00:35These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:41Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelly.
00:43After months of war, missile strikes, threats of escalation, and a shock to global energy markets,
00:49the United States and Iran say they have a deal.
00:52President Trump is heading to Europe this morning after announcing what he calls
00:56a completed agreement that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz
00:59and pause a conflict that has dominated headlines for months.
01:03Trump posted Sunday that the deal is complete,
01:07saying he has authorized the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
01:10and the removal of the U.S. naval blockade.
01:12The agreement is expected to be formally signed Friday in Geneva, Switzerland.
01:17While the full text has not been released,
01:20officials say the framework includes a 60-day extension of the ceasefire
01:24and a new round of negotiations over Iran's nuclear program.
01:28The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20 percent of the world's oil supply,
01:32so the market reaction was fast.
01:35Oil prices fell sharply overnight,
01:37while stock markets across Asia moved higher
01:40on expectations that energy shipments could soon return to normal.
01:44Iranian state media is also reporting the agreement this morning,
01:47though Tehran says implementation will not begin until the document is signed later this week.
01:54Even with the framework in place, questions remain about what happens next.
01:59Iran and the U.S. are already offering differing accounts of what comes after Friday's signing,
02:04particularly when it comes to sanctions relief, frozen assets, and future nuclear talks.
02:10And Israel is showing signs of concern.
02:12Defense Minister Israel Katz says Israel will not withdraw forces from southern Lebanon,
02:19despite Iran's claim that the agreement calls for an end to military operations there.
02:24One prominent pro-Netanyahu commentator went even further,
02:28writing on social media that, quote,
02:30Trump came out a loser.
02:32Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is also urging caution.
02:35He writes that he is somewhat concerned,
02:38because Iran's description of the agreement does not appear to match
02:42what the American negotiating team is saying.
02:45President Trump is en route to France this morning for a G7 summit,
02:50where he will arrive with that new diplomatic agreement in hand.
02:54Security is tight in the French lakeside town of Evian,
02:57where leaders from the world's largest economies are gathering for three days of talks.
03:02The Hotel Royal, overlooking Lake Geneva, will serve as the centerpiece of the summit.
03:07That's where Trump is expected to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron
03:11and other world leaders.
03:13The Iran agreement may ease one of the biggest crises facing the summit,
03:17but it does not erase the disagreements between Trump and many of the leaders he's about to meet.
03:22Beyond Iran, leaders are also set to discuss Ukraine,
03:26trade, artificial intelligence, and global supply chains.
03:29But this meeting opens with clear disagreements between Washington
03:33and several European allies over the war in Iran, NATO, and U.S. foreign policy.
03:43Protests broke out in Geneva over the weekend ahead of the summit,
03:46while Macron spent Sunday meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney
03:50in a push to coordinate positions before leaders sit down together.
03:54Trump is expected to hold both group and one-on-one meetings throughout the week,
03:58with the possibility that events in the Middle East could quickly overtake everything else on the agenda.
04:04Russia unleashed one of its largest air attacks of the war overnight,
04:09hitting multiple Ukrainian cities and killing civilians as well as emergency responders.
04:14Ukraine's Air Force says Russia fired 70 missiles and more than 600 drones
04:19in a wide-ranging assault targeting Kiev, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.
04:24At least four people were killed and more than 30 injured.
04:27Strikes damaged apartment buildings, a market, and a grocery store.
04:31A fire also broke out at a UNESCO-listed monastery complex in Kiev,
04:36one of Ukraine's most important religious sites.
04:39In Kharkiv, officials say Russian forces used a so-called double-tap attack,
04:45hitting the same area again after emergency crews arrived to help victims of an earlier strike.
04:50Four emergency workers and an employee of the city's emergency department were killed.
04:55Dnipro also reported damage to a college, cultural sites, and other civilian infrastructure.
05:01Russia's defense ministry said the attack targeted military industrial facilities,
05:06conscription offices, and air bases, adding that all intended targets were hit.
05:12Back here in the U.S., this was just horrible.
05:14A skydiving trip in Missouri ended in tragedy Sunday when a plane carrying 12 people
05:20crashed moments after takeoff, killing everyone on board.
05:24Authorities say the single-engine turboprop took off from Butler Memorial Airport
05:29about an hour south of Kansas City just before 11.30 Sunday morning.
05:34Officials say the plane failed to gain altitude, made a sharp left turn,
05:38and went down in a field about 300 yards from the runway.
05:41You see the wreckage right there.
05:42Emergency crews found the aircraft engulfed in flames.
05:46The plane, operated by Skydive Kansas City, was carrying a pilot and 11 passengers.
05:52Officials say nine of those on board were experienced skydivers,
05:56while two were preparing for tandem jumps.
05:59Investigators searched the area on foot and by drone to determine whether anyone managed
06:04to exit the aircraft before it crashed, but found no survivors.
06:08The cause of the disaster is still unknown.
06:10The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating.
06:15Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is in the hospital this morning,
06:20though his office is releasing few details about why.
06:23A spokesperson says the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was admitted Sunday morning
06:28and is receiving what his office called excellent care.
06:31No information has been released about his condition or what led to the hospital visit.
06:36The hospitalization comes after a series of well-publicized health issues in recent years,
06:42including several falls, a concussion, and multiple instances where McConnell briefly froze
06:48while speaking in public.
06:49More recently, he has been seen using a wheelchair at times and receiving assistance while walking.
06:55McConnell announced earlier this year that he will not seek re-election
06:58and is expected to leave the Senate when his term ends next January.
07:02For now, his office says only that he remains under care at the hospital.
07:07He is currently one of the three oldest members of Congress,
07:10alongside Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
07:15Finally this morning, President Trump celebrated his 80th birthday in a way only he could
07:21with a UFC fight night on the White House South Lawn.
07:25The night started with a joint flyover from the Navy Blue Angels and Air Force Thunderbirds
07:30as thousands gathered on the South Lawn for the made-for-TV spectacle.
07:35Trump arrived with UFC President Dana White and received a rock star welcome
07:40as he made his way to a temporary octagon built on the White House grounds.
07:44The event was part of the kickoff to America's 250th birthday celebration
07:48and doubled as a birthday party for the president, who turned 80 on Sunday.
07:53Several thousand people packed the custom-built arena to watch a full card of UFC bouts
07:58with Trump sitting ringside throughout the night.
08:01The action finally wrapped up after 1 a.m. Eastern with fireworks over the White House.
08:06Afterwards, White House spokesperson Allison Schuster called it
08:10one of the most entertaining nights in American history.
08:13Wow, what a weekend it was for sports, right?
08:16The Knicks won the NBA title on Saturday night.
08:19The Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup on Sunday.
08:21The U.S. won in soccer in the World Cup.
