00:00We've all seen one.
00:01We all have one.
00:03What am I talking about?
00:05The junk drawer!
00:08I'm going to show you how to turn a junk drawer into a functional space.
00:14I'm Bea, a video producer at Refinery29 with a side hustle as a personal organizer.
00:19I help people transform their spaces by changing the way they think about their stuff.
00:24This is Bea Organized.
00:29Now the hardest part for some people is knowing where to start.
00:32So I'm going to make this very easy.
00:34Go get the drawer.
00:35Step 1.
00:36Decide what this drawer should even be.
00:38Where did it come from?
00:39Is it in your kitchen?
00:40Is it in your living room?
00:41Is it in your bathroom?
00:43You've got to make this drawer work for you, not the other way around.
00:46So this drawer came from my kitchen.
00:48And as you can see, it's become a catch-all for almost everything.
00:52But what I'd really like to use it as is a first aid place,
00:56a place for medicine that I want to access easily.
00:59So that brings us to step 2.
01:01Empty out the drawer.
01:03Here we go.
01:07Found a bug.
01:10So we have all of our items out on the table in front of us.
01:13Get rid of any items that don't fit your plan for your new drawer.
01:17For example, the first thing I see is money.
01:20This could go in my wallet.
01:21Pens, glue, this stuff can all go on my desk.
01:24I have a calculator on my phone.
01:26I don't even know the last time I used a real calculator.
01:29If you find yourself removing a lot of items from the pile
01:31and you're not sure where to put them, set them aside for now
01:34because you'll have to figure out strategically where they go.
01:37The point is to get away from throwing things into drawers without a plan.
01:42It's time to divide and conquer the drawer.
01:44So I'm going to use a combination of store-bought dividers that I already had
01:47and some DIY dividers that I found lying around my apartment.
01:51For example, I have this old perfume box that's very sturdy
01:55and it's a great thing to use for knick-knacks lying around.
01:58I already had this wire bin.
01:59It was actually in the junk drawer.
02:01You just didn't even see it because it was under so much stuff.
02:03So I have a bunch of loose items and I'm going to corral them into this little plastic container.
02:08But if you don't have something like this, a plastic bag will work just fine.
02:11The next step is to move everything in.
02:13I'm going to start with bigger items so I can get a sense of how they even fit into the
02:17space.
02:17I would prioritize the stuff that I use most towards the front of the drawer.
02:21So if I'm in a rush, I can just grab it and go.
02:24And there you have it.
02:25You've seen the drawer go from this to that.
02:29And let's face it, you may relapse, but the next time you jump up your drawer,
02:33at least you'll have a plan to get it back in shape.
