00:05From 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, it's Late Night with Seth Meyers.
00:12Tonight, Iowa Devery, star of Widow's Bay, actor Matthew Rhys, cooking with Sabrina Rudin.
00:25And now Seth Meyers.
00:28Good evening, everybody. I'm Seth Meyers. This is Late Night. We hope you're doing well.
00:31And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news. First Lady Melania Trump announced
00:36last week that she will add a beehive to the White House honey program. And oh no, he found it.
00:45President Trump yesterday welcomed Britain's King Charles as he kicked off his state visit
00:51in honor of America's 250th anniversary, as well as the 280th anniversary of their
00:57their hands.
01:07Sorry, I just know when I start the next joke, the picture changes.
01:11Sunday was First Lady Melania Trump's 56th birthday, and President Trump did not acknowledge
01:16the day on any of his personal social media accounts. Look, it was a crazy weekend.
01:20I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he was too busy if he hadn't found
01:26time to congratulate Lee Greenwood on the birth of his grandchild.
01:32That's right. President Trump congratulated God Bless the USA singer Lee Greenwood in a
01:37post over the weekend on Truth Social on the birth of his first grandchild 10 days ago.
01:40And apparently the baby is already sick of that song.
01:46The pizza chain Little Caesars is partnered with the company Flytrex to offer drone delivery.
01:52And in a related story, Iran just surrendered.
01:59They would have been fine. They would have pizza if it was just pizza.
02:08A Missouri man was recently charged with sexual misconduct after he allegedly danced naked in
02:14the vestibule of an Aldi store. Or more likely, he was just stripping to raise money for groceries.
02:22The airline Emirates is reportedly developing first-class suites with private bathrooms.
02:26So if you've ever wanted to seat the reclines all the way, movies on demand, and your own bathroom,
02:32have you ever considered just staying home?
02:36That's right. The airline Emirates is reportedly developing first-class suites with private bathrooms,
02:41while Spirit has introduced an empty Gatorade bottle.
02:48Yesterday was Marine Mammal Rescue Day, but it's like I always say, who rescued who?
03:00You know what the hardest part about being a late-night talk show host is?
03:03Just no one is going to do you dirty in the picture.
03:10The music streaming platform Spotify announced last week that its most streamed album of all time,
03:16with more than 20 billion streams, is Bad Bunny's Un Verano Sin Tea.
03:21And if you're wondering what that trend...
03:25If you're wondering what that translates to, about 38 cents.
03:35Everything got slowed down, because you all wanted to tell me how much you liked Bad Bunny.
03:43And finally, Wendy's.
03:45Okay.
03:47Okay.
03:48Okay.
03:55Because internally, they're like, you know we're the Bad Bunny of fast food places.
04:01Finally, Wendy's began offering its spring menu yesterday, including a watermelon sparkling energy,
04:06which gives a bubbly energy boost.
04:08And then, to bring it back down, the Big Bacon Classic Triple.
04:11And that was the monologue, everybody!
04:14We got a show.
04:15See you tonight.
04:17You know her from hits like The Bear and Big Mouth.
04:20Films such as After the Hunt and Bottom.
04:22She's starring on Broadway in Proof, now playing at the Booth Theater here in New York City.
04:28Iowa Deberi is back on the show, everybody!
04:31This is him.
04:33Shows like The Americans, The Beast and Me.
04:37She's currently starring in Widow's Bay.
04:39It's fantastic.
04:40Rear is April 29th on Apple TV.
04:42Matthew Rhys is back on the show.
04:45She is founder of Spring Cafe and Spring Cafe Aspen.
04:50Her new cookbook, Healthy with a Side of Happy, is out today.
04:53Here to make some serious burritos, Sabrina Rudin is also joining us.
04:59Andy Serkis joined us on family trips.
05:02A fantastic conversation.
05:04Do give that a listen.
05:05I don't have to tell you guys these days.
05:07The news stinks.
05:08Every headline I see makes me feel worse than the last.
05:11Every once in a while, there's a story that makes me feel great.
05:14I'd like to share one now in a segment called The Kind of Story We Need Right Now.
05:23Everywhere you turn, there's an article telling you that we're in the middle of a health crisis.
05:2647% of adults have high blood pressure.
05:2950% of adults are obese.
05:30The Secretary of Health and Human Services looks like a walnut with googly eyes.
05:35But what can we do about it?
05:37You can go for a run.
05:38Or you can lift weights.
05:40Or you can do what a bunch of people in England did recently.
05:42And you can go for a run while lifting a weight.
05:45And that weight is your wife you are carrying.
05:48Where can you do that?
05:49At a wife-carrying race.
05:51That's right.
05:52This is a wife-carrying race.
05:54And it was held recently in Surrey, England.
05:56And if you're worried that wife-carrying means something else in British slang, don't.
06:01Because it is exactly what you think it is.
06:03It is a real thing.
06:04And it is the kind of story we need right now.
06:07Why?
06:07Because finally, someone made running interesting.
06:09Regular runners talk about, you know, they talk about dumb s**t.
06:12Like heart rates and negative splits.
06:14Not these guys.
06:15They're thinking, if I lose my grip on my wife's ankles and drop her,
06:18I bet it's going to be a whole thing.
06:21Normal runners are fueled by, you know, those little gel packs.
06:24These guys are fueled by the knowledge that if they drop their wives,
06:27they'll never win another argument as long as they live.
06:29So that's it, you're thinking?
06:31They just pick up their wives and run around what?
06:33A track a couple of times?
06:34Of course not.
06:35A track would be way too easy.
06:36They run a cross-country obstacle course with their wives on their backs.
06:41These men run up and down hills.
06:45They jump over hay bales.
06:47They even have buckets of water thrown at them.
06:51This is the kind of story we need right now.
06:54Couples face obstacles.
06:56Yeah, give it up to these lunatics.
07:01Couples face obstacles all the time, but most of those obstacles are boring,
07:05like financial stress or infidelity.
07:07These obstacles are fun.
07:09Also, once you've made it through these obstacles together,
07:11every other obstacle will seem easy.
07:13If your wife says, we're going to be late on the mortgage payment this month,
07:16you can say, well, that's tough.
07:17But not as tough as the time I carried you upside down
07:20through a meadow while getting pelted with ice water.
07:24Now, you may be thinking, this sounds like total chaos,
07:26but it's not, because like any race,
07:27wife-carrying is governed by a strict set of rules,
07:31extremely normal rules that I'm about to tell you.
07:33And all of these are completely real.
07:35Like, rule number one, wives must weigh in.
07:39Rule number two, all wives must wear a helmet.
07:41And rule number three, you don't have to carry your own wife.
07:46Oh, oh, what's that?
07:48Did a few husbands' ears perk up?
07:53Did a few gentlemen who had tuned out due to not wanting to carry their wife
07:57suddenly re-engage with the proposition?
08:00Oh, I wouldn't mind carrying another man's wife.
08:03I mean, it's not adultery, it's cardio.
08:07But the most important rule in the wife-carrying race
08:09is that you have to carry a wife using one of the official recognized holds.
08:13These include the fireman's carry, classic, masculine,
08:17the bridal carry for your more romantic wife carrier,
08:20the dorking hold, which I assume is when you carry an invisible wife
08:23because no real woman would marry you, you dork.
08:28And, of course, the most popular hold,
08:30the one used by all the winners, is the Estonian hold.
08:34Look at the Estonian hold.
08:36Not only is that an unappealing position for two humans,
08:39it also makes you reconsider your trip to Estonia.
08:44We don't have Uber and Talon, but Hugo here can get your wife to a hotel.
08:50You will walk.
08:52You will walk.
08:56It's also an unappealing name.
08:58Estonian hold sounds like a euphemism for a very cold hug.
09:02How'd your date go?
09:03Not great.
09:04She gave me the old Estonian hold.
09:07That looks like an incredibly vulnerable and awkward way
09:10for a woman to be carried through an obstacle course.
09:12Can you imagine if they also got interviewed
09:14by reporters in that position?
09:15Oh, what's that?
09:15They did.
09:16How comfortable is that for you?
09:18Super comfortable.
09:19And what's it like, your view from down there?
09:23Interesting.
09:24So what's it like down there?
09:26Is it comfortable?
09:29Not at all.
09:30Those women are really in love.
09:32And you know that because there's no other way
09:34they'd put their noses that close to a man's butt.
09:37So after all this hard work, after the running, the jumping, the buckets of water,
09:41what do the winners of the wife-carrying race get?
09:42A ribbon?
09:43A trophy?
09:43No.
09:44They get something way more practical.
09:45A barrel of ale!
09:48This is the kind of story we need right now.
09:50What better way to celebrate your victory and also forget that you just paraded your wife
09:53or another man's wife, ass up in front of all your neighbors.
09:57Normally when people run a race, all they get is a crappy foil blanket or a shirt with
10:01a disease on it.
10:02Not these people.
10:03These people can get a prize they can actually use.
10:06And in the case of this woman, one they have truly earned.
10:11Looks like someone finished the race in 69th place.
10:15Marriage can be hard.
10:17And after years together, couples can fall into a rut.
10:21The wife-carrying race may be silly, but it's also an opportunity for couples to break
10:25out of their routine and have a unique experience together.
10:27It's inspiring.
10:28It's uplifting.
10:30It's...
10:30What's the word I'm looking for?
10:32Interesting.
10:34That's it.
10:35This has been The Kind of Story We Need Right Now.
10:40We'll be right back with Iowa Debris.
10:55Our first guest tonight is an Emmy Award-winning actress, writer, and comedian.
10:59You know from her work in shows such as The Bear and Big Mouth and films like After
11:03the Hunt and Bottom.
11:04She is currently starring on Broadway in Proof, which is playing now at the Booth Theater.
11:09Please welcome back to the show our friend Iowa Debris, everybody!
11:24Hello!
11:26How are you?
11:28I'm well.
11:28How are you?
11:29I'm wonderful.
11:30You know, last time you were here, it was October, and we were talking about you doing
11:32this show.
11:33And, you know, you're a star, obviously, of, you know, screen, both the big...
11:38And we were just worried, like, would Broadway change you?
11:41Would Broadway change me?
11:43That was the fear, yeah.
11:45I...
11:45I...
11:45Excuse me.
11:46I'm sorry.
11:46Hi, thank you.
11:47Thank you so much.
11:51It's good.
11:51It's like the first time I've done it.
11:54You don't have, like, a coaster or anything, right?
11:56No?
11:57No, because you assured us you hadn't changed, so we didn't take...
12:00So you didn't bring out the coasters.
12:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:02Okay.
12:02If you'd told us I'm different now, we would have had a coaster.
12:05Oh, my God, by the way, did you know it would match your look?
12:09I just really wanted a Shirley Temple.
12:12It's a fantastic outfit.
12:14Thank you so much.
12:15Yeah, and thank you.
12:16Yeah.
12:16For giving me the platform for this outfit.
12:18Yeah.
12:18I really appreciate that.
12:19We want a platform new and exciting outfits.
12:22You know, I appreciate that.
12:23The way that you make space for outfits.
12:25Yeah.
12:26In late night.
12:26Yeah.
12:27In the world.
12:27Yeah.
12:28A lot of people try to make space for voices.
12:30Not me.
12:30No.
12:32Outfits.
12:32There's so many, by the way.
12:34There's so many voices.
12:36I know.
12:36How many outfits.
12:37Not as many outfits.
12:37Two, three.
12:38Yeah.
12:39And then once we cycle through them, then I'll get to the voices.
12:42But only after I see all the outfits.
12:44Specifically these ones.
12:45Yeah.
12:46How is it going?
12:46It's you and Don Cheadle, which is fantastic news.
12:50Yes.
12:50Incredible actor.
12:52I mean, look, not unlike a lot of us, but you've been a fan of Don's for a long time.
12:57Yes, for a bit of time.
12:59But maybe more intensely a fan of him than, say, I am.
13:02Well, intense is such a strong choice of word.
13:06I may or may not have a Cheadle-related tattoo on my body.
13:11Okay.
13:12Maybe.
13:13And, but also a mask.
13:14His face on my back.
13:15Big.
13:17Photorealistic.
13:18With a quote?
13:20Yeah.
13:20Okay.
13:20Keep dreaming.
13:21No.
13:21It's a quote from Ocean's Eleven.
13:26Make some noise for that film.
13:29Yeah.
13:33Making people applaud for Ocean's Eleven.
13:35But it's a quote.
13:38He plays a character named Bashar Tar.
13:40Yeah.
13:41And one of my best friends, who is also a black woman, we met at NYU, and we both were
13:45like, we're obsessed with this movie, we're obsessed with Don Cheadle, wouldn't it be
13:48so funny if we got him saying Barney Rubble Trouble on our bodies forever?
13:54And did you, I assume when you get a matching tattoo, you do it on the same day?
13:57Yes.
13:58Because you want the artist to like.
13:59Stay in the zone.
14:00Yeah, exactly.
14:01Don't lose focus.
14:02Are they, do you feel like they're more hesitant or more excited when people come in and
14:06go, we want, we want matching tattoos?
14:08Like, I feel like they must.
14:09Feels 50-50.
14:10Yeah, right.
14:10Feels like it's close.
14:11Yeah.
14:12Also, I would think it's very important to get a tattoo in the middle of the day so they
14:16don't think that like you're making a bad choice based on like alcohol.
14:183 p.m.
14:19Tattoo.
14:19Yeah.
14:20Yeah.
14:20The 3 p.m.ers, they must be so happy when they walk in.
14:22Well, it's like you want it in the same window as a doctor's appointment.
14:25Right.
14:25Just to have an air of.
14:26You're right.
14:27Yeah.
14:28Like, if you're like, when did, if you're like, my doctor says it's bad, you're like,
14:30when did you go?
14:31You're like, 1 a.m.
14:33Oh, get a second opinion.
14:36You need a second opinion.
14:37It's a very famous play.
14:39Yes.
14:39And Tommy Kail's directing.
14:40He's a very accomplished director.
14:42And you also have some very impressive producers on this Broadway show.
14:46Yes.
14:47We have a photo of them.
14:48And for those who don't know Broadway producers, you might have to explain who they are.
14:51Sure.
14:52Not everybody here is like, you know, Broadway.
14:53No, no, no.
14:53It's okay.
14:54Yeah.
14:54So this is Michelle and Barack Obama.
15:02And they've done a few things.
15:04They're up and coming.
15:05Yeah.
15:05Did Michelle consent to the hug you're giving her?
15:08Because that is aggressive.
15:09Okay.
15:10That's an aggressive hug.
15:11Okay.
15:11I give a good hug.
15:13I give a good hug.
15:14Yeah.
15:15Well, I'm excited.
15:16That's really cool.
15:17She was the first lady and she's really nice.
15:19And in their role of producers, I'm assuming they're sort of, I don't want to mean passive
15:24as if they don't care, but I'm assuming they just come and tell you, you did a great
15:27day.
15:27They don't give notes.
15:28They're every day giving me notes.
15:28It's really cruel.
15:30That's, yeah.
15:31Yeah, no, but they've been so lovely and helpful.
15:34It is such a nice hug.
15:36Yeah, it's really good.
15:37I don't think I have even photos where I'm hugging.
15:39By the way, I'm glad we have one where she's hugging back a little bit more.
15:42Like, I feel like it was a little unfair just to be like this one.
15:45Yeah, yeah.
15:46Yeah.
15:46Yeah.
15:47This is like an attack and this is, I'm hugging.
15:50Again, the word choice with you tonight.
15:53We'll circle back later.
15:55Yeah, but they've been so supportive and cool.
15:58And I think for a lot of reasons, the story really connected with them.
16:02There's a lot of questions this play asked about, you know, like genius.
16:04What does genius look like?
16:05What does legacy look like?
16:06Which I think for them, especially as literally our first black president, that is like a question that is on
16:14his mind and their minds and the Chicago connection.
16:19So it's been really fun.
16:20You and Don are doing a very cool thing as well.
16:23Yes.
16:24Did you start this program or are you using this program?
16:27But it's about accessible tickets.
16:28Well, we just wanted that to be a really, this mass, this Shirley Temple is so tall.
16:33Yeah.
16:34But we both, I think, have benefited in our lives from access to the arts.
16:39And, you know, we are living in a time where I think there's a lot of other conversation, a lot
16:45of noise.
16:46People might not consider that a priority, but I know that that's changed my life.
16:50That's changed the lives of friends that I have who aren't even in the arts.
16:53My parents are not in the arts, but I know they love, you know, seeing theaters, seeing shows, seeing comedy.
16:58And so we have a few different affordable, accessible ticket initiatives.
17:03And we also partnered with the Department of Education.
17:06So right now the number is 500.
17:08But if any rich people watch this and they want to give any more money, we can get more.
17:12But 500 students and teachers will be able to see the show for free.
17:17That's great.
17:17And we also have, like, a student rush, as well as our in-person rush and our digital rush and
17:22lottery.
17:23So we've got a lot of different programs.
17:24You can check them out on our website.
17:26I also know you had parents like I have parents, which is we grew up in New England.
17:32Nigerian?
17:32Yes, I have two.
17:33In Beijing?
17:34Have I never brought that up?
17:36That makes sense.
17:36That I have Nigerian parents?
17:38My admires.
17:39I'm hearing it now.
17:39Okay.
17:40Yeah.
17:42But they wanted to bring us to New York.
17:45I mean, we were Boston people, New England people, I should say.
17:47You're more Boston than me.
17:48But come down here.
17:50But you used to take the now infamous, the dearly departed, the feng...
17:54The feng hua bus.
17:54The feng hua bus.
17:55Makes you rest in power.
17:56Yeah.
17:56Yes.
17:57So for those who never experienced, explain the unique journey that is provided by a feng hua bus.
18:04Imagine this.
18:05Open your eyes.
18:08Close them.
18:09Now open your mental eye, right?
18:12You are in a bus depot in the depths of Boston, Chinatown.
18:18You get the opportunity to take a $10 to $15 bus that will take you to New York in under
18:24four hours.
18:25Sometimes three.
18:26Yeah.
18:27It's like the Concord of buses.
18:29Yeah.
18:29This thing's going 100 miles.
18:31Big bus, too.
18:32Not a small bus.
18:32Big old bus.
18:34Yeah.
18:34100 miles an hour on the speedway.
18:36Sometimes catching fire.
18:37Don't sit in the back.
18:39Yeah.
18:39Don't sit in the front.
18:40You will hit things, and things will hit you.
18:42The bus might explode.
18:44That's not your business.
18:45Your business is getting to New York.
18:48And then you do.
18:49And it was really...
18:50You're not joking when you say it's like $10, $15.
18:53Yes.
18:53Yeah.
18:54$10, $15 to get on a bus that would take you to another state.
18:57Sometimes it would break down in Connecticut.
18:58Yeah.
18:58You end up at, like, at an IHOP or a...
19:02Yeah.
19:02You know, I've heard tale of, like, it breaks down, and then, like, an hour later, they're
19:06like, there's no bus.
19:07Yeah.
19:07Yeah, this one's not...
19:09It's never going to get fixed.
19:10And then you get a bindle and a plucky dog and another band of fellow orphans, and you
19:15start a new life in Connecticut or upstate New York.
19:18You just figure it out.
19:19Yeah.
19:19Yeah.
19:20They're like, we have good news and bad news.
19:22The bad news is the bus broke down.
19:24The good news is you live here now.
19:26This is your home.
19:27It's like a Twin Peaks style.
19:30Yeah.
19:30They're like, you were on the fun, Wabas.
19:32You needed a fresh start.
19:35And we needed a mayor.
19:40We, well, when we write this screenplay, we do it together.
19:42We do it together.
19:44Do you ever, I mean, buses can be, obviously, as you've just described.
19:49I mean, but do you take the New York bus ever?
19:52I haven't taken the New York bus in a long time.
19:54Yeah.
19:55There's ghosts on the New York public transit for me, especially the bus.
19:59The bus out here is hard.
20:01I will, I'll full snob and say, never took the bus until I had kids.
20:06And now in the last few years, like, sometimes you just pick them up at school and you're
20:09like, the bus is our best.
20:10That's cool.
20:11Yeah.
20:11And I will say, I don't know, no shade on the bus.
20:16It's very, it still gets the job done.
20:17Yeah.
20:18That's important.
20:19That's important.
20:19And then also, like, just my kids are, yeah, give it up for the bus.
20:23Okay, yeah.
20:25Heartbreaking.
20:26Heartbreaking that the New York bus got more applause than Ocean's.
20:29Ocean's 11.
20:30It really makes you think.
20:31Yeah, it really makes you think.
20:32What time are we living in?
20:34That's Mom Donnie's New York is now the New York City bus.
20:37That is absolutely Mom Donnie's New York.
20:38The bus.
20:38The bus.
20:39The bus.
20:44Mentioned our New England connection.
20:46Yes.
20:46Celtics up three games to one over Philadelphia.
20:49Yeah, they are.
20:50Yeah, they are.
20:51Absolutely.
20:51This is, this is, we're filming this before tonight's game five, Celtics in Florida.
20:56How do you feel right now about the team?
20:58I'm feeling good.
20:59My boys are back.
21:00They're healthy.
21:01They're in sync with each other.
21:02It's a wonderful thing.
21:03It's a wonderful thing.
21:04Jason, coming back, I'm very happy about.
21:06And I, I think the last time, or the last, yeah, the championship, I had to get on a plane.
21:12Yes.
21:12And I watched that game in tears on the plane that I couldn't be, somebody said, oh, well,
21:20oh, I was so sad that I, like, couldn't be there and I couldn't make it.
21:25And so I'm like, I don't know how.
21:27So you, you, hopefully this time you'll air travel.
21:31You'll just schedule your air travel a little bit better.
21:32While I'm also, like, in a show on Broadway that I can't miss.
21:35Yeah.
21:36We know where you'll be.
21:37We know where you'll be.
21:38Yeah.
21:38So then they can come down here and do the parade.
21:41You think they'll do the parade for the Celtics here?
21:43If I ask really politely.
21:45I don't know.
21:45Maybe.
21:47Congrats on the show and thanks for being here.
21:48Thank you very much.
21:48It's always a lovely show.
21:49Thanks for having me.
21:50I hope that we have a great treat for coming Broadway now at the Booth Theater.
21:54This is July 19.
21:55Stick around.
21:55I'll be right back with Matthew Reed.
22:11Welcome back, everybody.
22:12Our next guest is an Emmy-winning actor you know from shows like The Americans, Perry Mason, and The Beast
22:17and Me.
22:17He currently stars in Widow's Bay, which premieres April 29th on Apple TV.
22:21Let's take a look.
22:22I was talking to the guy on the ferry, and he said something odd.
22:26What was that?
22:28He said bad things happen here.
22:33You know, Arthur, there is something about these seafaring towns, the superstitions, their tall tales.
22:40Maybe it's that stories help pass a long day at sea.
22:43I don't know.
22:43But I find it charming myself.
22:45Was there cannibalism?
22:47No.
22:48Well, the article behind you.
22:51Forced inside the church, they immediately turned to cannibalism.
22:55I don't think that's right.
22:56I mean, it's on a framed article inside the historical society.
23:00Yeah.
23:00Please welcome back to the show our friend Matthew Reed.
23:21Hello, friend.
23:22How are you?
23:23We were lamenting backstage.
23:24It's been three years since you've been on the show.
23:26And I thought I did something wrong.
23:27Did I do something wrong?
23:28No.
23:28Well, I think what you did wrong is you saw me socially in the world.
23:32And then I just assumed I'd been on.
23:33And I assumed as well.
23:35So I didn't go out of my way.
23:36Well, because we had a very.
23:36I told you stories and you laughed.
23:38And I was like, and I felt in my mind.
23:40I'm like, we've been, we've done this.
23:41We danced.
23:42We had a very special evening.
23:44You bought a boat from the 1930s.
23:47It was called the rare bit.
23:48It was.
23:48A gorgeous boat.
23:49And you decided to sell it.
23:52And I went on your final voyage.
23:53You did.
23:54You were on.
23:55Yes.
23:55The talisman for the final voyage.
23:57And it must have been heartbreaking to sell it.
23:59Was it hard when that day came?
24:01What's happened?
24:04They withdrew from the sale.
24:05Oh, really?
24:06She's still currently for sale.
24:08Should anyone wish to purchase an old antique.
24:10But Matthew, Matthew, this is years ago.
24:14So you're saying this is not selling like hotcakes.
24:17This is not a hotcake that's being sold.
24:19When you now look back, do you realize how excited the person who you bought it from was?
24:24Yes.
24:24This is what I'm realizing.
24:25So there's not many people in the world who buy very old wooden boat.
24:29I restored the boat.
24:30There's not many people who buy them for the sole reason.
24:33This is why it almost cost me my marriage.
24:35Because you just kind of go, I've just got to go up into the boat.
24:37Something's happened again.
24:39Yeah.
24:40Because I'm not doing a good sales pitch here, actually.
24:43Yeah.
24:43It's a wonderful boat.
24:46She's sound.
24:47She's sound.
24:48I am not.
24:49But she is sound.
24:50Yeah.
24:50Because I remember saying to your partner, Carrie, like how I was so, I'm like, God,
24:54it's so cool that Matthew bought this boat.
24:55And she was, yeah.
24:58She's a very Larry David answer.
25:00Yeah.
25:01Yeah.
25:02We talked about how your mother's side of the family is very nautical.
25:05Was she at least happy when you bought a boat?
25:07No.
25:08Okay.
25:08Because for the sole reason, they're all sailors.
25:11And when I said, you know, I said, I bought an old wooden boat.
25:15And they were like, oh, for a minute then, I thought you said an old wooden boat.
25:19And I went, yeah, yeah, that would be stupid.
25:23So they're not that happy.
25:25Well, they were like, more fool you.
25:27Yeah.
25:27Yeah.
25:27Good luck.
25:28This show, this takes place on a New England island.
25:31Yes.
25:32It's a wonderful show.
25:34Very nautical themed as well.
25:35Yes, yes.
25:36Do you enjoy that element of it?
25:37Love it.
25:37We got to shoot in places like Gloucester and Rockport.
25:40You know, I was in my natural element.
25:42But, you know, I'm not saying it's an enormous departure for me, but I don't do comedy.
25:47This is, you know, dare I say a comedy horror.
25:51Yeah.
25:51A tough tone to crack.
25:53I've done some horrific performances in my past.
25:56That were very funny to watch.
25:58Yes.
25:59People laughed in the wrong places.
26:00Yes.
26:01It's very funny.
26:02You're very funny in it.
26:02Well, thanks very much.
26:03Do you feel like there's a, when you're in a New England town, a seafaring New England
26:07town, do you feel a connection to your, to Wales?
26:09Do you feel there's a similarity?
26:11I do.
26:11Massachusetts, New England reminded me enormously.
26:14The people reminded me, the place reminded me enormously of home.
26:17So I felt, I felt right at home with those, with those salty people shouting, get out of
26:22here.
26:23And they're like, oh, they're talking to me.
26:24Yeah.
26:24That's like, oh, sorry.
26:25Nothing makes you feel more at home in New England when people are yelling at you to
26:29leave.
26:29Leave.
26:29Yeah.
26:29Or if you say you live in New York.
26:31That I found I should never say in Massachusetts.
26:34No.
26:34Yes.
26:35Especially when you have the benefit of a non-New York accent.
26:37Like, to bring it up is idiotic.
26:39They were just like, oh, leave now.
26:40Yeah.
26:41Oh, yes.
26:41Before we burn you.
26:42Did you, uh, it's a show, obviously, there's a horror element.
26:46Yes.
26:46The people in the town are very superstitious.
26:48They are.
26:48They are indeed.
26:49Are the Welsh superstitious people?
26:51You couldn't throw a stone in Wales without there being a superstition behind it.
26:56Or some kind of myth or legend or fable or some kind of warlock and wizard that fought
27:01a dragon that killed someone.
27:03And I was like, oh, my God.
27:04It's like, let's let it go with the myths and legends.
27:06You, uh, you mentioned this is a comedy.
27:09It's very funny.
27:09There's, uh, an episode where your character's on mushrooms.
27:12Yes.
27:13It's a very funny performance.
27:14Well, thanks very much.
27:15Did you do any, uh, research?
27:20No.
27:21No?
27:21Yes.
27:22I'm a fun guy.
27:24You're a...
27:25Everybody says you're a fun guy.
27:27Yes.
27:28That was the mushroom joke.
27:29Yeah.
27:29Um, uh, you also...
27:32Yeah.
27:36I watch a lot of YouTube videos.
27:37See, I grew up in a time...
27:39I grew up in a time...
27:42Before I began...
27:43When I started acting, YouTube wasn't around.
27:46We used to have to go to places to research with a notebook and, like, a tape recorder.
27:49Yeah.
27:49Now, you just go...
27:50You go...
27:51You look at YouTube, you go, people on mushrooms.
27:53And it comes up.
27:54And so you just watch YouTube?
27:56Yes.
27:56That's fantastic.
27:57I watch all kinds of tests on people and hallucinogens.
28:00And I went, oh, God, this is so cruel.
28:02But I stole all of it.
28:03You stole it?
28:04All of it.
28:04I think they'd appreciate it.
28:06Something good came of it.
28:07I think something good came of it.
28:08That's what I wrote to them.
28:10In the comments section?
28:12Yes.
28:12Thank you for your service.
28:15All right.
28:15So you know how to ride a horse, which I'm shocked by.
28:18But this was not a skill you learned in Wales.
28:20It was a skill I learned in Wales.
28:21Oh, it was.
28:21Yes, yes.
28:22I'm sort of kind of...
28:23On Dad's side of the family, they're all farmers.
28:25And they had...
28:25Some of them had horses.
28:27And we would just jump on and, you know, teach ourselves.
28:30So you knew enough about riding horses that when you got invited to a rodeo competition...
28:34Yes.
28:35...recently...
28:35Yes.
28:36...you said yes.
28:36I said, of course I'll do a rodeo.
28:39Show me your American ways.
28:41How did a rodeo invite even come across your desk?
28:45So a friend of mine is actually...
28:47It's Taylor Sheridan and his wife.
28:48They do an incredible charity event for UT Southwestern.
28:51And it's a cutting competition.
28:53Do you know what cutting is?
28:54I didn't.
28:55Very few.
28:56Yeah.
28:56Well, they said, come do cutting.
28:57I went, what does that mean?
28:59They said, we cut cows.
29:01I was like, that's barbaric!
29:02What about these poor cows?
29:04I thought we'd have machetes and box cutters and we'd be like, get the cows!
29:08It's not.
29:08It's not.
29:09That's good.
29:09Yes.
29:10You cut one calf or steer from the herd and then try and keep it away from the herd.
29:14Okay.
29:15Gotcha.
29:15Yes.
29:15So this is more than just riding a horse.
29:17More than riding a horse.
29:19I found out.
29:20Yeah.
29:20Yes.
29:21It's like dancing.
29:21It's like horse dancing.
29:22All right.
29:23So...
29:23Um, yeah.
29:24Um, so here's, like, these are photos.
29:26Like, you actually look like you know what you're doing there.
29:28I looked like I knew what I'm on the bunt.
29:31That's true.
29:33Is this...
29:34You shouldn't applaud because I dress up for a living.
29:38Is this you getting a, is this you getting a belt buckle?
29:40That's what it looks like to me.
29:41Oh, you mean this old thing?
29:53I have not taken that off in two weeks.
29:56Celebrity cutting.
29:57So you were in Fort Worth, Texas.
29:58No joke.
29:59It was a, it was, it was, it was, it was Taylor Sheridan and his wife.
30:02It was a, it was a kind of pro-celebrity.
30:04So celebrities were paired with real professional cutters.
30:08Yeah.
30:08And then your combined score was, uh, you know, what won it.
30:11But the reason I was invited is because, uh, a dear friend of mine
30:16who played my brother on a show called Brothers and Sisters,
30:18who's in a Taylor Sheridan show called Lioness,
30:21said, you like horses, why don't you come?
30:22So I came.
30:23And then in the tunnel before going out,
30:25I could see all these actors on Taylor Sheridan shows
30:27just looking at me like, what Taylor Sheridan show is he on?
30:31Yeah.
30:32So I sort of made one up.
30:33Yeah.
30:34I didn't.
30:34I didn't.
30:34There's a lot of Taylor.
30:35I'm Jell-Ostone.
30:36You can make up a Taylor Sheridan.
30:38There's so many.
30:39Right?
30:39They wouldn't know.
30:40No.
30:40They wouldn't know.
30:41Yeah.
30:42I kind of went with that.
30:42I was like, don't worry about it.
30:43It's coming out.
30:43It's coming out.
30:44I'm in Yellowstone 1934.
30:45Yeah.
30:46Yeah.
30:46Yeah.
30:46They'd be like, oh, I can't wait to see it.
30:482048.
30:50There's like, there's one in the future?
30:51Yeah.
30:51Yeah.
30:52But we don't like to talk about it.
30:53Wow.
30:53Yes.
30:53And not that far into the future.
30:55No, no.
30:55Just enough.
30:56Just enough.
30:57Yes.
30:57But just enough to travel back and say,
30:59we bought the wrong bit of land.
31:01Yeah.
31:02So there's actual, so Yellowstone 2048,
31:05there's actual time travel elements as well.
31:07Yes.
31:07I come back and warn them about things.
31:11that you're going to spoil this here.
31:13He doesn't know yet.
31:15I'm going to pitch him.
31:16I think it's a winner.
31:17All right.
31:17We actually have video of you on the cutting horse.
31:20Were you nervous?
31:21Were you nervous?
31:22All right.
31:23I was terrified.
31:26I would be terrified.
31:27I'm not judging you.
31:28I mean, I would never agree to do it.
31:29But here you are.
31:30And let me just say, I'm very impressed
31:31that you, Matthew Rhys, have a name
31:33that a rodeo caller can pronounce.
31:45Oh, thank you, Matthew Rhys.
31:50Matthew Rhys.
31:52Matthew Rhys.
31:56In fairness, I don't have a vowel in my name.
32:01No, no.
32:02It was anyone's guess.
32:03Until I was taught, that's definitely how I said it as well.
32:06I said it until I was 18.
32:07And my parents were like, it's not how we say our name.
32:09Really?
32:09What's wrong with you?
32:10I was like, I'm sorry.
32:12You and your partner, Kerry, met on The Americans,
32:14one of my favorite shows of all time.
32:15We did.
32:16Fantastic show.
32:18I think a lot of us viewers of that show
32:21kind of discovered over the run of it,
32:23oh, you know, they're a couple in real life.
32:24Yes.
32:25The way the crew and the other cast found that out
32:28was not because of, like, some grand announcement.
32:30No, no, it was very unplanned.
32:33And I'll try and make this brief.
32:34What happened was, it was quite terrifying, actually,
32:37but we were together in an apartment,
32:41and she woke me up and said,
32:42I think there's someone in the apartment.
32:43I said, there's no one in the apartment.
32:45And then I heard someone saying something,
32:47and I went, oh, there's someone in the apartment.
32:49And then I thought, now, because it was early days,
32:52and I thought, whatever I do next
32:55might define the way she regards me for the rest of my life.
32:58So there was a kind of a fire set,
33:01so I picked up a poker.
33:03Instead of locking ourselves in the bathroom,
33:05calling 911, which we should do,
33:07I went, you stay here.
33:09I shall go out.
33:11And I think my classically trained pipes
33:16made them flee, thankfully.
33:18So they fled.
33:19Anyway, they caught them very quickly,
33:21apprehended them, Kerry filed a report,
33:23and then the DA, I think, was retiring,
33:25and they were like, oh, we'd love to bring you
33:26your things back and present them to you on set
33:28and do a photograph of the DA
33:30and the NYPD officers who caught them.
33:31And she's like, no, no, no, that's all right.
33:33I'll just come to a precinct to pick them up.
33:35She's like, no, no, no, we'll come to set,
33:37and we'll take a photograph and present them to you.
33:39And she's like, please, please don't.
33:42So they, very kindly, and God bless them,
33:44and thank you for their service,
33:45came to set and held up a bag and went,
33:48we caught them, and here's her bag.
33:50And then the young PA who's next to me indeed went,
33:53no, no, that's Matthew's bag.
33:54And I was like, shut up!
33:57And then taking it out, and here's her watch!
34:00And like, no, no, that's Matthew's watch!
34:02I was like, shut up!
34:05And lo, it came to pass that we were together.
34:07I mean, that way you don't have to overthink it.
34:09You know what?
34:09You just leave it.
34:10Everyone knows, one clean sweep,
34:12didn't have to hire a publicist, it was great.
34:13I think any time you want to tell people
34:15about a new relationship, just leave it to the NYPD.
34:18Leave it, let them turn up.
34:20Let the police turn up and explain it.
34:22Yes, exactly.
34:23Congrats on the show.
34:25It's fantastic.
34:25Thanks for being here.
34:26Thank you, as always.
34:27Matthew Reeves, everybody.
34:29Widow's Bay, premieres April 29th on Apple TV.
34:32We'll be right back at the beginning of the day.
34:47Hey, everybody.
34:48We're here with Sabrina Rundin,
34:50founder of Spring Cafe and Spring Cafe Aspen,
34:53and author of her new cookbook,
34:54Healthy with a Side of Happiness on Today.
34:56Sabrina, can we toast?
34:58Yes.
34:59We're going to toast, as with all things.
35:00I know you like a cocktail, but this is a juice
35:02to keep you from the book, to keep you extra healthy.
35:05Your food at your restaurant is very healthy.
35:07I'm a huge fan of it.
35:08My whole family is.
35:09We bring our kids there because it's good, healthy food,
35:12and my wife sent me so many pictures
35:13of our kids eating at your restaurant,
35:15and I said I can't show these
35:16because the kids are so disgusting, the way they eat.
35:19Mine are, too, when they eat there.
35:21I know, but your food is beautiful,
35:22and showing it with my kids eating it seemed deeply unfair.
35:25I would have loved to see that, but no, thank you.
35:26All right, what are we making today?
35:28We are making superhero burritos with tofu.
35:31Okay, great.
35:32And we're going to start cooking,
35:33and actually, you love this burrito.
35:36I do love this burrito.
35:37And I don't know if I'm allowed to say this on television.
35:40Go for it.
35:40But when we first opened, you ordered a burrito.
35:45Online.
35:45Online.
35:46And I got a text from my manager.
35:49The whole team was really excited when they saw your name,
35:51and she said, I have good news and bad news,
35:53which is always never a text you want to get
35:55when you own a restaurant.
35:57She said, the good news is Seth Meyers ordered a burrito.
36:00The bad news is he didn't get it
36:02because he ordered it to the Aspen location.
36:04I did.
36:04I did.
36:05I did.
36:06Yeah, it was a little unfortunate.
36:07You know, I will say, like,
36:08I sometimes order pizza at the wrong of two pizza places,
36:11and you only have to, like, walk two avenues.
36:13This was a little harder.
36:13When I was like, when it's in Aspen,
36:15I'm like, I'm not going to have that burrito.
36:16Well, we're making it here to make sure you get one tonight.
36:19All right, great.
36:19All right, so what do we do?
36:20We're going to pour in the avocado oil,
36:22and then I want you to cook.
36:24So here, throw in the onions.
36:25Okay, great.
36:26I'm going to do onions, peppers.
36:28I love when people give me the easiest job.
36:31I'll throw in those.
36:33Mushrooms.
36:35Potatoes.
36:35Oh, I did that.
36:36Sorry, I did that one.
36:36Tofu?
36:37Well, stir.
36:38Let's stir a little.
36:39Just, we don't want to, you know, we want to.
36:40Don't correct me on my show.
36:43So, just throw it in all together.
36:45Eat it.
36:46Yep, all right, great.
36:46Okay, and then we're going to let this brown.
36:48Okay.
36:49We want to do a pinch of salt.
36:51Season as you go.
36:52Season as you go.
36:52And how long would you, if you had the time to do it,
36:55how long would you actually do this part?
36:57Well, I probably would have let the onions cook down
36:59for two to three minutes.
37:00Okay.
37:00But it's like five minutes all in.
37:02And then we're going to add the tofu.
37:05Great.
37:05And now, do you want to add the seasoning?
37:07I would love to.
37:08We have some cumin, turmeric.
37:09How much of it?
37:09Just pinches?
37:10Pinch or just go all in.
37:12Great.
37:12Just get in there.
37:14That's great, because it gives it a lovely color,
37:16a lovely taste.
37:17Lovely color.
37:17We want the tofu to brown.
37:19Yeah, okay.
37:19This is very healthy.
37:20And then break it down a little bit,
37:23because we don't want these chunks.
37:24No, no.
37:24Nobody wants the chunks.
37:26You want to, you know, mash.
37:28And how many years have you had both restaurants?
37:31It'll be 13 in July.
37:33Congratulations.
37:34And five and a half years.
37:37And it was the key when you were putting
37:38the cookbook together.
37:39Obviously, you know it's people who want to eat healthy food,
37:41but you want to make it so there are actual recipes
37:43they can make.
37:44Was that?
37:44Yes, I wanted it to be approachable, simple.
37:47I think people get really intimidated by vegetables
37:49and vegetarian food.
37:50I think we're good.
37:51It's crumbled.
37:52I feel like either this should be a little bit bigger
37:54or we should put a little few onions.
37:56Or maybe just taking our time a little bit more.
38:00But, you know, when you do it at home,
38:01it'll look like this because of the magic of TV.
38:05So this is our feeling.
38:06Very good juice.
38:06This is our feeling.
38:07Really?
38:08I'm so glad.
38:08I had them put tequila in mine.
38:11I was going to say,
38:12that was really a winning endorsement.
38:14Yeah, no, it's really good.
38:15And your food is really good.
38:18Thanks.
38:19All right.
38:19Okay, so now you ready to roll a burrito?
38:21That's right.
38:21Yeah, okay.
38:22Okay.
38:22So you're going to take your filling.
38:24Okay.
38:25And put some.
38:26And don't overload it.
38:27Or overload it.
38:28Okay.
38:29That seems right.
38:30Okay.
38:30Burrito maker beware.
38:32So just put in as much as you'd like.
38:34And then I know you love hot sauce.
38:35I love hot sauce.
38:36So I brought some Spring Cafe hot sauce for you.
38:39Great.
38:40And add that in.
38:41And then cheese.
38:42I like a little extra cheese.
38:44So I'm going to sprinkle that.
38:46And then sour cream.
38:48I mostly feel very confident about this.
38:50And I'm worried about rolling it.
38:52Okay, but you have three kids.
38:54So remember swaddling them as babies?
38:56It's like a swaddle.
38:57It's like a tuck roll.
38:59Right.
38:59Guac.
39:00Did you do guac?
39:00I'm going to do some guac.
39:01Okay.
39:01All right.
39:02So.
39:03So you can do either.
39:04You know what?
39:05I need a little more filling.
39:06It's just, if this had legs, I would know how to do it.
39:10The absence of legs is making it harder.
39:11Okay.
39:12We're going to go like this.
39:13Uh-huh.
39:14And then you kind of fold over.
39:17And then you want to pull it in tight.
39:20You need a tight burrito.
39:21Or a tight roll.
39:22Oh, look at that.
39:23That's a good burrito.
39:26Okay.
39:26All right.
39:27See?
39:28Yep.
39:28I'm going to have a bite now.
39:29Can I have a bite?
39:29You can.
39:30I mean, we have a really nicely cut one for you.
39:32But you can have a bite of this one.
39:33Okay, no, I'll have a nicely cut one.
39:34I feel like you just shamed mine.
39:37No, no, no.
39:38It looks beautiful.
39:41Good?
39:43It was.
39:45I'm so good.
39:46I'm so good.
39:46Sabrina Rudin, everybody.
