00:01Cruise passengers exposed to a deadly virus are now on American soil, where they're being isolated and what happens next.
00:08Plus, President Trump shoots down Iran's response to end the war, why nuclear demands are still blocking any deal.
00:16And a federal gas tax break is back in play, but it might be just a drop in the bucket
00:21to counter the prices we're seeing at the pump.
00:26The stories that matter, clear and credible from across the country to around the world.
00:32These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:38Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:40We begin this morning here in Omaha, where passengers from a cruise ship at the center of a deadly Hantavirus
00:45outbreak have landed, touching down just hours ago and headed into a high security quarantine unit.
00:52You're looking here at video of the plane arriving earlier this morning at Epley Airfield in Omaha.
00:57A convoy of police and medical vehicles then bringing those passengers to Nebraska Medicine.
01:03I headed there yesterday and was able to get video you see right here and pictures of the hospital, where
01:09they will now be monitored and possibly treated.
01:12Things were pretty calm on the hospital campus before the big arrival.
01:16The patients are being taken and watched at the National Quarantine Unit, the only federally funded unit of its kind
01:22in the country.
01:23If anyone develops symptoms of Hantavirus, they can be moved immediately to the biocontainment unit in the same building for
01:30treatment.
01:30This is a look inside at the rooms where they will be staying.
01:34Seventeen Americans and one British national who lives in the United States were evacuated from the MV Hondias, which docked
01:41in the Canary Islands on Sunday.
01:43So far, one American has tested positive.
01:46Another is showing symptoms.
01:48A French passenger from that same cruise ship has also tested positive.
01:52Health officials say the virus is usually linked to rodents.
01:55But in this case, the World Health Organization believes it likely spread person to person on board.
02:01Since the outbreak started in mid-April, three people from the ship have died and several others have been infected.
02:08Iran is pushing back after President Trump rejected its latest peace proposal, calling it totally unacceptable.
02:15Iran's foreign ministry says the offer was, quote, reasonable and generous.
02:20State media reports the proposal called for an end to the war and the U.S. naval blockade, which Iran
02:27described as maritime piracy.
02:28It also included demands to release frozen Iranian assets, recognize Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz, and pay compensation
02:37for war damage.
02:38The proposal did not address Iran's nuclear program, a central issue for the United States.
02:44Trump dismissed the offer and accused Iran of playing games in a social media post.
02:49He also warned, quote, they will be laughing no longer without providing details.
02:53The rejection sent oil prices higher overnight.
02:57Brent crude climbed above $104 a barrel, while the U.S. benchmark pushed close to $100.
03:04In a related topic, the Trump administration says it's open to suspending the federal gas tax as prices climb.
03:11The national average now sits at $4.52 a gallon.
03:15That's up more than 50 percent since the war with Iran began.
03:19Drivers pay about 18 cents a gallon in federal taxes.
03:23Even if that tax is paused, prices would still stay well above pre-war levels.
03:29Oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively blocked.
03:33That's tightening supply and keeping pressure on prices.
03:35The administration says it's looking at ways to bring costs down, but won't predict where prices go next.
03:42Here's Energy Secretary Chris Wright on NBC Sunday.
03:45All measures that can be taken to lower the price at the pump and lower the prices for Americans this
03:52administration is in support of.
03:54You're saying that you, that President Trump, would be open to suspending the federal gas tax?
04:00We're open to all ideas.
04:02Everything has tradeoffs.
04:03All ideas to lower prices for American consumers and American businesses.
04:08Any gas tax holiday would require Congress to act.
04:12Wright said prices are likely to stay high until the conflict in Iran ends.
04:16He would not rule out prices hitting $5 a gallon before that happens.
04:21A week-long search for two missing American soldiers in Morocco has led to a recovery as the hunt continues
04:28for the second service member.
04:30The Army has identified the soldier as 27-year-old First Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr. of Richmond, Virginia.
04:37Moroccan search teams found his body Saturday morning about a mile offshore near where he and another soldier fell into
04:45the Atlantic during an off-duty hike.
04:47Key was a platoon leader assigned to an air defense unit and was in Morocco for a large-scale military
04:53exercise.
04:54His remains are now being prepared for return to the United States.
04:58Meanwhile, the search continues for the second missing soldier.
05:01More than 1,000 personnel are involved using ships, aircraft, and divers to comb the area off the coast.
05:09Virginia Democrats are scrambling after a court loss and now weighing how far they're willing to go to get their
05:15map back.
05:16On Friday, the state Supreme Court threw out a congressional map voters had approved.
05:21Now, top Democrats are trying to figure out what comes next and fast.
05:25The clock is ticking.
05:26State elections officials say any changes need to happen within days to avoid disrupting the August primary.
05:33Behind the scenes, Democratic leaders held a private call over the weekend.
05:38According to the New York Times, frustration was high and options were wide open.
05:43One idea getting attention and pushback is to lower the mandatory retirement age for Virginia Supreme Court justices and force
05:51out the entire court.
05:52Supporters say it's about preserving the map voters already approved.
05:57In a statement to the Times, Virginia Democratic Congressman Suhas Subramaniam said, quote,
06:03We have Republican states ignoring their constitutions and interrupting early voting and ignoring their Supreme Courts altogether.
06:11We know based on that, Republicans would explore every single option possible to move this forward.
06:17House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, who was on that call Saturday, is also signaling no limits, telling the Times, quote,
06:24It's unprecedented in American history, as far as we can tell, that an actual election has been overturned by a
06:31handful of unelected judges.
06:32We're not going to step back. We will continue to fight back.
06:36There is still no final plan.
06:38Democrats say they're reviewing legal options, including a possible appeal, while also trying to flip congressional seats in the midterms
06:46under the current map, if nothing changes.
06:49Finally this morning, the Pentagon is opening the files, releasing decades of reports on UFOs and UAPs for the public
06:56to see.
06:57More than 160 files, including photos, incident reports, and witness accounts, are now posted on a Defense Department website.
07:05Many of the images were captured by military aircraft, showing unidentified objects moving through the sky.
07:12Some date back to 1969, including photos taken by Apollo astronauts during the moon mission.
07:19Others document reports of flying disks from the late 1940s through the 1960s, including the well-known Roswell incident in
07:27New Mexico.
07:28That case involved a crash and recovery of an unusual object, described at the time as having a hexagon shape
07:35with a ball and cable attached.
07:37Today, Roswell still marks that event with an annual UFO festival that draws thousands.
07:43Reminds me of going to the theater as a kid and seeing close encounters of the third kind.
07:48Had us watching the outer space in the evening sky every night for months on end.
07:53Wow.
07:54All right, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
07:56This morning at 9, the man accused of opening fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, Cole Thomas Allen, will
08:03appear in federal court for arraignment.
08:05At 9.30, families gather in Miami to mark 30 years since the value jet crash that killed 110 people.
08:12At 10, new home sales numbers could offer another read on the housing market.
08:17And later, former FBI Director James Comey appears in court in North Carolina over a social media post prosecutors say
08:24threatened President Trump.
