00:00Five, ten and three quarters.
00:03I'm always like, I'm not 5'11".
00:13I've had so many decades now where I've been associated with Chanel,
00:18but to be able to come back at this time in my life is beautiful.
00:23And with Mature now designing,
00:25but I was talking about how I used to go and stay with Carl in Biarritz.
00:29And then we did the cruise show in Biarritz and now I'm doing the Met here with Mature.
00:34I'm wearing the first time his collection has been shown in terms of the Met.
00:40He hasn't designed a couture dress for the Met Gala yet, so I get to wear the first.
00:45When we were talking initially about me coming back to the house,
00:49he just said, I loved what you did with Carl in with Chanel.
00:53And it was part of my evolution in terms of the Chanel No. 5 commercial
00:58and that dress that I wore, and I think we were just meant to be.
01:04He pulled me in because he's such a gentle person, but he's so exquisitely talented.
01:09And I just felt he'll take care of me and he'll be loving and he'll be generous of spirit.
01:16You can just feel that. You can feel that in his designs.
01:19You can feel that in his essence.
01:21I think there's an ease and a beauty to what he does.
01:25So it's an incredible privilege to be able to wear his clothes.
01:29A lot of times I'm stressed because I'm like, I hope I can do them justice.
01:35The magical thing about working with someone like Nicole is she is a true artist.
01:39And to start from the museum and you think about art, you think about history,
01:43it's actually great to collaborate with someone who is an artist.
01:46And Nicole is such an artist and also what I do is an art form.
01:49And she kind of leans into you and pours into this idea of letting you just be free.
01:55Nicole is one of the greatest collaborators I've ever worked with because she is incredibly fearless.
02:04She can get into these beautiful characters that we kind of build together.
02:10I mean, no wonder she's been nominated many times for an Oscar.
02:15And no wonder she's one of our greatest celebrated artists, right?
02:20Because she loves collaborating with talent.
02:24I have been working with her, I think it's maybe consistently about four years.
02:29I did actually do a cover of Vogue with Nicole years ago in the English countryside.
02:36I think I was pregnant with my second at the time.
02:39Her ongoing story with Chanel is couture.
02:43She is couture.
02:44We think about it from every carpet that Nicole has ever touched.
02:47It's couture.
02:48So that's the house that's so identifiable with that word.
02:51That's why I'm pretty sure they both start with the letter C because Chanel couture.
02:56And like, you know, we have this internal joke that she's lady couture.
03:01Mathieu, I'm such a fan and what he's doing, blowing this beautiful fresh air back into Chanel.
03:08The DNA that he's like really kind of enhanced is so important.
03:11It was just, it's nice to collaborate with someone who is open to listening and feeling what you're saying.
03:19So the collaboration was easy and spectacular.
03:22We talked, then we had a fitting in Biarritz and then we adjusted again and he just keeps,
03:29he sees it and then he creates it more and creates it more.
03:31And that's what I've always said is that I love being the doll.
03:35I love standing there and having it designed around your body.
03:39So I came up with a couple of ideas and we talked about some things and
03:42this color red just kept jumping off the page for me.
03:47And it's something to note in history that, you know, red is such a dynamic color
03:51when you think of most paintings.
03:53And it's something that just draws people and it's very dynamic and it's very sensual
03:57and it's very like strong and yet at the same time, effortless.
04:02It's not as easy as you think, because a lot of the time I still have not seen the dress
04:07on.
04:07This is the day of the mat, you guys.
04:09Okay.
04:10And I still have not seen the dress on.
04:12I have seen photos.
04:14I did some FaceTime, but to actually visually feel and see, I have not done that.
04:20And so it's a beautiful process of collaboration.
04:24My intention is to make her the most gorgeous version of herself and just make
04:30her feel the most confident she's ever felt.
04:34You know, I want to make sure that her complexion looks as beautiful and harmonizes with the dress
04:39as humanly possible.
04:41The finish of the skin, the complexion, I've always been known for that.
04:46People often say to me, they can tell when I've done the makeup because of the quality of the skin,
04:50which is such a nice compliment.
04:53So you know what people don't understand?
04:55This is a lot of work.
04:58It's a lot, a lot of work.
04:59And outside of me, it is the people who all touch this gown from the ateliers to like people who
05:07just
05:07carry these things.
05:08It's a lot of work and it's a lot of energy and it's a lot of passion that goes into
05:12it.
05:13And that's a piece for me, that's a large art form as well.
05:16So when you think about artist fashion, it's like we, from start to finish, a slice of art,
05:22a slice of an artist has touched this moment.
05:25It's a lot.
05:26You're the steward.
05:27You're greeting everybody.
05:28You're standing at the top of those magnificent stairs.
05:31You're standing there with that iconic sort of feeling of what the Met represents,
05:35the museum and art, and there's so much history.
05:38When hair has this incredible elongation, it can form around the body as a language,
05:47ultimately.
05:48And I think hair is a very powerful tool and has been for many, many years.
05:53You know, when you think of Tina Turner, you think of her hair.
05:56When you think of Dolly Parton, you think of her hair.
05:58When you think of Cher, you think of her hair.
06:00Hair walks into the room first a lot of the time.
06:03It is about self-expression where you are in your life, right?
06:08I can remember haircuts more than I can remember a lot of things,
06:13sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad.
06:15We sometimes got like boop over by getting a bad haircut.
06:21Hair is one of your greatest accessories.
06:23And tonight I used it as a form of art.
06:26This particular dress is covered in this most amazing flat beading.
06:31There's these feathers that trim the cuff and they cascade throughout her waistline.
06:36And it's something about it that just feels like liquid.
06:40It's literally like she's been dipped in such this beautiful candy apple.
06:44It kind of feels that way.
06:46And, you know, even just saying that out loud, it's just something that just the color red is so
06:51symbolic for me with like New York, like the big apple and things like that.
06:55There's all these great artful plays for what you're going to see tonight with this dress.
06:59I'm really excited for what the final look will be.
07:03Today I'm working with Clé de Poe and I'm excited to get going.
07:07When you have it all together and you're walking up those stairs, something magic happens.
07:13Partly being able to wear clothes was something I could do ever since I was little because I was so
07:19tall. And it's lovely to be still asked to do that at this time in my life. And then to
07:24be able to bring
07:25my daughter, who's blooming. And what she's wearing tonight shows that it's springtime,
07:31it's blossoming, it's blooming. And I'm wearing red, which is the deepest form of love.
07:38It represents love. And so to be her loving mother while she's blossoming is kind of lovely.
07:45I hope it's going to be a great night. I hope we're going to see beautiful,
07:49beautiful creations because we're seeing fashion as art. And let's go. Let's have some fun.
08:19Let's go.
