Located at the top of a Haussmannian building on the prestigious Avenue de New York in Paris, this 13sqm/139sqft chambre de bonne has been transformed into a fully functional, light-filled studio by designers Pauline Paradis and Sarah Chayeb of Chayeb & Paradis. Drawing inspiration from Japanese small spaces and compact boat interiors, the layout was completely reimagined to include a cozy 3sqm mezzanine bedroom, freeing up space below for a living area with a combined study and dining space, a fully equipped kitchen, and a compact bathroom. A daybed clad in ALPI wood serves as a sofa, guest bed, and storage unit, while mirrored cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom cleverly reflect light, enhancing the sense of space and brightness in this thoughtfully designed yet very compact home.

00:01We really love small spaces, especially this tiny one.
00:05The apartment is 13 square meters.
00:09It's always a challenge to optimize every square meter in a flat
00:14but also to bring the impression of space and comfort.
00:20Although the space is very tiny, each function has its own place
00:24so two people can interact in the space without disturbing one another.
00:30My name is Pauline Paradis and I am Sarah Chayeb.
00:33Together we designed this apartment.
00:43This apartment is located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.
00:48It is on Avenue de New York, right by the Seine.
00:51It is a typical and touristic area of Paris.
00:55It is on the top floor of an Osmanian building,
00:58built during the 19th century.
01:04We were inspired by compact and functional interiors of boats
01:08and also Japanese small interiors.
01:12Our client already has a bigger apartment in the building.
01:15He wanted a space to welcome his friends and family living abroad.
01:20The idea was to gather all the functions of a bigger apartment into a tiny space.
01:28Everything you need to live in the city.
01:35The flat was not renovated for years, it was an all-made room with its own staircase,
01:41historically been used by domestic helpers.
01:45The studio had a tiny kitchen, a shower and just enough room for a double bed.
01:50It didn't even have space for toilets.
01:53Everything was removed, so we could start from scratch.
01:57This allowed us to add a real bathroom with a toilet,
02:00a fully featured kitchen, a living and study area and even space for a washing machine.
02:07As this apartment was on the top floor of the building,
02:10we were able to find some extra space above to create a mezzanine bedroom.
02:21We entered directly into the very bright main living space of the studio.
02:27As it is such a small space, the desk also acts as a console for keys.
02:33Everything in the living space is very compact and functional.
02:36We used themed sheets of wood of the Italian company Alpi Wood.
02:42We think it gives a warm atmosphere to the daybed area,
02:47while on the other side there is more like cool material with stainless steel mirror.
02:56The daybed in the living room mainly functions as a sofa
03:00and can be used as a guest bed where friends stay over.
03:06We added drawers underneath for spare bedding.
03:10We changed the existing floor, which was very damaged, to a white-coated parquet floor.
03:17The big window above the desk brings a lot of natural light and has views of Parisian rooftops.
03:25We added two bars along the window for security.
03:29The desk is quite spacious with enough space for a laptop and other materials when working from home.
03:36It extends all the way to the sofa to become a side table for drinks and books.
03:44The side tables are really easy to push away.
03:46That's why there are several small ones and not one big.
03:51And the AC and the heater are hidden under the desk.
04:00The kitchen is really functional. It includes a small dishwasher, a large sink, bins and a cooktop.
04:09The kitchen cup boards are all hidden behind mirrors.
04:14As the neighbourhood is not close to many shops or restaurants,
04:18the idea was to be able to cook and eat while living in the studio.
04:24By the entrance, there is a cabinet that belongs to the kitchen with the hidden fridge and microwave.
04:31With the same idea of reinforcing the sheets of wood, we use brushed stainless steel and mirrors for the functional
04:39areas such as the kitchen.
04:42The mirror helps to create an illusion of a bigger space and reflects the surrounding light.
04:48A chrome steel wall lamp from Delta Light is placed on the mirror.
04:53The wall lamp is in chrome so you can't see it so much from the mirror.
04:58And it also shines down for the countertop and up for the general lighting.
05:04Basically, there is this wall of mirror that hides some spare space that we use for storages.
05:11Everything that we wanted to hide is behind the mirror.
05:15On the top floor of Osmanian buildings, it is common to have a shared toilet.
05:20We created a toilet and shower room that feels a lot bigger than the previous shower.
05:26The only colour we added in the project is in the bathroom.
05:30As there is no natural light in the space, we choose to have a real beautiful blue by using mosaic
05:37crystal glass tiles.
05:41Also, we use glass for the shower doors to be able to use the natural light of the space.
05:49We chose to separate the wash-bassin to split the bathroom area so two people could use it at the
05:56same time.
05:57Again, we played with mirrors to enlarge the space and make it brighter.
06:03Between the sofa and the wash-bassin, there is a hidden wardrobe behind some mirror doors.
06:08The wardrobe includes clothing space as well as a built-in washing machine.
06:19A custom white metal ladder leads to the mezzanine bedroom.
06:24We designed the curved railing around the ladder to feel safe while using it.
06:30We also have to provide a bit of extra privacy.
06:34We left the mezzanine very open in the living room with this small barrier that just prevents from falling down
06:41from the bed.
06:42But you cannot really stand up on the bed, so it's just a security enough barrier, but it keeps the
06:50room very open and bright.
06:52The mezzanine is extremely minimalistic, with the bed taking up most of the space.
06:58Using the space between some beams, we created a niche on both hands for phones, lights and bedside items.
07:08Indeed, we added skylights to bright the zenithal light into the studio.
07:14But also, you can open it so it feels less enclosed and you have a nice view of the sky.
07:26My favorite spot in this apartment is the daybed with the ladder.
07:30I really like the sheet of wood we used and the atmosphere in these flats.
07:36So, this part is my favorite because you can read, hang out or work.
07:42In Paris, these tiny spaces are usually used by single persons.
07:47It combines functionality with mobility as we also enjoy living outside in the city.
07:54It has a lot to offer, joining friends at restaurants or hanging out in museums and parks.
08:20It has a lot to offer, joining friends at restaurants or in airports.
08:20And I would like to introduce an airport.
