00:00Beauty brands love using the ocean to market new products.
00:03But beneath the surface, the industry is polluting the ocean.
00:08You may have heard that sunscreen could be damaging coral reefs.
00:11In July 2018, Hawaii became the first state to ban sunscreen ingredients oxybenzone and octanoxate.
00:19We need the reefs for food, we need them for oxygen, we need them for coastal protection.
00:24There's probably a lot of medicines that can save lives that we don't even know about in there.
00:28Absolutely. And we're destroying them.
00:30Yeah. Yeah.
00:31I think what we need to do is make sure these chemicals are safe before we use them.
00:36But figuring out what's actually safe is harder than you might think.
00:40There's this one that says reef safe on it, but if you look on the back, it's got avobenzone.
00:46We don't know if that's safe for the reef or not.
00:48You could argue that a lot of these chemicals are sort of this great human experiment
00:52because we don't know the long-term potential impacts.
