00:30It's a late night. We hope you're doing well.
00:32And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news.
00:34The Trump administration yesterday released new dietary guidelines.
00:38Oh, yeah, put him in charge of it.
00:43We're about to get real loose on the definition of eggs.
00:49That's right. The Trump administration released
00:51new dietary guidelines that flips the food pyramid.
00:54Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth unveiled a drink pyramid.
00:58President Trump called on the U.S. yesterday
01:01to boost military spending in 2027 by more than 50%
01:04to $1.5 trillion.
01:06So it sounds like he's planning to go in
01:09and take that Nobel Peace Prize by force.
01:13President Trump was set to take a photo with U.S. attorneys
01:16today at the White House.
01:17But, as usual, Giuliani misunderstood.
01:22Well, no, it's definitely white.
01:2786-year-old Democratic Congressman Steny Hoyer announced today
01:31that he will not seek re-election.
01:32That's probably for the best.
01:34A good rule of thumb is, if no one else on Earth
01:37has your first name, you're too old for the job.
01:43You know what? Nobody's ever said, witch-steny.
01:50During an Oval Office interview last night
01:52with the New York Times, President Trump said
01:54that he expects the U.S. will be running Venezuela for years,
01:56or at least until it's on E.
02:01Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s
02:04cell phone went off yesterday during the White House press briefing,
02:08and his ringtone was a duck quacking.
02:11Maybe not the best ringtone for a guy
02:13pushing phony medical advice.
02:16Quack, quack. Oh, that's me.
02:18Yeah, we know.
02:21We know who the quack, quack is.
02:25In a new episode of his podcast,
02:27Kansas City Chief star Travis Kelsey said
02:30that he won't make a decision about retirement for a month
02:32and added that he's, quote,
02:33just being a regular human for a couple of weeks.
02:35You know, a regular human who's engaged to Taylor Swift
02:39and contemplating retirement at 36.
02:43Just regular dude stuff.
02:46Former NFL player Matt Khalil has filed a lawsuit
02:49against his ex-wife that claims her public comments
02:52about his penis were an invasion of privacy
02:55and subjected him to unwanted attention.
02:57This will help.
03:03There's no punchline, by the way.
03:05I'm just waiting for everyone at home
03:07to finish Googling Matt Khalil penis.
03:14And if you're wondering which way it trends,
03:16he brought it up.
03:20Finally, the fast food chain Taco Bell today unveiled
03:22the Volcano Quesarito, which is made with beef burrito
03:25wrapped in a quesadilla filled with cheese, nacho sauce,
03:28and its new volcano sauce.
03:30And then later, you'll make your own lava.
03:36That was the monologue, everybody.
03:38Thank you so much for joining us.
03:39We've got a great show of you tonight.
03:42He's an excellent actor.
03:43You know him from The Wire, Luther.
03:45You know him from films like Beasts of No Nation
03:47and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
03:49He stars and executive produces Hijack,
03:51which premieres its second season, January 14th, on Apple TV.
03:54Our friend Idris Elba is here, everybody.
03:58And you've seen her in the films
04:00Black Bag and Back to Black.
04:02She stars in the critically acclaimed HBO series Industry,
04:06whose fourth season premieres this Sunday on HBO
04:09and streams on HBO Max.
04:11Marisa Abella will also be joining us.
04:17Before we get to that, you guys,
04:19there's a growing national outcry
04:21over the deadly ice shooting in Minneapolis
04:23and the Trump administration's attempts to lie about it.
04:25For more on this, it's time for A Closer Look.
04:31Let's not forget, everybody, Trump lied from the jump
04:34about the scope and focus of his mass deportation program
04:37during the 2024 campaign.
04:39We got to get the criminals out first.
04:41We're going to get the criminals,
04:43the murderers, the drug dealers.
04:44We have to get all of these criminals,
04:46these murderers and drug dealers and everything.
04:49We're getting them out.
04:49We are going to start with violent criminals,
04:51and we're going to start then with criminals.
04:53Yes, we're going to start with violent criminals,
04:55then regular criminals, then small-time criminals,
04:57then, of course, fashion criminals.
04:59And yet, you just know Trump's going to give Kid Rock a pardon.
05:04Since when is it legal to turn the American flag into a onesie?
05:08If you could tell Betsy Ross that Kid Rock
05:10was using her design to catch farts,
05:12she'd probably say,
05:13But he's no kid.
05:15He does look like a rock, though.
05:18Also, what does bow with the bow mean?
05:21The point is, Trump said he would crack down
05:22on violent criminals, drug dealers and gang members
05:24unless you beat up a police officer on January 6th,
05:27or your gang is a right-wing militia that stormed the Capitol,
05:30or you're a financial criminal who swindled Americans
05:33out of millions, or you're a Honduran drug kingpin
05:35who, quote, flooded America with cocaine,
05:38took a $1 million bribe from El Chapo,
05:40and bragged that he would stuff the drugs
05:42up the gringos' noses.
05:44That's real.
05:45That's a real guy that Donald Trump really pardoned.
05:47Even Scarface was like,
05:49That guy should be in jail, man.
05:56That is one little friend.
05:58And I will not be saying hello to.
06:07And that is exactly as far as I'm willing to go
06:09with my Scarface impression.
06:13If you win the presidency by claiming
06:15you're going to deport drug dealers,
06:17and then you pardon a notorious drug dealer,
06:19you better have a damn good explanation.
06:21So let's listen to the president and hear him out.
06:24You pardoned former Honduran President
06:26Juan Orlando Hernandez,
06:27and let him out of prison,
06:28even though he was convicted
06:29in a massive international drug trafficking scheme.
06:32How is that zero tolerance on drug trafficking?
06:35Well, I don't know him,
06:36and I know very little about him,
06:38other than people said it was like
06:41a Obama-Biden-type setup where he was set up.
06:44He was the president of the country.
06:46The country deals in drugs like probably
06:48you could say that about every country.
06:50I'm sorry, probably you could say that about every country.
06:54No president vacillates more between parent
06:56and teenager than Donald Trump.
06:58Like, one minute, he's all,
06:59we have to stop the scourge of drugs
07:00from coming into the country.
07:02And the next, he's like,
07:03everyone's doing it, Mom!
07:06Also, is that explanation supposed to make us feel better,
07:10saying you don't know the guy you pardoned?
07:13Were your MAGA followers supposed to use that line
07:16when they were arguing with family at Thanksgiving?
07:18He pardoned a drug kingpin, Uncle Rick.
07:21Whoa, whoa, whoa, okay, relax.
07:22It's not his fault. He didn't know the guy.
07:24He just signs whatever they give him.
07:27He thought he was pardoning Kid Rock
07:29for turning the American flag into a slanket.
07:33But don't worry.
07:34After the dangerous drug kingpin was released from prison,
07:38the president got up to speed.
07:39One of the reasons that was done
07:41is because of the fact that the party in power
07:44felt very strongly that that man was treated very badly.
07:47I studied it very quickly,
07:49and then I studied it in great detail.
07:51You studied it very quickly,
07:52and then you studied it in great detail?
07:56He's basically paraphrasing the lyrics to Kokomo.
07:59I took it fast.
08:00I took it fast, and then I took it slow.
08:05With regards to pardoning the drug kingpin.
08:09That's where I want to go.
08:11Also, feel free to flip those two
08:12the next time you pardon a criminal.
08:14I mean, what's the rush?
08:15We wanted to get him out quickly,
08:16because if he missed another day of work
08:18at the drug dealer factory,
08:21he was going to get his pay docked.
08:23So the sales pitch for Trump's immigration agenda
08:26was to deport violent criminals and drug dealers.
08:28But, of course, that was just a cover
08:29for a much more draconian plan
08:31run by White House lab assistant Stephen Miller.
08:42It turns out Miller has a much different focus
08:45from what Trump promised voters he would do.
08:48Stephen Miller held a meeting screaming at ICE officials
08:50to arrest more undocumented immigrants.
08:53Miller setting a new quota of 3,000 arrests per day
08:56to include more than just migrants with criminal records.
08:59The conservative Washington Examiner, a conservative paper,
09:02has this quote out of a private meeting
09:05where Stephen Miller is screaming at agents,
09:07what do you mean you're going after criminals?
09:09Why aren't you at Home Depot?
09:10Why aren't you at 7-Eleven?
09:11Home Depot and 7-Eleven?
09:13What happened to violent criminals?
09:14The only criminals at 7-Eleven are teenagers
09:17who use fake IDs to buy porno mags.
09:19And if a teenager is still buying a physical porno mag
09:23in the year 2026, they shouldn't be arrested.
09:25They should be celebrated.
09:28Kids don't read anymore.
09:30Social media has destroyed their attention spans.
09:33If they're building literacy and learning to love print media
09:36by illegally purchasing a copy of Jugs and Tugs magazine,
09:41then so be it.
09:42By the way, Jugs and Tugs is not a real magazine.
09:46But it could be if you or someone you know
09:49would like to license that name from us for a small royalty,
09:53we would be happy to work with you.
09:55Just send us an e-mail at Seth underscore Myers
09:58at Jugs and Tugs.
10:00And, yes, there's an underscore,
10:01because someone else already had Seth Meyers at Jugs and Tugs.
10:04What are the odds, right?
10:05And, sorry, I'm being told that Jugs and Tugs
10:07has already been shut down.
10:09Guess we'll just have to move it to X,
10:11the app where everything goes.
10:13The point is, Trump lied about his immigration agenda.
10:16He said he would focus on violent criminals.
10:18Instead, his administration has blanketed the country
10:21with federal agents disrupting neighborhoods,
10:23Home Depots, 7-Elevens, and even schools.
10:26Roosevelt High School students speaking out
10:28after they tell our news team ICE agents were there yesterday.
10:32A student telling our news team ICE agents arrived
10:35at Roosevelt High yesterday afternoon
10:38and blocked part of the road
10:40and chased people near the entrance.
10:42We're told some students were pepper sprayed
10:44during the incident.
10:45The student tells us someone was tackled by federal agents.
10:49Yesterday, I was at Roosevelt High School,
10:51which is in my district,
10:52and there were two people who were taken by ICE,
10:55both of them U.S. citizens.
10:56They pepper sprayed children
10:58and teachers outside of the school.
11:00They pepper sprayed students and teachers at a high school
11:03as if a teacher's job isn't hard enough.
11:05Now they have to deal with out-of-control ICE officers
11:07shooting pepper spray at them.
11:09We pay them $40,000 a year.
11:10We give them coffee, make them buy their own classroom supplies,
11:13and put them to work in 60-year-old buildings
11:15filled with asbestos so they can beg hormonal 15-year-olds
11:18to stop scrolling on TikTok.
11:20Then we demand that they teach our kids what a fractal is,
11:23even though we don't even know what a fractal is.
11:26I wouldn't know a fractal if it slapped me in the face,
11:29which is unlikely because I'm almost certain
11:31fractals don't have hands.
11:34And to me, the arrest quote
11:36as the Trump administration has put in place,
11:38ICE has had to lower its recruitment standards.
11:41New reporting is raising serious questions
11:42about the Trump administration's push
11:44to rapidly expand the ICE workforce.
11:47According to The Atlantic, more than a third of new recruits
11:49are failing basic fitness tests, push-ups, sit-ups,
11:52even a short run, with senior ICE officials using words
11:55like pathetic and disaster to describe the process.
11:57To pass, recruits must do 15 push-ups and 32 sit-ups
12:02and run 1.5 miles in 14 minutes.
12:07That shouldn't be that hard.
12:10Oh, my God. He sounds just like my trainer.
12:14You sure you want me to do five reps with these tens, Kevin?
12:18That shouldn't be that hard.
12:20As a general rule, if you have to lower your standards
12:23to recruit people for the thing you're doing,
12:25that means you shouldn't be doing it.
12:27It's why the Marines are the few and the proud
12:29and not just any schmuck with jeans and a face mask.
12:32And this behavior is lawless and out of control.
12:35And on top of that, most of the detained migrants
12:37have no criminal record.
12:38In fact, more than 170 U.S. citizens
12:40have been caught up in the ICE dragnet.
12:42So it probably won't surprise you to learn
12:43that most Americans really, really don't like what they're seeing.
12:46He's underwater across the board.
12:49Immigration, a key issue for him, underwater by six points.
12:52On immigration, I think they're running down
12:54with ICE agents in New York City,
12:56you know, pulling people off landscape trucks or the roof,
12:59or roofers probably not as popular as putting criminals in jail.
13:03Also, landscaping is hard work.
13:04I find it hard to believe that criminals would spend all night
13:06dealing drugs and doing violence only to set an alarm
13:09so they can wake up early to get started on Gary's hedges.
13:15So the Trump administration lied about their deportation plan,
13:18and now they're lying about the ICE shooting in Minneapolis.
13:21The Trump team knows that what we can all see
13:24with our own eyes is indefensible,
13:25which is why they have to lie about it.
13:27It was an act of domestic terrorism.
13:29What happened was our ICE officers
13:32were out in an enforcement action.
13:34They got stuck in the snow because of the adverse weather
13:36that is in Minneapolis.
13:38They were attempting to push out their vehicle,
13:39and a woman attacked them and those surrounding them
13:42and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.
13:45Two things. First of all, that's a blatant lie
13:47contradicted by the video evidence
13:49we can all see clearly with our own eyes,
13:51probably because we're not wearing oversized cowboy hats.
13:56Why is Kristi Noem always in some sort of cosplay outfit?
13:58Seriously, look at all these different fits she's tried on
14:01for her stupid photo op.
14:03She loves camouflage so much, she even uses it on her lectern.
14:07Why are you disguising the lectern?
14:10Whoa, Kristi Noem can make a microphone float.
14:15You guys, these days suck.
14:17Trying to find a way to talk about the world we live in
14:20with levity sucks so much, but I do think it's important
14:24to finish with this.
14:25A 37-year-old mother in a Honda Pilot
14:27was shot dead on a residential street,
14:29and they're calling her a terrorist.
14:31The same people who called those who stormed
14:33the federal building heroes, the same people who supported
14:36pardoning those who beat Capitol Police officers
14:38while ignoring their orders to stop,
14:40are telling us that a woman shot dead in her own car,
14:43in her own community, is a domestic terrorist.
14:46And when they do that, they're also telling us who they are.
14:49And it is our job to never forget what they've told us.
14:52I'll certainly never forget because...
14:54I started it very quickly,
14:55and then I started it in great detail.
14:58This has been A Closer Look.
15:03We'll be right back with our friend Idris Elba, everybody!
15:11For more of Seth's Closer Looks,
15:13be sure to subscribe to Late Night on YouTube.
15:24Our first guest tonight is an Emmy-nominated actor
15:27you know from shows like The Wire and Luther,
15:30as well as the films Beasts of No Nation,
15:32A House of Dynamite, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
15:34He executive produced and stars in Hijack.
15:37The second season premieres January 14th on Apple TV.
15:40Please welcome back to the show
15:41our friend Idris Elba, everybody!
15:59How are you?
16:00How are you?
16:01I'm really good.
16:02You brought an iPad.
16:03Yeah, no, I'm just watching the Arsenal game.
16:07Liverpool, Arsenal.
16:08Arsenal, Liverpool. That's a big game for you.
16:09It's a big game right now.
16:10So, I wanted to see you, obviously,
16:12and see this wonderful audience.
16:14Yeah.
16:17I got to watch the game.
16:18Okay. Hey, what if I put it here
16:19so we can both watch it?
16:21Okay, okay.
16:21Alright, so it's nil-nil.
16:23That's how you would say it, right?
16:24It's nil-nil, yeah.
16:2570th minute.
16:26Are you going to talk the whole time?
16:31I'll try to ask short.
16:32I'll make my questions short.
16:34Well, so this obviously isn't your ideal way to watch it.
16:37What's Idris' ideal way to watch a big match?
16:39Like this.
16:41Alone or alone?
16:43By myself?
16:44I love alone.
16:44No family, no wife.
16:46Have you always been?
16:48Because as I get older, now I want fewer people around me
16:52when I watch the big match.
16:53Like, I'm a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
16:55They played Sunday night,
16:57and I was just in a dark room by myself.
16:59Yep.
16:59I put my phone on Do Not Disturb.
17:01I didn't want to even talk to the outside world.
17:02Wow.
17:03Yeah, and I just got sadder and sadder.
17:07And then really happy.
17:09No, you know what's sad is when you watch it on your TV,
17:12and then you've got a second screen on your phone.
17:14So, if a message comes up, you could still see the game
17:18and the thing, you know?
17:19You need two screens to watch one game?
17:22What? It's a second screen.
17:25Oh, who's calling me?
17:26Oh, hey, Mom.
17:27All right, well, this is very exciting.
17:28Hopefully, and the audience will obviously be able to tell
17:30based on our reactions if anything happens.
17:32But, you know, it's soccer, so probably not.
17:34Wow.
17:36Oh, that's...
17:39I say that as a fan.
17:40I say that as a fan.
17:42Don't you support West Ham?
17:43I do support West Ham.
17:44So, I never have to worry about missing anything.
17:49So, I want to congratulate you on an honor.
17:52It has not officially happened yet,
17:53but you got word near the end of the year
17:55that you were receiving a knighthood.
17:57Have I said that properly?
17:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:59Very exciting.
18:01I mean, yeah.
18:04Yeah, I was blown away by that.
18:06I don't know.
18:06And I also want to share that, you know,
18:08obviously, you're a tremendous actor.
18:10You're one of my favorites.
18:11You received this also for your charitable work,
18:14which makes it even more special for my money.
18:16Absolutely.
18:16I mean, yeah, I've done a lot of youth work,
18:19youth-driven work.
18:20But they send this thing in the post.
18:23Oh, that's how you found out via mail?
18:25Yeah, via mail.
18:26And they send you a letter, and would you accept?
18:27Do you open your own mail?
18:30Well, clearly not, because I was like,
18:32are you going to take this or not?
18:34It was, like, sent in the summer.
18:36And I was really surprised it was for the youth work.
18:40Because I was like, acting?
18:42No?
18:44DJing?
18:45No.
18:46It's for youth work, which is...
18:47They said you've done so much youth work,
18:50we're willing to overlook the acting.
18:56But you went, all right, so that, when does that happen?
18:59Have you been practicing?
18:59Because this is the, officially, you do in the kneeling, right?
19:02Apparently, yeah, you got to kneel down and the sword thing.
19:04I mean...
19:05That's great. And you're going to be, is it official,
19:07you're going to be Sir Idris?
19:08Sir Idris, yeah.
19:09Gotcha.
19:10Now, the next time you're on the show,
19:12will you request that as your intro?
19:14Like, are you going to be one of those people
19:15that wants me to, like, kind of start...
19:16No. No, no. But my wife, she's now Lady Sabrina.
19:20Oh, wow. Wow.
19:21She's... We haven't even done it. She's using it.
19:24She's already taking it to the streets?
19:26Yeah, we're in the bakery. She's like,
19:29Hey, Sabrina. He's like, Oh, it's ladies.
19:32Yeah, I'll have a loaf of bread.
19:35They're like, Oh, most ladies don't pick up their own bread.
19:39Another... This is another honor.
19:41And let me just say, I mean, this is so...
19:43Because I've seen some bad ones over the years.
19:46Madame Tussauds, well, you got your own wax figure.
19:48And I mean, this is maybe one of the best ones I've ever seen
19:50because... It's not bad.
19:51...I'm not sure who's who. You know what I mean?
19:55I'm the one that's moving.
19:58Yeah.
19:59Oh, okay, okay. We're not moving in there.
20:02Were you happy when you saw it?
20:03Because, I mean, I'm assuming there's some dread
20:05when you see a version of yourself made out of wax.
20:08Yeah, it's a bit freaky.
20:09I mean, when I got to the place, you know,
20:12they had my body over here,
20:14and my head over there.
20:16I'm not even joking. They were doing touch-ups.
20:18They were like, Could you stand still for a minute?
20:19I was like...
20:21And they're looking at my face over there.
20:22It was so weird.
20:23I would definitely say, not that anybody's offered.
20:26I'd be like, I don't want to come until the head's on.
20:28Like, I don't want to see the head on one side of the room
20:30and the body's on.
20:31Yeah, I think I got there a little bit early.
20:33I was a bit eager and I'm dismembered in the building.
20:37But it's really interesting.
20:37I took my phone out.
20:39Yeah.
20:40And I'd see anybody to unlock my phone,
20:42thinking, No, it won't.
20:43And it did.
20:44Really?
20:45So you're saying, just let me,
20:47for any pickpockets out there, if they got your phone,
20:52all they got to do is stop over to Madame Tussauds.
20:56And they could get, yeah,
20:57they could get the King's phone number.
21:00No, I'm joking.
21:00But they would be able to, like, unlock it
21:02and watch the Arsenal.
21:04Oh, look at that!
21:05Oh!
21:06We really almost saw something.
21:07Yeah, all right.
21:09This is also, you know, 2018.
21:12You know, recent history.
21:13The People's Sexiest Man Alive.
21:15Congratulations.
21:18And now, this year, AARP Magazine.
21:25Hottest actor over 50.
21:28Okay.
21:31So, what's AARP?
21:33I'm English.
21:33I don't know.
21:34What does that mean?
21:34It's like the noise you make when you stand.
21:36Oh.
21:38Yeah, like, ARP!
21:41I know it.
21:42I know it.
21:42It's the American Association of Retired People.
21:45So, by the way, like, I used to ha-ha laugh about it,
21:50but it is just 50.
21:51Like, that's basically when they start sending it to you.
21:53So I'm on the other side of it as well.
21:55So, you know, no shade.
21:56Which means I was also eligible.
21:59Eligible, yeah.
22:00Well, I think you're on a list here somewhere.
22:04Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:05How did you find out about this one?
22:07On the show, actually.
22:08Yeah, yeah, first time.
22:11Congratulations.
22:12It's a good photo.
22:14By the way, I do like that, like, when you're not 50,
22:17you're, like, super happy.
22:18And then you're like, oh, well.
22:21Oh, well.
22:27Well, that's because they send you a golden walking stick.
22:31Oh, that's very lovely.
22:33There you go.
22:33There you go.
22:34And then you get to look and size it up and everything.
22:35I want to ask about your tremendous show, Hijack.
22:38Stick around.
22:38We'll be right back with more Idris after this.
22:41Oh, I B
22:55You
22:57Ah
22:59Oh
23:00Ah
23:00Ah
23:02Ah
23:03Ah
23:16Welcome back, everybody.
23:17We're here with Inja Salva.
23:19That was a clip from Hijacked.
23:22Second season of a fantastic show.
23:24For anybody who hasn't watched the first one,
23:26first season, a plane gets hijacked.
23:29Yes.
23:29And as we see from the clip, now it's a train.
23:32It's, yeah, well, yeah.
23:34Yep.
23:34And I don't want to give anything else away.
23:37Yeah.
23:39Yeah, no, I mean, in success,
23:41we didn't think the first one was going to succeed,
23:43but now we're doing train.
23:44So in success of the third one,
23:47I haven't spoken to anyone about this,
23:49but I'm going to talk to you guys and tell me what you think.
23:50We're thinking, we're thinking of e-bikes.
23:54Yeah, yeah.
23:55Thanks.
23:55I do think...
23:57That's a good reaction.
23:58Just keep smaller and smaller things getting hijacked.
24:02A group of us running around on e-bikes.
24:05I got 22% left.
24:07Come on.
24:08It is really, it is old school escapism.
24:12It's such a fun show.
24:13And when you're making the first season, did you tell?
24:15I mean, I know you're an executive producer as well.
24:17Did you think you had a hit on your hands
24:18when you were filming the first one?
24:20Not exactly a hit, but, you know,
24:22we were doing something that definitely wasn't trying to,
24:24you know, do, I mean, geopolitics or anything like that.
24:29We just wanted people to escape and have fun
24:32and, you know, nail-biting stuff.
24:34Old school.
24:35Yeah.
24:36And it was working.
24:37It was really working.
24:38Yeah.
24:39I'd say that the snacks in season one were better.
24:43Interesting.
24:44Because the plane snacks are just better
24:45than the train snacks.
24:46Oh, interesting.
24:47Yeah.
24:48So they were actually props that you could eat,
24:50and so being on an airplane, oh, yeah,
24:51so the e-bikes is going to be a disaster.
24:54Yeah.
24:55Is that your packed lunch?
24:57Yeah.
24:59The show takes place in Berlin,
25:01but you shot it in London.
25:03Whereabouts in London did you shoot it?
25:05So we shot in a studio in Dagenham.
25:08Dagenham is famous for Ford's motor company.
25:12It was a big factory, you know, industrial area.
25:15And actually, when I was working at Ford's
25:17between the ages of 17 and 19,
25:19I used to go to Dagenham to work.
25:22And what were you doing back then?
25:23I was on the production line.
25:25Gotcha.
25:26I was, you know, I used to clock in around 7 p.m.
25:28and finish around 6 a.m. in the morning.
25:30Oh, my God.
25:31It was fun times.
25:32Yeah.
25:33Are you handy?
25:34Did you learn anything in those two years
25:36that makes you handy with cars now?
25:39Uh...
25:41Listen, here's the production line.
25:42All I know is that there's a certain amount of cars
25:44that were made by me at a certain point
25:46that don't have their seals done properly.
25:50Because I was falling asleep.
25:52Wait a second.
25:53So there's a whole bunch of defects.
25:54It must be nice to go back in this part of your career
25:57as opposed to working on the assembly line.
25:58It was actually special.
25:59There's one road to get to Dagenham,
26:01and that's the A13.
26:02And I was traveling to work on Hijack 2
26:05when I was on the same road I used to work at,
26:07go towards the factory.
26:08That's pretty great.
26:09That's pretty good.
26:10Yeah, it was very good.
26:10Pretty good.
26:11You, um...
26:12Do you...
26:13Your trailer on set, I've also heard,
26:15because you also, you're an accomplished musician as well,
26:19that you've sort of turned your trailer into a music studio.
26:21Is that accurate?
26:22Yeah.
26:23I've got a, you know, a little vocal booth,
26:26and I've got a computer and the speakers and that.
26:29So what I was doing on Hijack,
26:30because it was so much fun to be on the train all day
26:33that in between, in between takes,
26:36I would go and write some songs.
26:38That's really fun.
26:39That was a lot of fun, actually.
26:39Did you have enough time between?
26:41Oh, did you watch that?
26:42Oh, my days!
26:42Just right over.
26:43You're good.
26:45Is there any Liverpool fans here?
26:48Security.
26:51Why did you make a noise?
26:52I can't help you now!
26:54Seventh row.
26:58When you work those hours,
27:00like, that late at night when you're working at Ford,
27:02like, when you go home, like, would you sleep until when?
27:05Yeah.
27:06So you'd get home around, I don't know, 8 a.m.
27:09Yeah.
27:09From down to A13, back home.
27:12And then, you know, really dark curtains, try and sleep.
27:15I'd sleep till about probably 1 p.m.,
27:18and then I'd get up and go back to work again.
27:20And do you have the dream of being an actor
27:22at this point in your life?
27:24Okay.
27:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:24And so, but are you going on auditions?
27:27Like, from one to, before you have to get back to Dagenham?
27:30No, no.
27:31Yeah.
27:31At that junction, I mean,
27:32because my dad worked there, right?
27:33So he was like, actors don't make money.
27:36Yeah.
27:36What are you doing?
27:37You come to work?
27:37I'm like, oh.
27:39And actually, for two years,
27:40I really studied my craft, you know,
27:42when I was not working.
27:43And on my holidays, I used to come to New York City
27:47because I really wanted to go to Lee Strasberg's
27:50School of Action in Union Square.
27:53Yep.
27:53And so when I saved up enough money,
27:55I came out to New York.
27:56And was that the tipping point?
27:57Like, basically, you came out?
27:58And how did your dad react when it was official
28:02that actors do make money and you were...
28:04Like, was he very happy when it turned out
28:07that you had been right?
28:08He was like, listen, if it don't work out,
28:10I can bring you back.
28:12Yeah.
28:13But you have to start at the bottom.
28:14I'm not coming back.
28:15Don't you worry about that.
28:16Well, I'm glad you were right.
28:17But he's really happy for me.
28:19That's wonderful.
28:19Hey, thank you so much for being here.
28:21It is always such a pleasure to see you guys.
28:22Andrew Selva, the second season of Hijack,
28:25premieres January 14th on Apple TV.
28:27We'll be right back with Marisa Abella.
28:44Our next guest, a talented actress you know from films
28:46such as Black Bag and Back to Black
28:48and the critically acclaimed HBO series Industry,
28:51which returns for its fourth season this Sunday at 9 on HBO
28:54and streams on HBO Max.
28:55Let's take a look.
28:56You can't talk like that, Nina.
28:58I can.
28:59And I will.
29:01Now, you need to focus on the societal benefit angle of the app,
29:05financial well-being,
29:06but I also think that we should really use this time with Bevan
29:09to highlight the mock renaissance.
29:12You know, just as much as you feel comfortable with.
29:15Men shouldn't feel the stigma
29:16when talking about their mental health,
29:18that kind of thing.
29:18Once you see through me, I don't know.
29:22Weaponizing my trauma.
29:23But, Henry, narrative is important.
29:26People are going to narrativize this for you,
29:28so you might as well control it.
29:30Please welcome to the show Marisa Abella, everyone.
29:40Marisa Abella, everyone.
29:48Hello, how are you?
29:50I'm so good.
29:51I'm so excited to be here.
29:52I'm so excited to have you.
29:54Industry is a show.
29:55It's a big hit in the late-night offices.
29:58A lot of people are huge fans,
29:59and it's one of these really exceptional stories these days,
30:02which is, it wasn't a giant show in the beginning,
30:05but you had a network that believed in it,
30:08and I feel like it just, the fan base has grown every year.
30:10Do you sense that?
30:11Yeah, I mean, it wasn't giant,
30:13I think is actually, like, a very kind way of saying it.
30:17No one watched the show.
30:19No, I'm joking.
30:20I mean, people, it was, you know,
30:22it was a kind of cult hit, that's what we say.
30:25It was like a little gem,
30:27and the people that did watch it
30:29really enjoyed it still in season one,
30:31but definitely, I mean, you know,
30:33when I was working with people,
30:35they used to say, like,
30:36well, have you done other things?
30:38Oh, yeah, I do this show called Industry.
30:40That's nice.
30:43Anyway, and, like, that has changed now.
30:46People watch the show, which is great.
30:48It's really nice, and again,
30:49I think, like, when you have a network
30:51that believes in something, you know, being patient,
30:53it's lovely to see it pay off.
30:55Does it feel like the stakes are higher
30:57when, like, a season like this is coming out now
30:59where a huge multiplier of fans
31:01are looking forward to it?
31:02It does feel like the stakes are higher.
31:04I think, mostly for me,
31:06not because, I don't know,
31:07I feel like we have,
31:08we always go into every season.
31:09We love the show.
31:10I love playing Yasmin.
31:13I love the scripts.
31:14It's amazing.
31:15So I always want to do my best,
31:16like, for, you know, just for that reason.
31:19But I think I feel this kind of fear a little bit now
31:23that people used to feel like they found the show
31:26and it was theirs.
31:27And, like, they loved it because no one knew about it.
31:30And now, you know, people have started to say,
31:33this show is really great.
31:34I don't want people to be like,
31:36well, you can't tell me what to think.
31:38Like, you know what I mean?
31:40People like to find a gem.
31:42But I think it just brings,
31:45the great thing about Mickey and Conrad,
31:47the writers of the show,
31:48is that they just, like,
31:49hit you over the head
31:50with something completely different
31:52every single season.
31:53So, like, it's, you know.
31:54By the way, I knew you were putting your all into it
31:56in season one and two.
31:57I wasn't, like, when I was like,
31:59it would have been funny if you were like,
32:00no, we're all trying now.
32:02Yeah.
32:03Like, for the first time,
32:04we're like, let's really try this time.
32:06Yeah.
32:06Oh, maybe we should try hard now.
32:09You also, I feel like,
32:10the cast gets bigger.
32:12Kiernan Shipka, our friend.
32:14Kit Harington joined the show in season three.
32:16We're huge Kit fans here.
32:18And he is, plays your husband on the show.
32:21Did you, when you heard word that Kit was coming,
32:23was that, like, a pretty good bellwether
32:24of the direction things were headed?
32:26For sure.
32:26I mean, we were kind of, you know,
32:29season one, season two.
32:31We got greenlit for season three.
32:33We were like, oh, gosh, that's great.
32:35So excited.
32:36And they said, and Kit Harington's joining.
32:38And I was like, they're taking us seriously.
32:41They're taking us seriously.
32:43And that was like, okay, like, time to, time to bet.
32:46Yeah, when HBO breaks out a Game of Thrones person for you,
32:49it's official.
32:51He's HBO royalty.
32:52He is, he's not right.
32:53He's not just like, yeah, Stark royalty.
32:56And I grew up in the UK, like, when it was,
32:58when that, when Game of Thrones was on,
33:00it was like, dress up, come over,
33:02time to watch Game of Thrones.
33:04Oh, that's fantastic.
33:05And now, and then the first day,
33:06and obviously he's, you know, my husband.
33:08So.
33:14Now, I also want to,
33:16I want to congratulate you
33:17because you have a real life husband recently.
33:21And, and he was the one who asked me to remind you
33:24if you got, if you got too excited about the kit thing.
33:27But let me just say this photo we're lucky enough to have.
33:31It looks like a very fun wedding.
33:33Was it a very fun wedding?
33:34It was very fun.
33:35Our first dance was to I am what I am.
33:38Okay.
33:39And we, I, my husband is amazing
33:43and he's a singer.
33:44And he sang I am what I am
33:46at a cabaret for a pride event.
33:49And at that moment, I was like,
33:51this is the man I am supposed to spend
33:54the rest of my life with.
33:55He's just a wonderful person.
33:57And, and, yeah.
33:57Was it a synchronized dance or just a performance?
33:59No, it was a, it was a choreographed routine.
34:01But, but we did it ourselves.
34:03Oh, you choreographed it yourself.
34:04And do you feel like,
34:05how was your execution on the night
34:07vis-a-vis how hard you rehearsed?
34:09His was better than mine.
34:11Oh, that's nice of you to say.
34:11I got overexcited.
34:13Yeah.
34:13And was like looking at my friends
34:14being like,
34:17we're dancing.
34:18And he was like,
34:19stick to the spot.
34:21This is lovely too.
34:22There's kind of like an industry table.
34:24It's very nice to get married
34:26while you're part of a great cast.
34:27There's Kiernan there.
34:29There's Kit there.
34:29Yeah.
34:29And is it true that Kit had a lot of,
34:31did he have wedding advice going into it?
34:33Yes, he had lots.
34:34So I, I, I was,
34:36I was planning my wedding
34:37throughout the shoot of season four.
34:39And obviously we have a lot to do together,
34:42Kit and I.
34:42So when you kind of got that downtime
34:44and we're sitting there on our phones,
34:45I'm like, oh,
34:46do you like these flowers?
34:48And he was amazing at helping out.
34:50But the one piece of advice that he gave
34:52that like really kind of stuck with me was,
34:55and he was really hell bent on this actually.
34:58He was like that first sip of champagne
35:02when you've said, I do.
35:03And you're like, yes.
35:05And everyone's screaming and clapping for you.
35:07And you walk outside and they hand you a glass of champagne.
35:10Make sure it is the best champagne.
35:13Like really go for it.
35:15And I was like, oh, okay.
35:17And then I felt this pressure.
35:18He's going to be there.
35:20What if he sees some like,
35:21God forbid, Prosecco.
35:24So we did.
35:25And it was great advice.
35:27It really gets the mood going.
35:29Everyone feels really good.
35:30My advice would have been like,
35:31and then all your guests serve them whatever.
35:35Serve them the cheapest stuff you can get your hands on.
35:38Right, right.
35:40Another thing I'd say about the show,
35:42it's not G-rated, right?
35:44I don't know if you have the rating system in the UK.
35:46But, you know, this is not a kid's show.
35:47And in fact, I walked in the other day,
35:51your producer of the segment, Sarah,
35:53was watching new episodes.
35:55And I didn't realize what she was watching.
35:57And I thought there was going to be an HR issue.
36:00Like what she was watching on her desk.
36:01I'm like, that's not okay at work.
36:03Stop it.
36:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:05Have you ever recommended it to somebody
36:06and sort of forgot maybe like what they're about to lay eyes on?
36:10Yeah, definitely.
36:11I mean, especially in season one,
36:12I was just so excited that I was on TV.
36:14Sure.
36:15That I was like telling everyone like,
36:16watch this show, watch this show.
36:17And then I'd sort of see people being like,
36:19ah, I watched it.
36:22And especially sort of depending on who they watched it with.
36:24But now I'm a bit more,
36:26I'm doing a film at the moment.
36:28And I am training.
36:29And my PT was like,
36:31I was flying to New York to do,
36:33to come and do all of this stuff.
36:34And he was like,
36:35oh, I'll give it a watch.
36:37And I was like, maybe don't.
36:39Or if you do like start with season three,
36:42because I, you know.
36:43But Noah, he,
36:46but it's funny.
36:47For me,
36:48it's mostly old teachers that I find very difficult.
36:51Of course.
36:51Yeah.
36:52I had like,
36:52my old history teacher actually messaged me on Facebook.
36:56And like,
36:57and was like,
36:58I saw industry.
36:59Bravo.
37:00And I was like,
37:01that's so weird.
37:03That's so weird.
37:05But I'm also incredibly proud of it.
37:07Yes.
37:07You gotta let it go.
37:09Now,
37:09I should say,
37:10if I were one of your former teachers,
37:12I would be impressed with the languages.
37:15You actually speak multiple languages on the show.
37:18French,
37:18Spanish,
37:19Arabic?
37:20Arabic,
37:21German,
37:21some Italian in there.
37:23Are you,
37:23is that a skill you have or is something you had to learn for the part?
37:27It's not a skill I have.
37:29Okay.
37:29And it's not really a skill that I,
37:30I mean,
37:31I did learn for the part.
37:32Like I learned what I had to say.
37:33Yeah.
37:34You know,
37:34but obviously I can't become fluent in like seven languages for a show.
37:38So I,
37:39I'm,
37:40I did Spanish for a level.
37:42So Yasmin speaks mostly Spanish when she speaks another language,
37:47especially in the first couple of seasons.
37:48I speak a lot of German this season,
37:50but Yasmin is like not particularly great at her job.
37:54So all of the other characters,
37:59so all of the other characters have a lot of finance to do.
38:04And I don't really.
38:05Oh,
38:06so they have to do the language of like,
38:08yeah,
38:08financial language,
38:09which is that jargon might be even harder than Arabic.
38:11Totally.
38:12Yeah.
38:12Yeah,
38:13for sure.
38:13So you lucked out.
38:14I really was like,
38:15woohoo.
38:17I also want to compliment you.
38:19You were in one of my favorite movies this year called Black Bag,
38:21a Steven Soderbergh movie.
38:22And it's just fantastic.
38:25I love a spy film.
38:27And this is,
38:28I mean,
38:28again,
38:28I love it so much.
38:29And a lot of this film,
38:31and one of the things that makes it so thrilling is just a bunch of people
38:33in the intelligence industry sitting around a dinner table.
38:36It's like a dinner party spy movie.
38:38Yeah.
38:38Which I feel like I've never seen before.
38:40Michael Fassbender,
38:41Cate Blanchett.
38:42And I was just thinking,
38:43I was watching it,
38:44I was like,
38:44oh my God,
38:44there's so many wonderful actors here.
38:45But like,
38:46they're always at a table with Cate Blanchett.
38:48Like,
38:48did you ever forget that?
38:51No.
38:52No.
38:52I mean,
38:52she,
38:53we,
38:54we had,
38:55she was sort of,
38:56slightly on the same side of the table as me as well.
38:59So I was always like,
39:00what is she thinking?
39:01I can't see her.
39:03But,
39:04but no,
39:05I mean,
39:05she's so incredible.
39:07And it's not,
39:07you know,
39:08you work with lots of incredible actors,
39:10but like,
39:10she's really,
39:11if you'd have asked me like five years ago,
39:14what actors I would like to work with,
39:16Cate would have always been the first,
39:19like,
39:20oh,
39:20Cate Blanchett,
39:21she's amazing.
39:21So it was a real,
39:23it really was a pinch me moment,
39:25and amazing,
39:26and just a,
39:28a really,
39:28a great lesson.
39:28It's a great movie as well,
39:29because,
39:30you know,
39:30they're,
39:30you know,
39:31a couple actors,
39:31obviously,
39:32who I've been huge fans of for a long time,
39:34and then the rest of you,
39:35who I was less familiar with,
39:36like,
39:37are all just so great as well.
39:38So I highly recommend that.
39:39So excited for Industry coming back.
39:41Thanks so much for being here.
39:42And congratulations
39:43on your wedding again.
