for having me on.
11:59My debut on Shine Time.
12:01I got to tell you, listen, I am so excited, so excited to have you on the show.
12:05And we are both diehard Knicks fans.
12:07We've been talking Knicks forever, during the lean years.
12:09I've known you for 30 years, Peter.
12:12I've never seen anything quite like this team.
12:15Your opinion, what makes this Knicks team, this run, so amazing, so fun?
12:20And what makes Jalen Brunson the ideal New York City superstar?
12:24Okay, you and I grew up in loving the Knicks in the late 80s, early 90s, and then on.
12:30And I think those 92, 93, 94 teams were so special because of the grit and because of
12:36the way they played together.
12:37And they kind of symbolized whatever your version of New York was.
12:40So, when you had a Greg Anthony getting in the face of Kevin Johnson and all the stuff
12:46that they used to have back then, but then also Mason and Oakley and Charles Smith, and
12:51then you go to the Anthony Bonners and all these guys that just pitched in.
12:54But, like, Derek Harper and Doc Rivers, like, they didn't take any crap from anybody.
12:58And, of course, Starks and Ewing.
13:00So, this team here feels like it has a bit of that.
13:04There's a fabric of New York where, okay, Hart isn't going to take anything from anyone.
13:08Mitchell Robinson's not going to take anything from anyone.
13:10And then you add in, like, Alvarado off the bench and Deuce.
13:13And there's a real connection to the city, but also the way they play in that they're
13:17not necessarily tough guys, but they don't take crap from anyone.
13:22I'm obsessed with that.
13:23I love an Anthony Bonner reference.
13:25I mean, that's about as great as it gets.
13:26And, look, to me, Shreng.
13:27We got him from the Sacramento Kings, I want to say.
13:30Yes, 100% without question.
13:33Might have traded Pete Chilcutt for him, which is okay, and that's fine.
13:38Shreng, the minimum expectation for me, NBA Finals.
13:41And it's going to happen.
13:42And I truly think, and I'm not getting greedy here because I'm watching them play,
13:47I think the Knicks can compete with OKC.
13:49Now, we've both never seen a Knicks championship.
13:54Is this going to be the year?
13:55It feels like it.
13:57There's no team playing better.
13:58Now, you could tell me the Thunder haven't lost yet, and they are champions, and I respect
14:03them, obviously.
14:05But I put them in the same conversation right now, the way they are playing.
14:08The Knicks are blowing out opponents, and they did it against the Hawks a couple times.
14:12Then, obviously, these four games against the Philadelphia 76ers were unlike any series
14:16I've ever watched as a Knicks fan, where there was no feeling of stress or pressure after
14:22the start of Game 3 when they were like, all right, we're just going to take over this
14:25game.
14:25The Mitchell Robinson dunk on Embiid basically was like, all right, take your foot off the
14:30gas, enjoy the Mother's Day weekend.
14:32You don't have any stress about anything.
14:33Adam, I respect the heck out of the Thunder, and what they did this year without their second
14:37best player on the court for much of the season was mastery.
14:40But I also think this Knicks team can compete, and we've beaten them before, and why not?
14:44Let's do it again.
14:45NFL schedule release tomorrow.
14:47I'm a schedule release wonk just like you.
14:50I mean, to me, NFL execs, when you think about Mike North and Ani Bose and Hans Schroeder,
14:55that's my version of the big three.
14:57That's right.
14:58That's my big three.
14:59Your big three.
15:00Our big three.
15:01What makes this, because the fans love it, such an awesome event?
15:05And what are you looking forward to, and what do you look for on schedule release night?
15:09Well, I think there's two things at play here.
15:11I think there's a sarcastic response, and the cynic will say, like, oh, the schedule
15:15release.
15:16Like, what do you mean?
15:17We're not the ones making it into something.
15:19The broadcast partners are.
15:20The networks are.
15:21Because when you and I grew up, you go to a Disney up front, it was, here's Grey's Anatomy,
15:26here's Wisteria Lane, here's...
15:28Now it's like, we've got Dancing with the Stars, and we've got sports, and let's talk
15:33about the Savannah Bananas, and let's talk about the schedule, because we're about to announce
15:36something, all of these teams, and they can only do what they can do, it's the networks
15:41and the broadcast partners, the Netflix, the Amazon, who are like, we're going to bring
15:46out Shabuzi and Andrew Whitworth, and we're going to sing and dance for you.
15:49It used to be, you know, here's Will and Grace, or here's Frazier.
15:53Well, that doesn't exist anymore, you know?
15:55It's football, so it's become bigger than ever, and I personally love it, because I love
16:00to do the math of it, and see why this team was scheduled here, and what the NFL
16:04thing, like, the fact that the Bengals, or the team they sent to Madrid, is very interesting
16:11to me.
16:11It means that Burrow has a little bit of some international appeal, and Burrow has a little
16:17bit of flavor, because they could have sent four other teams to Madrid to play the Falcons,
16:21they chose the Bengals, the Cincinnati Bengals, where for us, growing up in the Achilles Smith,
16:25Kajana Carter years, you would never think you would ever put them in a showcase game.
16:28They were picked to go represent America in the NFL in a game that's being played in
16:34the same stadium as Real Madrid.
16:36That's the kind of stuff that I absolutely love.
16:38100%.
16:38I think the Bengals have real Super Bowl potential this year, and Burrow has swagger, Chase
16:42and Higgins, the whole thing, love Sexy Dexy, that deal, so we're on the same page here
16:47on what the Bengals represent.
16:49ESPN starts the Monday Night Football slate with the Chiefs and the Broncos.
16:52Look, I think the team to beat in the AFC West, the Chargers.
16:55I'm kind of obsessed with the Raiders' offseason.
16:58AFC West is a banger this year.
17:01What's your read on the division?
17:02Yeah, I think that the Chargers come in with a healthy offensive line, so immediately you
17:08think, all right, well, they were awesome when they had Alton Slater, and then they
17:11were terrible when they didn't have them.
17:14But to me, all eyes are on Kansas City.
17:16I know Denver was a fun story, and they had those miracle wins, and they made that little
17:19run in the playoffs, and I'm not saying little in a demeaning way, but here's Kansas City
17:23beaten down on the mat, and yet they came back.
17:29Kelsey's back.
17:30Mahomes is coming back from this injury.
17:32Stone Cold Jones is back.
17:33And they went four for four, first four picks, defensive players in the draft.
17:39They lost a lot this offseason, but I am fascinated with the fact that they're all rallying around
17:43each other, and they're like, no, no, no, no, this era's not done yet.
17:46Let's try to do this one more time.
17:48So the Chiefs, to me, are the team I'm watching, and as much as we always want to anoint the
17:53next team, the Broncos actually did it last year.
17:55They won the division, and they swept the Chiefs.
17:57I'm still waiting for the Chargers to actually do it.
18:00I'd love to see the Bears, Schrag, start the season in Seattle against the Champs.
18:05I think, right, doesn't it feel like that'll be the pick?
18:07That has to be, right?
18:08Or the Patriots.
18:09It's one of the two.
18:11I don't want to see the rematch for a variety of reasons.
18:14To me, the Bears, that's a team that has Paul Gravitas, Big Marked, Caleb Williams, Ben
18:22Johnson, a lot of pop, a lot of sizzle.
18:25That, to me, is the matchup.
18:27You're at the New York Post.
18:28You don't think Mike Vrabel walking through the tunnel in week one is going to cause a
18:32little bit of stir?
18:34That's true.
18:35I mean, in terms of the back page, that'd be unbelievable, Schrag.
18:38Let's be honest here.
18:41The truth of the matter is, Seattle doesn't necessarily have the glitz and the glamour
18:45of what we're used to, but they were so dominant in that playoff run in the Super Bowl.
18:49And then you bring in Chicago with Caleb Williams.
18:52I would love to see that be in the opening game.
18:53I think Caleb's got a real shot at MVP, and the Bears have a real shot at representing
18:57the NFC in the playoffs through the Super Bowl.
18:59And I think they have the hardest schedule I was looking at, like, based on last year's
19:03stuff.
19:03I don't think that should be a problem.
19:04I think this team is legit, and they showed us last year.
19:07Totally agree.
19:07Now, Seattle's defending a title, but I still think the Rams are the team to beat in the
19:12West and the NFC.
19:13I thought the Rams' offseason was both amazing and wild.
19:18I talked to Sean McVay on my SiriusXM radio show.
19:21I appreciate it.
19:22I love McVay.
19:23I love the conversation.
19:24And he loves this team.
19:25And you know how to speak, McVay.
19:27What's your take on the Rams?
19:28Yeah, his whole thing is above the neck, above the neck, meaning, like, mentally, where are
19:33they?
19:33And they are all in a good place.
19:35They bring everyone basically back, and they add Trent McDuffie.
19:39We made the point.
19:40If they had traded the 13th pick for McDuffie and then drafted Ty Simpson at 29, I think
19:45everyone would say, Anthony plus draft.
19:46Well, they flipped it.
19:47They traded the 29th for McDuffie, and then they reached on Simpson, to be honest.
19:52The only thing I would say with the Rams is that this is kind of an unnecessary move if
19:59you're looking for everyone to be kumbaya, and there might be some landmines along the
20:03way with drafting Ty Simpson in that quarterback's room, especially if they feel like one of these
20:09other receivers or tight ends is having an outstanding season, or if Stafford feels like
20:13he's not getting what he wants from that wide receiver's room, and there could have been
20:16someone else, and Simpson's sitting on ice.
20:18I will note this, though, and I will tell you this until the start of the season.
20:22I know Les Snead very well.
20:24You know Les Snead very well.
20:25I know McVay very well.
20:27They're not done.
20:29There might be another move down the road, and I don't know what that move might be.
20:32It might be something small.
20:33It might be something massive.
20:34It might be whatever, but these guys don't sleep at night thinking, all right, our roster
20:38is set in stone.
20:39So anyone saying, well, they didn't get the big player, or they didn't make the big move.
20:42They took Simpson.
20:43This is a fluid thing.
20:44They don't look at roster as free agency and draft.
20:47They look at it as a 12-month-of-the-year, 365-day thing.
20:51So I would be shocked if this is the roster that takes the field week one when they open
20:56the season.
20:57Triggs, the Giants start the season in prime time at home against the Cowboys on Sunday
21:00night football.
21:01I think the Giants are going to be a really strong team this year.
21:05Eight to ten wins.
21:07I love John Harbaugh.
21:08What are your expectations?
21:10I think maybe more.
21:12Wow.
21:13I love that.
21:14I think this might be an 11 or 12-win team.
21:17I really do.
21:18I think the Jimmys and Joes are there.
21:21I think the players are, they have a very good roster and early returns on the Harbaugh,
21:26which, by the way, I was a little bit, okay, let's see how this all plays out based on the
21:32hiring process.
21:33And he's coming, oh, wait, we got to wait, and what's going on with Shane?
21:37But he's on board.
21:39And in that offensive room, you've got Matt Nagy, Greg Roman, Brian Callahan, three really
21:44talented play callers, and two of them former head coaches.
21:48And then Harbaugh is like just the ultimate adult in the room.
21:51And the way he handled the Malik Neighbors podcast appearance during the draft, I thought,
21:57was a master class on leadership to 2026 and dealing with this new generation.
22:01And he put his arm around Neighbors, and I love him.
22:03I love the fact that he cares.
22:04I love it.
22:05And we just got to talk about how we want to express this.
22:08I'm not trying to go overboard because we're in our market, but it has been some dark years
22:13for the New York football teams.
22:14And I don't think double-digit wins is crazy for the New York Giants.
22:18I'm with you completely, and I love the Cowboys this year, and that's who the Giants are playing
22:22to start the season on Sunday Night Football.
22:24Smart plan, excellent team.
22:26Schrags, I don't think this is May hyperbole when I say Dallas, NFC East winner, Dallas playing
22:32on Championship Sunday, Dallas true Super Bowl contender.
22:36Do you want to slow me down in any way, shape, or form?
22:38No, you and I are in the same boat.
22:39And I went on first take on ESPN a couple of weeks ago, or last week, and I said Super
22:43Bowl
22:43contender, and Stephen A. Smith laughed in my face.
22:45But I mean it.
22:46I think they checked the box in every need that they went out and sought after in this
22:52offseason, and it's all on defense, and let's figure it out.
22:55Now, George Pickens is the great variable.
22:57We'll see what happens, and we'll talk plenty about it all offseason, as we do.
23:00But Adam, I look at that defense and where it was week one a year ago, and then to start
23:06this season, and all of a sudden you've got Quinnen Williams and Rashawn Gary and Caleb Downs
23:11and Malachi Lawrence, and you add in all the different additions that they did through
23:15the draft and free agency, and it's a better defense.
23:18More importantly, Christian Parker, their new defensive coordinator, is an absolute stud.
23:22I've gotten to know him.
23:23I think he's a future head coach.
23:25And when I say future, I don't mean 10 years down the line.
23:27I mean potentially next year or the year after.
23:29He was a defensive backs coach in Denver, then a D-backs coach in Philly, and he brings
23:34that swagger himself.
23:35He's only 34 years old, but I believe he's going to be a huge difference for that defense
23:40where they're going to have more bite than they've had in recent years.
23:42I'm totally with you on Christian Parker.
23:44I love that.
23:44All right, last one for you, Shregs, and I'll kind of whisper this.
23:47I love the Jets offseason.
23:49I thought it was smart in every way.
23:52I think the offense is set up for a quarterback in 2027.
23:56I like Geno for this year.
23:58Where are you on the Jets?
24:00Do you think they're moving?
24:01And I'm not saying playoffs.
24:02Six wins max.
24:03We'll find out about Aaron Glenn.
24:05What's your take on the Jets?
24:07I guess it's kind of anti what I do for a living in saying that the biggest win for
24:13the Jets this offseason was that we didn't know what the heck the Jets were going to do
24:16this offseason.
24:17Like, it felt like Mugi operated in a cloud of secrecy and silence, and nothing from that
24:24facility left that facility, which this is sometimes just media garble, whatever.
24:30But in years past, you'd get stories, you'd get leaks, you'd get weird things, and then
24:36it would turn out to be true.
24:38This year, David Bailey was the pick.
24:41Right up until the selection, Arvell Reese was the favorite in Vegas to be selected.
24:46This year, everyone said Brees Hall is going to be upset, be disgruntled, and he's going
24:51to play on the tag, whatever.
24:51He signs a massive extension on a Friday at 2 o'clock when no one was really expecting
24:56it.
24:57I like the Jets roster.
24:59Obviously, it's young.
25:00I do think Geno Smith will be better than he was a year ago.
25:05I just wonder if it's enough good football and signs of it where this morose and this
25:12mirth that follows this team is kind of lifted, and then next year, there's this great excitement
25:16around the draft.
25:16Peter, you're the best.
25:18I'll be watching you on ESPN tomorrow night.
25:20Happy schedule release to you and yours, my friend.
25:23You are the best, Adam.
25:25Let's shine on baseball where David Stearns of the Mets got a little bit more than animated
25:29in his usual press conference with the media yesterday.
25:33David, it's been about two weeks since you offered a sentence to a single entity about
25:38the status of your manager.
25:39I just had a couple of questions about it.
25:41You said, we don't see this as a manager problem.
25:43Whose problem is it, and what are you doing to fix that problem?
25:46Yeah, I think we've underachieved.
25:49There's no question.
25:52Collectively, as an organization, we've got to figure out a way to get better, and I think
25:57we will.
25:57And the second part of the 16 words you offered was, we don't intend to make a change.
26:02What does intend mean?
26:03Like, what length does this manager have?
26:05Look, I'll let my words speak for themselves.
26:09I've been very clear and consistent that I think Mendy does a really good job.
26:15I believe Mendy does a really good job.
26:18I like coming to work with him every day.
26:21I'm not going to address this every two weeks when I talk to you guys, and I'll leave it at
26:26that.
26:26All right, guy from the Post, Joel Sherman, grilling David Stearns and asking great questions.
26:31And yeah, Stearns got a little snippy right there.
26:34Now, the Mets did go out and get a W, and it was energizing, as I always like when you
26:40dip down to the farm and you call up a big-time prospect.
26:44And you see A.J. Ewing have a terrific and a tremendous debut, and I thought that was
26:50inspiring for the Mets.
26:51But look, when you're David Stearns and you put together an awful roster and you're paying
26:57$360 million, that is a mess.
27:00That is a fiasco.
27:02That is terrible.
27:03And when you endorse garbage in terms of watching the Mets play and you watch Carlos Mendoza manage,
27:10you're going to get great journalists like Joel Sherman from the Post ask question after
27:16question after question.
27:18So, you know, there was a golden opportunity to make a change, and they didn't do it.
27:23And take a look at, as compared to Trask, the Philadelphia Phillies, what transpired.
27:28When you see the Philadelphia Phillies, they fired Rob Thompson, here's Don Mattingly, and
27:33the Phillies go 11-3 in the first 14 games with Donnie Baseball.
27:37The Mets weren't necessarily going to have that kind of gaudy record, but keeping it
27:42on the same path really didn't make any sense in any way, shape, or form.
27:47So, that's a mess here when you look at it.
27:50So, just a complete and utter fiasco in every possible way, if you're a Mets fan.
27:56And man, there was juice and energy with Ewing getting dunked on in a good way, without question.
28:02But, boy, that was something.
28:05And I was just thrilled for him that he had his moment, had his time to shine at Citi Field.
28:10Loved every single second of that.
28:12And, man, I was a big fan of seeing Ewing get his moments, getting that Gatorade bath.
28:18You feel great for a kid like that.
28:20Mets fans love it.
28:21I just wish that Stearns would have assembled a better roster.
28:25And when he had a chance to fire the Skipper a few weeks ago, he still could do it now.
28:30But there was that window to make change the exact same time when you saw what transpired
28:34with everything going on with the Philadelphia Phillies.
28:37A missed opportunity here for David Stearns.
28:41Remember when Paul Skeens had a rough first start?
28:44Me neither.
28:44Here's the game's best ace on coming out for the eighth inning last night.
28:49How about when you walked off in the eighth?
28:51Did you feel like you'd done everything you could do out there?
28:53Yeah, I think in the eighth, my first pitch, I think, was 93.
28:58And I was like, probably shouldn't have come back out.
29:01And I told that to Donnie after, but just a long inning before.
29:05And sometimes it takes a little bit to get going, especially late in the game.
29:08But, yeah, glad we got through the eighth.
29:11And, you know, it was a good game all around.
29:16Paul Skeens is an absolute stud.
29:18I can't get enough.
29:20I mean, watching him do his thing, I mean, it's ridiculous.
29:24Let me give you this stat on Skeens last night, okay?
29:26He now has back-to-back games of eight scoreless innings while allowing two or fewer hits, zero walks.
29:33One of four pitchers in baseball history to do that.
29:39One of the others on that list is a guy you've never seen pitch, but I'm pretty sure you've heard
29:45of him.
29:46Cy Young, you might want to change the name of the award to the Paul Skeens.
29:53That's where we're headed.
29:55Stop me when I say something crazy.
29:58I want you to take a look at what Skeens has done in terms of the ERA from that first
30:02game when he was at Citi Field, right?
30:05And remember, O'Neal Cruz made two awful plays in the outfield.
30:10Neither one was ruled an error.
30:12Certainly one of them should have been.
30:14The other he lost in the sun.
30:16Look at where his ERA was after game one.
30:21Six, seven point five.
30:25An ERA of 67.
30:27And now it's under two.
30:30This is insane.
30:32He struck out the side last night three times.
30:37Three times.
30:38That doesn't happen.
30:40Ten strikeouts, no walks, two hits last night.
30:44Unbelievable stuff from Paul Skeens.
30:47When you start looking at must-see TV in sports, this guy is at the top of the list.
30:55And I picked the Pirates before the season to make the playoffs.
30:58Still absolutely believe it's going to happen.
31:00There is a reason why Paul Skeens is on our show constantly.
31:05Because he is as dominant an athlete in the big four sports in North America as you could find.
31:14He deserves to be celebrated and appreciated and recognized for his kick-ass mentality, his domination.
31:20And literally, he's in the books like Cy Young.
31:24And he's pitching once again like he's going to win another Cy Young.
31:29The Dodgers are on a losing streak.
31:32And this is officially a deal.
31:34The Dodgers' biggest rival, the San Francisco Giants.
31:37And the Giants, for the second straight game, march into L.A.
31:40And beat the stuffing out of the Dodgers.
31:43The Dodgers have lost four straight.
31:45The Dodgers have lost nine of their last 13.
31:48This is officially a situation.
31:51This is officially a deal.
31:54Now, I still think the Dodgers, and if you look in Vegas, look on DraftKings, Dodgers are the heavy favorites
32:00here to win the World Series.
32:02I still think the Dodgers deserve that kind of credits, credibility.
32:07They've done it back-to-back years.
32:09They do look right now old.
32:13We talked to Dylan Hernandez about that from the California Post on Friday's sizzling edition of Shine Time.
32:18They look like they're getting a little bit long in the tooth.
32:22Now, Edwin Diaz is out.
32:24Edwin Diaz will be back.
32:25That'll help the bullpen.
32:27I still believe in the offense.
32:29Mookie Betts has played in a handful of games this season.
32:32And Teoscar Hernandez does scare me a little bit, but it's officially something.
32:38And it's not like this is a great version of the San Francisco Giants.
32:42They have not performed well this year.
32:44The Giants are playing their best ball against the Dodgers.
32:48And this is, to me, the second-best rivalry in baseball.
32:52It's Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, Dodgers.
32:54I don't think there's any question about that.
32:56So, the way I see it, when you look at this, I am not going to sit here and go
33:01all chicken little sky has fallen.
33:03But it's something to monitor big picture for L.A.
33:07My take on the Dodgers having the greatest regular season ever, I'm out.
33:13It's not going to happen.
33:14Now, Dodgers are a second-place team in the NL West behind the Padres.
33:18I do think they can climb back into first.
33:21I still think they can win the National League and still think they can win the World Series.
33:24I do think, conversely, if you're a Braves fan, a Yankees fan, a Cubs fan,
33:29you're thinking this is the year to kind of pick off L.A.
33:33I'm not going to push the panic button yet.
33:37Shohei Otani did hit a home run last night.
33:40First time he's driven one out of the ball yard in the month of May.
33:44I'm not going to sit here and push the panic button.
33:47But we're certainly paying attention.
33:50But wait, there's more.
33:52In terms of LeBron, we probably haven't seen a player that has honored the game
33:58to the extent that he's honored the game.
34:01He's given so much to his teammates, to this organization.
34:06And the thing we want to do more than anything else is honor him back.
34:10And I think the first order of business there is allowing him to spend the time he needs
34:16to decide what his next step are.
34:18Does he want to play another year in the NBA?
34:21And that'll be, as he said to you guys last night, family time.
34:24I think time with his inner circle.
34:26And we just want to honor that for him.
34:28Of course, any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster.
34:34That's a blessing in itself, just with what he does.
34:38I thought Rob Palenka said a lot yesterday.
34:41And I think the back page of the California Post does, too.
34:44It can't be goodbye.
34:46And I think Palenka painted a wonderful picture there where he's going to give LeBron appropriately,
34:52so all the time he needs.
34:54But it won't be goodbye.
34:56I think that if you listen closely to Palenka's news conference exit interview news conference
35:02yesterday with Kobe Price and Melissa Rowland and the incredible press who covers the Lakers out in Los Angeles,
35:10and, of course, our rock stars for the California Post, I think they absolutely want LeBron back.
35:16I know they want LeBron back.
35:17They should want LeBron back.
35:19Lakers fans are all over the map on it.
35:21I don't understand it.
35:22LeBron has been phenomenal, great eight years in Los Angeles, and I don't see him leaving.
35:28I just, I don't.
35:30I think LeBron will play next year.
35:32I think LeBron will play for the Lakers.
35:34I don't see him going to the Cavs or the Clippers or the Knicks or the Warriors for a variety
35:39of reasons
35:40that we documented on yesterday's show.
35:42It's basketball.
35:43It's beyond.
35:44Bronny's there.
35:45His family's there.
35:46And LeBron played great this year as a role player, third-best player on the team during
35:52that hot streak in March.
35:54And then when Donchich and Reeves got hurt, he took over.
35:58He dominated.
35:58And I loved every single second of it.
36:00And if you're a Lakers fan, you should celebrate LeBron for the eight seasons, for what he did
36:05against Houston, for what he did at the age of 41 in season 23 against Oklahoma City.
36:11It's ridiculously impressive.
36:13It's ridiculously amazing.
36:15So, I truly think that when you listen to Palenka, LeBron's coming back.
36:21Reeves is coming back.
36:23They should absolutely give Reeves the bag.
36:25I think that running it back with Donchich, Reeves, and James is the right thing to do.
36:32We're on record saying that's, and I'm picking the Thunder to win the whole thing and have
36:37been all year.
36:38There was a moment in time in March where I thought the Lakers were the team that could
36:42beat them fully healthy.
36:44That's the team I want to see.
36:45And Palenka mentioned at his news conference that they want to improve defense and overall
36:51team depth, which kind of makes me think DeAndre Ayton's not going to be there.
36:54But that's what you do.
36:56Bring those guys back together.
36:58Pay Reeves.
37:00LeBron comes back for a year or two.
37:02And get the right depth and defense around them.
37:07And I know the West is loaded, right?
37:09But how are you going to be better if you're the Lakers than my plan?
37:13What Palenka's laying out?
37:15If I'm Austin Reeves, I'm not leaving.
37:17I'm not taking money and, you know, becoming the go-to guy on some nondescript team.
37:22I think Reeves is smart enough to know that if he's the number two, the wingman for Luka
37:27Doncic and LeBron loves Austin Reeves, I think that would be the best case scenario here for
37:33Reeves and for Luka and for LeBron and for L.A.
37:36And I just think that that back page for the California Post nailed it.
37:42Can't be goodbye.
37:44And I predict it won't be goodbye.
37:46This is perfection.
37:48I mean, we just watched James dominate in the postseason.
37:53It was his 23rd NBA season.
37:56I just, I can't see LeBron riding off into the sunset getting swept when he played that brilliantly.
38:01Plus, LeBron wants that retirement tour, whenever retirement is.
38:07So, it can't be.
38:08It won't be.
38:09And I think the goal is, and I think it's realistic, that you look at, remember, Luka
38:15Doncic is a megastar.
38:17He was in the conversation for MVP, top three, in my opinion, before he got hurt on Thursday,
38:23April 2nd.
38:23He was absolutely in the top three.
38:26So, I think when the first week in July is done, first wave of free agency, if Reeves
38:34and LeBron come back and they improve the depth in the defense, realistically, absolutely,
38:40we could be saying, yes, the L.A.
38:42Lakers have a golden opportunity here to beat Oklahoma City and win the Western Conference.
38:50To college hoops, where during the NCAA tournament, Rick Pitino gave us a little hint about what's
38:56to come with the Garden this season.
38:58I think there are a lot of great young coaches in the game that are going to take our place.
39:04Tremendous coaches.
39:05We saw a young man at Siena who almost beat Duke playing five players.
39:10I've never heard of that before.
39:11Playing five players.
39:13And just a tremendous coach doing that at Siena.
39:18I know I'm coaching that conference in the MAAC and tremendous job doing that.
39:23And maybe we'll see him at Syracuse.
39:26Oh, Rick Pitino nailed it.
39:30Unbelievable stuff.
39:32Yes.
39:33This is everything.
39:35As a Syracuse alum, a Syracuse fan, as someone who roots for St. John's to be great and relevant,
39:43what it means for college basketball in New York City, what it means for basketball fans
39:49all over the country, this is everything.
39:52And Syracuse, St. John's, don't play regularly anymore once Syracuse went to the ACC.
39:58This game should always be played.
40:01And look, I love the Dome.
40:03It should always be played at Madison Square Garden.
40:06Always.
40:07So many Syracuse alum, I'll be at this game.
40:10I'm going to circle it on my calendar.
40:13He nailed it on Jerry McNamara.
40:15Honestly, this is incredible.
40:17I'm so fired up.
40:18This is how college basketball and sports should be.
40:22Look, obviously, when Syracuse rightly, because they had to because of football,
40:27went to the ACC, I don't like it, but it was the right move, only move for my alma mater.
40:32You just didn't get Georgetown and St. John's and UConn anymore on a regular basis.
40:38This is everything.
40:39I don't want this to be a one-hit wonder.
40:41Every single year, I want Jerry McNamara in Syracuse playing Rick Pitino in St. John's,
40:47whether it's the Dome, Madison Square Garden.
40:49I prefer an MSG.
40:51I think that'll be great for Syracuse in terms of buzz and recruiting.
40:55This is everything rights with college basketball.
40:59That's the show.
41:00If you missed any portion of the show, just do what I do.
41:02Rewatch the show over and over again.
41:04Go to the New York Post Sports YouTube page, California Post Sports YouTube page.
