00:21Oh! You startled me there.
00:24I forgot my name. It's Barbie.
00:25I'm going to teach and we're going to learn how to.
00:28Thank you so much for joining me on my journey to learn how to behave.
00:33Women are meant to be seen and not heard.
00:35We've come a long way from that, but many of us are self-conscious about our bodies
00:39because we're still very much judged on how we look.
00:42So I'm on a journey to see if it's possible to love your body wholeheartedly.
00:48First up, Monica is a Bronx-born artist who is very public on social media
00:52with her vulnerabilities about her body.
00:54Her skin, her hair, and everything else that we all worry about.
01:00My paintings tend to explore what can and can't be seen with the female body.
01:04A lot of it has to do with my identity as an immigrant and also as a person of color.
01:09And over the years, it became something a lot more intentional,
01:11really tuning into the conversations that are had.
01:13It's like my body, it's my work, it's just my words, but it creates a community.
01:18So how do you think that the social media responses have changed or have not changed over the years?
01:23Sometimes it gets really dark, like people are like, you should die, like how dare you?
01:27I've had people call me like a fucking pig, like say really crazy shit.
01:33I'm just like delete, blah, like done, not engaging with this, honestly.
01:39And believing that you have to behave modestly is a big thing.
01:42Like, you know, you're big so hide it.
01:45Like you have to wear these certain clothes so you look good.
01:47You can shave it off so shave it.
01:49You're supposed to be kind of made to be looked at.
01:52So growing up, what was your journey with body hair like?
01:54I used to really hate having body hair.
01:57My mom didn't let me shave until I was maybe like 13 or 14.
02:00It was just constantly on my mind.
02:02But I think when I stopped shaving and stuff, that's when I really grew into myself
02:05and was able to realize this is what my body does and it does it for a reason.
02:08Before I always felt like I had to shave.
02:12Yeah, people put this ideal on women or people in general to like be this like sex doll that's like
02:18hairless.
02:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:27So I'm gonna take this here mic and go interview people on the street about their thoughts on body image
02:32and body hair.
02:33Ma'am? Ma'am?
02:34Hello, can I please?
02:35Can I please?
02:36It's just one, I swear.
02:38Just please don't, it's just one question.
02:40I just have to talk to you.
02:41How do you feel about body hair on people in general?
02:44Um, I'm not crazy about it to be honest.
02:49I prefer less.
02:51Do you shave everything or do you have like certain things that you just like don't?
02:54Wax and shave.
02:56What do you personally do to groom?
02:57Oh, I just let it all hang out.
02:58I'm all natural.
03:00Ooh, so you don't spend any time on that.
03:02How much time do you think you spend grooming a week?
03:06Grooming?
03:07What do you shave and what don't you shave?
03:08I shave my arms and my legs and my armpits.
03:11And how do you feel about body hair on women?
03:15I, ooh, that's bad because I don't particularly care for body hair on women.
03:20A little hair on the arm is okay but just keep it completely shaved off.
03:26I spoke to a few men and they seem to reinforce all of our fears.
03:30Hair on men, hygienic, fine.
03:32Hair on women, uncleanliness, ugly, unattractive.
03:48So all this male feedback got me a little fired up.
03:51It inspired me to seek out people who accept each other's bodies the way they are.
03:55Next up, the young naturists of America believe in tolerance, body positivity, and ending of censorship.
04:01Welcome to Rock Lodge.
04:03Is there like an undressing room or do people just show up nude?
04:07No, people undress at their car or wherever they feel comfortable.
04:10I feel comfortable right here.
04:12I'm just kind of...
04:16Oh, shit.
04:19Oh, yeah, baby.
04:20You just like feel the air, you feel the sun, you feel, you know, you're in tune with nature
04:25and you feel connected to the earth.
04:27I love that.
04:28Yeah.
04:32Oh, someone's like sunbathing over there.
04:35Breeze feels good upon my nips.
04:38To Felicity, what usually draws people into naturism?
04:41Like the body acceptance does draw them into it.
04:44I mean, they come and they try it and they're like, wow, nobody's looking at me.
04:48Every single person has different body types.
04:50You see all sorts of things and you can relate to people.
04:53Be like, wow, like I also have like a body like yours or it's not abnormal for me to have
04:58fat in my body.
04:59Or have, you know, like one boob bigger than the other.
05:03I'm Barbie.
05:04I've been a naturist for four hours now.
05:08It's been great.
05:10So what we're first going to do is actually use this gender neutral and empty body outline
05:16and just write any kind of negative messages that you've gotten about your body.
05:20Gotta go with the cankles.
05:22Too hairy.
05:24Somebody said pancake boobs.
05:26Everyone likes pancakes.
05:29Flappy arms.
05:31Wrinkles.
05:32My biggest insecurity is my feet.
05:37Yeah, there's like a lot here.
05:39I mean, this could take up a lot of mental energy if you're worried about all these various different things.
05:44And you do have to consciously say, I'm not going to have this make me feel bad about myself.
05:51One thing I wanted to do was skate dip.
05:54So...
05:55Oh, I'm free!
05:57This might kasut p 모습.
06:12I've already seen a little bit, but it looks like I was looking through within myself.cık.
06:22Anyway,
06:22It looks
06:22like now. I also
06:22got the names to plazp at the camera. You can
06:23be gr直äv you!
06:30how often do you guys like paint each other it's a common thing for nudists
06:33like it's artistic it's like fun the canvas is right there okay so I have a
06:39question don't get mad at me for asking what happens if you get an erection it
06:49rarely ever happens because it's not sexual it's not a sexual like atmosphere
06:51but like but like I was joking but like seriously you know if something that
06:55happened you know like just like you know usually just it doesn't really
07:00happen but it's like it does like you know you can just like don't flaunt it
07:04you know I mean like if you keep having it for a long time that's because you
07:07want to have it because you have other intentions so but like I when I got here
07:12I must say like I was a little nervous I was like oh my god I have to unleash like
07:15my naked body I remember feeling completely terrified by the idea of it
07:19and now it's the complete opposite like I could go in the middle of Times Square
07:23naked in front of my friends and family coming to the Rock Lodge I've learned
07:26that people tend to judge others on their bodies on their clothing on the
07:31way they speak everything else but here it's designated to be a safe space the
07:36mission of naturists are pretty much everything I'm about body positivity
07:41anti-censorship good self-image and just being nice to everyone and being here you
07:47can feel whole because you're more than just your body you are a person
