Public schools in Tasmania’s south were closed Thursday as teachers and other state service workers went on strike. Amid an ongoing industrial dispute. While the government insisted it was the latest wage offer was fair, unions say they're prepared to walk off the job again unless a better deal has been tabled.

00:29The government has offered teachers an 8.75 per cent pay rise over the next three years
00:35plus other incentives and conditions but teachers say the deal doesn't reflect the pressures
00:41of the job.
00:43The biggest challenge would be workload in addition to workplace violence.
00:48These are real issues that all of our staff across the board are facing every day.
00:53There needs to be a major increase in our education support personnel in our classrooms
00:59that we rely on to help support our students.
01:03The Education Minister says it's a fair and affordable offer.
01:08It reflects the shared priorities of teacher workload, staff safety, professional staff
01:14support and a range of operational matters that are just essential to supporting our teachers.
01:20This is the third day in a row of rolling teacher strikes across the state and the Education
01:26Union says there could be further industrial action unless a deal is reached.
01:31If things don't go according to plan then there will be further actions into Term 2.
01:36But for now teachers will return to school as negotiations over the pay deal continue.
