Originally a dark share house with no common spaces, this 18th-century Parisian apartment was completely transformed by architect Taïna Pichon of Meraki Architecture to maximise both space and light. Knocking down all the internal walls and completely rearranging the floorplan, Pichon created a new bathroom, kitchen, and comfortable living room. The strategic use of glass panels between the dining room and bedroom allows the entire apartment to be flooded with natural light from the living room’s large windows. The client’s cherished record collection holds focus in the living room, as well as a muted orange terracotta-coloured feature wall in the bedroom, adding depth to the apartment. Pichon’s commitment to simplicity and to using only a few natural materials has created a neutral, flexible space with vintage touches that add personality throughout.

00:04As we all small spaces, the challenge was to make it seem bigger.
00:14I wanted to create continuity and fluidity between the spaces,
00:19to create a simple natural design with warm and durable materials.
00:29I think it's important to have fun when decorating your home.
00:33I love natural, graphic materials and adding a small touch of eccentricity.
00:48The apartment is located in Jourdain, next to Belleville area,
00:53in the 20th arrondissement of Paris.
00:56This area is a bit like a village, with a beautiful church,
01:00a lively neighbourhood life, and not far from Les Butromont, a famous park in Paris.
01:07The building was constructed at the end of the 18th century.
01:11It was built as a residential block.
01:15It's very beautiful with its stone facade and old mouldings.
01:22My client had some specific ideas about the layout he wanted.
01:27The light was an important consideration in this project, as the apartment was quite dark.
01:33The glass wall between the dining room and the bedroom is currently trendy and often asked by my clients.
01:42But for this project, I wanted to design it in a way that it looks like it has always been
01:48a part of the apartment.
01:54When we first found the apartment, it was poorly maintained and lacked soul.
02:00The apartment was previously used as a share house, so there were no common spaces.
02:07There were two bedrooms, a common toilet and a small kitchen.
02:13We totally changed the floor plan and removed all of the inside walls.
02:19We created a new kitchen by the entrance of the apartment.
02:23A bedroom with a large ensuite bathroom and separate toilet.
02:27And a cozy living room with a central dining room.
02:48The apartment opens up directly to the kitchen, so a part of the kitchen is also the entrance.
02:55Coats and outerwear can be hung on the hooks behind the front door.
03:01The kitchen is along the wall.
03:03It is quite large for this size apartment and equipped with everything you need.
03:11The kitchen counter is made from oak and I put some textured white tiles for the backsplash.
03:19There is a big fridge, a dishwasher, an oven and an induction hub.
03:29I chose to use white facades to make this narrow space more spacious.
03:35The floor is covered with terracotta and red colored patterned cement tiles.
03:43The dining room marks the articulation between the kitchen and the living room.
03:51The old wooden floor has been restored and runs into the bedroom, toilets and living room.
03:58The glass from the wall dividing bedroom and dining rooms allows natural light to spill into the dining area.
04:07We chose a large vintage table from the 50s and four vintage chairs from the 70s for the dining room.
04:16Above the dining table there are two blue ceramic pendant lights.
04:23The living room faces the main window with the balcony.
04:30I custom designed some shelves and closets at each end of the window.
04:39We chose not to install too much furniture to make it simple.
04:45The client loves listening to music and he has a great record collection.
04:50So we made this the central part of the living room.
04:56When he wants to watch a movie, he can pull down a projector screen from the ceiling.
05:02We added a lamp next to the vinyl cabinet.
05:07And we put lights on the walls.
05:10It creates a nice atmosphere in the evenings.
05:22The bedroom can be seen from the living room.
05:26From the outset my client wanted a terracotta wall.
05:30It is a color that has some meaning to him.
05:33It gives depth and the terracotta color can be seen from everywhere in the space.
05:40Along one wall there is a floor to ceiling wardrobe that spans the entire bedroom.
05:47It has a lot of space for clothes and household items.
05:53Below the window between the dining room there is a cupboard for more storage.
05:59When the client wants to work from home, there is a pull-out desk here too.
06:10There are two wall-mounted lights on either side of the window.
06:15It makes a comfortable space to work in the evening but also helps to illuminate the dining space on the
06:23other side.
06:26I custom designed the bedside tables.
06:29They are small and have a tiny footprint, perfect for the space.
06:34There are two lamps on either side of the bed for bedtime reading.
06:42The bathroom is quite large and bright with two windows.
06:47It's all white in order to bring out the same entire floor which are the same as the ones in
06:53the kitchen.
06:53The washing machine is inside of a floor to ceiling storage closet.
07:00The sink and vanity are in the brightest corner of the bathroom.
07:05There is a large mirror which helps reflect the light from the windows and floating shelves made from the same
07:11oak as the kitchen.
07:14The vertical lights on each side of the mirror are the same as the ones in the bedroom.
07:22As an architect, I like simplicity and fluidity.
07:26I often use few different materials so the space can feel larger and not overloaded.
07:35Parisian apartments are often tiny but they are a refuge in this big city.
07:41I think it is essential to renovate existing buildings in order to adapt them to our current lifestyle.
07:49In Paris, we are fortunate to have high quality existing buildings full of potential that we should repurpose and make
07:57use of them.
08:11As...
08:14Now take care pour pay attention to the district.
