00:07I got there, I saw the body of laying there on the ground, next to the deer stand.
00:12This was some type of execution. It was up close, it was personal.
00:20There was no indication as to who would have done this.
00:24I knew that my work was cut out, because we had nothing.
00:29It was a Hail Mary time.
00:32After 11 years, Ranger Holland knocked on my door, and he said,
00:37we're gonna go downtown to speak.
00:41Then what happens?
00:43He looked at me, and he said, bitch, you better go get that car.
00:48I thought I was gonna go to prison.
00:59I thought I didn't know that the gun was down in a gate.
01:02It's not happening.
01:06We did not have a gun.
01:06You got to don't have a gun.
01:08When you got a gun.
01:13You got to go, man, you got to go.
01:14You got to go.
01:14You got to go.
01:14You got to go, man.
01:15You got to go.
01:15You got to go.
01:18You got to go.
01:27I was sitting in my office, and I got a phone call from a lady who identified herself as
01:31Gail Thompson.
01:33Well, first I said, you don't know me, but I saw your name in the Longview News Journal
01:39on a cold case.
01:40My son was murdered in 2006, and I'm wondering if you can help me.
01:45It's 11 years later, and there was no leads.
01:49The woman is in a lot of pain.
01:50She wants answers.
01:52I said, I thought maybe you could help.
01:55He said, what made you call me?
01:58It was kind of a weird deal to get a phone call from a victim's parent.
02:02I try to avoid getting too close to the family members.
02:07Sounds cold, but I really work hard at keeping myself in that non-emotional robotic state.
02:15But, you know, I was so touched by Gail.
02:18Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
02:20You know, that's just the way it is.
02:24He said, okay, I'm on it.
02:39I was at work as an investigator, and I had got a call that there was a young man that
02:46was on a four-wheeler, and he was riding out in the county, and that he had come across
02:52a dead body next to a deer stand.
02:57I got there, and the scene was already taped off.
03:02I saw the body laying there on the ground next to the deer stand.
03:09The victim's hands were in his pockets, and being shot in the back of the head with a
03:15shotgun.
03:16This was some type of execution.
03:19This was a cold-blooded, heinous murder.
03:24It was up close, it was personal, and it was just cold.
03:33The victim had two forms of ID, and it was identified as 20-year-old Joseph Michael Douglas.
03:43My son Joe took an IQ test in school, and he scored so high, they placed him in Mensa.
03:50So that meant that he was smarter than his mama, and he tried to outsmart her every time
03:55he could.
03:57He had a big brain, but he didn't know how to use it.
04:00He didn't know how to channel that, and I was no elf.
04:04In 2006, Joe wasn't keeping in touch with me like I thought he should.
04:11It was kind of like he was trying to keep stuff from me.
04:14He said, Mom, why are you worried about me?
04:18Well, because I'm not sure you're making the best decisions all the time.
04:24And then, no communication, not hearing.
04:29So I'm calling these friends who I don't even know.
04:32Anybody seen Joe?
04:33No, no something.
04:35We haven't seen him this week.
04:38At the end, I get the call.
04:41Miss Thompson, could you come meet us at the police station?
04:44We believe we found Joe there.
04:49We did not have a murder weapon at the scene.
04:53What stood out was Mickey's beer can, cigarette butts, and a spent .22 shell casing.
05:02A medical examiner determined he was not killed by .22.
05:05He was killed by something more akin to a .410 shotgun.
05:10But that is not very much evidence.
05:13So there's a lot of speculation as to how these things end up out there and whether they have any
05:19connection.
05:19So from that point of view, you had a body that had been out in the woods for some considerable
05:26length of time.
05:26We don't know exactly how long, and then you had these objects.
05:31None of these objects necessarily connect to each other, and there was no indication of one as to who would
05:37have done this.
05:38But then there was no indication as to why he would be murdered like this.
05:43So it was puzzling more than anything else.
05:49I knew that my work was cut out because we had nothing.
05:53I need witnesses.
05:54I need to know who was the last person that saw Joseph.
06:09Once it hit the local news, we received calls from some of Joseph's acquaintances, and it was learned that the
06:17last person that Joseph was with was Jarrett Murray.
06:22Joe Douglas was living with Jarrett Murray and his wife, Lisa.
06:29I got a call from one of Joe's friends saying that he was found shot dead.
06:35I was terrified.
06:38I met Joe through Jarrett.
06:42Jarrett came home one morning with Joe and said he's going to stay with us for a little while because
06:49we didn't allow hard drugs in our home.
06:54And Joe was trying to get away from the hard drugs, which is why he was coming to our house.
07:01Joe told me he was going to stay with them because he was trying to get himself straightened up.
07:04And I was like, okay, fine by me.
07:08He was a happy person, always ready to smile, ready to laugh.
07:13He struck me as innately good.
07:16He didn't have a mean bone in his body.
07:19I don't think I ever heard him say a bad word about anybody.
07:25Joe had two kids.
07:28That's one thing that made it so hard.
07:31When he did talk about his kids, you could tell he really loved them.
07:36He always got a look on his face.
07:37I wish he had gotten a chance to be a father to his kids.
07:41I would have liked to have seen that.
07:43I think he would have been a good one.
07:53We went to go speak with Jarrett.
07:56We pull up to the house.
07:58We walk up to the front door, ask for Jarrett.
08:02He's there.
08:02And it was obvious that he did not like police officers.
08:08He was cursing and, you know, talking about he's already done time and he did not trust police officers.
08:17When we asked him about Joseph, he had made mention the last time he had saw Joseph was, you know,
08:25a day or two ago.
08:28Jarrett had picked Joseph up and he went and bought him a Mickey's beer.
08:35And they rode around for a little while.
08:41And then also that he had left with some unknown woman.
08:47Jarrett woke me up.
08:48It was very early in the morning and told me that the cops were here.
08:52And to go out and talk to him.
08:57We told the police that Joe had left the house with an unknown woman with brunette hair.
09:11In 2006, investigators tracked down this mystery woman.
09:15And they're actually able to put her to being involved romantically with Joseph Douglas.
09:21The problem was, about the time that Joseph Douglas disappeared, she had a solid alibi.
09:29They just slammed into a brick wall.
09:33Miss Thompson, she wanted to know what happened to her son.
09:37I was not going to give up.
09:41I was going to work harder.
09:44Who was the last person that saw Joseph?
09:49Well, we've got two people in this scenario that were living with Joe at the time, that he disappeared.
09:55They are the key to this whole puzzle.
10:07In 2017, I got a phone call from Gail Thompson.
10:11She said that her son, Joe Douglas, had been murdered in 2006, and she asked for my help.
10:18I reached out to the investigator who originally worked the case, which was Charles Helton.
10:25Ranger Holland.
10:26He was a breath of fresh air.
10:29We clicked.
10:32I ended up giving some details and what I knew about the case.
10:47Joseph had a lot of friends.
10:50There was a lot of people interviewed.
10:53They had mentioned this young lady named Shelby.
10:58We talked to Shelby.
10:59She gave us information about what she was told by Lisa and Jared, who had allowed Joseph to live with
11:07them about Joseph's murder.
11:10That Joseph was shot in the back of the head.
11:16Information that no one would know other than the killer.
11:21That gave us enough to get an arrest warrant for both Jared and Lisa Murr.
11:29The charges was murder.
11:31The first arrest was Jared.
11:34When we arrested Lisa, she was at work at a gas station.
11:40But there was still a lot of work that needed to be done.
11:43We needed more than what we had.
11:46The cops made it clear that they thought I was with him on it and that I was just as
11:55guilty.
11:57That jail was absolutely horrible.
12:00They thought that this would lead to Lisa turning on Jared Murray or vice versa.
12:10Both Lisa and Jared just refused to talk.
12:16While they were in jail, Texas Department Public Safety Laboratory System also was running those cigarette butts in that Mickey's
12:24beer can, trying to develop some connection to either one of them, either through fingerprints, DNA, and ultimately they were
12:33not able to.
12:37When we got those results, of course it was a blow.
12:43The evidence was just not legally sufficient to support a murder conviction.
12:49Texas has a speedy trial riot act.
12:53After 90 days, defendants are released from custody if an indictment has not been obtained.
13:03They ended up dropping charges on both of us.
13:09They called and they said, Ms. Thompson, we had to release the Murrays and I said, why did you do
13:16that? None of the evidence matched up.
13:22But somehow you have to focus your mind enough to, is there anything I can do?
13:28They put together a pretty good circumstantial case, definitely enough for an arrest warrant.
13:34But making an arrest and going to trial and winning a conviction are two different things.
13:44First name, Chris.
13:472009, there was an inmate incarcerated by the name of Chris.
13:51You have agreed to talk to us about what you might know in this particular murder.
13:56Yes, sir.
13:57Who had come forward stating that he knew something about the Joseph Douglas murder.
14:02Of course, the reaction is, he needs to be talked to.
14:07Jerry had come to the house and he's like, man, I got to get rid of this.
14:11He opened the trunk and showed me a Moss Berger 410 pump-action shotgun.
14:18The weapon that he had described was a 410.
14:21The waddings that they had obtained during the autopsy was that of a 410.
14:26So nobody knew that.
14:28So we drove out to a place that I knew, took my shirt off and I wrapped my shirt around
14:33his gun, and I threw it in the water.
14:37Chris may seem like the Holy Grail.
14:39The problem is, he's not the person that you can always believe.
14:42It's someone who's in a jam, in jail, and is trying to get out of jail.
14:50I took Chris out of jail that day and got him to show us the location as to where that
14:56gun was throwing.
14:57From 42 South to the entrance of the location is going to be 0.7 miles.
15:12He went right to the location. He did not hesitate.
15:24We had a creek that was probably about six to eight feet wide and about five to six feet deep
15:31that needed to be searched.
15:36Can a jailhouse informant be the key to breaking a case?
15:40Absolutely. But you have to corroborate what they say.
15:46Time is 11.37 a.m. April 10th.
15:49West County Sheriff's Office, Rescue Unit, still searching for the weapon in Johnson Creek.
15:55We were there, you know, well over seven, eight hours looking for this gun.
16:09But we never found it.
16:12You better come my way.
16:19Gail, she never for a moment gave up on trying to get justice for Joe.
16:27Poor Mr. Helton, Charles Helton.
16:30I would call him every month and I could tell he was just dreading my call.
16:35He'd say, Miss Thompson, I don't have anything new to tell you.
16:40I'd say, that's okay. I'll call you next month.
16:48Just like any parent, Miss Thompson wanted to know what happened to her son.
16:53It was a big case. And it was my case.
16:57And it was my duty to solve it.
17:00Every year rolled around, I knew that that was Joseph's birthday.
17:05Gail was not giving up.
17:06She had not forgotten about her son.
17:09And she wasn't going away.
17:11You just can't ever give up.
17:13You just cannot ever give up.
17:15Because that's your baby.
17:17My heart just went out for Miss Thompson.
17:20That case weighed on me.
17:22It did.
17:40Ranger Holland came in quite a bit later when it was clear we'd reached the point this was a cold
17:46case.
17:48So when I dig into this thing, when I talked to Charles Helton, he knew the case inside out.
17:54And from the get go, he broke it down to me.
17:57He said, I feel like I know who committed this murder.
17:59And I think that the weak link is the suspect's wife.
18:05Lisa Murray is Jared Murray's weak link.
18:09It's where he's vulnerable.
18:13Specifically now because her and Jared are now divorced.
18:18Perfect scenario to get in there and see what we can find out from her.
18:24I was talking with Jim about Lisa Murray.
18:27He says, hey, we've located her.
18:28She's out in El Paso.
18:30Let's make a road trip.
18:40The idea was I would hit her up at her doorsteps before she left for work that day.
18:48As I'm getting out of my truck and I'm walking up the driveway, I'm really wondering if today's going to
18:58be a game changer.
19:11For 11 years, Joseph Douglas' murder has gone unsolved.
19:16Joe's mother is counting on me to deliver justice.
19:20I know that the only way to get it is through the woman that lives here.
19:24I knock on the door.
19:27Lisa's dad answers.
19:28And I ask for Lisa.
19:30Her dad says she's in Ohio.
19:35You know, cut like a knife.
19:38But I am a believer in take lemons and turn them into lemonade.
19:45I reached out to her by telephone.
19:48Hello, Lisa.
19:50Yes.
19:51Hey, it's Jim Holland with the Texas Rangers.
19:53How are you doing today?
19:55After 11 years, I got a phone call from Ranger Jim Holland.
20:02And tell me what you remember about the last time that you saw Joseph.
20:10The last time I saw Joseph, he walked through the kitchen door into the living room.
20:15And I saw some brunette girl standing there.
20:21And he walked out with her, said to see you later, and we didn't see him again.
20:28She basically wraps to the same story.
20:30And I told her, I know that you're not telling the truth.
20:35And I'm not going to go away until you do.
20:38There's a lot of storage I remember anymore.
20:40I'll guarantee you this, until we sit down and visit, and you get this thing off your back, off your
20:45shoulders, you're going to be thinking about it nonstop.
20:48Can I tell you something, Lisa?
20:50You may find this hard to believe, but I'm never wrong.
21:05I don't believe it's unfair to characterize it as a Hail Mary time.
21:11Jared Murray is a intimidating figure.
21:16And so it would be difficult for Lisa to give evidence against him.
21:24Jim had set up a day and time to speak with me.
21:32I was in agony.
21:34I didn't sleep a wink.
21:35I paced around my house.
21:36I cried.
21:37I stared at my son, sleeping in bed, thinking I'd never see him again.
21:42I thought I was going to go to prison.
21:48He knocked on my door, and he said, we're going to go downtown to speak.
21:55I calmed myself down and composed myself, and I went out to his truck.
22:04And I got the truck.
22:09The game plan is to get her in the front right seat of my truck and to drive and build
22:15rapport.
22:17She's had two weeks to think about this.
22:20Her head's about ready to explode.
22:22She wants to talk about the murder of Joseph Douglas.
22:25And we're not talking about that until I'm ready.
22:29I'm going to push it to the very, very limit, and then I'm going to open the release valve.
22:40April 2006, what's going on in your life?
22:43Who are you married to, and where are you living at?
22:45I'm married to Jarrett Reese Murray.
22:48And we are living at my grandmother's home.
22:52What's home life like?
22:53He physically put his hands on me twice.
22:57He was drunk.
22:58You're afraid of this guy.
23:00Is that right?
23:01Oh, yeah.
23:02She was deathly afraid of him.
23:07The fear of her husband that had stopped her from talking.
23:12But, you know, she'd been arrested for this murder.
23:17And there was also the fear of going back to jail.
23:22One of the things that Ranger Holland wanted me to do was to give him a letter stating that the
23:29statute of limitations on a lot of possible crimes, like tampering with physical evidence, had expired.
23:36I showed you a letter that was from the district attorney in Rucks County.
23:40Do you remember what that letter said?
23:42Yes.
23:43I was always a little concerned about the idea.
23:46I would not want to discover that she was more involved in the murder than I believed, and now I
23:53had made it impossible to prosecute her.
23:56But Ranger Holland was very certain that that was what it was going to take to get her to talk
24:02about the case.
24:03I didn't want anything to stop you from telling the truth today.
24:07I believe this is the only time I've ever done that.
24:12How long have you known or did you know Joseph?
24:15Maybe a couple months.
24:17Is there a point in time that he ends up moving in with you?
24:20Yes.
24:21When does that happen?
24:22Sometime in April.
24:23And he was getting along with Jerry pretty good?
24:25Yeah.
24:26Obviously, we're here for a reason.
24:28When does all that change?
24:31I think I worked that night.
24:34When I got home, I went to sleep.
24:35And then I got woken up by Jared.
24:40He leaned down to me and said, I'm finna kill Joe.
24:45And what happens next?
24:47I went in the living room and Joe was sitting on the couch.
24:53And I sat down next to him and I said, what the is going on?
24:58Joe said, it's him or me.
24:59I said, what the does that mean?
25:03It's a crazy story.
25:04It's really nuts.
25:06And the way that she told it was kind of eerie.
25:12She really steps back into the moment and she brings herself into 2006.
25:18I know it's not a story.
25:20I know it's what she went through.
25:25She just had to get this off her shoulders.
25:27Her head was going to explode.
25:32Where was Jared at?
25:33He was in the garage.
25:36Okay, so Jared comes back in and then what happens?
25:38Jared says, let's go.
25:40And he looked at me and told me to come up.
25:46And I said, no.
25:49And he said, bitch, you better go get that car.
25:53And what happens next?
26:03It's been 11 years since Joe Douglas has been found dead.
26:08And we're finally starting to get some answers.
26:12Lisa Blythe is the same woman that was arrested in 2006 for the murder.
26:18She was too scared to talk then.
26:21And now she's our star witness.
26:28He said, bitch, you better go get that car.
26:31And I said, no.
26:34And I'm not going.
26:35He walked up to me about five inches from my face.
26:39And he had the shotgun in his hand and kind of, you know, the barrel up.
26:44So he points the shotgun at him?
26:45Yeah, pretty much.
26:46And he said, you bitch, you better keep your mouth shut.
26:51He said, you wait here for me to get back.
26:57And I just watched him walk out the door and drive out of the driveway.
27:08When traumatic things happen to people, they tend to have this really solid memory.
27:16Do you know whose shotgun it was?
27:19It used to be a friend of the family's.
27:22Okay.
27:23His father committed suicide with it.
27:27And he didn't want it, so he gave it to my mother.
27:31And what kind of shotgun was it?
27:33A 410.
27:36She gives us the origin of the shotgun.
27:39He opened the trunk and showed me a Mossberg 410 pump-action shotgun.
27:45I mean, the shotgun was, you know, the cherry on top of the whipped cream.
27:50This was going to be a tool that I was going to use to fill in a lot of gray
27:55areas.
27:57What happens next?
27:59Pretty much cried myself to sleep.
28:02And Jared came into the room and woke me up again.
28:04And he said, it's done.
28:07And I just started crying.
28:11Because I couldn't believe it.
28:15He said he made Joe turn around.
28:19And he pointed the gun at his head and pulled the trigger.
28:24Lisa has pertinent details that no one could make up.
28:28Lisa's telling the truth.
28:30You can see the weight being lifted off of her.
28:34And it's a major, major advancement for the case.
28:40We actually had a warrant for Jarrett's arrest.
28:43So, pull up to the house and arrest Jarrett Murray.
28:46In fact, I was on the phone with him.
28:50Jim asked me if I could maybe get him speaking.
28:54You know, what's going on?
28:55Why are they talking about this again?
28:58And I acted surprised.
28:59But he just hung up.
29:02He knew what it was about.
29:03But he knew he had also been arrested before.
29:06And walked away from it.
29:08So, I think he was ready to kind of play the game and see,
29:11Hey, I've got out of this one time.
29:13Can I do it again?
29:19Hey, Jarrett, if you're cool with it, we're going to take those cuffs off.
29:23I'm going to treat him with respect.
29:26I'm going to play up that I'm the cop who's different.
29:29You're under arrest for the murder of Joseph Douglas.
29:31Joseph Michael Douglas, yes.
29:32Yeah.
29:32Okay.
29:36Been arrested for it before.
29:38He's very comfortable in the interview room.
29:41He's been in a room like that so many times before.
29:43Granted, he hasn't been in the room like that with me.
29:46With my position comes a lot of money from the governor's office.
29:50And so we can retest things, new forensics and all that kind of stuff.
29:53Do you know much about guns or not?
29:55I'll shoot for them.
29:57The shotgun was going to be my play.
30:02But I pull out all the reports.
30:04I pull out the autopsy report.
30:06I pull out the firearms and tool marking report.
30:10And I put all these things in front of them.
30:13When I start digging into this, and I find this shotgun wadding from this autopsy.
30:19This is actually a pretty simple case because the gun that kills this man when he commits suicide matches the
30:27same wadding exactly to a tee that came out of Joseph Douglas's head.
30:37Would you agree that if I can put this shotgun in someone's hand, I have solved this case?
30:44Sounds like, yeah.
30:45As much as he wants to ask me more questions about that.
30:49He can't because he knows if he does, he's going to tip his hat, which is beautiful for me because
30:54we're just leaving everything in the gray.
30:56And I know that he's convinced I've matched up these two shotguns.
31:00Oh, I understand. So, so, so you can, you trace the gun to the house that me, that I lived
31:04in.
31:04That you lived in.
31:08Now, I hit him with the whammy.
31:10Lisa, his ex-wife, has provided all the information.
31:15You still have this perfect person out there, right?
31:19The mother of your child.
31:21Lisa.
31:23Because that's your alibi.
31:24And that's the only thing that was keeping out of jail then.
31:29And so I drive to El Paso, not once, but twice.
31:32And I go visit with her.
31:35And she tells me exactly what happened.
31:38She said, you said that you're going to kill Joe.
31:43And she said that you came out of the garage with a 410 shotgun, the same shotgun.
31:47She said that you got in the car and left with Joe.
31:50She said you came a little bit later, kind of hysterical, and basically said I did it.
31:54I did it. I killed him.
32:01He believed that he controlled her to such a degree that she would never turn on him.
32:10And so he realizes right then and there that what he thought would never happen, happened.
32:15I'm sorry that the boy is dead. I miss him. But I didn't kill him.
32:19This is a guy who's overconfident, thought he was a lot smarter than he was.
32:27You know, if you offer me five years on probation, then you might, I might give you some closure.
32:33But I'd just be copping to something so you can clear your case.
32:35Yeah, I'm not an offer.
32:38No, I'm just saying that's the God's honest truth.
32:42You definitely don't go from, you know, a hundred miles an hour of, I didn't do it, I didn't do
32:47it, I'm innocent, to, but I'd take five.
32:51Yeah, we're going in the right direction.
32:53I didn't do it.
32:55There wasn't much doubt in my mind that this was a guy who was going to have to let things
33:00sink in a little bit, and then you're going to have to go back at him.
33:05I'm going to make him think about this.
33:08I still think you'll make a smart decision, because I think you're too smart not to.
33:12I do know that he's a smart person, and I'm going to use his intelligence against him.
33:24So a couple days later, Jared says he wants to talk for a little bit, and I try round two
33:31out.
33:44What keeps him talking is his quest for information to know exactly how we have him, so he can figure
33:53out a game plan to beat it.
33:56If I was to tell you that I was an eyewitness, just hypothetically speaking now, there would have to be
34:09some sort of deal with that, right?
34:14Jared Murray is throwing out the possibility of another actor, you know, him being a witness and him providing information.
34:21But he's not actually naming the person.
34:25He's inferring who he is, which is going to be, you know, Chris, the jailhouse informant.
34:29Really, it's a desperation move.
34:32What I'm telling you is if you have something to say about this guy, I will run on that like
34:38a wild dog.
34:39I understand, man. I still have to work some things up in my own head.
34:43So to push this position, his line of bullshit, even more, I offer to show him Chris's interview.
34:53This is Chris interviewing him.
34:57Christ.
35:09It's been 11 years since Joe Douglas was murdered.
35:14We're much farther than we were in 2006.
35:17Lisa's statement was huge, but even she wasn't there when Joe was shot.
35:22We still need Jared to admit that he killed Joe with intent.
35:33So this is Chris interviewing him.
35:35Jared comes in. He was drunk.
35:38I need your help. I need your help. I need your help.
35:40I need your help.
35:40I need to get rid of his gun. I need to get rid of his gun.
35:42So I take him out there, the back 40, and we're throwing the gun away.
35:49So is Chris lying?
35:51Yeah, yeah, out of his ass.
35:54All the way out of his ass. Yeah, that is happening.
35:58If Chris committed this murder, then tell me and let me proceed with that.
36:04Jared throwing out the possibility of another actor is most definitely a crack in his armor.
36:09It's the wounded animal who's stuck in the corner, and he's really trying to figure a way out of his
36:14jam.
36:15I can't do that today. I can't do that for you today.
36:18You can't do that because it didn't happen or because you're not willing?
36:21I'm not willing to make any statement today.
36:24You understand what I'm saying?
36:27This is bullshit. And what this tells me is we're getting really close.
36:32You're the only one who can find this thing.
36:39I just felt like the longer I spoke with him, the more he would wear down.
36:45And giving him a reason to like me enough to tell me the truth.
36:52You want to smoke? Hell yeah.
36:54What better way to get to know them and get them to like you than, you know, smoke a cigarette
36:59and eat a chicken sandwich.
37:01I went and got something to eat.
37:04I get a phone call, ended up bringing Jared something back to eat.
37:09Jim and Jared had walked down in front of the jail, and I had come back and I gave him
37:14a sandwich.
37:16Jared and I just throughout the years, we had formed a rapport.
37:20I remember telling him, you know, let's, let's go ahead and get this over with.
37:30Explain to me what happened, how things went down.
37:34Man, I haven't thought about this in over 10 years.
37:39There was some issue about, I guess, a dog or, man, I don't, I honestly don't know.
37:47I knew exactly why.
37:50There was this drug dealer in Kilgore, Texas.
37:56And one night, some mess came up missing from his home.
38:02And so did a boxer puppy.
38:06And Jared is the one that took the boxer puppy.
38:10Joe saw him with the puppy.
38:13He knew it was this drug dealer's dog.
38:17So Jared was afraid that Joe was going to tell this drug dealer that Jared stole his dog.
38:24And that this drug dealer would come after him.
38:27I remember going out to the country, though, with him in the car.
38:33I don't know why the gun ended up in the car.
38:37I might have dared him to shoot me at that point.
38:42It was just stupid, acting like teenagers.
38:48And we went out there and, I don't know, he drank some beers and smoked some weed.
38:56A gun got shot.
38:59And he got shot.
39:02And I panicked.
39:07And I don't know.
39:10That's the best I can get.
39:11I honestly don't remember.
39:18I think it made him feel powerful.
39:21His idol was Scarface.
39:25It took him 11 years of wine and 10 minutes to confess.
39:30Was it 100% detailed?
39:33No.
39:34It was self-serving.
39:36But it was what we needed.
39:39And it got the job done.
39:47I was mad about it.
39:50I said, so Joe lived 20 years, 21 years.
39:54And that's all his life is worth because all we're talking about is 20 years.
40:00But something is better than nothing.
40:03That's how I felt then.
40:04That's how I still feel.
40:08If it hadn't been for the skill of Ranger Holland, we wouldn't have got there.
40:13Ranger Holland came in and did what a Texas Ranger is supposed to do.
40:17All I needed was somebody to tell me that I was okay, that I was safe,
40:23that I would not have to pay for Jared's mistakes.
40:27I have never regretted talking to Jim Holland.
40:30And I never will.
40:32I just wish I had talked to him sooner.
40:36I'm confident that Joe's case would not have been solved without Ranger Holland.
40:44Joe's just a punk kid.
40:46But he was my kid.
40:48And it mattered to me, but I didn't think it mattered to anybody else.
40:52I'm glad to see you again.
40:56Ranger Holland said, Miss Thompson, it matters.
40:59He mattered.
41:00I didn't know when Gail called me where this case would go.
41:05But I knew I was going to do my best to help this woman.
41:10I felt like she deserved it.
41:18Don't even think about it.
41:20Change that.
41:21We have our kidnapping of an innocent woman.
41:24I didn't do it.
41:25I let her go.
41:27It's something that I'll never forget.
41:29Be honest with me.
41:31We're driving out here to find this girl.
41:33We're driving out here to find a body.
