00:00I'm Lucy Fink.
00:01I'm a video producer at Refinery29, but every so often I like to try other people's jobs.
00:06So today I'm hanging with my dad, Jimmy Fink, to see if I have what it takes to do his
00:10job.
00:11This is Lucy for Hire.
00:17My name's Jimmy Fink.
00:18I've been a New York radio personality for about 45 years.
00:23I also work for Rolling Stone magazine, producing a nationally syndicated radio show and interviewed
00:29just a ton of people during that time, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, David Bowie, all different
00:36kinds of people, not just music personalities.
00:38I'm always thanking my listeners.
00:40I know that you have so many different ways to listen to music now, and the fact that they
00:45have chosen to listen to conventional radio is very humbling and heartwarming.
00:51I think Lucy is so used to talking in public and is just very, very friendly and natural.
00:57She'll do fine on the air.
00:59Your first challenge is to warm up and find your radio voice.
01:03Here's how it goes.
01:05Ming mung, ming mung, ming mung, ming mung, ming mung, ming.
01:08Oh.
01:09Ming mung, ming mung, ming mung, ming mung, ming mung, ming mung, ming.
01:13Oh.
01:14Wait.
01:15Are you getting higher?
01:16Yeah.
01:16You try to get a little bit higher each time.
01:18And the ming mung really kind of gets your lips flapping in your mouth already.
01:40And you have to really move your mouth.
01:43You have to move your mouth because you've got to get your lips and your tongue and everything
01:45moving.
01:46I think for me the hardest part is loosening up the lips because I will sometimes stumble
01:52or something.
01:53Brrr.
01:53Brrr.
01:54That's good also.
01:55That's good to do that.
01:56Brrr.
01:58You spit on me.
01:59I'm sorry.
02:02Brrr.
02:04Your second challenge is to learn how to operate the control board.
02:09Okay.
02:09This runs the entire radio station.
02:12My dad walked me through the various knobs and dials and it seems complicated but once
02:17you know what you're looking at, it's pretty easy.
02:20So quiz me.
02:21So quiz you.
02:22So say the song was ending and you're ready to go on the air.
02:25What's the first thing you're going to do?
02:31Hello.
02:31Good job.
02:33Did it.
02:34If you wanted to add a song into the system, what would you do?
02:38I would go to the library.
02:40Yes.
02:42Choose Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
02:43Good choice.
02:44And I'd put it right after my empty voice track.
02:48Good job.
02:49Perfect.
02:49So say you're on the air and the song is over and you're ready to talk.
02:54What are you going to do?
02:55I wait for the song to end and then fade it down.
03:01Very good.
03:02You got the mechanics right except over here that's the CD player and we're not playing
03:05the CD.
03:06We're playing songs from here.
03:07Oops.
03:08Oops.
03:08Oops.
03:09Okay.
03:10So it's not that easy.
03:12That's it.
03:13Perfect.
03:14Good job.
03:15Good job.
03:16Your third challenge is to go live.
03:18Oh no.
03:19Yeah.
03:19But we can't do it in here because this is the production studio where I just taught you
03:23everything.
03:23Okay.
03:23We have to go into the live studio.
03:25Alright.
03:27After warming up my voice and understanding the control board it was time to put everything
03:31I learned to the test.
03:34We're here.
03:35We're here.
03:35Once I was in the live studio I logged into the system, sound checked the equipment and
03:40prepared for my very first live run.
03:44Should my lips be touching the mic?
03:48Dad.
03:49Huh?
03:50No.
03:51You should just be right up to it but not touching it.
03:54Okay.
03:54Okay?
03:55There are three things you need to do.
03:57First, you have to be conversational.
04:00Second, say who you are.
04:03And lastly, you need to introduce the song.
04:06Okay.
04:0730 seconds.
04:08Headphones on.
04:09The song is about to end.
04:11A little promo is going to play and then you're going to talk.
04:1420 seconds.
04:15Are we ready?
04:16Yeah.
04:16Here we go.
04:17Five seconds.
04:18Ah!
04:21Hey everyone.
04:22It's me, Lucy Fink.
04:24Jimmy Fink's youngest daughter here today with him at 107.1 The Peak in White Plains.
04:31Here I am.
04:32How am I doing?
04:33Send us an email.
04:34Let me know what you think of my voice.
04:36Or don't.
04:37Maybe don't do that.
04:38Next song I'm going to play for you was one of my picks.
04:42This is one of my favorite artists, Ed Sheeran.
04:45I actually saw him live at Madison Square Garden with Taylor Swift years back.
04:49Here's Ed Sheeran's Castle on a Hill.
04:54I did it!
04:56How was it?
04:57Good.
04:58It was good?
04:59Yeah.
05:00Your final challenge is to take a phone call from a listener.
05:03Okay?
05:04Okay.
05:04The song's about to end.
05:06The phone doesn't ring in the studio, so you've got to keep your eye on that Fink.
05:09When it's blinking, that means someone's calling.
05:11He's calling now!
05:11There he is.
05:12Okay.
05:12Here we go.
05:15Hello.
05:15You're on the air.
05:16Who's speaking?
05:18Hi.
05:18I'm Chris from White Plains.
05:19Is this Lucy Fink?
05:20Hi, Chris.
05:21Yes, this is Lucy Fink.
05:23How you doing?
05:24Great.
05:24I love the peak.
05:25I'm a big fan of your dad.
05:27Oh, awesome.
05:28That's incredible.
05:29Yeah, this is my first time talking to a listener.
05:32Well, you're doing pretty well.
05:35And I have a question for you.
05:37Yes, go ahead.
05:38How do you come up with these ideas that you have in your videos?
05:42I actually read every single comment that I get on my YouTube videos, and most often,
05:48I'm getting my ideas for new videos from commenters.
05:51Oh, well, that's awesome.
05:52You do a great job on the videos.
05:54Thank you so much.
05:55It's been a pleasure speaking with you.
05:56This was my first and only and best listener call.
06:00Hope to hear you next time.
06:02Thanks, Lucy.
06:03Thanks.
06:04Have a good one.
06:05And up next, we're going to listen to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds on the Peak.
06:13You did it.
06:14I did it.
06:15Good job.
06:16How was I?
06:16Video killed the radio star.
06:18You're the radio star today.
06:20Yay.
06:21Ugh.
06:22Lucy did great.
06:24Somebody from White Plains actually called in who watches her videos.
06:28It's unbelievable.
06:29The Think Radio legacy is definitely in good hands.
06:33Lucy could be on the air for 45 more years.
06:36I had so much fun with my dad today.
06:39I would love to be a radio DJ.
06:42How'd I do?
06:43You have a face for radio.
06:45You too.
06:46Thanks.
06:46Thanks.
06:47I've always been a daddy's girl.
06:49So spending an entire day at my dad's office made me so incredibly happy.
06:53And who knows?
06:54Maybe someday I'll be carrying on the Think Family radio legacy.
06:57So be sure to listen out for me at 1071thepeak.com.
07:01Thanks for watching my video with my dad Jimmy.
