00:13It's Barbie Ferreira, and I'm going to teach you how to be...
00:20Ooh, I'm screaming.
00:23I'm screaming.
00:25It's Barbie Ferreira, and I'm going to learn slash teach you how to behave, I guess.
00:34I like to think I have my own look, but not everyone gets it.
00:38In my career, people are always wanting me to have a more sophisticated street style,
00:43whatever that means.
00:44But I like a tank moment in flip-flops.
00:47Is that so bad?
00:48So I decided to find the most proper lady in the most proper field
00:53to see if she could help class up my style.
01:00We're here in Connecticut, where I'm going to meet Louisa,
01:03a professional dressage instructor.
01:05What is dressage, you ask?
01:08It's a super fussy equestrian sport that puts an emphasis on looks.
01:14I mean, look, even the freaking horse dresses up.
01:20Oh, look at that horsey!
01:24Oh!
01:24Oh, no!
01:27He just walked away from me.
01:29Dean.
01:33Wow!
01:35Oh, no!
01:36What's wrong?
01:37LOL.
01:38All the animals can tell I'm out of place here.
01:40Hi, I'm Barbie.
01:41Hi, I'm Louisa.
01:42Nice to meet you.
01:43Nice to meet you.
01:43Thank you so much for letting me play with these horses.
01:47Have you ever ridden before?
01:48No.
01:49Okay.
01:50First thing we're going to do, we're going to get you dressed.
01:52Ready to go?
01:53Yes, I am.
01:53As ready as I'll ever be.
01:54Let's go, let's go get ready.
02:01So I'm going to show you some of the items that we would use.
02:04For dressage, we want to look elegant because that's the beauty of our sport.
02:09The horses are basically ballerinas, so we want to fit in with them as much as we can.
02:14So do you want to try something on?
02:16I would love to.
02:16Okay, let's go.
02:17We have here some white breeches that you would wear your shirt, and then around your shirt, we wear a
02:27sock, and then a jacket.
02:32You look great.
02:34I feel very, very, very fancy.
02:36I think everyone will agree from the previous outfit to this outfit, I think we're looking pretty good.
02:41We're looking, like, fancy.
02:43Shady.
02:52When you look the part, you feel better.
02:55When your clothes fit properly, it helps you keep your form tidier.
02:59It's a whole picture.
03:00You know, nobody wants to see a slob show up.
03:04Before, when you were able to wear your top hat, you had really developed as a rider, so it was
03:11a little bit of a symbol.
03:12This is me.
03:14This is me.
03:15Very small hat.
03:19Ladies, I'm ready to ride.
03:20You would actually look really nice in a top hat.
03:23We're just, it's just a little small.
03:26You're the one.
03:28You're going to put your left stirrup in here.
03:30Now you still hold the other side of the saddle.
03:32That's it.
03:33And then slowly lift yourself up.
03:36There you go.
03:37All right.
03:38How was that?
03:39It's great.
03:41I'm just going to go with it.
03:43I'm going with it, everyone.
03:50I definitely admire Louisa's attention to detail, but that level of structured style is a bit too much for me.
03:58So we're here in Bushwick, and we're about to meet my good friend, Nicky Otto.
04:02Nicky!
04:04Yeah!
04:05He's a quintessential New York City club kid.
04:07He has an absolutely amazing aesthetic and an amazing eye to fashion.
04:11It's crazy.
04:12I personally don't, so we're going to find out.
04:21Come on in.
04:23So glad you're here.
04:24This is my little piece of Paradiso.
04:28So what's the plan for tonight?
04:30Where are you taking me?
04:31Well, we're going to go out to this party that I'm hosting.
04:33You'll know a ton of people that are there.
04:35All people who are definitely going to be dressed to the nine, so we've got to do a good look.
04:38I want to see what you brought.
04:40I don't have anything colorful.
04:42I'm really bad at shopping, so you need to help me with that.
04:44So this is my new pants, and I have this top.
04:47It definitely shows the titties, which I like.
04:49I like showing bobs.
04:50All right, seriously, Barbie, I can't believe you just came here with some beige shit.
04:54So I really think you should try some stuff in my closet.
04:58We should put you in this.
05:00At least try it on.
05:01I love this jacket.
05:02You should try that, too.
05:03That's cute.
05:04Here.
05:05Thanks.
05:05Oh, I have this booby top.
05:06Weigh this.
05:06It's so cute.
05:07Booby top?
05:08I love that.
05:09You know, maybe we could try that on you as well.
05:14We should really accessorize.
05:16This is cute.
05:16I think it'll fit some of your stuff.
05:18And I should get you some jewelry here.
05:20With it here, just put those there.
05:22Oh, yeah, glass.
05:23I can never over-accessorize, so I want to try everything on.
05:26You're a princess.
05:30So try some of this stuff on, and we'll see what works.
05:32Uh-huh.
05:43So how important do you think that confidence is in pulling off a look?
05:47If you love it, I think other people will love it a lot more than not.
05:51So confidence is probably, like, the last thing you need to throw on before you go out
05:55and look.
05:59You spend all this time and energy into creating your looks and expressing your creativity.
06:03Why?
06:04It's out of respect for this as an art form.
06:08And the people who have existed before us who made this a tradition in New York in the
06:13first place.
06:14It's all about queer expression and being out there in whatever way works for you.
06:23Talking to Nikki and Louisa, I learned it's not about what you wear, but how you wear it.
06:28Hold your head high, rock your look with confidence, and people will appreciate you for it.
06:33A little effort goes a long way.
