00:00:00Go ahead and open up to the book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, and once you're there,
00:00:06I want you to go to chapter 3. The title of tonight's message, you can note down,
00:00:12is Encountering the Eternal. And tonight, we are going to be considering what I believe
00:00:21is a key foundational text to our faith. And my reasoning for saying this is because in this
00:00:31incredible text of Exodus 3, we see one of the oldest and also clearest instances of the eternal
00:00:41God revealing himself to man in a direct way. And in this manifestation of the Lord,
00:00:51to Moses, we learn so much about the nature of the eternal and supreme being that we refer to as
00:01:03God. And tonight, Lord willing, we will learn many things together, but chiefly, we will see the nature
00:01:12and some of the attributes of God on full display. And if you have never done a deep dive
00:01:20into the attributes of God and studying the nature of God, I would really challenge you to do so.
00:01:27Everyone should do this at multiple points in their life. Go and study the attributes of God
00:01:34specifically. This is something that will benefit your faith in such a tremendous way. And you and I,
00:01:43we should seek to understand the nature and attributes of the God that we get to know and serve. We
00:01:50should
00:01:51know him well. We should know what he's like. And certainly, we see the nature and attributes of God on
00:01:59full display as we consider the totality of the scriptures. And it is by the scriptures that you and I
00:02:07can even
00:02:08know who he is and know who he is and what he is like. This is important because if we
00:02:13want to think
00:02:14rightly about God, we must think biblically about God. It is the only way.
00:02:23If we fail to do this, if we develop ideas about God that are not rooted in scripture,
00:02:31well, then we will have made for ourselves a false God. God would look at the God that we made
00:02:39by doing
00:02:39that and say, that's not me. That's not what I'm like. I've revealed myself in my word. You should go
00:02:46check it out. Now, with that being said, there are certainly some extremely helpful books out there
00:02:55that compile the scriptures about the nature and attributes of God that tell us and show us what
00:03:02it means when God says he is holy or what it means when he reveals himself as omnipotent, all-powerful,
00:03:11and so on and so forth. Some of those books, if this is something that is of interest to you,
00:03:16some of these books that have blessed my life in this area of study would be The Knowledge of the
00:03:21Holy
00:03:21by A.W. Tozer. I would encourage everyone, if you're going to read any of these books, this is the
00:03:27smallest of the bunch, and it will radically bless you. The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer.
00:03:35There's also Knowing God by J.I. Packer. There's also The Attributes of God, which is kind of an
00:03:41extended version of The Knowledge of the Holy, also written by A.W. Tozer. And then there's The
00:03:47Attributes of God by A.W. Pink. Now, I suppose if your first and middle initial is A.W., well,
00:03:57then
00:03:57you're halfway on your way to being a Bible commentator, or you're halfway to making a good root beer.
00:04:04There's no in-between, I guess. That's your calling. But tonight, we're going to be diving into
00:04:11Moses' encounter with the eternal God and learn about what God reveals to Moses about his own
00:04:20nature. And though we're going to talk about Moses and we're going to learn from Moses, the focus of
00:04:28tonight's text, make no mistake, is the Lord himself. He is the focus. And this moment that
00:04:38Moses has with the Lord, this encounter with God Almighty, would have definitely been awesome for him
00:04:46to experience. But it can and it should be equally as awesome for us tonight in diving into God's Word
00:04:55about this experience if we really see it for what it is. So I'd love for you to stand with
00:05:01me as we
00:05:02read the Word together. Exodus 3, we're going to be reading from verse 1 through verse 15. And I'll go
00:05:09ahead and take it. You guys just follow along in your Bibles or on the screens. Verse 1.
00:05:17Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the
00:05:25flock
00:05:25to the back of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord
00:05:31appeared to
00:05:32him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked and behold, the bush was
00:05:39burning with
00:05:39fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight,
00:05:47why the bush does not burn. So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to
00:05:53him
00:05:54from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, here I am. Then he said,
00:06:02do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy
00:06:09ground. Moreover, he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
00:06:17and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. And the
00:06:25Lord said,
00:06:26I have surely seen the oppression of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry,
00:06:31because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them
00:06:38out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a good and large
00:06:45land,
00:06:45to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the
00:06:53Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. Now therefore behold the cry of the
00:07:00children of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians
00:07:07oppressed them. Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people,
00:07:14the children of Israel, out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, who am I that I should go to
00:07:21Pharaoh
00:07:22and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? So he said, I will certainly be with
00:07:28you,
00:07:28and this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you. When you have brought the people out
00:07:33of Egypt,
00:07:34you shall serve God on this mountain. Then Moses said to God, indeed, when I come to the children
00:07:41of Israel and say to them, the God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to
00:07:46me, what is his
00:07:47name? What shall I say to them? And God said to Moses, I am who I am. And he said,
00:07:56thus you shall say
00:07:57to the children of Israel, I am has sent me to you. Moreover, God said to Moses, thus you shall
00:08:05say to
00:08:06the children of Israel, the Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the
00:08:13God of
00:08:13Jacob has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations. Let's
00:08:22pray
00:08:22together. Father, we come to you tonight, and we know that it is your delight to reveal more of
00:08:31yourself to us as we have your word open. God, I pray that our minds and our hearts would be
00:08:38attuned
00:08:38to your voice as you have spoken through your word. Lord, please show us more of who you are. Take
00:08:45us
00:08:46deeper in our knowledge of you. Take us deeper in our relationship with you. We delight to know you.
00:08:54Lord, this is your time. We dedicate it unto you. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. You may be
00:09:02seated.
00:09:04If you're taking notes tonight, you can note down our first of four points is what we see in verses
00:09:10one through six, which is an awesome appearing, an awesome appearing. Now, I know we just read these
00:09:18verses, but I believe that repetition is key. This is something I teach the junior hires. We repeat
00:09:24things oftentimes. So let's repeat reading these first six verses. Look back down in your Bibles once
00:09:30more. Now, Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led
00:09:37the
00:09:37flock to the back of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the
00:09:43Lord
00:09:43appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked and behold, the
00:09:48bush was
00:09:49burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this
00:09:55great sight, why the bush does not burn. So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God
00:10:02called
00:10:03to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, here I am. Then he
00:10:09said, do not
00:10:10draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet for the place where you stand is holy ground.
00:10:17Moreover, he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the
00:10:22God of
00:10:23Jacob. And Moses hid his face for he was afraid to look upon God. And so we pick it up
00:10:31here in this
00:10:31third chapter of Exodus, but there's much that has already taken place leading up to this moment.
00:10:38Here in chapter three, we find the infamous man of God, Moses, in the land of Midian.
00:10:47But we must ask, what is Moses doing in Midian? Well, Moses has fled to Midian out of fear for
00:10:55his own
00:10:55life. Prior to this season of Moses' life in Midian, he dwelt in Egypt. He was raised in the
00:11:04most powerful household in all of Egypt, the household of Pharaoh. And at some point,
00:11:12Moses came to understand while being in Egypt, that he was not himself an Egyptian. He came to
00:11:18understand that he was a Hebrew, just like his brethren that were enduring the brutal slavery
00:11:27and persecution from the Egyptian taskmasters. And so it comes to pass that one day, while Moses is
00:11:36out and about, he observes the burdens of his brethren, and he sees a taskmaster abusing a Hebrew
00:11:46slave. And so the text tells us that Moses looks one way, he looks the other way, and then he
00:11:55proceeds
00:11:55to kill the taskmaster and bury him in the sand. And all seemed fine until the next day, when Moses
00:12:04goes
00:12:05out and about again, and he sees two Hebrew men fighting with each other. And he intervenes. He tries to
00:12:13get
00:12:13them to break it up. And one of the men calls to Moses and says, who made you a prince
00:12:19and judge over
00:12:20us? Do you intend to kill me like you killed the Egyptian yesterday? And upon hearing this, Moses is
00:12:29filled with fear because he knows that what he did is clearly known by others. And word about what Moses
00:12:38had done, Moses had done reached the ears of Pharaoh. And so the king of Egypt seeks to kill Moses.
00:12:44And so Moses,
00:12:46he flees for his own life, and he ends up in Midian. Moses was 40 years old upon his arrival
00:12:54in Midian, and he
00:12:56would dwell in Midian for 40 more years until the Lord visits him here in Exodus 3. And so 80
00:13:06-year-old Moses is
00:13:07kind of minding his own business in Midian. He's now a married man. He's got children. He's got a job
00:13:15of shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro. But this secluded life was not God's plan for this
00:13:24man. God had much bigger things in mind. While Moses is out one day with Jethro's flock, the angel of
00:13:36the
00:13:36Lord appears to him. We must ask, though angels, they are certainly far from ordinary creatures,
00:13:47was this just an ordinary angel? The answer to that question is no. Well, was it some sort of archangel
00:13:57like Michael or Gabriel? The answer to that question is also no. This was not simply an angel of the
00:14:06Lord. This was the angel of the Lord. Make no mistake. This is the Lord God himself appearing to
00:14:16Moses in this moment. This is what is commonly referred to as a theophany. A theophany is a
00:14:24manifestation of God in a way that is tangible to human senses. We read about them throughout the
00:14:33Old Testament. And that's exactly what is happening here at the burning bush. This is God speaking to
00:14:41Moses. And this was a God-orchestrated and God-ordained moment. Moses was not necessarily
00:14:51trying to conjure up this moment. He's tending to the flock. It was God-orchestrated. It was God-initiated.
00:15:01And there's something to be said here. Because when God reveals himself, he is the one who initiates
00:15:09it by his own will. And he determines the means as to how he does so. And the gospel is
00:15:17no different.
00:15:18The manifestation of God to this world in the form of a human, the God-man, Christ Jesus,
00:15:27it was initiated by the will of God out of his love for humanity. Now, how did God choose to
00:15:36reveal
00:15:37himself to Moses in this moment? Well, it was by the means of a bush that was engulfed in flames,
00:15:46and yet
00:15:46the bush was not being consumed. And this miraculous and awesome sight that Moses sees,
00:15:56he takes note of it, and he's intrigued. He goes to check it out. And upon drawing near,
00:16:05the Lord calls out to him by name.
00:16:09I think it's important that we recognize God calls out to him by name.
00:16:14I believe that's a significant detail.
00:16:18And I believe that this speaks to God's intimate and acquainted knowledge of us personally.
00:16:26Not only does he know all the stars and call them all by name, the Bible tells us,
00:16:35he knows our name. He knows the number of hairs on our very head, the Bible tells us.
00:16:43He knows us in that personal way.
00:16:48You see, he's not this CEO type of God that speaks to his employees and not even knowing their names,
00:16:58but tells them like a grunt, like, hey, do this for me. I don't know who you are, but go
00:17:03do this for me.
00:17:05That is not the nature of our God. He knows us personally. He calls to us as the very one
00:17:14who made us and knows us by name. Jeremiah 1.5, such a beloved verse.
00:17:22The Lord tells Jeremiah, before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
00:17:28That's hard to wrap your mind around tonight. Good. It's supposed to be.
00:17:34Before you were born, I sanctified you. I ordained you a prophet to the nations.
00:17:42God's intimate knowledge of Jeremiah goes back to the womb.
00:17:48And that's hard to wrap our minds around.
00:17:50But this is important, that his knowledge of us, it precedes and it comes before his using of us.
00:18:01We are his sons and daughters and then his servants.
00:18:07He loves you not because of what you can do for him.
00:18:14He loves you because he loves you.
00:18:18He loves you because he's made you and you're his.
00:18:25And so nonetheless, Moses hears his name from the midst of the inflamed bush.
00:18:30And Moses has no other words other than, here I am.
00:18:37Now, as we'll see later, this wasn't necessarily Moses expressing this extreme willingness to go and do what God was
00:18:46calling him to do.
00:18:47Moses would be very hesitant and even resistant once God gave him his marching orders.
00:18:53This was not a, here I am, like what Isaiah told the Lord in Isaiah 6.8.
00:18:59When God says, whom shall I send?
00:19:02Who's going to go for us?
00:19:03And Isaiah says, pick me.
00:19:05Here I am.
00:19:06I'm right here.
00:19:08Send me, God.
00:19:11Moses' here I am is not quite like that.
00:19:16God responds to Moses and gives him a warning and a command.
00:19:22He tells the shepherd that was just out for a walk with the sheep, he says, don't come any closer.
00:19:30And while you're at it, take off your sandals.
00:19:34Why?
00:19:35Well, because Moses, the ground upon which you stand, it is holy ground.
00:19:42It was sacred.
00:19:45Now, was this ground holy because it was some sort of special dirt or something like that?
00:19:52Was this ground sacred because some California environmentalists had the land protected?
00:19:59For an endangered bug or something?
00:20:02No.
00:20:05Of course not.
00:20:06The dirt itself was just ordinary dirt.
00:20:12It's funny.
00:20:13I was having a conversation with a student recently in the junior high room.
00:20:18We were just talking.
00:20:19And we got to talking about one of the laws of physics, the law of conservation of mass.
00:20:24He's a smart kid, clearly.
00:20:26But the law of conservation of mass tells us that matter cannot be created nor destroyed.
00:20:31And so for this reason, we got to thinking, we got to brainstorm, and we said, why don't we start
00:20:36a business?
00:20:38Let's get some jars of dirt, some jars of ocean water, and let's go put them on eBay and advertise
00:20:46them as the same dirt and water that was around when Adam and Eve walked the earth.
00:20:54I think people would buy it.
00:20:56I think there might be something there.
00:21:00No, but in all seriousness, the ground, it was ordinary ground, and yet it had become extraordinary ground because of
00:21:10the presence of the Lord himself being there.
00:21:15God, who is holy, made the ground holy in this moment because he was there.
00:21:22Joshua had a similar experience with the Lord.
00:21:26In Joshua 5, verses 13 through 15, we read here,
00:21:31And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a
00:21:37man stood opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand.
00:21:42And Joshua went to him, and said to him, this is a very wise question given the moment.
00:21:48Are you for us or for our adversaries?
00:21:52So he said, no, but as the commander of the army of the Lord, I have now come.
00:21:59And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, what does my Lord say
00:22:06to his servant?
00:22:07Then the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, take your sandal off of your foot, for the place
00:22:15where you stand is holy.
00:22:16And Joshua did so.
00:22:19And so it's at this point that the Lord makes it clear to Moses who exactly he is speaking to.
00:22:27Moses was speaking to none other than the God of his fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
00:22:37and the God of Jacob.
00:22:38And when Moses is told this, when he realizes that he is speaking to the Lord himself, he rightly hides
00:22:47his face out of fear.
00:22:49But the Lord still had much, he still had much more to say to Moses.
00:22:54Our second point tonight is what we see in verses 7 through 9, which is the attentive almighty.
00:23:00Almighty, the attentive, almighty is, we see in verse 7.
00:23:07And the Lord said, I have surely seen the oppression of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard
00:23:13their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.
00:23:17So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up
00:23:23from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey.
00:23:30To the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the
00:23:37Jebusites.
00:23:38Now, therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the
00:23:45oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.
00:23:49Here's where the Lord makes Moses aware of how he is aware of the suffering of his people.
00:24:00The word that is used here is the word oppression.
00:24:04And this word oppression, it means affliction.
00:24:08It means misery.
00:24:11It means great suffering and distress.
00:24:16And the Lord, in speaking to Moses here, uses three key words to describe his intimate awareness of the suffering
00:24:27of his people, his intimate attentiveness.
00:24:32God tells Moses, I have seen the oppression of my people.
00:24:37I have heard their cry.
00:24:40I know their sorrows.
00:24:44God had seen, he had heard, and he had known what his people were going through.
00:24:51And though his people had been going through this season of brutal enslavement for many years,
00:24:59the Lord wanted to make it clear to Moses that he was not distant and far removed and disengaged from
00:25:07the suffering of his people.
00:25:12And it's tempting to at times, but we dare not think that the Lord is inattentive to our problems and
00:25:22our suffering.
00:25:23In the book of Isaiah chapter 40, we see verse 27, this very thing.
00:25:30God speaks to them, and he says, why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel?
00:25:35My way is hidden from the Lord, and my just claim is passed over by my God.
00:25:44Why aren't you paying attention, Lord?
00:25:47Don't you see?
00:25:50Have you not known?
00:25:52Have you not heard?
00:25:54The everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth,
00:25:58neither faints nor is weary.
00:26:00His understanding is unsearchable.
00:26:03He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might, he increases strength.
00:26:09Even the youth shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall,
00:26:15but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.
00:26:19They shall mount up with wings like eagles.
00:26:22They shall run and not be weary.
00:26:25They shall walk and not faint.
00:26:29He sees, he hears, he knows.
00:26:34And still today, God is not disengaged from our lives
00:26:40to where we suffer without him seeing us,
00:26:45to where we suffer without him hearing our cries,
00:26:49to where we suffer without him knowing what we are going through.
00:26:56We call out to a God that is aware and attentive to us,
00:27:03and he knows our suffering much more than we give him credit.
00:27:09The suffering servant of Isaiah 53, the Messiah, Jesus the Christ,
00:27:16being prophesied of here,
00:27:18tells us of him that he is despised and rejected by man,
00:27:23a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
00:27:28Oh, he understands suffering, all right.
00:27:32Our Lord even wept at the tomb of Lazarus.
00:27:37You ever thought about that?
00:27:40We learn in that text of John 11 that Jesus knew what he was going to do.
00:27:46And yet upon arriving at Lazarus' tomb, he weeps.
00:27:53I believe that is in the Bible for us to learn,
00:28:00that our God knows suffering.
00:28:03He knows grief.
00:28:05He knows what it's like.
00:28:09The book of Hebrews chapter 4 tells us that we do not call out to a high priest
00:28:13that cannot sympathize with us.
00:28:15He gets it.
00:28:20And so when we call upon him in times of distress,
00:28:23we are calling to the Almighty who is attentive to his beloved.
00:28:29Psalm 46, verse 1 says,
00:28:33God is our refuge and strength,
00:28:36a very present help in times of trouble.
00:28:39You want to know what it means?
00:28:40Very present?
00:28:41It means abundantly available.
00:28:43It means extremely close in proximity.
00:28:47This is God in the midst of our suffering.
00:28:51He is very present.
00:28:53He is near.
00:28:55He could not be closer, actually.
00:29:00It's us that need to wake up to this.
00:29:06Suffering, it clouds our vision.
00:29:11It causes us sometimes to not see things rightly,
00:29:14which is why we must place the word of God above our own feelings and emotions
00:29:19in those moments.
00:29:20And we say, I know I'm feeling this way,
00:29:23but God's word says he's very present in my difficulty.
00:29:34Psalm 145, verses 18 through 19 tell us that the Lord is near to all who call on him,
00:29:41to all who call upon him in truth.
00:29:44He will fulfill the desire of those who fear him.
00:29:49He will also hear their cry and save them.
00:29:52Now, those are some verses that you can desperately cling to in seasons of difficulty for sure.
00:30:01You see, the cries of God's people here in Exodus, they had reached his ears.
00:30:08Exodus 2, verses 23 through 25, just before our text of Exodus 3,
00:30:14the verses immediately preceding, tell us this.
00:30:17Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died.
00:30:20Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out.
00:30:25And their cry came up to God because of the bondage.
00:30:28So God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
00:30:35And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God acknowledged them.
00:30:42And you know what, what we see here, praise the Lord that he is a covenant-keeping God.
00:30:49Praise the Lord that he is faithful to do what he has said he is going to do.
00:30:55If he said it, he's going to do it.
00:30:57That's the bottom line.
00:30:59He's perfectly faithful.
00:31:01He has no instances of unfaithfulness.
00:31:04He is only faithful.
00:31:07He will keep his word.
00:31:08And because he has this perfect track record, he can be trusted.
00:31:15And it's truly, it's been my prayer that for those of you who are in need of it tonight,
00:31:20that you would just find an abundance of comfort in the fact that your God,
00:31:28he is aware and attentive to whatever it is you're facing.
00:31:36He knows.
00:31:38He hears your cry.
00:31:40He sees your struggle, and he's with you in it.
00:31:44And so take heart in his presence, which is near to you in the midst of life's fiery trials.
00:31:55In the book of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the furnace.
00:32:02And King Nebuchadnezzar is perplexed because he is told,
00:32:08there's a fourth, we threw three in the fire, there's four.
00:32:15And it was God standing with his servants, with his sons, and he stands with you in the midst of
00:32:22that fiery trial that you are facing.
00:32:26God had not abandoned his people in their hardship.
00:32:31Rather, he was with them, and he was at work to bring about a grand plan that no mind could
00:32:39conceive except for his.
00:32:42And this plan would be for his glory and for their good.
00:32:482 Corinthians 4.17 tells us that our light affliction, which is but for a moment, it's just in the
00:32:57grand scheme.
00:32:58I know when you're in these seasons, I totally get it.
00:33:02I've gone through them too.
00:33:04We all have, right?
00:33:05It feels like it just drags, and that there's no end in sight.
00:33:10And yet the word says it's but for a moment.
00:33:13But it is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.
00:33:21God is working it out for his glory.
00:33:23And then Romans 8.28, one of the most famous verses in the Bible, and for good reason,
00:33:29says that we know all things work together for good to those who love God,
00:33:36to those who are called according to his purpose.
00:33:39If you love God, and if you are called according to his purpose tonight,
00:33:45then it is God's business to work whatever you're facing, to work it out for your good.
00:33:52He will do it.
00:33:59I've told people, I love this verse so much, and it's such a comfort to me.
00:34:05I've told people that there's kind of like three phases to this verse.
00:34:10There's the phase where you're, it's before the trial,
00:34:14where maybe you're not in a trial tonight, you're in phase one.
00:34:18You read that verse, and you're like, that's great.
00:34:20That's good to know.
00:34:21Well, I'm going to need that.
00:34:24And then there's phase two.
00:34:27When you're in the fire, you're in the trial, and you've got to believe this.
00:34:34You have to.
00:34:36What other choice do you have?
00:34:39To give in to fear and anxiety and let your relationship with the Lord suffer as a result of the
00:34:47suffering that you're facing?
00:34:48You know, your relationship with him doesn't need to suffer when you're in suffering.
00:34:54In fact, the suffering itself could and should cause you to draw near to him.
00:35:02And so there's the phase two, being in the middle of the trial, and then what we love is there's
00:35:10the phase three, being on the other side of it and looking back and saying, wow.
00:35:20He did it.
00:35:22He did what he said he was going to do.
00:35:25He worked it out for my good.
00:35:31But God was not just attentive and aware.
00:35:34He was on the move.
00:35:36The Lord tells Moses in verse eight that he was coming down to deliver his people from their bondage, to
00:35:43deliver them from what they could not deliver themselves from, and to bring them into an abundantly blessed land.
00:35:54Now, our minds ought to go to the gospel of Jesus Christ right now, that the Lord himself intervened when
00:36:06it came to our sin situation that we got ourselves in.
00:36:12Then, God himself in the person of Christ came down to fix it.
00:36:21It's like the old saying, right?
00:36:22You want a job done right?
00:36:24Do it yourself.
00:36:25Maybe that originates with God.
00:36:28Probably not, obviously.
00:36:30But God says, hey, they're in a situation because of their sin.
00:36:34They can't fix it.
00:36:35No one else can fix it but me.
00:36:39And I'm not going to leave them in it.
00:36:42I'm going to go down.
00:36:44And I'm going to die for them.
00:36:47Yeah, they're unworthy.
00:36:50But I love them.
00:36:53God saw us in the pit of our own sin.
00:36:56The pit that we ourselves dug.
00:36:59And he didn't leave us there.
00:37:02He could have.
00:37:04And honestly, he would have been completely just in doing so.
00:37:10But that's not what he did.
00:37:12Instead, he heard our cry.
00:37:15And he responded with merciful deliverance.
00:37:20The book of Ephesians chapter 2, verses 4 through 7 tell us,
00:37:25But God, who was rich in mercy because of his great love with which he loved us,
00:37:31even when we were dead in trespasses,
00:37:34made us alive together with Christ.
00:37:37By grace, you have been saved.
00:37:39And raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
00:37:46that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace and his kindness toward us.
00:37:55In Christ Jesus.
00:37:58Yes.
00:37:59Thank you, Lord.
00:38:01While we were at our worst, Christ died for us.
00:38:05What a gospel this is.
00:38:07Our third point tonight, you can note it down, what we see in verses 10 through 12,
00:38:12is a divine dispatching.
00:38:15A divine dispatching.
00:38:17The text goes on to say in verse 10,
00:38:20Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh,
00:38:23that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.
00:38:27But Moses said to God,
00:38:29Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the children of Israel out of
00:38:34Egypt?
00:38:34So he said,
00:38:36I will certainly be with you,
00:38:38and this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you.
00:38:41When you have brought the people out of Egypt,
00:38:45you shall serve God on this mountain.
00:38:48You can almost imagine Moses up until this point,
00:38:52nodding his head in agreement with what God is saying about this grand plan,
00:38:58that God is going to deliver his people,
00:39:00because up until now, the Lord hasn't mentioned Moses' part in any of it.
00:39:05He's just been told what God's going to do.
00:39:08Here's where that changes.
00:39:10The Lord essentially tells him,
00:39:12Let's go, Mo.
00:39:13I am sending you to Pharaoh to deliver my people.
00:39:20And you can almost imagine Moses being like,
00:39:23Excuse me?
00:39:25I don't think I heard you right.
00:39:26I thought you said you were going to deliver your people, not me.
00:39:32Moses' true response to what God tells us,
00:39:36to what God tells him, excuse me,
00:39:38is actually a question.
00:39:40It's a pretty reasonable question if you ask me.
00:39:44His question is simply,
00:39:46Who am I that I should do this?
00:39:50And I'm not sure about you,
00:39:52but I can totally relate to Moses here.
00:39:56I have asked this question to the Lord many times in my life.
00:40:01Who am I, Lord?
00:40:04And I will likely ask him that question many more times in the future.
00:40:08I may have even asked him that question tonight before coming out here.
00:40:15Who am I to be standing here teaching you all?
00:40:22I don't know about you,
00:40:24but I can tend to feel so unworthy to be used by God.
00:40:29And that's true.
00:40:30I'm not worthy to be used by God,
00:40:32but he chooses to do it anyway.
00:40:37And sometimes I can feel so inadequate to be used by God.
00:40:44And honestly, that happens when I'm in the flesh.
00:40:48When I'm more focused on me than I am on what God can do
00:40:53and what he's capable of.
00:40:57There is a humility in asking the question,
00:41:00Who am I that I should, you fill in the blank,
00:41:03whatever it might be that God's calling you to do.
00:41:05There's a humility in that, but there's also a danger in it.
00:41:10And the danger is if you say,
00:41:13Who am I?
00:41:15And you don't move forward
00:41:17when God is calling you to move forward.
00:41:21In response to Moses' question,
00:41:25the Lord reassures him.
00:41:27He says,
00:41:28Moses, I'm going to be with you every step of the way.
00:41:31I will certainly be with you.
00:41:35And that's it.
00:41:37That's really all that Moses needed to hear.
00:41:41It's all the reassurance that we need as well.
00:41:45That the Lord, he goes with us.
00:41:48He goes before us.
00:41:50Matthew 28, verse 18 through 20.
00:41:53The Great Commission.
00:41:56And Jesus came and spoke to them,
00:41:58his disciples,
00:41:59saying,
00:41:59All authority has been given to me
00:42:02in heaven and on earth.
00:42:03Go, therefore,
00:42:05and make disciples of all the nations,
00:42:08baptizing them in the name of the Father
00:42:09and of the Son
00:42:10and of the Holy Spirit,
00:42:12teaching them to observe all the things
00:42:15that I have commanded you.
00:42:17And praise God,
00:42:18it doesn't stop right there.
00:42:20Because if it stopped right there,
00:42:22then we might rightfully feel insecure.
00:42:26But it doesn't.
00:42:28Jesus goes on to say,
00:42:30And lo, I am with you always,
00:42:33even to the end of the age.
00:42:35Amen.
00:42:36Even to the end of the world itself,
00:42:40he is with us
00:42:42in what he has called us to do.
00:42:46And now we're not going to get into them
00:42:48in great detail
00:42:49because of the amount of time we have left.
00:42:51But Moses would go on
00:42:53after verse 15.
00:42:55The text continues.
00:42:56And he would go on to hear more
00:42:58about what God was going to do.
00:43:00God would give him some more details.
00:43:03And he would go on
00:43:04to give the Lord excuses
00:43:08as to why he couldn't do it.
00:43:11And why God should find somebody else.
00:43:15Now Moses here,
00:43:17he had a case,
00:43:18he had a bad case
00:43:19of analysis paralysis.
00:43:21When you overanalyze
00:43:24to where you don't move.
00:43:27You're laughing
00:43:28because you probably know what it's like.
00:43:30I know what it's like.
00:43:33When you overanalyze
00:43:36and you just,
00:43:37you stay there
00:43:38and you never take a step of faith.
00:43:40when that's exactly
00:43:42what God is calling you to do.
00:43:46And I would argue
00:43:47that you'll never
00:43:50achieve great things
00:43:51in the kingdom
00:43:52if you overanalyze
00:43:54and you don't move forward.
00:43:58God uses those
00:43:59who walk in faith
00:44:00and trust him.
00:44:01And he gets glory through that.
00:44:05Moses was making the mistake
00:44:06of looking too much
00:44:08at himself
00:44:10and his own insufficiencies
00:44:13when he should have been
00:44:15trusting in the Lord.
00:44:17The Lord who makes
00:44:18the insufficient sufficient.
00:44:21The Bible tells us
00:44:22in 2 Corinthians
00:44:24chapter 3
00:44:25verses 5 through 6
00:44:27not that we are sufficient
00:44:28of ourselves
00:44:29to think of anything
00:44:31as being from ourselves
00:44:32but our sufficiency
00:44:34is from God
00:44:35who also made us sufficient
00:44:37as ministers
00:44:38of the new covenant
00:44:39not of the letter
00:44:41but of the spirit
00:44:42for the letter kills
00:44:43but the spirit gives life.
00:44:46God makes the insufficient
00:44:48sufficient
00:44:49for what he's calling
00:44:50them to do.
00:44:51Maybe you've heard
00:44:52the phrase
00:44:53God does not
00:44:54call the equip
00:44:54he equips
00:44:56the called.
00:44:57All Moses needed
00:45:00was the Lord
00:45:02and the Lord
00:45:03had promised him that.
00:45:04It was God's business
00:45:06to equip him.
00:45:08It was Moses' business
00:45:10to trust
00:45:12and take God
00:45:13at his word
00:45:14that God would be
00:45:16with him
00:45:16through it all.
00:45:17Our fourth
00:45:18and final point
00:45:19tonight
00:45:19you can note down
00:45:20is what we see
00:45:21in verses 13
00:45:22through 15
00:45:23which is
00:45:24a self-existent
00:45:26savior.
00:45:29a self-existent
00:45:31savior.
00:45:32We see in verse 13
00:45:34whoops
00:45:36we see in verse 13
00:45:38then Moses
00:45:39said to God
00:45:41indeed
00:45:41when I come
00:45:42to the children
00:45:43of Israel
00:45:43and say to them
00:45:44the God
00:45:45of your fathers
00:45:46has sent me
00:45:47to you
00:45:47and they say
00:45:48to me
00:45:48what is his name
00:45:49what shall I say
00:45:51to them
00:45:51and God said
00:45:53to Moses
00:45:53I am
00:45:54who I am
00:45:55and he said
00:45:56thus you shall say
00:45:58to the children
00:45:58of Israel
00:45:59I am
00:46:00has sent me
00:46:01to you
00:46:03moreover
00:46:03God said to Moses
00:46:05thus you shall say
00:46:06to the children
00:46:07of Israel
00:46:07the Lord God
00:46:09of your fathers
00:46:09the God
00:46:10of Abraham
00:46:11the God
00:46:11of Isaac
00:46:12and the God
00:46:12of Jacob
00:46:13has sent me
00:46:14to you
00:46:14this is my name
00:46:16forever
00:46:16and this
00:46:17is my memorial
00:46:18to all
00:46:19generations
00:46:21now we've
00:46:22already
00:46:23so far
00:46:24in our time
00:46:25together
00:46:25we've already
00:46:26said so much
00:46:27about the nature
00:46:28and attributes
00:46:29of God
00:46:31we've mentioned
00:46:32that he is a God
00:46:33who reveals himself
00:46:35we've mentioned
00:46:36that he is a God
00:46:37who is holy
00:46:38that he is
00:46:39faithful
00:46:40to keep his word
00:46:41that he is aware
00:46:43and attentive
00:46:46and that he is present
00:46:48here is where
00:46:49we see one more
00:46:51key attribute
00:46:52of the Lord
00:46:53on display
00:46:54as it is revealed
00:46:56in his proper name
00:46:59being given
00:47:00to Moses
00:47:02contrary to what
00:47:03some might say
00:47:05God
00:47:06is not his name
00:47:08it's his title
00:47:10it's not wrong
00:47:11to refer to him
00:47:12as God
00:47:12of course
00:47:13it's just not
00:47:13his proper
00:47:14personal name
00:47:16the word God
00:47:17in the Hebrew
00:47:18is Elohim
00:47:19and it
00:47:20translates to mean
00:47:22the supernatural
00:47:23divine agent
00:47:25being
00:47:26that originated
00:47:27and rules
00:47:29over the universe
00:47:32and in his
00:47:33hesitation
00:47:34to do
00:47:35what the Lord
00:47:36was calling him
00:47:37to do
00:47:37Moses
00:47:38he poses
00:47:39a hypothetical
00:47:40situation
00:47:41yet
00:47:42somewhat of a
00:47:43likely hypothetical
00:47:44situation
00:47:46he says
00:47:47okay Lord
00:47:48what if I go
00:47:50to the children
00:47:50of Israel
00:47:51that you're
00:47:51sending me to
00:47:52what if they
00:47:53ask for your
00:47:54name
00:47:55what do I
00:47:57tell them
00:47:58and the Lord
00:47:59doesn't rebuke
00:48:00Moses for asking
00:48:01this question
00:48:01but rather just
00:48:03simply gives him
00:48:04his name
00:48:05the Lord
00:48:06tells Moses
00:48:07that his name
00:48:08is I am
00:48:09who I am
00:48:17Yahweh
00:48:18or Jehovah
00:48:21this is what's
00:48:21known as the
00:48:23Tetragrammaton
00:48:26you might think
00:48:27of a
00:48:27you and I
00:48:27might think of it
00:48:28as a bit of an
00:48:29odd name
00:48:31because it doesn't
00:48:31really sound like
00:48:32a name to us
00:48:35but it is
00:48:36nonetheless
00:48:36the name
00:48:37of our God
00:48:38his name
00:48:39is Yahweh
00:48:41this was the
00:48:43name that
00:48:44Moses was
00:48:45to tell
00:48:46the people
00:48:47if and when
00:48:48they asked
00:48:49what the name
00:48:50of God
00:48:51who was sending
00:48:52Moses was
00:48:53and verse 15
00:48:54tells us
00:48:55that this
00:48:56has been
00:48:57his name
00:48:57forever
00:48:58and will
00:48:59be his name
00:49:00forever
00:49:02but the
00:49:03proper name
00:49:04of God
00:49:04I am
00:49:05who I am
00:49:06it tells us
00:49:07some key
00:49:08things actually
00:49:09about his
00:49:10very nature
00:49:11from his
00:49:13name alone
00:49:14we can
00:49:14understand
00:49:15that he
00:49:16is self
00:49:17existent
00:49:18self
00:49:19sufficient
00:49:20and eternal
00:49:22what do we
00:49:23mean when we
00:49:24use terms
00:49:24like that
00:49:25well firstly
00:49:28that God
00:49:29has no
00:49:30origin
00:49:31he has
00:49:32no beginning
00:49:34he has
00:49:35always been
00:49:36and he
00:49:38will always
00:49:39be
00:49:40he is the
00:49:41creator
00:49:42of all
00:49:43things
00:49:44but is
00:49:45himself
00:49:47uncreated
00:49:49there's
00:49:50never been
00:49:50a moment
00:49:52where he
00:49:52did not
00:49:53exist
00:49:53and there
00:49:54never will
00:49:55be a moment
00:49:55where he
00:49:56does not
00:49:56exist
00:49:57he is
00:49:59that's it
00:50:01he is
00:50:03that's what he
00:50:04tells Moses
00:50:05I am
00:50:07he has
00:50:08existed in
00:50:09infinity of that
00:50:10direction from
00:50:11Genesis 1
00:50:121 imagine
00:50:13infinity in that
00:50:13direction
00:50:16and over here
00:50:17revelation 22
00:50:1821
00:50:19infinity in that
00:50:20direction he will
00:50:21exist
00:50:22he is
00:50:23eternal
00:50:23he is
00:50:24uncreated
00:50:24this is
00:50:26the God
00:50:26that we
00:50:26know and
00:50:27serve
00:50:28that we
00:50:29get to
00:50:29approach
00:50:30because of
00:50:31the blood
00:50:31of Christ
00:50:36he is
00:50:36completely
00:50:37independent
00:50:39from the
00:50:40boundaries
00:50:40of time
00:50:42he dwells
00:50:43outside of
00:50:44those limits
00:50:48unlike us
00:50:49and everything
00:50:50that we
00:50:50know
00:50:51he exists
00:50:52within
00:50:53himself
00:50:56this is a
00:50:57mind-blowing
00:50:58thing for
00:50:59us
00:51:00A.W.
00:51:01Tozer
00:51:01says
00:51:02in the
00:51:03knowledge of
00:51:04the holy
00:51:04one of those
00:51:04books I
00:51:05recommended
00:51:05at the
00:51:06beginning
00:51:06he says
00:51:08a more
00:51:08positive
00:51:09assertion
00:51:10of selfhood
00:51:10could not
00:51:11be imagined
00:51:12than those
00:51:13words of
00:51:14God to
00:51:14Moses
00:51:15I am
00:51:16that I
00:51:16am
00:51:17everything
00:51:18God is
00:51:19everything
00:51:20that is
00:51:20God
00:51:21is set
00:51:21forth
00:51:22in that
00:51:22unqualified
00:51:23declaration
00:51:24of
00:51:25independent
00:51:26being
00:51:27and as
00:51:28much as
00:51:29the question
00:51:30that
00:51:31some have
00:51:32thought
00:51:33before
00:51:33who
00:51:34created
00:51:34God
00:51:35as much
00:51:36as it
00:51:37might feel
00:51:37natural
00:51:37for us
00:51:38to ask
00:51:39that
00:51:39because
00:51:40everything
00:51:40we know
00:51:41has had
00:51:43a beginning
00:51:45it's an
00:51:45improper
00:51:46question
00:51:47to ask
00:51:49because
00:51:50of the
00:51:50fact
00:51:51that
00:51:51God
00:51:51is
00:51:51self
00:51:52existent
00:51:54uncreated
00:51:54and

00:51:58he addresses
00:51:59this in

00:52:01and he

00:52:04I would
00:52:04throw in

00:52:05too
00:52:05sometimes

00:52:08they're
00:52:09God

00:52:11sometimes
00:52:11ask
00:52:12who
00:52:13made
00:52:13God
00:52:14the
00:52:14clearest
00:52:15answer
00:52:15is that
00:52:16God
00:52:16never
00:52:17needed
00:52:17to be
00:52:17made
00:52:18because
00:52:19he
00:52:19always
00:52:19was
00:52:19there
00:52:20he
00:52:20exists

00:52:29but

00:52:32sustaining
00:52:33necessary
00:52:34way
00:52:35necessary
00:52:35that is
00:52:36in the

00:52:37that
00:52:37God
00:52:37does
