00:07Lanno Norwich, der erste Mann
00:09zu qualifieren Mercedes
00:12in einer Sprint Qualifikation
00:15dieses Jahr.
00:151.27.8.6.9
00:17Kimi Antonelli hat in ein paar
00:19Sektors geöffnet,
00:22aber in der Ende war es genug.
00:23Ist es fair zu sagen,
00:24das ist gut für die Championship?
00:26Es ist nicht es.
00:28Ich denke, wir sind ein bisschen
00:29sicher, dass Kimi war das weit
00:31so ein tolles Lando.
00:33Es ist toll zu sehen.
00:36Es ist nicht der einzige Start zu der
00:37Jahr für McLaren.
00:38Scharl war wirklich, wirklich
00:40stark auf die Mediens, aber dann
00:41auf die Softs, die Ferraris
00:42fällt ein bisschen.
00:44Die Tire verändert sich die
00:46für das?
00:47Es ist auch wirklich, wirklich
00:49hot out da.
00:49Es war ein bisschen
00:50für ihn in der Hepp.
00:52Er hat sich nicht
00:53getrennt genug
00:54und dann hat er
00:55ein bisschen Zeit
00:55auf der Exit.
00:56Aber wirklich gut,
00:58wirklich positive.
00:59Wir wussten, dass wir
01:00ein paar Veränderungen
01:01mit all diesen
01:01developments und
01:02upgrade packages.
01:02Aber es war wirklich
01:04wie es
01:04ein Mercedes-Benz
01:05war.
01:05Der Jahr ist
01:08komplett open.
01:09Es ist ein guter
01:10Resultat.
01:10Und ich denke,
01:10es wird alles
01:11wiederholfen.
01:12wiederholfen.
01:13Und es hat sich
01:15wiederholfen,
01:16dass wir
01:17Wir haben
01:18wiederholfen,
01:18dass wir
01:18die Fahrräder
01:19haben.
01:20Wir verstehen,
01:21dass wir
01:22haben.
01:23Wir verstehen,
01:25dass wir
01:26die Fahrräder
01:33haben.
01:34die Fahrräder
01:35Die Fahrräder
01:35sind wirklich gut
01:35von Faktor
01:36zu Track.
01:37Ja,
01:37ich meine,
01:38es hat eine
01:38gute Fahrräder
01:39in Japan.
01:40Es war
01:41nicht so schnell
01:41als die Fahrräder
01:42war.
01:42aber sie
01:43noch nicht
01:43gewonnen,
01:44die Fahrräder
01:45war.
01:46Sie waren
01:48quick
01:48und jetzt
01:48mit diesen
01:49upgrades.
01:49Es ist
01:50schön,
01:52Lando
01:52hat
01:53das
01:53Sprint
01:54und
01:54mit
01:59Andrea
01:59Well,

02:49sehr
02:50gute
02:51gute
02:51Arbeit

02:55Es ist
02:57gut

03:320
03:330
03:330
03:340
03:350
03:350
03:35Mercedes, you know, ultimately
03:37when on the soft tyres, when they put
03:39everything together, they were very close.
03:41So I think
03:42it's also interesting for the sport.
03:45We have seen Red Bull more competitive,
03:47Ferrari, McLaren.
03:48I think that's good. We should have good racing
03:51here in Miami and hopefully good
03:53racing in the following
03:55races. But what's important is that
03:57McLaren is there and we can have a very
03:59interesting competition.
04:01Great stuff. Thank you very much, Andrea. We'll see you
04:03for the sprint tomorrow.
04:06Well, let's take a look at how
04:08his driver, Lando Norris, took
04:09that sprint pole. He's on the left,
04:11Kimi Antonelli on the right. Now down
04:14into turn one, a lot of drivers
04:16struggling under braking here.
04:17Antonelli, it looks like, just went a little bit deep.
04:20Not a full lock-up, but just a bit
04:22of under-rotation there that
04:23compromised his line in the exit
04:25when he came out of that corner.
04:27Now through turns four, five, and six,
04:30it looks like the McLaren
04:32has just that
04:34ability to chuck the speed in.
04:36Lando really, really confident in the car on the way in.
04:39Different lines for both drivers.
04:41We'll just slow it down here.
04:41You can have a look as they come through
04:43the long, long left hand of seven into eight.
04:46Lando slightly tighter line.
04:48Antonelli choosing
04:49a slightly wider line.
04:50I think the McLaren actually,
04:52if I go back and use that curb as a reference
04:55there, you can see
04:57how much Lando is ahead
04:58of Antonelli. He gained three-tenths in the first sector.
05:01Now interestingly,
05:02I was just looking at some of the Mercedes comparison
05:04and speaking to the engineers,
05:06Antonelli was actually quicker than George Russell
05:08by some margin
05:09through that high-speed section.
05:11So it does seem like
05:13it's a car characteristic
05:15where McLaren have added
05:16that aerodynamic upgrade and performance.
05:18It's paid dividends here.
05:20Let's look down
05:21into the Turn 11 braking zone.
05:24Again, I'll just slow down here.
05:26And Lando on this occasion there,
05:29a little bit tentative
05:29with the wheel going in,
05:31slightly different line,
05:32and then had a little bit of a snap.
05:33So that put him on a tighter trajectory
05:35than I think he would have liked
05:37for 12.
05:38And through this entire section,
05:39really nothing to choose between them.
05:41Martin mentioned the judgment
05:43here on that curb.
05:45I just want to show you.
05:46Look at them up against that wall.
05:48It's incredible, isn't it,
05:49to see how close he is
05:50to that wall there.
05:52Beautiful judgment
05:53from Lando on this.
05:54Brings the car back now.
05:55He talked about
05:56this slight under-rotation
05:57into 16.
05:58Let's watch.
05:59Look at the front left tire there.
06:01And it's unfortunately
06:02slightly in the shadow.
06:03But you can see
06:03he just had a bit of a lockup.
06:05Slightly wider that curb.
06:06And then he gets that snap
06:07as he tries to unleash the power
06:09down the back straight.
06:11So Lando himself said
06:12that was the only thing
06:13that he felt
06:14didn't quite get hooked up
06:15around the lap.
06:17Into the final braking zone here
06:19and the drivers making sure
06:21they're in exactly the right
06:22settings they need
06:23for the harvesting
06:24and the brake balance.
06:25Both drivers, I have to say,
06:27did a good job
06:28of getting the nose
06:28into the apex
06:29at a corner
06:30which has been difficult.
06:31Not as hard as term one
06:32but still difficult
06:33for a lot of drivers.
06:34So really all the time
06:35lost for Antonelli
06:36was in sector one.
06:38In sectors two and three
06:39hardly anything.
06:40We're talking hundreds
06:40between them.
06:41But it was that slight
06:43bit of hesitation
06:44at term one
06:45and the entry
06:46through four, five,
06:47at six
06:47where the McLaren
06:48seemed to have
06:48the upper hand.
06:49Back to you.
06:54OK, right, let's get
06:55straight to George Russell.
06:57Issues with grip
06:58and a little bit
06:58of deployment
06:59we understand.
07:00Here he is talking
07:00to Rachel.
07:03Hey George,
07:05it just felt like
07:05you guys were just
07:06generally a little bit
07:07off today.
07:07Can you talk me through
07:08FP1 and your kind of
07:10feelings after not quite
07:11making it through
07:11to the front row today?
07:12Yeah, I mean,
07:12pretty surprising
07:13how big a jump
07:15McLaren and Ferrari
07:16have made.
07:17So that's pretty
07:18damn impressive.
07:19We knew they'd
07:19probably close the gap
07:20but, you know,
07:21all day they've been
07:22quicker than us.
07:23My side have been
07:23struggling today.
07:26Miami's not a track
07:26that I love,
07:27to be honest,
07:28especially with
07:28these hotter conditions.
07:31But, you know,
07:31it's only sprint
07:32qualifying,
07:32so let's see
07:33what tomorrow brings.
07:34What were the key
07:35struggles today?
07:36What kind of was the feel?
07:37Where were you feeling
07:38like you were kind of
07:38missing something?
07:39I was just overheating
07:40the tyres a lot
07:40in that twisty section
07:41in the middle.
07:42I was struggling
07:42to get the right balance
07:45with the car.
07:47So, yeah,
07:48not much more to say
07:49than that really,
07:50as I said,
07:51just being quite surprised
07:51by the progress
07:53of the others.
07:55But another day tomorrow.
07:56And do you think
07:56it would take a lot
07:57to take the fight
07:58to them tomorrow?
08:01I don't know.
08:01You know,
08:02I'm not in a great
08:02starting position.
08:03Sprint races
08:04generally don't offer
08:05that much,
08:06but obviously,
08:06you know,
08:07China was a bit more
08:07interesting this year,
08:11which gives an opportunity
08:12to have a bit of a race.
08:13So, yeah,
08:14I want to get off the line,
08:15hopefully don't lose
08:16any more positions
08:17and see what we can do.
08:18Best lad to write.
08:21Policy used to Rachel.
08:22That obviously was to Rachel.
08:22That was Lawrence Barreto
08:23asking the questions.
08:24I think what would bother him
08:25most is that he was
08:26four tenths of his teammate,
08:27though.
08:27Yeah, I'm sure he would
08:29not have liked that.
08:30But I guess what's even
08:31more concerning for him
08:31is he doesn't seem
08:32to be getting the most
08:33out of the car.
08:34He doesn't have that confidence
08:35because he doesn't have
08:35the balance that he needs.
08:36And, you know,
08:37even though this is not
08:38a street circuit,
08:39it sort of feels like one
08:39when you're out there.
08:40The walls are very nearby
08:41and you can't push yourself
08:42to your limits
08:43if you're not feeling
08:44like the car's going to do
08:45what you want it to do.
08:45And to look across
08:47the garage and see
08:47that your much younger
08:49teammate, who's much
08:50less experienced,
08:51is able to just extract
08:52so much.
08:52I mean, that comparison
08:53that Karun showed us
08:55with him and Norris,
08:57it almost looked like
08:59he had a cleaner lap
08:59than Norris did
09:00out there, actually.
09:01So he just extracted
09:02everything out of the car
09:02in the session.
09:03We know that their
09:05big upgrade package,
09:06by the way,
09:06in case you weren't
09:07watching earlier,
09:07comes in in Montreal
09:09in two weeks' time.
09:10They've given them
09:10so they're kind of
09:11out of sync with the
09:12other two that are
09:13challenging them most closely.
09:15when we see that.
09:17But at the same time,
09:18they've just been off it
09:19slightly this weekend
09:20from the start.
09:21I mean, they were
09:21fighting fires,
09:22weren't they,
09:22with Kimi's car
09:23at the end of practice,
09:24but also George
09:25had something up with it.
09:26Yeah, we all have
09:27bogey tracks,
09:28you know, as drivers,
09:29but it's surprising
09:30how far he is off of
09:31Kimi in qualifying there.
09:33so he's a bit downbeat,
09:34but, you know,
09:35this is one race weekend,
09:36but he's just going to
09:37maximise what he can do
09:38with the car
09:39in the championship fight.
09:41But, no,
09:42McLaren looks quick,
09:43really quick.
09:44The Ferrari's dropped
09:45away a little bit
09:46in NSQ3,
09:47which is quite surprising.
09:50But it's great for us
09:51seeing all this action
09:52and different people
09:54at the front
09:54in every session.
09:55100%.
09:56We'll come back to Ferrari,
09:57but let's focus on
09:58Max Verstappen
09:59for the moment.
09:59This time,
10:00it's definitely Rachel.
10:03Hi, Max.
10:04It looks like
10:04you've made a big step
10:05with the car.
10:06I know it's not
10:06where you want to be yet,
10:07but does it feel like
10:08you've made a big step
10:09coming here?
10:09It feels more together.
10:12Of course,
10:13there's still things
10:14that we are working on,
10:15but it's been
10:16a really positive step
10:18for us.
10:19You know,
10:20last few races,
10:20we were, like,
10:21over a second behind.
10:22I would say
10:23we have almost
10:24halved that gap now,
10:25so that's positive.
10:27We're still very weak
10:28in the first sector,
10:29which is mainly high speed,
10:30so we know
10:31that we need
10:31to work on that.
10:33But, yeah,
10:33the rest seemed
10:34all a bit more together,
10:35so a bit happier
10:36with that.
10:37At least,
10:37it seems like
10:38we have cleared
10:39a little bit
10:40the midfield,
10:41let's say.
10:41And does it feel
10:42better driving?
10:43Because I know
10:43in the past
10:44you've said
10:44various things
10:45on the radio,
10:46just things you need
10:46from the car.
10:47Does it feel better
10:47and suit you better now?
10:49It feels a bit more
10:49normal,
10:50a bit more together.
10:51It's still not
10:51where I want it to be,
10:52obviously,
10:53but it's at least
10:55allowing me
10:56to trust it a bit more
10:57and I can basically
10:59take a bit more
10:59lap time out of it.
11:00Thank you.
11:01Thanks very much.
11:03That's a problem.
11:04I was talking to
11:04one of the Dutch
11:06commentators,
11:06and I think
11:06the main issue
11:07that they were finding
11:08is that they were
11:09getting different
11:10reactions from the car
11:11in the same corner.
11:13and he couldn't trust it
11:14as he pointed out there.
11:15I mean,
11:15that was one of the issues,
11:16but as he also mentioned,
11:17to half the gap,
11:19it seems that Max
11:20is a little bit happier.
11:21Yeah,
11:21and I think that
11:22everything that the drivers
11:22are doing out there now
11:23is maybe a little bit more,
11:25you know,
11:25what comes to them
11:26second nature.
11:27You know,
11:27it's a little bit more
11:28in the nature of what
11:28drivers do out there
11:29and of course you can see
11:31that the gap's closing,
11:32but there's still obviously
11:33more work for them to do.
11:34I don't think Max
11:34is here to,
11:35you know,
11:35fill the numbers
11:36and be down in sixth
11:37or fifth or wherever he is.
11:38Fifth, yeah.
11:39Fifth, yeah.
11:39I mean,
11:40we're hyping it up,
11:41but it is still fifth.
11:42It is still a little
11:42over half a second
11:43off the pace,
11:44but it's a step
11:45in the right direction.
11:46But you also know
11:46with Max
11:47that he's absolutely
11:48going to call it
11:49as he sees it.
11:50Yeah.
11:50If he thinks
11:51there's been some improvements
11:52in qualifying,
11:52not where he wants it,
11:53but better,
11:55that's encouraging.
11:56It is,
11:56and if you look
11:56at his sectors,
11:57sector two and sector three
11:58were very strong,
11:59especially sector three.
12:00He was purple
12:01for most of the session.
12:02It's the high speed
12:03that they seem
12:04to be struggling,
12:05and it's not just
12:05a small amount either.
12:06He was six tenths down,
12:08I think,
12:09in the first sector.
12:09Yeah, and then he hauled it back,
12:10didn't he?
12:11So it's the high speed
12:12they need to work on.
12:13Low speed,
12:13mechanical grip
12:14seems to be good,
12:15straight line speed's good,
12:16so it's the high speed,
12:17which isn't an easy thing
12:18to work on.
12:19You can't just bolt
12:19more downforce on,
12:20so it's going to take
12:21a bit of time,
12:22but at least they know
12:23where the issues lie.
12:24Okay, when we come back,
12:25we're going to take
12:25a short break.
12:26We'll discuss where
12:27and how Ferrari
12:29fell away in that session
12:30because it was looking
12:31really good for Charles Leclerc
12:32on the mediums,
12:34but then less so
12:35on the softs.
12:36So Leclerc in fourth,
12:37his teammate,
12:39in seventh.
12:47Look at the back,
12:48as I was mentioning
12:49before the break,
12:50Ferrari somewhat fell away
12:52in sprint qualifying.
12:54Fourth and seventh,
12:55here they both are.
12:58Charles, how was that?
12:59How did you find
13:00the updates
13:01that he had brought?
13:03Upgrades are fine.
13:06It's just that
13:07everybody brought upgrades,
13:08so we kind of expected
13:10that situation
13:11where Mercedes
13:12is probably still
13:13the car to beat.
13:14McLaren did a very big
13:15step forward,
13:16but I felt like
13:17they didn't really
13:18optimize their first
13:19races of the season,
13:20so they were always there,
13:21but they didn't put
13:23everything together
13:23on our side.
13:25We have just been,
13:26today particularly,
13:27we've struggled
13:27with tires.
13:29Medium were working
13:30very well on the soft,
13:32it wasn't a nice feeling,
13:34so on that we've got
13:35to look at it.
13:37We know that
13:38in the race pace
13:38we are stronger,
13:40but in terms of
13:42qualifying,
13:42there's still some work
13:43to be done.
13:43I was going to ask you,
13:44then, how do you see
13:45the rest of the weekend
13:45panning out, then,
13:46from what you've learned
13:47today?
13:50Well, I think in
13:51qualifying tomorrow
13:52we can try and
13:53fine-tune a little bit
13:54and find a bit of
13:55performance,
13:56but I hope that
13:57in the race
13:58we can come back
13:59in the front.
14:00We've got the pace
14:00to do that.
14:02Let's just see
14:03if we are able
14:04to overtake.
14:07How was it today?
14:08How was the car today?
14:09I don't know if it was
14:09performing,
14:10and was it as expected?
14:11I know you had that
14:11little slide,
14:12but other than that?
14:15No, we didn't really
14:16know what to expect.
14:17I had hoped that
14:18we would be better,
14:20but, yeah,
14:22the car didn't feel
14:22particularly great.
14:25Lots of teams
14:25brought upgrades.
14:26You've brought quite
14:27a big package.
14:27Were the team expecting
14:28more from here,
14:29or will it be better
14:30at other tracks,
14:31do you think?
14:31I have no idea.
14:32Sorry?
14:33I have no idea.
14:33I thought we would be
14:35stronger than we were
14:36today.
14:38We're going to have
14:38to do some work
14:40overnight to try
14:41and figure out
14:42why we're not that
14:43quick, and, yeah.
14:47I was hopeful
14:47coming in positive
14:48that we're going
14:49to be much higher,
14:50but not meant to be.
14:55Yeah, it's strange.
14:56We discussed it.
14:57We talked about
14:58the fall away
14:58for the soft,
14:59but if you look
15:00ahead to tomorrow,
15:01we know they're
15:02amazing off the line,
15:04and we know
15:04they're decent
15:05on the medium,
15:06so they've got
15:06a lot to look forward
15:07to.
15:07They could easily
15:08win this,
15:08couldn't they,
15:09from where they are?
15:09Yeah, they could.
15:10I mean, P4 to P1
15:12is tricky.
15:13It's a short run
15:13down to P1,
15:14isn't it?
15:15It does mean
15:16there's going to be
15:16a lot of action
15:17into P1,
15:17and we always find
15:18that here,
15:18so looking forward
15:19to that.
15:20But, yeah,
15:20they'll be disappointed
15:21with that.
15:22They've looked on it
15:23all weekend,
15:23especially Charles,
15:25and to be,
15:25what's he,
15:26four-tenths off pole,
15:27it's a lot.
15:28You two keep saying
15:29all weekend,
15:30it's been all day,
15:30right?
15:30You know,
15:31it's just been one day.
15:32It feels like
15:32it's been a weekend.
15:32It hasn't been a weekend
15:33yet, it's just been a day.
15:35But, no,
15:36it's true.
15:36I mean,
15:36they've obviously
15:36got an extremely long list.
15:39It's been a day.
15:40It's not even the weekend.
15:41It's Friday as well,
15:42isn't it?
15:43No,
15:43it's a very long list
15:44of upgrades,
15:44obviously,
15:45so I think they wanted
15:47and would have expected
15:47more,
15:48but it's natural,
15:49right?
15:49Everybody's making upgrades.
15:50You can never really know
15:51what everybody's got
15:52in the bag,
15:52and now we get
15:53the pecking order
15:54and they'll have
15:54more understanding
15:55of what they can unlock.
15:56Of course,
15:56tomorrow,
15:57after the sprint,
15:57they'll be able
15:58to change a few things,
15:59and, as you said,
16:00Sunday's another day,
16:01most points to be collected.
16:02There might be some tweaks
16:03for them to make that.
16:04I think,
16:04interestingly,
16:05there's such sort of
16:06big gaps between teammates
16:07and between teams,
16:09which is unusual,
16:10right?
16:10So I think they still
16:11haven't found their feet.
16:12They haven't found the setup
16:13that really works
16:14for them around here.
16:15It's hot.
16:16It's a tough track.
16:16It's still improving,
16:17so I think tomorrow
16:18we'll get a much closer race
16:21than what we have
16:21here in Qualifying.
16:22And, you know,
16:23if we are to believe
16:24the weather forecast,
16:24it could be vastly different
16:26come Sunday anyway,
16:27so it is a long weekend ahead,
16:29isn't it?
16:30It is a long,
16:30long weekend ahead.
16:31Two more days.
16:32But a couple of mistakes
16:33as well, Karun.
16:34What have you spotted
16:35with your eagle eyes?
16:38Yeah, that's right, Simon.
16:39I don't know
16:39if the Ferrari drivers
16:40were struggling a little bit
16:41with grip and balance
16:42on the soft tyre
16:43because if you look
16:45at the best McLaren,
16:46you know,
16:47they found seven tenths
16:48from the medium
16:49to the soft in SQ3.
16:51The best Mercedes
16:51was nine tenths.
16:53The best Ferrari,
16:54Leclerc,
16:54only found two tenths.
16:55Hamilton,
16:55only one tenth.
16:56So, yes,
16:57there were mistakes,
16:58but I think they just
16:58didn't quite look
16:59like they had the car
17:00underneath them.
17:01This is Leclerc
17:02into 11.
17:03A little bit of instability
17:04on the braking.
17:05That created a bit more
17:07of a snap
17:08as he went through
17:09the corner
17:09and then didn't quite
17:10have the grip
17:10through that whole sector,
17:13one corner or the other.
17:14When we got to 17,
17:15the final corner of the lap,
17:16let's have a look at it here
17:17as he comes down the straight,
17:20gets on the brakes
17:21and then goes deep
17:22and misses the apex there.
17:24So that cost him
17:25some lap time
17:26and interestingly,
17:27his teammate,
17:28Lewis Hamilton,
17:29also struggling
17:30at turn 17,
17:31but in a slightly different way,
17:32just slow it down here.
17:33He turns in
17:34and he's got
17:34rear instability there.
17:36See, the car
17:37with, I think,
17:38the rear tyres
17:39may be quite hot
17:40at that point,
17:41obviously,
17:41and just came around on him.
17:42So, poor minimum speed
17:44and then poor traction
17:45as well.
17:46But I think maybe
17:47Ferrari need to think about
17:48in these hot temperatures
17:49whether they need
17:50to make a few more changes
17:52for the softer tyres.
17:53Back to you.
17:54Karim,
17:54how are you fancying
17:55their chances tomorrow
17:56from where they are?
17:58I think if you look
17:59at where their race runs were
18:01and everything they did
18:02on the mediums,
18:02they were up there
18:03with McLarens.
18:04It's only on that last run
18:06that they dropped back.
18:07So, I think if they can understand
18:08where the performance went away,
18:10maybe they need to change
18:11what they do
18:12with the outlabs
18:13or their procedures,
18:14then the inherent car performance,
18:16I think, is there.
18:17It just didn't work
18:18on that tyre for them.
18:19Karim, in practice,
18:20they were three tenths
18:21up the road
18:22on that tyre.
18:24Yeah, but I think,
18:25generally,
18:25we've seen, though,
18:26Jan-Seon,
18:27in practice,
18:28Ferrari have showed
18:29their hand a bit more.
18:30That's been the trend,
18:31hasn't it?
18:32And if you look
18:33at the long runs,
18:34it was pretty close
18:35between Ferrari and McLaren.
18:36They're up there anyway.
18:37Let's take a stroll
18:38and we can go back
18:38into the stadium.
18:39Let's pick out
18:40another couple of things.
18:40I think I wrote it down
18:41what Carlos Sainz said
18:43because, actually,
18:44as Martin pointed out,
18:45it was a powerful statement.
18:46He comes in,
18:47he says,
18:48we are three steps behind
18:50where we should be
18:51at every point this weekend.
18:53I'm not happy about this.
18:54After an hour
18:55and a half's practice,
18:56still to be in this state,
18:58kind of like,
18:59it's not good enough,
18:59but it's also
19:00a pointed statement too.
19:02I was listening to
19:03James Vowles
19:03and the team principals
19:04press conference in between.
19:06You know,
19:06he's been going on about,
19:08we're breaking,
19:09we've been trying
19:10to stress test
19:11the system
19:12back at base,
19:13back at the factory.
19:14He tried to do that
19:15at a level
19:15that's just below
19:17a championship
19:19title winning team.
19:20obviously he's got experience
19:22from what they did
19:22at Mercedes
19:23and he was talking about
19:24just little things,
19:26problem with the software,
19:27back at base,
19:28a number of things
19:28adding up
19:29to being where they are
19:31at the moment.
19:32Whichever way
19:33it stacks up though,
19:34the job that's been done
19:35over the winter
19:36was not what
19:37we were expecting.
19:40No,
19:41but I mean,
19:41not everyone is going
19:42to get quicker
19:43over the winter.
19:44Not everyone's going
19:44to be fighting for wins.
19:45It's just the way
19:46this sport is
19:47and sometimes
19:47teams don't quite
19:48get it together
19:49but it's a little
19:50bit surprising.
19:51One,
19:52because the trajectory
19:53over the last few years
19:54with James in charge,
19:56it's been very positive
19:57and then having
19:58this setback,
19:59it's a big deal
20:01for a team
20:02that has so much
20:03positive energy
20:04around it.
20:04Yeah.
20:05And the fact
20:05that they also
20:06obviously were hyping up
20:07the fact that
20:07they were kind of
20:08sacrificing the last
20:09couple of years
20:09for this year
20:10and then they've come out
20:11and not delivered
20:12very much.
20:13You could tell
20:14that the drivers
20:15are getting a little
20:15bit more impatient,
20:17I suppose.
20:17I think they too
20:18are trying to stress
20:19the system as much
20:20as possible
20:20to make sure
20:21they're trying
20:22to get the most
20:22out of it
20:22but as you say,
20:23if there's more
20:24issues going on
20:25in the background
20:25and they've got
20:26to stress test
20:26the system,
20:27kind of like
20:27what I did
20:27with my husband
20:28to prepare him
20:28for this weekend,
20:29you've got to
20:29find out where
20:30your sore points are.
20:31To look after yourself.
20:33To look after the baby.
20:34Yeah, got to stress
20:34the system, you know,
20:35see where the problems
20:36are and then you know
20:37that you can make
20:37progress, right?
20:38This is what we've
20:39got to work on,
20:40et cetera and so
20:40I think they're building
20:41but yeah, again,
20:42that car's very
20:42overweight,
20:43they've lost a bit
20:44of weight it sounds like
20:44and yeah,
20:46apparently he's
20:46under investigation
20:47though, Alex Albon
20:48I believe
20:48for a trip limited
20:49That's a strange one,
20:50the Jews didn't call
20:51it straight away
20:52though, did you?
20:52Okay, anyway,
20:53we'll perhaps reflect
20:54on that a little bit
20:55later or tomorrow.
20:57Before we go,
20:57let's see from the LP
20:58drivers.
21:01Franco, it looks like
21:02you need to take
21:03a little trip
21:03to Buenos Aires
21:04before every race
21:05doesn't it?
21:06That was a great
21:07performance,
21:07you pleased?
21:08Yeah, I'm happy.
21:09I'm happy because
21:10we turned around
21:10something that,
21:11you know,
21:11was quite tough
21:13and it took us
21:14a while to understand
21:15and I think we are
21:16finally getting in
21:17the rhythm
21:18and understanding
21:19some of the pace
21:20that we lacked
21:20and yeah,
21:22doing good laps
21:23all day
21:24in a track that I know
21:25in a spring weekend
21:25that is more difficult
21:27and yeah,
21:28just all very popular
21:28positive to think.
21:30It's been a good break
21:31for us to kind of
21:33reset and go again
21:34and understand
21:35where we need to work
21:35and we worked,
21:36I think,
21:37really well
21:37in the right directions
21:38and yeah,
21:39I'm pleased with
21:39the performance today
21:40but of course
21:41just the start
21:41of the week
21:41and more to come to know.
21:42Did you get enough
21:43information in first practice
21:44to know what sort of
21:45race pace you can expect
21:46and whether you can
21:47hold those positions
21:48or even move forward?
21:49We'll try.
21:50I think pace is looking strong
21:53compared to the midfield cars
21:54we are good
21:55and even compared
21:56to the Red Bull of Isaac
21:57we are competitive
21:58we are on used tires
21:59at the end
21:59and we are weaker
22:01than him
22:02so it's looking strong
22:03I think that we can hear
22:04with all the low speed corners
22:05it's looking much more positive
22:06than Suzuka for me
22:08and I'm very happy for that.
22:12Hey Pierre,
22:13well you've made a bit of a habit
22:14of kind of getting into
22:15the top 10 in quali
22:16how do you feel about
22:17where you ended up today?
22:19Yeah, unfortunately
22:20not really good
22:20because it's been very difficult
22:22since this morning
22:23we've seen something
22:24it's not quite working
22:25on my side
22:26and I'm having a lot
22:27of wheel spin
22:27and unfortunately
22:29we didn't really have
22:30enough time
22:30to get to the bottom of it
22:31but yeah
22:33it hasn't felt good
22:35so we'll have to work out
22:36to improve it for tomorrow
22:38because I think
22:39I'm going to struggle a lot
22:39in the race
22:40as it stands
22:41but still managed
22:42to get the two cars
22:43in the top 10
22:44which is good
22:44but we just have
22:46a lot more potential
22:47to unlock.
22:48Yeah, I was going to say
22:49considering all the problems
22:50you've had
22:50the potential does seem
22:51much higher
22:52with the package
22:52Yeah, which is the reason
22:53why I'm a little disappointed
22:55because it just doesn't feel right
22:58since the first lap
22:59this morning
23:00and yeah
23:01it's just the spring weekend
23:02doesn't really give us
23:03much time to understand
23:04so we see
23:06but at the moment
23:06we don't fully understand it
23:07so we'll work out
23:09and we'll try to do better tomorrow.
23:13It's the first time
23:14in any qualifying session
23:16that Freca Colapinto
23:17has outqualified
23:18Pierre Gasly
23:19he certainly seems to be
23:21trending in the right direction
23:22Yeah, it kind of needs to, right?
23:25It's not been the easiest
23:26start to the year for him
23:27or end last year
23:28so Pierre has been on it
23:30he really has
23:31and to outqualify him here
23:32in the sprint qualifying
23:34I think is a great achievement
23:35it really is
23:36and it will give him confidence
23:37hopefully for the rest of the weekend
23:38Yeah, you can just see
23:39I mean the value of that
23:40Mercedes engine
23:41at the back of the car
23:42from front blast
23:44into this sort of position
23:46where they're regularly competing
23:47to get into Q3
23:48and pick up points is good
23:49Well, it was a decision
23:51that I think upset a lot of people
23:52when the decision was made
23:53to get rid of the Renault engine
23:55and a lot of politics behind it
23:56but at the end of the day
23:57it looks like the right call
23:58and it's been an environment
24:00with a lot of instability in the past
24:02but it feels like
24:02they are really now starting
24:04to find their feet
24:05and as you say
24:05you get into the top 10
24:07regular
24:08it's a good place to be in
24:09What are we expecting for tomorrow?
24:11I find these Saturdays
24:12and sprint weekends
24:13fascinating
24:13as you mentioned
24:15it looks like we could have
24:16quite an interesting sprint race itself
24:18probably all on the mediums
24:20because they've only got
24:20another set of hearts
24:21haven't they?
24:22And then of course
24:22our park ferme
24:23and you think it will be
24:24a different story
24:25if they can tweak the cars
24:26for qualifying for the race proper?
24:28Yeah of course
24:28I mean tomorrow
24:30all eyes will be on the race
24:31in the morning
24:32and it's exciting for us
24:33I think picking a winner
24:35is very difficult
24:36but for the guys out there
24:38yeah also
24:38they haven't raced
24:39wheel to wheel yet
24:40around here
24:40with the new systems
24:42you know
24:42with less deployment
24:43and it's going to be interesting
24:46to see how they deal
24:47with it all
24:47and they're really going to have
24:48to think on their feet
24:49tomorrow
24:49and I'm excited
24:50about seeing that
24:51It's not traditionally a track
24:52you get too much overtaking
24:53but we don't know
24:54because it's a new era
24:56of Formula 1
24:56It is a new era Formula 1
24:58and there are a couple
24:58of long straights
24:59so I think that we will see
25:00some overtaking tomorrow
25:01but it's always a great thing
25:02with a sprint weekend
25:03is you kind of get a taste
25:04of what you're going to get
25:05on Sunday
25:05so we're going to find out soon
25:07Thank you both
25:08appreciate it
25:09yeah that's where we are
25:10we're in the middle of the
