Once dark, cramped, and full of odd angles, this Parisian pied-à-terre has been transformed into an elegant, contemporary city retreat where every element is custom-made to fit perfectly. By removing unnecessary walls, Thomas Christiaen of Atelier Philibert created a spacious layout that maximises light flow, incorporating glass partitions and mirrors for a bright, open feel. A striking dark oak kitchen with a mirrored backsplash integrates seamlessly with a built-in dining area, featuring green cord velvet storage benches. A hidden doorway in the living room leads to a cosy bedroom and a luxurious, spa-like bathroom with a built-in laundry. Thoughtful details and high-quality finishes make this compact apartment an inviting blend of style, functionality and Parisian charm.

00:04For their pied-à-terre, the owners wanted to be at the heart of Paris and fill its history.
00:12This apartment is owned by Céline and Henri, a yoga teacher and a pilot.
00:18They moved away from Paris three years ago to settle in a big house in the southwest of France.
00:26What is always challenging in this kind of building is that you don't have any straight angles.
00:33Everything was made to measure or built from scratch.
00:50The apartment is located in the fifth arrondissement between the Panthéon and the Jardin du Luxembourg.
00:58The owners chose the flat mainly for its location.
01:01It's a pretty touristic area, but the Malbranche street is very quiet.
01:08The main idea was to make the most of the space by highlighting the high ceilings.
01:14They wanted to give it an elegant Parisian feel with rich materials and serine colors.
01:20I used a lot of mirrors to reflect the light,
01:24as well as glass partitions between the rooms to let the light pass through.
01:30There was a small hallway by the entrance.
01:33The flat had two bedrooms and surprisingly no living room.
01:37During the renovation, we got rid of all the partition walls,
01:41except for the main wall dividing the apartment in two.
01:44And we created a glass wall between the kitchen and bedroom to help brighten it up.
01:50Finally, we removed the wall of the bathroom to gain extra space for the new laundry.
02:00The entrance is an open space between the living room and the kitchen.
02:05Behind the bench, between the entrance and dining area,
02:08there is a surface for kids when you walk into the apartment and some storage.
02:13I added a wardrobe with two large mirror doors for coats and shoes.
02:18It also reflects the light coming from the windows.
02:23We used big beige tiles in the kitchen to signify the start of a new area.
02:29The client wanted a darker color to contrast with the light walls.
02:33It makes the kitchen feel elegant.
02:38On the side of the dining area, we created a wooden glass partition between the kitchen and the bedroom.
02:46It has helped to make this dark kitchen feel a lot brighter, especially during the day.
02:54The custom bench fits two people and can be opened like a chest to store cushions or bottles.
03:02The kitchen is along the back wall. It has everything you need.
03:05We have a built-in, a kitchen sink, an induction hob, a dishwasher, an oven, and a comfortable sink.
03:10We have lots of storage above and below with some open storage for plates and bowls.
03:16We chose mirror for the splash back to give the sense of a large space,
03:20but also used it to help hide the beams that we couldn't move.
03:24All the kitchen cabinets have been designed and made to measure,
03:28as the dimensions of the kitchen didn't fit with standard cabinets.
03:33The Smeg fridge was from the owner's previous home, so we had to design the area to fit this fridge.
03:40There was some leftover space, so we added one storage to fill in the gap.
03:47In front of the dining area, we added additional storage and shelves for the dishes and cutlery.
03:54We used the same quartz countertop as the kitchen.
03:58We wanted the space to be usable for any kitchen appliances.
04:05The toilet was originally next to the kitchen, but after the changes, we felt the entrance to the toilet should
04:11be rotated to create a more discreet space.
04:15We chose white ceramic freestanding toilets and white walls and floors.
04:20The wall lamp and its pink cliché glass creates a warm light in this small space.
04:26The living space has two big windows that bring in a lot of natural light.
04:32The sofa is placed in a corner by the bathroom wall and can be converted into a bed for guests.
04:39A glass partition between the two spaces creates a decorative feature.
04:45The floors were the original wooden oak floors, which we refurbished.
04:51The blinds are white linen, so does not completely black out the room, but still provides some privacy.
04:57We added a series of bookshelves using the dead space under the window.
05:02The heaters also play an aesthetic role.
05:05They are electric, but have a retro design and their height makes them stand like statues in the apartment.
05:13We access the bedroom through a hidden door in the living room.
05:18As we walk in, we are immediately filled with a light from the window, which is reflected in the giant
05:24mirrors from the wardrobe doors.
05:28There is a queen-sized bed on the other side of the room.
05:32We straightened the wall behind it, which created a bed head and a surface for items.
05:40Unlike the living room, we chose black art curtains for the bedroom, so you can really get a good night's
05:45rest.
05:47The ceiling and the top of the walls are painted in a warm Indian yellow.
05:52I always like to paint the upper part of the wall in the same color, to help produce a sense
05:58of height in the bedroom, which makes it feel more cozy.
06:08I think my favorite part in this apartment is the bathroom, because it was really the most cramped space and
06:15my clients were completely lost when they saw it.
06:18They didn't know what to do with it.
06:20The result is quite astonishing and it's probably the best place for them to be in this flat.
06:27The wash basin is made to measure in Corian with a cloud finish.
06:32We used beige matte tiles for the shower, which gives it a Hammam feeling.
06:37The long shape also allowed us to create a bench to relax while showering.
06:43We decided not to have any door and to keep it open.
06:49We added a built-in cupboard for the new laundry.
06:52It contains a washing machine, a dryer and a water heater.
07:00Small spaces are often the most challenging projects.
07:04They require smart ideas to combine aesthetics and functionality into a compact area.
07:09I like to start from these limitations and push the solutions as far as possible to create dramatic spaces.
07:28I like to start thinking that they cannot pour into work.
07:30It's a perfect idea, so that it can be done during both ways.
07:30The frames a bit of never loathing will be sufficient.
07:34I like to learn more about how they cut off the safe space.
