00:00Right now, I guess, it's time for Baseball Nuggets!
00:05Or at least we aren't the Giants.
00:08Now, it is true, the Rangers' offense is terrible.
00:13The only two teams who have scored fewer runs than them are both terrible.
00:18So let's start with the Giants!
00:20Man, the Giants know the most exciting ways at times to lose games.
00:25They went 0-6 on their road trip.
00:30Three of those times, they were walked off.
00:33The other three times, they were outscored a total of 15-1.
00:37Oh!
00:39Which did you prefer?
00:41Knowing in the fourth inning or whatever the game's over,
00:44or thinking you got a shot until the very end,
00:46only to get that rug pulled out right from under you?
00:51Uh...
00:53Man, there is something that takes about two days to get over a brutal loss like that,
00:59a late-game loss where you think you have it?
01:03That's one of those where you just kind of have to be like,
01:05what?
01:06And really break down what happened.
01:08So that one, I don't prefer, Kevin.
01:10Okay.
01:10Let's go ahead and blow it out.
01:12Okay.
01:13Let's go from that to...
01:16Hmm.
01:17He's trying.
01:18Some sad news for the Yankees.
01:21Both on and off the field, Ben Rice, who's had a phenomenal start,
01:26especially power-wise, to the season,
01:28exited their game yesterday against the Orioles.
01:31And then John Sterling, the longtime radio voice of the Yankees,
01:36he passed away at the age of 87.
01:39He was part of the team's broadcast for 36 years,
01:44called more than 5,400 regular season games,
01:48more than 200 postseason games.
01:51And at one point, he had broadcasted more than 5,000 consecutive games
01:57after starting with the Yankees as a pregame host.
02:00This is the exact trajectory, I imagine,
02:03that Jared Sandler will have someday.
02:05So that is sad for them.
02:07Now, let's go to...
02:09Well, the ABS can be confusing.
02:12I take you to the Red Sox, who, well,
02:15they've obviously had their own tough season.
02:17But, Willier Abreu, he was up at the plate.
02:22He had two strikes on him.
02:24It was a 2-2 call.
02:26Fastball.
02:28Ball three.
02:31Abreu tapped his helmet for the challenge.
02:35To which, the umpire looked confused
02:38and then had to remind him that he had just called it a ball.
02:42Mm-hmm.
02:42He was like, oh, I want that to be a strike.
02:45I don't think that's...
02:47I want the count to be appropriate so I can swing away.
02:49First of all, I think that's a terrible strategy.
02:52But, to be fair, once you tap your helmet,
02:55don't you need to go to the ABS?
02:57They did not.
02:58And they all had a good chuckle about it.
03:01Or they didn't go to it?
03:02I think if you tap it, you have to.
03:05Yeah.
03:06But they didn't.
03:06And I think that's a good learning moment for everybody
03:09to be paying attention to what's going on at the plate.
03:12Dead serious.
03:13I think they should have done it.
03:15Just because it was in your favor
03:17doesn't mean you can't challenge it.
03:18That would be an interesting learning opportunity.
03:20They did not challenge it,
03:22and then on the next pitch he walked.
03:24Even though I guess the ABS could have switched that into a strikeout.
03:28But they had a good chuckle and all was fine.
03:31Now, let's go to the Braves.
03:33They have been incredible to start this season.
03:36They brought back Spencer Strider,
03:39but at the same time they've had to put Ronald Acuna Jr.
03:43on the injured list with a strained left hamstring.
03:47Now, luckily that does not sound as bad
03:49as the horrifying things that you just told us about Rope,
03:52but still bad for the Braves nonetheless.
03:55You know, Kevin,
03:57they won the NL East in 20 and 22, right?
04:0021-22?
04:01And a World Series.
04:03And never had as large of a lead in their division as they do now.
04:07Eight and a half.
04:07Is that right?
04:08Yeah.
04:08What's amazing to me about that is not only that massive lead,
04:13which, by the way,
04:13you know what the biggest lead is in the American League?
04:15Two games.
04:16Actually, that's the biggest lead in any other division in baseball.
04:19Two games.
04:20Except for the NL East,
04:22where the Braves are ahead by eight and a half,
04:23but also they're up on the Mets by 12 and a half.
04:27The Mets have played 34 games,
04:29and they're already 12 and a half games behind.
04:33When do Mets fans,
04:34do they just go,
04:35you know what,
04:36we're not paying attention anymore,
04:37or do they say,
04:38no, we're going to suffer through this?
04:39See, it's the second one for sure,
04:41because I think that is the lament of the Mets fan, right?
04:44Is, well, we'll be here.
04:46It's going to suck,
04:47but we'll be here.
04:49All right, let's talk about the NL West.
04:51Shockingly enough,
04:53now, they did get back on the board yesterday,
04:56both the Padres and the Dodgers won,
04:58and they've both still had really strong starts to the season.
05:02But, after Saturday night,
05:04for the first time in Major League Baseball history,
05:10every team in a division
05:12had at least three consecutive losses.
05:15After Saturday night's game,
05:17the Rockies had lost three in a row,
05:19shocker,
05:20the Diamondbacks three in a row,
05:21Padres four in a row,
05:22Dodgers four in a row,
05:23Giants five in a row,
05:25so they had a combined losing streak of 19 games
05:30in that division.
05:32And that was the first time it had ever happened
05:34in a baseball history.
05:35Like I said,
05:36the Dodgers and the Padres did rebound,
05:38but the Padres might be the weirdest team in all of baseball,
05:41as they are 20-13 with a run differential of negative one.
05:45Okay, that's weird to be a negative one team.
05:50Do you know who else has a negative one run differential?
05:52Rangers.
05:52The Texas Rangers.
05:54And the Marlins.
05:54And they are...
05:56Yeah, that's true.
05:57We're the same.
05:58But at least with that,
05:59they're both 16-18.
06:01The Rangers are minus one.
06:03The Padres are minus one,
06:04yet the Rangers are 16-18,
06:06and the Padres are 20-13.
06:09How are the Cardinals 20-14 with a zero?
06:12Yeah, because they're better.
06:14It is confusing.
06:15You've tied every game.
06:17Not that.
06:17Now, let's go to more history.
06:21Nick Kurtz.
06:22He, well, unfortunately,
06:24he did not draw a walk on Saturday,
06:27but he did have two hits,
06:28but we were tracking his walk streak.
06:30He has not gotten a walk the last two days.
06:33His streak ends at 20 straight games
06:36with a walk tied with Barry Bonds
06:38for the second longest streak in MLB history.
06:41And then remember the weird thing that we learned
06:43that I believe the National League
06:44started tracking walks three years.
06:47Before the American League did for some reason.
06:50Then let's go to the Pirates.
06:54The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated
06:59their opponents 17-7 on Saturday.
07:04Everybody in the Pirates' starting lineup
07:06recorded at least one RBI.
07:08That was the first time since 1975
07:12the Pirates had done that.
07:14And they all had at least one RBI
07:16by the end of the fourth inning.
07:18Oh, nice.
07:19That's, see, that's what I want the Rangers
07:21to do more of.
07:22I,
07:22why can't the Rangers do more of that?
07:24Yes.
07:25Let's all have an RBI.
07:26Have an RBI.
07:26In the next four innings.
07:28Oh, everybody on that.
07:28In the next four innings, Kevin.
07:30Hey, last two games,
07:31they've scored two runs.
07:34So, you know,
07:35having an RBI is probably a thing
07:36that we could ask for.
07:37By the way.
07:38Oh, man.
07:38Do you know what happened
07:40the last time they were able
07:42to achieve that?
07:43They won their division.
07:44Now it is true.
07:46They are tied for last place
07:47in their division right now.
07:49However,
07:49they are 19-16.
07:52Good for them.
07:53Which would be first place
07:54in our division.
07:55Well, look, man.
07:56But they're tied for last
07:57in their division
07:58because, of course,
07:58everybody in the NL Central
08:00continues to be above 500.
08:02You know what?
08:02All that tells me, Kevin,
08:04is that in our division
08:04it just means more.
08:07because everybody's
08:07more competitive.
08:08Okay.
08:09In their division,
08:09nobody's competing.
08:10They're getting these easy wins.
08:12Huh.
08:13They're easy wins.
08:14Okay.
08:14These are tough wins
08:15that we're having to get here, Kevin.
08:16So you would not point out
08:17that the American League
08:18has the same number of teams
08:19above 500 as the NL Central,
08:21and that means it means more
08:23for the NL Central.
08:24You choose the opposite.
08:25No, they're easy wins
08:26that they're getting,
08:27not tough stuff.
08:28Okay.
08:28All right?
08:28So they don't have to play.
08:29Look at their runs against each other.
08:31Let's total up their,
08:32dang, actually,
08:33that's a tough division, dude.
08:34Yeah, their last place team,
08:35is a plus 31.
08:37The team they're tied with
08:39is a plus 45.
08:40How is that possible?
08:42They're all playing
08:43the worst divisions.
08:44I can only,
08:45they must be beating up
08:46on somebody out there.
08:47We gotta go find out
08:48what that is.
08:49Who is it that the NL Central
08:50is just owning right now?
08:52And by the way,
08:53keep an eye out on this.
08:54Obviously, we've discussed
08:54quite a bit.
08:55Cal Raleigh's had some
08:56ups and downs,
08:57especially downs,
08:58to start the season.
08:59He is currently waiting,
09:01awaiting an MRI result
09:02for discomfort
09:03in his right side.
09:06And Joe Ryan
09:07left the Twins start yesterday
09:09after only two batters
09:10with a sore elbow.
09:11We'll look for an update on that,
09:12but obviously,
09:13that is very concerning to hear.
