00:06My sister has been missing for almost five days now.
00:10She's got a 13-year-old daughter, and we are worth six.
00:14There was more to this than just a missing person's case.
00:18There's no way she's not leaving her daughter.
00:22That was very concerning to me.
00:24We're certain that some type of foul play has been involved.
00:28CCTV played a massive role in this case.
00:31We knew that they were lying because of the CCTV.
00:35All I want to do is find her,
00:36and I want to give you a chance to dig yourself out of the hole.
01:0837-year-old Marilee Cox Lafferty prepares for a 900-mile road trip
01:13from her home in California to Utah.
01:16I met Marilee when we were teenagers.
01:19We went to a counseling group together.
01:21She was a misfit, and she was funny, and she was hardworking.
01:28Marilee hopes to rekindle a romance with an old flame.
01:31I knew the person that she was seeing was Rob Willis.
01:35She had known him since she was very young, about 16.
01:41Honey, are you ready?
01:44Marilee's 13-year-old daughter, Shana, is coming with her.
01:47They sure were always together.
01:50Very rarely were they separated.
01:53She was a really good mom.
01:57Marilee wants to build a better future for herself
01:59after a lifetime of challenges.
02:02Over the years, Marilee struggled with a bunch of battles.
02:06She was very open about them as well.
02:08She struggled with anxiety and depression and addiction.
02:13She was a severe alcoholic.
02:15They said that she would have died if she wouldn't quit drinking.
02:19From that point on, after she went through recovery,
02:22I was so proud of Marilee when she had done the work
02:25that she needed to do to get sober.
02:27That's a good girl.
02:28Come on.
02:29Her service dog, Coco, will be traveling by her side.
02:33She was epileptic.
02:34She would black out and have full-on grand mal seizures.
02:38They had her on a lot of different medications.
02:42So she got Coco a dog that could help
02:44if something happened to her.
02:47Marilee was just trying to figure out
02:49how she could both live with this condition
02:52and also be the sole provider for her daughter.
02:56That was her number one priority.
03:21The person that reported Marilee missing
03:24was her friend who she referred to as kind of her sister.
03:28Her name is Shawnee.
03:29Does she live here, or...?
03:31No, she lives in California.
03:33She was visiting friends there in Logan, Utah.
03:36I don't know the address.
03:37And you don't know what she was doing here?
03:39She was helping a friend move.
03:41Her friend brought her daughter to me in Idaho.
03:45Shawnee reported that Marilee had a daughter
03:48that had been taken to Shawnee by Rob Willis.
03:52Shawnee was worried about Marilee
03:54because she had a past with alcohol and drugs,
03:58and she was worried that Marilee had relapsed.
04:04We've got missing persons.
04:06When this was passed to Logan PD,
04:08this was given to me to be the lead investigator
04:11into the missing persons case for Marilee Cox Lafferty.
04:13We have somebody that's possibly under the influence
04:17and driving a vehicle on the roadways.
04:20We entered Marilee into a nationwide database
04:24for missing persons.
04:25Same thing for her vehicle.
04:27A gold Toyota Camry with California license plates.
04:32We're going to need to get statements from the family.
04:36Detectives speak with Marilee's brother, Daryl,
04:39to get more information.
04:41I had spoken with Shawnee.
04:43She said that Rob and Marilee had an argument.
04:47She had taken a handful of Klonopin and Moonshine
04:50and left in her car, left her daughter and everything.
04:57She would never run off like this.
04:59I immediately felt like there was more to this
05:02than just a missing persons case.
05:05We had heard that Marilee had taken some drugs and alcohol
05:09and just disappeared.
05:11Marilee had reportedly been sober for nine years.
05:15After rehab, she never touched anything ever again.
05:19There's no way.
05:20She's not grabbing a bottle,
05:22and she's not leaving her daughter.
05:24She was very protective of her.
05:27Okay. Thank you for your time.
05:30The thing that really stuck out to me initially
05:32was that her daughter was left behind.
05:34That didn't make a lot of sense to me.
05:37That was very concerning to me.
05:40Investigators focused next on the man
05:42Marilee drove to Utah to visit, Rob Willis.
05:46Marilee had come from California with her daughter
05:49to visit Rob Willis here in Hiram,
05:52which is a town just south of Logan.
05:54Detective Woods, you Rob Willis.
05:57That's me.
05:59Rob told us that Marilee had come
06:01to help him move stuff into his new house.
06:04He said that she had been there
06:05on August 17th and August 18th.
06:08She had her daughter with her and her dog.
06:12At some point, they got into an argument
06:14about their relationship.
06:16Rob said that Marilee wanted to be intimate with him,
06:19and he declined.
06:21He and Marilee had been arguing all night,
06:24and the argument continued in the morning.
06:27They went to Shane's house
06:29where they dropped off Marilee's daughter.
06:32Who is Shane?
06:33Rob tells detectives that Shane Miles
06:35is his friend and co-worker.
06:38The argument that happened between he and Marilee
06:40was outside Shane's apartment in the parking lot.
06:44Marilee had reportedly threatened
06:46to drink a bunch of alcohol
06:48and take her medication in order to end her life.
06:52He said Marilee was very angry.
06:54She was yelling at him.
06:55Rob and Shane had to go to work,
06:57and they were going to be late, so they left.
06:59Whose car did you leave in?
07:01Mine.
07:01It's right there.
07:02And they both left for work in Rob's vehicle,
07:05which is a green Isuzu trooper.
07:08Rob says he believed that Marilee,
07:10her daughter and Coco,
07:12would be gone by the time he and Shane
07:14returned from work.
07:15After he left Marilee,
07:17he clocked into work at 3.42 p.m.,
07:20and he was at work until he got off later that night
07:23around midnight.
07:25Rob states that he kept getting text messages from her
07:28that were of a harassing nature
07:30because she was so angry with him.
07:33When they went back to Shane's house,
07:35Marilee's vehicle was gone,
07:36but Marilee's daughter was there at Shane's apartment.
07:39They were both very surprised
07:41that Marilee's daughter was still there.
07:43The day after Marilee's disappearance on August 19th,
07:47Rob took Marilee's daughter up to Idaho
07:50to be with Shani.
07:58Look at this.
08:00And we noticed that the back window on Rob's vehicle
08:03on the driver's side had been broken.
08:05It had glass in the back of the vehicle still,
08:08but it was kind of like he had covered it
08:10with some plastic sheeting.
08:12What happened to the car?
08:13He said he had backed into a tree while camping.
08:17It had happened after she disappeared.
08:19Okay.
08:20Thank you for your time.
08:26Investigators contact Rob's friend, Shane.
08:29He volunteers for an interview at the police department.
08:32It's very important that we speak with Shane
08:34to see what he has to tell us
08:36to compare that with what Rob is telling us.
08:39All right, Shane.
08:39So, obviously, the reason we're talking to you today
08:42is trying to find out what happened to her.
08:44Okay.
08:45I agree.
08:46Tell me what you know about her.
08:49So, I met her on Friday.
08:52She came with Rob.
08:54Shane had not met Marilee until she had come to Utah
08:57to visit with Rob.
08:59Second time she, when she comes, she stayed out in the car,
09:01but then she got out and she come to my door
09:04and just holler, just weird crap, like, you know,
09:08F you this, F you that.
09:09And when was this?
09:10This was Saturday.
09:12The last time when she come to my house,
09:14she was on, she was outside yelling.
09:16Shane told me that he had told Rob
09:18that she can't be acting like that
09:19because he'll get in trouble with his landlord
09:21and the neighbors.
09:22They both stated that the last time they saw her
09:25was in the parking lot outside Shane's house
09:27and that they went to work in Rob's green,
09:30as who's a trooper.
09:31Should you go together?
09:32Yeah.
09:33Did you see Marilee leave?
09:35No, I was in the house.
09:37His story matched Rob's.
09:40Investigators contact hospitals
09:41and local law enforcement
09:43to check if Marilee is receiving treatment
09:45or in custody.
09:47We found that Marilee had not been
09:49to any hospitals in the area
09:50and based on what we could see,
09:53she had not been arrested anywhere in the country.
09:56So we generated a missing persons flyer
09:58that we posted on our Logan City Police Department
10:01social media.
10:07Detective Woods.
10:08I received a phone call from one of our lieutenants.
10:12Somebody had located a dog
10:14that was wandering around Logan City.
10:17And they started getting messages
10:19from Marilee's family members
10:21that this dog that we had collected
10:23on the 18th of August was Marilee's dog, Coco.
10:26That was concerning because her family reported
10:29that Marilee would never leave her dog.
10:31That dog was always by her side.
10:33Where exactly did you say you found the dog?
10:36That this dog that we had collected
10:38was found at TTM Technologies.
10:41TTM Technologies is a company
10:43that manufactures electronic components.
10:45There's no real connection to Marilee.
10:53We went to TTM and we asked for a surveillance video.
10:56We knew the dog was on film
10:59at about 4.42 p.m.
11:02What we were hoping to find on this camera
11:04is how the dog got to TTM.
11:26Hold it.
11:27That's Coco.
11:30We first saw the dog on the camera
11:32at 4.42 p.m. on August 18th.
11:34The dog is just running around the parking lot
11:37like it was by itself.
11:39We know Marilee shouldn't have been far away from there,
11:42but it didn't seem like Marilee was close by
11:45based on the way the dog was acting.
11:51A little bit later,
11:53the person that had found the dog,
11:55we see them pull up in a vehicle,
11:57and then we see that person pick up the dog and leave.
12:03Investigators review the footage
12:04from TTM's other surveillance cameras
12:07to trace Coco's movements before she is found.
12:12At 4.24 p.m.,
12:14we see the dog sniffing around one of the exterior doors
12:17close up to the building.
12:19That again.
12:23We still haven't seen anything on camera besides the dog,
12:27and so we keep working backwards to see
12:29is there any more surveillance footage
12:30that might show something.
12:38We see somebody enter the frame
12:40wearing a dark shirt,
12:42walk towards the door,
12:43and someone follows right behind them
12:45wearing a white shirt.
12:46As they open the door and enter the building,
12:48they both kind of look back.
12:50You can see that it is both Shane and Rob
12:52that are on video.
12:56And then just seconds later
12:58is when we see the dog follow right behind them.
13:03TTM is where Shane, Miles, and Rob Willis worked.
13:06So it was not suspicious
13:07that we saw Rob and Shane
13:09on the camera footage there at work.
13:12But what was unusual
13:13is that Marilee's dog was also on video
13:15in proximity to them.
13:17That information was crucial.
13:19How was the dog located
13:22at the workplace for Rob and Shane
13:24when Rob had told us
13:26that the dog had gone with Marilee?
13:28We start to think
13:29maybe Rob and Shane
13:31know more information
13:32than the weather telling us
13:33and we need to keep looking into that.
13:36Both Rob and Shane told investigators
13:38they arrived at work shortly after 3.40 p.m.,
13:42one hour before Coco is found at TTM.
13:45They didn't leave work at all
13:47for the duration of their shift
13:48until sometime around midnight.
13:50The investigators review
13:52the TTM parking lot footage
13:54from 3.40 p.m.
13:56to pinpoint Rob and Shane's arrival.
14:02That's them.
14:04At 3.46, we see Shane and Rob
14:07walking through the parking lot
14:09towards the building.
14:10Roll backwards.
14:14We then want to see them
14:16enter the parking lot
14:18to see what vehicle they're in.
14:22So Rob and Shane had told us
14:24that they had come to work
14:25in Rob's green Asusa trooper.
14:28But we didn't see his vehicle.
14:31We jump back.
14:34At 3.46 p.m.,
14:36we see a black Ford Mustang.
14:39Can't be sure it's done.
14:41Is there a camera on the back lot?
14:45You can follow it on video
14:47through the parking lot
14:48all the way to the point
14:49to where they park.
14:51Play on.
14:59Freeze there.
15:01We could see Shane and Rob
15:03exit the Mustang.
15:06When we saw that
15:07they had arrived
15:07in Shane's Mustang
15:08and not in Rob's trooper,
15:10we weren't quite sure
15:11what to think of that.
15:12And so we needed
15:14to investigate that further.
15:15They both told us
15:16they were at work
15:17and didn't leave.
15:18So we want to watch
15:19and see if that's another thing
15:20that they're misleading us on.
15:22Fast forward.
15:23We carried on watching it
15:25because we knew
15:25the dog had arrived
15:27at that building.
15:40At 4.06 p.m.,
15:42we see them leave
15:43the parking lot
15:44driving Shane's vehicle.
15:46This directly contradicts
15:48what they both told us
15:49that they had never
15:49left work that day.
15:51And so we start to wonder
15:53where are they going?
15:56Approximately 20 minutes
15:57after they left work
15:58that afternoon,
15:59they arrive back
16:00in Shane's black Ford Mustang.
16:03They park in a different spot
16:05this time,
16:05and that spot is not
16:07actually on camera.
16:08So we're not able to see them
16:10exit the vehicle
16:11at that time.
16:12However,
16:13within seconds
16:14after parking,
16:15we do pick them up
16:16on surveillance again,
16:18walking on TTM property.
16:20But this time,
16:21the dog is within feet
16:23of them.
16:25It is very, very suspicious
16:27that they have the dog,
16:28but Marilee's nowhere
16:30to be seen.
16:31We have two people
16:32that know something
16:34that they're not telling us.
16:36We knew they were lying,
16:37and we knew that we
16:38had to build a case.
16:44On September 1st,
16:45we got some information
16:46back from Marilee's
16:47cell phone provider
16:48showing her
16:50most recent
16:50cell phone locations.
16:53What have we got?
16:55Can you pull that up
16:56on a map?
16:57One of the ping locations
16:58that we got on Marilee's
17:00cell phone
17:00was at 1.31 p.m.
17:02on August 18th,
17:04the day that she went missing.
17:05And it showed
17:06in the area
17:07of Blacksmith Fork Canyon,
17:08which is near Rob's residence.
17:11What about the later ping?
17:13One of the other
17:14cell phone ping locations
17:15we had on Marilee's
17:17cell phone
17:17was at 2.16 p.m.
17:20in the area
17:20of 1700 South,
17:22the U.S. 8991
17:23highway intersection,
17:25which is in Logan,
17:27near Shane's apartment.
17:29The second cell phone ping
17:31was suspicious to us
17:32because it was in the city
17:33where there is
17:34good cell phone service.
17:35It's possible
17:36that her phone
17:37could have died,
17:37but Rob also told us
17:39that she had been
17:39sending him text messages
17:41later in the day.
17:42And so the fact
17:43that 2.16 p.m.
17:45is her final cell phone ping
17:46is again another inconsistency
17:48with what Rob is telling us.
17:51It made us believe
17:52that something
17:52was seriously wrong
17:53with her.
17:55The feeling I had
17:57was something sinister
17:58happened.
17:59I believe Marilee
18:00was no longer alive.
18:07Our biggest lead
18:08at this time
18:09would be Rob and Shane.
18:10Up until that point,
18:12they've shown
18:12that they're not willing
18:13to tell us the truth.
18:14They're willing
18:14to mislead us
18:15on certain things.
18:16So we start
18:17to conduct surveillance
18:18on Shane and Rob.
18:21Investigators secure
18:22permission
18:23to attach
18:23a covert GPS tracker
18:25to Rob's vehicle.
18:27What we were hoping
18:28to obtain
18:28by placing the tracker
18:29on Rob's vehicle
18:30were his movements.
18:32Where was he going?
18:33Did he have somewhere
18:34that might lead us
18:35to Marilee?
18:37That's what we really
18:38wanted to know.
18:42On the evening
18:42of September 8th,
18:44I was contacted
18:45by our on-duty
18:46patrol supervisor.
18:48He informed me
18:49that Marilee's vehicle
18:51had been found
18:52in Boise, Idaho,
18:53near the airport.
18:55We did confirm
18:56that her vehicle
18:57was located
18:58at an extended stay
18:59hotel in Boise, Idaho,
19:01which from Logan, Utah
19:02is about a five
19:03or a six-hour drive.
19:05When I got that call,
19:07it was actually exhilarating
19:08because I knew
19:09that we had our vehicle.
19:10We had this huge piece
19:11of evidence
19:12we'd been looking for.
19:13Unfortunately,
19:14they did not have surveillance
19:15at their parking lot.
19:16So we don't know
19:17how the vehicle got there
19:18or who parked it there.
19:20Some of Marilee's family
19:22did live in Idaho,
19:23not too far
19:24from that area.
19:25And so we thought
19:26maybe she had driven
19:27up that way
19:28because she had family
19:29or friends up there
19:30that she wanted to visit.
19:31So we talked
19:32with Marilee's brother
19:33up in Idaho.
19:37When I heard
19:38that the vehicle
19:38was found,
19:39a tinge of hope
19:40kind of goes through you.
19:42Like, okay,
19:42maybe she was coming back.
19:45Is there any sign of her yet?
19:47But it didn't add up
19:49that she would go back
19:50to Boise.
19:50She would leave
19:51her daughter
19:51and her dog even
19:54and then also not try
19:56to get in contact
19:56with her family.
19:58No, I haven't heard
19:59from her at all.
20:00When she'd come
20:01to visit in town,
20:03she would visit everybody
20:04while she was here.
20:06No one had seen her.
20:07No one had talked to her.
20:11Investigators received data
20:12from the tracker
20:13they attached
20:14to Rob's vehicle.
20:15On September 7th,
20:17we saw that Rob
20:18took a trip in his vehicle
20:19up into the mountains.
20:21That was of interest to us
20:23because one of the last
20:25cell phone pings
20:26from Marilee's cell phone
20:27was near the base
20:29of one of the canyons.
20:31Marilee's been missing
20:32for over three weeks.
20:34We know there's been
20:35no movement
20:35on any of her records.
20:37The GPS information
20:39gave us that he was
20:39in the canyon
20:40for approximately three hours.
20:41It compelled us
20:43exactly everywhere he stopped.
20:45One of the locations
20:46where Rob had stopped
20:47at the longest,
20:48I think he was in that area
20:49for about 23 minutes.
20:52So following Rob's trip
20:54into the mountains,
20:54we took our own trip up there.
20:57We found broken glass
20:59that looked like it might have been
21:00from a vehicle window.
21:02Rob told us he'd gone
21:03on a camping trip
21:04after Marilee's disappearance
21:06into the mountains
21:07and that it was
21:07on that camping trip
21:08that his vehicle window
21:10got broken.
21:10And maybe it did happen
21:12after Marilee disappeared,
21:13but maybe it also had something
21:15to do with her disappearance
21:16and maybe this is where
21:17she was last seen.
21:19We went and thoroughly searched
21:21to see if we could find
21:22any sign of Marilee
21:23or any kind of evidence
21:25that would lead us
21:26to where she might be.
21:29Unfortunately, though,
21:30we found no evidence
21:31of Marilee.
21:33We know that her phone
21:35pinged outside
21:37Blacksmith Fort Canyon
21:38and then shortly after
21:40it pinged at 1700 South
21:42a known route
21:43that Rob used
21:44and that it never
21:45had activity again.
21:48One of the businesses
21:49along that route
21:50was a gas station
21:51that had surveillance cameras.
21:54Detectives secure CCTV footage
21:56from the gas station
21:57for August 18th.
21:59They review it
22:00at the police department.
22:04The camera angle
22:05that we obtained
22:06from Maverick
22:07mainly shows their parking lot
22:08and their gas pumps.
22:09But in the very top
22:10of the camera angle,
22:11you can see the highway 165.
22:14And so we're really only focused
22:16on that top part
22:17of the camera angle.
22:18It takes a lot of manpower
22:20to go through
22:21hours of video
22:22for what you end up
22:24finding is
22:25just small sections,
22:26maybe seconds
22:27or possibly minutes
22:29of video you actually need.
22:37At 10.50,
22:39we see Rob's Isuzu trooper
22:42travel south.
22:44The driver was wearing
22:46a white t-shirt,
22:47which is what Rob
22:48was wearing
22:48as he entered TTM
22:49to go to work
22:50later on that day.
22:52He's traveling
22:53towards Hiram.
22:54He lives in Hiram,
22:56so it's possible
22:56he's going towards his house,
22:58but he's also going
22:59towards the area
23:00near the mouth
23:01of Blacksmith Fork Canyon.
23:04We continue to scour
23:06the surveillance video
23:06for that morning.
23:13Jump back.
23:16At 2.13 p.m.,
23:18we see Rob's vehicle
23:19on the surveillance footage
23:20show up.
23:21This time,
23:22it's traveling north
23:23on Highway 165
23:24past the Maverick.
23:26Whether Marilee is
23:27in the vehicle or not,
23:28we don't know,
23:29but we don't see her vehicle
23:31at all
23:31in the surveillance footage.
23:33We know that
23:34Marilee's cell phone
23:35pinged at 2.16
23:36about three minutes
23:37north of where
23:38we saw his vehicle
23:39on surveillance.
23:40We know that
23:41most likely
23:42her cell phone
23:43is in that vehicle.
23:46Punch in on the back
23:47of the car.
23:49The quality is not
23:50very good,
23:51but we're able to see
23:52the windows on the vehicle,
23:53whether there's
23:54a reflection.
23:55At 10.50,
23:57we can see that
23:58the window on his trooper
23:59is intact.
24:01At 2.13 p.m.,
24:03when it goes back
24:04the other way,
24:05the window looks
24:05completely different.
24:07You know,
24:07there's no reflection
24:08at all.
24:09We're able to see
24:09that the window
24:10on his vehicle
24:11is now smashed.
24:13Rob was lying to us.
24:15His vehicle window
24:17was damaged
24:18and broken
24:18the day
24:19of Marilee's disappearance.
24:22What happened
24:23to Rob's vehicle?
24:24Why did this window
24:25become broken?
24:26In this time frame,
24:28how did it get broken?
24:31We know that just
24:32shortly after this,
24:33within minutes,
24:34Marilee's phone
24:35no longer has activity.
24:38We keep watching
24:39the surveillance footage
24:40to see what else
24:41we might find.
24:43Show that again.
24:46And at about 2.55 p.m.,
24:48we see Rob's vehicle
24:50again past the Maverick.
24:52Punch in.
24:55He's traveling south
24:56towards his home
24:57in Hiram.
24:59We know that he was
25:00at work about
25:01an hour after that.
25:02We know that Rob
25:03most likely
25:04will pass through again
25:05on his way back
25:06to Logan
25:07where he goes
25:07to work later.
25:16At 3.09 p.m.,
25:17we see Rob's vehicle
25:18again travel north
25:20past the Maverick.
25:21Go closer.
25:23This time, though,
25:24there's something different.
25:25We can see that the driver
25:26is not wearing
25:27a white shirt.
25:28The driver's wearing
25:28a darker colored shirt.
25:36Stop.
25:38Just a few seconds later,
25:39we see a vehicle
25:40that looks like
25:41a gold Toyota Camry.
25:42It looks like
25:43Marilee's vehicle,
25:43and it passes north,
25:45almost directly
25:46behind Rob's vehicle.
25:59Rob told us
26:01that he last saw
26:02Marilee and the vehicle
26:03in Logan
26:04at Shane's apartment.
26:05Punch in.
26:07The thing about
26:08that gold Camry
26:09that we saw
26:10was the driver
26:11was wearing
26:11a white shirt.
26:12So we were
26:13very suspicious
26:13that Rob
26:14was driving
26:14Marilee's vehicle
26:15at that time.
26:17The driver
26:18of Rob's vehicle
26:19was wearing
26:19a dark shirt.
26:21We were almost certain
26:22that it was Shane
26:22driving the vehicle
26:23because we had Shane
26:25on surveillance
26:26later that day
26:26wearing a dark shirt.
26:29So where is Marilee?
26:31We didn't see anything
26:32that would indicate
26:33there was a passenger
26:34in either vehicle.
26:35However,
26:36we couldn't be certain
26:37just because of
26:38the quality of the video.
26:41Marilee has been missing
26:42for three weeks.
26:43Her friends and family
26:45struggled to come to terms
26:46with her disappearance.
26:48It was a constant battle
26:49where you knew
26:51something was very wrong,
26:52very bad,
26:53but you still want
26:55to try to convince yourself
26:57that this still
26:58could be okay.
27:00I was cautious of Rob
27:02from the very beginning.
27:04She had told me
27:06about how he was abusive,
27:08both verbal
27:08and attempts
27:09of physical abuse.
27:12Rob didn't sound right
27:13and she could do
27:14100% better.
27:15And then when she
27:17came up missing,
27:18that was just my gut.
27:20Went straight to,
27:22that guy did something
27:23to her.
27:25At this point
27:25in the investigation,
27:26we're almost certain
27:28that some type of foul play
27:29has been involved,
27:30that she's no longer alive.
27:33We had evidence
27:34against Rob,
27:35but we also had evidence
27:36against Shane,
27:38who was most likely
27:39to tell us the truth.
27:42Investigators invite Shane
27:43to the police department
27:45for a second time.
27:47We determined that Shane,
27:49if we confronted him
27:50with the evidence,
27:51that he most likely would
27:52help us with the investigation.
27:55So did you guys
27:55take Rob's car
27:56to work that day?
27:57Yeah, Rob's vehicle.
27:57Did you ever leave
27:58work at home?
27:59No.
28:01Shane again stuck
28:02to his story
28:02that they left
28:03in Rob's green
28:03Isuzu trooper,
28:05which we knew
28:05was a false statement.
28:07He said that they
28:08had arrived at work
28:09and they had never left,
28:10which we knew
28:11was a false statement.
28:12Shane said that he
28:13had never known
28:15about Marilee's dog
28:16or that she even
28:16had a dog,
28:18which clearly we knew
28:20was a false statement.
28:22I see Shane
28:23who's covering for Rob.
28:25Because all this stuff
28:26you told me today,
28:27I can prove
28:28that you lied to me.
28:29What do you mean
28:30I lied to you,
28:30honestly?
28:31Shane, I know that day
28:32that you left TTM.
28:33I know that day
28:34you were in your vehicle.
28:36And I know that you
28:36had the dog with you.
28:37And that's all on camera.
28:40I began to show
28:41still photos
28:42from surveillance video
28:43to Shane
28:44to confront him
28:45about his lies.
28:46Whose vehicle is that?
28:49It's my vehicle.
28:51That's the day
28:52she went missing.
28:54Okay.
28:55You're in your vehicle.
28:57See those times?
28:58Those are the times
28:59you left work
29:0020 minutes after getting there.
29:02And when you return, Shane?
29:03That's because
29:04I go to Paco's Tacos
29:06all the time.
29:06You just told me
29:07you never left that day.
29:09And when you return,
29:10her dog
29:13is seen on camera
29:14with you and Rob.
29:17It was at this point in time
29:18that Shane started to crumble.
29:21I'm trying to be honest with you.
29:23I'm just scared by the sake
29:24because I'm scared
29:25he's going to do something
29:26to me and my kids.
29:27I'm being honest with you.
29:30Shane was obviously scared.
29:32I think he was afraid
29:34of Rob Willis
29:35and what Rob had committed
29:37and entangled Shane in.
29:40Shane does admit
29:41that he helps Rob
29:42move Merrilee's vehicle
29:44to the Paco's Tacos
29:45parking lot
29:46just a few blocks
29:47west of TTM.
29:49How did he get rid of her car?
29:50What did he tell you?
29:52And Shane,
29:53if you had a pardon,
29:53you need to be honest
29:54with me right now.
29:55I'm not.
29:55I know he took it down
29:58somewhere.
29:59I don't know where.
30:00I still needed to know
30:02how it got up to Boise.
30:03Shane denied moving
30:04into Boise.
30:06Who did you say
30:06went with him?
30:07Because you can't take
30:08two cars that far.
30:10I already have the car, Shane.
30:12Tell me who it is, Shane.
30:16His name is Jordan.
30:19Jordan?
30:20Mm-hmm.
30:21What's Jordan's last name?
30:22I have no idea.
30:23I've only met him once.
30:24Shane told us
30:25that Jordan
30:26had been a co-worker
30:27with Rob and Shane
30:29previously.
30:30And that's how
30:31he knew him.
30:32Search the database
30:33for anybody named Jordan
30:34that fits his description.
30:36He did describe
30:37some very distinct
30:38and unique tattoos
30:39that Jordan had
30:40on his face.
30:43He's got a rap sheet.
30:45It fits the profile
30:46of somebody else
30:47that might have been involved
30:48in Marilee's disappearance.
30:50It's important
30:51at this point in time
30:52that we speak to Jordan.
30:53Because if Jordan
30:54took Marilee's vehicle
30:55to Boise,
30:57I need to know
30:58all the circumstances
30:58behind that.
31:01Police officers
31:02detain Jordan
31:03and bring him back
31:04to the police department
31:05for questioning.
31:08Have you ever heard
31:09the name Marilee Cox-Lafferty?
31:11I have never heard
31:12that name before.
31:14She's this missing lady
31:15that we've been looking for
31:16for five months.
31:18Do you recognize her at all?
31:20No, not at all.
31:22Never heard that name
31:23before.
31:23No, I don't even know
31:25how I would be
31:25even involved with her.
31:27Okay.
31:28Well, she had this
31:29little gold Toyota
31:33and that's why you're here.
31:36I asked him about
31:37his involvement
31:38with Rob Willis.
31:39You ever been up
31:40to Boise with him?
31:41I did.
31:42I took a trip
31:45with him up to Boise.
31:47When was that?
31:47Um, four weeks ago.
31:50How'd you get there?
31:52Um, I drove
31:53his girlfriend's car
31:54up there.
31:55Okay.
31:56Because right now
31:56he's implicated you
31:57in a murder.
31:58Implicated me
31:59by the married car.
32:01That's why I'm trying
32:02to figure out
32:03how deeply you're involved.
32:05Rob told him
32:06it was a girlfriend's vehicle
32:07and he was just going
32:08to go drop it off for him
32:09and that Rob
32:11would pick him up
32:11in Boise.
32:13We knew that Rob
32:14was the one responsible
32:15for Marilee's death
32:16and he had used
32:18these other people
32:19to help cover up
32:20his crime.
32:21At that point in time
32:22the only thing
32:23I could think about
32:23was that we needed
32:25to pick up Rob.
32:25We couldn't have him
32:27out in public
32:27any longer.
32:34And all I want
32:35to do is find her
32:36let her daughter
32:37bury her mother
32:40and I want to give you
32:41a chance to dig
32:42yourself out of this hole.
32:43So you want me
32:43to get from Rob
32:44anything I can get
32:45is that what you're asking?
32:47I want you to tell me
32:48the truth about
32:48everything right now.
32:50Telling the truth
32:50about what?
32:51About what you know.
32:53I don't know anything.
32:54Rob doesn't tell me
32:55s***.
32:57Detective Woods
32:58turns up the heat
32:59to get Shane
33:00to reveal what happened
33:01to Marilee.
33:02Where is she Shane?
33:04She's here.
33:05Where?
33:06Up the canyon somewhere.
33:08Were you there?
33:09No.
33:10Who was with him
33:11when he did it?
33:12He's by himself.
33:14He was with her.
33:16How'd he kill her?
33:17Just, I think he beat
33:19her to death.
33:21Did he say it was what?
33:25Just said dudes like this.
33:28At this point
33:29when Shane tells us this
33:30that's our biggest
33:31piece of evidence
33:32that we're looking for.
33:36Shane led us
33:37to a location
33:38at Blacksmith Fork Canyon
33:40near a pretty
33:41remote camping site.
33:43I was very hopeful
33:44that this would be
33:45the end of the investigation.
33:48Shane said that Rob
33:49had taken him up there
33:50to the specific point
33:51and said,
33:52she's down there.
33:54He believed
33:55that this was a scare tactic.
33:57That, look,
33:58if you talk,
33:58if you tell anybody,
33:59this is what's going to happen
34:01to you as well.
34:03In the immediate area
34:04of the campsite,
34:06there was a tree
34:07and underneath the tree
34:08there was a lot
34:09of broken glass.
34:11There was also glass
34:12embedded in a tree branch
34:13that was the same height
34:15relatively as Rob's vehicle.
34:18Also in this area
34:20was a bracelet
34:21that had the scorpion
34:22charm on it
34:23and I knew that
34:24Marilee was a Scorpio
34:26and so I was pretty certain
34:28that was her bracelet.
34:30I went downhill.
34:31I'm looking around,
34:33I'm trying to find anything.
34:34When I get the distinct odor
34:36of decomposition,
34:38I start moving towards
34:39what I see
34:40as an unnatural rock formation
34:42underneath a tree.
34:44We moved one rock
34:45and we could see
34:46a human foot
34:47underneath the rock pile
34:48and we knew
34:49that we had found
34:50Marilee finally.
34:51I don't think
34:52anyone's ever prepared
34:53to come across
34:54human remains like that.
34:56Marilee had been
34:57in the mountains
34:59buried up there
34:59for about a month.
35:01Marilee was able
35:03to be identified
35:03positively
35:04by her fingerprints.
35:08Marilee's daughter
35:09was staying
35:10at my house.
35:12It just told her
35:13that they found her
35:15and that she was dead
35:17and she screamed
35:19and she just curled
35:20in a ball
35:21and cried
35:22and cried
35:22and cried
35:22and cried.
35:26It broke my heart
35:27so much.
35:29I remember
35:30when I got the phone call
35:31that they had found her
35:33and confirming
35:34everything that
35:35I didn't want confirmed.
35:38That was
35:39one of the hardest
35:40days of my life
35:41to have to come
35:42to reality
35:43that
35:45she was gone.
35:48I wanted to hold
35:49her hand.
35:49I wanted to be
35:50a big sister
35:51and I wanted
35:51to take it away.
35:53I would have traded
35:53her places
35:54in a heartbeat
35:55because she fought
35:56so hard to be
35:57the better person
35:58that she was being.
36:01Rob Willis
36:02was placed
36:03under arrest
36:04in Hiram
36:05by a SWAT team
36:06on the afternoon
36:07of September 14th.
36:09I knew I had
36:10another large task
36:12in front of me
36:13in trying to
36:14get some sort
36:15of confession
36:16from Rob.
36:17How much
36:18do you care
36:18about her?
36:20Not that I was
36:21thinking about
36:21starting her life
36:22with Roof.
36:24Is that before
36:24you killed her?
36:26What?
36:28Is that before
36:28you killed her, Rob?
36:29I didn't kill her.
36:30You did?
36:31I didn't kill her.
36:32Rob,
36:32and we're going
36:33to prove it.
36:34I didn't think
36:35he would tell me much.
36:36When I tried
36:38to confront him,
36:39he still deflected.
36:41We found her.
36:42And?
36:43And your DNA
36:43is going to be
36:44you killed her, Rob.
36:47I know you killed her, Rob.
36:49You know?
36:50I didn't kill her.
36:51I think you just
36:52lost control.
36:54When I finally told him
36:55that we had recovered
36:56Marilee and confronted him
36:57and told him
36:58that we knew
36:58he was responsible,
37:00Rob requested
37:01an attorney.
37:02And at that point,
37:03the interrogation ended.
37:04Take me to jail.
37:05I'm done.
37:07You can sit down
37:08a little bit.
37:15Investigators pieced
37:16together the events
37:17they believe
37:18led to Marilee's murder.
37:20Rob and Marilee
37:21are arguing
37:22about their relationship
37:23and then went
37:24for a drive
37:24and went up
37:25into the mountains.
37:26We believe Rob
37:28had entered
37:28the canyon area
37:29with Marilee
37:30and her dog
37:31in Rob's vehicle.
37:32At some point
37:33in time,
37:34there is a fight
37:35that occurs.
37:36Rob's window
37:37became broken.
37:38We're still not
37:39certain exactly
37:40how Rob killed
37:41Marilee,
37:42but it was
37:43most likely
37:44due to some
37:44blunt force trauma.
37:47Rob had then
37:48moved a lot of rocks
37:49to cover up her body.
37:52Once Rob killed
37:53Marilee,
37:54he left the mountains.
37:55He returns
37:56to Shane's house
37:57and he tells Shane
37:58what he did.
38:00So he now
38:01has to cover up
38:02what happened.
38:03At that point,
38:04Rob realized
38:05Marilee's car
38:06is at his house.
38:07We then know
38:08that him and Shane
38:09left Shane's house
38:10to go back out
38:11to Hiram.
38:12They take
38:13Marilee's car,
38:14Shane driving
38:14Rob's vehicle
38:15and Rob driving
38:16Marilee's vehicle.
38:18Rob dumps
38:19Marilee's car
38:20at Paco's Tacos
38:21with Marilee's dog,
38:22Coco,
38:22inside it.
38:24Rob and Shane
38:24then drive to work
38:25in Shane's Mustang.
38:2920 or 30 minutes
38:30after arriving,
38:31they left TTM
38:33on the way
38:33to Paco's Tacos
38:35to get Marilee's dog
38:36from the vehicle.
38:38And they arrive
38:39back at TTM
38:39a short time later
38:40now with Marilee's dog.
38:42And then the next day,
38:44Rob took Marilee's daughter
38:45up to be with Shawnee.
38:48Rob threatened Jordan
38:49to get him to cooperate
38:50so that Jordan
38:51would drive Marilee's vehicle
38:52from Logan
38:53up to Boise, Idaho
38:54to dispose of it
38:56up there,
38:57most likely
38:57trying to throw us
38:58off the track,
38:59trying to make us think
39:00that Marilee had driven
39:01up there
39:02to see family.
39:04I think Rob did believe
39:05that he was going
39:07to get away with it
39:07because he had tried
39:08to dispose
39:09of all the evidence.
39:11We were not able
39:12to prove that Jordan
39:13intentionally obstructed
39:14the investigation
39:15by moving Marilee's vehicle.
39:17With Shane,
39:18we knew that he had
39:19intentionally misled us
39:20and obstructed
39:21the investigation,
39:21but we also had
39:23a reasonable belief
39:24that Rob had threatened
39:25his life
39:26and threatened him
39:27to participate
39:28with the obstruction.
39:29Shane was a very key witness
39:31to this homicide investigation
39:33and directly responsible
39:34for our recovery
39:34of her body.
39:35Rob never would have
39:36told us that.
39:39Jordan Larson
39:40and Shane Miles
39:41are charged
39:42with no crimes
39:43in relation
39:43to Marilee's death.
39:45Rob Willis
39:46pleads guilty
39:47to first-degree
39:48felony murder.
39:49He is sentenced
39:50to 15 years to life.
39:54CCTV played
39:55a massive role
39:56in this case.
39:58As soon as we knew
39:59that the dog
40:00was located
40:00on that footage,
40:01we knew
40:02that they were lying
40:03because of the CCTV,
40:05and from there
40:05we were able
40:06to build a case
40:07and build it
40:07with more CCTV.
40:09Bringing the dog
40:10back to TTM
40:11was a crucial misstep
40:12on his part.
40:22Every day
40:23when I see
40:26something beautiful
40:27in nature,
40:28I think about her.
40:30I think about her,
40:31you know,
40:32wanting to get
40:32her camera out
40:33and take a picture
40:33of it
40:34and to preserve
40:35that memory.
40:37I miss talking
40:38to her
40:39and
40:41and I'm so
40:43proud to be
40:44her brother.
40:48Marilee was my
40:49forever friend.
40:50She came in
40:51and made me feel
40:53balanced
40:53and understood.
40:55and I'll never
40:57be able
40:57to replace her
40:58in my life
40:59ever.
41:03She's
41:04she's just
41:05one of a kind.
41:10next time on
41:12See No Evil.
41:129-1-1.
41:13There was just
41:14a shot fire
41:15on the end.
41:15Was it shot?
41:18This was actually
41:19a planned out
41:20murder execution.
41:22Do you want
41:22to tell us the truth?
41:24Surveillance video
41:25does not lie.
41:26I don't know.
41:28I don't know.
41:28I don't know.
41:29I don't know.
41:30I don't know.
41:30I don't know.
41:30I don't know.
41:30I don't know.
