00:01Ten signs Jesus isn't enough for you, even though He is.
00:07You've stopped being amazed by Him.
00:10Your time with Jesus feels more like a check-in than a relationship.
00:15What used to move you spiritually doesn't anymore, and you aren't sure why.
00:22You trust Jesus with eternity, but not with today.
00:27Your spiritual life is getting busier, but not deeper.
00:33You're more focused on what Jesus hasn't done for you than what He already did.
00:40Your walk with Jesus feels like it's stuck on repeat.
00:45Minor stress feels like a full-blown crisis.
00:50You don't expect Jesus to do anything big in your life.
00:55You're no longer living like Jesus could return at any time.
01:01Stop living like He's not enough.
01:05He is.
01:07Jesus is enough.
01:12Coming up today on Turning Point.
01:14I want to be a casualty in the last years of my life.
01:18I don't want to let anything that God has done in my life keep me from believing that He has
01:22still much more to give.
01:25The land of Canaan is filled with promise.
01:27And if that's true for me, it ought to be true for all of us.
01:31Deep roots, strong branches, abundant leaves.
01:35This is the flourishing life God designed for you.
01:39A life firmly planted, growing strong, and unshakable through any storm.
01:44In his new book, Five Psalms for a Flourishing Life, Dr. David Jeremiah invites you to step out of a
01:50faith that feels like just getting by and into an active, growing faith rooted in the unchanging truth of God's
01:57Word.
01:57In this powerful study, Dr. Jeremiah explores five key psalms that have nourished God's people for generations.
02:04Psalms with the power to revive your soul and transform the places in your life that feel dry, barren, or
02:10stuck into meaningful growth in God.
02:13These aren't self-help strategies or positive thinking techniques.
02:16They are time-tested truths that have sustained God's people through millennia of both triumph and trial,
02:22teaching us how to sink our roots deep into eternal resources while bearing fruit that blesses the world around us.
02:28Dr. David Jeremiah will send you five psalms for a flourishing life in appreciation when you give a gift of
02:34any amount in support of this program.
02:36Or for your gift of $75 or more, request three books, one to keep and two to share.

02:56If you're like me and you watch television, not very much, but sometimes,
03:02you're quite amazed when commercials come on television for a medical product.
03:08And while they're telling you what this product is going to do to heal your various diseases,
03:14they give you all the warnings of the things that can happen to you if you take this product.
03:21And after you listen to all those warnings, you decide to keep the disease you have.
03:29Sometimes it actually seems like the warnings that come with health products
03:33are scarier than the disease you're trying to cure.
03:37As crazy as some warnings may sound, we all need warning signs in our lives, don't we?
03:45In the last part of Hebrews chapter 3, we have two warning signs.
03:52These two warning signs are wrapped around the heart.
03:57Warning signs about your heart.
04:01The writer of Hebrews is writing this letter to these Jewish believers or these men and women,
04:10these Hebrews who have come out of Judaism toward Christ.
04:14And he has a great concern for them.
04:17Many of them have heard the gospel, some of them from the very mouth of an apostle.
04:22And for various reasons, they hold back from their commitment.
04:26Some apparently have made a profession of faith, but they haven't followed through on it.
04:32Some have started getting ridiculed by their friends because of their fellowship with Christians.
04:38And because of that, they've started to waver and hesitate about their relationship with Christ.
04:44For many of them, they were wanting to be Christians,
04:48but they were unwilling to throw their whole weight on Jesus.
04:53Knowing the truth, they, some of them, were willingly and intentionally turning away from it
05:00to go back to where they had been before.
05:03And because of that, the writer of Hebrews files this warning report,
05:09not only for them, but for all of us.
05:14He begins in verses 7 through 11 with the discussion of the disobedience of a hard heart.
05:23And his discussion begins with an exhortation to the Hebrews in verse 7 and 8a.
05:31He says,
05:32Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
05:35Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.
05:41Now, three times in Hebrews chapter 3, once in Hebrews 4,
05:45Therefore, we are warned against a hard heart.
05:50The disobedience of a hard heart.
05:53Now, if you see something like that four times in the context of a few verses,
05:58guess what?
05:58This is about hard hearts.
06:01This is about people who have hearts that get calloused to the things of God.
06:07Notice that the word in the text is the word today.
06:11Say that word with me, today.
06:14You know, we need to get that word back in our vocabulary.
06:17The word today is a God word.
06:19I think the word tomorrow is a Satan word.
06:24The word that you find in the Scripture from God is always the word today.
06:29There's never a tomorrow.
06:31The enemy is the one who comes and tells us tomorrow.
06:36And the history of Israel, the Holy Spirit is telling the Hebrews
06:40that the road of tomorrow leads to the town of nowhere and never.
06:48Every time the Spirit of God speaks to us and we refuse to respond,
06:53our hearts get a little harder.
06:56And ultimately, if we continue this pattern of unbelief,
07:00we are unable to respond because our hearts are so hard
07:04that they cannot respond to the outward stimulus of the word of God.
07:10Second Corinthians 6, 2 says,
07:13For he says,
07:14In an acceptable time I have heard you,
07:18and in the day of salvation I have helped you.
07:22Behold, now is the accepted time.
07:26Behold, now is the day of salvation.
07:32The space between God's command and our response
07:35does not belong to God.
07:36It belongs to the enemy.
07:38Because God is the God of obedience
07:41and Satan is the emissary of disobedience.
07:45And when God speaks,
07:46if we allow time to elapse before we respond,
07:50we give over that time to the enemy
07:52because that's what he does.
07:53He talks us into not doing what God tells us to do.
07:58In giving the exhortation,
08:00the writer of Hebrews is going to give us
08:01a little illustration or an example.
08:04And he goes back to the Old Testament history of Israel
08:07and tells us about what is called in the Scripture
08:11as in the rebellion.
08:13Notice verses 8b and 9, the rebellion.
08:16As in the rebellion in the day of trial in the wilderness
08:20where your fathers tested me and tried me
08:25and saw my works for 40 years.
08:30Now, this is a description of a very particular period
08:34in the Israelites' history.
08:36It describes the time between when they came out of Egypt
08:40and when they went into Canaan.
08:42Despite God's miraculous works
08:45and his gracious, providential faithfulness to them,
08:48the people of God, the people of Israel,
08:51failed to commit themselves to him in faith.
08:53They didn't believe him.
08:55And I believe that in this context,
08:57we have two events in mind,
08:59one that happened at the beginning of the 40 years
09:01and one that happened at the end of the 40 years,
09:04despite all that God had done
09:07in bringing the Israelites out of Egypt.
09:10Believe it or not, in our lingual today,
09:13we would say, they just didn't get it.
09:16The word for rebellion is meribah.
09:19The word for trial is massa.
09:23Now, those words don't mean anything to you
09:25unless you read what happened.
09:26Now, let me read from Exodus chapter 17.
09:29And all the congregation of the children of Israel
09:31sat on their journey from the wilderness of Sin,
09:33according to the commandment of the Lord.
09:35And they camped in Rephidim,
09:37but there was no water for the people to drink.
09:39Therefore the people contended with Moses,
09:42and they said,
09:43Give us water that we may drink.
09:45And Moses said to them,
09:46Why do you contend with me?
09:47Why do you tempt the Lord?
09:49And the people thirsted there for water,
09:51and the people complained against Moses and said,
09:54Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt
09:57to kill us and our children
09:59and our livestock with thirst?
10:01Now, remember what God has just done for them?
10:05If God can part the Red Sea,
10:06do you think he can provide a little water?
10:09But they had lost their faith.
10:11They no longer believed.
10:13And at the commandment of God,
10:15Moses was told to relieve their stress.
10:18Exodus 17, 4 through 7, we read,
10:21So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying,
10:23What shall I do with this people?
10:25Every pastor has said that on a Monday morning
10:27at one time or another.
10:29Oh, Lord, what shall I do with this people?
10:33They are almost ready to stone me.
10:36And the Lord said to Moses,
10:37Go before the people,
10:38take with you some of the elders of Israel,
10:40take in your hand your rod
10:42with which you struck the river,
10:43and go.
10:44Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock,
10:47and you shall strike the rock,
10:48and water will come out of it,
10:50that the people may drink.
10:51And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
10:54So he called the name of the place Massah
10:57and Meribah, rebellion and testing,
11:02because of the contention of the children of Israel
11:05and because they tempted the Lord, saying,
11:08Listen, is the Lord among us or not?
11:13After all he had done for them,
11:15they're asking that question,
11:17Is the Lord in my life or not?
11:20Is God with me or not?
11:22Now, before you get too critical of the Israelites,
11:26have we not done that?
11:27After all that God has done for us,
11:30after everything he's provided for us,
11:31are there not occasions in the wilderness
11:34when we say, Is God with us or not?
11:39Only two men stood up for God, Joshua and Caleb.
11:43And by the way, they were the only two men
11:46who got to go into the land of Canaan
11:48after that whole generation of unbelief.
11:52Became dead corpses in the wilderness.
11:55Now, the problem was that when the spies came back,
12:02Israel turned negative.
12:05Have you ever been around a group that turns negative?
12:08Some of you have been in churches that have turned negative.
12:12For hour after hour, they sat around with all this negativity
12:16about what was going to happen to them,
12:19how they were better off in Egypt.
12:20At least they had a square meal every day,
12:22even though they had to work hard.
12:24Now they had to go through the wilderness.
12:25Now God is going to send them into the promised land.
12:28They're going to get massacred by all these giants
12:30and grouse and crumble and complain.
12:35Negativity hour after hour.
12:40And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of meeting
12:42before all the children of Israel.
12:44And the Lord said to Moses,
12:45How long will these people reject me?
12:47And how long will they not believe me
12:49with all the signs which I have performed among them?
12:52And Moses begged God to forgive the Israelites
12:55for their unbelief.
12:56And God responded with these words.
12:58And the Lord said,
12:59I have pardoned according to your word,
13:01but truly as I live,
13:03all the earth before all these men have seen my glory
13:07and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness
13:09and have put me to the test now these ten times
13:12and have not heeded my voice.
13:13They certainly shall not see the land
13:16of which I swore to their fathers,
13:18nor shall any of those who rejected me
13:20except for Joshua and Caleb.
13:22No one over 20 years of age
13:24was allowed to enter the promised land,
13:26including Moses.
13:29And during the next 38 years,
13:31Joshua and Caleb got up every morning
13:34and went to a funeral
13:36from somebody of their generation
13:38who was left to die in the wilderness.
13:43God had so many wonderful things for these people
13:45just waiting across the border,
13:47and the only thing that kept them from getting them
13:50was their unwillingness to believe God.
13:53Their hearts had been hardened,
13:56and they would not believe.
13:59Now, the rest of this passage
14:01is sort of like the application of all of this to us.
14:05We need to remember what happened in Israel,
14:07but let's go to the second point in this lesson,
14:10which is the deceitfulness of an evil heart.
14:13And we begin in verse 12
14:15with the peril we need to look out for.
14:19It says in verse 12,
14:20Beware, brethren.
14:22That's us.
14:23That's them.
14:24That's the Hebrews.
14:25That's us.
14:25That's why it's in the Bible.
14:27Beware, brethren and cistern.
14:29Beware.
14:31Watch.
14:32Lest there be in any of you
14:34an evil heart of unbelief
14:36in departing from the living God,
14:40lest any of you be hardened
14:42through the deceitfulness of sin.
14:46The author here is concerned that the believers
14:49to whom he is writing,
14:50any of you,
14:51any of us,
14:52might do what they did.
14:54The call to believers then and now
14:56is to beware,
14:57to watch out for,
14:59and not get caught up in unbelief,
15:01because unbelief will keep us
15:03from what God wants in our lives.
15:06It will keep us from his promises.
15:08It will keep us from his rest,
15:10according to the Scripture.
15:12It won't take away our salvation
15:14if we have trusted Christ,
15:16but our unwillingness to trust Christ
15:20will keep us from what God wants in our life.
15:22And sometimes we have to ask this question.
15:24If I can trust God with eternity,
15:26why can I not trust him with next week?
15:30If I can trust God to get me from earth to heaven
15:32and keep me there forever and ever,
15:35why is it that I cannot trust Jesus Christ
15:37to help me work through that problem
15:39I've got in my life,
15:40in my marriage,
15:41in my family,
15:42in the place where I work?
15:44I cannot trust him.
15:45And in our unbelief,
15:46we pull back,
15:47and then we keep pulling back
15:48until our hearts are hardened
15:50and we miss everything God wants us to have.
15:54The peril we need to look out for
15:55is that we allow our hearts to be hardened
15:58so that we don't hear the truth
15:59and we won't respond to it.
16:01Now, notice,
16:02this is kind of out of context in some ways,
16:05but it's so precious
16:06in the sense that the second point is
16:07there's a peril we need to look out for
16:09and there are people we need to look after.
16:12Notice what it says in verse 13,
16:14but exhort one another daily
16:16while it is called today,
16:18lest any of you be hardened
16:20through the deceitfulness of sin.
16:21The word exhort is the same word for encourage,
16:24so let's read it again.
16:25But encourage one another daily
16:27while it is called today,
16:29lest any of you be hardened
16:30through the deceitfulness of sin.
16:32These are the people we need to look after.
16:34And notice how different things might have been
16:37at Kadesh Barnea
16:38if the people who had come back,
16:40even with some discouraging information,
16:43had instead of trying to discourage everybody,
16:46decided this is what God has called us to do.
16:48Let's encourage one another
16:49and we can do it.
16:51So, looking back over this section,
16:53here is the downward spiral we need to avoid.
16:56And I'm gonna put these up on the screen.
16:58Here's the downward spiral
16:59from unbelief to departure to sin
17:05to being deceived and being hardened.
17:09That's what happens.
17:11In spite of all that God has done for us,
17:13if we're not careful,
17:15we forget the heritage we have in Christ.
17:18And like I said before,
17:20we're okay to trust him for eternity.
17:23It's tomorrow that I can't believe him for.
17:28So, there's a past we need to look back to.
17:31Notice in verse 14 and 15.
17:34For we have become partakers of Christ
17:36if we hold the beginning of our confidence to the end
17:39while it is said today,
17:41if you will hear his voice,
17:43do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.
17:46I know this is a hard saying,
17:47but listen carefully.
17:48In the Bible, it says that we are to make sure of our faith.
17:52We are to examine ourselves to see whether or not we're in the faith.
17:55Now, here's what I want you to understand from this.
17:58If you're a Christian and you've accepted Christ,
18:01you will have detours in your life.
18:03All of us have had those, including your speaker.
18:08But your detours never take you clear away from God
18:11with no desire in your heart to return.
18:15If you can be a Christian and walk away from God
18:18for years and years
18:19and never have any desire in your heart to return,
18:22then you never have known Jesus in the first place.
18:26Because the Bible says that God puts his seed within us
18:30when we become Christians.
18:32And we are born again.
18:34How many of you know you cannot be unborn?
18:38And you become God's person, God's family.
18:42There's a verse in 1 John chapter 2
18:45that maybe summarizes this thought
18:47better than anything I could say.
18:49Let me read it to you.
18:50It's in 219.
18:51It says here,
18:52They went out from us, but they were never of us.
18:57If they had been of us, they would have continued with us.
19:02But they went out that they might be made manifest
19:06that none of them were of us.
19:10Did you get that?
19:11It says in this group,
19:13there were some who came and hung out with everybody,
19:15but then one day they left,
19:17and they went out.
19:19And they went out from us
19:21because they never really were of us.
19:24And they went out from us
19:26in order that it might be manifested
19:28and that they were never of us in the first place.
19:31And that's really a lot of what Hebrews is talking about.
19:34These threshold Christians, if you will,
19:37who had come close to the gospel,
19:38but then had pulled back and gone back into Judaism.
19:41What the writer of Hebrews is saying is this,
19:43your inability to understand your initial confidence in Christ
19:47and to persevere as a saint.
19:50And there's a part of that that maybe we'll never understand,
19:53but our confidence in Christ
19:54and our staying with Christ
19:56is what demonstrates that Christ is really in our lives.
19:59You may have been on some journeys away from him,
20:02but the very fact you're in church today
20:03tells me something's going on in your heart
20:05that's bringing you back to where you once were.
20:08You haven't lost your salvation.
20:09The Bible says you don't lose your salvation,
20:11but you can lose the joy of your salvation.
20:14Anybody know about that?
20:18So, the author ends this chapter now.
20:21We've looked at the peril we need to look out for,
20:24the people we need to look after,
20:25the past we need to look back to.
20:27Here's the last point, and we're finished.
20:29The process we need to look into.
20:31Notice what it says, and this is an interesting passage.
20:35Verse 16 through 19.
20:36For who, having heard, rebelled?
20:38Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt,
20:41led by Moses?
20:42Now, with whom was he angry 40 years?
20:45Was it not with those who sinned,
20:46whose corpses fell in the wilderness?
20:48And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest,
20:51but to those who did not obey?
20:52So, we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
20:56Now, I don't know if you've looked at your Bible,
20:58but there's a lot of question marks in that passage.
21:00There's six questions, five, perhaps six,
21:02if you read it in the original language.
21:05Now, what are these questions?
21:06It's interesting.
21:07There's three sets of two questions,
21:10and in the three sets of two questions,
21:12one question asks the question,
21:14and the next question answers the question.
21:17You say, Pastor Jeremiah,
21:18how can you answer a question with another question?
21:21We do it all the time.
21:24Are you going to eat your peas?
21:27Do you have any idea how many people would be so thankful
21:30if they could just have a little of those peas to eat
21:32all over the world who aren't hungry?
21:34You know who are good at asking questions
21:36to answer questions?
21:38Women.
21:41Mothers.
21:42They're tremendous at it.
21:44It's sort of an indoor sport with them.
21:49And so, don't be so hard on the writer of Hebrews.
21:52He's going to ask three questions,
21:54and he's going to answer them with three questions.
21:58First of all, he says in the first set of questions
22:00that in situations like we've described today,
22:03we often move from information to insubordination.
22:07Question number one,
22:08who having heard rebelled?
22:11They heard, and they rebelled.
22:13Answer to question number one,
22:16was it not all whom Moses led out of Egypt?
22:19Of course.
22:23Second set of questions,
22:24from insubordination to iniquity.
22:27Question number two,
22:29with whom was God angry for 40 years?
22:32Answer,
22:33was it not those who sinned,
22:35whose corpses fell in the wilderness?
22:37Of course.
22:41Question number three,
22:42we've gone from information to insubordination,
22:45from insubordination to iniquity,
22:49and the third set of questions
22:50takes us from iniquity to immovability.
22:54Question number three,
22:55to whom did he swear
22:56that they should not enter his rest?
22:59Answer,
23:00to those who did not obey.
23:02And the word obey here is an incredible word.
23:05It is a word which means obstinance.
23:08It means they did not just not obey.
23:11Their hearts had been so hardened,
23:13they didn't even hear.
23:14They had no desire to obey.
23:16Now, watch again the progression.
23:17From information to insubordination.
23:20I won't do what you tell me.
23:22From insubordination to iniquity,
23:24it becomes more hardened in our hearts,
23:26and from iniquity to immovability.
23:28When you get to the third set of questions,
23:30you can no longer respond,
23:32because your heart has been so hardened
23:35that the information of the Word of God
23:37no longer penetrates your heart.
23:40And apart from an intervention by the Spirit of God
23:43to break that heart open,
23:46you've passed your today,
23:49and you're in that awful place called tomorrow.
23:54And so, the passage ends with this word,
23:57so we see they could not enter in because of unbelief.
24:01The evil heart of unbelief.
24:04Hebrews chapter 3, verses 7 through 19 is about this.
24:10In the Christian life,
24:11it's not how you start that matters.
24:15It's how you finish.
24:18And I want to tell you people,
24:20I want to finish strong.
24:23I want to come across the finish line
24:25with my hands up high,
24:26screaming at the top of my lungs.
24:29Hallelujah.
24:29Praise God.
24:30I'm home.
24:32I don't want to be a casualty
24:34in the last years of my life.
24:36I don't want to let anything
24:37that God has done in my life
24:39keep me from believing
24:40that he has still much more to give.
24:42The land of Canaan is filled with promise.
24:45And if that's true for me,
24:46it ought to be true for all of us.
24:48Today, if you do not harden your heart,
24:52receive the message of Christ.
24:54For those of you who are not Christians,
24:56today is the day you should receive Christ.
24:58And for those of you who are Christians
24:59who have allowed the cares of this world
25:02and the deceitfulness of riches
25:03and all those other thorns
25:04that grow up along the way
25:06to squelch God's work in your life,
25:08the very fact that you're hearing this message
25:10and you're open to do something about it
25:12is a testimony to the fact
25:14that God is still at work in your life.
25:16And today is the day for you to say,
25:20okay, Lord God, I will do it.
25:23I will respond.
