00:00Oh, this is tense.
00:02Today on Scam Interceptors.
00:054.7 Bitcoin, so £370,000.
00:09That belongs to you. It's currently frozen.
00:12Oh, my God.
00:14We race to rescue a man from losing big to a cryptocurrency scam.
00:19So if the target is about to transfer the money,
00:21there's no way that we'd make it there in time.
00:23It's £12,845.
00:25Oh, dear. Oh, no.
00:27This is going to be tight.
00:40I'm calling you from blockchain support team.
00:44In the Glasgow hub.
00:46Here we go. Crypto recovery scam group.
00:49Well in action here.
00:51We're working with ethical hackers Jim Browning and Agent G9.
00:56They've given us access to the phone calls and computer screens of a group of scammers.
01:03So we know this group claimed to be calling from the blockchain,
01:06which is the ledger of all cryptocurrency transactions online.
01:09From watching these scammers, we've learned that they're ringing people that they know have at some point invested in cryptocurrency,
01:18pretending to be from genuine crypto finance website blockchain.com.
01:24They tell this person that they found a cryptocurrency wallet has huge value and it's somehow associated to their name.
01:31So you can see why he would be quite hooked in by this.
01:35These scammers don't have access to anyone's crypto accounts.
01:39It's a lie to steal their money.
01:42The reason of this phone call is because you have a balance of 4.7 bitcoins registered on the blockchain
01:48system,
01:49which at the moment is in a frozen status.
01:51We've traced the scammers to Tirana, Albania.
01:55And this scammer has a man somewhere in the UK on the line.
02:00We have detected a lot of unauthorized login attempts from different IP locations.
02:08Poland, Lithuania.
02:11We've decided to call you directly as the owner.
02:14One bitcoin today is around £78,000.
02:17And you don't have one of them, you have 4.7.
02:20So £370,000.
02:23OK?
02:26The scammer claims this man's investment is currently valued at nearly £400,000.
02:31And that this huge sum is at risk.
02:34The reason why you lost money before £25,000 is that you didn't have the right information.
02:43In this guy's case, he actually admitted to the scammer that he invested £25,000 into cryptocurrency
02:50and he has been scammed and he lost all that money.
02:54So the poor man has already lost a staggering amount of money.
02:57Now he's got someone claiming to help him and we know they're doing the complete opposite.
03:03That's it.
03:04The man is understandably drawn in by the scammer, hoping that what she claims is true.
03:13Well, we need to get this man some help before he gets hooked in too far.
03:18There is some information about him on the scammer's screen.
03:23We got one phone number, but he's on that at the moment talking to them.
03:27Which means he's unlikely to answer it if we call.
03:32But we also have the man's full name.
03:35His first name or second name?
03:37I think it's actually...
03:38OK.
03:38We think his first name is Jev, so the team start looking for alternative contact details for him.
03:45You are going to have to reactivate your account as the person who owns it.
03:50I have provided to you with a meeting invitation because I would like to also show you the account.
03:59So could you please check your email?
04:03This is an astonishing new scammer tactic.
04:06She wants Jev to join her in an online meeting where she's using a photo that is not her.
04:13On this meeting, she will show Jev doctored evidence of nearly £400,000 of crypto she says belongs to him.
04:22What I think is really clever about the way these scammers do this is that you can share your screen
04:26in those video meetings.
04:27It's actually very, very easy when you think about it.
04:31100%.
04:31Yes, I'm Rachel Smith.
04:34Oh, OK.
04:36A bad connection means we've lost Jev's audio.
04:40My mother is from Turkey, my father is from England.
04:44I do speak Turkish.
04:47Ah, so we might also be cousins.
04:55This scammer is working hard to gain Jev's trust.
04:59Yes, you need to click on join call.
05:04He has now joined the online meeting with the scammer.
05:08The main purpose of this meeting is to show you your account, right?
05:14This is the official website, blockchain.com.
05:18The method they use to demonstrate to people this supposed value being associated to them
05:23is to go onto blockchain.com, which is a perfectly legitimate cryptocurrency company,
05:29and use their product, which is called Blockchain Explorer.
05:31It's basically like an encyclopedia of all the cryptocurrency transactions out there.
05:35Now, every single wallet always starts with BC1 and the other part is unique.
05:41No individual name is visible on the crypto wallet, which makes the scammer's job easier.
05:47Cryptocurrency wallets are a collection of random letters and numbers.
05:50No one's ever going to be able to go, oh, no, that's not my wallet.
05:52Now, we are going to search for your wallet.
05:55What they do is they copy and paste a wallet address.
05:57They put it in to the search bar.
05:59I'll click in it.
06:00And it shows a wallet that has a value of almost 400,000 pounds.
06:05That belongs to you.
06:07And you can see that 4.7 Bitcoin around 369,000 pounds is currently frozen.
06:15We've realised today that it's the same wallet they're showing people every single time,
06:19because they know it's clearly got this value.
06:21Yes.
06:22But you're telling me all the big information, but all I know, you could be the hacker.
06:28We can now hear more of Jev's side of the call.
06:31He's beginning to question the scammer, but she's not letting him go.
06:36She wants him to make a supposedly refundable reactivation payment.
06:42Now, to reactivate the account, you need to verify your identity by using a certified and regulated crypto exchange platform.
06:52The reactivation amount will be around 0.01% or 0.0047 Bitcoins, which will be around 368 pounds.
07:07It's just a temporary transaction, and you will get it back.
07:13This is not true.
07:14The scammer is trying to steal 368 pounds from Jev.
07:19And Nick, who's been monitoring these scammers for some time, thinks she won't stop at that.
07:24What they'll be going for will be 3.5% of 367,000 pounds.
07:31It's 12,845 pounds.
07:34Oh, my gosh.
07:37There's a vast amount of Jev's money on the line.
07:40To reactivate the account, we're not going to use the platform that you have used before.
07:46We can use a platform, for example, Revolut, because it's on online banking, but has the option to support cryptos.
07:55It sounds like the banking app that he uses is not one she wants to go down the route of.
07:59You have to complete a suppositive transaction from an account of yours to this platform that you are using on
08:06blockchain.
08:06The scammer wants Jev to open a bank account with online money platform Revolut and transfer the bogus 368 pounds
08:16reactivation payment into there.
08:19The scammer will then tell him to move the money from there into his blockchain account to unfreeze the supposed
08:27368,000 pounds in it.
08:31But this will in fact be a scammer account and Jev's 368 pounds will be gone.
08:39So we might have a little bit of time if he's setting up a new account.
08:43Mm-hmm.
08:44The team hasn't yet found any other contact information for Jev.
08:49I have done a search on the number and I have, one, found that he has been breached on Facebook.
08:56And two, we've got his current WhatsApp picture.
09:00Fantastic.
09:00I don't unfortunately have an area of where he's based.
09:03Let's have a look.
09:04We hope Jev's Facebook profile might provide his location to dispatch our ground interceptors who are standing by to help.
09:13There's a lot of dogs. Is that a business?
09:16We keep hunting for more information.
09:19So what is your decision? You would like to proceed with the verification and the transaction?
09:25Okay. Amazing.
09:28It sounds like Jev has agreed to set up a new bank account to make the online money transfer.
09:35Now, I would like you to share the screen.
09:39The scammer wants to watch Jev's every move on his computer to steal as much of his private information as
09:45possible.
09:46But she needs him to share his screen with her on the online meeting.
09:51We need to find Jev fast.
09:54I think I've got him.
09:56Yeah, that could definitely be him.
09:58City of London.
10:00From his online business profile LinkedIn, we now think Jev may work in London.
10:06So, we do some more digging.
10:09Contact information.
10:10Is there anything else there?
10:12Okay, so you did it.
10:15We've got his computer here, guys.
10:16He's sharing his screen.
10:17Oh, no way.
10:18So now everything that's on his screen, she can now view.
10:21If he does go onto his banking, this is where the danger is, isn't it?
10:24Quite right.
10:25Nothing more.
10:26He's going to expose everything, all his financial details.
10:30And he's on his way there.
10:31Yeah, he's on his way there.
10:32Get up there, see if you get any more details.
10:35Oh, Bromley Council, I saw there as one of his shortcuts.
10:38The team immediately start looking for people with Jev's full name in the London borough of Bromley,
10:43where we think he may live.
10:45Could you please go back on the meeting?
10:47So, I found a possible address.
10:49If this is the same guy...
10:52It's going to be a long way for GIs to get to.
10:54Probably be a good hour.
10:55At least, yeah.
10:57We may have an address for Jev, but his scam is progressing fast.
11:02Our nearest ground interceptors, or GIs, aren't going to get to him in time.
11:07We need another way to get hold of him.
11:10I suggest combing his Facebook for family.
11:12Can't see if we can get any leads that way.
11:15Now, you need to install Revolut on your phone.
11:20So, open your email on the phone as well, please, so we can connect there.
11:27Oh, wow, he's given access to his phone as well.
11:29Oh.
11:30Jev has now joined the meeting on his phone and shared that screen with the scammer.
11:35Surge on the bottom.
11:38It'll move probably a lot faster on the mobile, won't it?
11:41Yeah.
11:42Click on install.
11:44Signing up for the Revolut account on his mobile will be quick and will enable the scammer to steal Jev's
11:50money sooner.
11:51We're drawing blanks finding family members, local businesses or neighbours to contact Jev to pull him out of this scam.
11:59Oh, wow, it's quite rural. There's only two roads there with houses on them.
12:04We need to stop Jev's scam without alerting the scammers to the fact that we are watching their every move.
12:10We've got to be careful how we deal with this because this group, we're onto them and I think they're
12:16a little bit suspect.
12:17Yeah, I mean, we've certainly stopped at least a few of their scams.
12:20The danger with that is if they know that someone's onto them, they can tighten their security, potentially kick us
12:26out and we can't help anyone else.
12:28That's it, yeah. So, we need to stay as ninja as we possibly can in the way that we intersect.
12:34I think sending the GIs is going to be better than trying to bombard anything on the screens.
12:38That's it. Because she's now got access to both computer and phone.
12:42Yeah. She'll see every message, she'll see our phone numbers if we try and contact this man.
12:47We dispatch the ground interceptors to what we hope is Jev's address.
12:53All right, so we've got some information from the hub that is a possible crypto scam.
12:58You can see how far that is.
13:00Harriet and Mia have an hour's journey across London, but Jev's scam is progressing faster than that.
13:08Right now, she's got him to download Revolut.
13:11OK.
13:12It's not long before he is signing up to an account with Revolut.
13:16But thankfully, as he is entering personal information, their automatic security features try to protect him.
13:28My screen went black right now. Just read what it says in there and I'll help you with what to
13:32write.
13:34She is getting him to talk her through what he needs to input to create an account.
13:39This is not great.
13:40No, it's not.
13:42We need our ground interceptors to get to Jev.
13:46They're coming to sort of this area around here.
13:4946 minutes.
13:51I think it's 20 miles an hour most of the way.
13:54OK, create a passcode that you will remember.
13:58No.
13:59Don't do that.
14:01The scammer watches as Jev chooses a supposedly secret passcode.
14:07When you have to take the pictures of your document, the details have to be visible.
14:11Oh, goodness.
14:14It seems Jev is quickly moving closer towards losing his money.
14:18I think the traffic's going to start backing up.
14:22OK, so what's the latest on the GIs?
14:25They're at least 40 to 50 minutes away.
14:27I don't think we've got that long, Nick. What stage is he at?
14:29I mean, he's very close.
14:31He's one out of four steps through being finished setting up, basically.
14:34OK.
14:34If the address is correct, I know someone that is working in that area at the moment.
14:39Private investigator, Laura.
14:41I think she could at least get to the door and just tell him to shut the laptop, speak to
14:45us.
14:46Yeah, I think that's a good move.
14:47Right, let's get on to it.
14:50I'm calling in a favour from a trusted contact.
14:53A private investigator, Laura, who's been helping victims of fraud for over 10 years.
15:00Hey, Laura. So we're dealing with this scam group, which are doing fake crypto recovery.
15:07GIs are still on the wrong side of the river and they've got to get all the way to deepest
15:10South London.
15:11He's got the Revolut app. He's about to load that up with some cash, it looks like, and make a
15:17transfer,
15:18which obviously will go straight to the scammers.
15:21And also, we don't know he's at home.
15:22I'm hopeful that he is because he's on his desktop computer.
15:25Very good point.
15:26But that could be a work computer.
15:27It could be a laptop.
15:28It might be in the office and then we've got no idea where he is.
15:30Yeah, absolutely.
15:31We've managed to get an address which we're 90% sure is his, which I believe is quite close to
15:36where you might be at the moment.
15:38Yeah, no worries.
15:39What's the address?
15:40Hopefully at the ID point, if he uses a driver's...
15:43Oh, there we go. Well done, guys.
15:44Yes, we are definitely going to the right place.
15:45That's correct.
15:46Okay.
15:46Oh.
15:47From Jeff's shared phone screen of his new Revolut account, we have been able to confirm his address.
15:54Rav?
15:55Sorry, address is definitely correct.
15:57We're just not sure who's there.
15:58Okay.
15:58Right.
15:59The address that I'm going to send you is definitely correct.
16:01We just don't know if he's there at the moment.
16:04So, if you're able to go...
16:05Get your address.
16:06That would be amazing.
16:07Is that all right?
16:08Okay.
16:08We'll send you everything now.
16:10We will.
16:11Thanks, bye.
16:11Bye.
16:13Right, she's on her way.
16:14Oh, amazing.
16:16Laura thinks she's only ten minutes away.
16:20She's going to call us when she gets there.
16:23Which is just as well.
16:25Oh, it's staying even longer now.
16:29This is the part where you have to add the money.
16:32It was £368.
16:35It looks like they're up and running.
16:37Oh, wow, yeah, he's already at this stage.
16:39Yeah, he's got a screen open.
16:40What do you see on the screen?
16:41Oh, gosh.
16:42You can do it with easy bank transfer or card.
16:45Whatever is easier for you.
16:48This is going to be tight, isn't it?
16:49What options do you see right now?
16:53We have broken sound from Jev again.
16:57Okay.
16:58Yeah, I don't see nothing on your screen at the moment.
17:01He's getting paranoid about her being able to see his screen.
17:04If you want, I can send you a screenshot of what I see.
17:06She took a screen grab of her shared meeting to show this was blacked out, basically.
17:11I mean, the good thing is the suspicion is stalling the whole scam.
17:16Totally.
17:18Okay, you can see that the screen of your phone is black on the left side and then I can
17:23only see name not available.
17:26Come on, mate.
17:28Okay.
17:28I am not able to see that if you want, sir.
17:32I am not able to see that if you want, sir.
17:32I am not able to access my bank account.
17:33No, but you can show me anything, really, can't you?
17:38No, I can't.
17:39I cannot see my screen.
17:41Everything links to another thing, another step, and another step, which then allows my account to be next.
17:49I have explained to you since the beginning of...
17:51And this is my argument from that...
17:55But I said since the beginning of the process that the reactivation is in two steps.
18:00The verification, which you did verify yourself on Revolut, and then you have to step out...
18:05And this is what I'm not comfortable with doing.
18:08The scammer is working hard to ease Jeff's concerns.
18:13Yes, you can use EasyBank transfer or your debit card.
18:17Yes.
18:19Unfortunately, the scammer's just got him back on side.
18:22Oh!
18:23The amount has to be exactly $368.
18:26Jeff could be very close to transferring the money.
18:30Oh, gosh.
18:32Is Laura getting close by?
18:35Yeah, it's just...
18:36What I'm seeing on my phone, you can see the same thing on your side.
18:39But I said to you, you can stop sharing the screen any time you want.
18:42My intention here is not to have your details.
18:47Hey, how are you getting on?
18:49Yeah, I'm not far.
18:51Fantastic.
18:52Speak to you in a sec.
18:53All right, cheers, bye.
18:56She's not far at all.
18:58Great.
18:59The ground team, however, are making slow progress.
19:0438 minutes.
19:06No clues as to whether he's at the house?
19:08Nothing yet.
19:10All right, so I'll hang up the meeting.
19:12Yeah.
19:13Oh, she said to make him more comfortable.
19:15He can leave the meeting, do the banking stuff, come back in.
19:19You can stop sharing the screen any time you want.
19:23Oh, that's a really good tactic.
19:25The scammer just needs Jeff to proceed with the money transfer on or off their online meeting.
19:33Our only hope of stopping this is Laura.
19:37Yes, you can hang up.
19:42So he's left.
19:43He's left the meeting.
19:44He's left it, but he's still in the call.
19:46I think that means he's doing the transfer of money to Revolut.
19:48Uh-huh.
19:49Oh, dear.
19:49Which is stage one in the money going to them.
19:51But he puts the money into Revolut and then it has to go out of Revolut.
19:54And then it needs to go out of Revolut.
19:55So even if he does put it in there, we have still got a few precious moments.
20:00We've got time.
20:00We do.
20:00Yeah.
20:02OK.
20:03We just...
20:04Oh, how's our GIs doing?
20:06We just need somebody to get there now, don't we?
20:09So if the target is about to transfer the money, there's no way that we'd make it there in time.
20:13We're still half an hour away.
20:15Oh, come on, Laura.
20:16It's actually painful.
20:17OK, he's just read an email from there, which probably means that he's done with what he was doing on
20:20his phone.
20:22We don't know yet if Jeff has made the first transfer, but we need to intercept before it's too late.
20:31Traffic's backing up here.
20:32I hope Laura can get round in time.
20:35We're still about 20-odd minutes away.
20:3724 minutes away.
20:39Oh, this is tense.
20:41We've still not heard back from Laura.
20:44Mmm.
20:46Mmm.
20:47He said all done.
20:48He just emailed her.
20:50Oh, dear.
20:50Oh, no.
20:53Jeff has now transferred the £368 into the Revolut account.
20:59She's put the meeting link.
21:00She's, like, straight in there.
21:02The scammer now just needs to instruct Jeff to transfer that money into his alleged blockchain account,
21:09which is actually a scammer account.
21:11And once he does, he'll never see his cash again.
21:16So, this is minutes now we're looking at.
21:18Laura's our only hope now.
21:20There's just no way we're going to make it in time.
21:23Ugh.
21:23Oh, my gosh.
21:28Hiya.
21:29Hi.
21:29Sorry, Laura.
21:29How are you getting on?
21:31Yeah, it's all right.
21:31I can't go down this road, so I'm just running down it at the minute.
21:35So, give me two seconds.
21:37No problem.
21:38And I should be there.
21:38No problem.
21:39Just to update you.
21:40The moment...
21:40Give me two seconds.
21:41I'm going to call you right back.
21:43Call me back.
21:44Okay.
21:44Bye.
21:46She's literally running down the road.
21:48He's not back in the meeting yet, anyway.
21:50Great.
21:50Good.
21:51Okay.
21:51Pressure seconds.
21:53Oh, there's something in it.
21:54Oh!
21:55Connection interrupted.
21:56It'll be an internet thing at their end.
21:58Okay.
21:58Again, good for us.
22:00How close is she?
22:01Heyya, Laura.
22:02Are you there?
22:03Hi, I've just arrived.
22:04Just pay.
22:05It's...
22:05Amazing.
22:07Well done.
22:08I'm just going to keep pressing the door.
22:13Hello.
22:14Hello.
22:15Hello.
22:15Hello.
22:17Yes.
22:17My name's Laura.
22:19I'm from BBC.
22:20Scam Interceptor.
22:22Could you talk to my colleague here?
22:23My name's Rav Wilding from the Scam Interceptor programme.
22:26Please shut your laptop and get off the phone.
22:28You're talking to a scammer trying to steal your money.
22:30Well, that's what I've been trying to say.
22:32Please shut your laptop and get off that meeting and I can explain more.
22:39He's just letting me in now.
22:40Laura, you absolute star.
22:42You've done it.
22:43Sorry about it.
22:44You just shut it all down.
22:45End the calls.
22:46Just turn the computer off completely.
22:48That's exactly it.
22:50Are you not scammers this way?
22:51No.
22:52No.
22:53We're the good guys.
22:55Laura, you've just saved this man a lot of money.
22:58Thank you so much.
22:59Don't worry.
23:00After almost two hours, Jev is finally off his call with the scammer.
23:06I don't know how much you're aware, but everything you were putting on your phone or your computer, she was
23:11seeing everything.
23:12He said to me, cancel the meeting and then do the transaction of £368 and then come back to me.
23:19Yeah.
23:20It was trying to make you feel more secure because this group used the same amount every time.
23:27They tell people that you've got 4.7 Bitcoin in your name, usually around £370,000.
23:33I'm afraid to say it is all false.
23:36I'm so glad we were able to help you.
23:39You take care.
23:40Bye-bye.
23:43That was amazing.
23:44Great result.
23:46Literally seconds to go.
23:47Spot on.
23:48OK.
23:49This is the house.
23:5120 minutes later.
23:55Hi.
23:55Hi.
23:56Is it Laura?
23:57Oh, thank you so much for getting here so quickly.
24:00We were the other side of London.
24:02It's just something.
24:04Completely.
24:05Yeah, we've done that.
24:06Take it off.
24:08Jev's bank has advised him to contact Revolut to return his £368 and close the possibly
24:15compromised new account.
24:16His money is safe.
24:19I believe that Laura's got here just in the nick of time.
24:24What was happening?
24:26We've been getting these phone calls very regularly and I suspected they were scammers anyway.
24:31OK.
24:32And this was from an investment that I did back in 2018, 19.
24:36Right.
24:36Thinking that I was buying Bitcoin.
24:39Got you.
24:40Silly idiot.
24:41I got sucked in.
24:42So, 5,000 goes and then another five.
24:47In the end it was 25,000, $30,000.
24:51Oh, I'm so sorry.
24:52Jev's £25,000 loss to a previous scam shows how these criminals ruthlessly target previous
25:00victims.
25:02To avoid that re-victimisation, it's a really good idea just to change, I know it's a bit tough,
25:08but change your email, change your mobile because you gave them your ID.
25:12Yeah.
25:13I think the concern is that they've got quite a lot of your personal information at the
25:17moment.
25:17OK.
25:18And how are you feeling now?
25:20I'm feeling I've got a lot to do.
25:23You're probably really shocked with me turning up at the door.
25:26I laughed.
25:27I thought, I'm quite impressed really.
25:29Yeah, thank you so much for getting here when we were still so far away.
25:34Now Jev knows how to protect his personal data, Mia turns her attention to his devices.
25:41If we uninstall that.
25:44OK.
25:47Mia removes any software.
25:50What else have we got?
25:51The scammers made him download onto his computer and mobile phone.
25:56So, if we disable it.
25:58Yeah.
25:59Jev's devices are now safe.
26:03PHONE RINGS
26:05Hello?
26:07Hi sir, it's Rachel again.
26:09Rachel, listen.
26:11I know you're scamming me.
26:13How am I doing that?
26:15I know you're scamming me and you should be ashamed of yourself.
26:18If you didn't really want to follow the process, you didn't have to, sir.
26:22You need to go and find better ways of earning a living than scamming people.
26:28It's disgusting what you're doing to people.
26:31I'll explain to you about the process.
26:33Hang on.
26:36Well, you gave them what for?
26:38Hopefully they won't...
26:39Oh.
26:39Is that her again?
26:40Yeah, they'll come back again.
26:42Just block it.
26:44The scammers attempted to get hold of Jev seven more times whilst we were there.
26:49It's relentless because you've had to turn your phone off now.
26:52Over three hours since his scam call began, the fraudsters can no longer get hold of him.
26:59Okay.
27:00Well, thank you very much.
27:01Lovely to meet you.
27:02Nice meeting you as well.
27:03Okay.
27:03You end up with good work.
27:04Bye.
27:05Will do.
27:05Thank you very much.
27:19We have informed the legitimate blockchain platform about the scammers misusing their name.
27:26We have also reported these Albanian criminals to the relevant authorities and will be keeping across any action they take.
27:38If you think you've been scammed, then there are some steps you need to take straight away.
27:44Firstly, and most importantly, call your bank.
27:47The number is usually on the back of your bank card.
27:50Then, remove any software that scammers asked you to install on your phone or laptop.
27:55Change your passwords on as many online accounts as you can and then keep a close eye on them over
28:00the coming days to see if there's any unusual activity.
28:03Contact Report Fraud.
28:05Go to reportfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.
28:11If you're in Scotland, report the crime to the police on 101.
28:16And if you've had a scam text, report that to 7726.
28:20That's spam as it's written on your phone's keypad.
28:23The more that you report, the more that can be done to stop them.
28:35I'll see you next time.
28:37Bye bye.
28:55Phase 3.
28:57That wascznie Hassan to us.
28:58youredy uncirp influencing her and having really cool.
29:00On the other day, own special webbeds are all running and threatening and threatening.etcourt
