Interior architect Mikołaj Ziemiński of EMTE studio has crafted a bold neo-retro apartment, seamlessly blending striking retro elements with contemporary design. Central to the studio is a built-in shelving unit that separates the bedroom from the living room. Defined by evenly spaced square shelves and finished in textured plywood that matches the kitchen, the unit provides a modest backdrop to more eccentric furnishings, including a curved red plastic pendant light and a pink velvet sofa. Beyond aesthetics, the space is highly practical, with thoughtful touches like a ribbed cast-iron radiator for functionality and retro appeal, and blue Luxfer glass bricks in the shower that allow natural light to filter in from the bedroom.

00:01The owner, Gosia, is a good friend of mine.
00:05She had very clear visions of what she wanted the apartment to be.
00:10She wanted a bold and striking visual composition.
00:15The space was inspired by the vintage trend to create a space with a neo-retro vibe.
00:23My name is Mikołaj Ziemiński.
00:25I'm an interior architect and co-founder of MT Studio in Poland.
00:36The apartment building is new and was built in 2022.
00:42In Poland it is common to buy apartments with only ready-made walls with pre-installed water and electrical outlets.
00:51Just the basics.
00:52The advantage of resuming an apartment in this condition is that walls can be demolished if necessary.
00:58It also means we don't waste any materials.
01:05We wanted the apartment to show Gosia's personality since she is such a bright and fun person.
01:13Her revision included creating a space conducive to showcasing plants and displaying decorations.
01:22To interplay with colors, textures and light.
01:30The walls separating the living space and the bedroom would be removed.
01:35In its place, we opted to install a built-in furniture unit.
01:40Also providing ample storage space.
01:43The bathroom remained in the same place.
01:46We managed to move the washing machine out.
01:49This also created the entrance to the bathroom.
01:53The apartment is located in Garrison district in the Brzeszcz neighborhood of Gdańsk.
02:01Since the end of the 19th century, the area served as a military base for over 100 years.
02:08Garrison is becoming known as an area for people who enjoy art, good food, green spaces while having everything they
02:16need close by.
02:20To the right of the front door is a full height mirror.
02:24It enhances the sense of space and makes the small entrance feel less cramped.
02:31We installed built-in storage units near the entrance to create a spacious walk-in closet, ideal for outwear, shoes
02:40and bags.
02:41In the center of the room is the dining space.
02:45It features a round table that makes it easy to move around flat.
02:49It is paired with a set of iconic 1960s chairs.
02:54The sleek design of the chairs which were restored by Gosia.
02:58And ties in well with the modern table.
03:03Complementing this setup is a red curved lamp made from recycled plastic.
03:07Its warm hue is further accented by the red, creating more atmospheric feel in this house, especially in the evenings.
03:17The kitchen unit starts from the entrance.
03:21The plywood fronts are melamine panels with a 3D structure that creates a reflective effect.
03:28To add a certain lightness of color in the space, the upper cabinets are finished in white, which relates to
03:36the living room wall and does not focus the eye.
03:40The kitchen worktop is made of HPL compact, which is more affordable than Terrazzo, yet offers a similar appearance and
03:49benefits.
03:51The mirrored kickboard trim along the bottom is meant to give a slight lift to the cabinets so they appear
03:58lighter.
03:59The design of the living space was intended to seamlessly continue the style of the kitchen.
04:07The cabinet includes lower drawers with plywood fronts, upper shelves finished in white and a small drop has been created
04:17at the back for plants.
04:19In the corner of the room there is a stunning ripped cast iron radiator that adds both an aesthetic charm
04:27and functional warmth.
04:28This is also a reference to the 1980s and 1990s when they were a common fixture in every flat.
04:36To me it almost looks like a piece of art.
04:40It's a similar color to the tiles in the kitchen, creating sense of visual continuity throughout the space.
04:48We added light grey curtains along the entire length of the flat.
04:53They provide privacy and add a sense of coziness.
04:58In the center of the apartment there is a striking L-shaped sofa finished in pink velvet.
05:06The bookcase behind the sofa helps to separate the living area from the private area.
05:12It features evenly divided shelves to allow the objects on them to be the focal points.
05:20Above the sofa is a lamp.
05:22It is a flexible LED lighting system, creates a unique atmosphere, especially during game nights with a friend.
05:31The floor throughout the apartment is coated with polyurethane resin.
05:36It is heat resistant, ensuring that the flat does not overheat despite its south facing windows.
05:43A remote control screen for the projector is mounted on the ceiling above.
05:49Thanks to this we are able to have a huge screen in a small apartment without sacrificing wall or counter
05:56space.
06:01From the living area there is a small balcony that overlooks the greenery which Gosia also wanted to have.
06:13On the other side of the bookcase is the bedroom which despite having no walls still provides a sense of
06:21privacy.
06:22Gosia adores the blue color and wanted the private areas in the apartment to be adorned in this hue.
06:31A custom bed platform was created in the same plywood as the shelf, great for storing seasonal items and suitcases.
06:41We added two additional shelves and the headboard for bedside storage.
06:48Behind the curtain there is a hidden storage system from IKEA for all of the clothes and personal items.
06:55We chose curtains instead of traditional doors due to limited space and because we like to use this material to
07:03soften up the bedroom.
07:05Above the bed there are two stick lamps for bedtime reading and for the closets.
07:11They can be adjusted when needed.
07:14Due to its flexibility we also used the same lamp above the desk.
07:20Behind it stands a floor length mirror that visually enlarges the space especially by reflecting the activity in the living
07:28room.
07:31The bathroom is my favorite room in the apartment.
07:35In order to make the space lighter we chose to have a modern tankless toilet that floats above the floor.
07:43I wanted to create a space that feels spacious, harmonious and tranquil.
07:49It was important for the design to be modern and elegant while also being functional and keeping everything tidy.
08:00We added beautiful Luxverse glass bricks to a section of the shower wall to allow natural light to enter from
08:08the bedroom.
08:09We chose ones with a blue tint in order to match them with the rest of the space.
08:15It also gives it a retro 80's vibe.
08:21During the renovation we were able to move the washing machine into one of the blue storage units which also
08:28allowed us to have more space for the bathroom.
08:35I pay a lot of attention to how people move throughout the space.
08:41Ensuring comfort and practicality is crucial to me.
08:45Small spaces often presents challenges that require out of the box solutions which may not be applicable to every situation.
08:54I think it is important to recognize the potential of this space and address any problem in an ambitious yet
09:03realistic manner.
