The Braves fell to the Mariners in a pitching duel, marking the first time this season that Atlanta has lost a series. It was going to happen eventually, but it is critical that they move on to the Dodgers coming up this weekend.
Transcript
00:00Yeah, well, it was about to.
00:01Should have had its vest on.
00:02It was about to emotionally support that family, too.
00:05I should have made sure the latch was latched.
00:08Well, they call it comfort food, too, right?
00:13I don't know what qualifies as that, but I think some pretty good ribs comfort me.
00:18Anyway, it was going to happen eventually.
00:22We would have loved for it to have lasted a lot longer.
00:24But the Braves lost a series, finally, on the road yesterday to the Mariners.
00:29The rubber match goes the Mariners' way.
00:31We talked about Brian Wu.
00:32That guy can pitch, man.
00:34The Mariners have a good young righty in Wu, and he went six, struck out nine,
00:39and they got one hit off of him, and they were lucky to get the one.
00:42Yeah, man.
00:42I thought, like you said, yesterday you talked about how great he was,
00:46how good he was, and everything like that,
00:47and they just couldn't catch up with him.
00:49They couldn't catch up with him.
00:50They were threatening, talking about the Braves, and Ozzie just missed.
00:54And I understand the look.
00:56Hey, you sure that foul tip it?
00:57I was like, please foul, please say foul tipped it.
01:00And then you get in a situation where you're lazy on first base.
01:04You're lazy.
01:06Happened a lot this year.
01:06Yeah, man.
01:07That's just unacceptable.
01:08And as great as they've been,
01:09that's been something that's kind of reared its ugly head here.
01:12It's just a very lazy situation right there.
01:14Not saying they would have won the game,
01:15but you would have had another man on base, another, you know,
01:17because they didn't get a hit after that.
01:18In a game like that, any runner is vital.
01:21Yeah, you had the opportunity, you know, but yet, you know, like you said,
01:25it was going to eventually be one of those things where it's going to come to an end.
01:28And so now you get a day off.
01:30You're going down to, for the biggest, in my opinion,
01:32the biggest series of the season.
01:34So far, yeah.
01:34Yeah, you're playing those pesky dodges.
01:38Pesky dodges.
01:39Pesky is what we call the Diamondbacks.
01:41Yeah, I know.
01:41Because they're a bunch of slap hitting.
01:43I don't want to give them nothing.
01:44No, this is, I'm glad this is happening now.
01:47Like, the Braves have been doing great.
01:48They've been playing great.
01:49Let's do the test.
01:50Yeah, let's do some.
01:51And then you've got your dudes going this weekend.
01:53Yeah, let's have a real, let's have a battle here.
01:54The Dodgers are awesome.
01:55We can be clear about that.
01:56They won two World Series in a row.
01:58They've got a lot of dudes on that team.
02:00I do wonder, because, and I'm going to say it the way that I would say it about a pitcher,
02:06but then obviously it means something different when it relates to this guy.
02:09You do get to avoid Shohei pitching against you.
02:13But that means he's going to hit against you three times.
02:18Right.
02:19So what would you rather have?
02:20Because he's their best pitcher, too.
02:21Yeah.
02:21Would you rather have Shohei pitching against you one time and only hitting against you twice
02:26or pitching against you zero times and hitting against you three times?
02:29Pitching against me once and hitting against me twice.
02:31Oh, really?
02:31I'd rather do it like this.
02:32I'd rather avoid him as a pitcher.
02:34Because the hitter, you can walk him.
02:37You know?
02:38Or whatever.
02:39Like, you only got to face him four times.
02:41Five if it's not a very good game.
02:43The pitcher, I mean, he might throw a damn no-hitter against you.
02:45He's awesome, man.
02:46I'm glad they avoid him on the mound.
02:47He's awesome.
02:48But I would have loved to see him and Chris Sale go in.
02:50That would have been cool.
02:50I'd love to see him and Chris Sale go in.
02:52Yeah, I agree.
02:52That would have been fun.
02:53But, you know, I think it's going to be, like you said, the biggest test to the day.
02:57You know, it's one of those things that you measure yourself up and see where you really,
03:01really are when you go against this team.
03:03Absolutely.
03:03And that's not just the Brains.
03:04Every team in baseball.
03:05They are the team that everybody wants to be.
03:07They are on the mountaintop.
03:08Yeah, they're the juggernaut.
03:09Yeah, they're on the mountaintop.
03:10And so you've got to judge it.
03:12You know, like I said, you've got Chris Sale.
03:13This is going to be a big test.
03:14Spencer.
03:15Huge test.
03:16And also, and it's Elder?
03:17Elder, yeah.
03:17And Elder.
03:18So, I mean, these are three dudes that are going out to L.A.
03:21And you're coming out, like I said, your first series loss of the season.
03:24And so, you know, show up.
03:26Hopefully everything is, I don't know where Ronald would be in this situation.
03:31Does Michael go back to center?
03:33And he had all these different things.
03:34So, you know, there's a plethora of things that you can learn from this series.
03:39But it's not an overreact series.
03:41No.
03:42And I think that's what it will be.
03:44We'll be coming here Monday.
03:46And if it doesn't go well, I don't anticipate it going well.
03:49I mean, I'm sorry.
03:49I anticipate that it will go well.
03:52That, you know, you'll be like, you'll hear more about, oh, the Braves are the best team in baseball.
03:56And blah, blah, blah, blah.
03:56Because I saw the, whatever the MLB puts out, their weekly rankings.
04:00Braves have been number one for the past couple weeks.
04:02Great.
04:02Great.
04:03Good.
04:03But the Dodgers were like number three, two, four.
04:07Yeah, they're right there.
04:08Yeah, they're good, too.
04:10They got a stick out there, man.
04:11Yeah, it's also May.
04:12So, you know what I mean?
04:13Like power rankings.
04:13I love being number one.
04:14But the thing about it, I want to be number one in all the power rankings.
04:16If we were in May and they were number 16.
04:18Oh, because like last year.
04:20Yeah, exactly.
04:21And the funny thing about the power rankings last year was that nobody believed it.
04:23They were like, yeah, right.
04:24They'll figure it out.
04:25They kept them at like eight, even when they were like one and eight.
04:29Everything that every analyst, whatever, said the most surprising team is the Braves.
04:34It was like, nobody can believe this.
04:36And then finally the All-Star game happened and everyone was like, oh, good.
04:38We can start ignoring the Braves now.
04:40This is great.
04:40Us included.
04:42Yeah.
04:42No, this is a perfect series because they've played as well as they have.
04:46The Dodgers obviously are what they are.
04:48You're going on the road.
04:49You just lost your first series.
04:51You bounce back in this one and you win it.
04:53Awesome.
04:54And, you know, the emotions are going to be a little or the competitiveness, whatever you want to call it.
04:59There's a little bit more focus when you're playing a team like this.
05:01I'm not saying that they weren't focused against the Mariners, but like if you're going to lose your first series
05:06of the year,
05:07that's got to be the least frustrating team to lose to.
05:10Yeah.
05:10Right?
05:10Of all the teams in baseball.
05:12Like no one, I mean, no one's mad about the Mariners.
05:15Right?
05:15No one has any hard feelings about them.
05:17No one hates the Mariners.
05:19If you lost your series to the Phillies, it's like, damn it.
05:21We don't want to lose to the Phillies.
05:22Right.
05:22We don't want to lose to the Mets.
05:24We don't want to lose to the Dodgers.
05:25They're playing a good ball now.
05:26The Mariners are like everybody's kind of like, you know, like fat friend.
05:30You like them.
05:31You know, they're funny.
05:34Everybody's got one of those guys, right?
05:35He's not threatening.
05:36Right.
05:36You know, he's a good time.
05:37Have him around.
05:38You don't have to worry about him.
05:39He's not taking your girl.
05:40He's not taking your girl.
05:42You can leave her.
05:43You can leave him in a room.
05:44You know what?
05:44Drive her home.
05:45Hey, go for it.
05:46Hey, go get her a towel for me.
05:47Yeah, you don't have to worry about the Mariners, man.
05:50And I'm not saying they're a pretty good team.
05:51Don't get me wrong.
05:52And obviously they were a game away from the World Series last year,
05:54but like no one has any bad feelings towards them.
05:56So if you're going to lose the series,
05:57at least it was against a team that no one hates.
06:00Now you can erase it against the Dodgers.
06:02The other fun thing about the series happening now is,
06:04this is what I'm going to do.
06:05If the Braves sweep the Dodgers,
06:07then I'm going to make bold declarations
06:08about how great the Braves are on Monday.
06:10If the Braves lose the series to the Dodgers,
06:13I'm going to say, it's fine.
06:13It's May.
06:15I'm already hedging it before it even happens.
06:17I mean, you already put it out there in the ether.
06:19That's fine.
06:19I don't care.
06:20It's just May.
06:21Yeah, I mean, all right.
06:22That's the fun thing about 162.
06:24You can do that.
06:24You can lie to yourself the whole time.
06:26Yeah, until the end.
06:27Until the end.
06:28Yeah, it's fine.
06:30West Coast, they're tired of being out there.
06:32Yeah.
06:32But if they sweep them, it's like, see?
06:34Yeah.
06:34Is this the last series on this trip?
06:36It's got to be.
06:37Yeah.
06:37It is.
06:38Yeah.
06:39But no, you'll be like, yeah.
06:40I mean, obviously we're going to come in and say,
06:41you're going to be excited.
06:42We know this.
06:43All eyes are on this.
06:44How many of these are national televised?
06:46I'm assuming.
06:47I think only one.
06:48None of them?
06:48One kind of.
06:48None of them was like seven.
06:49I thought Sunday is sort of on MLB TV.
06:51Really?
06:51Okay, I know.
06:52It's weird that it's not Sunday Night Baseball.
06:54I was looking at that as well.
06:55Okay.
06:55I know that does kind of sucks because that means Friday and Saturday are super late.
07:00Right.
07:00And like, you know, maybe.
07:02Maybe.
07:02We'll see.
07:03That might be a recap on Saturday morning, Sunday morning kind of thing.
07:07It's the weekend, baby.
07:08And then Sunday is a 4-10 first pitch, which is good, but I love Sunday Night Baseball.
07:14Yes.
07:14It's so much more fun to be on that.
07:15Yeah, that's why I was curious about everything like that.
07:17They're thinking about the mothers.
07:19They're thinking about the mamas.
07:20That's true.
07:22You know, my wife wants to watch the Braves.
07:24Yeah.
07:24Think about the mamas.
07:25Think about her.
07:26You know, trying to get to, you know, because this is the only day of the year that you
07:29can't get a reservation for brunch if you didn't, you know, plan it two months ago.
07:34I'd just cook brunch.
07:35Brunch sucks.
07:36Dude, that's why I love you, dude.
07:38Brunch sucks.
07:38We are on the same page.
07:41Just cook it.
07:41Let's go to brunch.
07:42I hate brunch.
07:43Why?
07:43What do you want there?
07:44What are you going to get?
07:45I hate brunch.
07:46What are you going to get?
07:46Mimosas?
07:47I'll make them.
07:47Let's get drunk at home.
07:48Bloody Marys?
07:49I know how.
07:49Yeah.
07:50I'm so with you on brunch.
07:51Yeah.
07:51This sucks.
07:53So with you.
07:55So with me.
07:55I hate brunch.
07:56All right.
07:56So with me.
07:57We'll come back.
07:57We'll get to what's trending here to kick off the show on a Trillville Thursday.
08:01Thanks for being with us.
08:02Sports Radio.
