00:29The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:35These are your Unbiased Updates from Straight Arrow.
00:40Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:42This morning, Iran is accusing the United States of breaking the ceasefire after President Trump announced plans to escort ships
00:50through the Strait of Hormuz.
00:51Under what the president is calling Project Freedom, U.S. officials say they've set up an enhanced security area near
00:59the Strait and are directing ships to coordinate with Omani authorities as traffic builds.
01:04The Strait of Hormuz runs between Iran and Oman.
01:08Iranian officials are calling the escort plan a direct violation of the ceasefire.
01:12One senior military leader warning, quote, any foreign military force will be attacked.
01:18It's still unclear whether any commercial ships have accepted the American offer.
01:23Meanwhile, Trump says he's reviewing Iran's latest peace proposal, but signals he's not likely to accept it.
01:29In a social media post, he said he can't imagine the deal would be acceptable, adding Iran has, quote, not
01:36yet paid a big enough price.
01:37Separately, the U.S. is returning an Iranian ship and its crew after it was stopped during last month's naval
01:44standoff.
01:45Pakistani officials say the 22 crew members were transferred overnight and the ship will be returned after repairs.
01:53As the war with Iran pushes oil prices higher, Spirit Airlines has shut down after more than three decades in
02:00business.
02:00The airline grounded all flights on Saturday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded with little warning and no customer support.
02:09About 17,000 employees were left without a job.
02:13Spirit says that surging fuel costs linked to the Iran war made its low-cost model unsustainable.
02:19The Trump administration is pushing back, blaming the Biden administration for blocking a proposed merger with JetBlue in 2023.
02:28Spirit was in dire straits long before the war with Iran.
02:32Multiple times they had filed for bankruptcy.
02:34Their model wasn't working.
02:36They couldn't get to fiscal health.
02:37If the markets are saying there needs to be a merger because there's health issues with one of the airlines
02:44or more than one airline,
02:45we have to take a look at it and make sure we make the right choices.
02:48And in this situation, history has judged the denial of the merger between JetBlue and Spirit through the Biden administration
02:56with, I think, a view that it was a massive mistake.
03:03Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says Spirit's collapse does not signal broader trouble for budget airlines,
03:10and he does not support a government bailout.
03:12That comes after several low-cost carriers recently asked for $2.5 billion in federal relief.
03:19Duffy dismissed that request, saying some airlines were looking to cash in, not necessarily based on need, but based on
03:26opportunity.
03:27Passengers who bought tickets before the Spirit shutdown are being issued full refunds.
03:33Elsewhere, two American service members have vanished during military exercises in Morocco, and a massive search is now underway.
03:41U.S. Africa Command says the soldiers went missing near the Captra training area along the Atlantic coast.
03:48A U.S. defense official tells the Associated Press the two were on a recreational hike after training had wrapped
03:55up for the day and were last seen near ocean cliffs.
03:58Officials believe they may have fallen into the water.
04:01No foul play is suspected, according to CBS News.
04:04Search teams from the U.S., Morocco, and other partner nations are now combing the area using helicopters, ships, and
04:11ground crews.
04:12The exercise, known as African Lion, is the largest annual U.S.-led military drill on the continent, involving more than
04:207,000 personnel from at least 30 countries.
04:23The training is now paused as military leaders shift resources to the search.
04:28Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
04:30Three people are dead after a suspected outbreak of a rare virus on a cruise ship in the Atlantic.
04:37Health officials tell the Associated Press it's likely hantavirus, a disease usually linked to rodents, not cruise ships.
04:45The case has happened aboard the MV Hondias, which had about 150 passengers on about a seven-week voyage from
04:52South America to Europe.
04:54An elderly couple is among the three people killed.
04:57Another patient is in intensive care.
04:59At least a few others are showing symptoms, and the World Health Organization is now investigating.
05:05Hantavirus typically spreads through contact with rodent droppings or urine.
05:09And while it's rare, it can turn deadly, causing severe lung infection.
05:14What's unusual here, experts say this is not something you normally see on cruise ships,
05:19and they're still trying to figure out exactly how it spread.
05:22Contact tracing is underway.
05:25Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in critical but stable condition this morning after being hospitalized.
05:32His spokesman, Ted Goodman, says the 81-year-old remains in the hospital but did not disclose what led to
05:38his admission.
05:39Goodman called Giuliani a fighter and asked for prayers.
05:42Giuliani led New York City through the September 11th terror attacks and later served as a top advisor to President
05:48Trump.
05:49On Truth Social, the president called him a true warrior and the best mayor in the city's history.
05:55A spokesperson for former mayor Eric Adams also praised Giuliani's leadership, pointing to his years as a federal prosecutor.
06:02There's still no timeline for his recovery.
06:04Finally this morning, more than 1,000 beagles are heading out of a Wisconsin breeding and research facility into what
06:13rescue groups hope will be permanent homes.
06:16Big Dog Ranch Rescue began removing hundreds of dogs from Ridgeland Farms on Friday, with many more still to be
06:22relocated.
06:23The facility operator has agreed to give up its breeding license after prosecutors backed off felony animal mistreatment charges.
06:31State investigators say the company performed eye procedures on the dogs and failed to meet basic veterinary standards.
06:38The situation escalated last month when animal rights activists showed up in Blue Mounds and tried to free the dogs
06:45themselves.
06:46Deputies responded and clashes followed with tear gas and rubber bullets used to disperse the crowd.
06:51Now, a deal involving Big Dog Ranch and the Center for a Humane Economy is moving the dogs out.
06:58About 1,000 will be put up for adoption, with the rest transferred to partner rescue groups.
07:04All right, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
07:06Attend the Pentagon Awards medals to National Guardsmen involved in last year's White House area shooting,
07:12honoring acts of non-combat heroism, including a moment of silence for a soldier killed in that attack.
07:18Also attend the U.N. General Assembly meets to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,
07:24with disarmament and nuclear security on the agenda.
07:28At 11, a federal court hearing for the suspect in the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting,
07:33Cole Allen Thomas, with cameras outside the courthouse.
