Custom carpentry lies at the heart of this compact Parisian apartment, crafted by architect-carpenter duo Nikhil Calas and Federico Diodato of studio faire. The design centers around three large, built-in furniture pieces that seamlessly integrate into the space. The first is a multifunctional floor-to-ceiling cube with bifold doors that houses a U-shaped kitchen, complete with a passe plats (plate pass) opening onto the dining area. In the living room, a custom bookcase doubles as a media unit and drinks cabinet, while in the bedroom, a large storage unit wraps around and above the queen-sized bed, integrating bedside tables and a work-from-home nook. Glass partitions in the kitchen and bedroom enhance the apartment’s sense of openness, while flexible furniture solutions in the living room, including a versatile double-sided sofa and swing-arm lamps, optimize functionality and adaptability.

00:06This project is all about carpentry. Our aim was to give life to the project by
00:14creating these three large pieces of furniture throughout the whole flat. My
00:22partner Federico and I were inspired by the floor plans of Hausmannian's
00:27apartments with connecting rooms next to the facades. Around Paris, small spaces
00:34are everywhere. Their constraints are great for project designing. We were also
00:40inspired by architects Alvarado and especially his offices in Helsinki.
00:57The flat is located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris in a small street called Villa de Ségur.
01:04The historic neighborhood of the 7th arrondissement is located on the Rive Gauche of Paris and it mixes
01:11large avenues and buildings with tiny streets with houses and also hotels particuliers.
01:18The building was recently completed in 2021. The owners purchased the flat during its construction
01:25phase. As they loved to have friends over, their brief was to have a generous kitchen,
01:31a large dining table and a comfortable living room. We decided to use a partition made of glass
01:37and steel between the living and bedroom area. The first thing we did was to add a u-shaped kitchen
01:44inside a floor-to-ceiling storage unit. The kitchen is open towards the dining area and the outside.
01:51A custom integrated bookcase was added to the living room. It provides storage for books and other
01:57household items. Finally, in the bedroom we added a large custom piece of bespoke furniture that combines
02:04storage, a desk and bedside tables. It wraps around the bed and makes the most of the small space.
02:17The flat opens into a small entrance. It's small but it provides some privacy from the rest of the apartment.
02:25We added hooks for coats, hats and jackets and a small stool to sit when putting or removing shoes.
02:32At the end of the entrance area there is a separate toilet and sink, which makes it perfect for guests.
02:39We chose to keep the entrance free from furniture so it doesn't end up feeling cramped.
02:45Instead there is storage space for shoes, even more coats and bags as part as the storage unit in the
02:51living room.
02:54When entering the living space, all three French windows are immediately visible,
02:59which gives the space a sense of openness and light.
03:02The custom bookshelf serves multiple purposes. It's a bookshelf, a media unit and storage for household items.
03:11During the construction there was an awkward corner in the living room that we had to work around,
03:16so we tried to make the most of it and created some hidden storage for the apartment.
03:21We really wanted to play with dark and light colors and I think the wood material was perfect for that.
03:28We added custom turned wooden posts that could be used as handles for the sliding doors, structural beams and also
03:36shelf dividers.
03:39In the center of the living area there is a double-sided sofa by the French brand Sina.
03:44The idea of the sofa is to allow and adapt to different uses of the living spaces.
03:51The cushions for example can be reconfigured in many ways and when you remove all the cushions,
03:56the sofa turns into a guest bed.
04:00When having a party, the coffee tables can be stacked away, the sofa can be moved out of the way
04:05and the ceiling lamp can be rearranged. It's all very flexible.
04:15The kitchen is hidden behind a bespoke bifold door in the middle of a large floor-to-ceiling storage unit
04:22and when the door is closed you can make the kitchen completely disappear.
04:27The upper storage is great for storing less commonly used items such as cushions or maybe party items.
04:36The storage in the kitchen was maximized in order to have a free wall above the sink.
04:43We added a charlotte Paris-Enscente to create a sense of impact.
04:48The lamp was designed in the 1930s and as it pivots it can provide both direct and indirect light.
04:57We actually hid the fridge in this threshold in between the living room and the kitchen
05:02and when the bifold door is open it reveals the integrated fridge.
05:08All the appliances in the kitchen such as the dishwasher, the oven, the hob, the fridge,
05:15are integrated and hidden away from view.
05:20The entire kitchen is made to measure to fit the needs of our clients as close as possible.
05:26Every centimeter was maximized.
05:29All across the flat we designed handles that are carved out of the plywood face.
05:36The countertop is a river-wide granite. The texture of this specific granite works really well with the texture of
05:43the wood.
05:44The bench top hood sits right behind the cooktop
05:48to save space on the wall and maximize storage in this small nook.
05:58For the dining area we designed
06:01a very simple custom bench that's used as seating for the dining table.
06:06The connection between the kitchen and the dining area is the balance between open and closed,
06:12and it was inspired by Alvaralto's office in Helsinki.
06:17The use of fluted glass allows the kitchen to be filled with light.
06:21The gap above the counter space lets you pass items through the dining table.
06:26In French we call that a passe-plats, which is passing plates.
06:36From the dining and living areas there are French drawers that lead to the balcony.
06:42We wanted to be able to walk along the façade, both inside and outside,
06:47and to consider it as an extra room in the summertime.
06:51It's perfect to sip a coffee in the morning and have a dinner party on late summer nights.
06:59The bedroom is connected to the living area through a large steel and glass partition,
07:04that we call a verrier in French.
07:10This glass wall allows you to perceive the whole length of the flat at a glance.
07:15We add a large custom furniture piece that wraps around the queen-size bed.
07:21It combines storage, a desk and bedside table, and it makes the most of the small space.
07:29Wrapping around and above the bed is more storage for anything and everything,
07:34and it also helps to create a cozy space when sleeping.
07:39The bedside tables are hidden away in a nook between the storage.
07:44There are hidden switches for all the lights in the bedroom, including the bedside lights by
07:50Jameson from IMPM, allowing for a hotel experience at home.
07:56The desk is small but mighty. It's also great to use. It's curved to make it easier to move around
08:02the bed.
08:04As the owners only use a laptop when working from home, the tiny size is perfect for them.
08:11We also created a nook for a lamp and printer.
08:15Included in the flat was a built-in wardrobe. We got the developer to get the doors that would
08:21best match the rest of the wooden features of the flat.
08:26In order to reduce visual clutter and emphasize the view out to the windows,
08:32we decided not to add curtains and rely only on the roller shutters outside.
08:41The ensuite bathroom was kept in its original state. It's simple, efficient and easy to maintain.
08:49There's a spacious walk-in shower, which adds to the hotel feeling of the flat.
08:59The opportunities of the city dwellings lie in their constraints.
09:04That's what we love about them, to tailor each and everyone, to be bold about ideas about what
09:12is a home and what is a room, and also to give a sense of warmth and well-being.
09:17Basically, a feeling of home.
