Chris Perkins joins the show for his reaction & claims he feels the roster has tuned McDaniel out.
Transcript
00:00I'm Chris Perkins on the Toyota of Hollywood Hotline.
00:03Perk, you've covered this team for a long, long time.
00:08I think there were several moments this season that were embarrassing enough to necessitate changes,
00:14but nothing happened, and last night, finally, Stephen Ross, I guess, reached a boiling point.
00:21So, what's your take on the mutual parting between Chris Greer and the Miami Dolphins?
00:30My first take is Greer was fired.
00:32My second take is, why is Mike McDaniel still there?
00:36I mean, what's going on here?
00:38I mean, maybe it's because Steve Ross really likes him.
00:42Maybe it's because there's not a better choice for interim coach on this staff.
00:46But, man, if they don't take a groom to the duo of Chris Greer and Mike McDaniel, something's wrong.
00:53It would be so Dolphins to do this piecemeal once again.
00:56And what's happening with the coach?
01:00What's happening with the preparation, Perk?
01:02Just ill-prepared to play, penalties, pre-snap penalties, unneeded timeouts, coming out at half.
01:08I saw the other day, I was watching the Chiefs game.
01:10They scored six out of eight times.
01:13Eight games, six times they scored on the first drive of the second half because they made adjustments.
01:18You can't put that on Chris Greer.
01:20This team doesn't look prepared for some of these games.
01:22No, you're right, Tanner.
01:24And look, this is a situation where I had a column written this morning.
01:30I was like two minutes from following it that said Mike McDaniel era is a failure.
01:37And then the Chris Greer thing came up.
01:39And so I had to scrap that column and write a new column on Chris Greer.
01:43But, you know, the Dolphins, they go through these stretches under Mike McDaniel of where they get figured out
01:50and they just get in this extended funk.
01:53Y'all realize this is the sixth three-game losing streak under Mike McDaniel.
01:59Sixth!
02:00Like Baltimore and Buffalo have, I think Baltimore has had a three-game losing streak
02:06and a four-game losing streak in the McDaniel era.
02:09Kansas City has not had a three-game losing streak.
02:12Buffalo has not had a three-game losing streak.
02:15The Dolphins have had six.
02:17And they had a five-game losing streak in 2022 also.
02:21They just get in these folks of penalties and turnovers and boneheaded mistakes.
02:26Blown coverage is like, how many of those touchdowns last night were wide open?
02:31They just have these extended periods that they can't get out of that they just do boneheaded things.
02:37And that's where we're at right now.
02:39It's another three-game losing streak.
02:40So we're going to disconnect Perk real quick here, and we're going to reconnect via the phone
02:45because we have a bad connection with him.
02:47So we'll just take him on the phone line because we were trying to do video as well,
02:50but it's a little too echoey and hollow there.
02:52So we'll disconnect him for one sec.
02:54We'll reconnect on the phone, and we will reconvene with Chris Perkins
02:58and continue our coverage here of Chris Greer being let go.
03:02He said there whether you could hear it or not at the beginning.
03:04He said Chris Greer was fired.
03:07He doesn't take it as to be a mutual decision, which I think everyone agrees.
03:12Unless if you're Chris Greer and you've had conversations with Stephen Ross, you know,
03:17leading into last night's game, just based on everything this season, like, hey, you know,
03:22we're going to have to make a change at some point.
03:24Like Chris Greer is not unaware.
03:25He knows what's going on.
03:28It is possible that after the game last night, Chris Greer calls him and says,
03:33hey, if you were ready to make that change, like, I understand it.
03:37So in that aspect, it would, you know what I mean, where it could be considered to be mutual,
03:43and I'm sure the payout has something to do with it, mutual, reconnected with Perk on the phone here.
03:47Sorry, Perk, but we had a bad connection there, and I wanted to make sure that we were able to hear
03:51everything that you had to say.
03:52When Mike McDaniel is still here, I said to Crowder earlier, like,
03:57it's going to be a strange vibe at that facility, right, where the GM has gone in the middle of the season,
04:05the head coach has to feel like dead man walking, the players don't know if they're going to be here next Tuesday,
04:12they don't know who's going to be making a decision on their future,
04:15they know the season's been an abject failure, like, that's a really weird situation for these players to be in, no?
04:23Oh, yeah, and players, assistant coaches, everybody, everybody's going to be wondering,
04:28what the heck do I have to do to stay here, or is it inevitable that I'm going to be canned,
04:34just like Chris Greer was?
04:35So I don't know how the vibe is going to be next week when we go out there,
04:39but I'm sure that everybody is just going to be looking at each other going,
04:43what the heck is going on around here?
04:45Like, who fires the GM without firing the coach mid-season?
04:49It's just another soul dolphin thing, and, you know, Dave Hyde, you know,
04:56got confirmed that McDaniel will be here at least through the end of the season.
05:01So it doesn't look like there's, it doesn't look like a coaching change is inevitable here.
05:07It looks like they're just going to see what happens the rest of the season and then go from there.
05:12But, man, I would just find it so hard to believe that Mike McDaniel would survive this change at this point.
05:19It seems to me like you just do a complete rebuild and proceed like that
05:24and not just do the piecemeal rebuild like it looks like right now they might be considering.
05:31And, Perk, what is Champ Kelly's, what's his responsibility over these next, you know, whatever it is, nine weeks?
05:39Can he make moves?
05:40Because if he's not going to be your GM, you shouldn't have him, you know, building the groceries again.
05:45Like, they put him in place.
05:47I know he's been here for a while.
05:48I found out today he's been here since March.
05:50But what's his responsibilities moving forward?
05:53I'm going to guess that he's got full GM capabilities or else, you know, why have him in there?
06:00So I would guess that, you know, and look, I don't think that he's going to be authorized to make wholesale changes
06:07and, you know, trade away Jalen Waddle and Devon H.
06:10But I think that he would be able to trade some players such as Bradley Chubb or Matthew Judon
06:19or maybe even Jalen Phillips, I would think that he's pretty much got full GM capability within reason.
06:27Of course, within reason, that's a strange phrase to apply to the Dolphins, right?
06:32If we applied reason, Mike McDaniel wouldn't be there.
06:36There's been nothing reasonable about this team the entire season.
06:39But, Perk, to that point, we're all kind of expecting McDaniel to do what any coach would do
06:46who feels like his job is perhaps under pressure or he's under pressure of losing the job,
06:51which would be play the best players available, right?
06:54But I think that's where it becomes difficult where you want to see what guys could potentially become good players in the future,
07:03but you have a head coach who's saying, no, no, no, I'm trying to win games.
07:07Would Mike McDaniel perhaps reconsider that approach just because he wants to potentially lean into a new regime
07:16and be here long-term?
07:19Like, I know it's easy for him to say, I'm playing the best players, but maybe he's going to say,
07:22hey, I'll help you, Stephen Ross, I'll help you, Champ Kelly, evaluate some of the newer, younger players,
07:30even if it means I'm losing more games as a head coach.
07:33You know what, Solana, it's interesting because I don't know how much lower you can go on the totem pole,
07:41and what I mean is they're already playing younger players.
07:44Like, they have changed philosophies coming into the season from the win now to the draft and develop thing.
07:50You know, they're going to win with youth and draftees, and so that's why you're seeing a lot of the younger players
07:56out there playing, well, that and injuries, but, I mean, you're already playing, you know,
08:01Kenneth Grant and Jonas Abaynaya and Jordan Phillips and Dante Trader and Jason Marshall Jr.
08:07and Taj Washington, Malik Washington.
08:10Like, there's not a whole lot of guys that you can go to on the bench, you know, draftees that you can say,
08:16let's see what this guy can do.
08:17We're seeing it already.
08:19So, you know, I would think that Mike McDaniel is going to do his best to win with the young players
08:28and the draftees because that was the plan last time we had checked with them.
08:33I don't see why they would deviate from that because you do still have to start over.
08:38Regardless of who is going to be the general manager, you do have to start over.
08:42So, I wouldn't expect that Mike McDaniel is going to go away from, you know, playing,
08:49and let's just say go away from playing Tua, although, you know, I think if you get to Tua 9,
08:54if you lose the last two, I would want to see if you have a bridge quarterback on the roster
08:59between Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers, but, you know, aside from that, I don't know how much lower
09:05that you can go.
09:06I wouldn't imagine they would bench Devon Achan to see what Jalen Wright can do.
09:10So, I think they're pretty much at that point where they're trying to see what they have
09:16with young players.
09:17I'm watching the game right now.
09:18It's up on NFL Network here in the studio.
09:21And I don't know if I've ever seen McDaniel look as exasperated all game long as he did
09:27on the sidelines last night.
09:29And Crowder had mentioned the Ollie Gordon fight.
09:33Who's the running back's coach?
09:34Eric Studeville.
09:35Yeah, Studeville.
09:36He got into it with him.
09:37Like, there's obviously some disarray there.
09:41I know you said, and we saw the reports, you said Dave Hyde at the Sun-Sentinel confirmed
09:45that McDaniel will be the head coach the rest of the season.
09:48Do you think there is a scenario, though, where he's not?
09:53Oh, I think there could be because if you, I mean, let's just say you get blown out in
09:58the next two games and you're a really ugly two and nine at the bye.
10:03Mike, I think that we're already at the point where players have stopped listening to Mike
10:08McDaniel.
10:09You know, again, I think they'll always like Mike.
10:12I think they'll always respect Mike.
10:14But I think they tuned him out.
10:15You just see all these errors, repeated errors.
10:19And I'm talking to players in the locker room last night, guys that I trust, Alec Engold
10:25and Aaron Brewer and Patrick Paul, and they're all talking about a lack of focus, that we
10:30need to focus and practice.
10:33It just sounds like they've tuned Mike McDaniel out.
10:36You see all these coverage busts and the turnovers and all of this kind of stuff, the penalties.
10:42So it's going to be very, very interesting to see what happens around there, because I
10:48don't think that the players are really paying attention to Mike that much anymore.
10:54And, Perk, I never thought I had asked this question at this level of football, but I need
10:58a yes or no.
10:59I really do.
11:00Can Tua stand on the 50-yard line, throw the ball into the end zone?
11:07I don't know.
11:08He took that dive last night.
11:10I don't know.
11:12I would think that he could, but, you know, really, to me, with Tua, it's what can you
11:18do without Tyreek Hill and Darren Waller in this Mike McDaniel offense?
11:23And, Mike McDaniel, what is your offense about without Tyreek Hill?
11:27Because we're not seeing much.
11:29We didn't see much in training camp either.
11:31You remember Tyreek didn't do hardly anything in training camp, and it wasn't necessarily
11:37the dink and dunk offense they went to last year.
11:39But the threat of the big play was on.
11:42Tua doesn't have a big arm.
11:44We all know that.
11:45But can he move this offense?
11:47Can this offense be creative without Tyreek?
11:50So far, to me, the answer is a resounding no.
11:54And, yeah, Crowder, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
11:57Now, I'm going to say he can do that.
11:59I don't know if it'll go 51 yards or 52, but I'm going to say it's going to go 50.
12:04Chris Perkins, read his work in the Sun-Sentinel, download the Sun-Sentinel app, and obviously
12:10there will be continuing Dolphins coverage.
12:13And, oh, it's just Buffalo next on the schedule.
12:18That's all.
12:182-1-8 is inevitable, right?
12:21We will write that down.
12:22It's just Buffalo.
12:23Like I said, going into last night's game, like, for Baltimore, this is a get-right game.
12:29And it was.
12:30Buffalo ain't a get-right game for the Dolphins.
12:33So it's just Buffalo.
12:34We'll do what we do.
12:36We'll read your coverage all weekend long, Perk.
12:38Thanks for making time for us.
12:40All right.
12:40I'm going to pay my cell phone bill here and get some better apparel up here.
12:45See you, Perk.
12:46There you go.
12:47Chris Perkins from the Sun-Sentinel.
12:49Cheetah Pompano.
12:50What a great spot to hang out this weekend, watch a little football.
12:54They got HDTVs throughout the club, VIP areas, four stages of entertainment, and the most beautiful
13:00ladies in South Florida.
13:02And, of course, it's Halloween night tonight.
13:04And Halloween night at Cheetah Pompano or Cheetah Palm Beach, probably pretty fun.
13:10And if you're looking for, hey, you want to wipe out the memories of last night's football
13:14game, go to Cheetah Palm Beach or Cheetah Pompano Beach tonight and let them take it.
13:20It's almost like the Men in Black Neuralizer.
13:23You walk into Cheetah, man, you won't remember anything you don't want to remember anymore.
