Dozens of jobs and several courses will be cut from Tafe as the public training provider tries to rein in spending. The government says it's investing more in priority areas, but critics argue the changes will reduce opportunities for Tasmanian students.

00:02TASTAFE offers more than 200 courses, including classes designed to train the next generation
00:08of laboratory technicians.
00:10It's absolutely critical, there's nothing else like it offered anywhere in the state.
00:15Once certified, the lab technicians can do everything from water testing and food quality control
00:21to pathology and school science support.
00:24But from the end of this year, the Diploma and Certificate IV lab courses are being scrapped.
00:30People will have to travel interstate and then we'll lose them to that
00:34and there's just such a huge brain drain here anyway with our young people.
00:38TASTAFE is also ending its agreement with the Tasmanian Prison Service to provide courses to inmates
00:44and it's scaling back its Adult Migrant English program.
00:48That's on top of nine creative courses and a meat processing safety program that ended last year.

01:02and it's now been confirmed that 44 jobs will go with another 12 roles proposed for the chopping block.
01:09Whether it be people leaving school, whether it be prisoners, whether it be migrants coming into this state,
01:14we need TASTAFE to be there to be their support, to know that they're going to get really strong courses
01:20that are going to mean something to them once they've completed them.
01:22But some believe there could be further cuts if TASTAFE is to achieve its savings target.
01:28The information that we had tabled in Parliament doesn't come anywhere close to $45 million.
01:34The question remains, where are the rest of the cuts going to come from?
01:37Minister Ellis should be transparent with Tasmanians about course cuts and job cuts at TASTAFE.
