00:01:35I don't know if my lifespan loves them as much as I love them in the moment,

00:02:03That was a performance that, sadly, for Drake May
00:02:08and the New England Patriots,
00:02:10consistent with what we've seen from Drake May in big spots.
00:02:15And you look at May last night, that decision,
00:02:18when they're in field goal range,
00:02:20and he tries to throw that into the end zone,
00:02:24and Jobe makes that unbelievable interception.
00:02:27You heard Kevin Harlan with the call on Westwood 1,
00:02:29and that was great hands by Jobe,
00:02:31great footwork to get it in.
00:02:33I mean, that's amateur hour.
00:02:36Absolute amateur hour.
00:02:38Drake May was terrible.
00:02:40He had all offseason to prove
00:02:42that last year's playoffs was a fluke.
00:02:45Instead, he got outplayed by Drew Locke,
00:02:48who came in last night,
00:02:50and was okay in a tough spot
00:02:53going up against the New England Patriots
00:02:55and Mike Vrabel in that defense,
00:02:57and Sam Darnold gets hurt,
00:02:59and Locke on the fourth and one
00:03:01hits Jackson Smith and Jigba,
00:03:02and that was the biggest play on offense
00:03:05for either team and changed everything.
00:03:07But what May did last night was deplorable.
00:03:10That interception when they're in field goal range,
00:03:12opportunity to tie,
00:03:14I mean, it just can't happen.
00:03:15But I want to go back to when it's 10-0.
00:03:18The game's over.
00:03:19The juice and the buzz last night to start was amazing.

00:03:41and they have a first-time
00:03:43offensive coordinator calling the plays.

00:04:35But I really think that what we witnessed last night
00:04:40will prove to be the single worst game
00:04:45played by any quarterback in the NFL this year.

00:04:51The only way you could lose is to throw up on yourself.
00:04:54And I think that's an important part of this.

00:06:28I had my list of best quarterbacks in the NFL.

00:06:35And I put him number seven.

00:06:39Drake May was number two on my ballot for league MVP last year.
00:06:44He was phenomenal in terms of just domination.
00:06:48Especially when a man of the most.
00:06:49Athletic.
00:06:50Great accuracy.
00:06:51Arm strength.
00:06:52Last night was puke.
00:06:53Absolute puke.
00:06:54I mean it was.
00:06:55It was terrible.
00:06:57And now.
00:06:58Because the Patriots were the luckiest damn team in the history of the NFL last year.
00:07:02And I would have gone nuts if they found a way to win that game.
00:07:04And Sam Darnold gets hurt.
00:07:05And that's why it ultimately transpired.
00:07:07The fact that we're talking about Drake May now having a big game problem is a huge problem.

00:07:15Look at last year.
00:07:17Chargers.
00:07:18Texans.
00:07:19Broncos.
00:07:20Seahawks.
00:07:20Into last night against the Seahawks.
00:07:23Drake May's been terrible.
00:07:24So this is as bad as it gets.

00:07:29This is not an overreaction.
00:07:31I said on shine time the day the schedule came out that the Patriots would start the season 0-4.
00:07:39Are they beating the Pittsburgh Steelers?
00:07:41Are they beating the Jacksonville Jaguars?
00:07:42Beating the Buffalo Bills?
00:07:45Why would you pick them to win after what we saw last night?
00:07:48A mess.
00:07:50Absolute mess.
00:07:51Let's also make sure we give Seattle credits.
00:07:53Mike McDonald is an unbelievable head coach.
00:07:56I think that he is just superb in terms of in-game, getting his guys ready.
00:08:01His defense absolutely flew around.
00:08:04Just incredible when you take a look at it in terms of the way they were able to persevere.
00:08:09That building went from here at the top, raising a banner, to just feeling deflated when Sam Darnold got heard.
00:08:17And then absolutely exploding.
00:08:19So I give the Seattle Seahawks a lot of credit without question.
00:08:23But to me, this is always and only about Drake May.
00:08:26He was the single reason why the Patriots lost and the single reason why the Seattle Seahawks won.
00:08:33What a stunning turn of events.
00:08:35That game went from snooze fest, comatose, absolutely boring to watch because neither team could do a damn thing,
00:08:43to a phenomenal, zany, eye-popping, electric, improbable fourth quarter because Drake May kept throwing to the wrong team.
00:08:51Wow.
00:08:52Absolutely insane.
00:08:53If the result of the game wasn't bad enough, how about A.J. Brown?
00:08:58Reported this morning that the injury is a high ankle sprain.
00:09:04This is a huge deal for the New England Patriots.
00:09:08You look at A.J. Brown, and I don't want to hear that this is a positive because it wasn't
00:09:14a fracture.
00:09:15A.J. Brown is everything to this football team.
00:09:19A.J. Brown is terrific.
00:09:21A.J. Brown is tremendous.
00:09:22A.J. Brown getting Kim in the offseason.
00:09:25That changed what you thought the offense was going to look like.
00:09:29And we saw Romeo Dobbs on the zeroes last night.
00:09:32A.J. Brown missing those aforementioned games will be an absolute killer here for the New England Patriots.
00:09:40So, high ankle sprain.
00:09:42Look, we can reference two weeks, four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks.
00:09:49Some players, it takes longer than that.
00:09:51You know, there's a variety of time frames, if you will, in terms of when a player comes back.
00:09:56I think that, you know, pain tolerance is going to be a big thing for A.J. Brown, but this
00:10:02is no good, as dreadful as it gets.
00:10:05And look, Brown got hurt, and then May completely fell apart.
00:10:08I blame Drake May, but I don't think there was any surprise or coincidence that that turned out to be
00:10:14the turning point of the game.
00:10:15So, that is about as brutal as it gets.
00:10:18I mean, it adds injury to insult here, if you're a fan of the New England Patriots.
00:10:24As for the injury to Sam Darnold and his status going forward, here's what Seahawks coach Mike McDonald had to
00:10:30say after the game.
00:10:31And with Sam, we got some great news back.
00:10:33It's to say it's good news right now.
00:10:36So, it's, I know, still just, you know, our thoughts and prayers with Sam.
00:10:40We love him.
00:10:41At this point, we were able to rule out a fracture.
00:10:45So, there's some more tests to be done.
00:10:47And so, that's what I'm saying when it's positive.
00:10:50So, but I know it's, we're still working through all that.
00:10:54But right now, I think fracture's out, which is great news.
00:10:57Now, it was reported this afternoon from our good friend, the great Adam Schefter,
00:11:01that Darnold is going to miss the Seahawks' Week 2 game at Arizona.
00:11:06And by the way, the game last night is on a Wednesday.
00:11:08So, now they get some time off, and that's great.
00:11:12And, you know, that's under the umbrella of it is what it is.
00:11:16I mean, Drew Locke can, in fact, beat the Arizona Cardinals.
00:11:20So, I'm not too worried about that.
00:11:23But this broke my heart.
00:11:25Five snaps played for Sam Darnold in that football game last night.
00:11:30Because I love Sam Darnold, and I loved him at USC, and I felt terrible for him that he got
00:11:35jetsed by Adam Gase and company
00:11:38and everything that transpired there.
00:11:39Then, you know, got that Ph.D. in QB play when, you know, he's with San Francisco and Kyle Shanahan
00:11:45for a year
00:11:46and then goes to Minnesota, and he's phenomenal.
00:11:49And they foolishly let him go and won a Super Bowl last year.
00:11:51There were no more questions about Sam Darnold.
00:11:53Everything I said about Sam Darnold forever was absolutely spot-on in terms of how he was going to be
00:11:58able to navigate.
00:12:00So, I felt terrible when you saw this injury, and when he was out, you knew it was bad.
00:12:05Now, if it's just—and look at the Seahawks' schedule here.
00:12:08If it's just Week 2, maybe Week 3, we could have a conversation about it.
00:12:15I think Washington's going to be dreadful.
00:12:17I think the Seahawks' defense going up against Washington's offensive line.
00:12:21I think if Drew Locke has to play in that game, Seattle could still go coast-to-coast and win
00:12:28that game.
00:12:28Now, you can't necessarily beat—and that team, the Seahawks, are unbelievable and they're well-coached.
00:12:35You can't beat the Chargers, the 49ers, the Broncos.
00:12:39You can't beat the Chiefs.
00:12:41You can't beat the Bears with Drew Locke on their center.
00:12:44Just not how it works.
00:12:45So, I am going to take this as good news when it comes to Sam Darnold.
00:12:51We'll see what happens when they really dive deep into the MRI and the pain tolerance.
00:12:57I would assume, just based on math, time, the schedule, what's been reported, what McDonald said,
00:13:07I don't think Sam's going to play the rest of September.
00:13:09I think they hold him out at least for the Arizona game and the Washington game.
00:13:16They're going to need him for that stretch.
00:13:18And you know what?
00:13:19At that stage, Sam, I am you freaks.
00:13:21Sam Darnold will be back and better than ever.
00:13:23Give Drew Locke credit.
00:13:24That was a rough circumstance.
00:13:25Had that mind-numbing delay at game at the end last night.
00:13:28I'm happy for Drew Locke.

00:13:33I'm happy for Seattle.
00:13:35You're not going to have too many moments of post-game happiness if Drew Locke is under center for the

00:16:00And what's crazy, and this is a factor here, and it's going to be a talking point,
00:16:05because if the Rams start slow, it's going to be like, oh, why didn't you leave earlier?
00:16:09If the Rams start fast, it's going to be like, oh, air sports science is better.
00:16:13And what were the 49ers doing?
00:16:15Were they too busy doing all the pomp and circumstance and, you know, promoting the NFL and Melbourne?
00:16:21This is going to be a topic for conversation.
00:16:24Listen, what I would have done, what the Niners did.
00:16:27I would have gotten there early.
00:16:29I would have gotten adjusted.
00:16:30That's how I would choose to rock and roll.
00:16:33It goes noted how the Rams decided, and their organization is the best in professional sports.

00:16:45and we're not worried about any kind of time change.
00:16:48We're going to stay on West Coast time.
00:16:51L.A. time, and I absolutely appreciate where they're coming from there,
00:16:55but this is going to be a talking point, and how they start is going to be a thing.
00:16:59Now, with that said, I am so excited for this game.
00:17:03These organizations hate each other, big-time rivals.
00:17:07The fans despise each other.
00:17:09You had the Rams team president, Kevin Demoff, taking a Twitter, ripping everybody on social media.
00:17:15I think Sean McVeigh is a gem.
00:17:19I think Sean McVeigh behind Andy Reid is the second-best coach in the NFL.
00:17:23I think when you look at the reasons why the Rams can and will live up to expectations,
00:17:29and the galaxy of stars on this team, it's all going to come together,
00:17:33and why I think they're going to the Super Bowl this year, winning 14 games, winning tonight,
00:17:38it's because of McVeigh.
00:17:40Not only are his X's and O's amazing when it comes to Matthew Stafford and Puka Nakua
00:17:45and Devontae Adams and Blake Corum and Kyron Williams
00:17:48and all the tight ends that he's obsessed with.
00:17:51I talked to McVeigh about that on my SiriusXM radio show.
00:17:54It's the ability for him to make sure that everyone stays locked and stays focused
00:18:01and has the ability to, as cliche as it sounds, take it one game at a time.
00:18:06Because the Rams, to the point in how we started this segment with Les Snead on Shine Time,
00:18:11the Rams are the monster heavy Super Bowl favorites.
00:18:14It's not even close.
00:18:15Plus 500.
00:18:16They are the heavy favorites to win a championship.
00:18:19And I think so much of that is what Les Snead did in the offseason.
00:18:23Look, we said on Shine Time, forget Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald for a second,
00:18:28after the Trent McDuffie deal that they would win the Super Bowl, go to the Super Bowl,

00:18:39Miles Garrett is going to have the best year of his career.

00:19:48I mean, if it wasn't for bad luck, no luck at all.
00:19:50I mean, he, in practice, he tore his pectoral muscle,
00:19:55and he's done for the year.
00:19:56I mean, if it wasn't for bad news and bad luck,
00:19:59Kyle Shanahan's team wouldn't have any at all.
00:20:01Now Shanahan is a phenomenal coach
00:20:04and always maximizes talent.
00:20:05And Kyle Shanahan will have his team ready to go.
00:20:09And Shanahan and McVay, they are frenemies.
00:20:12They were best friends, still love and respect each other.
00:20:15Obviously, they can't be besties anymore
00:20:17because they coach against each other.
00:20:19And obviously, they've had wars and battles,
00:20:22and they're very similar in how they go about their business.
00:20:25And Kyle's fantastic.
00:20:27Kyle usually beats Sean in big spots
00:20:30and usually beats him in the regular season.
00:20:32So I think Shanahan's going to have his team ready to go tonight.
00:20:35I also think, you know, in terms of all the bad news
00:20:39and Jed York and Shanahan's accident

00:20:42and the Brandon Ayuk drama and nonsense and situation,
00:20:45and we mentioned, you know, Collins,

00:22:20about McVay and Matthew Stafford,
00:22:21and that's a little game within the game storyline
00:22:24that kind of gets me going tonight.

00:28:21Okay?
00:28:22So we can make it great and have a great press conference, or we can make it uncomfortable.
00:28:27But I'm not going to tell you because when you know, the Cowboys know.
00:28:31Or every other team we play knows.
00:28:32And that's not in the competitive interest of our football team.

00:28:36So I think you can respect that.

00:29:05and now everybody knows, including the Cowboys fans.
00:29:08So, we can do this the easy way or the hard way.
00:29:11It's your choice.
00:29:12I was surprised, to be honest with you, that Harbaugh decided to play that card yesterday
00:29:17because, honestly, at the end of the day, I think he's been around the block and he knows the deal.
00:29:22And why do that before week one of the season?
00:29:26How would you characterize and describe the mood in that press room?
00:29:31Well, I think it was a little bit of a feeling out process.
00:29:34Don't forget, this was, you know, we've been around John Harbaugh in the spring, in the summer training camp,
00:29:40West Virginia, New Jersey.
00:29:41But this was the first day of the season, really, right?
00:29:45That's the first Wednesday of the first week leading into the first game.
00:29:49So, that's like where it all hits the fan.
00:29:51Now, for context, he was kind of, he started marinating when he was asked a couple of questions about Darius
00:29:58Slayton,
00:29:59that he didn't like the tone of the questions.
00:30:01So, that got him a little frisky.
00:30:03But then he was asked about Malik Nabors once, twice, three times.
00:30:08Look, he's been around the block.
00:30:10You get asked questions about players, key players and injuries all the time.
00:30:14And then I started asking him a question.
00:30:17My question was going to be, Adam, you mentioned that Malik Nabors, Malik practiced fully.
00:30:22What can a coach do in practice to get a guy ready to play by maybe being a little more
00:30:28physical with him in practice?
00:30:30I've heard of coaches in practice, they kind of get pads or they do things, they tell the teammates,
00:30:36kind of rough them up a little bit without hurting them to get them ready for a game if he's
00:30:40been out for a while.
00:30:41John Harbaugh interrupted me and didn't let me get that question in.
00:30:45And then he started with, you know, we're not going to do this, injuries, I'm not going to tell you.
00:30:50And then after he cooled down, the next question, I just asked my question and he answered it.
00:30:54But I think it was kind of a little bit of a territorial thing with John Harbaugh.
00:30:58Like this is the first one of this year of the real season.
00:31:02And let's kind of get our parameters straight about how he wants it done.
00:31:06Makes sense.
00:31:07Now I'm curious based upon your information and the people you talk to.
00:31:12And also, Paul, your feel, which I think matters here because you've been covering the team all preseason long, all
00:31:18training camp long, obviously.
00:31:20Do you expect Malik Nabors to play Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys?
00:31:25Short answer, yes.
00:31:28Almost absolutely.
00:31:29But yes, I think he's going to play.
00:31:31Look, if you're paying attention, you have, you've seen what happened in the spring and the summer and the slow
00:31:37ramp up and a little bit more, a little bit more, a little bit more.
00:31:40As far as I can tell, he's had no setbacks.
00:31:43He looks good running and cutting.
00:31:45He has not played in a game.
00:31:46I get it.
00:31:47So they want to take him to the parking lot and have guys tackle him.
00:31:50They can do that.
00:31:51But he has to run routes.
00:31:53He has to catch the ball and he has to go down when he's hit.
00:31:56Is he going to play 75 snaps?
00:31:58No, he's not.
00:31:59Will he be on a pitch count?
00:32:00I would say he will be.
00:32:02But this is not a left tackle who either you play or you don't play.
00:32:06Really?
00:32:06He's a receiver.
00:32:07They can have packages for him and he can be subbed in and off the field.
00:32:11Now, Malik neighbors has said, I am not going to put myself on the field until I feel I'm a
00:32:17hundred percent.
00:32:18Is there something in him in the back of his mind that says, you know what?
00:32:21I'm not a hundred percent yet.
00:32:23So I don't want to go out there.
00:32:25I'll give that a slight chance, but I think he wants to play.
00:32:29I know he wants to play.
00:32:31And if they say you're going to play 25 snaps, I don't think he's going to turn around and say,
00:32:36well, if I can't play the whole game, I'm not playing.
00:32:39He can help the Giants in 25 snaps.
00:32:41I think he's playing.
00:32:42Paul, you reported this week on Jackson Dart's text message to his offensive line that said,
00:32:47I want to be the best quarterback in the world.
00:32:51What do you think we should expect year two from Jackson Dart?
00:32:56Better than year one, right?
00:32:58That's that's the quarterback ascension.
00:33:00I'm not expecting him to be the top five quarterback in the league better than year one.
00:33:06And year one was pretty good.
00:33:07Year one was pretty good.
00:33:09You know, his metrics were good.
00:33:10His numbers were good.
00:33:12They should have won.
00:33:13He was four and eight as a starter.
00:33:14They should have won at least two more games.
00:33:16You know, he could have been around 500.
00:33:20Now, now we have to remember the caveat here is what is the best thing for a young quarterback continuity?
00:33:25Same head coach, same playbook, same offensive coordinator, same play caller.
00:33:31He has none of that, right?
00:33:33Remember what John Maris said famously about Daniel Jones.
00:33:36We did everything possible to screw this kid up by constant change around him.
00:33:42So what happens in year two?
00:33:44Everything's changed.
00:33:45Maybe it's for the better, but it is change.
00:33:47And so do I expect him to hit the ground running and score 35 points Sunday night?
00:33:52I do not, but I expect better in every way, shape or form.
00:33:57He'll have Malik neighbors.
00:33:59He had Malik neighbors for one half of one game last year.
00:34:03He'll have a good offensive line.
00:34:05Maybe a really good offensive line, the same four starters.
00:34:08And oh, by the way, the 10th pick in the draft, CeCe Mauanoa.
00:34:12So that should be solid.
00:34:13Hopefully he'll have Cam Scadaboo for more than half the season.
00:34:16He'll have Isaiah Likely, who's the best tight end he will have had between this year and last year.
00:34:23I expect him to be better and be a quarterback who can win more games than he loses.
00:34:28The Giants have lost, Paul, 16 of the last 18 against Dallas.
00:34:33So if I'm a Giants fan watching this, why would I believe that the matchup Sunday night will be different?
00:34:41Maybe you won't.
00:34:44Fair enough.
00:34:46I don't know.
00:34:47Now, look, last year they beat the Cowboys, right?
00:34:49Dak's 14 game winning streak.
00:34:50You know, that winning streak against the Giants is second in NFL history.
00:34:55Bob Greasy, who I know you remember, beat the Bills 17 times in a row.
00:35:00That's the record.
00:35:01Tom Brady beat the Bills 13 times in a row.
00:35:04Steve Young beat the 49ers 13 times in a row.
00:35:07So Dak, 14 over the Giants, was second most ever for one player over one opponent.
00:35:14It was rough.
00:35:15But they beat him last year, but it's an asterisk, right?
00:35:18That's what I wrote in the New York Post.
00:35:20You know, it was, he had, you know, he only played a half.
00:35:23The Cowboys were not playing pedal for the medal in that one.
00:35:27So, but, you know, a Giants fan, first of all, you're home.
00:35:30It's a season opener.
00:35:32Your team is remarkably healthy.
00:35:34You have John Halbaugh as the head coach.
00:35:36You should not be out coached in the game.
00:35:39You know, I don't think any Giants fans should go into that game and saying we can't win.
00:35:43And I think a lot of them are going to show up and thinking we are going to win.
00:35:47All right.
00:35:47With that as a backdrop.
00:35:48And for the record, I think the Cowboys are going to be great this year.
00:35:52I think the Giants are going to be really good this year.
00:35:55Give us your prediction on the record.
00:35:57Who wins?
00:35:58What's the score?
00:35:59And what's the headline Monday's post if the Giants can pull this off?
00:36:05First of all, I picked the Cowboys to be in the Super Bowl.
00:36:08So, I mean, we're on the same page and I picked the Giants to be nine and eight.
00:36:11Now, they won seven games total last two years.
00:36:15Nine and eight is a major upgrade.
00:36:16And that means they're in some sort of contention in by, you know, Halloween and by Thanksgiving
00:36:23and maybe even Christmas and New Year's.
00:36:25And that will be a whole heck of a lot better than it has been.
00:36:28I think the headline Monday is going to be not quite there yet.
00:36:34That the Cowboys are really good.
00:36:36And they came in and took care of business against the Giants on Sunday night football.
00:36:40I don't think it's going to be an embarrassment.
00:36:42But I think, I mean, I'm not picking the Giants to win the game.
00:36:45I'll be surprised if they win.
00:36:47Not shocked.
00:36:48I think this game is, you know, I mean, I mean, the easy feeling from the outside is
00:36:54the Cowboys always beat the Giants, you know, especially in prime time.
00:36:57So they're going to beat them again.
00:36:58I don't think there's a lot of high regard for the Giants, you know, around the league
00:37:02in media and in fandom and things like that.
00:37:05But I can see the Giants winning, but I'm not sure if their offense is quite ready to score
00:37:09a lot of points yet.
00:37:10And until they are really good at stopping the run, the Giants, I'm going to believe
00:37:15that maybe they aren't.
00:37:16So I think the headline will be frustrating.
00:37:20Start with some good signs for John Harbaugh.
00:37:22And oh, by the way, now we have a long weekend and a Monday night game against the Rams in
00:37:27L.A.
00:37:29So 0-2 could be coming, you know, fast and furious.

00:38:39I mean, you know that superstar stat.
00:38:41I don't need to tell you that, Mr. Shine, but thank you for having me.
00:38:44Listen, I always love chopping it up with you, and I always love watching you.
00:38:48And honestly, you know what I think about the U.S. Open and what I think of just incredible
00:38:54tennis, and I need to talk to you about Ben Shelton.
00:38:58What impressed you the most about his epic five-set win over Carlos Alcaraz in the quarters?
00:39:03Well, you know, someone else said to me in another interview I did today, Adam, that he
00:39:09competed well, that I'd never seen him compete that well.
00:39:12And I said, no, hold on a second.
00:39:13He's always been a great competitor.
00:39:15But what he did and what he's done, Adam, in the last year or so is he's improved his
00:39:21tennis game.
00:39:22He's improved his all-around skill set.
00:39:25He's going up against this guy, Alcaraz, who's a human highlight reel, okay?
00:39:29This guy's the most electric player I've ever seen on a tennis court.
00:39:33And I've seen quite a few other electric players, and you know them well by name.
00:39:38So what Ben Shelton has done is he's improved his versatility.
00:39:40You know he's got the monster serve, he can serve at high 140s, but he's like a pitcher
00:39:46that's got the unbelievable fastball, and now he's got a nasty curve, and he's got a changeup,
00:39:52and he's got a splitter, and most importantly, Adam, he's improved his return of serve.
00:39:57So he's getting more balls in play.
00:39:59He's staying in points better by using the backhand slice.
00:40:02He's become more of an all-court player, an all-around player.
00:40:06That's why he was able to stay with Alcaraz, who, albeit I'll say it, wasn't at his best
00:40:11because it was very impressive to me that Alcaraz even got to the US Open, having not played
00:40:16for almost five months, and played as well as he did.
00:40:20But I said at the beginning of the tournament that I thought that he would have a match where
00:40:24he struggled, where he wasn't at his best.
00:40:26And that's what happened.
00:40:27And Ben Shelton was able to take advantage of it, still going the distance, going five sets.
00:40:33I was really impressed after he lost that first set in a tiebreak that, you know, that
00:40:38he could have just had a letdown.
00:40:40But he hung in there.
00:40:41He knew he was going to have to stay and play a long, tough, grueling match.
00:40:45And that's exactly what he did to get the W.
00:40:47But it's not done, Adam.
00:40:48You know, I picked him to win the tournament before it started.
00:40:52Okay, because of the things I just discussed with you.
00:40:55But now he's got Francis Tiafa, who I love.
00:40:57He lights up the stadium.
00:40:59I love his smile.
00:41:00I love his attitude.
00:41:01He's back into the semifinals at the Open for the third time.
00:41:05So, you know, he's got a shot, Tiafa, to win that match.
00:41:08But I'm leaning towards Shelton in that one.
00:41:10And Sasha Zverev is going to be the favorite, no matter who he plays in the championship match,
00:41:16assuming he beats Hachinov in the first semifinal, which I believe he will.
00:41:20But Ben Shelton loves that stage.
00:41:22He loves the big stage.
00:41:24And I think he's ready for his big moment.
00:41:25I want to get your thoughts on what everyone was buzzing about the other day in terms of when the
00:41:32match ended.
00:41:33And let me give you my take.
00:41:35And I know you were listening to my show on Mad Dog Sports Radio.
00:41:38Look, I thought it was part of the lore of it, right?
00:41:42You know, we see this in the NCAA tournaments.
00:41:44We see this in the NBA in the postseason.
00:41:48It also wasn't, in my opinion, ESPN's fault or the USTA's fault or the US Open's fault.
00:41:54The Tiafa match was epic.
00:41:56And once that happened, you knew everything was going to get pushed back.
00:42:00So, it was just under the umbrella of it was what it was.
00:42:04And it's one of those where if it ends at 3.30 in the morning, it makes an epic sporting
00:42:10event that much better.
00:42:13What's your take on all that?
00:42:15I 100% agree with you.
00:42:17And I'll give you another little tidbit for you to nibble on, okay?
00:42:22Tennis is never going to be a hugely rated sport on television in the United States.
00:42:28It's just not.
00:42:29Even the years when I was with ESPN.
00:42:32I've been with ESPN for 30 years.
00:42:33When I covered the US Open for CBS.
00:42:36You know, when it was Sampras-Agassi.
00:42:38When it was Federer against Djokovic.
00:42:40Nadal-Federer.
00:42:41You know, those big time matchups.
00:42:43I mean, it rates pretty well.
00:42:45But you're talking about the highest rated tennis match in the last 20 years is like the worst NFL game
00:42:52on Sunday.
00:42:53Like the game that you don't want to watch on Sunday.
00:42:55You know, that rates higher than the greatest tennis rating ever.
00:42:59So my point is this.
00:43:00Tennis makes its money and makes its buzz on ticket sales, sponsorship.
00:43:06Yes, hospitality more and more.
00:43:09You know, corporate corporations getting involved in sponsoring the tournament.
00:43:16And what you just said is true.
00:43:19The lore of like the average talk show.
00:43:22I don't consider you the average because you like tennis, right?
00:43:24But most guys in your business don't talk tennis.
00:43:27Sure.
00:43:27Nothing about it.
00:43:28And they're only talking about tennis because of that.
00:43:30If that match had been in prime time.
00:43:32Oh, yeah.
00:43:33More people would have seen it.
00:43:34But not that much more than it would really move the needle for tennis in the way that I think
00:43:40this did.
00:43:40So I agree.
00:43:41The word you use lore is part of what makes tennis interesting to the casual fam.
00:43:46And the fact that people are up there, you know, I saw this morning on my social media, you know,
00:43:52a video of people waiting for the subway, the seven train at 415 AM.
00:43:56Yeah.
00:43:57To get back to the city.
00:43:58And so I think that that makes it all the more interesting.
00:44:02And I think it raises awareness for the sport beyond if that match had been played in prime time.
00:44:08Like now people are more talking about it.
00:44:10And by the way, Tiafoe and Shelton will be played in prime time tomorrow night on ESPN.
00:44:16And that's going to do a pretty darn good number.
00:44:19But a pretty darn good number for tennis.
00:44:22I think you nailed it.
00:44:23And to me, it just added to the whole thing.
00:44:25And the way Tiafoe won, I mean, that that comeback and, you know, everything about it and the volleys and
00:44:32the rallies and the end was just incredible.
00:44:35And honestly, Patrick, you know, Shelton Tiafoe semis tomorrow night.
00:44:39You've mentioned it a couple of times.
00:44:40I am so into this.
00:44:43Like, I think this is going to be just a sensational sporting event.

00:44:55I mean, you know, he won the French, finally got the monkey off his back, played great at Wimbledon.
00:44:59He never done well at Wimbledon.
00:45:01He got to the final there.
00:45:02So I love his chances.
00:45:03Hatchitoff is a power player, hits the ball big.
00:45:06But I think Zrarov has got too much versatility.
00:45:09But I think it'll be closer than people think.
00:45:11Probably a four setter.
00:45:13Shelton Tiafoe.
00:45:14Let's set this up.
00:45:15They know each other.
00:45:16Well, they're good buddies, but they're competitors.
00:45:18They're rivals because Shelton's like the new kid on the block.
00:45:21This is for the American guys.
00:45:23You know, you have Tiafoe.
00:45:24You have Taylor Fritz.
00:45:25You had Tommy Paul.
00:45:26And I've been around those guys a lot.
00:45:28I knew them when they were kids.
00:45:30I've been around them at labor cup on the same.
00:45:32They're on the same team together.
00:45:34There's a healthy competition, Adam, between these two.
00:45:38Very healthy.
00:45:39Like they're going to go at it.
00:45:40They respect each other, but they want to be the big guy on the block big time.
00:45:44They both want to be the guy, the guy that can finally break through and win a major.
00:45:49I believe Shelton's got a little bit more.
00:45:51Well, he's got a lot more firepower.
00:45:53That's for sure in his game, but he's added a little more variety to his game.
00:45:57He's added the ability, you know, to play the slice.
00:46:00He's added the ability to play a lot more defense.
00:46:04Tiafoe is a little bit more straightforward.
00:46:06And he, he got the memo last year around this time.
00:46:09Did Tiafoe.
00:46:10You better buckle up as you like to say, buckle up buttercup on, on, on, on, on your
00:46:16fitness and on your commitment to being the best you can be.
00:46:19He got rid of his whole team.
00:46:21He brought in a new team.
00:46:22He's had some brutal losses this year.
00:46:25Had a huge lead at the French open that he let slip away when he had a monster
00:46:29opportunity to get to the semis on the clay at Roland Garros.
00:46:33But he's bounced back every time.
00:46:35And I love what I'm seeing from him coming from two sets down.
00:46:39He's putting it all out there.
00:46:40And so I think he will have plenty in the tank to win this match.
00:46:44But I think Shelton's just got TMG, Adam.
00:46:47Too much game.
00:46:48I think Shelton wins it in four.
00:46:51Listen, I think it'd be incredible.
00:46:53And by the way, we had Aaron Rodgers on our Sirius XM radio show,
00:46:56and he picked Shelton to win the entire thing at the U.S. Open.
00:47:00So I was like, all right, that's pretty good.
00:47:01Rodgers, he's very into tennis, into the U.S. Open.
00:47:04I know he's your guy.
00:47:05I know he's your guy.
00:47:06He's my guy.

00:47:09Now, obviously, the favorites, and she's destroying everyone.
00:47:13You know, we have Pagula.
00:47:15We have Coco.
00:47:16Americans certainly could eventually emerge.
00:47:19Who are we picking on the women's side and why?
00:47:21Well, let me just slightly correct you and tell you that Sabalenka was down a break
00:47:26in the third in the last match against Linda Nascava, who won Wimbledon.
00:47:30It was an amazing match.
00:47:31Super high level.
00:47:32So she hasn't just totally been steamrolling, which she's done in the past.
00:47:36Now, she's won the last two U.S. Opens.
00:47:38She's going for the three-peat, okay?
00:47:40What's the last player to do that was Serena on the women's side.
00:47:43Federer on the men's side, the last guy who won five in a row.
00:47:46But Sabalenka's playing well.
00:47:49She's not my pick just for some reason, and I'll get to that in a second.
00:47:54But I think she will beat Pagula.
00:47:56My heart would love to see, you know, the Buffalo Bills gal, Bills Nation,
00:48:01because I'm picking the Bills to go all the way.
00:48:04Same.
00:48:05Yeah.
00:48:05Over the Rams in the Super Bowl.
00:48:07Same.
00:48:08Yeah.
00:48:08But it's 9-4 head-to-head.
00:48:10Sabalenka leads.
00:48:11Pagula's beaten her a few times.
00:48:13And why do I like Pagula?
00:48:15Because she's no nonsense, you know.
00:48:17She comes from huge wealth.
00:48:18And what has she done?
00:48:19It took her until her mid-20s just to start getting into majors,
00:48:23to be a top player.
00:48:24And now she's rock solid.
00:48:26She's got the most wins of anyone on tour.
00:48:28She kind of deserves to win a major.
00:48:30But, you know, deserves and winning are two different things.
00:48:33I got Sabalenka winning this one in a tight three-setter.
00:48:36But I'd love to see Jessica get through and get to the final one more time,
00:48:39which she did two years ago, losing to Sabalenka.
00:48:43On the other side, you've got Coco Goff, who's just been finding ways to win,
00:48:48and particularly the last match.
00:48:49As I called it yesterday against Navarro.
00:48:51I mean, against Andrejeva.
00:48:53She did not look good in the first set.
00:48:55I mean, she was so tight, Adam.
00:48:57She couldn't swing the racket.
00:48:59I mean, the first set was a disaster.
00:49:00Yeah.
00:49:01But here's what Coco does as well as anyone.
00:49:04She competes her ass off.
00:49:06She's an unbelievable competitor.
00:49:08Even when, you know, she can't find the broad side of a barn with her serve and her forehand.
00:49:13She battles.
00:49:14She's a battler.
00:49:15And she loves the crowd.
00:49:16The crowd loves her.
00:49:17I think she's going to win this.
00:49:19I think she's going to win the whole thing.
00:49:20But I'll tell you this right now.
00:49:22If Rabakina comes out and plays her A game, she could steamroll Coco.
00:49:27Because she's the best ball striker in women's tennis.
00:49:29She has never played her best at the U.S. Open.
00:49:32She's played great in Australia.
00:49:33She won the Australian this year.
00:49:35But you see Coco, you know, go into the year.
00:49:37She's going to need the crowd.
00:49:38And she's going to need a much better start.
00:49:40So she better bring it early.
00:49:42Because Rabakina has got the type of game that could blow her away.
00:49:45You know, she could win it two and two if she's hot.
00:49:47And if Coco plays the way she did in the previous round.
00:49:50But I think Coco finds a way and gets back to the winner's circle.

00:50:13Andy Roddick won the U.S. Open.
00:50:15Please, please let me not hear that question.
00:50:18There's two questions I get, you know, Adam, all the time.
00:50:21What's it like being John's brother, number one?
00:50:23Well, I ain't going to get rid of that because that's going to happen for the rest of my life.
00:50:27I'm cool.
00:50:27I've come to peace with that.
00:50:29I'm good with that.
00:50:30But this one, please, Ben Shelton, even if Francis would win it, I'd be super pumped.
00:50:34But I think Ben Shelton's the guy to get it done.
00:50:36But let me tell you one more thing.
00:50:38If it's Zverev in the final against either one of the two Americans, Zverev's going to be the final.
00:50:44He's going to be the favorite in the match by the odds makers.
00:50:47So let me follow on that.
00:50:49Seriously.
00:50:49So we can avoid that question.
00:50:50We know you're John's brother, but just so we can avoid, let's say Shelton wins.
00:50:55What would that do for A, tennis, B, United States tennis?
00:51:02Well, it'd be massive for more for U.S. tennis than for tennis, because for tennis globally,
00:51:07it's, you know, it's never been more popular than majors or huge.
00:51:11Europeans essentially dominate, you know, definitely men's tennis at the highest level.
00:51:15Just look at who's won majors in the last, you know, 25 years.
00:51:19Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina, the last guy non-European to win a major.
00:51:24So tennis will be fine.
00:51:26But, you know, look, even the other majors, you know, you have a bankable American star.
00:51:31And what does that mean?
00:51:32Bankable American star means you got to win a major.
00:51:34I mean, that's just the bottom line.
00:51:35That's just how it is in tennis.
00:51:37So it would make a massive difference.
00:51:39But in the United States, Adam, it would be absolutely huge for for all of us.
00:51:46You know, for me and my brother run our tennis academy, the Johnny Mac Tennis Academy in New York, you
00:51:51know, for the buzz of the kids to say, you know what?
00:51:53We can actually get it done.
00:51:55We meaning as a country, because we've been passed by.
00:51:58We were passed by by the European countries in the last 25 years at the highest levels of pro tennis.
00:52:04We still have we've had a lot of really, really good players.
00:52:07But we need someone that's a phenomenal athlete playing the game of tennis.
00:52:11Right. That's what it takes.
00:52:12And Ben Shelton is that guy.
00:52:14He was a great quarterback as a kid.
00:52:16You know, finally at 12, 13, he said, OK, we've got to pick a sport.
00:52:19He went to tennis.
00:52:20So we preach that at our tennis academy.
00:52:22We want to see kids doing other sports.
00:52:24We want to get great athletes playing tennis, because that's the only way now, Adam, that you can hold up
00:52:30one of those trophies at the four majors.
00:52:32You've got to be a great tennis player.
00:52:33That's obvious.
00:52:35But you also now have to be a phenomenal athlete.
00:52:37The speed of the game, the athleticism of the game.
00:52:40I mean, Carlos Alcaraz, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic.
00:52:44These guys are like, they're not just great tennis players.
00:52:47They're elite athletes.
00:52:48Yeah.
00:52:48And that's what we need.
00:52:49And that would raise the bar for all of us to sort of in the tennis business to get attract
00:52:54more kids that are phenomenal athletes playing our game.
00:52:57Well, with that said, last one for you.
00:52:59And I want to get your take on this because, you know, in some circles, it's a quote unquote controversy
00:53:04in terms of influencers and camera lights and fans making noise and different smells of smoke during the U.S.
00:53:14Open.
00:53:14Now, I think anything that increases buzz and attention for tennis, especially in New York for the U.S. Open,
00:53:22I can allow it, right?
00:53:24Maybe different for Wimbledon.
00:53:25But U.S. Open, it's New York.
00:53:27I think it's all part of the deal.
00:53:28I also think if it attracts a younger audience, a more casual audience, I think that's great because maybe you'll
00:53:36fall in love with the game or certain players or whatever it is.
00:53:39What's your take on all that?
00:53:41So you don't have anything against a little buzz.
00:53:44Is that what you're saying?
00:53:45Those smells going on at the Arthur Ashe State?
00:53:48I'm with you.
00:53:49I'm with you on all fronts, Adam.
00:53:51I find it absolutely hilarious.
00:53:54Okay.
00:53:55I've been going to the U.S. Open since I was a little kid.
00:53:58Okay.
00:53:58Since it was played at Westside Tennis Club at Forest Hills.
00:54:01And all we've ever wanted in tennis is to be like big time, you know, like a big time sport,
00:54:08like football, like basketball, like baseball.
00:54:11You know, I grew up going all those games.
00:54:13I grew up going and getting on the train, going to the Knicks game and the Rangers game.
00:54:17We grew up like, hey, we want tennis to be cool.
00:54:20We want tennis to be happening.
00:54:21And now, guess what's happening at this year's U.S. Open, Adam?
00:54:24Just like you said, that's what's happening.
00:54:26Yeah.
00:54:26It's got a lot of buzz.
00:54:28It's got influencers, whatever you want to call them.
00:54:30I think it's fantastic.
00:54:31And I think it's an absolute joke that people are complaining about it, that tennis is now bigger beyond us
00:54:38tennis geeks.
00:54:39And even you and even our buddy, the Christopher Mad Dog Russo, you're like the two only big time radio
00:54:44guys that actually talk tennis and get it, understand it.
00:54:48So I'm super happy talking to these imbeciles who have no idea about tennis because now it's got some buzz.
00:54:55So I say, you know, we could go after the USTA who runs the U.S. Open for a bunch
00:54:59of stuff, but I'm not going after them for this because they've made tennis more and more relevant.
00:55:04They've made the event bigger and better.
00:55:08And for the tennis geeks like me, I'm like blown away, man, watching these people get into tennis because I'm
00:55:14like, what took you so long?

00:56:06And I think with Shohei, it's more of let's take the 15 days and get them reset, get them feeling
00:56:16better and know that we still have a week of baseball games, you know.
00:56:22And left and then build them back up all the while during this 15 day stint to get the best
00:56:29of him for the postseason.
00:56:33Now, of course, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explaining the decision to play Shohei Otani on the 15 day IL as
00:56:39he deals with left knee and rights biceps injuries.
00:56:44Now, we already know he's not expected to pitch for the remainder of the season.
00:56:47So, how concerned am I about the Dodgers?
00:56:51Well, listen, I think when you have to place Otani on the injured list in the middle of September, that's
00:57:01worrisome.
00:57:03Freddie Freeman did not play yesterday.
00:57:06He's not 100% healthy.
00:57:08But I go back to something that Derek Jeter said to me earlier this year about the Dodgers.
00:57:14The Dodgers have the unbelievable ability and knack for getting the team ready for October.
00:57:21I do think it's supremely important that they get a bye.
00:57:25I do think it's supremely important they get that two seed as opposed to the three.
00:57:29I think this graphic is brilliant because it underscores where Otani is physically and mentally right now.
00:57:38Zero homers over his last 13 games.
00:57:41Longest drought of the season.
00:57:43Look at the difference in the batting average on base percentage, the strikeout percentage.
00:57:49Early in the season, the first four months versus now.
00:57:54Shohei Otani did not forget how to play baseball.
00:57:56He's clearly not healthy and he's pressing.
00:58:01And Roberts admitted to the press that maybe they should have put him on the injured list a couple of
00:58:06weeks ago.
00:58:07They didn't.
00:58:08So they're going to do it now.
00:58:10I still think the Dodgers will end up getting a bye.
00:58:14That matters.
00:58:14Even if they don't get the one seed, nobody takes the Milwaukee Brewers seriously as a team that's going to
00:58:20win the World Series or go to the World Series and represent the National League.
00:58:23Honestly, I look at other teams in the National League who could challenge the Dodgers, not Milwaukee.
00:58:29Getting that bye and giving Shohei Otani and the rest of the Dodgers more time, that to me is supremely
00:58:35important here.
00:58:36But this is a move to win another championship.
00:58:39Dodgers are playing great baseball.
00:58:41The Dodgers deserve a lot of credit.
00:58:43The Dodgers pitching has been strong.
00:58:46Mookie Betts and the bats have been really good.
00:58:49If Otani's compromised, well, so is the opportunity to win another championship in World Series.
00:58:54So I think when it's all said and done, this move probably, and Roberts admitted it, should have been done
00:59:01a little while ago.
00:59:03Better safe than sorry.
00:59:04Now, let him get right physically.
00:59:07Let him get right mentally.
00:59:08And I think, I still believe in the unicorn.
00:59:11Big picture.
00:59:12We will get that March through July.
00:59:15The Otani version that Dodgers fans are accustomed to seeing.
00:59:18The unicorn.
00:59:19The most talented player in baseball history.
00:59:22That's the guy we will see for the Dodgers in October.
00:59:26There was another roster move that caught my attention yesterday.
00:59:29The Yankees have recalled Anthony Volpe.
00:59:32New Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr.
00:59:35who hit his first career Grand Slam yesterday, was asked if he thought it would be awkward having Volpe back
00:59:40after he took his job.
00:59:42I wouldn't say awkward.
00:59:43Like, we're all in the baseball world.
00:59:45We know what the baseball world is like.
00:59:46Kind of anything can happen.
00:59:47So, yeah, it's just things that happen.
00:59:50He's, you know, I'm finding out now that he's going to be here tomorrow.
00:59:53But, yeah, it makes sense.
00:59:54And I'm excited to have him.
00:59:55He's a great dude.
00:59:56And I know he's going to be good in the clubhouse.
00:59:58And, yeah, excited to work together.
01:00:00If you look closely and read the thought bubble over George Lombard Jr.'s head,
01:00:05he said, why the hell is Volpe back on this team?
01:00:08Or maybe that's just me.
01:00:09Look, I can't yell and scream about it, even though I just did.
01:00:13Because Jazz Chisholm Jr. is hurt that he's going on the injured list.
01:00:18So, Volpe plays in the middle infields.
01:00:21So, I can't go nuts.
01:00:24I don't care that he looked like Barry Bonds at AAA.
01:00:27He's a 4A player.
01:00:28He's never going to make it with the Yankees.
01:00:30Maybe he makes it somewhere else.
01:00:32I don't think that's ever going to happen.
01:00:33And I just want Lombard Jr. to be free and easy.
01:00:39That Grand Slam was huge.
01:00:41We said on Shine Time when Aaron Judge came off the injured list earlier this week,
01:00:46the Yankees needed to sweep Colorado.
01:00:49Took game one.
01:00:50Took game two.
01:00:51Game three.
01:00:52Have to be able to take it.
01:00:53And I hate calling for sweeps in baseball because it's so difficult to do.
01:00:57The Yankees still need to go out and catch Tampa Bay.
01:01:01So, I said on Shine Time on Tuesday.
01:01:03Five and one this week.
01:01:04Two out of three against the Mets this weekend.
01:01:07Sweep the Rockies.
01:01:08Has to happen.
01:01:09Five and one has to be the record.
01:01:10Take two out of three against the Twins of Minnesota.
01:01:13Two out of three against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.
01:01:16And then have the ability to beat Tampa.
01:01:19Four games.
01:01:20It's going to be huge.
01:01:21Final week of the season.
01:01:22Then you finish up with the Baltimore Orioles.
01:01:24I'm disgusted that I have to stare at Volpe's face wearing the gorgeous, majestic pinstripes
01:01:32that he disgraced for so long.
01:01:34But because Jazz is going on the injured list, I will curb my anger.
01:01:41But let me tell you something.
01:01:42If Lombard goes into a funk and has to deal with something else mentally
01:01:48because Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone brought Volpe back into the mix,
01:01:54the gloves are coming off.
